Two new special camps added this summer BY GARY ALAN RUSE esides the original and popular basic summer camp, the Village of Palmetto Bay launched a few years ago, there will be two new summer camp programs offered this year that sound unique and engaging for youngsters. The first is “Wilderness Investigation,” which will feature weekly themes as well as field trips and lessons. Brian Mealey, PhD, of the Institute of Wildlife Sciences, will conduct the camp sessions. Mealey is a resident of Palmetto Bay and is excited about the new camp. “We want to bring science to the kids in a real life setting and help make them more aware of nature,” Mealey said. “It’s informal science, outside of the classroom, and we’re trying to make it exciting. It will help the kids develop critical thinking.” Themed parts of the program will involve work with turtles, eagletracking techniques, measuring animals using the metric system, and even wilderness martial arts. “A lot of martial arts moves are based on the study of animal motions, so we’ll be teaching the kids how to observe animal behavior,” Mealey said. Field trips to a number of locations are planned, including Miami Science Museum, Miami Seaquarium, Fairchild Tropical Gardens, Jungle Island, Metrozoo, Everglades National Park and others. There also will be a camp for physically active kids called “Skate & Adventure,” which will feature skateboarding and bicycling sessions, in addition to other fun activities such as kite flying, field trips, and swimming. Miami launches ‘Buy, Play and Stay Local’ campaign

The program encourages residents to spend their money locally, while taking advantage of great deals. Spurred by the success of its Miami Spice Restaurant Month and Miami Spa Month programs, the GMCVB is partnering with seven chambers of commerce to offer special discounts on lodging, dining, shopping, arts and culture, boating/water sports, sightseeing and tours, business services and other local services. “There has never been a better time

BY LEE STEPHENS Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Miami-Dade Commission chair Dennis C. Moss, Commissioner Carlos Gimenez and Commissioner Natacha Seijas on May 22 unveiled a new water reclamation pilot plant at the South Dade Wastewater Treatment Plant. Attendees were able to see water that has been processed through various stages of treatment, including micro-filtration, reverse osmosis and disinfection via ultraviolet light and peroxide. “Providing clean water is one of the most basic and important services the county provides,” Mayor Alvarez said. “It is a service that is directly used by residents and visitors each and every day.
That is why projects like the High Level Disinfection at the South Dade Wastewater Treatment Plant are so important to our stewardship of our natural resources.” Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department officials also provided an update on the progress of the 14 HighLevel Disinfection projects which will allow large-scale water recycling to take place. The project, which began more than a year ago, is making progress, creating hundreds of construction jobs and protecting the environment. Once this reclaimed water project is complete, it will recharge the county’s groundwater with approximately 23 million gallons of reclaimed water every day.

Jones, daughter of Judy and Charlie Jones of Palmetto Bay, has graduated from Michigan Technological University. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences Summa Cum Laude. At the graduation ceremony she wore five cords representing four honorary societies of which she is a member and her Summa Cum Laude achievement. She also wore a sash indicating her study abroad, in Finland. While at Michigan Tech she taught chemistry to students majoring in that subject and represented her school and various campus organizations in a variety of settings. She plans to continue her studies there and enter medical school next year. Our hat’s off to you, Melissa, for your accomplishments and for making your mom and dad proud. ally know how to bowl to have a good time. Our time went something like this: Throw or bounce or roll that ball down the lane without it hopping over to another lane and try to knock down those white pins at the end of your lane and then have a drink, a little calamari, and go bowl again without it going into the gutter. And then too, to make sure that we didn’t make total fools of ourselves, we would cheer each other on, no matter where that ball went. It took a while to get the swing of things, but consistent none of us were except that we had a wonderful time, especially since this was the first double date with our daughter and I’m sure we did okay by her. And by the way, they are a very handsome couple too. The service we got from the staff at Splitsville, from the moment we walked in the door, was exceptional. From the greeters at the front door, to the shoe ladies, the waitresses, to the manager, Scott, all did a great job. And by way, the
computer screen to get your game going is so simple that even a cave man (like me) can do it. Over all, Splitsville gets an A+. So, folks, there you have it for this week and if there is anyone in Palmetto Bay that you’d like to thank, whether at a retail store or restaurant, at Village Hall or just a friend or neighbor, please do it. South Florida’s Tri-Rail derailed by Florida Legislature R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY We had a good thing going in South Florida. Thousands of cars were kept off the highways as travelers took to the train to commute through Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Every year more and more travelers took Tri-Rail as their form of transportation. Now, thanks to the Florida Legislature, the trains will run less frequently during the coming year, and the year after, not at all. The Tri-Rail board recently voted to cut service from 50 to 30 train trips a day and to eliminate weekend and holiday runs. Also, without additional funding, the whole operation will be closed down by early 2011. Adding insult to injury the federal government will demand the return of $256 million given the state to add a parallel set of train tracks that was
designed to make the runs more efficient, not having to stop for trains coming in the other direction. Why the cuts in Tri-Rail funding? The answer is simple. Our Florida Legislature would rather cut service, thwarting a positive move in mass transportation, than have the guts to find the money needed to keep the trains rolling. Incredibly the legislature wanted to fund a mid-state, cross-state commuter train that was projected to have a far, far lower ridership than South Florida’s Tri-Rail. Fortunately for Florida taxpayers that move failed in the legislative process. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, running short on funds to finance their county operations, notified Tri-Rail that they were being forced to cut back on their contributions to the system. With greatly reduced county funding and the absence of state funding in the future, the $9 million funding shortfall places the future of Tri-Rail in doubt. Tri-Rail came into existence in 1989 offering an alternate form of transportation during the reconstruction of Interstate 95. Since 1989 the system has
VIEWPOINT enjoyed ever-increasing use. Ridership has increased from 7,500 a day in 2005 to about 14,000 a day in 2009. Now its future is in doubt. If every rider is forced to use his or her auto for transportation, we will see 14,000 more cars on the road each business day. Miami-Dade and Broward counties recently announced that they will be inaugurating an inter-county bus system as early as this coming January. The buses will run between the counties using the express lanes on Interstate 95. This is both good news and bad news. The good news is that there will be some form of inter-county public transportation. The bad news is that the legislature might use this as an excuse to end discussions on creating a dedicated funding system for Tri-Rail. It is ironic that a recent Miami Herald contained an insert from the county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) telling the community about
“Transportation for a New Century.” The publication tells us that the multimillion-dollar Miami Intermodal Center (MIC), where buses, trains, cabs, car rentals and private cars will all meet to provide easy access to the airport, contains a terminal for Tri-Rail. The transportation hub, currently under construction around the existing Tri-Rail tracks at a cost of $1.7 billion, includes a terminal for Tri-Rail that might not be in existence when the Intermodal Center opens. How poorly our elected officials plan and spend the taxpayers’ money. Anyone want to buy a like-new train?

Shop sells name brand clothes at low prices BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD Months ago, Jungle Jimbo’s was an indoor play zone for infant and toddlers. But the economy took its toll and owner Jennifer Vazquez decided to close. Then opportunity knocked for a different kind of store in the same location. “About a month before we closed the door, this opportunity came around,” she said. The opportunity was the chance to sell clothing at a fabulous price. “My father, a friend of his is a buyer of these clothes; he normally sells to a swap shop,” she said. “They were talking and decided this would be a good thing to try and open a store.” Because of the recession, everyone is looking for good clothing at a great price and the deep discounts on the clothes at Jungle Jimbo’s Discount Clothing Safari are welcomed by shoppers in South Miami-Dade County. Vazquez said they have been discovered by customers. “We were selling before we were actually open,” she said. “We had people coming in and buying even before we had the racks full. We have repeat customers.” They reward customers with tokens that count toward their next visit.
Jungle Jimbo’s carries overstock items or discontinued lines, or stock that comes from a store that is closing. The clothing is new and it is not irregular or damaged goods. If something comes in that is damaged, they put it on the damaged rack and sell it for $1.99. Vazquez said they had a beautiful dress that was just missing a button and it was put on the damaged rack to be sold for $1.99. She said anyone who is good with needle and thread can easily fix those items. “They are all brand name items,” Vazquez said. “The majority of our inventory is $9.99. The highest we go to is $24.99, which is for our suits. All of our tank tops sell for $5.99.” She has prom dresses for $24.99 and jeans for $15.99. One of the tops she bought for herself was originally valued at $75, but it’s on her racks for $9.99. The name brands include Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, G-Unit clothing and other brands. “We carry everything from petite to plus sizes,” she said. “I think the largest size I have right now is 3X. We have a huge variety.” The store, at 18471 S. Dixie Hwy. in the South Dade Shopping Plaza, is 3,500 square feet and has about 5,000 pieces on

the floor. Vazquez said she even has some stock in the back that she and her employees can check if a customer is looking for something in particular. Best of all, while some discount stores are such a mess that it’s hard to find anything worthwhile, Jungle Jimbo’s is in pristine condition. Vazquez’s staff is constantly picking up and putting things away. And because the staff is well trained
and helped set up the store, they know where everything is. If someone walks in and asks for sundresses, the staff can help them find them quickly. “We have a large enough store where we can have enough inventory and at the same time it’s small enough we can always see you or hear you,” she said. The Transportation Trust – Moving Forward The Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust (Transportation Trust) is the oversight board created as part of the half-cent sales surtax and the People’s Transportation Plan approved by the voters of Miami-Dade County in 2002. The first leg of the Metrorail system expansion will break ground this May. This $525 million project — the Miami Intermodal Center/Earlington Heights Connector — will bring Metrorail to Miami International Airport. A new fleet of railcars and Metromover cars are also being purchased. In the transportation area, more than 390 miles of roadways have been improved. A new Advanced Traffic Management System that will ease traffic congestion throughout our community is currently being installed. Traffic circles have been constructed and school safety crossing zones have been improved.
There is, however, much yet to be done. There has been great concern over promises made and the ability to fund those projects. The Trust shares these concerns. The Trust is also encouraged and applauds the candor, honesty and quality of the discussion occurring within Miami-Dade County and the community. The South Florida Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers are committed to continue supporting South Florida students with their post secondary education, even during these difficult economic times. BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD In today’s economy, people are looking for ways to turn unused items they have in their homes into moneymaking treasure. One way of doing that is by selling off unused gold jewelry. Some companies have gold owners send them the gold items in specially market envelopes and then give them a quote. But Countrywide Gold Buyers is different — it buys the gold on the spot. Countywide Gold Buyers has kiosks at Dadeland Mall, Miami International Mall and a store at The Falls Shopping Center, with plans for additional locations. Edwin Carrion, the company’s chief financial officer, who will oversee the Miami locations, and company president Luis Junco explained what they do. “We’re looking for used, broken and outdated gold jewelry,” Carrion said. “We buy gold, silver and platinum.” Because of the state of the economy, Carrion and Junco recognize there is a need for people to make money. “We recycle your gold for cash,” Carrion said. “Everybody is doing the ‘green’ thing, but they are forgetting to recycle the most precious metals, which are gold, silver and platinum.” Junco said this is a new market they are exploring while helping people who need cash. “Our two goals are to help the community and help the environment,” he says. “We’re not a pawn shop. We provide a safe, secure environment for people to come and sell their jewelry.” Countrywide Gold Buyers works directly with refineries where the jewelry is melted down for resale to jewelers. They weigh and test the jewelry, cutlery
or even gold teeth in front of the customer. “We actually show the prices to the customer,” Junco said. “People come in and say this is 10-carat gold and we tell them ‘no,’ it’s 18 carats and pay them for 18 carats.” Plus, National Gold Buyers will not pull that trick where they see a valuable piece and lowball the customer and then turn around and resell it for a huge profit. Carrion said if a customer comes in with antique pieces that could be more valuable “as is” instead of buying the piece and melting it down, they’ll suggest the owner try selling the pieces at antique shows or look for other places where they will get the value they deserve. “We tell them what it’s worth,” Junco said. “We are fair. We do what we do because we want people to trust us. Not many people know about jewelry. We don’t resell anything. We are not estate brokers.” Junco and Carrion said they want the public to understand they are not like pawnbrokers who buy jewelry for far less than its value. They post their prices and weigh the jewelry in front of the customers. And they give the customer a check right on the spot. They also report everything they buy to the police, which is why they require identification from sellers. Clients can make money. Carrion said the average customer sells $800 to $1,000 in gold items. BY LEE STEPHENS Members of the Coral Reef High School boys’ basketball team are still celebrating their recent state championship and Miami-Dade County Commission chair Dennis C. Moss recognized the winning coach and team on May 21 in the Miami-Dade County Commission chambers. In early March, the Coral Reef Barracudas came from behind and defeated Orlando Olympia in Lakeland with a final score of 69-60. In addition, Coral Reef’s boys basketball team made history by becoming the first school from the south Miami-Dade area to win a boys basketball championship in 50 years. Sports is not the only thing on which Coral Reef High prides itself. The school is very big on academics.
“It’s amazing how dedicated they are both to their basketball and their class work,” said second-year coach Gaston “Chachi” Rodriguez. “I’ll have kids that are getting A’s and B’s, and they’ll still be stressing about doing better.” Only a handful of teammates from Coral Reef were able to take part in the presentation at the County Commission chambers. More than a dozen had to remain at school due to final exams and end of the year commitments. Commissioner Moss saw to it that each member of the team was recognized and given a Certificate of Appreciation for his efforts. “I am proud of these young men who are committed to both academics and athletics,” Moss said. “I’m sure this is just the beginning of great things for each one of them. Keep up the good work.”

looks to remedy the current emotional downturn in society with “Laughter Yoga,” a four-week course taught by instructor Christina Farnsworth, which will take place on Wednesdays at noon from June 10 through July 1, at the Institute, 1550 Brescia Ave., on the UM’s Coral Gables campus. This series will explore a unique, hands-on approach to yoga. Concepts such as deep breathing combined with the exercise of laughter will be addressed. The goal of the course is to remind individuals to find a way past difficult situations with laughter. Admission to this event for OLLI members is $32 for all four classes or $10 per class. Your emergency portable TV may not work after hurricane BY HAL FELDMAN We entered another South Florida hurricane season on June 1. We all know the drill; we’ve done it countless times before. Prepare the shutters, check the generators, get fuel and make sure you have plenty of fresh batteries for the flashlights and your emergency portable TV. But this year, fresh batteries for the TV likely won’t be enough. Most of us will need a fresh TV too. On June 12, 2009, the FCC and U.S. Government requirement to have all broadcast television stations permanently shut down their analog signals goes into effect. This means most TV sets that are not using cable or satellite boxes simply will stop working. More importantly, nearly all of the portable TV sets people have packed away for emergency use become instantly defunct. So, if you are used to huddling around your battery-powered emergency TV to watch news reporters flap in the breeze as they tell you about the latest hurricane damage, you’ll need to buy a new set that has a digital tuner (ATSC). Otherwise, it’ll just be you and the radio. And for those who do have satellite or cable plugged into an analog TV; don’t forget that should (or more likely, when) the cable or satellite feed goes out, you are in the same boat. Nothing but snow to keep you company as the winds howl outside. The reason for the analog shut down is clear — or more accurately high-def. It is the ATSC digital signal that is capable of producing beautiful, high-resolution HDTV images on our ever-expansive flatscreen TVs. It’s the future of all TV. During the past two years, all broadcast television stations have been dual broadcasting their
programming in both analog (NTSC) and digital (ATSC) formats to accommodate viewers during the transition. The June 12 analog shutoff is the next logical step in the move to HDTV. While there are many benefits to the digital signal, the lack of backwards compatibility is a huge drawback, especially for Floridians during hurricanes. For the uninformed, our next weather event could be a rude awakening. That’s why, as a technology consultant, I felt it important to write this article. It is important to know that this potential “communication emergency” is real. Thankfully, the solution is simple. Buying a new emergency ATSC portable television is not an expensive proposition. At around $100, it’s pretty much a nobrainer. I have seen and recommend buying either the Haier 7-inch portable TV (Model HLT71) or the Coby 8-inch portable TV (Model TF-TV891). Both are sold through Amazon.com (use this link http://tinyurl.com/hurricaneTVs). In addition to the new portable TV, you also may want to consider an external HDTV antenna. Based on my research in the areas of Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay, digital broadcast reception is marginal with the use of a basic indoor antenna and may require something beyond the included telescoping antenna. Either a roof antenna or a passive indoor antenna such as the Terk HDTVi are good choices. Even though amplified antennae typically yield better reception, I suggest you don’t buy one for your hurricane supplies. If the power is out, you are out of luck.

LET’S TALK CARS The all-new 2009 Nissan Maxima is the seventh generation of the luxury sport sedan and it just may be the best one yet. The Maxima rides on Nissan’s popular D Platform, the same FWD underpinning that was introduced with the hot-selling Altima. However, the chassis has been “enhanced” with the use of aluminum suspension links, revised suspension, new technology shocks, a lower engine mounting and a new Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), all of which contribute to minimal torque steer and much better handling As for design, the new Maxima no longer resembles its sibling Altima, but does look a lot like Nissan’s new GT-R super sports car. It has a short nose and deck, a long sloping roof, deeply sculpted fenders and a wider front and rear track. Wraparound upturned headlights and a wide grille combine with a large bumper
opening and a bulging hood. The design flows through deep-waisted rear fenders and into a high trunk lid. New L-shaped LED taillights with side marker bulbs accent the rear. The sporty look is accented further by 18-inch (or available 19-inch) aluminum alloy wheels and low-profile performance tires. The new Maxima is available in two models, the 3.5 S and 3.5 SV, both powered by an enhanced 3.5-liter VQ-series 290-hp V-6 engine (19/26 mpg). The revised engine has a modular design with microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons, a resin intake collector, digital knock control, six individual coils (one per spark plug) and a cross-flow coolant pattern. It also has a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), a variable induction system, a silent timing chain and an electronically controlled throttle. It all adds up to more horsepower and torque for quicker acceleration. The 3.5 SV models add leatherappointed sport seats, an advanced Bose premium audio system with nine speakers, HomeLink, fog lights and outside mirrors with turn signal indicators. This new 2009 Nissan Maxima should compete very well in a class that includes the Chrysler 300, Cadillac CTS, Acura TL, Infiniti G35 and Toyota Avalon. Base price is $29,290 on the 3.5S and $31,900 on the 3.5SV.
