A Story of Survival: Breazetha Smith In November of 2006, a Miami Gardens young mother of four thought her life was over when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She recalled days of her youth when she, “hoped to get some boobies some day." She never thought those same “boobies” would change her life. This is the triumphant story of Breazetha Smith, a breast cancer survivor! Her story like most women started while doing her own self-breast examination; she

detected a lump in her breast. She immediately scheduled a doctor’s appointment to have a mammogram. That same day she also had an ultrasound and a biopsy to make sure that she was covering all of her bases. Two weeks later the results came back positive. Like most women she determined that it was a death sentence. She immediately said to herself upon receiving the news, “I guess I’m gonna die from cancer.” Life became very stressful for Smith. Not

only was she battling cancer, but she was also struggling to make ends meet. All she could think about was the well being of her four children. Smith was working two jobs and raising four kids alone. Her bills were past due and her home was in foreclosure. Her future seemed bleak. Two weeks after the diagnosis she underwent the procedure to have a port put in for chemotherapy. Breazetha underwent 10 treatments of chemotherapy in addition to 41 treatments of radiation. In July of 2007, Breazetha underwent a bilateral mastectomy to have both of her breasts removed. Scared but assured after recovering from

SURVIVAL, from page 1

Scared but assured after recovering from her double mastectomy “Brezzy, as she is affectionately known to friends and family, decided to change her outlook and was determined to survive and keep a roof over the heads of her four children. She returned to work for Miami-Dade County Public Schools System where she has been employed for the past 18 years and has been part of the City of Miami Gardens family for 5 years. While bouncing back from her health scare, few years later, tragedy struck her family once again. On January 28, 2010 her 20 year old son was fatally gunned down in Opa-Locka. With her life looking upside down again, she refused to give up. She still had three kids to provide and live for. Her oldest daughter, now 22, stood by her side through everything along with her mother and sister. Smith knew that she needed to be resilient and show her surviving children that she was strong and no matter how tough life got, “never give up. Today life is better for her. She still mourns the loss of her son, but she finds great joy in spending time with her other children, grandson, family and close friends. Through her health challenge and loss,

her faith kept her encouraged and with the blessing of being able to work two jobs she has saved her home from foreclosure. Turning tragedy into triumph, this amazing woman took control of her situation. Like many breast cancer survivors that have their breasts removed, Brezzy feels as if she isn’t a complete woman. Not having breasts limits the type of clothing that she wears and now like the days of her youth she again looks forward to getting some “boobies. “There's hope. There's treatment. Don’t give up, This is a story about Breazetha Smith, a breast cancer survivor!

Home Depot Community Grant assists CMG Parks & Recreation Department with completing the Senior Residential Beautification Project BY SHANEIKA HARVEY This past summer the City of Miami Gardens Parks and Recreation Department was awarded the Home Depot Senior Residential Beatification Project Grant to refurbish two (2) senior citizen homes within the City of Miami Gardens. Interested seniors were required to complete an application, provide a current

income statement, and an assessment of their home. The Parks and Recreation and Public Works staff focused on restoring recipients landscaping, planting, painting, plastering, disposal of litter, and pressure cleaning of the homes. Staff received twenty (20) applications and of those applications, staff assessed the urgency of care, mobility and economic status of the homeowner. After the assessment was completed, two (2) residents received the good news that their homes were selected for this project. Seniors and community homeowners volunteered their time to assist with this project under the supervision of Parks and Recreation Staff. All volunteers and staff members

worked together and create a stronger community in improving living conditions and added value to their individual communities.

The City of Miami Gardens Parks and Recreation Department is continuing our efforts to Create Community Through People, Parks and Programs!

City of Miami Gardens is Accepting Applications for the 2012 CMG Citizens Academy On January 26th, 2012, the City of Miami Gardens will host the City of Miami Gardens 2012 Citizen’s Academy in the City Council Chambers, 1515 NW 167th Street. The 10-week educational program consists of interactive presentations by the various City departments and culminates into increased citizen awareness and involvement on boards, committees, and other community-wide initiatives. The Golden Garden Senior Program at Women’s Night Out BY JOSHUA RHODES During the month of October, the City of Miami Gardens Golden Garden Senior Program hosted an exciting night filled with fun, food and educational information on breast cancer. This event is held annually by Aventura Hospital and Medical Center in conjunction with Aventura Diagnostic Breast Center and the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center. This event was the peak of a month-long initiative to elevate awareness and early detection for breast cancer by promoting annual mammograms. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer will affect well over 200,000 new women by the end of 2011, but if breast cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is about 96 percent. The mission of Women’s Night Out was to celebrate over two million survivors in the United States who have survived breast cancer due to improved treatments, preemptive methods, and increased mammography screening rates. This event provided many individuals

Councilman Williams Helps Families Create Success and Achieve Prosperity Now, maybe more than ever, we must continue to help those families that are struggling through hard times. I want to share what I'm doing to help the hard working families of my city that face a 17% unemployment rate, which is higher than the County's or the country's rate. I support Trinity-Peacemakers Church in Miami Gardens ("Peacemakers") which helps families access public benefits that will help them become self sufficient. Peacemakers is part of the Department of Children and Families ACCESS Network that offers food stamps, Medicaid and temporary cash assistance.

Families can save time by coming directly to Peacemakers located at 17801 NW 2nd Avenue in Miami Gardens to apply for the benefits. Families can also access other self sufficiency services at the church. If you, a friend or family member needs assistance, please call 786-888-4357 for an appointment with a staff member who can help you or provide you more information. We can build a better future for all of all us and change lives every day by helping our friends and neighbors in need. Councilman Andre' Williams City of Miami Gardens

To a lesser or greater degree, we are either savers or spenders. The commercialization of the Holiday season is certainly there to constantly remind us to spend as much as we can. In terms of gifts, does the person you are buying for really need another sweater in Miami? Perhaps a gift of letting them know how special they are to you and how they make the world a better place would stay in their heart long after the sweater is worn out. As for saving, I suggest that you can be kind to yourself by improving your financial condition by opening or adding to your IRA as a Holiday present to yourself. There’s more excitement in paying down on those credit cards rather than adding to their balances. There’s no one there to say thank you for doing it, but your peace of mind should not need the compliments of others. Councilman Oliver Gilvert Gives a Warm Thanksgiving to All Thanksgiving is always seen as a time to show thanks, but what is often overlooked is that Thanksgiving is the beginning of the season of giving. As was the case on Saturday, November 19, 2011 when Councilman Oliver Gilbert (Miami Gardens, Seat 6) partnered with 100 Black Men of South Florida, the brothers of the Sigma Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, UPS, and the Lambda Tau Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated to provide and distribute 250 warm turkey dinners to the residents of Robert Sharp Towers in Miami Gardens and the guests of Betty T. Ferguson Community Center, also in Miami Gardens. “Everyone should have the opportunity to have Thanksgiving dinner” said Councilman Gilbert. “No matter what problems they face, everyone has a reason to be thankful.” Indeed they do have a reason to be thankful of Councilman Gilbert’s efforts this holiday season. Earlier in that day, the Councilman partnered with San Salvador

Masonic Lodge of Miami, FL to provide what could only be described as a couple hundred turkeys to families. The following Tuesday, November 22, 2011, Councilman Gilbert partnered with

Ted Lucas to deliver Turkeys to the homes of residents in Miami Gardens. This show of good will to the residents by Councilman Gilbert will go a long way towards curbing the cost of having

Thanksgivings for those families during these difficult economic times. Thanksgiving is the beginning of the season of giving, and it will not be overlooked by those residents.

My Experience as “Principal for the Day” BY SHELLIE RANSOM Recently, I was afforded the distinct honor of serving as Principal for the Day at Carol City Middle School. It was a special opportunity and a very rewarding experience because I walked away with a brand new perspective and respect for the educators that educate our children daily. My day at Carol City began promptly at 7:00am; walking the school halls with Assistant Principal Althea Dacosta, unlocking classroom doors while students were going to their homerooms. Seeing the students milling about and talking to their friends brought back many pleasant memories of my time in middle school. While many things have changed, a lot has not: The school bell rang at 7:20a.m., signaling the beginning of the school day for the students. There was a rhythm to the routine, and the students were well aware of it. Other than the technology in the classrooms and the style of dress, everything seemed familiar too me. Once the students were in class, the morning announcements were made via live broadcast, scripted and produced by the students. During morning announcements, I was introduced by the local student reporter and I briefly greeted the student body and shared with them that I would be their “Principal for the Day”. As the day rolled on, I had the opportunity to sit in on Principal Joyce Jones’ “Data Chat” with some of the Science and Language Arts teachers. During the “Data Chat”, student performance statistics from the baseline and benchmark testing administered earlier in the school year are reviewed. The “Data Chat” revealed that overall, the school has made substantial gains in proficiency; however, the teachers are still faced with many challenges to narrowing the success gap between low- and high-level students. The teachers stated that the tests require high-level critical thinking skills which are proving to be a challenge for many students. While our teachers face the challenge of providing the standard academic instruction to their students, they also face the challenge of raising test scores, in addition engaging the students through gaining their buy-in of the proposed strategies for successful testing. Teachers face many other challenges that distract or hinder students from learning, including crowded classrooms, issues related to socio-economic status, poor

study habits and most notably, lack of parental involvement which is a major concern. The lack of parent participation in parent/teacher conferences as a preventive measure to student failure is a primary concern for most educators. Based on Miami-Dade County School Board statistics, the overwhelming majority of students attending the school are economically disadvantaged. Many parents must work long hours or in many cases, work more than one job, sometimes more than two, in order to make ends meet. In spite of the challenges that attempt to defy the rules of learning and education, the teachers I met are committed to thinking outside the box; implementing new ideas, alternative teaching methods and testing strategies to accommodate each student’s learning style. As the day went on, I became engaged in many day-to-day activities performed by Principal Jones. Although teaching is rewarding, the system has some drawbacks that often make it difficult to get the job done. Carol City Middle School is currently under enrolled with a student body of approximately 680 students. Many of the students are being transferred to other schools under No Child Left Behind, which translates into fewer resources available to Carol City Middle School students. While the school administration is tasked manage the school with little resources available to them, the students are still fortunate to have a dedicated team of educators who believe in the business of learning; to provide students with a quality education and prepare them, not only for the next phase of higher education, but for a successful future. The most entertaining part of my day was lunch duty. I monitored the lunch room to ensure the students were behaving themselves appropriately. During this time, I took the opportunity to sit and talk to some of the students. They were quite inquisitive asking a number of different questions. Walking the halls, I was greeted with hugs and smiles from the students. My day ended at the faculty lunch which was most appetizing. I would like to thank Principal Jones, Assistant Principal DaCosta, and Assistant Principal Flores for a most memorable day. The insight gained has really been invaluable and with a new perspective on education, I hope to be part of the solution that brings more resources to the school as well as a positive influence on our youth!

CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS’ JUNIOR COUNCIL STUDENTS ATTENDS 41ST ANNUAL LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. Recently, the City of Miami Gardens’ Junior Council attended the 41st Annual Legislative Conference hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, D.C. The trip was chaperoned by Councilman Oliver Gilbert and sponsored by the City of Miami Gardens, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, and Vice Mayor Aaron Campbell, Jr. The Miami Gardens Junior Council is comprised of high achieving students from Miami Norland Senior High and Miami Carol City Senior High schools, who are members of their respective Student Government Associations. These students are interested in leadership, youth empowerment and learning more about local government. Each school has seven members that sit on this council. Miami Carol City Senior, Courtney Johnson, serves as the Junior Council Mayor and Amanda Brown, from Miami Norland, serves as Vice-

Mayor. Other members of the Junior Council that attended the conference were: Jameesha Toomer; Marvin Nicoleau; Diamond Hadley; Julius Hethington; Keondre Heard; Allie Hinson; Suntrell Butler; Daniel Tippenhauer; Imir Hall; Breanna Hunt. During the Annual CBC Weekend the students attended a session entitled “The High School Class of 2012” hosted by Congresswoman Frederica Wilson. The panel featured Florida Memorial University’s President, Dr. Henry Lewis, III; United Teachers of Dade President, Karen Aronowitz; Florida International University’s Men’s Basketball’s head coach, Isaiah Thomas; and the Miami Gardens Junior Council Mayor, Courtney Johnson; and Vice-Mayor Amanda Brown. The session was moderated by civil rights activist, Reverend Al Sharpton. The dis-

cussion centered on the state of education and what awaits the high school graduating class of 2012. The Junior Council also attended a reception in honor of former Florida Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek where they met Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), Miami–Dade County School Board Representative, Dr. Wilbert T. Holloway and as well as other elected officials. While in Washington, the Junior Council toured the capital and met with Rep John Lewis (D-GA), a civil rights icon and Democratic Party Chair, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL). The Junior Council also visited the sites of the brand new Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. It was a magnificent experience for the

Junior Council as it was the first time many of the students had ever been to Washington, D.C. Aliyah Thomas, an 11th grader from Miami Carol City stated, “to a group of 13 intellectual high school urban kids from Miami Carol City and Miami Norland, this trip showed us a different perspective on life; life we only see on television.” Jameesha Toomer, a Miami Norland student shared, “If I could go back and do the whole trip over again, I would gladly do so because it was a great experience. My first time in D.C. is one of the most memorable experiences in my life.” For more information about the City of Miami Gardens’ Junior Council and their upcoming activities, contact Hilary Marshal, Administrative Assistant to Council at (305) 622-8000 ext. 2793 or email hmarshall@miamigardens-fl.gov

Red Light Camera Program a Success BY DR. DANNY O. CREW, CITY MANAGER The lady came into the City C l e r k ’s

o f f i c e obviously upset, insisting that she had been a safe driver for over 20 years and there is no way she would have run a red light, even on a right turn.

After calming down, a City staffer looked up her ticket on the internet and replayed the video of her incident. As she approached the intersection and the red light, she dutifully looked left and saw no cars coming. As we often do, without further thinking, she made a “California Stop”. This is when a driver coasts around the corner on a right-on-red without coming to a full stop. The lady watched intently as the tape played and then, she gasped. Unknown to her, just as she was rounding the corner, a pedestrian stepped off the corner almost directly into her path. The pedestrian quickly jumped back, but the lady never knew how close she had come to hitting the person. Shaken, she thanked the staff and asked for directions to the cashier’s office. In the past 2 years, the Miami Gardens Red Light Camera Program has cut accidents at the camera intersection by 83%. This is a staggering number. This means almost 200 fewer accidents. It means that there are 200 families where no one was killed or maimed, or at the very least, had to deal with all of the consequences of car insurance and repair. No one likes to get a ticket, but it is a small price to pay for protecting yourself and your family. The law has always required a stop on red. We all know that, whether it’s a straight run-through or a right on red, RED MEANS STOP. For a

right turn on red it means STOP, look to the left, to the right and back to the left.

It’s a law we can LIVE with!

A Message from your Public Works Director:

Swales as an Environmental Benefit

BY TOM RUIZ

simply follow a few basic guidelines:

Swales around the City are strips of land usually located in front of a house between the sidewalk and the street. Swales play an important role in the protection of our environment and the beauty of our City. First, they are an area for natural drainage for stormwater that falls on streets, sidewalks, and driveway approaches. Swales allow the stormwater to drain and percolate back to the ground for our drinking water. Second, they protect our environment by filtering the stormwater from the street, picks up the oils, pesticides and lawn fertilizers that wash away from the property. The swales along with naturally filter out and reduce these pollutants, decreasing their loading on groundwater resources. If not treated by the swales, these pollutants would eventually end up in our canals, lakes, ocean and our drinking water. Swales should be kept grassy, not just for beauty, but to catch these contaminants. Swales paved with asphalt or built up with dirt or gravel can cause health, environmental, and aesthetic hazards. It is against the Public Works Manual to have anything on the swale other than grass. Stormwater can collect and stagnate or may run off the paved surface, picking up leaves, litter, animal waste, oil, etc., that will runoff to other areas to include flooding your neighbors. Property owners are required to maintain the swales adjacent to their property in good condition {City Code: Property Maintenance: Chapter 16, article #3, Section # 16-57 (e, h)} helping us to protect our canals and waterways. To ensure the swale areas stay in good condition,

• Keep your Swale free of leaves, limbs and any other debris. Dispose of debris and oil properly, instead of placing them in your swale. Call Miami Dade County Solid Waste before your bulk trash is brought out to the swale for pickup. This will eliminate the grass from dying and keep the swale open if a storm approaches. • Avoid parking vehicles on the swale. This will allow the grass to grow healthy and keep the soil loose so water can filter and soak into the ground more easily. On a side note, if you have to park on the swale please do not park on top of the sidewalks. • Do not place asphalt, gravel, dirt or any material other than grass in sawles, to allow the water drain into the ground. Landscaping your swale area can be pleasing to the eye, but it also disrupts the natural drainage qualities of the swale. Consider landscaping behind your property line; you will still add beauty to your home while keeping the swale in its natural state. The City continues to plant trees in the swale area, not just to beautify and provide oxygen, but trees reduce water runoff by breaking rainfall thus allowing the water to flow down the trunk and into the earth below the tree. When mulched, trees act like a sponge that filters this water naturally and uses it to recharge groundwater supplies. All landscaping within the swale areas shall be in accordance with established procedures approved by the city to include no plants or trees that are prickly to the touch and planting trees/bushes that obstruct visibility on intersections and driveways.

Ask an MD2B: The Importance of Diet and Exercise Almost all of us will face chronic illness at some point during our lives. Our bodies are not perfect, and as we age, we are likely to get chronic diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. Fortunately, what we call environmental factors play a major role in whether we get these illnesses. Being physically active and maintaining a proper diet serves as our best protection against chronic diseases. Although this information may not be new to you, this article will hopefully provide you with some helpful exercise and nutrition tips. ‘Exercise.’ According to the American College of Sports Medicine, being active helps to prevent a long list of diseases, including heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, and certain types of cancer. Exercise also helps to relieve stress and improve wellness. Which type of physical activity is best, and how much is necessary to improve health, is a topic of debate within the medical community. However, try to find a physical activity that works for you. Exercising is easier to maintain if you enjoy the activity. Some people prefer to play sports such as basketball or soccer, while others are more comfortable running or biking. What’s important is this: some exercise is better than none. Even adding a short walk to your daily routine can improve your health and wellbeing. ‘Diet.’ Proper ‘diet’ refers to the lifestyle changes that a person makes in order to get healthier. Eating good foods not only helps prevents chronic diseases, but it also decreases stress on the body – this leads to higher feelings of overall energy and wellness. Below is a simple list of nutritional recommendations. The

list may seem long, but following even a couple of these suggestions will make you feel better! • Eat 3 to 7 servings per day of vegetables, especially green and leafy veggies • Eat 3-5 servings of fruit per day • Eat at least 2-3 servings of protein every day, preferably fish (not fried) • Eat whole grains instead of processed grains • Limit intake of dairy/milk products to 0-3 servings per day • Get at least two teaspoons of ‘good’ oils (monounsaturated – like flaxseed or olive) • Eat very small amounts (maximum of 75 calories) of processed or sugary foods • Take an appropriate multivitamin (ask your doctor or pharmacist which one is best for you) These are general recommendations, and this information may apply differently to different people. Please see your doctor before doing any new exercises or changing your diet – this will help you make sure that the changes you want to make are safe for you. Sincerely, Edward R. Let’s Move! Did you know that today, almost one in three children in America are overweight or obese? The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where almost 40% of the children are overweight or obese. To help combat these statistics, the City of Miami Gardens and Mayor Shirley Gibson have partnered with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign. The partnership, through Resolution 201-012-1405 initiated by Mayor Gibson, is dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, resulting in future generations of children healthy enough to pursue their goals. This yearlong commitment was launched on January 15, 2011 during the Family Fun and Fitness Festival. This free event at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex promoted health and wellness and featured the first annual Mayor’s 5K Walk/Run Fitness Challenge, farmer’s market, health screenings, healthy cooking and exercise demonstrations. Additionally, the Health Empowerment Series was offered monthly at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational

Complex to discuss various health topics including heart, back, and lung health as well as diabetes and stress management. The Parks and Recreation Department further included children in this initiative, by enhancing its health and exercise components of the Shining Stars After-School program. The afterschool program also joined First Lady Obama’s initiative to be a part of the Guiness Book of World Records for the greatest number of jumping jacks within a 24 hour period, with 248 individuals taking part in the event on October 11th. The Parks and Recreation Department offered many programs and developed partnerships with various entities to allow Miami Gardens residents the opportunity to live up to Mayor Gibson’s challenge to stay active throughout 2011. Through athletics, biggest loser competitions, martial arts, swim lessons, senior activities, SilverSneakers, group exercise classes, and a walking club, residents have many opportunities for healthy living. The culmination of the first year of the Let’s Move! partnership will be celebrated at the Recreation and Fitness Exposition (formerly the Family Fun and Fitness Festival) which will be held on Saturday, January 21st at Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex. The free event will include the 2nd Annual Mayor’s 5k Walk/Run Fitness Challenge beginning at 7:30am and health screenings, recreational demonstrations, and much more beginning at 10am! For more information, please contact the Parks and Recreation Administrative Office at 305-622-8080. Get up, get active, and stay healthy!
