Mayor Stanczyk: Time to stop the ugly vendettas BY GRANT MILLER

Publisher

More and more people are asking, “Mayor Stanczyk, what are you thinking?” She has a duty as mayor to put pettiness aside and work to preside over a healthy village council. Instead, she spends hours traveling downtown trying to politicize or intimidate a county DERM board proceeding that involves John Dubois, a person she is supposed to work with for the good of Palmetto Bay. Vice Mayor Dubois has been involved in proceedings before the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER). Many know because this fact was given significant play in anonymous mailers as well as the formerly anonymous blog PBChecksTheRecord during the election. Mrs. Stanczyk was recently exposed as the owner of the blog that so cowardly attacked so many people anonymously, including the prior mayor and council members. Not well played, Mrs. Stanczyk. Such behavior is so unbecoming of an elected official. What message do you and your clan

VPK online registration arrives in Miami-Dade / Monroe counties

he Village of Palmetto Bay hosted two Parks and Recreation Planning Workshops to get input from residents about future improvements and added features for the village’s parks. The first was at Coral Reef Park on Wednesday, June 5, and the second was at Palmetto Bay Park on Thursday, June 6. Both took place at 6 p.m.

The “visioning process” to determine community priorities was done through direct discussion as well as by having residents use markers on large poster boards to list things they would like to see at specific parks. While the meeting at Coral Reef Park attracted only three attendees, the one at Palmetto Bay Park the following night drew 20 people despite bad weather.

he Early Learning Coalition of MiamiDade/Monroe has announced the deployment of the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) online registration system. Online registration can be completed at <www.elcmdm.org>. Parents and caregivers no longer will have to wait in line or take time off from work to enroll their children in VPK. Registration can take place 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The process is as simple as creating a username and password on the Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe website; entering the child’s information; electronically submitting proof of Florida residency and the child’s birth certificate, and printing out the certificate of eligibility. The parent or caregiver can then enroll the child in the childcare facility of his/her choice. “The VPK online system is just one more tool that we are using to make sure that all 4-year-olds participate in the VPK program,” said Evelio Torres, president and CEO of the Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe. “Technology allows us to improve customer service and save taxpayers money at the same time. We’ve made the system as simple as possible for the parents and families of our communities hoping they will take advantage of this opportunity for their children.” The right for a child to attend VPK is in the state constitution. To register for VPK, a child must be 4 years of age by Sept. 1 and a Florida resident.

14 local officials join protest of MDX expressway toll hikes Pictured at Kendall press conference on June 17 are (l-r) State Rep. Carlos Trujillo, Cutler Bay Mayor Edward MacDougall, Roll Back Tolls cochair Carlos Garcia and State Rep. Jose Diaz.

BY RICHARD YAGER

On the eve of a newly proposed MDX toll hike, the Kendall-based “Roll Back Tolls” (RBT) campaign counted 14 city, county and state officials lined up to back the organization’s protest of new charges on Miami-Dade expressways. Letters of support have been posted on the RBT website from seven Miami-Dade legislators, five city mayors and two county commissioners, opposing a toll increase approved on June 18 by the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX). Rallying media support at a June 17 press conference, RBT co-chair Carlos Garcia introduced State Rep. Jose Felix Diaz (District 116) and State Rep. Carlos Trujillo (District 105), both of whom expressed opposition to any new tolling that may affect the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836). Joining them was Cutler Bay Mayor Edward MacDougall who said, “I’ve been part of this grassroots effort now since its earliest days, and we need more citizens involved to step up and tell the MDX ‘give us a break.’” Rep. Diaz said he would back legislation that would change MDX board representation from a fully appointed body to a partially or fully elected group.

“People who use these expressways to commute daily need to have a voice in how they are operated,” he commented. Rep. Trujillo added his support. Other state officials who have backed the RBT include State Sen. Anitere Flores, State Representatives Erik Fresen, Jeanette Nunez, Holly Raschein and Michael Bileca. County Commissioners Esteban Bovo and Xavier Suarez also have declared their opposition as well as Mayors Cindy Lerner (Pinecrest), Shelley Stanczyk (Palmetto Bay), Matti Herrera-Bower (Miami Beach) and Philip Stoddard (South Miami). While MDX action on June 18 only effected a change on SR 836 tolling, Garcia emphasized that, “We are going to keep fighting any decisions that the MDX board makes that continues charging fees for use of taxpayer-paid expressways.” The lack of “accountability” by a board that has no elected members has been one of the RBT’s prime goals for changing MDX authority since Garcia formed the organization three years ago to protest tolls on the Shula (SR 874) and Snapper Creek (SR 878) expressways which serve a large number of Kendall commuters. For more information on Roll Back Tolls, visit rollbacktolls.com or call 305-439-3835.

send to the community in driving all the way downtown — spending three, four or even five hours at a clip, excluding drive time — to sit and text from the back of a hearing room? Most would think they elected you to resolve issues like fire stations or addressing the fact that Palmetto Bay is slipping behind Pinecrest and Cutler Bay in property values, not to use your office to instead engage in personal vendettas. Are you trying to intimate that you and your clan are the political juice behind the actions of the Director (and, if so, shame on you, Director) or do you simply use your appearances at these proceedings to perpetuate the present ugliness and hostility on the Palmetto Bay Council. Stop it. The residents deserve better from their officials. The group even traveled downtown on May 8 for a mere five-minute motion hearing, but true to her form at public events, she arrived far too late to see the county lose that motion against Mr. Dubois. Who is keeping you up to date on the scheduling of these proceedings Mrs. Stanczyk? Do the county attorneys find your presence so valuable that they continue to ask you and your friends to attend?

PARKS, from page 1

After all, Mrs. Stanczyk, have you never been the subject of an ethics complaint, administrative proceeding such as traffic court, dissolution of one of your corporations, failure to pay an occupational tax, or a code compliance issue? Most would think that your presence would make your past and present activities with the county or even Palmetto Bay fair game. Maybe you live in a glass house. Why do Palmetto Bay residents continue to suffer with a mayor who fails to address ongoing issues due to indecisiveness and pending expensive litigation, such as the loss of the previously planned fire station at the USDA land; Art In Public Places pieces approved, but seeming not installed or not working properly; an unstable property tax base, and very public discontent between the council members? This behavior needs to be addressed by the council. How long should the public tolerate a mayor who walks out of meetings, fails to close important safety issues, and instead wants to intimidate and impact proceedings that involve those she should be trying to play nice with? Unbelievable.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Among the things that residents asked for in the way of improvements for Coral Reef Park were kayak/canoe rentals, motion detection lights, no additional field lights, sound proofing in the park meeting room, a better community room and better drainage in the parking areas. For Palmetto Bay Park residents asked for a community garden on the south side, a water feature for children, beach volleyball (one called for replacing the skatepark with a beach volleyball area),

features for older children to be added and perhaps additional softball fields. Fans of Perrine Wayside Dog Park suggested that a permanent “dog wash” station be added. Resolutions incorporating these and other ideas likely will be included at upcoming village council meetings in July or August. Leia Schwartz to compete in Musical Genius reality show BY GARY ALAN RUSE

Palmetto Bay resident Leia Schwartz is one of only five talented young musical artists who will be performing in an innovative new musical reality show, called Musical Genius, that begins in July. Besides being excited about being selected, she said she likes the show’s different approach. “Musical Genius is a twist on shows like American Idol and The Voice,” said Schwartz. “Instead of what they call ‘glorified karaoke’ with contestants singing other artists’ songs from genres outside of their comfort zones, Musical Genius is going to have singer/songwriters write a new original song to a different theme every week. We also have the opportunity to perform at various venues in the community and share our music.” Schwartz, who has a remarkable voice and has battled asthma much of her life, found out about the competition from her music teacher, John Rose, at Coral Reef High School. “I was one of thousands to send in an audition tape,” Schwartz said. “I then got invited to a callback, and was one of five contestants that the producers saw ‘a spark of genius’ in to be chosen to be on the show.” Unlike other shows, no one will be voted off. All the contestants will perform each week.

“The producers said that the system for deciding a winner will be different,” Schwartz said. “They said that they wanted to be more true to life, and that in real life artists don’t stand up on a stage and say ‘vote for me by calling this number.’ In real life, artists gain publicity and fans by having people follow them on social media, like Facebook and Twitter, liking, sharing and re-tweeting their posts and pictures, downloading their songs, buying tickets to their concerts and merchandise like posters and T-shirts.” On Musical Genius, the contestants will get different points for each of those categories, which will be averaged into a “GPA” (Genius Point Average) every week. Each contestant will have a “Fan Club” with a Fan Club president to help promote them. At the end of the show’s run the person with the highest GPA will be declared the winner. “I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity,” said Schwartz, who just got out of the hospital after another bout with asthma in time for her first performance. “Even if I don’t win, just the exposure and experience will be worth it. “I have already had the chance to record in Crescent Moon Studios (Emilio and Gloria Estefan’s studio), worked with professionals in the industry such as music producers and vocal instructors, been invited to sneak peaks

Musical Genius producer Chris Wills (left) meets with Leia Schwartz at Crescent Moon

of movies, and had the chance to share my music with so many people. The big thing I’m excited about is being able to share my passion for music and show others just how much music has inspired me, hopefully sharing that inspiration in the process.” Musical Genius will air in primetime on MyTV Channel 33, on Saturday nights at 8 p.m. starting July 6. The grand finale event will be a concert at the Cultural Arts Center on Aug. 3. You can support Leia by liking her

Are foreclosure victims getting their fair share?

Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH Checks earmarked for thousands of Florida foreclosure victims are finally in the process of being sent out and hundreds of millions of additional dollars more are being earmarked for new housing programs statewide. Yet there is a growing debate about where most of the money is going and if foreclosure victims are really getting their fair share. As it stands now, thousands of Florida families forced out of their homes by abusive foreclosure practices finally will be getting some money back. It is all part of a huge national settlement levied against some of the biggest banks in the country. But it turns out that most of Florida’s money isn’t going to the victims. With one of the country’s highest foreclosure rates, Florida got one of the largest cash settlements to close out a national investigation against some of the biggest banks nationwide. Some $8.4 billion in penalties was earmarked to settle allegations that thousands of Florida families were illegally thrown out of their homes by banks and mortgage companies due to faulty paperwork. Some of the money was used by the banks themselves to lower their customers’ monthly payments. Last year, the state itself got more than $200 million for its own foreclosure relief programs. But it couldn’t decide how to spend it. That fund has now grown to $334 million and the Florida mortgage relief act was just signed into law. It gives millions

of dollars to help families with down payment funds, rental assistance, homeless aid and neighborhood improvements. It also gives $73 million to the state’s general fund. State lawmakers call it a great victory for homeowners. “This money is going to help the homeless,” Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi explained. “It’s going to help housing for the elderly and disabled, and for neighborhood revitalization.” But what about Florida foreclosure victims? Under the settlement, about 72,000 former Florida homeowners should each get checks for $1,480. Still, it turns out that Florida is one of the last in the country to start distributing the foreclosure settlement funds. Critics question why it has taken so long to get the money to local families who lost their homes, and why they are not getting a bigger piece of the pie. Weston foreclosure defense attorney Roy Oppenheim said millions will be going to the courts, and will actually help speed up future foreclosures statewide “A lot of money is going to the court administrative process to speed the foreclosure process up even more… to fund the rocket dockets. It’s a complete and utter joke... for people illegally losing their home and for the destruction of the legal system.” For now, there is no word out of Tallahassee as to when all the state’s other homeowner-assistance programs will kick in or how residents can apply for the hundreds of millions of dollars that are available. Christ Fellowship Church breakfast to honor law enforcement, June 29 BY GARY ALAN RUSE

To show how much the members appreciate the service to the community provided by local police, Christ Fellowship Church (CFC) is having a Law Enforcement Appreciation Breakfast on Saturday, June 29, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Set to take place at Westminster Christian School, 6855 SW 152 St. in Palmetto Bay, this first annual event by Christ Fellowship is free to all active and retired law enforcement officers, correctional and probation officers, as well as military police. There will be special guests, a dollar raffle giveaway and other presentations. Aimee Artiles of CFC explained the background and the reason for hosting the event. “Christ Fellowship Church puts a big emphasis on serving others in our community,” Artiles said. “In fact, we have one of the highest volunteer-to-staff ratios of large churches in the country. We offer thousands of opportunities for our congregation to get involved and volunteer their time and talents to help not only the hurting and under-resourced, but to honor public servants like police officers and firefighters, as well as other professionals like nurses and teachers.” Artiles said that this particular event was the brainchild of one of the church members, Kevin Pedersen, who is a retired Special Agent. Pedersen had a personal reason for suggesting the event. “I was honored to participate in a similar event last year honoring law enforcement officers in the North Georgia area,” Pedersen said. “I saw firsthand how more than 100 officers were blessed and rewarded for their service to their community.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to thank our law enforcement officers and reward their sacrifice in a meaningful way. “With nearly 30 years of law enforcement and military service myself, I know very well the sacrifices that these men and women make on a daily basis,” Pedersen added. “A pat on the back, a good meal, some encouraging words, and some great raffle prizes are the least we can do for them.” Impressed by the event in North Georgia, Pedersen talked to the CFC Missions team about hosting a similar one in Miami-Dade. The church loved the idea and formed a committee, including MiamiDade Police Chief JD Patterson Jr., to make it happen. Christ Fellowship Church also hosts “Love Miami” twice a year, a weeklong, large scale mission where all 8,000 Christ Fellowship participants are challenged to serve the community and those in need through dozens of different volunteer opportunities. Missions Pastor Jorge Molina expressed his appreciation for area police. “We are honored to have the opportunity to thank the brave men and women in law enforcement who sacrifice so much to keep us safe,” Pastor Molina said. “At Christ Fellowship, we want our community to know God’s love not just through our words but through our actions. We take joy in working side by side with the members of communities throughout MiamiDade County. It is our privilege to take the time to demonstrate our gratitude to the officers who protect these communities. We respect them, we value them, and we support them.” Registration for the event is available online at <www.cfmiami.org/police>.

More than 1,000 job seekers attend Community Job Fair

Miami-Dade Commission Vice Chair Lynda Bell greets participants in the First Annual South Dade Community Job Fair. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY LEE STEPHENS

In an effort to bring employers and job seekers together, Miami-Dade Commission Vice Chair Lynda Bell hosted the First Annual South Dade Community Job Fair on Wednesday, June 5, at the Homestead Campus of Miami-Dade College. More than 1,000 job seekers met with over 90 prospective employers ranging from small businesses to medium and large corporations as well as state and federal agencies that are looking for just the right candidates to fill vacancies in their respective private and public sector entities. Employers included companies such as Macy’s, JP Morgan Chase, Seaboard Marine, and Disney as well as federal partners like GSA, FBI and the U.S. Secret Service. “I am delighted to have had the opportunity to host this job fair for our residents who

have been struggling so long without employment. Now that the economy is slowly improving, residents can finally get a real sense of what employers have to offer and be able to submit their resumes for consideration to these respected organizations and institutions.” Bell said. The South Dade Job Fair was conducted in partnership with the Miami-Dade College Homestead Campus, in an effort to link respected, county-wide employers with local residents. The Job Fair also offered job workshops to job seekers wanting to enhance their marketability, including: “Reinventing your Resume,” “The Ultimate Interview Review,” and, finally, “Dressing the Part.” “With the tremendous success of this year’s Job Fair, I am looking forward to hosting similar events every year to help our residents reconnect with the workforce and revitalize our local economy,” Bell added.

Summer is time for fun but also time for safety BY CINDY MAGNOLE

<cmagnole@jhsmiami.org>

It’s that time of year again — school’s out, no more homework and children have lots of free time to have fun. But during summer, with the constant outdoor play — including water activities and, of course, the hot weather — parents should be extra cautious about the hazards to their children’s safety. Here are some important safety tips that can help keep your children out of danger, and out of the emergency room. WATER SAFETY • Never leave a child alone in the water or near the water — not even for a minute to answer the telephone or check the stove. • Children should swim only with adult supervision, even if they are good swimmers. • Floatation devices and inflatable

toys are just that — TOYS. They do not replace adult supervision in the swimming pool, a kiddie pool or a bathtub. It only takes seconds for a child to drown. • If you have a backyard pool or live on the water, you need to have layers of protection to protect your children. These include: window or door locks/alarms, self-latching pool fencing, a Shepherd’s Hook or rescue ring should be available, and have a telephone nearby. Post emergency numbers and your address by a telephone. • No diving into the water — always go in feet first to protect the head and neck. • Select swimming sites that have lifeguards available. Never swim in unguarded lakes or canals because there may be many dangers lurking just beneath the water’s surface. Unseen rip currents in the ocean take too many lives. • Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Due to the time it may take for paramedics to arrive, CPR skills can make the difference between life and death. • If you see someone in trouble in the

water, remember “Throw! Don’t Go.” Do not jump in any body of water to rescue someone because they may pull you under. Throw them a rope or rescue ring. BIKE SAFETY • Always wear a helmet when bike riding. It can prevent head injuries and even death from a bicycle accident. Helmets and other safety gear also should be worn when skateboarding, skating, riding scooters and ATVs. • Stay in control, be predictable, allow only one person at a time on a bike. No towing! • Watch out for hazards such as loose gravel, potholes, broken glass and stray dogs. • Make sure your children wear bright colors when biking. Teach them that just because they see the driver, that does not mean the driver sees them. • Observe all signs, traffic lights, and street and sidewalk markings; ride single file, and use a steady front white light, a steady red rear light as well as reflectors when riding after dark.

SUN PROTECTION • The sun is strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., so try to keep your children out of direct sunlight during this time of day. • Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to all children over 6 months old and reapply it every two hours, or more if swimming. Use sunscreen even when you’re in the shade. • Children should drink plenty of fluids; they are susceptible to heat exhaustion and dehydration. BUG BITE SAFETY • Keep your children safe from bug bites by applying safe and effective insect repellents. Apply those with DEET, citronella and soybean oil to the outside of clothing and exposed skin. • Never apply the repellent directly to a child’s hands and face. Rub it into their necks and ears, staying away from their mouth and ears. • Dusk and dawn are the worst times for bugs, so stay indoors during these times or wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.

Dr. Feldman visits students at School for Advanced Studies

Miami-Dade School Board member Dr. Lawrence Feldman answers questions from students at School for Advanced Studies. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY DENNIS P. LINDSAY

Dr. Omar Monteagudo, School for Advanced Studies principal, and Dr. Jeanne Jacobs, president of Miami Dade College Homestead Campus, welcomed Miami-Dade School Board member Dr. Lawrence Feldman to their campus on Monday, May 20. School for Advanced Studies (SAS) is celebrating a 25-year partnership this year between Miami Dade College and the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and SAS recently was named by Newsweek as the “Sixth Best High School in America” in the magazine’s 2013 rankings. Dr. Feldman visited SAS classes and answered questions from the students. He also had his own questions for the SAS students. Dr. Feldman wanted to know what motivates a high school student to take on

the challenge of SAS. SAS students are able to finish their last two years of high school while they simultaneously complete the first two years of college (all for free). The school is known for academic excellence and a rigorous curriculum that requires a lot of hard work and dedication. The school attracts academically talented students who are not intimidated by such a challenge. Ninety percent of the SAS Class of 2013 received an Associate in Arts degree from Miami Dade College a month before their high school graduation and most of the graduating class was accepted at top tier universities all around the United States. Visit the SAS website at <www.sas.dadeschools.net> to learn more about application meetings that will be held in the fall for the SAS Class of 2016 (current 10th graders).

Gulliver’s Eco-Cooker team wins Spirit of Innovation Challenge BY DONNA VAN DER DIJS

Gulliver Preparatory School’s engineering team has been selected as one of four national 2013 Conrad Foundation Spirit of Innovation Challenge winners. Each winning team received an innovation grant of $10,000 to continue product development and a one-year affiliate membership to Sigma Xi, the scientific research society. Gulliver’s engineering team won in the challenge’s Energy and Environment category with its Eco-Cooker. The project was inspired by Garandia, a poor village outside

The Eco-Cooker –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

of Yola, Nigeria, where excessive woodburning cooking has led to deforestation. Garandians have no access to alternative sources for fuel such as gas and electricity. The Eco-Cooker allows for safe and effective cooking without the need for firewood. It uses cattle dung, which is rich in methane, to produce biogas as a clean fuel source for heating and cooking. Because most Garandians make a living as cattle herders, there’s plenty of animal waste around the village. The portable cook stove is easy to use and maintain, will help manage the animal waste and contains an expandable biogas production system. “It’s an incredible honor for our students to be recognized by the Conrad Foundation for the second year in a row,” said John Krutulis, Gulliver’s director and head of schools. “We are proud of our students and their coach, Claude Charron.” The Conrad Foundation’s Spirit of Innovation Challenge celebrates the life and entrepreneurial spirit of astronaut Pete Conrad, the third man to walk on the Moon. Presented by Lockheed Martin and Battelle, the annual program is a multiphase business and technical plan competition, which is free and open to students ages 13-18 from around the world.

Over seven months, students use science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills along with creativity, collaboration and entrepreneurship to develop innovative products and services in one of four categories: Aerospace and Aviation, Cybertechnology and Security, Energy and Environment or Health and Nutrition. This year, 20 finalist teams were selected from a pool of more than 230 entries from 44 countries and throughout the United States. The finalists attended the 2013 Innovation Summit at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, located in Houston, TX, April 10-13. Two Gulliver teams were among the finalists: the winning Eco-Cooker team and a biomedical team, MedEasy, which advanced in the Health and Nutrition category with the Pill-Minder, an automatic pill dispenser with an alarm system

designed to remind people to take their medicine on time and at the right dosage. Claude Charron, coach of the 2013 EcoCooker team and 2012 Team Gulliver International, was named Nancy Conrad Teacher of the Year at the Innovation Summit. He received the honor for excellence in education and for being an outstanding advocate for the program. Charron is Gulliver Prep’s Engineering and Biomedical Sciences Department chair. In addition to a cash award, Gulliver will display, for one year, a custom-designed bronze trophy by sculptor Erik Lindbergh, grandson of famous aviator Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh. Glutathione Needed to Eliminate Toxins Glutathione is an antioxidant produced naturally in the human body, that is composed of 3 amino acids - cysteine, glycine and glutamine. Glutathione helps to detoxify free radicals that can cause serious illness, but poor diet, pollution, toxins, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections and radiation all deplete glutathione. According to Mark Hyman, MD, glutathione deficiency is common in very ill patients, including people with chronic fatigue syndrome, heart disease, cancer, chronic infections, autoimmune disease, diabetes, autism, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, arthritis, asthma, kidney problems, and liver disease. According to S. Jill James, PhD of the Arkansas Children Research Institute, levels and quality of the glutathione are much lower in autistic children versus typical children. Ask our pharmacist how to improve your glutathione levels and if this therapy is appropriate for you.

Ygrene Energy Fund Florida, the leading provider of property assessed clean energy (PACE) programs for local governments in Florida, recently announced it has funded the first PACE projects in the state. This is a major milestone for Florida and signifies a new era of property improvement and job creation opportunities for cities and counties across the state. The Ygrene program provides residential and commercial property owners with access to low-cost, low-risk capital to implement building upgrades, including hurricane protection, energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. Whereas traditional retrofits can burden property owners with high upfront costs and financial risks, Ygrene’s PACE-financed upgrades are nonrecourse financing repaid via annual property assessments over a 20-year term. In Miami, the Ygrene program has funded its first hurricane resiliency project on a commercial property owned by urban development company Barlington Group, which worked with New Holland PACE Consulting Inc. on the project. A second project is approved and underway. Both properties will receive hurricane resiliency upgrades — including impact-resistant and energy efficient storefronts, windows, and doors — expected to reduce the building owners’ hurricane insurance and energy costs while simultaneously improving the value of each property. These projects total more than $210,000, part of Ygrene’s growing pipeline of over $40 million in PACE-related projects in the region. “Ygrene’s comprehensive PACE program offered us the unique opportunity to enhance our properties without diverting resources away from core operations,” said Martin Pinilla, founder of Barlington Group. “We’ve been consistently impressed with Ygrene’s Florida team, including their work to connect us with nearby contractors to ensure our upgrades are not only being completed by trained professionals, but also creating local jobs in the process.” “This is a breakthrough event for the state of Florida and the nation — one that demonstrates the path toward economic revitalization and reduced energy consump-

tion,” said Stacey Lawson, CEO of Ygrene. “Florida governments and property owners will see immediate and lasting results through the PACE program, and Ygrene is the first administrator in the state to demonstrate the viability of this model.” Ygrene has multiple programs under development across Florida. The company’s first Southeast Florida program, Clean Energy Green Corridor, is a partnership with the cities of Miami, Coral Gables, Cutler Bay, Miami Shores, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest and South Miami. For the Green Corridor program, Ygrene already has trained and certified more than 200 local contractors to administer upgrades and provide job opportunities throughout the region. For more information, visit online at <CleanEnergyGreenCorridor.com>. Additional municipalities are evaluating Ygrene’s PACE programs. Three more cities in Miami-Dade County now have partnered with Ygrene to begin establishing two new PACE districts, and most recently, Leon and Lee counties ranked Ygrene as the No. 1 firm in each county’s competitive process to select a PACE program administrator. “With all the promises of PACE over the past few years, it’s exciting to see the first projects come to life,” said Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado. “The PACE program has the potential to address three critical needs in our state: hurricane protection, job creation and rising energy costs. The doors are finally opening on this huge opportunity, and I commend Ygrene and the cities involved in this endeavor for their commitment and vision to enact meaningful change in our communities.” Ygrene Energy Fund is the leading developer and administrator of clean energy financing programs throughout the United States. Ygrene’s fully funded Clean Energy Programs provide privately funded and immediately accessible financing for wind hardening, renewable and energy efficiency upgrades to both residential and commercial property owners at no upfront costs. During the next five years, Ygrene’s Clean Energy Districts are projected to create tens of thousands of local jobs and invest hundreds of millions into local economies. Learn more at ygrene.us.

UM 2013 Champ of AAF National UM Sports Hall of Fame Celebrity Student Advertising Competition Dolphin Tournament, June 28-29

BY LEE STEPHENS

For 40 years corporate sponsors have turned to the collegiate members of the American Advertising Federation for fresh ideas and insight on today’s consumers. Through the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC), the premier student advertising competition in the nation, students from across the country have been challenged to think critically and develop high-level integrated marketing campaigns for some of the country’s most recognizable brands. The American Advertising Federation’s (AAF) University of Miami college chapter has been selected once again as the national champion in the 2013 NSAC. Glidden, the 2013 NSAC sponsor, challenged AAF college chapter members to develop an integrated and multi-platform marketing effort for three different customer segments — DIY renters, current Walmart paint shoppers and DIYers who shop Walmart Home products but do not currently purchase paint. University of Miami was one of 18 teams to advance to the finals in Phoenix

and present their campaign to Glidden’s senior marketing executives: Rob Horton, marketing director, PPG Architectural Coatings; Nestor Hernandez, director, Walmart North America, PPG Architectural Coatings, and Jennifer Ginnetti, Glidden brand manager, PPG Architectural Coatings. “The quality and depth of work that all the students demonstrated both at Nationals and across all 144 participating schools speaks volumes for the talent, creativity and energy that the future generation of marketers possess,” said Eric Stasiowski, director of communications for PPG Architectural Coatings, parent company of NSAC national sponsor Glidden paint. “What we saw were well-thought-out plans backed by insight and strategic thought which ultimately yielded some very real implementable ideas,” he added. University of Miami also was awarded a $1,000 grant from Ad-ology for best use of market research. Miami Children’s Hospital launches free interactive smartphone app BY JENNIFER CAMINAS

Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH) is the first hospital in the country to launch a smartphone app for Apple iOS devices that uses Wi-Fi triangulation technology to offer patients the convenience of an on-campus indoor GPS-like way-finding system, along with other service enhancements. Through the Fit4KidsCare app, families now can connect to MCH’s interactive way-finding campus maps, purchase items from the MCH gift shop, order room service and much more. The app originally was launched in 2010, initially providing families with ER and Urgent Care wait times, directions to the main hospital and its nine outpatient center locations as well as physician directories. In 2013, the hospital updated its app using mobile-software company Meridian’s software development kits for navigation and indoor positioning. Additionally, the hospital also used Cisco’s 802.11n Wi-Fi network and the Mobility Services Engine for computing location information in real time from hundreds of Wi-Fi access points, exposing them centrally to third party software platforms like Meridian. “Miami Children’s Hospital is committed to optimizing the patient and family

experience,” said Ed Martinez, chief information officer. “The new app is one of many tools for supporting families in navigating the campus. It supplements a colorful, child-friendly interior way-finding system that uses colors and animal images as visual cues as well as staff commitment to proactive way-finding support. “In our increasingly technically connected world, the new app adds a new dimension to the process,” he said. Once downloaded, the app’s new, indoor, way-finding feature provides smartphone users with an internal view of the main hospital’s layout. Using indoor positioning, it locates the users on the smart phone and provides step-by-step directions to any desired location within the hospital, similar to a GPS guidance system. The technology is an enhancement to MCH’s dedication to excellence in customer service. The application offers inpatients and their families the ability to order room service from the hospital cafeteria and order gift shop items straight from a mobile device. Families and friends also can send gifts or cards to patients admitted to the hospital by downloading the app. To download the app, visit the iTunes app store from your mobile device and search for Fit4KidsCare. For more information on the Fit4KidsCare app visit online at <www.mch.com/Fit4Kids>.

FNBSM serves the community with stability and originality BY CAROLINA WILSON

Residing on the same familiar corner since 1952, First National Bank of South Miami (FNBSM) continues serving the community of South Miami with stability and originality. Executive vice president Veronica Flores believes that this consistency makes the bank unique. “We’ve had the same ownership and have been in the same corner [5750 Sunset Dr.] for 60 years. In terms of banking that’s quite unusual, especially in South Florida,” Flores said. The bank’s consistent location and ownership parallels its desire to provide consistent service. Flores shares that FNBSM is not merely a “transactional bank.” “We do not just want to do one transaction for you. We want to do your loans, your deposit accounts, your children’s loans, and your youth savings accounts,” Flores said. FNBSM prides itself in sustaining generations of customers. Flores said that some of the bank’s clients have banked there since the 1950s. Additionally, although the bank is one of the first community banks of South Florida, it seeks to fight the reputation of being simply old-fashioned. “We have had the reputation of just being

your father’s and grandfather’s bank and of not knowing much about technology,” Flores said. “But we are the first community bank here to have a YouTube channel.” Additionally, Flores shares that the bank has all “the bells and whistles” of high-tech service including mobile banking as well as an iPhone and Android app. “One of the things that we are coming up with this summer is the ability to take a picture of your deposit with your phone and send it in,” Flores said. “We are also launching bank-to-bank transfers soon.” Another unique aspect of FNBSM is the bank’s desire to encourage and support the personalities of its employees. “We encourage and embrace for all of our officers to have their personalities show through their work. Most banks work in a more corporate environment, where you have to be very sterile and scripted,” Flores said. “Here, we give our officers a lot more autonomy. If you go into any of our officer’s

work areas, you’ll see their interests shine through, whether that be pictures of horses or a collection of clocks.” In addition to personable employees, FNBSM has an involved history of commitment to the South Miami community. “We were the first bank to have a registered art gallery within the bank. We don’t charge any fees,” Flores said. “The first Friday of every month we feature different local artists, giving them an opportunity to show their work in a beautiful setting.” FNBSM is so devoted to the community that last year the bank gave as much in donations and sponsorships as they made in net profit for the bank. “We gave about $125,000 last year, whether it be to local businesses, Fellowship House, South Miami Hospital or the University of Miami,” Flores said. “No one else does it, but it’s the right thing to do.” ––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Pictured in front of the bank in its South Miami location are (l-r) president and director Drew Dammeier, executive vice president Veronica Flores and board chair Bruce MacArthur.

the Fiat brand for the third consecutive time,” said Jason Stoicevich, head of Fiat Brand North America. “The Fiat 500 Abarth is the most affordable and fuel-efficient highperformance car in America, and now the Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio gives you a front-row seat to better hear the raspy signature sound of the Abarth-tuned dual exhausts.” A total of 14 manufacturers participated in the third annual “Topless in Miami” event, designed to showcase the best convertible automobiles on sale in the United States today. The participating manufacturers included Mercedes Benz, Nissan, Infiniti, Jaguar, Porsche, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Jeep, Audi, Mazda, Fiat, Smart and Volkswagen.

Automotive Editor The Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet claimed the overall Best Convertible automobile title on June 6 at the third annual “Topless in Miami” event hosted by the Southern Automotive Media Association (SAMA), headquartered at the elegant RitzCarleton Hotel in Key Biscayne. The Porsche Carrera was contested closely in the category by the beautiful Jaguar XKR. However, the Jaguar XKR went on to win the title of Best Exotic Convertible in the voting by 72 SAMA members who drove and graded the 17 participating vehicles on design, ease of convertible operation, and overall driving and handling characteristics. “We’re really pleased with how the manufacturers supported this event and how our members have responded,” said Paul Borden, SAMA board member and event coordinator. “This was our third year and it really was the best yet, with 14 auto manufacturers entering 17 convertibles in the event. And we had a great turnout by our members; more than 70 of them signed in and drove and graded the cars.” It was the second year in a row that the sleek Jaguar XKR has won a trophy in the “Topless in Miami” competition. The Porsche Carrera and Mercedes Benz SLS AMG GT Roadster were the two other entrants in the Exotic Convertible category. At the same time, the BMW M3 Convertible won the trophy in the 2013 Best Luxury Convertible class. It was challenged closely by the Audi A5, the Infiniti G37 IPL and the Mercedes Benz E-Class convertibles. In the Full-Size Convertible Class, the Chrysler 200 Limited won top honors. It was closely followed in the balloting by the BMW 135is and the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4x4. “We are truly honored that the members of SAMA have chosen the Chrysler 200 Convertible as the ‘Best Full-size Convertible’ at the third annual ‘Topless in Miam’ event,” said Saad Chehab, president

In the Small Convertible category, the Fiat 500 once again found favor with SAMA voters as they judged the little Italian car the best for the third consecutive year, the Abarth Cabrio model winning the trophy this year. BMW adds hybrid model to popular 3 Series Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS BMW has added a long-awaited hybrid model to the popular BMW3 Series sport sedan lineup. The design of the new model — ActiveHybrid 3 — is typical BMW, with the hint of a wedge shape underlining the sporty character. The silhouette even reflects the sedan’s balance and the even distribution of weight between the front and rear wheels, while the extra flaring around the rear wheel arches denotes the rear wheel drive. But it’s the hybrid technology that makes this car stand out. The ActiveHybrid 3 blends BMW’s responsive TwinPower Turbo 3.0liter inline 6-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with an electric motor powered by a high-voltage battery. Together the inline 6 and electric motor combine for 335 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain sends combined power to the rear wheels.

The ActiveHybrid 3 is the second hybrid BMW model — after the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 — to use an inline 6-cylinder engine. The engine has won the international “Engine of the Year” award two years in a row. The six-cylinder powerplant’s TwinPower Turbo technology uses a twinscroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection and variable valve timing. It all serves to improve response and rev ability, as well as refinement and efficiency, while an aluminum crankcase helps reduce weight. The ActiveHybrid 3’s electric motor is impressive. It develops a maximum 55 hp and supports all-electric operation around town. It also helps deliver instant acceleration without any lag time and, like all electric motors, develops full torque from a standing start. The motor can drive the sedan emissions free for speeds up to 45 mph for 2.5 miles. The motor is compactly located in the automatic transmission housing and connected to the transmission by a clutch, its operating temperature controlled by the engine cooling system. The motor is powered by a 96-cell lithium-ion high-voltage battery housed under the trunk between the wheels. The battery, developed specifically for the ActiveHybrid 3, is encased in a special high-strength

Sporty BMW ActiveHybrid 3 has hint of a wedge shape, extra flaring around rear wheel arches and a tight kink style line at the base of the C-pillar. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

housing positioned between the wheel arches in the trunk and is uniquely cooled by a system integrated into the car’s air conditioning cooling circuit. The design and location of the battery provides optimal protection for it and helps ensure a well-balanced weight distribution. The internal combustion engine is only started when the driver requires more power; it is then engaged automatically. Its performance can be boosted by the electric motor to provide extra power when acceler-

ating. Under combined ICE/electric power, the ActiveHybrid 3 delivers a 0-60 clocking of 5.3 seconds and a governed top speed of 155 mph. The BMW ActiveHybrid 3 has an MSRP of $50,195.
