New park’s opening will be grand indeed BY GARY ALAN RUSE he Village of Palmetto Bay’s newest park will celebrate its formal grand opening on Friday, May 15, and everyone is invited to attend the special event. Ludovici Park, located at 17641 Old Cutler Rd., which contains the new library and community center, will launch its official celebration at 5 p.m. with special musical performances and light refreshments. The party is expected to run until 8 or 8:30 p.m. Fanny Carmona, acting director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, is looking forward to the event. “We have performances from different groups,” Carmona said. “We have a small quintet from Southwood Middle School. We also have the Robert Morgan Jazz Band, and a group called Devine Voices from Coral Reef High School. We will also have the Counting Days band from Christ Fellowship Church here in Palmetto Bay, which also performed at the annual Village Celebration picnic.” Carmona said that the quintet likely will perform near the main entrance as people are walking into the park, and that the

Special thanks to those who made Earth Day very successful BY MAYOR EUGENE P. FLINN JR.
This is Part 1 of a twopart Earth Day Celebration report. Part 1 deals with our fun and educational activities. In Part 2, I will report on the substantive changes to our village that are designed to encourage going green. Part 2 will run in a future Palmetto Bay News. Earth Day comes just once a year, on Apr. 22, but the Village of Palmetto Bay celebrated Earth Day 2009 over a nineday period with many partners and sponsors. Our work continues to change the way we live and make every day Earth Day.

Miami-Dade County Commissioners Carlos A. Gimenez and Katy Sorenson plant a tree outside the Stephen P. Clark Center in downtown Miami on Apr. 22 in celebration of Earth Day. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY JUAN CARLOS FLORES Miami-Dade Commissioner Carlos A. Gimenez joined Mayor Carlos Alvarez and Commissioner Katy Sorenson to celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday, Apr. 22, at the Stephen P. Clark Center (SPCC) in downtown Miami. Commissioner Gimenez was on hand to witness the unveiling of the county’s new fuel-efficient hybrid waste collection vehicle, which is being tested on two collection routes. The vehicle, brought to fruition by the efforts of Miami-Dade’s Solid Waste Management (SWM) and General Services Administration (GSA), is a hybrid with a unique energy recovery system that uses stored hydraulic energy rather than diesel fuel to power the truck as it makes house-to-house stops for waste collection. Major benefits of
the hybrid vehicle include a reduction in diesel fuel consumption and cleaner air emissions. SWM is the first municipal solid waste agency in the country to be given the opportunity to test this hybrid vehicle in its waste collection operation. “This hybrid truck is just one of many steps the county is taking in order to be more environmentally conscious,” Commissioner Gimenez said. “We live in a beautiful community and government officials and residents alike need to do all they can to preserve it.” To close the event, Commissioners Gimenez and Sorenson also took the opportunity to plant a tree at Government Center’s pavilion. To learn more about the county’s green initiatives and what you can do to “go green,” visit Miami-Dade’s website at <www.miamidade.gov/earthdade>.

PARK, from page 1 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– EARTH DAY, other groups will perform onstage at the facility’s amphitheater, which is expected to serve in the future as an additional outdoor area for lectures, workshops, and children’s activities. Carmona said that there also will be an outdoor art exhibition from Palmer Trinity School which will be set up in the open area and that they are counting on the fine weather that usually graces such events in the village. Part of the evening’s festivities will be a special presentation honoring Ludovici family members for whom the park is named. There will be appetizers and water and sodas for those attending, and a tour of the new community center with its striking view of Biscayne Bay and the park. Village officials stress that the grand opening is for the park and not the new library, which, although complete in its
building construction and finishing, still awaits the shelving, books and furniture that will be provided by the Miami-Dade County Public Library System. “Parking is available in the lot south of the library building,” Carmona said. “There will also be additional parking at the Palmetto Bay Village Center, which is near the park, and we’ll be using the I-Bus to shuttle people back and forth.” Those attending will be able to see for the first time the Romero Britto artwork that recently has been placed in the turnaround area at the front of the library — a large statue of a bookworm, appropriately enough. “This park will be the perfect spot for visitors and residents to come and relax, read a book under the gazebo and enjoy the big green view,” Carmona said. For additional information concerning the park and the event, please contact Village Hall at 305-259-1234.

Palmetto Bay actually started Earth conservation activities with a tree planting held on the third Friday of January in honor of Florida’s Arbor Day. We took another step on Apr. 6, joining with South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), when I declared April as “Water Conservation Month.” Palmetto Bay’s Earth Day activities were truly exciting. Events were, literally, launched Apr. 18 with guided kayak trips, sponsored by Tropical Audubon Society (TAS). Special thanks to Laura Reynolds (executive director), Beth Kibler (Palmetto Bay resident), and Gabe Perez from TAS. This event generated a lot of buzz and enthusiasm. Three separate groups made trips that day and all slots were filled with advance reservations. On Monday, future community leaders from Alexander Montessori School and their headmaster James McGhee rode the I-Bus, turning it into the Magical Musical Litter Bus tour, courtesy of Mr. McGhee’s guitar and the kids’ voices. The children participated in a community clean up. Thanks to Ludovici and Ludovici for serving lunch and to Golden Rule Seafood for providing the clean-up supplies. Earth Day and National Library Week came together at Coral Reef Library, with council members reading environmental themed books to students from the Village Pines School. Thanks to our partners at the Miami-Dade County Public Library System. We look forward to events being held at our new Palmetto Bay branch library in the future, where many of our residents will visit this library via bicycles to read and use free WiFi in the surrounding Ludovici Park. Along with the TAS and MDPLS, we also partnered with both public and private schools within our village. We released over 15,000 lady bugs with the students of Perrine, Howard, and Coral Reef elementaries, as well as Winhold Montessori and Alexander Montessori schools. Though it may sound like a significant increase in the native pest control population, my goal is to up the ante next year to 26,000 ladybugs, one for every resident in our community. The celebration continued with Movie Night at Coral Reef Park. Hundreds of residents viewed the family-friendly Bee Movie and were entertained by “Willie the Bee Man.” Willie is a bee removal specialist who also speaks extensively on the importance of bees to the environment. Early the next day, Apr. 25, the Neighborhood Bike Ride provided a fun event to enjoy the natural surroundings of the Old Cutler Road bike path and Palmetto Bay’s Deering Estate. This ride was held under the direction of the Palmetto Bay Policing Unit Bike Patrol and residents and long-time bike enthusi-
asts Eric Tullberg and Bill Best. We passed by the Ludlam Pine Rocklands, Deering’s Chinese Bridge, and enjoyed the natural beauty of our village. We also discussed environmental issues pertaining to the area and the progress of the CERP project. Most thought our events ended Saturday, until I was solicited by our Dog Park partners, Friends Forever Rescue (FFR) to partake in an impromptu Dog Park cleanup early Sunday morning. Thank you Dee Chess and the volunteers at FFR. We thank all the people, organizations, schools and other governmental agencies who have partnered with Palmetto Bay; including the administration, parents, teachers, staff and students of the MiamiDade Public Schools; Miami-Dade Public Library System; Miami-Dade County, including the M-D Parks Department; South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD); Alexander Montessori School; Winhold Montessori School; Green Mobility Network; sponsors including the law offices of Ludovici and Ludovici, and Golden Rule Seafood. These events could not have been held without the assistance of the dedicated team members of the Village Manager’s Office, MDPD Palmetto Bay Policing Unit, Public Works, and Parks and Recreation team members. Special thanks go to our PIO Bill Kress. Next year, we look forward to even more opportunities. We will have a Palmetto Bay Garden Club up and running by then, both for Arbor Day and Earth Day — and for year round activities, and our Tree Board will have been in place one full year by then. Ideas continue to come in from interested residents. Let’s continue to hear your ideas for new events. Email, call, or speak with me, staff or other members of the council with your suggestions. I am proud that Palmetto Bay recognizes not just one Earth Day, but many events over nine days of Earth Day celebration. By appreciating the Earth and by knowing how it is changing, we can make responsible life decisions — and enlighten our children to do the same. As we move forward, we can all continue to work to make every day Earth Day. I thank you all for such exciting and progressive times in this positive and progressive village. It seems like everyone is all a-twitter
Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR
AROUND TOWN These days, the new toy on the internet, joining Facebook and MySpace, is something called “Twitter.com.” The earlier social networking sites, essentially an outgrowth of bulletin boards, allowed for a casual once or more times a week posting of news, topics of conversation or discussions about matters of interest to a group of friends. Never mind that more and more instead of the teen social groups they were initially intended for, the social sites are being taken over by businesses, rock bands, public relations people and, of course, sexual predators. They did at least have a semblance of purpose and serve as an aid to the communication of ideas. Twitter (and aren’t its members at all concerned that they are going to be referred to as “twits”...?) is the next logical, or is it illogical, extension—a texting fed moment by moment stream of consciousness spewing-out of whatever folks are doing. Now there probably are some intelligent folks out there who are using it for a semi-practical purpose, but from what we’ve seen, a lot of it is just nonsense that is boring beyond belief. One local member, whose name we won’t mention, posted the message “it’s raining here.” Golly, wow! Another that we know of is so paranoid that he’s constantly checking the postings of a few people in particular out of fear they might be saying something about him. Hmmmm...talk about insecurity. Some twitterers are public officials,
who are perhaps, God bless ‘em, just trying to look hip and with it (does that ever work?) but most are just average folks. What’s disturbing is the amount of time being devoted to these constant postings. Hey folks, here’s a thought—if your lives are so devoid of something important to do that you can fritter away your hours twittering, they maybe you should just toss the technology and spend a few hours doing volunteer work at a local hospital, nursing home or animal shelter, where you can actually make a difference by doing something meaningful. And by the way, talking about something meaningful that the bad economy has put a crimp in, there was an important film about school violence that was made locally, called “Hidden Rage,” produced by Miami-based independent film company, The God of Moses Entertainment. With its message about recognizing the warning signs of Columbine-type school shootings and helping students and parents see the consequences of ignoring those signs, in a family-accessible format, a lot of people volunteered to work in the film for free, including State Representative Julio Robaina, South Miami Mayor Horace Feliu, many students and school officials, parents and others in the community. Filming is complete and editing and other post-production work is at least 95 percent finished, and premieres in a number of cities around the country are pending, with one slated for South Miami’s Shops at Sunset AMC Theater complex. Today’s economy, though, has bogged down the effort so close to completion, with posters and other things
needed to wrap things up and get the message out there. To find out more, the movie website, with a link to its trailer, is found at this address: www.hiddenrage.com (click on “news”) and the producers, a faith based company, are at: www.thegodofmoses.com. Sponsors and donations are being sought. And don’t forget, folks—shop locally
and give the small, independent merchants and restaurant owners a chance. Thought of the Day Beware the fury of a patient man. — John Dryden Gary Alan Ruse contributed to this column. Got any tips? Contact me at 305-6697355, ext. 249, or send e-mail to <Michael@communitynewspapers.com>.

Legislators trying to re-amend classroom size amendment R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY The year was 2002. Thousands of registered Florida voters donated tens of thousands of dollars and many thousands of hours to get a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would limit the number or students that could sit in a public school classroom. They were successful. The amendment passed and the limitations were to take effect by 2010. That was before the recession hit Florida. That was before unemployment in Florida almost hit 10 percent. Yet, that was the will of the people. Expensive as it might be to implement, it was the will of the people. Members of the Florida House and Senate want us to re-amend the Constitution removing what we just approved. The 2002 constitutional amendment wasn’t intended only for good financial times. It was passed to
allow teachers to relate to the needs of their students and assist them in obtaining an education. We didn’t want middle school students sitting in rooms that look like a lecture hall in some university where it is solely up to the student if he or she was to get an education. Now, rather than find the money to implement what the voters demanded, the Florida Legislature is attempting to place an amendment on the ballot revoking the 2002 amendment. It would seem that it is better for legislators to “kowtow” to their financial supporters than to “find” the needed dollars. I can hear their propaganda now. “Voters of Florida, support our new proposed constitutional amendment. We do not want to tax you to death in order to implement an unnecessary limit on classroom size. It is the parents’ responsibility to see that their kids get an education, not our responsibility to spend money that could be better spent on building jails, and building high speed railroads across the state.” Rep. Janet Adkins, a Republican from Fernandina Beach, is quoted as saying
VIEWPOINT that as a mom, she doesn’t think class size is [the] No. 1 indicator of a school’s success, but that parent involvement and discipline in the classroom are more important. Tell her story to the kids from one parent families who are spending every waking hour holding down several parttime jobs so he or she can put food on the table. Tell it to the teacher who is expected to maintain “discipline” in a room filled with dozens of children. I’ll bet Ms. Adkins would pull her two children out of a public school and quickly move them into a private school if that happened. Who knows, her kids might already be in private schools. I hope that the legislature realizes that they need 60 percent of voting Floridians to pass their amendment. They were so happy to “sell” that 60 percent amendment to the public; now it is
going to come back and bite them in the collective rear ends! Tallahassee, start taxing ostrich feed, start taxing skyboxes and start taxing the purchase of yachts. Start finding the money we need to survive! I guess we do have something to be happy about. We could live in the Republic of Texas, excuse me, I mean in the state of Texas, which first helped elect Obama to office and now is refusing to accept billions in federal stimulus money to supplement their educational needs.

Free stuff and real deals are available just for the asking
Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY I hear about a lot of good deals that are available all over the country and here’s one I wanted to pass along that could mean free supplies for your family. It comes from my CBS TV friends at KTVT in Dallas and it offers a helpful hint about all the free stuff companies will give-away to keep old customers and find new ones. Maggie Grayson has two little ones to clothe and feed, so she’s always on the lookout for new products she can try. She enjoys saving money, too, and says, “It certainly is great to try things out in sample sizes instead of buying a full size.” Consequently, she’s discovered that many companies are willing to give away free samples of baby products as a way to build brand loyalty. Maggie tells us, “Any company that you see online or any of your favorite companies, just go online. Contact their corporate office and say, ‘Hey, I would really like to check out your product.’” Sounds way too easy, but it has worked pretty well for her. She has received free samples of diapers, baby wipes, suntan lotion and household cleaners. She’s guessing it can save families hundreds of dollars a month. Maggie breaks into a big smile as she thinks about all the free stuff she’s gotten.
“We have diapers; we have toiletries, and we have wipes — and all of those products are available.” Tony Palmer is chief marketing officer of Kimberly Clark, which makes Huggies, Kleenex and many other popular brands. Palmer says the company gave away 15 million free samples last year and adds, “Our opportunity is to bring mothers into the Huggies family and let them use those wonderful products and know they really work.” Parents can sign up for free samples and coupons on the Huggies’ website. And that’s not all to which they may be entitled. Most pediatricians also offer free samples for giveaway, including pricier items like formula and medications. It turns out that “Enfamil” will send new parents a free insulated diaper bag filled with $250 in free gifts. And when you register with the company, they’ll send coupons and samples that are appropriate for your child’s age. And here’s another little tip: If you don’t get any help the first time you call or contact the company, try again a little bit later or on a different day. The response you get may depend on whom you talk to. And remember, the nicer you are on the phone, the better chance you may have a company extending a little “customer service” to one of their customers.
Watch Al Sunshine’s “4 Your Money” reports Monday-Friday on CBS4 beginning at noon.

Dadeland Mall playing host to ‘Mom’s Nite Out,’ May 7 BY ASHLEY SUGARMAN
“Nurturing the curiosity of young minds”
Dadeland Mall, one of Miami’s leading shopping destinations, will welcome three of the best talents that Miami has to offer for “National Mom’s Nite Out,” on May 7, the Thursday before Mother’s Day. The first nationally organized celebration of motherhood will pay tribute to moms while providing a great social networking opportunity with cooking demonstrations, a style presentation, complimentary wine and cheese samples by Winn-Dixie and more. CBS 4 News anchor Shannon Hori, renowned Chef Cindy Hutson and event designer and stylist Godfrey del Rio will participate in the evening. All attendees will enjoy special shopping benefits and giveaways, the chance to meet local businesses and a taste of Winn-Dixie with gourmet cheese and wine sampling. Hori will serve as the special guest host for “National Mom’s Nite Out” at Dadeland Mall. As a recent mother to fraternal twin boys, Colt and Cade, Hori will be celebrating her first Mother’s Day along with the event attendees. Hutson will present a live cooking demonstration showcasing a special recipe for all moms to enjoy. The coowner and award-winning chef at Ortanique on the Mile in Coral Gables, Hutson knows her way around the kitchen. Self-taught and internally motivated, Hutson focuses her culinary talents on fusion cooking, drawing inspiration from her travels to and from Jamaica. Del Rio will provide an interactive informal style presentation that will give moms the latest sensible fashion tips.
Pam Woodruff, Director
Cindy Hutson –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Crazy Pianos to open in Cocowalk on May 6 BY TINA MENDITTO Crazy Pianos, South Florida’s new dueling piano bar, restaurant, and late night entertainment venue, will debut in Coconut Grove on Wednesday, May 6. Located in the space formerly occupied by Cafe Tu Tu Tango in Cocowalk, 3015 Grand Ave., the opening of Crazy Pianos will mark the Netherlands-based company’s first entry into the United States. Crazy Pianos is the No. 1 piano bar in sales worldwide. With an existing location in Scheveningen, Holland, the company has strategic global expansion plans, which include the May opening in Coconut Grove with additional locations planned for London, Dubai, Paris, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and New York City. The top brass behind the restaurant concept and late night entertainment venue have invested more than $5 million in preparation for the grand opening including a half million dollars for the sound system alone and expansion of the space in Cocowalk from 6,000 to 7,000 square feet. The interior space consists of 100 percent Dutch made woodwork and finishes imported from the Netherlands. “Cocowalk is the perfect center to
launch the first Crazy Pianos in the United States,” said Jay Silbermann, managing director for Crazy Pianos. “We hope to make a significant contribution to Miami by featuring the top entertainers in the business. We have hired more than 150 staff members, each with their own distinct personality and style, to add to the flavor of what makes the Crazy Pianos brand unique.” The company only employs up-andcoming, multi-faceted entertainers from around the world whose focus is on the music. These high-energy individuals are able to sing and play the piano well, while engaging the audience by taking song
requests. In essence, the audience dictates the genre of music that will be played each evening and for how long. “We take the dueling pianos concept to a new level in world-class entertainment,” said Orin Sands, managing director of entertainment for Crazy Pianos. “We focus on bringing our guests the best musical variety and talent from around the globe, from our entertainers to our state-of-the-art sound system. Our entertainers specialize in a variety of musical genres including oldies and classic rock hits from the ’70s, ’80s, ‘90s, and today,” Sands concluded. “You name it, and they’ll play it — all until 3 a.m.”
The Crazy Pianos menu features a variety of moderately priced International and Americana, Pan Asian, and French-American bistro style cuisine prepared by executive chef John Bond. Specialty dishes include traditional style Peruvian Cerviche, Coconut Rum Glazed Mahi Mahi, Spinach Portobello Mushroom Ravioli, Tasmanian Salmon Bur Blanc, and Kobe Beef Sliders just to name a few. All entrees range from $10 to $30. There even is a Crazy Kids menu for the little ones with prices ranging from $5 to $6. Delectable desserts include Deep Fried Cheesecake consisting of melt-in-yourmouth original New York, Lemon, Chocolate Marble and Dulce de Leche deep fried in a flaky pastry tortilla served with chocolate and red raspberry sauce. There will be a full-service bar, where the bartenders are as much a part of the fun as the Crazy Pianos entertainers. Crazy Pianos is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. At 10 p.m., Crazy Pianos morphs into a late nightclub venue for adults 21 and older featuring live performances based on special requests from the audience. For more information on Crazy Pianos, please visit <www.crazypianos.com> or call 305-567-2462.

2009 Nissan Versa is America’s lowest-priced car Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS With a suggested retail price of $9,990, Nissan is billing its new 2009 Versa Sedan as the lowest-priced new car on the market in the United States. Nissan debuted the front-wheel drive Versa in the U.S. as a 2006 model and it has been a solid seller with consumers looking for fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance or roominess. It also has one of the highest standard horsepower/torque ratings and the largest interior in the entry-level segment, along with good quality, reliability and durability. Versa is built at Nissan’s Aguascalientes, Mexico, assembly plant (where the Sentra is made) and is available in three models in five-door Hatchback or four-door Sedan configurations: 1.8 S with four-speed automatic and 1.8 SL with Xtronic CVT.
All 2009 Versas feature a standard 122 hp, 16-valve, 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine and a choice of three transmissions — Nissan Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), four-speed electronically controlled automatic with overdrive or the standard six-speed manual gearbox. The automatic tranny combination delivers a pleasantly responsive performance, as well as 26 mpg around town and 34 mpg on the highway. You’ll get 27/33 mpg with the CVT transmission; 24/32 mpg with the four-speed automatic transmission; and 26/31 mpg with the sixspeed manual transmission. The Xtronic CVT, unlike conventional stepped gear automatics, operates as essentially “one gear” through use of a belt and two pulleys. By varying the working diameters of the two pulleys, the transmission eliminates the “steps” between gears, resulting in a smoother, more efficient operation by keeping the engine in its optimum power range under a variety of driving and load conditions. Both the Hatchback and Sedan ride on a 102.4-inch wheelbase and have short front and rear overhangs, dynamic styling with crisp body forms and long rooflines, large

halogen headlights, a signature Nissan grille and large taillights. Body-color front and rear bumpers and dual remote-controlled outside mirrors accent the exterior. A Sport Package (optional on the Versa Hatchback SL model) adds performance styling with a roof-mounted rear spoiler, lower body side sill extensions, unique front and rear fascia, and fog lights. On the inside, there’s a spacious cabin and a clean, simple, high-quality interior design that allows for comfort for all passengers. A wide, laterally oriented instrument panel emphasizes the car’s width, while the low center console flows freely toward the
rear. Both Sedan and Hatchback integrate convenient storage areas, including the center console, glove box, front doors and an in-dash CD storage compartment. Versa also comes with a laundry list of standard and available equipment, including Nissan Intelligent Key, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, XM Satellite Radio and Clarion speakers with a Rockford Fosgate-powered subwoofer.
