Jane Forman announces overnight summer tennis academy in Maine

almetto Bay resident and known internationally artist David Schor currently is exhibiting a number of his paintings at the Wirtz Gallery in South Miami. The exhibition, which opened on Feb. 2, continues through Feb. 27 at the gallery located in the First National Bank of South Miami, 5750 Sunset Dr. There was an artist’s reception with wine and food on Feb. 6. Schor said that the theme of the exhibition was influenced by his love of the sea and the international locales he has visited in the course of his work-related travels. He has paintings in about 24 countries around the world in addition to the United States. “It’s extremely colorful,” Schor said of the exhibition. “It’s mostly from my

Debating for the honor of making the first pitch It would take much more than a brisk winter wind and a few raindrops to dampen the enthusiasm on Jan. 30 at Palmetto Bay Park. Members of the Palmetto Bay Village Council engaged in healthy debate over who would throw the first pitch at the annual Baby/Navy Intra-squad Game for the Miami Palmetto State Champion Girls Softball team. Jane Forman of the Jane Forman Tennis Academy and the Parker Brothers of Miami, owners of Camp Waziyatah in Waterford, ME, have announced a 2009 overnight summer camp location for the youngster who loves tennis but doesn’t want to give up the fun of an outstanding camp experience. Camp Waziyatah and the Jane Forman Tennis Academy joined forces in order to provide a traditional summer camp experience with a focus on tennis. For the first two weeks of each four-week session at Camp Waziyatah, the Jane Forman Tennis Academy will conduct a tennis academy style program for all ages and abilities within the standard camp program. Professional instruction and private lessons by ex-touring tennis professionals will be available to all Camp Waziyatah participants Upon retiring from professional competitive play in 1989, Jane Forman turned her efforts and enthusiasm for the sport of tennis to teaching and managing tennis facilities in South Florida. Southwood’s String Orchestra: An international array of talent BY LEE STEPHENS Their names and accomplishments read like a young Who’s Who of Miami’s top talents. Their music radiates some of the finest classical works ever written. Yet, they are only between the ages of 11 and 14. Such are the gifts emanating from the orchestra room at Southwood Middle School’s Center for the Arts, where each young musician’s rare gift is nurtured on a daily basis, thanks to Miami’s magnet program. Jacques Gadway began studying violin in the Suzuki method when he was just 4. He was inspired by his mother, Tantri, who is a native of Jakarta, Indonesia, and is a pianist and flautist. She, along with Jacques’ father, Dr. John F. Gadway, encourage their children to follow their gifts. Jacque’s older brother, Jerry, switched from piano to violin when he saw Jacques come home with a violin in the spring of 2000. Both brothers were scheduled to go to All State in January — Jerry representing Coral Reef High School and Jacques representing Southwood Middle School. A third brother, Togi, a freshman at Coral Reef Senior High School, plays the classical guitar. There is no All State Competition in this instrument, otherwise, Togi most likely would have joined his brothers in the All State performances this January. Jennifer Yu has been playing violin for eight out of her 13 years. Her parents came to the United States from China to study at the University of Miami 20 years ago. Her grandparents had coveted teaching positions in China before they retired and joined

her parents in America. Jennifer is excited to have been chosen as an All State participant this year, and believes that her family, her strongest support, is behind her musical accomplishments. Her older sister, a senior at Harvard University who plans to study medicine, is equally accomplished. Santiago Jason Olaguibel V, originally from New York, made his parents promise him that they would find him a suitable music program in Miami comparable to what he had in New York. He already had performed at the Tillies Center with the American Symphony, and had grown up in East Meadow, also known as the “Mecca of Music.” It was difficult for Santiago to leave New York, where he felt surrounded by such musicians as Billy Joel, Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler. Only Southwood Middle School’s renowned Magnet Music Program would be suitable for him. His parents agreed. “This made up for leaving New York,” Santiago said. “I knew then that I was heading toward an exceptional conservatory-type environment that, if we were still in New York, my parents would have had to pay top dollar for!” Santiago has made it into the Florida All State two years in a row, the Superintendent’s Honor Festival two years in a row, and has ranked

“Superior” two years in a row with Solos and Ensemble. Nicole Milagros Colon, a native Colombian, is a member of the Greater Miami Youth Symphony and plays both the viola and piano. Nicole, 13, was inspired to start the viola when her elementary school music teacher played CDs containing music by Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, and introduced students to stringed instruments. She joined the Southwood String Orchestra right after fifth grade, and has a 10-year-old sister who is a violinist as well. Kenneth Fernandez, whose family originally is from the Dominican Republic, was inspired to play the violin after listening to his sister, Janelle, who also was a Southwood Orchestra student. He believes “music is indescribable because it is a feeling that is out of this world.” Tinder Burris, Strings director, is a master cellist. She holds a bachelor’s degree in cello performance and a master’s degree in music education from the University of Miami. Formerly music director at South Miami Elementary School, Miami’s finest elementary music magnet, in 2005 she became String Orchestra director in the music magnet program at the prestigious Southwood Middle School. Burris became a National Board

Certified Teacher in Music in 2002. Past student accomplishments include Anna Litvinenko, from Russia, who was the Concerto winner for the Miami Symphony Orchestra and Alhambra Orchestra. She performed at the Lincoln Theater as the cello soloist at the tender young age of 12. Burris’ orchestra program has had the largest representation of All State students from a single school in the state of Florida. They also boast the largest representation of string students accepted into Coral Reef High School and New World School of the Arts, and students continue to receive full scholarships to music schools and universities on an annual basis. As an artist committed to continuing the legacy of great music, Burris emphasized, “Music magnet programs in the public schools should be viewed as a necessity, not a frill. SCHOR, from page 1 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– sailing series, but also with scenes from around the world, and there are some examples of my portraits, also done in different parts of the world.” Schor works in a variety of media, including oils, acrylics and pen and ink. Although he loves South Florida, he does spend a fair amount of time globe-trotting. “Most years I travel up to 20 weeks a year in a variety of places ranging from France to Hawaii, doing paintings for clients,” Schor said. “All those come from the Internet. I contact people all over the world; they contact me, and we have a long exchange back and forth about what kind of paintings they like, based on the pictures on my website, and by the time I go there I have a two-inch thick file to work with.” Schor said that he has one client in Australia that he and his wife went to see, and another in Norway who owns property in China. He has kept in touch with them as friends for years after he did paintings for them. In April of 2007 Schor was honored in San Remo, Italy, at a ceremonial

unveiling of his historic painting depicting the League of Nations accord signed at the Castello Devachan 87 years earlier. A resident of Florida since 1974, Schor was born in New York and raised in Connecticut. He received a bachelor’s degree in biology at Tufts University, then went on to George Washington University to receive a master’s degree in hospital administration. He has succeeded in two careers and has interests in sailing, karate, reading, writing and travel. His degree in biology has been helpful in his artistic work because an understanding of anatomy lends itself to a more accurate rendering of people and animals. Schor has had paintings commissioned by a number of organizations, ranging from the YMCA of the USA to The Rotary, Village of Pinecrest, Johnson and Wales University, Youth Crimewatch of America, Miami Children’s Hospital and The City of Homestead. Flinn, Jr. was proud to tell us via email that his wife, Alex Flinn, an accomplished writer of young adult novels, is moving her career along very nicely, thank you. Alex Flinn’s young-adult novel, “Beastly,” is a high school fable about a popular but arrogant teenage boy who is turned into a monster by a witch in his class and must find true love to break the curse. CBS Films bought rights to the book and is moving forward on the supernatural high-school tale, bringing on Daniel Barnz to helm and write the picture’s script. Producers are seeking a young heartthrob to play the lead role. (Sorry, Gene...you missed the boat on that one just a bit...) Maria Faillace will oversee for CBS Films, with Susan Cartsonis producing and Roz Wesiberg co-producing. Director Barnz, who wrote the Sundance coming-of-age drama “Phoebe in Wonderland,” is agented by

And by the way... speaking of Mayor Flinn, Gene also wrote to tell us that he recently found Starburst candy wrappers, sports equipment license tags and juice box straw wrappers on the ground at Evelyn Greer Park. “Please note that I picked it up,” said Gene. “Leave the area cleaner than you found it.” Dennis C. Moss, Miami-Dade County Chairman, committed $3,000 from his discretionary fund for Hector and Mirian Serrano, who lost their three children in that awful car wreck on January 25. The donation will be given to Neighbors 4 Neighbors, a local non-profit dedicated to being an important resource for individuals and families facing every day crises. Hector Serrano was stopped at a red light on South Dixie Highway at SW 211 Street when a drunk driver rear-ended Serrano’s minivan. The impact killed Serrano’s three children: Hector, 10; Esmeralda, 7; and Amber, 4. Serrano was injured, but survived. The accident has created an outpouring of donations and support for the Serrano family from county residents. Hundreds attended the children’s funeral to pay their final respects. “My sincerest condolences go to the Serrano family,” said Chairman Moss, who is also the father of three children. “There is no doubt that the Miami-Dade community has been deeply affected by the deaths of their children. No amount of money could

State Farm: The name tells the whole story R. Kenneth Bluh VIEWPOINT KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Note the word “Florida” in State Farm’s corporate name, State Farm Florida Insurance Company. Do you know what this means? It means that State Farm segregates all the premiums it earns and all the claims paid in Florida from premiums and claims from other states in which it writes policies. Google “State Farm” and see how many companies they have: State Farm Fire and Casualty Company, State Farm General Insurance Company (California), State Farm Country Mutual Insurance Company of Texas, and more. Get the idea? When in college, we learned the theory of large numbers: the more numbers in the count that you are averaging, the less dramatic the highs and lows. By lumping all the Florida claims, to the exclusion of State Farm claims from

other states, the greater the chance they have of showing years with very high spikes in claims as opposed to premium earned. This gives State Farm the ability to say to the State of Florida “Look at all the money we had to pay out after the storm. We need Florida to grant a large premium increase to cover our losses.” Just think about the various types of storms and the damage they cause property owners. Have you ever seen a single year where there was an earthquake and mudslides in California, the Mississippi overflowed its banks, an unusual number of twisters hit Kansas with snow storms and cold weather causing havoc in Illinois all in the same year? Of course not! If State Farm was to lump all the claims from across the county into one “premium pool” the cost to the company would be evened out and the company could continue to write without experiencing years of very high losses. Premium is calculated based on anticipated losses, plus the cost of running the company, plus a profit for the stockholders. Put all the premiums collected across the country into one pool against

the claims from across the country and you would have very few years where claims and expenses would outweigh premiums collected. Florida should prohibit any insurance company that writes in the state from using a “Florida only pool.” Secondly, the state should prohibit any insurance company that writes multiple lines in our state to elect which of the insurance products it will sell. In other words: write all your lines — fire, auto, life or health products — or don’t write anything. Prohibit insurance companies such as State Farm from cherrypicking the product lines that make a profit and not write a product that is, in their words, losing money. The spokesperson for State Farm said, as if bragging, that her company would never drop an insured on short notice. That they would give insured a

six-month notice of non-renewal. Ms. State Farm Spokesperson, that’s the law in Florida. You aren’t being nice to our citizens; you are merely complying with Florida law. Gov. Christ is quoted as saying “State Farm is probably the most expensive insurance company selling in Florida. Good riddance.” State Farm’s senior management should rethink their position. Florida is one of the most populous states in the union, You would be leaving a lot of premium on the table if you pull out of Florida.

AG: Be on the lookout for tax-related scams Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Every year, too many South Floridians become victims of tax-related scams and fraud by falling prey to con artists that seek to attack their vulnerability. In a recently issued advisory, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum warned residents to be on the lookout for tax-related scams. There are a few important steps that you can take to avoid being scammed by a non-legitimate tax preparer. First, you always should get the credentials of the tax preparer and ask if he or she belongs to a state board or bar association. Also, shop around for quotes and ask tax preparers if they will represent consumers who are audited or pay any audit-related fees. Finally, always remember that only attorneys, certified public accountants and enrolled agents can represent taxpayers before the IRS in any matter. A number of tax related scams occur during tax season, the most common of which is known as “phishing.” This occurs when individuals pose as government or banking representatives and send consumers emails asking for personal information necessary to process refunds. Always remember, the IRS will never send emails requesting personal information to process refunds, so never give away this kind of information in email messages. If you want to check on the status of your refund, visit the official agency website at <www.IRS.gov> and click on “Where’s My Refund.” Another scheme that often occurs during tax season is the creation of fraudulent charities that send emails to consumers seeking donations, which they claim to be tax deductible. Be aware that Florida law requires charities to register with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and provide financial information about income and expenditures. You have the right and responsibility to ask for an organization’s financial report and its

federal tax identification number. For help identifying legitimate charities, visit the Better Business Bureau’s charity research page at <www.bbb.org>. Consumers may file complaints about tax-related scams and any other types of fraud by calling the Attorney General’s Fraud Hotline at 1-866-9667226, or by filing a complaint online at <www.myfloridalegal.com>. STOCK MARKETS FALL AS PRESIDENT’S RISE The stock market greeted the inauguration of Barack Obama by plunging, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 332 points, or 4 percent. Surprised? Well you shouldn’t be. More often than not, the stock market has greeted new presidential terms with declines. In fact, of the 27 inaugurations that have occurred since the Dow was created in 1896, this index has declined on 19 of those days, or 70 percent of the time. Even more telling is that there appears to be no correlation between the Dow’s direction on inauguration Day and the stock market’s direction over the subsequent four years. Prior to Tuesday, for example, the worst Inauguration Day performance for the Dow occurred in 1981, the first of Ronald Reagan’s inaugurations. The Dow fell by almost 2 percent on that day, and though the stock market didn’t do well for the next year and a half, a monumental bull market did begin in August 1982 — a bull that didn’t stop for good until March 2000, nearly two decades later. So, unlike some commentators who are attempting to draw some political meaning to the Jan. 20 decline, the historical data suggest that the day’s drop had little to do with it being Inauguration Day, and virtually everything to do with the same factors that have been relentlessly forcing the market down for a year and a half now. One of those factors is sentiment. The market is heavily driven by emotion these days and that’s something that’s always hard to predict.

Artist/sculptor Marcie Ziv will unveil her newest groundbreaking piece Vanity Dog, a life size mosaic mixed media sculpture depicting “Man’s Best Friend� emblazoned with intricate mirrored glass mosaics following the inventive tradition of Niki de Saint Phalle and Antonio Gaudi. Prospective college students should be filing FAFSA forms BY TOBY ROSE I have been asked by many of my students and their parents what is the most important thing they should be doing now in preparation for college. Filling out the FAFSA application should be your No. 1 priority during the month of February. Go to <www.fafsa.ed.gov> to find your free application. Students, please make sure you do the following: • File the FAFSA for the correct aid year. All new or first time students should be filling the 2009/2010 FAFSA. • Use your LEGAL name as it appears on your Social Security card. • Indicate on the FAFSA if you, your parents or anyone in your parents’ household receives one of the following: Supplementary Security Income, Food Stamps, Free or Reduced Price Lunch, TANF or WIC. You may be eligible for a federal grant aid. • If you have interest income reported on your tax return, you must report the dollar amount of what you have in savings or checking accounts as of the day you are filing the FAFSA form. Please note the use of the words “ I,” “You” and “Your,” which refer to you, the student, and not your parent or preparer. Be sure to report YOUR

income in the STUDENT section; report your parents’ income only in the parent section. If you report your parents’ income as your own it will negatively affect your aid offer. All questions that require a dollar amount must be reported in whole numbers (no cents) and be answered, even if the answer is zero. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE A FIELD BLANK. Parents, here are some helpful hits: • Parents who report a value on a Federal Tax return (line 17) MUST report the net worth of the rental property/asset on question 88 of the FAFSA. BY JESSICA RODRIGUEZ FIU Theatre presents the third theater production of the school year, The Birds, opening Thursday, Feb. 12, and continuing through Feb. 22. The free-flying musical adaptation of the classic Greek comedy, The Birds is sure to capture audiences from across South Florida. Performances are Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. on the Wertheim Performing Arts Center Main Stage. Playwright Len Jenkin updates Aristophanes The Birds to include real estate developers, computer sex addicts, dirty politicians, and televangelists. The play follows a washed-up comic and his manager as they flee bad debts and unsavory associates in Las Vegas. Somehow they end up in a paradise of the birds and hatch a plan to blackmail the gods. Jenkin also included scenes from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film with Tippi Hedren and Suzanne Pleshette making guest appearances in Cloud Cuckoo Land to entertain the film’s winged fans. Jenkin is one of America’s most

renowned playwrights. His works include the modern classic Dark Ride and have been produced throughout the United States, as well as in England, France, Germany, and Japan. He has received many honors and awards, including three OBIE awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation Award, a nomination for an Emmy Award, and four National Endowments for the Arts Fellowships. The FIU Theatre production of The Birds features an original musical score by Armando Tranquilino, adjunct professor in the music department of the College of Architecture + The Arts. FIU professor and director Michael Yawney’s previous production, Three Angels Dancing on a Needle, was proclaimed by the Miami New Times as the Best Theatrical Production of 2007 before going on to win a Brick Theater award for its subsequent New York run. Yawney’s play 1,000 Homosexuals recently had a sold-out engagement at the Arsht Center and will return to play Miami Beach’s Colony Theater in February. GEICO Gecko exhibit open at Metrozoo until Mar. 1 BY ROBERT HAMILTON The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and GEICO (Government Employees Insurance Company) recently welcomed the GEICO Gecko and his wild cousins to Miami Metrozoo. GEICO handed out free passes to the first 100 children who came to the Miami Metrozoo on Saturday, Jan. 31, to help celebrate the one year anniversary of GEICO’s traveling gecko exhibit. “GEICO takes conservation very seriously, and we’re proud to share that with AZA,” said Tony Nicely, GEICO president, chair and CEO. “Our gecko is a mini-celebrity and has been a successful spokescreature for our auto and motorcycle insurance products. Now he is doing the same for wildlife conservation at AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums across America.” The traveling GEICO Gecko exhibit is at Miami Metrozoo through Mar. 1 and features giant day geckos. Day geckos are a unique group of lizards native to Madagascar and the Indian Ocean islands. The GEICO Gecko costume character will appear at the zoo each weekend through Mar. 1. “We’re excited to host the geckos at our zoo,” said Eric Stephens, director of Miami Metrozoo. “Not only is the GEICO Gecko exhibit a great way to

view these interesting animals up close, it provides an opportunity for visitors to learn about the important role the zoo plays in conservation.” Jim Maddy, AZA president and CEO noted, “GEICO and AZA have formed a solid partnership for the sake of wildlife conservation and education. The gecko’s commercial appeal combined with the opportunity to reach 175 million zoo and aquarium visitors every year is powerful.” Miami Metrozoo is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is $15.95 for adults, $11.95 for children 312 and free for children 2 and under. The GEICO Gecko exhibit can be viewed at Dr. Wilde’s World inside the zoo. 1. What is the difference between traditional liposuction and “Smart Lipo”? Traditional liposuction is performed under local or general anesthesia. Once the patient is fully anesthetized, large incisions are made in the skin through which a steel rod (cannula) is passed. The surgeon utilizes the cannula to break up tissue by repeatedly thrusting it deep into fatty deposits. Subsequently, the fat is removed via the use of a suction device. The procedure is traumatic and routinely leads to localized swelling, bruising and bleeding. It is not uncommon for the patient to suffer from significant pain which results in many days of down time. Ultimately, skin laxity and ripples may develop over the liposuctioned area leading to unsightly contour abnormalities. On the other hand, during laser lypolysis (Smart Lipo) tiny one millimeter incisions are placed in the skin. After local anesthesia is infused a laser is passed into fatty deposits and these deposits liquefied without trauma to tissue: the liquefied fat is then removed utilizing a power aspirator. Swelling and bruising are uncommon after surgery because trauma is almost totally avoided. Many patients are able to return to work the very next day. The skin overlying the liposuctioned area is usually without laxity or ripples. This is because the delivery of heat during the procedure causes the skin

2. Can laser therapy help treat acne? There are four major factors responsible for causing acne. They act together to cause the characteristic pimples, whiteheads and blackheads associated with this problem. They are: (1) overactive oil glands leading to (2) a blockage of the skin pores (3) the subsequent proliferation of a bacteria know as P. acne (4) which produces chemicals that alter the composition of the oil: this all results in very irritated skin leading to chronic inflammation. Various treatments are used to help sterilize the skin (tetracycline) and decrease inflammation (Retin-A and Accutane). These treatments are fraught with side effects and oftentimes are only partially effective. If acne remains an ongoing problem, treatment with an IPL (intense pulse light) Laser should be seriously considered. IPL Laser energy is able to penetrate deep into hair follicles where bacteria remain sequestered in collections of oil, subsequently killing the organism and helping to sterilize the deeper layers of the skin. Once P. acne is killed, inflammation of the skin markedly decreases, pores open and oil production diminishes. Acne can be placed into remission for long periods of time after treatment with an IPL Laser. It is recommended that a single treatment be performed every three months to maintain the acne in a quiescent state. LET’S TALK CARS The Subaru Forester is one tough little sport utility vehicle (SUV) and it continues to gain in popularity with American consumers and gather industry accolades. Most recently, the Forester topped 12 other vehicles to earn the Motor Trend magazine award for “Sport Utility of the Year.” Editor-in-chief Angus MacKenzie said the judges’ decision was unanimous, a pretty strong recommendation by any standard of measure, and added: “The Subaru Forester is the SUV for our times.” The Forester has been redesigned for 2009 and given a new chassis with a better safety structure. It’s longer (3.6 inches) and wider (2 inches), with more rear seat legroom and cargo space, and about 100 pounds heavier. Forester is exceptionally stable and rugged off

road, and has a proven all-wheel drive system and a new rear suspension. It comes with either a 170 hp 2.5-liter boxer engine or a 224 hp turbocharged powerplant. It stacks up very well against the Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4. Despite the increase in size and power, Forester gets better fuel economy figures (20/26 mpg) than last year’s model. The turbocharged Forester XT gets 19/24 mpg, but needs premium fuel. The 16.9-gallon fuel tank has a highway range of 400 miles. As for styling, there’s a functional hood scoop, amber turn signals in the headlights, flared wheelwells and fivespoke 17-inch alloy wheels. A camouflaged black C-pillar enhances the look from the side. From the rear, the XT has a twin chrome-tipped exhaust and a spoiler over the rear window. The Subaru Forester received the highest possible ratings in frontal and side impact crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In addition to a five-star frontal and side impact crash-test rating, the 2009 Forester received a four-star

rollover resistance rating. With a starting price of $19,995, the Forester is $1,200 less than the price of a 2008 model. Thus, it’s no surprise that Subaru is set to be the only major automaker to report higher sales for 2008. The company reported that sales for 2008 rose by 0.3 percent to 187,699 vehicles, up from 187,208 in 2007, and

the hot-selling Forester was a big reason for the increase. Forester sales surged by 36.4 percent in 2008.
