Village residents invited to annual Celebration Picnic BY EUGENE FLINN
Village Branch Library is nearing completion
Mayor As mayor, I am proud to announce that the Village of Palmetto Bay will be holding its Seventh Annual Celebration Picnic for residents on Saturday, Mar. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Coral Reef Park, 7895 SW 152 St. (east side). Bring your friends, round up your children, and pack your blankets and sunscreen for an afternoon of good old-fashioned fun. As we have done annually since our first year of incorporation in 2002, the Village of Palmetto Bay hosts this signature event as our way of saying “thank you” to all residents. This year’s picnic offers something for everyone — entertainment by local schools, children’s activities, rides, local fire and police demonstrations, and, of course, food — including everyone’s favorite: roasted corn on the cob. Last year, thousands of residents attended and enjoyed a great day at the park. This year’s event is anticipated to be even bigger and better, with performances in the village’s newly constructed gazebo and a number of traditional community picnic games such as a hulahoop contest, tug-o-war, potato sack race, and a bubblegum blowing contest. It’s a great way to spend your Saturday, and most importantly, a great way to spend time with family, friends and neighbors. One of the big events this year will be a special game of America’s favorite pastime — you guessed it — baseball. Our local high schools, Palmetto High and Coral Reef High, once again will com-

County begins move to use biodiesel in fleet operations BY SEAN MCCRACKINE iami-Dade county manager George Burgess recently announced that the county would begin integrating 5 percent biodiesel into the fuel mix for county fleet operations beginning in April. “This is a significant step forward,” said Miami-Dade Commissioner Katy Sorenson, who has been advocating the use of renewable fuels in the county fleet since 2001. “I’m glad that the manager has determined that the time is right to move our operations to clean, renewable energy.” Commissioner Sorenson — recently named chair of the Budget, Planning and Sustainability Committee — sponsored a resolution in 2001 that directed the county to research the use of alternative fuels. That was followed by a resolution in 2007 that called for the development of a five-year strategy for integrating biofuels into the county fleet. “Miami-Dade County uses about 17 million gallons of diesel fuel a year to run all of the heavy equipment — everything from transit buses to garbage trucks — so our demand for biofuel can prime the market for everyone else to have access to renewable fuel blends,” Commissioner Sorenson explained. “The manager’s goal of moving Miami-Dade to 20 percent

That work is expected to take about six to eight weeks, so the opening ceremonies likely will take place in mid to late April. “We had a meeting at the site last Tuesday [Feb. 17] with [village] manager Ron Williams, and it looks as if we’re about 60 days away from being ready,” Philip Ludovici said. “Even more good news is that the money

Local residents place second in Dubai 24-hour auto race BY LEE STEPHENS The SpeedCom Communications/ Marcos Racing International team of Toto Lassally, Jim Briody, Scott Finlay and brothers Keith and Steve Goldin driving a BMW 120 scored a hardearned second-place finish in the Diesel 1 (D1) Class in the recent Toyo Tires 24hour race at the Dubai Autodrome. The team’s troubles included deliberately parking the car for the majority of the final hour of the race after the team suspected transmission problems 90 minutes from the finish. The No. 95 crew fired up the BMW only 10 minutes before the checkered flag was scheduled to fly and Lassally easily drove the final three laps of the race and took the checkered flag on the track. “We had to do it with some drama,” said Lassally, who put together the successful driver lineup that capably handled the No. 95 BMW throughout the race. “This is a great moment. To come run a race internationally with old time friends, great drivers, a great team, great mechanics and a fantastic crew and team owner that gave us a fantastic car is incredible. To achieve this in a beautiful country like Dubai is just awesome. It’s a great feeling and we are all very proud of this team.” After recovering from an early morning rear axle and differential assembly change that saw Cor Euser’s Marcos Racing team make the swap in under 30 minutes, the No. 95 appeared set to cruise to an almost certain second place finish behind the class winning No. 99 Al Faisal Racing BMW 320D. Keith Goldin was in his final stint in the noon hour, however, when he heard some suspect noises in the car. “I heard like a rolling noise, like a thumping inside and it sounded like it

was coming from the transmission,” Goldin said. “The team seems to think that there were some rocks in the brake calipers, so we got lucky. Lassally finished the race and said the car was running smoothly, so apparently it was a rock. But we had that 60-lap lead over third place and there was no sense in taking any chances. How it all came together at the end, even though we had to park the car for awhile, everything worked out better than we expected.” Lassally, the only one of the No. 95’s drivers with previous experience in the Dubai 24H, said he could have kept going even after the checkered flag.

“There is nothing wrong with this car and I could drive it for 24 hours more,” said Lassally, who is a native of El Salvador now living in Florida. “This car is good to go. I could drive another 24hour race and we would be on the podium with it as well. I can honestly say none of the drivers made any major mistakes at all.” The Goldin Brothers, from the Pinecrest/Palmetto Bay area, brought their close friend, frequent teammate and fellow South Floridian Finlay with them to Dubai. “This is like the best thing that we have done in a long time,” Finlay said. “Every new win is the best win, so right
now this is the best win.” The entire race car and crew operation was put together by Euser and the Marcos International Racing team who matched their team’s career best result in 24H Series competition. “The drivers were great, they know the game and have the right attitude, and that is why they are on the podium,” Euser said. “Our crew guys are trained and they never stop. They would absolutely drop dead before they would stop. That’s their attitude and that is the team. They always go for the maximum and they are absolutely 50 percent of the goal we achieved here.”

The winner of the game will take home the coveted “Mayor’s Cup.” Be at the baseball field across the canal from the picnic at 1 p.m. to cheer on your favorite team. Additionally, I have to confirm that the rumors are true. Your mayor will be spending time in a dunk tank at the Celebration Picnic with all proceeds going to “Kristy House,” a local agency that provides a healing environment for child victims of sexual abuse and their families. This is the same agency that we supported through a toy drive during the recent holiday season, and we are pleased once again to lend our assistance. One exciting new addition this year is a display by the Village’s Historic Preservation Advisory Board. Members of this team will be on hand to share interesting information about the many historic places around town. They’re even sponsoring a bus tour during the event of some of these sites, but it’s firstcome, first served, so seek out this booth early and sign up. Event organizers still are encouraging
community partners to participate this year as event sponsors. With more than 3,000 picnic-goers expected to attend, local businesses can benefit greatly through exposure at this huge event. If interested, please call Josie Bober in our Parks and Recreation Department at 305-259-1234. A special thanks to Eastern Financial Florida Credit Union for their sponsorship of the Mayor’s Dunk Tank — a very generous $450 contribution — and also to Rick Roca of Hole-in-the-Wall Sub Company of Palmetto Bay, for providing complimentary subs. Be “green” and consider riding your bike to the event this year. But if you must drive, parking will be available in the park’s two south parking lots located along SW 152nd Street and at St. Richard’s Catholic Church just southeast of Coral Reef Park off 152nd Street. The park’s east parking lot will be reserved for police, fire, and picnic vendors. For more information, please call Village Hall at 305-259-1234. See you at the Picnic!

Ludovici, an area attorney, activist and “founding father” involved in the incorporation of the village, took a
moment last week to express his views on the wonderful progress of the library and about having the library park named for his family. “I’m extremely honored and pleased to see this happen,” Ludovici said. “How do you stay humble with something like this?” He and his son, Edward, also are pleased to report that their business, Ludovici and Ludovici, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

through reprocessed restaurant grease or by growing it on our farms. A number of companies have shown interest in establishing biofuel production facilities and agricultural producers in Miami-Dade have been exploring a variety of crops, including algae production, which could provide a local supply of fuel.

South Florida artist Ewa Perz exhibits at Wirtz Gallery Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR
AROUND TOWN We received a notice that renowned artist Ewa Perz will have her art exhibited at the Wirtz Gallery in South Miami, at 5750 Sunset Drive, from March 2 – 31, 2009. “All that Color” is the name of the exhibition and the opening reception is on March 4 from 6 - 9 p.m. “Ewa Perz was born in Gdañsk, Poland. She received a master degree in biology from the University of Gdañsk, but found her true passion to be in fine art. She left her job as a scientist to pursue her desire to create art. Living in Europe and Latin America before coming to the United States, paired with worldwide travel and taking classes with contemporary masters (Felo Garcia in Costa Rica, David Laffel in Santa Fe), allow Ewa an extensive visual approach to her paintings. Global cultures, styles and trends strongly influence her choices in theme. Ordinary shapes and colors are manipulated by Ewa’s expressive realism into breathtaking compositions. Her works are unique and compelling.” Currently, Ewa lives in South Florida with her husband and two children. Her works can be found in many private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe. You can see Ewa’s artwork at www.EwaPerz.com. The “All that Color” exhibition is in collaboration with Baptist Health South Florida Foundation. The Artist donated
her oil on canvas painting “Roses for Hearts” to the Foundation and to be auctioned at the 49th annual Mercury Ball at Doral Resort & Spa on March 14, 2009. All proceeds from the sale of this painting will benefit the South Miami Heart Center. The “All that Color” exhibit will remain open to the public through the end of March 2009. Commissioner brings some sense to stadium financing R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Feb. 13 was to be the final vote approving the building of a baseball stadium for Jeffrey Loria, millionaire owner of the Florida Marlins. Miami City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff injected some common sense into the commission meeting when he made a simple statement and asked an even simpler question. If the building of a stadium will materially increase the value of the team franchise, shouldn’t both the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County have some financial guarantee that if the franchise is sold, at an enhanced profit, the city and the county would get their money back? A baseball franchise without a stadium of its own, without all the fringe benefits, has one value. A franchise with the ability to profit from sky boxes, restaurants, naming rights, etc. will have a far greater value.
Commissioner Sarnoff’s logic is simple. If taxpayer money will make the franchise more valuable, then the taxpayer should benefit if the team is ever sold. I can’t remember anyone bringing up that thought before. It is so simple, it is so logical; not one penny of taxpayer money should go into financing the ballpark without Sarnoff’s proposed guarantees. Sarnoff said if the City of Miami spends $94 million building a parking garage for the team, and this increases the value of the franchise, he wants the city to get its money back if the franchise is sold. I like that! Obviously, that concept should be expanded to cover the taxpayers’ dollars that the county, ever so generous, is just dying to give to the Marlins franchise’s owner. Of course, the question should be expanded to ask: If the baseball franchise is so financially enhanced, why isn’t the ballpark being financed by Loria, instead of our financially strapped community? That way, he wouldn’t have to share the profits at a future date. Sarnoff is being made out to look like the “bad guy” in the whole proposition.
VIEWPOINT Stadium supporters ask, “How dare Sarnoff suggest a contract modification at the last moment, a plan that was all but approved by our elected officials?” I ask, “Why was the final game plan designed by our county administrators, only provided the county and city commissioners two days before they were to vote?” After hours of wrangling, the Miami City Commission put off the “final” vote until Mar. 12. County commissioners sat in their offices all afternoon waiting to see what the city would do. Finally, as the sun set, they ended their vigil and went home. This gives opponents of the plan, those commissioners with common sense who feel that even if it’s logical to finance the stadium with taxpayer money, that this is not the time to do it. Commissioners must find a way to end this whole idea of
spending $1.9 billion of taxpayer money to finance a building for a privately owned, for profit, business. Interestingly, the Concert Association of Florida just filed for bankruptcy and is closing its doors as ticket sales are so poor that they can’t cover the cost of bringing an array of concerts to the community. What makes Jeffrey Loria, the few thousand loyal team fans and our elected officials think that there is sufficient discretionary money in the community to increase ticket sales with a new stadium?

As a resident of South Miami since 1990, I know the friendly, family feeling the employees give me whenever I go in. My father, James McCants Sr., has banked with First National Bank of South Miami since I was a child, despite living near MetroZoo. I remember how they always treated my father in good spirit and with enthusiasm. The Church we attend also has a lot of members banking at First National Bank of South Miami. As South Miami Community Redevelopment Agency’s Community Outreach Program Coordinator, part of my functions is to help uplift the most needy of South Miami and I have always heard good things about FNBSM. The Bank has always been a valuable asset in this community. Tax season: Need advice? Beware of tax prep scams
Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY If you earned $42,000 or less last year, you could be eligible for free tax help through several non-profit, communitybased programs. However, before you spend hundreds of dollars for high-priced tax advice, remember: there are IRS-certified volunteers ready to help. Check out the Tax Section on our CBS4 Website and you’ll find an interactive map we put together for you. It can automatically find the closest free tax help in your neighborhood. Unfortunately, tax season also is a season for fraud and tax scams. The Florida Attorney General’s Office is besieged by complaints about fraudulent tax preparers each year, along with the usual array of issues about identity theft and fraudulent charities. The attorney general advises consumers to ask about service fees up front and avoid tax preparers who claim they can obtain larger refunds than anyone else. “As tax season approaches and Floridians get ready to file for tax returns, scams begin to develop and con artists begin looking for ways to take
advantage of people,” said Attorney General Bill McCollum. Protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud by educating yourself prior to preparing your taxes. To avoid being scammed by a non-legitimate tax preparer, consumers should get the credentials of the tax preparer and ask if he or she belongs to a state board or bar association that requires continuing education. The Attorney General’s Office also recommends that consumers shop around for quotes and ask tax preparers if they will represent consumers who are audited or pay any audit-related fees. Only attorneys, certified public accountants (CPAs) and enrolled agents can represent taxpayers before the IRS in any matter — including audits, collections and appeals. To avoid online tax scams never give out personal identification information to anyone who is soliciting money. Do not respond to emails asking for information relating to refunds. The IRS’s website is the only legitimate source for checking on refund status. To file complaints about tax-related scams and any other types of fraud, call the Attorney General’s Fraud Hotline at 1-866-966-7226, or file a complaint online at <www.myfloridalegal.com>.

Gulliver’s MS girls basketball team finishes perfect season BY BAY PROBY Gulliver’s Girls Middle School Basketball Team won 14 straight games en route to its second undefeated season in the past three years, making the 2008-09 accomplishment particularly noteworthy. “In what was supposed to be a transition year for the team — with only two starters returning — the season turned out to be very special,” said girls basketball coach Ebony Rhodes. “We want to thank the entire team for all of their hard work and their families for their support.” Gulliver opened the season with a dominating 30-13 victory at Key Largo School, a traditionally tough opponent. Team captain Stephanie Rubin scored a season high 14 points in the game. Next up was the home opener against Westminster Christian where the team escaped with a hard-fought 27-23 victory. Leading the team in scoring were cocaptain Melanie Brooks with 10 points and Denise Campbell with eight points. The game that defined the winning season was the annual rivalry where
Gulliver beat Ransom, 27-23, in double overtime. “Ransom had beaten Gulliver both times last year, so the Gulliver team wanted this win in the worst way,“ said girls basketball coach Matt Telepman. “Ransom held a 14-9 lead with less than five seconds to play when Adrienne Cassel banked a three-pointer to send the game into overtime. Daniella Fuertes won the game in the second overtime when she rebounded her missed second foul shot jumper to seal one of the most intense and exciting games in Gulliver Girls Middle School Basketball history.” The team played its best basketball of the season in the SFMSC tournament, dominating Miami Country Day School, 36-11, and then defeating Ransom in the championship game, 31-13. Melanie Brooks was the tournament MVP and was joined by teammate Stephanie Rubin as All-Tournament team members. With an undefeated season in the balance, Ransom loomed as the last game of the season. In the confines of Gulliver Prep’s “Blue Dungeon,” the teams both knew what was at stake. The

With the score tied at 11-11, Melanie Brooks was fouled and went to the charity stripe for what would be her two most important foul shots of her young career. Brooks had shot just over 17 percent for the year from the foul line, but knocked down both shots, and the Raiders hung on for a 13-11 victory. Isa Granados, who did not join the team until the third game of the season, figured prominently in the team’s suc-
cess. She finished third in scoring. Granados was joined by Brooks, Campbell, Rubin and Cassel as three-year players for the team, having been members in the sixth and seventh grade as well. Cara and Tesi Zito, seventh grade twins, started several games together, contributing excellent defensive efforts. Other team members were eighth grader Brittany Schrager, seventh graders Meaghan Sylver and Emily Kirsner, and sixth graders Emily Deutsch, Claire Hebb, Madeline Fine and Rylee Hollub. Sixth grader Lauren Waldman was the team manager.

Five Miami-Dade County public schools are among 16 schools across the nation being recognized for increasing access to Advanced Placement (AP) courses among traditionally underserved students. The College Board recently released its fifth annual “AP Report to the Nation.” The public schools earned the distinction of having the largest number of African American and/or Hispanic students from the class of 2008 achieving success (a score of 3 or higher) on specific AP Exams. Barbara Goleman Senior High School had the largest number of Hispanic students achieving success on the AP Art History Exam. Coral Reef Senior High School had the largest number of Hispanic students achieving success on the AP English Language, AP English Literature, and AP European History Exams. Design and Architecture Senior High School had the largest number of African
American and Hispanic students achieving success on the AP Studio Art Exam. Miami Killian Senior High School had the largest number of Hispanic students achieving success on the AP Human Geography Exam. Miami Palmetto Senior High School had the largest number of Hispanic students achieving success on the AP Environmental Science Exam. AP prepares students for college success and helps offset college costs. Research shows that AP students are much more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree in four years than their peers. Participation and success in AP courses also helps students qualify for college scholarships. The College Board is a not-for-profit membership association with a mission to connect students to college success and opportunity. The College Board’s AP program offers 37 courses and exams and provides students with the opportunity to take college-level courses and earn college credit or placement, while still in high school.

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, FEBRUARY 3, 2009 - A top official at the state Office of Insurance Regulation said Tuesday night that regulators believe the private insurance market could absorb potentially all of the 900,000-plus property insurance policies that would be shed if State Farm were allowed to pull out of Florida as it has proposed to do. State Farm has proposed a twoyear pull out, and company officials told a House Insurance Committee Tuesday that they couldn't say precisely what might be able to change the company's mind, given its precarious financial situation. The company was recently turned down by state regulators for a 47 percent rate increase and company officials told legislators that it can't bear any more losses in the property market in Florida, given the state's hurricane record, regulatory environment and a recent increase in the amount of discounts that customers can get for stormhardening their homes.
THE MIAMI HERALD, JANUARY 27, 2009 - Saying its finances are weakened, State Farm's Florida unit wants to get out of the business of property insurance in the state. The company, Florida’s largest private insurer of homes and condos with 1.2 million policies, wants to keep only auto insurance, it said in a statement. Other State Farm units would still sell life, health and other financial services, it said in a statement. Under State Farm’s proposal, it would phase out of the property insurance business over two years, giving existing customers time to find new coverage. If State Farm’s plan is approved by state insurance regulators, that means it will no longer write the full range of property policies, including homeowners, condo, renters, boaters, mobile home, business property, commercial liability and commercial marine. As seen in Insurance News a publication of the Latin American Association of Insurance Agencies.

Adopt A Shelter Dog Calendar cover
BY SANDRA WINN Animal lovers often wish they could save all the animals in the world, but that isn’t realistic. Even just rescuing one or two requires extra space, time and finances to support them. Miami artist Debra Cortese felt that way too, until she found a way to help as many animals as possible by tapping into her creativity and making the Adopt a Shelter Dog Calendar for 2009. The extra large (17-inch wide) shelter dog calendar is filled with adorable, precious, cute, charming, and outright funny canines. Look at those irresistible faces! Can’t you hear them almost begging, “Please help me?”
(Images by Debra Cortese)
Cortese gives 50 percent of her profits from Adopt a Shelter Dog Calendar sales, as well as other Art for the Animals items to Miami-Dade Animal Shelter’s Pet Detective and Adopt a Shelter Pet programs that help find homes for lost, stray and abandoned animals. The other 50 percent helps her with the cost of her art, production and distribution fees. If an Adopt a Shelter Dog Calendar doesn’t suit your fancy, she also has the cover shot on tote bags, coffee mugs, magnets, and doggie T-shirts. There also are Wall Calendar Prints of each Dog of the Month, all available at Cortese’s CafePress shop at <www.cafepress.com/debracortese>. Click on the “Art For The Animals” Dalmatian.

How to Select a Fitness Center BY JOE TALENT Everyone is different. People of different ages with different body types will require different fitness training and conditioning. Let your fitness goals guide your search. Before you select a gym, decide on your fitness goals. No one fitness club or piece of equipment is the perfect fit for every fitness need. Figure out what you need to work on. If your goal is maintaining healthy heart you may want to focus on aerobic fitness. If you are targeting that “magazine style” body you may want to focus on strength training or it may be just improving your tennis game. Look for a facility that will allow you to pursue your goal. If you want to focus on weight training, then you may not care whether a swimming pool is available. If you prefer to work out on exercise equipment, a wide assortment of exercise classes won’t be as important to you. Having your fitness level assessed by an exercise or medical professional also can help you decide what areas need work. He or she may be able to suggest specific activities that will help you, such as yoga or stretching classes to increase your flexibility. If you still aren’t sure of your fitness goals, consider joining an all-purpose facility with a large variety of classes and equipment to explore your exercise options. Keep these factors in mind as you sort through the options: Location: Is the health club or fitness center near your home or work? Choose a facility that isn’t too far out of the way of your daily activities. You’ll be less likely to make the excuse, “But it’s too far away.” Hours: Many fitness centers open early and close late to give early bird or late-night exercisers some flexibility. Check with the facility you’re looking into to make sure it will be open at the times you plan to exercise. Envir onment: Is the health club clean? Check out the equipment, floors and locker room. Also consider the overall atmosphere — is this somewhere you’ll enjoy spending time? Equipment: Does the facility have the equipment you’re interested in using? How much equipment is out of order? Too many “Out of order” signs might be a clue to poor maintenance. Does the facility offer activities and equipment suited for your unique health needs? For example, if you have arthritis, an aquatic aerobics class in an indoor or
Whether you're looking to improve your skills in boxing, thaiboxing, or mixed martial arts; or become stronger and outdoor pool may match your goals for achieving a higher level of aerobic fitness or flexibility. Accessibility: Is the facility and equipment accessible for people with disabilities? For example, if you use a wheelchair for mobility, is there a wheelchair ramp to ease you into the swimming pool for flexibility exercises or aquatic aerobics? Are the hallways wide enough for a wheelchair to pass? Is there an elevator? Are lockers and shower facilities wheelchair accessible? Classes: If you’re interested in fitness classes, find out what kinds are offered and when. It doesn’t matter how great the classes at a facility are if they’re never at a convenient time. Friendly employees: Do the staffers say hello and smile? Do they circulate around the exercise area, offering tips and encouragement? A caring and friendly staff can go a long way toward helping you stay focused on your fitness goals. Reputation: Talk with other members of the fitness center about their experiences at the facility. You might also want to check with your local Better Business Bureau before entering into any contract with the club. Find out if any complaints have been registered against the facility. It’s up to you to follow through. It is not enough to join a gym. You must put in the work to reap the health benefits. But by joining a club that has what you need you’re more likely to succeed in meeting your fitness goals. Copyright © 2006 Publishers-Edge

Pop Art of Debbie Richman on exhibition at Alper JCC BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ The Futernick Family Art Gallery at the Alper JCC continues to provide a rich variety of exciting exhibits featuring local and national talent. On Thursday, Feb. 26, the center hosts an opening reception for the exhibit, “Debbie Richman: Pop Art – Judaic and Secular.” Richman is a Dallas artist whose signature style is defined by bold contrasting colors, unusual perspectives and design elements that create energy and excitement. “Most of my work integrates a single three-dimensional object into the composition providing a unique depth and ‘I Spy’ conversation,” Richman explained. The artist has been influenced
strongly by the colors used in Van Gogh’s paintings, the boldness of Jasper Johns’ compositions, and the Pop Art of Andy Warhol. Richman then reinterprets traditional Jewish holiday symbols and everyday themes in a Pop Art style and creates a unique, contemporary perspective that has strong graphic elements. The work of Debbie Richman has gained national recognition and is in private collections around the United States. The exhibit is open Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., and runs from Feb. 26 to Mar. 29 at the Alper JCC on the Jay Morten-Levinthal Campus, 11155 SW 112 Ave. For more information call Suzy Breitner, director of Visual Arts, at 305271-9000, ext. 265, or visit online at <www.alperjcc.org>.

The Miami Bach Society’s award-winning Tropical Baroque Music Festival, celebrating its 10th year, will take place beginning Feb. 28 and continue through Mar. 7 in venues throughout Coral Gables. This year, the event will feature musicians from Italy, Spain, Belgium, France, Germany and the United States. It also will include post-concert receptions given by three members of Miami’s consular corps, those of Spain, Italy and Germany as well the active participation of the consuls general of France and Belgium. The Miami Bach Society recently elected retired German diplomat Dr. Volker Anding as chair of its board of directors. His enthusiastic participation in the Society’s activities has focused attention on the diplomatic importance of culture in general and music in particular. Through a mutual appreciation of beauty, both visual and aural, cultural events bind countries together even when their political goals may differ. Anding — a cellist with the Alhambra Orchestra, a member of several not-forprofit boards of directors, as well as a consultant for European and South
American business organizations — has inspired community interest in the international importance of the arts in the South Florida. His experience as former German Ambassador both to Panama and Uruguay as well as Consul General here in Miami has proven invaluable not only to the Miami Bach Society but also to the Miami-Dade community at large. The international ensembles being welcomed by Dr. Anding and the Bach Society are Fuoco e Cenere of France, Jordi Savall and Ie Concert des Nations from Spain, Italy’s Zefiro, Oltremontano of Belgium, and the Thomas Gabriel Trio from Germany. They will be joined by the Miami Bach Society’s Chamber Orchestra and Ex Umbris of New York to complete the roster. Tickets range from $5 for college and graduate students, (those students 18 and under will be admitted free of charge) to $50 for preferred seating to the Jordi Savall performance. Passes for the entire festival series also are available. For more information and to obtain tickets, visit the society’s website at <www.miamibachsociety.org> or call 305-669-1376.

Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster restyled for 2009 Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Mercedes-Benz designers, not wanting to spoil a good thing but apparently trying to improve on perfection, have given the popular SLK coupe/roadster a facelift for the 2009 model year. The SLK, with a retractable hardtop that goes up or down in just 22 seconds, has been given a re-designed front end, one with a stronger influence from the world of Formula 1 racing, and a revised rear apron that incorporates an air diffuser and unique trapezoidal exhaust pipes. In the cockpit, the SLK has newly designed chronometer-type gauges with aluminum accents, a new three-spoke steering wheel, revised climate control buttons and push-pull window controls. There are also features such as a new audio system with an in-dash six-disc CD/DVD changer and a Bluetooth interface that allows a cellular phone still in a
pocket or purse to be operated through the car’s audio system. The SLK is available with a new optional multimedia package that includes a Harmon/Kardon premium audio system, GPS navigation with a larger display, a voice control system, an SD memory card slot and a hard drive for storing music and GPS navigation maps. Forty-two percent of the SLK’s unibody is made of high-strength steel alloy and the entire body shell is zinc-coated for long-term corrosion protection. It also has a long-lasting scratch-resistant clearcoat paint job. Three models make up the 2009 SLK line, including the SLK300 powered by a 228 hp 3.0 liter V-6; the SLK350, this year with a 300 hp version of the popular 3.5-liter V-6, and the high-performance SLK55 AMG with a 355-hp V-8. Both the SLK300 and SLK350 use advanced V-6 engine technology that includes four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing. Other high-tech engine features include tumble flaps that increase gas mileage by creating more turbulence in the intake passages at part throttle. All three SLK models come with a new direct-steer system with a variable-ratio rack gearing that allows for impressive on-

center steering feel with even higher responsiveness beyond the first five degrees of steering angle. Direct steer minimizes steering during cornering and in low-speed maneuvers such as parking. The SLK350 can be ordered with a Sport package that includes AMG body styling, sport suspension, steering-wheel gearshift paddles and 18-inch AMG wheels. The Sport package includes AMG’s automatic “throttle-blipping” feature for virtually jolt-free downshifting,
which reduces load-change handling response, and for motorsports-minded drivers, improves braking before turn-in. Our test car for the week was the SLK350 (18/26 mpg) that had a base price of $49,950.
