oys and Girls volleyball teams from Miami Palmetto High School not only have done well in indoor competitions, they also are scoring well in beach volleyball. Tony McInerney, an alumni of the school and Palmetto Bay resident, serves as the Palmetto Boys Volleyball Booster president for the 2008-11 term. McInerney is excited that Miami Palmetto teams not only have taken over the high school circuit, but also are competing nationally on the beach. “Our girls indoor volleyball team won GMAC, districts and regionals, making it to the State Championships this year,” McInerney said. “Our boys went undefeated in our district, winning the district title, losing at the regionals to defending champions Southwest Eagles, missing the finals by only one game.” Two of the boys, Matias Ulloa and

BY MAGGIE HAYS It can take years of youth league play and endless hours of practice to achieve what most kids will never experience — a state championship. But for one family, it has come twice and in the same year. The Fennell family, a well-known name in sports around Westminster Christian High School, is still enjoying the exciting results of not one, but two, state championships. Jessica “JJ” Fennell, a sophomore on the softball team playing left field, and Kevin Fennell, a senior on the baseball team at second base, are both on state championship teams. After long months of playing and practicing, brother and sister have achieved the unbelievable end to their seasons, sharing the rare opportunity to win FHSAA (Class 2A) State Championships in their respective sports. The double wins mark the second time it has happened in Westminster Christian’s history. It first was achieved in 1998. The school is the only one in the county able to boast the achievement. This was Jessica’s second trip to the finals with her team. After coming in second place as an eighth grader in 2007, she was determined for better results and was a key player in Westminster’s championship victory just one month ago. They say that, “timing is everything,” and indeed it was on the night of May 5. As if winning in extra innings in the regional championship to advance to state was not enough for the Fennells, this

game was especially memorable for Jessica. The game was won in an exciting comeback fashion as she celebrated her 16th birthday that evening, with family, fellow teammates and friends cheering her on. “This was the best team I had ever played on,” she said. “I will never forget that night.” The softball championship run was only the culmination of an active season schedule for the parents, Barry and Cathy Fennell, who have been juggling home and work, often leaving one game to begin another, where their teens’ game schedules overlapped. “I grew up in a house with three brothers, and sports was a way of life then, as it is today with my kids,” Cathy said. “Though crazy at times, we enjoy it and it is very much a part of our routine.” No sooner had the celebration subsided for the girl’s softball victory, it made way for the exciting ending to the baseball season. “The team kept winning and we had graduation right in the middle of all the excitement,” Mrs. Fennell said. “With so much going on at once, even after they won, it still hadn’t hit home.” Kevin, affectionately known as “funnel” to his teammates, competed for the last time to complete a very memorable high school year. “We have come up short in the past which made this win even more desired. I could not have asked for a better way to end my senior year,” Kevin added, after the win.

VOLLEYBALL, from page 1 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– MUSIC, Michael (Mac) McInerney, both juniors at Palmetto High, made the prestigious Miami Herald First Team All Dade. Now that the indoor seasons are over, both boys and girls teams have shifted to the beach game. Training takes place at Palmetto Bay’s Coral Reef Park on its state-of-the-art beach courts, with their indoor coach, Kim Latshaw-Ortiz, who also coaches for Club Beach Dig. Beach volleyball differs from indoor in that teams consist of two players, playing on a sand court. “Hopefully these boys will be putting Palmetto Bay on the map at an Olympic level in the near future, both indoor and on the beach,” McInerney said. “Beach or ‘sand’ volleyball has just been added to NCAA, as a college sport. For now just for women, but in the near future men will have to be added, given our Olympic achievements last year.” Having won in Florida last year, the Palmetto “beach” boys competed at the national level and traveled to Huntington Beach, CA, to place third and fourth nationally. Both teams trained with Latshaw Ortiz and Club Beach Dig.

Cindy Phillips, who is the founder and director of Club Beach Dig, profoundly appreciates the coaching efforts and the help provided by the beach volleyball courts in Palmetto Bay. “We are so lucky to have Coach Kim Latshaw-Ortiz as the head of our Florida Divisions of Club Beach Dig,” Phillips said. “Not only has she coached these boys to indoor success at Palmetto, but she has also helped them achieve great honors at a national level on the Junior’s Beach Circuit. “Beach volleyball is still a new and emerging sport for many players and without sand courts like the ones at Coral Reef Park, we would not be able to provide Club Beach Dig to so many young aspiring athletes. The beaches are fantastic, but they are not accessible to every family, so we are grateful to have alternative places to train our kids,” Phillips said. “As beach volleyball grows in popularity, and now has become a college sport, we are excited to help more young volleyball players grow and succeed.”

Club member Dottie Simon’s home in Cutler Bay hosted the annual scholarship awards program recently, where the winners performed. “Every year we tend to find more and more talented students,” said club

member Pat Tiemeyer. “The thing is, it’s hard to get some of them to participate because they’re so busy with other activities. When we do get them to come to the auditions they love it, and the families are so impressed with our club. This year we had a nice group participate. It gives them a jumpstart on their careers and some of them go on to become performers.” Ruth Perry, scholarship chair, presented each winning student with a scholarship check to be used to further their music education. In addition to congratulating the talented students, the club invites other South Dade County music students to participate in the competition next spring. “We find that it really encourages young music students to continue with their lessons,” Jean Welsh, outgoing president, said. “We don’t expect they’ll all become professional musicians, and we can’t offer a large scholarship, but we think they feel they have accomplished something when they receive it.” For more information, call Jean Welsh at 305-235-0561.

AROUND TOWN Mayor Gene Flinn, proud hubby of successful young adult novelist Alex Flinn, has sent us another update on the filming of “Beastly” for CBS Films, based on his wife’s book by the same name. In Alex’s fantasy novel, a teenage girl places a curse on a handsome egocentric young New Yorker who’s physically transformed into everything he despises. It’s a kind of modern retelling of the “Beauty and the Beast” fairy tale and sounds as if it should be a big hit. Vanessa Hudgens is one of the stars in the film, and Alex Pettyfer has been signed to play the beastly young man. Latest word is that Mary-Kate Olsen has also been signed to star in the film as the spell-casting gal who feels motivated to teach Pettyfer’s character a much needed lesson. Daniel Barnz is directing from his own script and Susan Cartsonis is producing. Shooting kicks off June 13th in Montreal. Mary-Kate Olsen sounds like just the right person for the role, and anyway, the move may be good insurance for the production, since if Mary-Kate should be under the weather at any time during the filming, they could always tap her identical twin Ashley Olsen to sub for her. FP&L’s proposed dig could add salt to drinking water R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Those of us that run our air conditioners on Florida Power & Light energy could be choosing between paying more for electricity or running the risk of FP&L’s proposed rock mining damaging our drinking water. When I say “we” will be choosing, I really mean our elected board of county commissioners, with advice from regulatory agencies in Tallahassee, will make the decision for us. Here’s the story. FP&L must generate more electricity as population growth demands more power. Turkey Point, a nuclear generating plant, can be expanded, but, with certain expansion requirements that do not bode well for our South Florida community. Last week FP&L asked the country commission for approval to dig up hundreds of acres of land adjacent to the Turkey Point

plant. The rock will be used as fill for the expanded facility. The problem is increased salt intrusion west into our primary drinking water wells that supply the southern tip of Southeast Florida including the Keys. FP&L wants to dig up 880 acres of farmland between Turkey Point and the Homestead Air Base. They claim that if they are prohibited from digging the rock from nearby farmland, they will have to pay tens of millions of dollars to truck in the rock from far off rock pits, more than likely in northwest Miami-Dade. The threat, though not stated at this stage in the game, will more than likely be “If we can’t dig up the rock we need we will be forced to pass on to our customers the millions we will spend to truck in the fill.” Thus our dilemma: Spend more on electricity or run the risk of salty drinking water. There are other problems associated with the proposed 880 acres of rock pits. The possible salt intrusion, west toward the Everglades, will hamper our efforts to flush fresh water from the Everglades into Biscayne Bay to the south in an attempt to regenerate marine life that has been killed by phosphate runoffs

Our county commissioners, by an 8 to 2 vote, gave preliminary approval and sent the FP&L request to Florida’s Department of Community Affairs in Tallahassee for consideration and recommendation. Remember Tallahassee recommended not moving the Urban Development Boundary. Nonetheless, after reviewing the department’s recommendations, county commissioners voted to move the boundaries for two major commercial projects. FP&L’s land-use proposal touts the quarries as “water management projects” that could be used for Everglades restoration. Dawn Shirreffs, South Florida organizer for Clean Water Action Committee, said, “Mining, for Everglades restoration, is like starting a smoking habit for your health.” Voting against the proposal, Commissioners Katy Sorenson and

Barbara Jordan said the plan posed risks to the county’s drinking water and should be rejected now without further review. Commission chair Dennis Moss, while voting “yes,” said “three questions must be answered before a final okay: Is there a real benefit to the public? Is there no impact on the water supply? And, that this doesn’t open up additional rock mining in the area?” I am surprised that real estate developers and home builders aren’t fighting FP&L’s proposal. Some 880 acres going from farmland to rock pits is land that could some day be rezoned for homes, and will be gone forever as future residential subdivisions.

4 YOUR MONEY Miramar resident Hector Arce is sticking to a tight budget just so that he can keep his home. When Arce’s homeowner’s insurance bill went up to $2,600 a year, he became very concerned and naturally unhappy. State lawmakers, acting under intense pressure from the insurance industry, recently threw out years of consumer protection laws. Florida’s Department of Insurance may have no authority to block the industry from charging whatever it wants if state lawmakers get their way. State Rep. Julio Robaina was one of the only South Florida lawmakers to vote against the bill deregulating the insurance industry here in Florida. He says, “I think we went back 10 years when we talk about consumer protection. I have said that this was the year for special agendas to have their way and the consumers lost out in Florida.” What has happened? Since 2005’s hyperactive storm season, homeowner’s insurance rates basically have been frozen. Smaller rate hikes have been allowed but only after formal review by Florida’s insurance regulators, who often refused the big rate hikes requested by the insurance companies. These rules expire in 2010, however. The industry successfully lobbied lawmakers to again allow rate hikes, starting with the state-run Citizens Insurance program. Its rates will start going up about 10 percent a year for several years with no end in sight, as allowed by a new bill signed into law on May 27 of this year by Gov. Charlie Crist. Other private companies are expected to follow. The industry argues that it needs to better capitalize itself through

higher rates in order to pay for the damages that the next bad storm may bring. Florida’s insurance rules were targeted by the industry after the state refused to allow double-digit rate hikes from insurers like State Farm and Allstate. Both chose to leave the state in order to avoid facing possible big losses from the next bad storm. Since insurance industry regulations have been voted out, homeowner’s insurance rates are expected to start climbing even higher. Some critics worry that in a state with some of the highest foreclosure rates in the nation, higher insurance bills could force even more financially struggling residents out of their homes and condos. Lawmaker Julio Robaina of West Miami referred to the bill as “the worst piece of legislation ever to come out of Florida Legislature.” This leaves local homeowners like Hector Arce wondering where he’ll find the extra money to pay his next insurance bill. Supporters of the legislation say Citizens customers would have been looking at rate increases between 40 percent and 55 percent on Jan. 1 if lawmakers didn’t produce legislation for 10 percent increases spread over several years. The bill also reduces the state’s $20 billion exposure on the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund by phasing out the upper levels of a state backup pool by $2 billion a year over a six-year period. It’s clear that Florida’s insurance crisis isn’t solved. With the strong possibility that we are hit by some major storms this season, there’s no guarantee that either state or private insurers will have enough money to pay all their bills. Ed MacDougall, EDC chair, and Frieda Brown, vice president of TotalBank, presented the award to Cheryl Correa, owner and manager, during the Economic Development Council General Membership meeting on Apr. 28. “The newly constructed Fern Street Plaza is a great addition to Palmetto Bay’s commercial area,” said Herb Parlato, executive director of the EDC. “This new shopping center has not only brought important new amenities to the area, they continue to help create new jobs that benefit the residents of South Miami-Dade. In addition, the continued beautification of properties such as the Fern Street Plaza creates a more attractive place to live, work and play.”

The EDC Beautification Award program was designed to promote awareness of business owners’ pride in their establishments, as well as to foster a sense of pride in the aesthetic aspects of the community. Miami-Dade County Commission chair Dennis C. Moss will be serving as the honorary chair of the Relay For Life at Miami Metrozoo taking place on Saturday, June 27, at the northeast parking lot entrance located at 12400 SW 152 St. The event will begin at noon; the opening/survivor ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. with the Luminaria ceremony at 8:30 p.m. Billy the Marlin and the “Marlins Mermaids” will join in this effort. Columbus conducted its annual Block “C� Athletics Awards Banquet in May. The Spor tsmanship A ward went to Caesar Rodriguez, a three-year letterman in two sports — football and track. He ranks as one of the best defensive ends in the history of the Columbus football program and earned First Team All Dade Honors. He won backto-back district championships in the discus and also qualified for the regional meet in the shot put. Rodriguez was a Eucharistic minister, a Campus Ministry leader, and the lead anchor on the Christopher Columbus New Network. He will play football for Central Michigan University. The Scholar Athlete A ward went to Eric Evans, a well-rounded athlete and student who with a GPA of 5.2 ranked third in his senior class. A four-year letterman in roller hockey, he has played a vital role in the emergence of the program as a powerhouse in Miami-Dade County. This year he led the team to a divisional championship. The Columbus track team benefited

greatly from his pole-vaulting prowess. As a junior he qualified for the state championship and as a senior he captured the individual title at the regional championship. He was instrumental in the Explorers’ drive to their first regional track title in 35 years. Active in Campus Ministry, he received a Miami Herald Silver Knight nomination and was a member of the Mas Scholars Program. He will attend the University of Florida. The Outstanding Athlete A ward went to Gary Bush who is truly outstanding in three sports, a rare achievement these days. In football, he added explosive athleticism to the wide receiver corps, while rushing the ball to help the Explorers clinch a playoff berth. In basketball, he led the team in scoring two years in a row and was a two-time team MVP. In track, as a junior he won the long jump at the Dade County Youth Fair Meet and qualified for the state meet. As a senior he was a triple winner in the district finals. He is the first Explorer in 30 years to be awarded a scholarship to Purdue University.

Should you seek a second opinion on your annuity?

While reviewing a new client’s portfolio recently, I ran across a variable annuity that the client had owned for many years. At one point, the client had seen the portfolio appreciate greatly due to the fact that it was invested entirely in equities. Unfortunately, the client recently saw all of the gains erased, along with some of the initial investment (cost basis), because he was invested 100% in equities. This left the client a little distressed. As we analyzed the portfolio in the variable annuity, my client decided that he was no longer comfortable having any equity exposure in his portfolio. At this point, the conversation shifted to the types of investments he would be more comfortable owning. The idea of fixed annuities arose during the conversation. My client had owned fixed annuities in the past and was still interested in having a taxdeferred investment since he is in a high income tax bracket. Below you will find all of the different options that we took into consideration before we made any decisions. An annuity is a contract with an insurance company. Annuities are

long term investments that grow tax deferred. Variable annuities involve fees and expenses not typically associated with other investments. This tax deferral means that any interest, dividends, or capital gains that are earned inside the annuity are not taxable until the client actually takes a distribution from the annuity. The tax-deferred growth is an important benefit of an annuity for an investor in a high tax bracket. The annuity owner can defer earnings for years, therefore reducing his tax liability. Investing in an annuity within a tax-deferred account such as an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) will provide no additional tax savings. After a few years of compounded growth, an annuity can potentially accumulate a significant amount of tax-deferred growth inside the contract. This is where an IRS tax provision called a 1035 exchange would be beneficial if the contract owner was ever contemplating a replacement of their annuity. The IRS 1035 exchange allows for unrealized gains inside the tax deferred annuity to be exchanged into another annuity without realizing an immediate tax consequence. There are times when replacing an existing annuity to another annuity company could be beneficial. Advantages of an exchange could be as simple as a higher interest rate on a fixed annuity or obtaining additional rider benefits inside a variable annuity. Prior to surrendering an annuity, investors should consider the effect of any surrender charges which may apply in the early years of the contract and any additional fees and expenses associated with the new policy.

Significant enhancements have been made to variable annuity contracts in recent years through contract riders. The benefits range from Principal Protection riders to Lifetime Income riders. All of these riders differ depending upon the issuing insurance company. Unfortunately, my client’s variable annuity contract did not have any of these riders. If the contract did contain one of these riders we would have had the simple solution of keeping the policy as is and simply implementing the rider. Older variable annuity contracts might not have any of these contract rider benefits attached to the existing policy. If a variable annuity contract holder is interested in obtaining these types of riders, they might have to exchange their policy to a different insurance company that offers the desired contract rider benefits. Optional riders involve additional fees. These above mentioned examples are where an IRS 1035 exchange might be needed for the client. For example, if a client originally invested $100,000 and the present market value of his annuity is $200,000, the client would avoid paying income tax on the $100,000 of growth by using the IRS 1035 exchange provision. By using this tax provision correctly, the taxpayer defers paying the income tax on this exchange until a later date. Now what happens if the taxpayer has a loss on a variable annuity? Can they deduct the losses? The answer is yes, just as long as they do not use the IRS 1035 exchange process. The loss has to be realized. This means that the client will have to close (surrender) the policy in full.

This is where having a good accountant is very helpful. Since the IRS does not offer any specific guidance on the deductibility of variable annuity losses we must refer to different IRS Revenue Rulings and IRS Publications for guidance. In the end, my client did choose to go into a fixed annuity because he did not want to worry about the market volatility of his investment. He did move his variable annuity to the fixed annuity but only after he completely surrendered his variable annuity in order to realize the tax losses. He did not use the IRS 1035 exchange provision since this would have disqualified him from realizing the tax losses. During this process we were in constant contact with the client’s accountant in order to make sure that everyone was on the same page. If you are presented with the idea of making any type of changes to existing annuities, it is strongly suggested that you consult your accountant first to make sure that you fully understand your tax implications. Sandra Sher Goldman’s art in exhibition at Alper JCC BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ A retrospective of the work by artist Sandra Sher Goldman is on exhibit through June 26 at the Futernick Family Gallery at the Alper JCC in Kendall. Through various mediums including paintings, printmaking and ceramics, the artist’s talent and versatility are seen clearly as she paints and sculpts the story of her life during the past 50 years. The show begins with a gentle, muted oil painting of a street scene in her hometown of Malden, MA, and quickly moves to a series of beautifully drawn etchings and aquatints that were inspired when she and her family moved to Miami. The fun, free concert series, a popular tradition for many Floridians, combines the smooth sounds of jazz with beautiful Gulf views, stunning sunsets over the water, refreshing breezes, and a relaxing atmosphere. The concert, like all of the “SummerJazz on the Gulf” concerts, will be take place on the resort’s scenic Watkins Lawn overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Re-Joyce – Miami to celebrate ‘Bloomsday’ 105th Anniversary BY ROBERT HAMILTON For millions of people June 16 is an extraordinary day. On that day, 105 years ago, two residents of Dublin, Ireland — Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom — embarked on their epic converging journeys through the city. Their travels and adventures, both real and imagined, were memorialized in James Joyce’s masterpiece, Ulysses, the world’s most highly acclaimed modern novel. “Bloomsday,” named after Leopold Bloom, has become a tradition for Joyce enthusiasts all over the world. From Tokyo to Sidney, San Francisco to Buffalo, Trieste to Paris, Sarasota to Miami, dozens of cities around the globe hold their own Bloomsday festivities. Miami-Dade County will join these cities in observing the Bloomsday 105th Anniversary Celebration with a series of activities in Coral Gables. The St. Patrick’s Day Committee, Miami-Dade Public Library System, City of Coral Gables, Actors’ Playhouse, Books and Books, and JohnMartin’s

Restaurant and Irish Pub are sponsors. The project is presented with the support of the City of Coral Gables, MiamiDade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, mayor and Miami-Dade County Commission. “Tempo Contemporary,” an elegant show of 16 works by five Dominican Republic artists and 80 student artists from around the United States, continues through June 19 in the Miami Dade College Kendall Campus Gallery. The Dominican works were curated by Lilia Fontana, MDC Kendall Gallery director, from Abro Gallery in Miami’s Wynwood Art District. The 80 student works were supplied by Alberto Mesa, professor of printmaking and painting, who participates in an exchange program with Oregon State University. Student prints from 14 states and six countries are represented in the show. Maximo Caminero works with mixed media on canvas, in black and white, with high impact images that express a distinct disillusionment with the repressive government. Vertigo is visually explosive, within a circumscribed composition. Tequila/No Mercy is a bleak and powerful piece that leaves no room for doubt about Caminero’s reasons for splitting his time between San Juan, PR, and Miami. Danza Del Todo brings a bit more mellow message: the dance of life continues, despite repressive governments and bitter anger. Four mixed media works on canvas by Yolanda Naranjo — Caos, Solida, Lost and Caos II, each dominated by a primary pigment color — express a turbulence and disquieted feeling that may be as much a political statement as an emotional state. Their sizes range from 59 by 78 inches to 78 by 98 inches and are among the smallest of her works. She is currently living and working in Greece. Temples I, Temples II and Temples III by Elvis Aviles are mixed media pieces, small in size and apparently meant to be companion pieces. All three are of rich chocolate brown, beige, and taupe impasto paint with

white chalk line drawing running through them and floating, recessed in their frames. These three pieces were sold within minutes of the start of the opening event to a single collector. Professor Danelle Augustin, Art Historian and adjunct faculty at MDC’s Kendall Campus, said she felt pulled towards Elvis Aviles’ work. “It is no surprise to me that these works sold so quickly. His sophisticated utilization of chalk conjures images of primal religious art interspersed between the warm browns, remind us of Mother Earth, or in the case of this exhibit, Mother Dominican Republic.” Ezequiel Tavaras is represented by three ceramic female torsos with varied surfaces that mimic marble, charred wood and granite. All go by the title, Tras el Oscuro Objeto del Deseo. Liz Severino, lives and works in Europe, most recently in France, and a strong feminine quality pervades her work in three renditions of “Caribbean Women.” Two smaller pieces flank a larger piece and each is overlaid with impasto lace patterns. Eighty miniature prints comprise the exhibit of Mesa’s exchange program with the Oregon State University Art Department. The drawing quality of some of the student prints is impressive. One piece drawing a lot of attention is a whimsical, three dimensional miniature kite, complete with tail, all printed with an intriguing pattern that evokes memories of childhood and forays to the beach where families with children, young couples and groups of teens all launched their colorful, flying gear. BY ELENA COHAN As part of National Safe Boating Week, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 6-5 presented its second annual free safe boating class to local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and other invited children between the ages 11 and 17. The 47 participants, including 32 youth and 15 adults, met on Saturday, May 23, at Elks Lodge 1676 in South Miami and learned basic skills and legal requirements for safe boating during the three-and-a-half-hour class. Everyone passed the verbal testing at the conclusion of the class and received a certificate from the Flotilla evidencing their successful completion of the training. All the youth who attended are now eligible to receive the Safe Boater ID card from the State of Florida. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida historically has held claim to the distinction of having annually the high-

est number of boating accidents, injuries and fatalities when compared to the rest of the nation. Many boaters simply do not have the information they need to be safe on the water. Through the efforts of Flotilla 6-5, there potentially are 47 safer and bettereducated persons knowing what to do while they are out on the water. Flotilla 6-5, along with the other Flotillas in Division 6 in Miami-Dade County, present boating safety and seamanship skills classes throughout the year at numerous locations. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 6-5 meets the first Tuesday of each month at 8 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, located at 6304 SW 78 St. in South Miami. Guests are welcome at the monthly meetings and the Flotilla always is looking for people to join in assisting and supporting the Coast Guard in insuring the safety of the boating public. 2009 Mazda6 advances ‘zoom zoom’ technology Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Mazda6 was introduced in 2003 and “zoom zoom” became two of the most popular words in automotive marketing. The hot new sport sedan was the first Mazda to get the company’s sports car technology fused into a five-passenger, four-door sedan. The Mazda6 was the company’s first vehicle designed, engineered, developed and manufactured in the U.S. and the intent was to meet and surpass the American consumer’s needs. The new Mazda6 does that and more. The 2009 Mazda6 rides on a 4.5-inch longer wheelbase (109.8 inches) with wider front and rear tracks, which increases interior room in virtually all aspects. At the same time, two new powertrains give the car more horsepower and better fuel economy. The

MAZDA6i’s new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (21/30 mpg) has 170 hp, while the hot new MAZDA6s has a 3.7-liter V6 (17/25 mpg) that produces 272 hp. That’s the same new 60-degree 3.7-liter engine — called the MZI — that was introduced in the Mazda CX-9, the 2008 North American Truck of the Year. The Mazda6i comes standard with a close-ratio, six-speed manual transmission capable of handling all the performance provided by the 2.5-liter MZR engine. An electronically controlled five-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode is also available. A new six-speed automatic with manual shift mode is standard in the MAZDA6s. On the outside, the Mazda6 has a pronounced front fender much like the one on the RX-8 and a design that flows from the front fascia through the headlamp, over the top of the front-wheel opening and into the side surface ahead of the front door. A graceful S-curve flows from the highest point of the roof to the lip at the end of the deck lid, with the rear glass seeming to melt into the deck lid for a very sleek appearance. Attention to detail is evident through-

out and especially in the taillights’ intricate LED components. On the inside, blacked-out instrument faces with bright metallic markings, needles and trim give the interior a detailed look, while curved surfaces blend the console into the instrument panel. The seats are comfortably firm and have strong side bolsters that hold you in place during hard cornering. The entrylevel interior has plated metal accents and a choice of black, beige or gray cloth upholstery. The Touring level blends cloth with leather upholstery and adds a leather steering wheel cover, while the

Grand Touring interior uses leather only for the upholstery in black, beige or gray. The new Mazda6 has a quick response, a strong acceleration and good handling characteristics. It goes a long way toward stepping up Mazda’s popular “zoom zoom” spirit. Base price on the 2009 Mazda 6 is $24,910.
