he Relay for Life will take place on Mar. 13-14, at the Miami Children’s Hospital Palmetto Bay Center, 17615 SW 97 Ave. (Franjo Road). The Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity, as it encompasses the wide variety of programs and services the organization has to offer. Local businesses, clubs, families, friends, hospitals, schools and service organizations form relay teams. A member of each team is always out on the track walking, jogging or running, while other members camp out along the track and enjoy entertainment, activities and camaraderie. Unstoppable momentum brings Relay For Life to new heights each year. Annually, 250,000 new participants join the millions who are involved already as Relay events bring
them together around the common goal of fighting cancer. Volunteer committees working in local communities lead thousands of events nationwide, each one with its own local flavor. Each year, more than 1.4 million people in the United States find out that they have cancer and an estimated 559,000 Americans will die of the disease. By becoming a sponsor, volunteer or starting a team of an American Cancer Society Relay For Life event, you are helping to find cures for cancer and reduce the cancer burden in our community. People will see and know your company as an organization committed to the well being of your customers and employees. The success that the American Cancer Society has achieved to date has been the result of an effective volunteer-staff partnership. Should you wish to learn more about the experience, visit the American Cancer Society’s website at <www.cancer.org> or <www.relayforlife.org/palmettobayfl>.
iami-Dade Commissioner Katy Sorenson announced on Thursday, Feb. 4, that she will not seek re-election to the Miami-Dade County Commission. “I have been honored and privileged to represent the residents of District 8 for almost 16 years. I’ve worked hard and done my best to serve them and all of Miami-Dade County. Politics is still very much in my blood. I’m looking forward to continuing my work for the good of our community in another way.” Commissioner Sorenson announced that she will be collaborating with the University of Miami to develop a community initiative on “Excellence in Public Service” that will foster leadership among people aspiring to run for public office at the state and local levels. This initiative, with the support of the Knight Foundation and the Dade Community Foundation, also is envisioned to KATY SORENSON become a resource for those already in office as well as civic-minded individuals who want to participate more fully. Community comes together to help boy battling cancer BY NANCY EAGLETON
S. Peter Capua, Tatjana Surev, and Gil and Carmen Capa were joined by good friends who came together on Jan. 31 at Gil Capa’s Bistro, located in the Sable Chase community of Kendall, for an evening to honor and benefit 10-year-old Joseph Mosca who is battling brain cancer. The evening featured beautiful classical music performed by Capua and Surev, a delicious Italian dinner prepared by the Capas and much love. “We had 55 people attend the event,” Capua said. “We were all there out of love for this special boy and his wonderful family.” Joseph, who lives in Homestead and is a student at Keys Gate Charter School, attended the event with his parents, Joseph and Manilla Mosca, and his grandparents, Aurora and Vinicio Galli, all dear friends of Capua. To show their love, Capua and Surev began the evening with The Hymn of Love and continued to play several classical arrangements. “Joseph is such a gracious child,” Capua said. “It was a very moving and sentimental evening.”
Joining together to raise money for the Joseph Mosca family are (l-r) Carmen and Gil Capa, Tatjana Surev and S. Peter Capua.
Capua is an attorney, former judge, longtime South Miami resident and musician at heart. When he plays the clarinet, he is accompanied by Surev on the piano, and together they have been enchanting audiences for more than 18 years. Surev is the music teacher at St. Agnes Academy in Key Biscayne, has a doctorate in Music from the University of Miami and was a child prodigy in Belgrade, according to Capua. The Capa’s have been delighting patrons with their homemade Italian cuisine at Gil Capa’s Bistro, 10712 SW 113 Pl., for more than 16 years. The evening included a traditional Italian dinner all painstakingly prepared by Capua, who was honored to host the benefit at his restaurant. “It was a wonderful evening,” said Aurora Galli, Joseph’s grandmother. “It was like family coming together and it was very emotional for all of us.” To make a contribution to assist the Joseph Mosca family, send a check addressed to the Benefit Account for Joseph Christopher Mosca, The First State Bank of Key West, 1201 Simonton St., Key West, FL 33040.

develop ways UM students can benefit from the initiative. “There are so many talented citizens in this community who would be willing to serve in elected office,” Commissioner Sorenson said. “What they need is a place to learn the mechanics of how government and the legislative process operate, ways to navigate the political environment and how to serve their community with the knowledge, ethics and professionalism to be effective leaders. This initiative will be an interdisciplinary effort and draw upon the expertise and involvement of local community leaders.” Commissioner Sorenson, who has represented southern Miami-Dade County since 1994, has been an outspoken advocate for her community and all of Miami-Dade County. Commissioner Sorenson’s District encompasses more than 170,000 residents of diverse backgrounds, includes four municipalities and a significant portion of the agricultural lands of the county. She has worked diligently to enhance the quality of life for south MiamiDade through wise economic and growth management policies, crime prevention initiatives and protection of the region’s environmental resources. Commissioner Sorenson can claim a number of legislative victories over the years. She championed the inclusion of “sexual orientation” in the county’s anti-discrimination laws and successfully defended these equal treatment provisions against attempts at repeal. She successfully defeated a plan to convert the Homestead Air Reserve Base into a commercial airport that would have had a negative impact on Everglades and Biscayne national parks. She fought to save the Miami Circle, which is now a public asset and has been awarded the status of National Historic Landmark. Commissioner Sorenson sponsored a special bond for improving county parks. She has been
a staunch advocate for human rights, a champion of regional cooperation, a leader in child welfare issues and a promoter of the arts. She has been a stalwart defender of the county’s Urban Development Boundary and has continued to fight to hold the line against sprawl. “I’m proud of what I have been able to accomplish over the years. With the grassroots support of the citizens, we’ve fought discrimination, kept our national parks safe from the threats of development and worked to make Miami-Dade County a sustainable community of lasting value.” Commissioner Sorenson chairs the Budget, Planning and Sustainability Committee, and she serves on the Housing and Community Development Committee; the Transit, Infrastructure and Roads Committee, and the Recreation, Culture and Tourism Committee. She served as vice chair of the county commission from 2002 to 2004. She serves as treasurer of the South Florida Regional Planning Council and is past chair of the Regional Transportation Organization. Commissioner Sorenson has served as a member of the Mayor’s Mental Health Task Force, the Mayor’s Mortgage Fraud Task Force and currently chairs the Mayor’s Sustainability Task Force. She is on the board of directors of the Florida Association of Counties. In 2004, she was selected to attend Harvard University’s Senior Executive Program in State and Local Government. She holds a master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin. Prior to serving as a county commissioner, she was the executive director of the California Women Lawyers Bar Association and a legislative aide to Illinois State Senator Dawn Clark Netsch. She also worked as a political consultant. Katy Sorenson has been married since 1978 to Janis Dzelzkalns, MD, and they have two adult children.

State improves South M-Path Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR
AROUND TOWN With bikers concerned about the Key Biscayne bridge accident, at least one continuing hazard in the southwest area is being fixed. We’ve written about dangers bike riders face when following the designated “MPath” under Metrorail from its downtown northern starting point at the Miami River south to SW 67th Avenue — things like abrupt intersection endings and curbing that blocks bikers at major street crossings. Such interruptions leave little protection for joggers, pedestrians and bikers alike. The suburban-to-downtown bike-pedestrian path under Metrorail extended the south terminus from SW 67th Avenue to a point near Dadeland Mall, requiring a protected crossing at one of this area’s most traffic-crowded corridor intersections. A report from Spokes ‘n Folks, South Florida’s biking newsletter, discloses that the Stt a t e D e p a rtment of Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n recently decided to close the “Dadeland Gap,” constructing the last 1.2 miles of MPath near D ade l and Ma ll, north to SW 67th. When the “Gap” is closed, the northern M-Path will connect with the South Dade Trail, providing a continuous off-road route from Downtown Miami to Florida City, even tho’ bumps-in-the-road still exist in many spots, north of SW 67th Avenue.. To stay abreast of local biking news, log on to “Spokes ‘n Folks,” a timely eye on goings-on that impact s bikers, motorists and pedestrians throughout our neck of the woods! Supreme Court decision alters political campaigning R. Kenneth Bluh –– VIEWPOINT –– KENNETH’S COMMENTARY You think the “Swift Boat” campaign in 2004 was over the top when it comes to “dirty” political fighting? Just wait until you see what is going to take place during upcoming elections. Thanks to the recent United States Supreme Court ruling, corporations and unions now are protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution and are permitted to speak by spending as much money as they wish in the support of or the defeat of an issue or a candidate. The court ruled that, “Speech is an essential mechanism of democracy, for it is the means to hold officials accountable to the people,” wrote Justice Anthony Kennedy for the majority, striking down federal laws barring corporations and unions from spending money to convince voters to support or oppose specific candidates. The justice said there is no reason to
believe that the constitutional right to free speech should be limited to “human beings,” as opposed to associations of humans, which includes corporations [and unions]. Sen. John McCain said the McCainFeingold law governing spending by corporations and unions is dead. McCain predicts a voter backlash once citizens realize the extent of the court’s ruling. Corporations and unions will make the individual citizen’s financial contribution to campaigns of little consequence. Now, unions and corporations can spend billions as they wish in presidential and congressional races. A conservative legal foundation, the James Madison Center for Free Speech, already has asked the Federal Election Commission to formally throw out its rules that restrict corporate and union spending on politics, saying that the step is needed to implement the court’s decision. Interestingly, at this point it appears foreign corporations will have the same rights as American corporations. Picture this: Toyota, a Japanese corporation, knows that the congressional bailout of General Motors and Chrysler was detrimental to Toyota’s domination of the U.S. auto mar-
ket. Toyota invests billions of yen in support of congressional candidates that are against possible future bailouts of the U.S. auto industry. If successful, Toyota could effectively kill auto manufacturing in the U.S. and give the “full” U.S. market to foreign made automobiles. The court ruling does not permit corporations and unions to contribute directly to an individual presidential or congressional candidate’s campaign funds. What is does permit is corporations and unions to spend as much as they wish on their own corporate or union campaigns, independent of the candidates. The only major restriction is that the campaign materials must disclose who is footing the bill. How will stockholders of public corporations react to management’s spending dollars in support of a candidate or pending legislation? After all, the purpose of a forprofit corporation is to make a profit, not to spend stockholder equity in political races, notwithstanding the fact that the outcome
of the spending “might” result in more profits that could eventually end up in the hands of stockholders. Future political campaigns will take on an entirely different look. The airwaves, television, the press, billboards, and what shows up in our mailboxes will be dominated by political advertisements that will numb the senses. It will be impossible to get away from politicking for months going into an election cycle. Now it is up to Congress to decide if new legislation can and should be crafted to bring the nation back into the McCainFeingold era of political sanity. Toyota takes unusual turn with wide recall Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY It’s happening around South Florida and all over the country. Some of the most popular Toyota cars and trucks are being pulled off showroom floors and taken off the market. There have been numerous complaints that some accelerator pedals can get stuck and prevent the vehicle from slowing down. A total of 2.3 million Toyotas — most of them built between 2009 and 2010 — are being recalled. But some earlier models are on the list too. At West Dade’s Toyota of South Florida, Manager Leo Perez said the recall will hurt his business. ‘There’s no doubt about it — it’s rough not being able to sell some of our core products,” Perez said. Nevertheless, he said he still has plenty of other non-recalled Toyota products to sell. He also has been busy answering questions from concerned customers like Fernando Campo who has a recalled 2009 Camry. Still, Campo said he isn’t worried about driving it. “It is on the recall list,” he explains. “But I like Toyota and they’re taking care of their customers.” And his Camry? Campo said he believes it’s fine. Toyota’s recall includes its most popular vehicles, among them, some Camrys, Tundras and Rav-4s. Here is Toyota’s Official List: 2009-10 RAV4, 2009-10
Corolla, 2009-10 Matrix, 2005-10 Avalon, Certain 2007-10 Camry, 2010 Highlander except hybrid models, 2007-10 Tundra, and 2008-10 Sequoia. In fact, there have been dozens of reports of stuck Toyota accelerator pedals for several years. The problem has reportedly caused several accidents and deaths. Toyota believes the stuck pedals come from some U.S.-made accelerator assemblies. Local dealers say customers should not check accelerator pedals themselves, but bring them back to their Toyota mechanics as soon as possible. “Customers cannot know on their own if they have a bad pedal or not,” Perez warned. “They need to come into their dealers to have them checked out. That’s what we’re here for, so you can bring your vehicles back to your dealers.” It is good advice then to suggest that if you have one of the recalled Toyota cars or trucks, have it checked as soon as possible to make sure it’s safe to drive. Remember, the problem won’t be fixed by just removing the floor mats, like Toyota first advised. If your accelerator sticks and won’t slow down, shift into neutral, carefully apply your brakes and get to the side of the road as safely as possible. For more information, consumers are urged to contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or the NHTSA hotline at 1-888-327-4236. Throughout 2009, Assurant associates from the Miami campus in south MiamiDade helped feed the needy at the Farm Share facility in Homestead. Several teams spent days volunteering at Farm Share packing, sorting and distributing food to needy families in the community. During the course of a year, Assurant associates packed and sorted over 123 large bins of food and helped to feed approximately 3,600 families. “Our employees really feel a strong connection with Farm Share in helping others, as well as a rewarding and fulfilling experience for themselves” said Debbie

Cupcakes Changing the World at Coconut Grove Arts Festival BY ANGELA YOUNG
Visitors at this year’s Coconut Grove Arts Festival will have a tasty opportunity to satisfy more than just their hunger. By purchasing a treat from Cupcakes Changing the World, they’ll be contributing directly to a pioneering local charity: SHAPE, Students Changing the World. SHAPE is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that teaches philanthropy to high school students. A significant portion of their funding comes from Cupcakes Changing the World, an enterprise founded specifically to generate revenue that keeps the organization’s essential programs going. All of the profits generated by Cupcakes Changing the World support SHAPE in its mission to engage and empower students through philanthropic activities, leadership opportunities, civic engagement and career development. More than 1,000 students at 25 South Florida high schools take part in SHAPE’s programs, learning the principles and practice of charitable giving. Everyone who participates makes a grant to a local charity, the first gesture in what the organization hopes will become a lifetime of benevolence, compassion, generosity and community involvement. “We’re very excited to be taking part in the Coconut Grove Arts Festival,” said Mark J. Gordon, local entrepreneur and president of SHAPE. “It’s not just the premier art show in our region; it was named the top show in the country by Sunshine Artist magazine. That makes it an unbeatable opportunity to reach hundreds of thousands of people with a message about how much our organization is accomplishing right here in South Florida. And what’s best of all is that we get to do it with some-
thing everybody loves: cupcakes.” Guests at the festival should look for the group’s Cupcake Cruiser, a mobile pastry delivery system outfitted with state-of-theart audio-video equipment, including a 50inch outdoor flat screen television that will be broadcasting information about SHAPE’s activities as well as ads from local partner businesses.
All of the profits generated by Cupcakes Changing the World support SHAPE in its mission to engage and empower students through philanthropic activities, leadership opportunities, civic engagement and career development. The Cruiser’s menu includes cupcakes in six flavors — chocolate fudge, strawberry swirl, red velvet, coconut dream, lemon twist and vanilla marshmallow. They are all freshly baked right here in South Florida, and they’re all available for $3 each. More information about SHAPE is available online at <www.Shape Students.org>; details about Cupcakes Changing the World can be found at <www.ChangingTheWorld.org> and information on the Coconut Grove Arts Festival is accessible at <www.Coconut GroveArtsFest.com>. The festival runs Feb. 13-15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and admission is $10; children 12 and under free.

Facing foreclosure? Is bankruptcy an option for you? BY DANIA S. FERNANDEZ, ESQ., Attorney at Law Bankruptcy is a perfectly legitimate way to stop foreclosures and repossessions, put an end to lawsuits, protect paychecks from garnishments and regain control of your life. When filing for bankruptcy, it must be filed correctly in order to for it be successful. It is important to consult a bankruptcy attorney or debt relief lawyer in your area to ensure that you fully understand your options regarding bankruptcy and whether this is the best decision for your financial future. Personal bankruptcy is filed either as a Chapter 7 or a Chapter 13: Chapter 7—Liquidation—wipes out most of your debts and in return, you may have to give up some of your property. If you are considering a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and you are behind in your mortgage, make certain that you first reach a loan modification/loan workout or refinance with your lender. In the Chapter 7 Bankruptcy there will not be a loan modification option of your existing mortgage and, therefore, if you stop paying your mortgage you could lose your home. Your homestead is exempt. However, it can be foreclosed on if you do not pay. Chapter 13–Reorganization— enables you to pay off all or a portion of your debts during a three to five year period, yet does not require you to give up any of your assets to pay creditors. As long as you keep making payments, creditors will not bother you for payment or continue the foreclosure against your property. In the Chapter 13 Bankruptcy you can save your house. The following is a list of facts you should know about filing bankruptcy:
• Bankruptcy is a matter of public record. • A credit counseling course and financial management course are required. • Creditors will be prohibited from contacting you concerning your debt. • Florida law will exempt certain assets. • You may suffer some discrimination in future employment opportunities. • A stigma may still be attached to filing bankruptcy. • A record of filing for bankruptcy may remain on your credit profile for up to 10 years. • By eliminating your debt in Chapter 7 or making payments in a Chapter 13, you will immediately improve your credit score. In the midst of an economic crisis, please try not to forget the importance of life and your priorities. I have clients who are falling apart not only financially, but also emotionally and physically. Saving your home is not the only solution. A job is needed that can pay for the revised monthly payment. Activities to stimulate good health and family events to create memorable moments with children, family and friends are a must. Take all the necessary steps to preserve what is important to you by taking advantage all of your options. There are options available for you. And, more continue to come with evolving federal and state laws. Know your rights and know your options. Call an attorney today to guide you towards stabilizing your life.

Reading is the most powerful skill a child can learn, as it influences success in school and improves the overall quality of life. That is why malls across the state of Florida owned by Simon Property Group, will promote the importance of reading and collect new and gently used books at each mall’s “Kidgits Book Blast” event that will take place locally on the following dates: The Falls — Saturday, Feb. 13, 2-4 p.m.; Miami International Mall — Saturday, Feb. 13, 2-4 p.m., and Dadeland Mall — Friday, Feb. 19, 6:30-8 p.m. Simon Kidgits Club’s “Book Blast” events welcome children of all ages to celebrate the joys of reading. Engaging activities and giveaways will bring to life children’s stories and help celebrate books and the importance of reading. A two-week book drive will commence at each mall’s “Kidgits Book Blast.” Families are encouraged to donate new and gently used books at each of the participating mall’s Guest Services Desks for two weeks after the “Kidgits Book Blast” events. The books will support the goals of the Florida Department of Education’s “Just Read, Florida!” initiative and will be distributed to programs and schools in the vicinity of the participating mall through donations to the Florida Education Foundation. “Simon Property Group is proud to partner with the Florida Department of Education’s Just Read, Florida! office to encourage and promote reading,” said Lynnette Lauria, portfolio vice president of
marketing for Florida, Simon Property Group. “We recognize the importance of reading and are thrilled that our malls will serve as a venue to drop off books, as we continue to look for ways to encourage children to share the joy of reading with others,” she added. Just Read, Florida! is a statewide reading initiative that prioritizes reading in Florida’s public schools and among all the community groups and volunteer organizations that support them. The overarching goal of the initiative is that all children will be reading on grade level by 2012. Children who have a variety of books to read stand a better chance of accomplishing this goal. “Reading and literacy serve as the foundation of all learning,” said Barbara Elzie, interim executive director of Just Read, Florida! “It is our hope that this event will inspire children to learn to read and read well so that they can excel in life and achieve their dreams. The Just Read, Florida! initiative is helping to ensure a brighter future for all the children in Florida.” The Simon Kidgits Club’s “Book Blast” event is free to all members of the public; however families can sign up for the Kidgits Club during regular mall hours for a membership fee of $5. Membership includes a Kidgits Club membership card and T-shirt, scheduled entertainment and activities for families, a Birthday Club (including birthday card and gift redemption certificate), unique programs and offers, discounts and a quarterly newsletter. Financial Planning for FPL Employees - Part II I am an FPL employee. Do you have any suggestions specifically geared toward my employment? Yes, I have been working with FPL since 1991 (18 years), and I have some suggestions that should apply to you regardless of your age or time with the company. These suggestions complete those first three that ran in the the February 2 issue. Fourth: Before you retire become debt free. This means getting the kids raised, educated and maybe married off. It also means a zero balance on the credit cards, car and truck loans, home equity loan and house mortgage. If you have a choice to reduce debt or save an extra dollar you should consider putting the extra dollar towards reducing the debt. This process of debt reduction should be a priority and it may take several years to attain. Proper use of your net pay will shorten the time to attain this. Extra money from an outage or overtime can be extra money towards your debt. Try to live on your straight time income only. Fifth: If you can afford it and have family to take care of, then purchase the most group term life insurance. You can purchase as much as 4x your salary. This benefit is often not taken full advantage of.
Sixth: Purchase the disability insurance. Your job is stressful and your work is often dangerous. FPL focuses on your safety but people still get hurt. The disability insurance is a must. Seventh: Live where you want to but if Miami or Homestead is too expensive consider moving to a cheaper state. Miami is one of the most expensive areas to live in the USA. The homeowner insurance, property taxes and car insurance rates are so high that it chases retirees out of town. States such as Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and South Carolina are much cheaper to live. People move to be with their families (grandkids) but these states are more affordable and often times a lot friendlier and a lot less congested. These are suggestions that apply to all FPL employees. Management has merit raises in March that we can discuss what to do with. Some managers have stock options that we can also discuss. Celebrate Valentine’s Day at historic La Palma Ristorante BY GARY ALAN RUSE
With Valentine’s Day at hand, an area landmark with a reputation for catering to lovers, La Palma Ristorante and Bar is preparing for the occasion. In fact, the eatery-rating guide Zagat actually called La Palma “Coral Gables’ date place that seduces with romance.” Located in the historic La Palma building, which originally opened as a hotel in 1924 and designed by George Merrick, the father of Coral Gables Mediterranean architecture, the La Palma Ristorante has been uniquely restored to its present character. “La Palma is the perfect place to celebrate with a loved one,” said owner Paolo Montecchi. “Our restaurant has a lot of character and charm, as it is a historic fixture in Coral Gables and has been for nearly 17 years. “La Palma has the most romantic out-
door courtyard in all of Miami. Couples can enjoy fine Northern Italian cuisine and a nice bottle of wine under the moonlight. It’s truly special!” With its cuisine ranging from prime meat and seafood to homemade pasta, cheeses and salads, its quiet charm, along with a habit of pampering its guests, La Palma is intended to be an ideal place for Cupid’s arrows to fly. “Our longtime customers all say that we make dining out easy because we truly take care of everything,” Montecchi said. “At La Palma, entertaining is stress and worry free.” La Palma’s dining experience would not be complete without the savory creations of Chef Vittorio Amadi, who is known for the restaurant’s famous Ossobuco Alla Veneta and popular Seabass Piccata, along with many delectable homemade desserts. The owner also wants everyone to know
that they are here to stay. “Even though we are one of the oldest restaurants in Coral Gables, some still confuse us with The Palms which closed over a year ago,” Montecchi said. “We’re still here and plan to remain here for many more years to come. Our loyal customers continue to enjoy our highquality and very affordable cuisine, while a younger crowd is rediscovering La Palma’s romantic ambiance and entertaining environment filled with live music.” Open every day except Christmas Day, La Palma Ristorante and Bar offers lunch Monday through Friday beginning at 11:30 a.m. and dinner seven nights a week until midnight (1 a.m. on Saturdays); Sunday brunch is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For reservations or more information about La Palma Ristorante and Bar, visit online at <www.lapalmaristorante.com> or call 305-445-8777. –––––––––––––––––––––––––– Chef Vittorio Amadi of La Palma presents one of his special dishes.

Grand Opening of Dade’s First Teacher Quality Center UTD and AFT Presidents To Open UTD Professional Resource Center The United Teachers of Dade is taking the lead in improving teacher quality with the grand opening Monday of the UTD Professional Resource Center, one of the few union-run teacher centers in the nation where teachers and paraprofessionals will receive training and other support to develop their teaching skills. After a press briefing at the center, UTD President Karen Aronowitz, Florida Education Association President Andy Ford and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten— along with Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Haitian community leaders—will visit an elementary school in Little Haiti. Among the issues they plan to discuss is Dade’s need for community schools in disadvantaged areas, which would offer healthcare and other social services, academic help and other programs for students and their families. Of the UTD Professional Resource Center, Aronowitz said: “Great teaching just doesn’t happen. Teachers need ongoing training and
the opportunity to share ideas to strengthen their skills.” “Dade teachers want to continually hone their skills, and they know this will translate into student achievement,” said Weingarten, who gave a major speech in Washington, D.C., last month in which she proposed overhauling a teacher evaluation system that would include ongoing professional support to lift whole schools and school systems.

Healthy dose of laughter helped save author’s life BY TONYA STEWART
When London-based cancer sufferer Kit Hammond Stapely was told there was nothing more doctors could do for her, she realized that only a miracle could save her. That miracle came in the form of a new treatment — specially flown in from the U.S. — and a vital factor was the healing power of an “inappropriate sense of humor.” Kit not only recovered from her tussle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma — against all the specialists’ odds — but she trained as a “Laughter Leader” and Health Creation mentor, and now is helping others through “the black hole of a cancer diagnosis” and treatment by learning, among other things, to laugh at life. So, to what does Kit attribute this remarkable turnaround? “It was the sense of humour that got me into trouble all my life that played a big part in getting me out of trouble on my cancer journey,” she said. “If I couldn’t have laughed, I wouldn’t have survived.” And it was quite a journey. By1998 Kit had been through six years “overhung by the dreadful sword of Damocles,” following a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in
1992. During the next six years she had had the legal limit of every available chemotherapy drug but two; lost her hair five times from the treatment, several sets of lines in her chest, and her husband, who had given up all hope of her recovery, had lined up her replacement. In January 1998, a year after a gruelling stem cell transplant, Kit was told there was little more that doctors could do for her. Shortly afterwards upsurge of anger swept through her and she decided she didn’t want to go. “I wanted a miracle and I started working towards this goal,” she said. That miracle came in the form of Rituximab, a drug that her oncologist referred to as, “the magic bullet we’ve all been searching for because it targets only the cancer cell.” And guess what? The cancer cell they’d figured out how to target first was Kit’s own CD 19/ CD 20 cells (non-Hodkin’s lymphoma comes in many different forms). “I told you I’d get a miracle,” Kit winked at her oncologist, to which he replied, “It does seem a little like the U.S. Cavalry riding to the rescue at the very last moment.” “When life gives you lemons, make

Kit Hammond Stapely –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– lemonade and have a party, is the philosophy that’s always worked for me,” Kit said. “I decided that if I couldn’t laugh, I’d have cried — and I’m not so sure I could have stopped.” This sense of humour helped her on a number of occasions. On a trip to London (when she was first diagnosed, she lived in New York) an old friend asked her, “How are you, Kit?” “Oh fine, really,” she replied, grasping the nettle firmly, “considering I’ve been told I have incurable cancer!” “There was a long silence as she digested my words,” Kit said. “She’s one of those people who spring back from everything

like a bop-bag and this line, delivered with some panache, actually made her pause, but not for long. ‘Oh well, never mind. At least you know what you’re going to die of,’ she said. When I recovered from the shock I found that pretty funny.” And when her trademark shining mane of hair was lost through chemotherapy, Kit decided “to have fun with the hair loss. This was surprisingly easy, once I had made up my mind. A friend owned a wig catalogue company and gave me carte blanche. I stopped collecting at nine.” One of the wigs was long and blonde, (Kit affectionately named it “Helga”). “The wonderful thing about being bald is that you can have whatever hair you like. I’d always wanted long, straight, platinum blonde hair, so guess which wig was first on my list? I still encounter male friends who enquire wistfully after it.” Kit looks back on this period with fond nostalgia, “which is strange considering how ill I was and how often.” So it wasn’t surprising that Kit, who had herself gained so much hope through her laughter during her cancer experience, decided to train with Dr. Madan Kataria as a Laughter Yoga Leader (joining the ranks of the thousands of similarly trained laughter leaders worldwide — more than 90 in Florida alone). She now works as a Cancer Laughter and Wellbeing Guide and runs “Laughter Playshops” to help people who want to develop the healing powers of laughter and play in their own lives. “Laughter acts like the valve in the pressure cooker of stress,” Kit said. “If you can laugh at anything — I don’t care how serious it is — then you can survive it.” Kit will be talking about the benefits of laughter and signing copies of her book, It Could Be Verse: An Anthology of Laughter Quotations, at Books & Books in Coral Gables, 265 Aragon Ave., on Feb. 16. Designed to appeal to those facing stressful life situations, the book contains quotes from both famous and infamous people taken from the past 2,000 years.

ERCP with SpyGlass Comes to South Florida BY EDUARDO RU UAN, MD Board Certified Gastroenterologistt James Leavitt, MD, FACG is one of a handful of gastroenterologists trained to perform ERCP with Spy Glass. This procedure allows physicians to diagnose or treat problems in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas. Combining the use of x-rays and an endoscope, physicians can better examine the area, take tissue samples, and remove stones. Spyglass is a new technology that provides endoscopic imaging of all four quadrants of the biliary duct. It allows physicians to take a tissue sample with direct visualization, which greatly improves the rate of diagnosis and reduces the need for further testing and patient inconvenience. Dr. James Leavitt has been in prac-
tice since 1980. He is a graduate of D a r t m o u t h College, Magna Cum Laude, and the State University of New York Downstate Medical School. He completed his medical internship and residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami as well as his Gastroenterology fellowship. Dr. Leavitt is board certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. Dr. Leavitt received from the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) the Freshman Governor of the Year Award and this year served as director for the annual ACG Practice Management course held in San Diego, California. My neighbor’s Ficus tree is hanging over my property and killing my grass. What can I legally do? By law you are allowed to trim any tree branches that hang over your property line. But local ordinances require specific types of tree trimming and preclude such techniques as “hat racking” or just simply lopping off the branches with no care for the health of the tree. The cost of trimming a neighbor’s tree falls on you. If you do decide to take on the cost of trimming your neighbor’s tree, it is best to consult a certified arborist to ensure that the job is done legally and safely. Prior to taking this job on, though, you might want to have a friendly chat with your neighbor about the problem. A “good neighbor” tact is always advisable. Remember you share a property line with this person and a good relationship with your neighbor is always an asset. Hiring a certified arborist before trimming large trees such as Ficus is a sound investment. He can assess the growth pattern and health of the Ficus
THE ARBORIST Right Tree – Right Place
tree prior to trimming. By trimming with the future in mind, an arborist can open up the canopy of the tree, thus keeping the beauty of the tree intact while relieving the grass-killing problem of too-dense tree growth. A certified arborist can also assess the risk of root growth of the Ficus that may cause problems with septic tanks and water lines. Homeowners need to understand the future growth pattern of any tree before they plant. Sometimes “native” is not always “better,” and that “good deal” on a tree from a nursery or home improvement store can turn into a huge expense ten years down the road. The perfect tree planted in the wrong place equals a bad tree-buying decision. Ron von Paulus is an International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist (ID # Fl-5770A). He has more than 20 years experience working with trees in South Florida. He offers free consultations to homeowners and businesses. MCT bringing Mel Brooks’ The Producers to Kendall BY ROBERT HAMILTON
Miami Children’s Theater (MCT) is presenting the most honored musical of all time — Mel Brooks’ outrageously funny The Producers. Winner of 12 Tony Awards, The Producers follows the trials and tribulations of one of Broadway’s most famous duos, Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, who are convinced the surest way to make a fortune on Broadway is to stage the worst musical ever. MCT’s production runs Thursday, Feb. 11, through Sunday, Feb. 21, in the Russell Theater, located at the Alper JCC, 11155 SW 112 Ave. in Kendall. Directed by one of South Florida’s most acclaimed directors, Ron Headrick, this version of The Producers brings together some of the most talented thespians in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. With saucy showgirls, misguided
playwrights, outrageously flamboyant theater directors, Headrick and MCT deliver the goods. You can watch some of the most talented high school performers around — including Andrew Arisco as Max, Brian Montoya as Leo, Hannah Nardone as Ulla and Austin Sprague as Roger Debris — as they plunge a dagger into your funny bone. Huge sets, huge costumes, huge dance numbers — Miami Children’s Theater is out to put on the best “worst show ever!” Miami Children’s Theater is one of South Florida’s cultural gems. Now in it’s 13th year, MCT has produced more than 100 main stage productions and has watched its alumni move on to film, television and America’s most prestigious universities. Mercedes Benz SLK: Coupe to Roadster in 22 seconds Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS It’s tough to find something to dislike about the Mercedes Benz SLK 350; it’s just about the perfect two-seat small sports car and, with its retractable hardtop, it goes from a coupe to a roadster in just 22 seconds. The 2010 SLK line includes three models: SLK300 — powered by a 228-hp 3.0liter V-6 engine; SLK350 — with a 300-hp version of the popular 3.5-liter V-6, and SLK55 AMG — the high-performance model fitted with a 355-hp AMG V-8. All 2010 models come with a steering wheel covered in premium leather and a new monitoring system showing individual tire pressures. All three have new 17-inch twin five-spoke alloy wheels, and all have an innovative Direct-Steer system that involves variable-ratio rack gearing to provide an “on-center” steering feel with a higher responsiveness beyond the first five degrees of steering angle. Direct Steer min-
imizes steering effort during cornering and in low-speed maneuvers such as parking. Our test car for the week was the SLK350 (18/25 mpg) and it is an impressive car to drive with amazing acceleration. The V-6 has advanced engine technology that includes four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing. The 3.0-liter twincam engine develops more than 80 percent of its maximum torque at only 1,500 rpm. While variable valve timing gets much of the credit for the SLK300’s broad torque curve, a two-stage intake manifold plays a key role as well. Other high-tech engine features include tumble flaps that increase gas mileage by creating more turbulence in the intake passages at part throttle. With a higher-revving 7,200-rpm redline, the SLK350 engine has more horsepower and torque, thanks to its larger displacement as well as specially shaped pistons that produce a higher 11.7-to-1 compression ratio, a modified camshaft for higher valve lift, heavy-duty conical valve springs and lightweight valves made of high-temperature steel, and sodium-cooled exhaust valves. All models in the SLK Class can be ordered with a Sport package that includes AMG body styling, sport suspension, steer-

ing-wheel gearshift paddles and 18-inch AMG wheels. The Sport package includes AMG’s automatic “rev-matching” feature for smooth downshifting, which also improves braking. The SLK styling was freshened last year, so there is very little change for 2010. The latest SLK line has a front design strongly influenced by Formula 1 racing, and a rear apron with an air diffuser and trapezoidal exhaust outlets. Inside, all SLKs have chronometer-type gauges with aluminum accents, a three-
spoke sport steering wheel and an audio system with an in-dash six-disc CD/DVD changer, as well as a Bluetooth interface that allows a cellular phone to be operated through the car’s audio system. Base price on the 2010 Mercedes Benz SLK is $51,900. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. He may be contacted by calling 305-662-2277, ext. 261, or by addressing email correspondence to <LetsTalkCars@aol.com>.

Cancer - You will feel good in the week but starting in the middle of the week you may feel cranky without being sure why. If you can swing it, it might not be a bad idea to take off early so you can get some time alone to clear your mind before you get swamped with requests for help or assistance from family members.
Libra - You and your significant other need to get together this week, but it may not be the best week to work on those overdue chores. This is one week where procrastinating could be a good thing. You both need a break. If you are single, you may find yourself driving just for the fun of it this week.

Aquarius - You'll have more luck with romance than with work this week. Unfortunately you may have to spend a good deal of time getting computers and telephones to hook together correctly. This is not a good week to install or purchase new electronics.
Virgo - Paperwork is challenging and communications devices may be problematic this week. Commuting to and from the workplace may be a bit challenging this week. You may have a disagreement or minor misunderstanding with an older coworker or a client in your business.
Pisces - Everyone in your extended family may seem grouchy and unreasonable right now, but there is no reason why you have to follow their lead. You have things to feel happy and grateful for, wallow in your good fortune a little - that mood may be catching.
Leo - Don't let a sudden argument or dis-
