Tendrich addresses PBBA luncheon on village issues BY GARY ALAN RUSE oward Tendrich, village councilmember for District 2, addressed members of the Palmetto Bay Business Association (PBBA) at their monthly luncheon on Thursday, Apr. 2, at Fleming: A Taste of Denmark Restaurant, 8511 SW 136 St. Tendrich was quick to point out that the mayor and most of the other council members were in Tallahassee attending “Miami-Dade Days,” hoping to convince state legislators to consider funding programs and projects that are important to the village during the next year or two. “Last year, as a result of our participation in Tallahassee, we were able to secure $800,000 for storm-water infrastructure improvements, substantial funding for parks development, and a sizeable grant to implement recycling efforts across the village,” Tendrich said. “This year, Mayor Flinn, Vice Mayor Pariser, and Councilwoman Stanczyk, joined by village manager Ron Williams, are lobbying for additional storm-water funding, to control flooding, and assistance to further improve Palmetto Bay Park.” Tendrich promised that additional information about those efforts would be provided at future meetings or via the village’s website. He also gave an update on the progress of the newest park in the village, the Palmetto Bay Branch Library and Community Room at Ludovici Park. “We’re about 99.999 percent done with construction, inside and out,” Tendrich said. “All that remains are minor items on the ‘punch’ list. Landscaping is also wrapping up. And a ‘turn-over’ meeting is planned for mid-April with the MiamiDade Library System folks. “At that point, they will advise us when they will begin stocking and shelv-

We’ll keep you posted.” Tendrich also discussed plans connected with Earth Week/Earth Day activities, including a guided kayak/canoe trip on Sunday, Apr. 19, with the assistance of a group of Tropical Audubon volunteers. There also will be another ladybug release at five different area schools on Apr. 22 and 23; a village clean-up/sing-along effort, called the Magical Musical Litter

Bus Tour, with local residents and students; an environmental discussion on Wednesday, Apr. 22, at the Council of the Whole meeting, and a Bike Tour on Saturday, Apr. 25. “It’s a big program, but it is hugely important to your village council that we recognize Earth Day in this way,” Tendrich said. “We want to be known as an ‘extreme green community’ and sharing the importance of conservation with the young people of our village is key is to this effort.”

BY LAVERNE GUILLEN Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) honored recipients of the Employee Valor and Excellence Awards during its annual Medal Day ceremony on Mar. 20. More than 60 firefighters were recognized in six different categories, with the highest being the Silver Medal of Valor. This award is given to firefighters who have performed an act of outstanding bravery in the presence of extreme lifethreatening and personal danger, above and beyond the ordinary call of duty, and performed in the spirit of the department’s mission. Firefighter Nicholas DiGiacomo, a crew member on Fireboat 1, was awarded the Silver Medal of Valor for his extraordinary rescue efforts during a fire at the Miami Beach Marina on Mar.

31, 2008. He rescued two people who were trapped inside a yacht that was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighter DiGiacomo risked his own safety by relinquishing his air pack and mask to the trapped individuals who were on the brink of being overcome by toxic smoke and flames. Using a power saw, he was able to cut an opening in the side of the yacht and freed the trapped occupants. “Firefighter DiGiacomo earned the Silver Medal of Valor for his heroic lifesaving actions,” said Fire Chief Herminio Lorenzo, “Our department is proud to honor him for the bravery he demonstrated at this incident.” Family members, elected officials, local police and fire chiefs from the entire South Florida area were in attendance to witness this award ceremony. This event is modeled in the rich tradition of FDNY’s award presentations.

The affected individuals/institutions are required to obtain a Certificate of Use prior to offering such property for sale, transfer or alienation. The purpose of the new CU requirement serves to document and disclose to the public and buyers, the extent to which foreclosed residential properties (i.e. single family, condominium, townhouse, or duplex) comply with all applicable building codes and zoning codes prior to offering such property for sale. The CU process includes preparation of a disclosure of findings report, which identifies the following: • Zoning code violations; • Building code violations, and • Good faith estimate of the cost to remedy any deficiencies. The disclosure of findings report must

be completed by an architect or professional engineer licensed and registered in the State of Florida and submitted to the Zoning Permits/ Inspections Section of the department at the MiamiDade Permitting and Inspection Center, 11805 SW 26 St. Planning and Zoning Department staff will review the report and determine acceptance or denial. Once accepted, the report then would need to be recorded with the Clerk of the Courts and returned to the Department of Planning and Zoning for issuance of the CU. Winholds celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR

AROUND TOWN Talk about staying power. Marvin and Eleanor Winhold recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, and received a special proclamation from the village to commemorate the fact. During remarks before the members of the Palmetto Bay Business Association monthly meeting on April 2, District 2 Councilman Howard Tendrich honored Marvin and Eleanor Winhold for “showing us how dedication and commitment are key to a lifetime of happiness,” in celebration of their anniversary. The long-time Palmetto Bay residents are best known for operating Winhold Montessori School, a private pre-school located at 17555 So. Dixie Hwy, since 1982. Congratulations, Marvin and Eleanor! His hat in the ring? I hear that Chris Knecht is having a blast considering running for the council in Palmetto Bay and that maybe just maybe Doug Dewitt, a real estate guru and a soccer coach just might help him figure out how to run down the field and score big time. Most people are aware about how frugal the Eugene Flinn, the mayor of Palmetto Bay, really is and it’s a tribute to his financial wisdom and how he treats the taxpayers’ money, so it is with love that we are happy to report that the rumor floating around town is that HIS HONOR actually paid for lunch for a lunch buddy at Flanagan’s in the Suniland Shopping Center. Golly,

Gene, are you feeling OK, and for goodness sakes how come you never pay for my lunch? Credit Commissioner Joe Martinez with keeping his record intact on the Marlin stadium by voting against a funding package that passed 9-4, the first vote taken last month to build the baseball field in Little Havana. Once that initial item was approved, he voted “yes” to waive construction bids that needed a two-third’s majority for passage, in effect, saying “go ahead and build the park” now that its funding is a matter of record, allowing him to stick to a wellpublicized vow against the funding plan but favoring the park itself. He reported to Kendall constituents “receiving an enormous amount of phone calls, emails and U.S. post letters on this issue” but when Commissioner Bruno Barreiro got financing and construction bifurcated, our Kendall Comish could stick to his guns. Now, will some county attorneys come up with a better description than “bifurcated,” which sounds like something better left unsaid in proper company? Bird Road Update: For some reason, we like the casual pace of the charrette studying beautification and improvements to upgrade commercial clutter along SW 40 Street between the Palmetto X-way and the Turnpike. MDC planner reports March 31 session was “just another public input meeting to continue suggesting details for landscaping and street improvements. There’s no time limit imposed.” Taking their own ‘sweet time’ at P&Z headquarters must appeal to current Bird owners who have wondered if those future improvements, once voted, may

More important to our legislators: Smokers or students? R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Our legislators in Tallahassee are on a hunt for more revenue sources and at the same time are examining every state expense with an eye toward saving money. Why? Our state budget is $3 billion in the hole. A small number of legislators are joined by the Florida Professional Firefighters Association and any Floridian with common sense in urging the legislature to increase the state sales tax on cigarettes by a dollar a pack. Estimated annual revenue to the state is $870 million. That alone would reduce our deficit by 29 percent. What is the argument against increasing the tobacco tax? It’s not dependable, inasmuch as a tax increase may dissuade many smokers from smoking. Crazy argument: all revenues are unstable. Real estate taxes go down as the

value of homes decrease. When shoppers stop or slow down buying that new TV set or a pair of shoes for the kids, the amount of sales taxes collected goes down. The question is: Why are our governor and our legislators so against increasing the sales tax on tobacco but show little hesitancy about increasing the cost of education in the state? Could it be that the average smoker is a voter and most students aren’t old enough to vote? Could it be that the tobacco industry has a big lobby in Tallahassee and education has only teachers, a few parents and students fighting for more educational dollars? Adding to the argument in favor of increasing the sales tax by a buck, as pointed out by the firefighters, is the fact that millions of dollars would be saved in fighting fires, inasmuch as 20 percent of home fires are caused by smokers. If fewer people smoked, there would be fewer home fires, saving possibly millions in firefighting expenses. Add to that fact, which we all know is true, is that smoking causes cancer.

VIEWPOINT Fewer smokers, less cancer means lower medical expenses. And, saving lives is even more important than saving dollars. Students are being asked to come up with more dollars for tuition at a time when parents funding their children’s college education find it becoming more and more difficult. Now, on top of the parent’s financial problems, the state is considering cuts in Bright Futures scholarships and other student funding programs. No need to worry, our legislature is hard at work examining other state expenses in the hope of eliminating, or at least reducing, the $3 billion shortfall. They are considering such gigantic items as saving $11,000 a year by taking pagers away from our state troopers. That’s $11,000. Why that alone would

reduce our state budget by a whopping .0000036 percent. If our governor and our legislators are so concerned about smokers rebelling against them at the next election, they could adopt this campaign slogan: “Smokers, we are trying to save your life!” Why, I bet we even have some smokers in our legislature — maybe that’s the reason for their hesitancy. After all, lobbyists aren’t permitted to buy legislators smokes anymore.

Double-checking your credit history not only will help you avoid identity theft; it can save you money in ways you may have never considered. It is a good idea to check out your credit report at least twice a year to see if there are any extra credit cards or bank accounts in your name of which you may not be aware. By federal law, you can contest negative reports on your credit and demand that improper records be removed. This is important when it comes to building up your credit history for the next time you apply for a loan, take out a new insurance policy, or even look for an apartment to rent. The best part of it is, by federal law, the major U.S. credit reporting agencies are required to make the process a lot more consumer friendly and even provide free credit reports when requested periodically. However, it’s still a hassle getting all those complicated financial records, and that’s why there’s been a whole new industry popping up over the past few years offering “free credit reports.” Although these sites claim to be free of charge, consumers have complained that most of the reports offered are not free at all. They’re often filled with “extra charges,” “membership fees” and “credit protection plans” that can add up to big bucks to use them. To better warn consumers about these scams and promote a new “really free” web-

And on top of it all, we’ve got to find enough money by Apr. 15 to pay our IRS tax bills. One taxpayer I spoke to really was on the mark when he said that he thinks most people just don’t plan ahead to be ready for Apr. 15 every year. “I think part of the problem is people just put it off and don’t do enough to get ready to pay their taxes so it’s not that much of a surprise,” he told me. To help financially strapped taxpayers, the IRS just released several new plans making it easier to keep up with your tax bills. One such program is the distressed taxpayer plan, which allows taxpayers to negotiate repaying their tax bills and can postpone the IRS’s collection process. It allows more flexibility for missed payments, rather than automatically placing delinquent taxpayers into immediate default proceedings. It also takes into account current home values in negotiating payments based on taxpayers’ total assets. Here is something else to remember. If you are getting a refund, most tax experts recommend against paying anything extra for those refund anticipation loans. If you E-File and have your refund direct-deposited into your bank account, the IRS says you can get your money back in less than two weeks, if not sooner.

Officer honored for solving crimes and making arrests BY SANDY KRAMER The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) has announced that Officer Yuri Millan was awarded the departmental Exceptional Service Award and selected Distinguished Officer of the Month for March 2009. Officer Millan has been a member of the department since 2003 and currently is assigned to the Midwest District. On Aug. 25, 2008, police units were dispatched to the Walgreens store located at 10690 SW 40 St. reference a motorcycle “carjacking.” Upon discovering that the motorcycle was equipped with Lo-Jack, Officer Millan responded with Lo-Jack units to locate the signal. Utilizing a house-to-house search, the signal was triangulated to 9371 SW 26 St. The owner gave consent to a search that yielded the stolen motorcycle, which had been concealed under a tarp in the backyard. After several interviews and lineups, one of the occupants of the house was identified as the subject and charged with armed carjacking. At approximately 3:08 a.m. on Sept. 24, 2008, Officer Millan was patrolling the residential area near SW 40th Street and 102nd Avenue and observed a 1996 green Chevy Lumina moving slowly. He followed the vehicle at a distance as it circled the neighborhood a few times before coming out to SW 40th Street. As the vehicle headed eastbound, it made several evasive movements and ran a red light at SW 87th Avenue. Officer Millan made a traffic stop of the vehicle and in the rear seat saw a car stereo, which appeared to have been removed recently from a vehicle, along with a screwdriver and a lock removal tool with a door handle assembly still attached. The two occupants gave conflicting stories as to why they were in the area, where they were headed, and to whom the radio belonged. As he conducted his investigation, a call for a vehicle burglary was dispatched. When officers arrived, it was discovered that the property in the car belonged to the victim of the vehicle burglary. The two subjects were charged with burglary and $1,200 worth of property was recovered. On Sept. 30, 2008, at approximately 4 a.m., Officer Millan observed a vehicle leaving the La Fuente Hotel, located at 7470 SW Eighth St., and traveling on the sidewalk. He followed the vehicle for a few blocks as

it traveled on the road and then again drove on the sidewalk. Officer Millan initiated a traffic stop and the driver exited the vehicle and began to walk away. When he approached, the driver ran away. Officer Millan established a perimeter and located the subject after a short search. As the perimeter was being established, a call for a carjacking was dispatched from the La Fuente Hotel. Subsequent investigation revealed that the driver had just carjacked the victim from his vehicle when Officer Millan observed him leaving the hotel. The subject was charged with carjacking and aggravated battery, and the vehicle was returned to the victim. On Nov. 3, 2008, Officer Millan was dispatched to the area of SW 87th Avenue and 21st Street in reference to a group of males looking into vehicles in a residential area. He located the men and, as he was detaining them, Officer Millan saw a bag with suspect marijuana hanging from a pocket of one of the men. Backup units held the group for further investigation as Officer Millan conducted an area canvass. He found the suspects’ vehicle, which was parked several blocks from where they were located. Visible from the outside of the vehicle was a car stereo on the front seat. Officer Millan also discovered two vehicles that had been burglarized in the

area. Subsequently, the subjects were charged with burglary to several vehicles. The property from the vehicles was recovered. While Officer Millan was working a burglary detail on Nov. 14, 2008, a burglary to a vehicle, with the subject’s description, was dispatched at 9430 SW 30 Terr. Officer Millan responded and conducted an area canvass where he saw a male matching the description. The subject was on a bicycle and had a car Bluetooth device and loose change in his possession. Consequent to a lineup and further investigation, he was identified by a witness as the same person who burglarized the victim’s vehicle. Officer Millan conducted an additional area canvass and located two more vehicles, which the subject later confessed to burglarizing. On Dec. 1, 2008, Officer Millan responded to the area of SW 67th Avenue and Eighth Street, where units were trying to locate a Lo-Jack signal from a recently stolen vehicle. Officer Millan located it parked inside an open

garage of the Motel Presidente, located at 6891 SW Eighth Street, with a man standing by the vehicle. Officer Millan approached and told him to stay where he was. At the same time, he observed an open hotel room with three other subjects. As Officer Millan questioned the man, a camera was found inside the vehicle with photos of the subjects present at the scene. All subjects were detained and Officer Millan obtained consent for a search of the room. He recovered two small baggies with cocaine and a large bag containing what appeared to be burglary tools, including several handheld radios, gloves, and prying tools. The subjects were charged with auto theft and possession of cocaine. During this period, Officer Millan effected 48 arrests, including 16 felonies; issued 127 traffic citations, and initiated 66 Field Interview Reports. His demonstrated pattern of consistent and meticulous policing techniques has resulted in these excellent statistics.

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, FEBRUARY 3, 2009 - A top official at the state Office of Insurance Regulation said Tuesday night that regulators believe the private insurance market could absorb potentially all of the 900,000-plus property insurance policies that would be shed if State Farm were allowed to pull out of Florida as it has proposed to do. State Farm has proposed a twoyear pull out, and company officials told a House Insurance Committee Tuesday that they couldn't say precisely what might be able to change the company's mind, given its precarious financial situation. The company was recently turned down by state regulators for a 47 percent rate increase and company officials told legislators that it can't bear any more losses in the property market in Florida, given the state's hurricane record, regulatory environment and a recent increase in the amount of discounts that customers can get for stormhardening their homes.

THE MIAMI HERALD, JANUARY 27, 2009 - Saying its finances are weakened, State Farm's Florida unit wants to get out of the business of property insurance in the state. The company, Florida’s largest private insurer of homes and condos with 1.2 million policies, wants to keep only auto insurance, it said in a statement. Other State Farm units would still sell life, health and other financial services, it said in a statement. Under State Farm’s proposal, it would phase out of the property insurance business over two years, giving existing customers time to find new coverage. If State Farm’s plan is approved by state insurance regulators, that means it will no longer write the full range of property policies, including homeowners, condo, renters, boaters, mobile home, business property, commercial liability and commercial marine. The Duran family, a New Generation of hearing Starting a new company may be a daunting task for some, but not for the brother and sister team of Dr. Joseph K. Duran and Yvette Duran Someillan. They combined their vast knowledge and experience in the field of Audiology and hearing aids and embarked on a new business venture. Before receiving a doctorate degree in Audiology at the University of South Florida, Joseph Duran started his work with hearing loss and hearing aids at a very young age at Caribe Hearing Aids in Miami. While studying at Miami Dade College he worked as a Hearing Instrument Specialist and realized his passion for the field. He felt the need to continue his studies and found that Audiology, encompassing hearing and balance disorders, brought him the satisfaction he was looking for. It afforded him the opportunity to not only help patients with hearing loss, but also those suffering from dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance. Joseph had the opportunity to sharpen his skills as an audiologist at the University of Miami Ear Institute. His sister Yvette, who also started working at Caribe Hearing Aids at a young age, “did not think I would spend most of my life in this industry.” But while studying Accounting at Florida International University (FIU) she also studied for and received a license to sell and dispense hearing aids. After graduating from FIU she decided to continue working at Caribe and applied her accounting knowledge to the administrative side of the business. Naturally, when the Duran’s decided to open their own business, New Generation Hearing Centers, in January of this year, they divided the responsibilities. Yvette is in charge of operations, while Joseph attends to their patients. Both married with children, they believe that owning their own business allows them to continue their careers while, at the same time affording them time to spend with their families. Together, the team has accumulated 30 years of experience in both Audiology and the Hearing Aid industry, making them well prepared when they opened the doors of their new office at 3431 SW 107th Avenue in Miami, Florida in January 2009. Choosing a place to start was not a problem. Joseph and Yvette both grew up in this area of Miami. They both went to Rockway Elementary, and while Yvette continued her education at St. Brendan High School, Joseph attended Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. Born of Cuban parents, Dr. Duran and his sister Yvette are fluent in Spanish and English. “This is our home, we know the people and we understand their needs”, commented Joseph Duran, 32, Co-President and Director of Audiology of New Generation Hearing Centers. Although Dr. Duran does not specialize in children under the age of ten, he has patients up to the age of 106. Recently, he had to look for solutions for a

patient who suddenly (within seconds) lost his hearing in one ear because of a displaced shot while cleaning a firearm. Another patient lost hearing in one ear while scuba diving. “Luckily he came to see me right away, so I was able to have him begin treatment with an Otolaryngologist getting him on the road to recovery,” stated Dr. Duran. Based on their years of involvement with the sale of hearing instruments, the Duran’s have been able to keep their finger on the pulse of any and all new technological advancements in their field. They are able to empathize with their patients and understand how hearing loss, when untreated, can lead to other health related problems such as stress, fatigue, decreased self-confidence, and in extreme cases, depression.

The transition from analog to digital technology in the last 10 years has completely changed the menu for hearing aids. “Now our patients have more options,” affirmed Yvette Duran Someillan, 38, CoPresident and Director of Operations of New Generation Hearing Centers. Since the appearance of digital hearing aids, open fittings, and Bluetooth compatibility (technology that allows for cordless communication between hearing aids and cell phone or other electronic devices), many people with hearing difficulties feel more comfortable wearing them. Digital hearing aids, in comparison with analog systems, are extremely flexible in terms of programming. Since they come equipped with computer chips, environmental sounds can be adjusted automatically. Wearing a hearing aid is no longer cumbersome or a nuisance, hearing aids are now discreet and can be fit to suit any lifestyle. “That has allowed me to offer made-to-order hearing aids to my patients,” explained Dr. Duran. For example, one of his patients is a teacher and reported difficulty hearing the students sitting in the last row of his class. Dr. Duran programmed his hearing aids to allow this patient to hear those students by simply pressing a button. When not in class, the patient only has to touch the same button again for the hearing aid to function properly in other situations. New Generation Hearing Centers offers a wide range of hearing aid types and styles with prices starting at $500. Most of the hearing aid cost is generally paid for by the patient since most insurance plans will only cover a portion of the total price. More advanced models begin at $1,300. A majority of the hearing aids available have been designed by large manufacturers, one of them being well-known, Swiss-made Phonak Hearing Instruments. It is because of the many years in the field of audiology that both Dr. Duran and his sister felt secure in their ability to achieve success with this business venture, even in this unstable economy. How to Choose a Phar macy BY MIKE DUNN When choosing a pharmacy for your family, there should be other considerations aside from a convenient location or even cost. After all, there is much at stake in selecting the right pharmacy and the right pharmacist. This is a person that you, your spouse and your children may be dealing with for many years. Your pharmacist, first and foremost, should be someone you know and trust. According to the apharmacist.org Web site, you should give as much consideration to choosing your pharmacist as you do to choosing a doctor. Pharmacists are health care professionals specializing in medicines and their appropriate use. Because of this, your pharmacist plays an important role in your personal health care and the health care of your family. The importance of assessing personal service in selecting a pharmacist is considered critical by most patients. In that regard, here are some questions to ponder: How accessible is the pharmacist? Is he or she easy to talk to and willing to hear your concerns? During what hours is the pharmacist available to answer your questions?

It is important to choose one pharmacist with whom you can establish an ongoing relationship. Also, by choosing one pharmacy, a complete record of the medicines you take is in one place, making them easier to coordinate and manage. Your pharmacist can alert you to possible drug interactions - particularly if you take a number of different medications - help you track refills on important prescriptions, and provide any necessary detail on short notice. It is wise to consider your entire family’s pharmacy needs. Often, a pharmacist can help you with special circumstances, such as when you are taking care of an elderly relative. If you have aging parents that live nearby, you might ask, for example, if it is possible to deliver prescriptions to their home and send the bill to you. Not all pharmacists and/or pharmacies provide the same services. All pharmacies are required to meet minimum standards. Most, however, offer services and conveniences beyond the minimum requirements. When choosing a pharmacist and/or pharmacy, you should evaluate your needs and make a selection to meet those needs. Here are some other suggested questions to consider: Does the pharmacist take time to answer

your questions in a manner that you understand? Is the pharmacy open during hours that fit your schedule? Does the pharmacy deliver? If so, are there restrictions or additional charges? If there is an emergency, does the pharmacy provide after-hours service or a special emergency telephone number? Are charge accounts available? Does the pharmacy handle the drugs you expect to be taking? There may be a higher cost for additional services or conveniences such as delivery, charge accounts, and emergency service. Real value, however, comes not only from the price of your prescriptions, but from having your specific needs met at a fair price. It is also very helpful to become thoroughly familiar with your insurance benefits as they concern your prescriptions. For example, some prescription benefits plans will only pay for the dispensing of a certain days supply of your medication. If your physician issues a prescription for a larger supply of medication, the pharmacy will have to decrease your quantity dispensed or your insurance company will not pay for the medication. Obviously, since your physician is issuing the prescriptions, it is important to advise your

physician concerning any prescription restrictions under your prescription benefits plan. Not every pharmacy will accept your prescription drug card. A pharmacy must sign a contract to provide services for each prescription benefit plan. The owner of the pharmacy must review each contract and decide which insurance plans the pharmacy will accept. If the pharmacy does not accept your prescription card, the pharmacy probably does not have a signed contract with your health insurance provider. In some cases, pharmacy owners may take steps to add your prescription benefit plan if asked to do so. Once you weigh all the factors and choose a pharmacy, it is strongly recommended that you use this pharmacy for all of your prescriptions needs. This allows you to receive the greatest benefit from the “screening” for drug interactions, etc., by your pharmacist since this one pharmacy has all of your prescription drug records.

How to Choose a Dentist BY MIKE DUNN A good first step in choosing a dentist is to ask neighbors, friends and coworkers about the family dentist they have chosen. This is especially helpful if you are moving to a new community and haven’t had time to become acclimated to your surroundings. If there is one dentist who is mentioned frequently and you like what you are hearing, the next step is to schedule a visit to meet him or her and get acquainted. The purpose is to see if you feel comfortable with this person and his dental practices. After all, the dentist you choose will be working on your teeth and the teeth of your spouse and children for possibly a long time. Ask the prospective dentist about his philosophy of health care. You might be surprised at the answer you receive. Ask about fees, payment plans, and insurance coverage. You know what your financial situation is, so it is proper for you to initiate the discussion. How did the dentist and his or her staff respond to you? Was there a professional atmosphere in the office? Did the dentist and staff take the time to listen to your concerns and seem genuinely interested? A dentist who seems too rushed or too busy to take the time to get acquainted may not have the time to address your personal needs and concerns down the road and is probably not the one you want. Something else to consider is the size of the dentist office. This isn’t always the case, but sometimes a dentist with a large practice and a large staff has little time to devote to individual patients. He or she is too busy working and keeping up with the cost of the practice! Large dental practices are more likely than smaller ones to hurry patients through without taking the time for proper examinations or thought to what is actually best for the patient. First and foremost, you want a dentist who has your best tooth care and treatment in mind. You can also make evaluations about a prospective dentist after your initial examination. Did the dentist take the time to do a thorough exam so that no problems or potential problems are missed? A thorough dental examination includes not only inspection of the teeth and gums, but also of the tongue, lips, inside of the cheek, palate, and the skin of the face and neck, plus feeling the neck for abnormal lymph nodes and enlargement of the thyroid gland. A good

dentist is also on the alert for periodontal (gum) disease. Did the dentist check for signs and symptoms of periodontal disease such as bleeding from the gums and/or pockets of decay? After the exam, did the dentist establish goals for your long-term care? In March of 1997, Consumers Research provided a number of questions for consumers to ask themselves after they have received treatment from a dentist. These help determine the level of the dentist’s skill. Here are the questions: How does your bite feel? Is any of the dental work irritating your gum? Does the treated tooth look like a tooth? Does dental floss or your tongue catch on the tooth? Did the dentist take time to polish your fillings? Do you feel pain when drinking hot or cold liquids? Was any debris left in your mouth after treatment? Does the dentist use a water spray to cool your teeth while drilling? Other things to watch out for in evaluating a prospective dentist are an emphasis on mass production rather than quality care; an emphasis on cosmetic procedures and onevisit comprehensive treatments; and the routine use of intravenous sedation. Your dentist should be someone in whose judgment you trust. You are entrusting to the dentist the long-term tooth care of your family. The spinal cord in the body is being linked to pretty much your overall health and fitness. For example, if you are having a problem with depression, a pinched nerve can cause it. Same for sinusitis, fatigue, migraines, and so many more symptoms that most doctors just prescribe drugs for. Chiropractic medicine is being looked at more and more for help with common ailments. This is starting to take trend due to the unnecessary drugs most doctors prescribe which may help the symptoms, but do not take care of the underlying problem. In research, it is found that your spinal cord is the traffic point for all your nerves. If one of them becomes pinched, or blocked, then you will begin to experience different types of ailments. So how does one go about finding the right Chiropractor for them? Well here are a few tips to help

you when shopping around for one. First, when choosing a chiropractor, consider what you are looking for. Some chiropractors only treat most aches, pains, and serious injuries, while others are interested in constant care with rou-

If you have a chiropractor that only sees you when you are in pain, and you are looking for more of a permanent solution, not just a relief from symptoms, then try looking towards a holistic chiropractor. These chiropractors will give you a complete work up, from doing a spinal reading, to x-rays, to a full medical questionnaire and history. During these visits, the chiropractor will first meet with you to see where your trouble areas are and begin to address these areas. He/she will also begin to formulate a routine treatment plan to help readjust any spinal shifts and realign your neck as well to keep the nerves from pinching and ending in medical symptoms. Now that you know what type of chiropractor you are looking for, begin asking around (ask friends, neighbors, co workers, and family members) if they recommend any one that fits in your requirements. However, remember, just because your mom may love her chiropractor, it doesn’t mean that he/she will be a good fit for you. After receiving your recommendations, call the office and ask some questions on their policies and areas pertaining to the type of care you would like to receive. First impressions are always the most important, so if you do not feel like they will best complete your needs, then keep shopping around. Another thing to remember, is that most chiropractors accept insurance, so make sure yours will be compatible with them prior to setting your appointment. Some chiropractors offer free consultations and x-rays when starting up as a new patient. Use this time to ask more questions of your chiropractor and describe to him/her what you hope to receive from their care. A lot of chiropractors will be upfront and let you know if they can provide the type of care you are looking for and will even refer you to another if they cannot. Make sure to check on licenses and school credits prior to allowing the chiropractor to begin any adjustments on you. A good rule of thumb is to make sure they have been in their own practice for at least two years prior to becoming their patient. You don’t want to go see an intern that just graduated from his/her schooling and is looking for fresh meat to begin practicing on. A good chiropractor, as any other doctor will listen to you and work to meet your health goals and treatment needs. During your first visit, your chiropractor

LET’S TALK CARS If you’re one of the many who liked the Nissan Altima Sedan, then you’ll love the sporty two-door Coupe version. It’s smaller and lighter, and when you slide behind the wheel it delivers a much sportier ride. The Altima Coupe was a new model for 2008, so the changes for 2009 are minimal, including revised 18-inch alloy wheels on V-6 equipped models, with larger 235/45R18 tires. Automatic door locks have been added to all models and the front grille has been given highgloss paint. It’s available in four models — 2.5 S 6MT, 2.5 S CVT, 3.5 SE 6MT and 3.5 SE CVT — and comes with either the VQseries 3.5-liter V-6 or the 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine. Both are offered with either a six-speed manual transmis-

sion or Nissan’s advanced Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). The Altima Coupe is sleek and sporty, with an aggressive stance, bold shoulders and a sensual design. It differs from the Sedan with a shorter wheelbase (105.3-inches), shorter overall length (182.5 inches) and lower height (55.3 inches). And, of course, it has two fewer doors. The two cars share only a common hood, with all other panels, grille, headlights and rear combination lights unique to the Altima Coupe. A pair of chrome exhaust tips and unique taillights give the Coupe a distinctive rear presence. The Altima Coupe rides on Nissan’s new advanced “D” platform that was introduced on the 2007 Altima. Nissan engineers developed the new platform with the idea of making the Altima one of the best performing front-wheel drive vehicles on the market. They have tweaked it for the Coupe to virtually eliminate torque steer. At the same time, the new rear multilink independent suspension design separates the rear shocks and springs for reduced friction, while the shocks
