Miami Gardens

A message from Mayor Shirley Gibson...

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE 2011 HURRICANE SEASON? A FATHER’S DAY MESSAGE Hurricane Season begins on June 1st and ends on November 30th. While last year South Florida escaped the wrath of the season’s storms, other cities and states were tremendously affected. The 2010 Hurricane season proved to be quite active with 19 named storms. Five of these

storms reached category 3 or higher. The 2010 season was by far the most active on record. The 2011 Hurricane Season is predicted to be at least as active as the 2010 season. Are you prepared? We know the devastation hurricanes can cause; flooding, injuries, death, interruptions in various utility services, including down power lines and interruption of communication services as well as little or no access to food and water. We must approach this Hurricane Season with an eye towards preparedness.

How do children come to realize the connection between their school experiences and the world of work? How can area businesses ensure entry-level employees have the skills they need? For most students the connection between school and work is very unclear. Not for students at Miami Gardens’ elementary schools who are served by The City of Miami

Gardens, and area business volunteers through a yearlong School-to-Career program called KIDS AND THE POWER OF WORK (KAPOW). This year, Miami Gardens’ elementary schools included Barbara Hawkins, Norland and Golden Glades Elementary schools.

Councilman As Father’s Day approaches, I am reminded of my father; he was a great man and a wonderful father. Although I knew his value in my life when he was alive, I understand it better now that he is gone. I was blessed to have a great dad. Fathers do a lot that we don’t always notice at the time; they are calm when the situation seems to require panic; strong when fear is at heart; they are a better friend to us than we are to them; they say no when yes would be easier, but nonetheless wrong; they teach, lead and pray for us and with us; they believe in us when all others doubt us; and they go without, so we don’t have to. In my life, my dad did all of these things. Nevertheless, perhaps the greatest of his deeds, the most valued of the gifts he gave me, was a comprehensive role model of the type of father I need to be. I did not realize it at the time, but he was showing me how to be patient when time was required and stern when obedience was necessary. He was teaching me to listen, not just to words, but to understand the actions the words implied. He was teaching me how to love unconditionally without borders or restrictions. The greatest gift my Father ever gave me was to show me how to be a good father. To all the fathers, grandfathers, step fathers, God- fathers, brothers and uncles that play the role of fathers, and men that generally stand in the gap that has been created by the absence of another, know that while it may often go unsaid, you are loved and appreciated. Happy Father’s Day! Councilman Oliver Gilbert III

Last month, City of Miami Gardens Employees hosted students at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex. Students met with code enforcement officers, police officers, the city architect, a human resources analyst and procurement specialists. Representatives from the fleet department showed students the city vehicles. “It is great to know there are programs that exist to give our youth an opportunity to see firsthand what grown-ups do to make a living,” said Carlo Hollis, Fleet Services’ Administrative Assistant. Miami Gardens Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Investigators instructed students about the importance of wearing seatbelts to prevent major injury during car accidents. City Architect Jimmie Allen showed pictures of the projects currently in construction like Brentwood Park football lights installation and completed projects like the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex. KAPOW partners business and community volunteers with elementary schools throughout South Florida. “KAPOW exposes students to career opportunities and helps them connect what they are learning to their futures in the workplace,”

said John Casbarro, KAPOW Coordinator. Human Resources Analyst Sandra Ruiz offered mock interviews to students. “The program was a great way to get involved and teach children from the community about different careers in government,” said Ruiz. “The children were very involved and had great questions.” For eight months, City staff volunteered with assigned classes at the local elementary schools, visiting once per month for one hour to teach various lesson plans i.e. teamwork, communication and diversity. Before you begin the lessons, a one-time training will show you how to implement the lessons and ensure success. Your participation will make a valuable contribution to the future of our community's young people and help them learn about careers in your field. Want to become a KAPOW volunteer? Our young people need to be inspired by you to work and succeed! Please contact KAPOW Director John Casbarro at john.casbarro@gmail.com, in Dade – 786-877-0334, or Broward, 954-680-3916.

•• PUBLIC SAFETY CORNER •• Miami Gardens police officers have participated in the Police Unity Tour for the last two years. The primary purpose of the Police Unity Tour is to raise awareness of Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty. The secondary purpose of the Police Unity Tour is to raise money for the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum. To participate in this ride the rider must be a police officer, retired police officer or a survivor of an officer killed in the line of duty. The rider must raise a minimum of $1,800.00, which is usually collected from the communities the officer works in or from family and friends. The rider must train for several weeks leading up to this event and then be able to ride 250 miles during the three day Police Unity Tour. The rider must also select a fallen law enforcement officer from the previous year and represent them for the ride. The rider must learn of the officer’s death, contact the fallen officer’s agency and attempt to make contact with a survivor of the fallen law enforcement officers’ family to explain what he/she is doing. The rider is provided with a blue memorial wrist band, which has been branded with the fallen officer’s name and end of watch on it. This band is worn from the beginning of the ride to the end. The band is then given to the survivor on the night of the candle light vigil. The Florida chapter, Chapter 8, began the ride in Portsmouth, VA with a 110 mile ride the first day ending in Tappahannock, VA. The second day traverses through 70 miles of the rolling “hills” of Virginia ending in Fredericksburg, VA. The third day is the big day, which is when approximately 1400 riders travel the final 70 miles to Washington DC, eventually meeting up at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium (RFK Stadium.) The riders come from all across the nation as well as other countries such as England and Canada. All the riders gather at the stadium to meet, talk and

share their stories of police work and the ride. They will then ride to the memorial together. The final two miles of the ride is held in downtown Washington DC, with traffic stopped so thousands of supporters and onlookers can watch the unified riders tirelessly arrive at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. At this time the riders provide the President of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial with the money raised from the supporters. This year all chapters raised $1.5 million dollars, the most in the fifteen years of the tours existence. The final event for the Police Unity Tour is the Candle Light Vigil, which is held at the Memorial. Chapter 8 was one of the chapters selected to escort the fallen officer’s survivors to their seats for the ceremony. This is a very touching and eye opening experience for the rider and the survivors. At this time, the blue memorial band is given to the fallen officers’ survivor. We appreciate the City of Miami Gardens and businesses throughout the City that have supported us throughout this event. This year’s riders were Detective Alex Barney, Detective Michael Horn, and Detective William Wagenmann.

•• FYI •• BY CHEF EMANUEL WASHINGTON This is Part One of a Five Part Soul Food and Soul Food Restaurant educational series. Throughout, we will investigate the what, when, where, why and how we arrived at this intersection in history. Soul Food Restaurants in America are going out of business at an alarming rate. I estimate that over the past decade, approximately one in four of all Soul Food restaurants in America have closed their doors permanently. This is a conservative estimate. How many Soul Food Restaurants have closed in your city in the last decade? Have you noticed? Can you name them? Do you wonder why? Do you know why? How does it affect you? How does it affect your family? How does this bulletin impact American History? Soul Food restaurants are in critical condition! The Family tree of America stands at the Crossroads of History. Which way will it turn? Will it follow the race car of capitalism and go to the left of fact? Will it turn right and plow the fields of faith? Will it falter from lack of interest and awareness, or will it stay on the righteous path of histories’ intention? Will the vitamins of American History nourish the soul of America or will a significant component of American History and Culture become lost in the hypnotism of everyday life? Will Soul Food and Soul Food restaurants withstand the test of time, or will it be our last will and testament to the prayers, sacrifices, contributions, and creative genius of an entire culture? I ask you these questions! Soul Food is in a lonely place with history right now. History and culture are critical to the encyclopedia of mankind. They keep score and record vital statistics of life itself. Furthermore, history chronicles man’s journey through time.

Part 2 of this series provides an indepth analysis of the dynamics and contributing factors in the wake of the current state of Soul Food restaurants. What will be the takeaways for future generations when history’s bell tolls? Will we go down in history as the home of the brave, land of the free minus identity and culture or will history record this moment as an international example of valor, resilience, perseverance, and unparallel determination? Soul Food is a significant component of American History and Culture. It is vital that we preserve and protect it. Where do you stand? Chef Emanuel is a prominent soul food critic. Recently relocated from Chicago, Il, he was formerly the Executive Chef and Food Service Director at The Department of Defense Analysis. Manage your Financial Condition like a Business

Most working people are employees and they think like employees when it comes to their financial condition. This means their focus is on salary, health insurance, 401k and vacation time. Yes, these benefits do impact your financial condition but it is one-sided. It is on the side of what you have (assets). We suggest that in order to attain financial independence, employees should begin to think and behave as a business owner. A business owner’s focus is not only on what they have but more importantly, what they owe (liabilities). This means accounts payable, which for individuals are items such as credit cards, car loans and mortgages. On this side of the balance sheet, the business owner wants to minimize expenses.

What you have (assets) minus what you owe (liabilities) results in what’s left over (net worth). $1 of assets and $1 of liabilities means $0 in net worth. $1 less in liabilities means you are $1 richer. Many employees with more salary will spend more, so they still have little net worth or financial independence. The car and house they own may be fancier but they may still be broke. Thebook,TheMillionaireNextDoor, describes how a business owner thinks and behaves. It is no secret how to become financially secure. It comes down to not thinking and behaving like an employee when it comes to your financial future. Tonkinson Financial provides hands-on money management for the middle class. 2nd Annual Trashion Show On Thursday, May 5, 2011 the City of Miami Gardens hosted its 2nd Annual Trashion Show. Through the Trashion Show we are able to engage our youth using an activity that sparks their interest while learning about recycling and how many things in their everyday lives can be reused. The show was an amazing display of fashion using what would otherwise be trash. One grand prize was awarded; while first, second and third place prizes were awarded in three categories: Grades 2nd -5th, 6th -8th and 9th -12th. Twenty contestants were judged by a panel of four judges based on the following criteria: Amount of recycled material used, creativity, neatness and style. Cash prizes were sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Miami Gardens.

•• COUNCIL CORNER ••

Councilwoman Lisa. C. Davis Presents the MOTHER OF THE YEAR Winners! and her colleagues salute you! Listed below are the letter’s submitted by the children of the winners:

Grand Prize Winner Elizabeth Elaine (May) Davis Our mother, Grandmother, Great- Grandmother A provider, Confidant, Nurturer, Teacher, Matriarch

In honor of Mother’s Day this year, Councilwoman Lisa C. Davis hosted a Mother of the Year contest offering members of the community an opportunity to share with the community , in 300 words or less, why their mother should be selected as Mother of the Year. The letters came pouring in from all over the City of Miami Gardens! The selection process was exciting as each participant had a colorful tale to tell about their mother and how valuable she was to their lives. Certainly the selection process was difficult as every mother deserved to be Mother of the Year, however only four (4) would win top honors and a prize which included gift baskets, gift cards, flowers and plaques. The grand prize was bestowed upon Ms. Elizabeth Elaine “May” Davis. Ms. Jackie Carter received First runner up honors whose name was submitted by her daughter Tracy K. Carter. Trellana Baxter received second place honors for her relentless spirit to persevere after losing a husband at the age of 27, and continuing to raise her family and stress the importance of education. Third place honors went to Ms. Carol Brown, whose daughter Bria Brown describes as compassionate caregiver, and a mother to the community, and fourth place winner Ms. Phyllis W. Sloan-Simpkins whose daughter Phytreasia Carroll who described her mother as a “No Quitter” and mission in life is to help others. In addition the City of Miami Gardens believes that all of its mother’s are winners and Councilwoman Lisa C. Davis

Moving her family to the Scott Lake neighborhood of Miami Gardens to provide a better life, she had become a beacon of love and Respect on the corner of 178th Terrace and 12th court. Not only is she a woman who has loved and raised her children, grand children, and greatgrandchildren, she has also loved, raised and supported so many others. From the local school children, to adults needing a simple “hello” or a hot meal, Elizabeth has loved and cared for so many in the Miami Gardens area, Everyone Knows Mrs., Davis and they know that beyond her doors is a genuine love and laughter for everyone to share. She is a Visionary, doing everything for those most important to her and little for herself. Choosing where she would live and raise her legacy was based upon her being able to be the woman she needed to be for her family. In close proximity to the 75, 42 and 83 bus lines so that not only could she get to work, but also that her children could get to neighborhoods schools and be educated, Her selflessness has never dwindled, knowing that the love she gave to the world would return to her and it has! As Elizabeth turned 85 in December 2009, those very people she had touched with her love, joined her to celebrate her life. From as far as the Midwest and the Caribbean, neighbors, adults she babysat as children, Friends , the friends of her children, relatives, and others she has cared for over the years all came to celebrate her and return all the love she has given to so many over the years. She is forever our Mother of the Year! Sabrina Hooks and The Children, Grands & Great-Grands Miami Gardens, Fl.

First runner up Jackie Carter Jackie Carter The mother of the year, phenomenal, caring, kind hearted, caters to the elderly, clothes and feeds disaster victims, helps giving jobs to who she can help, or the ones that people has said never will make it. Lay’s her life down for other’s expecting nothing but God’s rewards at the end. I am her daughter who was sentenced to 121 month s in federal prison. I got in situation among other family members which landed me behind bars, at the time, my husband had been deported, and I’m in prison and my twins out there no parents. When my mother found out where I was she went a picked up her grandchildren. I never told her where I was not had I spoken to her. My mother not only forced to raise babies again, she took care of me too and the other grandchildren. Mom served my time with me and not once judged me she listen and supported me, encouraged, prayed and held prayer groups for my release, totally supportive. What the devil meant for bad God got his glory. Through this situation has a great outcome. My mother taught me the value of a mother. She been my living example of a mothers role model, teaching me how to be a good mother, how to deal with forgiveness and unconditional love. My mother is my proverbs 31 women she is love God designed her well. I have never met anyone who knew my mother that had anything other than wonderful things to say about my mother. So I present my mother, your mother and I share her with everyone else mother, Jackie Carter. Sincerely, Tracy K. Carter Miami Gardens, Fl.

Second place Trellana Baxter Wow! I came this far! Do you want your Mother to be the first lady to be the nominee of Miami Gardens- Mother of the Year? Well, I do. To begin with, my mother Trellanna, is an angel! And the reason I say this is because a couple of months ago, my mother gave birth to a baby girl name Treniece R’ Mani Brown. My mom’s cutie pie weighed only 3 pounds. She was a miracle to me and my family and was as cute as a button. I love her! During the birth of my baby sister, my mother had a health condition that caused her to have a seizure. The baby was ok but it was my mother who ended up in I.C.U. Burt my

mother survived many obstacles while being in the hospital for almost one month. In addition to, my mother, Trellana, never gave up on bills or had her car repossessed, you see, my mother never let you know what she feels deep inside. She just keeps going no matter what she does. Everything that a mother should do for her children- well she does; plus more. She clothes us, feed us, loves us and gives us much advice. Continuously, Mother reminds us that no matter what you endure in life, there is light to the end of the rainbow. Furthermore, my mother lost her husband at the age of twenty-seven. To this day I ask myself, where my mother gets her strength especially after seeing family and friends walk away after the funeral. Plenty of nights my mother would cry herself to sleep because she did not know how she was going to take of us. So a family friend told my mother that it was time for her to start a new relationship with God! Immediately my mom reconnected us with God because only the Lord knows all the trials and tribulations we’ve gone through. Ultimately, this is why I am very proud of my mother because she keeps a smile on my face, clothes on our back and food on the table. All mama asks of is to “GO TO SCHOOL, GET AN EDUCATION FROM PRIMARY TO SECONDARY PLUS COLLEGE. “ She wants to see the day that all of her children receive a DEGREE so that we can get a decent job and take care of ourselves like she did. In short, I would like to descried my mother as being a strong, vibrant BLACK WOMAN that’s intelligent, brace and ambitious. My mother is the best and the only one! I love her with all my heart and want her to be the nominated for mother of the year representing Miami Gardens, Florida. Sincerely, Toni Baxter Parkview Elementary School- 5th grade Teacher: Mrs. C. Everson

Third place Carol brown CAROL BROWN FOR MOTHER OF THE YEAR I, Bria Brown, nominate my mother Carol Brown for the Mother of the Year. My mother is a strong, virtuous woman who will go above and beyond for her family. She is a supervisor for the MiamiDade County Juvenile Assessment Center, Advocacy Chair for the American Cancer Society and caretaker for her

page 13

Sincerely, Bria Brown Miami gardens, Fl.

Fourth place Phyllis W. Sloan-Simpkins

daughter, a 9 year cancer survivor. My mother is a woman who has a passion to save the children of this community. Every time a child walks into her office at the JAC she encourages them that they can achieve anything despite what obstacle they faced. Whenever someone, was in need, whether a stranger or friend, she was there to help in anyway. When I was diagnosed with cancer 10 years ago, my mother was there every step of the way. She made sure that I had the best of everything including doctors, nurses, and care. Witnessing your daughter go through an ordeal such as this would have crushed some but my mother preserved, stayed strong, kept the faith, and took some risks. As doctors were giving her the options to save my life, she chose an option many would second guess. Instead of amputation my mother decided to take me to Gainesville to see this radical doctor who in the end saved my leg and my life. She advocates every year for cancer research and treatment for families nationwide through the American Cancer Society. With the Help of the Community She has helped to raise over $200,000 over the past 10 years for the American Cancer Society. I believe my mother deserves the Woman of The Year Award because every day she continues to do the impossible for her family and community.

Dear Councilwoman Lisa C. Davis, I write this letter on behalf of an extraordinary lady my mother Ms. Phyllis W. Sloan-Simpkins. Firstly, let me inform you why my mother should be selected for the “Mother of the Year Award”. She has been a true inspiration and has helped many. She became a firefighter back in 1997 because of her love and admirations of helping people. She believed “Not to be Quitter” no matter what struggles and unexpected changes were in her life. She has been the link and bonding glue that has kept our family together. She founded Majestic’s Youth & Arts Academy, Inc. a 501(C)(3) Cultural Arts Organization in 2000 and Majestic’s Vision, Inc. in 2003 a Promotion L Production. She has come from being a high school drop out to a prestigious business woman and humanitarian. She achieved her high school diploma but did not stop there; she continued her education to achieve a B.P.A. degree and will be finishing her M.P.A in the fall of 2011 at Barry University. She has been a volunteer in the community since 1993 and is still serving on various boards today. Her strong values, experiences and outlook on life’s value made all the difference in not only her life but ours as well. She has three children George A. Hines Jr., Sophia S. Sloan and I. She is the proud grandmother of five (5) grandchildren. She’s an exemplar nary, unremarkable image and example of what today’s mom and grandmother are. She is an outstanding, kind hearted, hard working phenomenal woman. And I am proud to say, “Yes, she is my mother”! Cordially Yours, Ms. Phytreasia Antonia Carroll, Daughter
