crew of 22 Boy Scouts and their leaders from Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay went on a life-changing 12-day summer trek through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico at Philmont Scout Ranch. Philmont covers 214 square miles of vast wilderness of which Boy Scout Troop 457 covered more than 70 miles while hiking. Prior to starting the trek in Cimarron, NM, the 53 scouts from the South Florida Council enjoyed three days of high adventure fun including mountain

almetto Bay resident Jaclyn “Hunter” Cope, 13, who has had to live with Type 1 (Juvenile) Diabetes every day of her life since she was diagnosed with the illness at age 6, recently had a chance to help raise diabetes awareness in a big way, traveling to Washington, DC, with other young people

to mingle with celebrities and government officials. Hunter was one of 150 children with Type 1 Diabetes, ranging in age from 4 to 17 and representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia, to have been selected as delegates for the 2009 JDRF Children’s Congress, held June 22-24. Besides raising awareness, the goal was to increase congressional support to help develop a cure. The young delegate’s trip included a visit with President Barack Obama at the White House, a town hall panel of athletes and celebrities impacted by diabetes, visits with her senators and representative, and the Senate hearing. All the excitement and activity caused her blood sugar to drop at one point, but that didn’t discourage her. “It was an experience of a lifetime to help raise diabetes awareness with members of Congress,” Hunter said. “I was glad that Rep. 5-year-old girl’s idea helps children in need BY LEE STEPHENS fter 5-year-old Isabella (Bella) Artiles’ birthday party in Pinecrest in March, the gifts were bountiful and she was overwhelmed with excitement. As she tore quickly tore through each gift, mom and dad had to scramble with their note taking for future thank you cards. In the midst of the chaos, Bella’s mom, Aimee, realized her little girl was “receiving” without the benefit of understanding the

FRC hosts picnic to show foster parent appreciation BY BETH COHEN The Family Resource Center (FRC) of South Florida Inc. recently hosted its Fourth Annual Foster Parent Appreciation Family Picnic at Tropical Park. More than 100 foster parents and kids enjoyed barbecued chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs while playing games, and doing arts and crafts. Every child received an age appropriate backpack with school supplies to kick off the upcoming school year. Highlights of the picnic included face painting by Fantastic Party Factory, bounce houses by All Star Events Inc. and music by Too Fresh DJs. The children also received a visit from the Florida Marlins mascot, Billy the Marlin. Twenty $25 gift certificates and a family fun pack donated by Williamson Cadillac, valued at $200, were raffled off to foster parents. “We were happy to hand out more than 100 backpacks with supplies to the foster children, so that they could be prepared to go back to school.” said Oren Wunderman, FRC executive director. “We are most grateful to our board of directors and to all those involved for putting this wonderful event together.” The Family Resource Center was founded in 1978 with the mission to help prevent and treat child abuse and neglect through the strengthening of families. For more information about the Family Resource Center visit online at <www.frcflorida.org>.

IDEA, from page 1 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– importance of “giving back.” In this moment, the concept for the Angel Share project was hatched. Bella’s parents thought it would be great if they could help others in need while teaching their daughter about the importance of generosity and empathy for those less fortunate. During the brainstorming process, Bella chimed in that she was ready to “help other kids.” So now, the Palmetto Bay family set out on the task of deciding how. “The initial challenge for us was to figure out how to actively engage our daughter in the process,” said Bella’s mom. “We knew Bella had to give of herself, give something that was important to her to be sure she was truly invested in the project.” Her parents decided that allowing Bella to give up some of her own toys, books and helping her to develop ways to earn money to give to others was the best approach for the Angel Share project. Everyone in the family was excited about Angel Share and Bella, the budding artist, got right down to business and decided she wanted to draw a picture to represent her project (Bella’s art is now Angel Share’s official logo). When Aimee shared her idea with Bella’s preschool teachers at Concordia Lutheran School in Kendall, the project got another jump-start. Concordia’s principal, Suzanne Cohen, decided she loved the concept of teaching 3- to 5year-olds the value of generosity and would help to instill a charitable spirit in the children. She asked Bella and her family to launch the project as a student-driven, school-wide effort to help kids and families in need. As Angel Share’s first charity project, the team decided to collect used toys and books, as well as key food items in an effort to assist the families of RCMA (Redlands Christian Migrant Association). RCMA is a non-profit organization chartered in 1965 providing childcare, education and support services to 6,000 children of migrant and poor rural families in 20 Florida counties. They serve children ages 6 weeks to 6 years. Volunteers kicked off Angel’s Share first project in April at Concordia Lutheran School and in no time, it was full steam ahead. The Angel Share kids, parents and teachers jumped in headfirst and immediately starting searching through their closets to collect more than 450 used toys and books in good condition and raised $400 at several

successful bake sales. All of this happened in less than one month’s time. “Everyone was so receptive to the project,” Aimee said. “Teachers jumped right on board and starting talking to the kids about the importance of helping others in need. Parents joined in and assisted their kids to bring in the requested items. “Two of my friends, one a graphic artist and the other a professional photographer — both moms of young children — volunteered their time and talents to assist in getting the project off the ground. It was truly remarkable.” On June 1, 18 students in Bella’s preschool class traveled to a RCMA center in Homestead to learn more about the school and meet with the children served by RCMA and provide them with a “gift” of some of the donated items from the fundraising efforts. Before exchanging the donated items, the smiling children shared song and dance while the sound of laughter and new friendships filled the room. “It was truly an amazing experience for the children,” Suzanne Cohen said. “I’m so glad we had the opportunity to meet the faces of RCMA. It was very emotional and impactful event for everyone. Our students were given a ‘real life’ experience which enabled them to see how their hard work and generosity positively affected other children’s lives.” Concordia Lutheran has decided to continue the Angel Share project during the 2009-10 school year. Each grade level will select a non-profit organization that benefits children and their families. The Angel Share objective will remain the same: To teach children that through their hard work and generosity they are able to help others who are less fortunate. “We want to keep it fresh and exciting and give the kids new opportunities to get involved and give back,” said Bella’s mom. “I think this is where it starts — when the kids are in preschool. We need to engage our preschoolers now so they will carry the spirit of generosity with them through their lives.” Aimee and Bella are thinking of ways to introduce the Angel Share program to other local preschools. In addition to the current Angel Share Facebook page the team also will be working on launching an Angel Share website in the next few months. If you would like to learn more about the Angel Share program now, you may contact Aimee at <aimee@maxdef.com>.

went low after our meeting.” Hunter also got to see such celebrities as Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, Mary Tyler Moore and Sugar Ray Leonard, who also addressed members of Congress to seek help for their cause. Nick Jonas, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 13, asked Congress members to support the renewal of the Special Diabetes Program next year so that researchers can continue their work on a cure for the disease. “Diabetes has changed my life,” Jonas said. “But I know I’ve benefited from the government’s investment in diabetes research. With the help of Congress, I’ll only have to wait a little bit longer for a cure.” Mary Tyler Moore, who was diagnosed as an adult, testified as well. “With your help, we’re making real progress towards discovery, development, and delivery of cures and significantly improving the health outcomes of people with type 1 diabetes and its complications,” Moore said. “With your help, new life-changing therapies and cures will, finally, be within our reach.” Sugar Ray Leonard, whose father had diabetes, also asked for help. “My decision to turn professional was based largely on the desire to help my family cover the costs of my father’s care,” Leonard said. “Thanks to Congress’ support, the advances made through research are bring-

SCOUTS,

ing us closer to the cure that will allow these children to finally knock out diabetes.” Hunter’s mom, Donna, said that their family has lived in Palmetto Bay for the past four years and that her daughter was the one who sought the opportunity to participate in the program. “Hunter has been very active in activities and fundraisers, and became aware through the JDRF about the Children’s Congress and applied for it last year,” Mrs. Cope said. “She was selected to represent the state of Florida, and got to meet people from all over the United States, and some foreign countries, too. It was very interesting.” The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the leader in research leading to a cure for Type 1 diabetes in the world, sets the global agenda for diabetes research and is the largest charitable funding organization and advocate of diabetes science worldwide. Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with Type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research, including more than $156 million in FY 2008. In FY 2008, the Foundation funded more than 1,000 centers, grants in laboratories, hospitals, and industry, and fellowships in 22 countries. biking down Pikes Peak, CO, from a starting point of 14,110 feet and whitewater rafting along the Arkansas River. On these adventures the Scouts encountered enough snow in June on top of Pikes Peak for a snowball fight and also watched as one Pinecrest crew was ejected from their river raft in Class IV rapids. A split lip, black eye and multiple bumps and bruises did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the crew for the coming Philmont trek. The group of boys and their advisors carried on their backs everything they needed to survive during the trek while hiking from camp to camp. The Scouts participated in backcountry activities at different camps which included rock climbing, blackpowder rifle shooting, blacksmithing, branding, panning for gold and touring an abandoned (and pitch dark) copper and gold mine. Each campsite had different and unique characterisitics. The trek included a conservation project where Scouts learned about and

participated in the upkeep of Philmont’s ecosystem. Along the route Scouts endured tough challenges that included being in bear, mountain lion and rattlesnake country; steep climbs; often inclement weather, and finding and purifying water for cooking and drinking. The crew made what amounts to a Scouting Pilgrimage with their trip to Philmont. Some days along the trek the Scouts would not encounter any other humans besides their own crewmembers. Philmont Scout Ranch continues to be the Boy Scouts of America’s premier high adventure camp and the largest youth camp in the world serving 22,000 participants every summer. Under the able leadership of the two Scout crew leaders, Chris Burg and Austin Brown, as well as the encouragement and advice of the adult advisors, Pete Burg and Jayne Brown, Troop 457 had an amazing experience in the wilderness. Some of these Scouts may one day return as Philmont Rangers.

Can we afford government retirement programs? R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY There was a time when working for the government meant sacrificing income for a guaranteed job. Government, then trying to compete with private industry for good workers, started offering benefits such as enhanced retirement plans and health benefits that were appealing to future employees but did not cost much money — in the beginning. Now, that has all changed! Working for government, especially state, county and municipal positions, no longer means a “job for life.” But, it does mean guaranteed benefits to those who retire, that private industry cannot afford, to stay competitive within the industry. General Motors and Chrysler are two perfect examples. A large portion of the price of their automobiles goes, at least before their reorganizations, to fund hospitalization and retirement benefits for retired employees, those who haven’t been working for their former employers for

many years. GM and Chrysler did not have the luxury of increasing the prices of their cars to accommodate the heavy cost of retiree benefits. If they did, their competitors would have eaten them alive by underselling their cars. Government is different. At least government was different. For years the dollars rolled into state, county and municipal treasuries. Money was not the question. Residents of our state went to the stores and bought and bought. Sales tax revenues continued to grow every year. The value of our real estate continued to grow at unprecedented rates. Real estate taxes continued to grow, and like the sales tax revenues put more and more dollars into government treasuries every year. County, municipal and state salaries continued to grow. In some cases unwarranted increases were granted and those in management seemed to turn a blind eye to the irresponsible use of taxpayer dollars. Work for government and your retirement benefits were guaranteed. Not only guaranteed but for a very high percentage of your salary. Contribute for a lifetime to Social Security and see just how little money you will receive at retire-

––– VIEWPOINT ––– ment. Social Security retirement benefits equate to about 19 percent of the average salary (based upon $50,000 at the time of retirement). Retire from government and benefits can be from 50 percent to as much as 90 percent (Miami-Dade County employees) of the average of the last few years’ salary. Join the “drop” program and see just how much money a retiring government employee will receive (but that’s for a later column). Private industry workers can no longer afford to fund government workers’ retirement programs. Workers in the private sector do not appreciate working their whole lives, paying taxes that fund government gargantuan retirement programs, and then retire on the meager monthly income provided by Social Security. Government seemed like the only place to work. Every year more and more businesses find that they can no longer afford to match a portion of employee contributions to retirement programs. Many retirees are

finding that retirement programs have been eliminated or modified by court action when their former employers go through bankruptcy. Salaries, health benefits and retirement benefits are the most costly portion of municipal, state and school systems’ budgets. Unless they are modified, bringing them into line with private industry, we will find more and more governments going into bankruptcy courts and having a federal judge modify their retirement benefits. The harsh reality is that government is spending itself out of business. Better they make the adjustments themselves than letting a bankruptcy judge do it.

I want to take a break from my normal financial/economic ramblings to remember Walter Cronkite. I grew up watching him chronicle some of the most turbulent times in U.S. history. From the assassination of John F. Kennedy, to the national debate about the Vietnam War, to Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, Walter Cronkite covered it all. He was a calm, steady force helping us to understand what was happening around the world. He asked tough questions and cut through the politicians’ “spin” to explain what was going on around us. He had just a few minutes every night to bring it all into our living rooms, and he did a great job. Those were way before the days of 24-hour cable news. But times changed, and Walter Cronkite retired. Still, he refused to fade from the public when it came time to worry about the relationship between journalists and the politicians they covered. Walter Cronkite knew reporters had the potential to become celebrities and sometimes “go soft” with the “bigwigs” to get them to sit down for “celebrity” interviews. He knew reporters could potentially overshadow the events they covered. He knew “balance and accuracy” in reporting took time and hard work. He also knew that American journalism as practiced by other “corporate conglomerates” sometimes lost patience with the time and expense that quality journalism requires, as well as the controversy it sometimes generates. He knew it was too easy for editors to demand “fast copy” that covered complicated issues, but didn’t take too much space or time on-air or in print. In the age of fast food, we developed a taste for “fast news,” and, in my opinion, he fought the trend for a long time. He spoke about “distortion by compression,” how compressing the complexities of the day’s news events often left out critical details that the public needed to know to better understand what was happening around them. It’s funny how his concerns so long ago still affect us today. I was lucky enough to meet Walter

Cronkite several times. As a student at the University of Miami, I visited CBS News in New York as part of a class project. I think it was 1968 or 1969. I was welcomed to watch the CBS Evening News in person and was introduced to Mr. Cronkite and the incredible staff that surrounded him. I shook his hand, sat inside some editorial meetings and was impressed by his intensity about the CBS Evening News broadcast that night. I was even more surprised by what a “regular guy” he was and by how much he worried whether his broadcast covered stories that affected his audience. Several years later, a local story I filmed with Ike Seamans at WTVJ made its way onto the “Cronkite Show” that night. I couldn’t believe how great I felt to be part of his CBS Evening News broadcast. A few years later, Mr. Cronkite was stuck in South Florida following a business trip because New York was snowed-in. He couldn’t fly back home to be on the air that night. My story from the Ralph Renick Report on tourists stranded at Miami International Airport was picked up by CBS News to explain why Mr. Cronkite wasn’t at his famous desk for that show. Again, I couldn’t believe how proud I felt to be on the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, even if it was only to report why he wasn’t there that night. He touched my career and I know he touched so many other co-workers here at CBS4 in Miami and in the industry. But he also taught me about the balance between getting news on the air everyday and making sure it was right. News is not just “black and white.” Many issues we report are complicated and include a lot of “shades of gray.” A reporter’s job is about making sure all sides of a story are fully explored. That way, the public can make up its own mind about the news it hears. And that’s a tough balancing act today, just as it was 40 years ago at the height of the “Cronkite Evening News.” Walter Cronkite leaves an incredible legacy. His dedication and quest for excellence continues to drive broadcast journalists all over the country today. Meeting “Uncle Walter” will remain a special memory with me forever. And his challenge to us — to strive for excellence in every broadcast and every story — remains as well.

Teenagers across the U.S. will soon be filling their backpacks with supplies for the 2009-10 school year. In Europe, South America and Asia, foreign exchange students still are waiting to hear that a family has opened its heart and home to host them for the school year. Start the new school year by learning about another culture and forming an international friendship. Your family can make it possible for one of these students to start packing their supplies to come experience life in the U.S. By the time the school year has ended you will both have a backpack full of memories that will last a lifetime. The non-profit CASE (Cultural Academic Student Exchange) exchange student program is making its final push before the school year starts to find volunteer homes in Florida for high school age foreign exchange students who will arrive in

AUGUST 31, 2009

mid-August to attend a semester or year of schooling in the U.S. Each student has his or her own medical insurance, spending money, and has expressed a true desire to become a participating member of an American family — pitching in on everything from household chores to family discussions. In return the student will share his or her culture and unique way of thinking with the host family and new American school friends. In particular, the program is looking for a host family for a 15-year-old boy from Mexico who is an avid tennis player and a 17-year old from Sweden who says he practices ice hockey three times a week and enjoys all sports. BY RICHARD YAGER First Bank of Miami (FBM) broke ground for its new Kendall branch office on July 27. The event was celebrated by the company’s chief officers and senior management with principals of the general contractor, Jaxi Builders Inc. of Miami, and Rodriguez & Quiroga, building architects. “This is a very important area in the growth of Miami and fits well into an existing objective to add coverage and convenience to existing clients and a new market area for the bank,” said Jorge I. Triay, president and CEO for the bank. Triay was joined by Raul R. Garcia, bank’s Executive Committee chair, for the traditional hardhat and silver-plated shovel groundbreaking ceremony as bank executives and guests toasted with fluted glasses of champagne. Opening is anticipated in one year for FBM’s sixth Miami-Dade location and its first in Kendall, on N. Kendall Drive (SW 88th Street), one block west of the Don Shula Expressway (SR 874). The three-story structure at 9851 N. Kendall Dr. will be 100 percent occu-

pied by bank personnel and is anticipated to employ a 25-member staff. Earning a Superior Rating in the banking rating system, “First Bank is looking forward to bringing to the Kendall community the same type of personalized banking that has been the cornerstone of our success,” Triay said. “At a time when other institutions are scaling down their operations, First Bank has a conservative growth plan and is looking for additional opportunities to continue to expand with conservative and traditional business values that have become the bank’s trademark over the past 13 years,” he added. “Our bank has traditionally maintained a very conservative lending policy that has maintained the bank away from existing problems affecting other financial institutions.” Beginning as a “de novo” community bank on June 10, 1996, First Bank of Miami executive offices and headquarters are located in Coral Gables at 255 Aragon Ave. Four branch offices have been opened at: 235 SE First St. in downtown Miami; 7101 SW Eighth St. in Westchester; 3650 SW Eighth St. (Douglas Road) and 1255 W. 49 St. in Hialeah.

Access to expert, comprehensive and compassionate care becomes a No. 1 priority for the nearly one in eight women who develops breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. With the opening of the new Baptist Health Breast Center, Baptist Health’s goal is to simplify — and expedite — access to exceptional care for the thousands of women facing the possibility of a lifechanging diagnosis. The Breast Center is located on the first floor of the South Miami Hospital Medical Arts Building, 6200 Sunset Dr., and serves as a centralized resource for patients with a suspected or confirmed breast cancer diagnosis. The Breast Center features a team of highly skilled breast cancer surgeons, specialized radiologists whose sole focus is breast imaging, and state-of-the-art diagnostic technology under one roof. Diagnostic services include breast MRI, breast biopsy and breast PET/PEM. “The expert physicians and technology are in place, but we also felt it was critically important to offer patients and families an ally, someone who could help guide them through the journey,” said Denise Harris, RN, vice president and chief nursing officer of Baptist Outpatient Services. “That’s where the CareCoach comes in — to serve as a trusted point of contact and centralized resource.” CareCoaches are available to help guide patients and families after a breast cancer diagnosis. Functions include appointment scheduling, connecting patients with support services such as social work, mental health counseling,

physical therapy and more, as well as providing compassionate support. “Most people think women are worried about what will happen during the course of treatment, but, in reality, they are most worried about how breast cancer is going to affect their families,” said Robert DerHagopian, MD, one of the Breast Center’s expert surgeons. “You have to plan the best treatment for the cancer, but you can’t forget about the patient’s emotional wellbeing. It helps to have an added layer of support.” The Breast Center’s décor also was carefully planned to provide a peaceful, healing environment for patients and families. The community is invited to tour the new Breast Center at the grand opening health fair scheduled for Saturday, June 27, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Free screenings for cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and osteoporosis will be offered, as well as a special unveiling, performances and refreshments. Randy Schenkman, MD, a retired Baptist Health radiologist, shared her vision with others and helped lay the groundwork for the Breast Center’s development. “It was Dr. Schenkman’s dream to have a place where women can receive the highest level of care while finding solace through the compassion of our team,” said Patricia Rosello, CEO of Baptist Outpatient Services. “If we can lessen someone’s anxiety by providing faster, more convenient access to expert care, we will have reached an important goal.” For more information about the services available at the Baptist Health Breast Center, call 786-662-4775.

The Florida Baptist Children’s Home (FBCH) sent out an SOS for back-toschool supplies, and private donors and local merchants teamed up to provide help that was urgently needed. The FBCH, a local orphanage established in 1954 and located at 7748 SW 95 Terr., experienced severe budget cuts this year. The children who reside in the home range from elementary to high school age and this year the prospect of new backpacks and back-to-school supplies seemed out of reach. Local donors and merchants decided to make a difference in the lives of the children and provide all the necessary supplies that would get them ready for school. The Paper Boutique of South Miami

generously provided stylish backpacks and back-to-school supplies, and on Monday, July 27, students from Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart gathered at the shop located at 7346 SW 57 Ave. in South Miami and volunteered to arrange, pack and gift wrap each of these backpacks. Other area retailers — Staples, Get Smart, Kids 4 Kids and private donors generously joined in the effort as well. “It is heartwarming to see the outpouring of support from local retailers and donors, in these tough economic times” said Susan Isenberg, who reached out and coordinated the effort. The Florida Baptist Children’s Home — which serves the needs of orphaned, abused, neglected and abandoned children — is in need of donations throughout the year. To help, call 305-271-4121.

The Way to A Man’s Heart Is Through His Stomach and The Way to Residents’ Hearts Is Through Great Dining Experiences BY KERRY GREEN MIAMI—Innovative retirement communities are dispelling the old-fashioned stereotypes of seniors and dining. As in any fine restaurant where gourmet dishes and appearances by the chef— dressed in crisp white toques—are expected, chefs at senior living communities are now raising the bar to meet residents’ growing demands. “Dining continues to be a common concern for many older adults moving to a senior living community,” said Helen Shaham, President of The Palace Management Group, one of South Florida’s leading companies specializing in senior housing and care. “Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner, the dining experience can often be the highlight of the day. It’s the time when residents gather to socialize and exchange stories with friends and neighbors. And, nothing goes with great conversation like a great dining.” At The Palace, the first step in creating memorable dining experiences for residents is the selection of chefs with extensive culinary backgrounds. Alon Hershkowitz, the executive chef for The Palace Renaissance and Royale Assisted Living Communities, offers a wealth of knowledge and talent, having worked at several of the most luxurious hotels and country clubs including The National Hotel in Miami Beach. Under his culinary guidance, Assisted and Catered Living residents enjoy fine dining which rivals some of the best gourmet restaurants. He marries their desire for comfort foods such as traditional meat loaf and brisket with his flair for creating French, Italian and Mediterranean specialties. As people age, they experience a natural decline in their senses of taste and smell. Chef Alon compensates by increasing the intensity of the dish’s flavor and aroma with fresh, roasted garlic and special sauces and purees. “Dining has to be both enjoyable and healthy,” said Chef Alon. “We understand the need for limited to almost NO sodium & sugar intake and use no-salt seasonings such as Mrs. Dash. We also offer a wide variety of sugar-free desserts.” Chef Alon along with our Gabriel Garrido, the Food Service Director at The Palace Suites, a luxury independent living community, believe there’s always a reason for a celebration and have cre-

ated themed dinners throughout the month to heighten residents dining experiences. “Palace residents are well traveled and have very high expectations,” said Garrido, who has been with the company for over 10 years. “Employees get their greatest satisfaction from seeing residents happy; therefore, we go above and beyond to exceed these expectations while shattering the stereotypes of dining at a senior living community.” The Renaissance and Royale residents enjoy specialty dinners twice per month. Past themes have included German, Asian and Mediterranean. Suites’ residents enjoy gourmet dinners on Thursday nights with menu items including filet mignon and shellfish. Also, the Suites’ Happy Hour is kicked up a notch regularly, featuring an international theme and small plates from the region along with complementary entertainment. Recently themed Happy Hours have included a Spanish Tapas event featuring over 20 different appetizers along with flamenco dancers and an Italian Antipasto Party with over 15 delicious offerings including proscuitto di parma with fresh tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella. Holidays and special occasions are yet another way The Palace communities make the dining experience special. The Palace Suites recently set a record when it hosted the largest Mother’s Day brunch buffet for over140 residents and their families in addition to hosting a myriad of unique brunches throughout the year including a Sunday Gospel Brunch, a Country Western Brunch, an Oktoberfest Brunch, Father’s Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Xmas Day & Hanukkah buffets, and more. Residents also have opportunities to voice their opinions about the dining experience at The Palace. In addition to talking with the Chef as he visits their table every dinner to solicit feedback, they can share their thoughts during the monthly Resident Council meeting or write their comments in the Palace biannual Resident Satisfaction Surveys. Our chefs and dining room mangers take other steps to further maximize resident dining satisfaction. White linen tablecloths adorn each table and are accented by fresh flowers. Residents also enjoy a glass of wine and freshly baked bread (baked in-house) with dinner, and the young wait staff is educated daily about the Menu, the Daily Specials

& their ingredients and how they should be served. “It’s not simply about food on a plate,” said Chef Alon. “It’s about service. The dining experience begins even before the server arrives at the table; personal service is paramount. Here, the dining staff knows residents by name and anticipate their preferences.” Chef Alon has launched an engaging, interactive cooking show too. Twice per month, he prepares dishes such as stir fry vegetables, soups and meatballs, taking residents through the food preparation process and cooking stages. Donned in aprons and hats, residents cook along, and eagerly look forward to the finished product. “The Palace chefs don’t simply make meals, they make the entire dining experience incredible,” said Shaham. “Our food services satisfaction surveys are extremely high and residents take great pride in inviting their friends and family for dinner.”

Helen Shaham and her husband Jacob have been operating Senior Living Communities for the past 30 years. The Palace Suites in Kendall is a luxury Independent Living Community for active seniors. In addition, The Palace at Kendall campus is home to two Assisted Living Residences and a Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. They also operate The Palace Gardens Assisted Living Community in Homestead, Homestead Manor Nursing Home and The Palace @ Home, a Medicare Certified Home Health Agency. Their two newest projects are The Palace at Weston – Luxury Living for Those 55 and Over, and The Palace TelAviv, a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Israel. They have two communities under development – The Palace at Weston Senior Living and The Palace at Coral Gables, Independent & Assisted Living. More information can be obtained by calling 305-271-2220 or by visiting The Palace website at www.ThePalace.org.

BY ROBERT HAMILTON Scrapbookers in Miami worried that they were losing their favorite store back in March, but new owners Nana and Vanessa not only have re-opened Scrapbooks & Stuff, they have remodeled and restocked it with the latest products and classes. Scrapbooks & Stuff, 8811 SW 132 St., the premier scrapbooking store in Miami, has reopened under new ownership. After Kobi Bender and Lisa Acosta closed their long-standing scrapbooking store in March, scrapbookers worried that they would no longer have a place to scrapbook and shop for their supplies. These worries became unnecessary when Nana Campana and Vanessa Vasquez, local scrapbookers and entrepreneurs, purchased the store

and reopened it in April. For more than eight years, Scrapbooks & Stuff has helped Miami scrapbookers with all of their scrapbooking needs. From papers to embellishments, invitations to stickers, Scrapbooks & Stuff has been the place to look for necessary supplies, excellent classes and indispensable resources. Since reopening, business has thrived as new product lines and classes have been brought in to the newly remodeled store. Although purchasing a store during an economic downturn may seem strange, Nana and Vanessa thought that keeping such a great scrapbooking resource (and one of the few remaining scrapbooking stores in Miami) was worth the risk. School for Advanced Studies named among nation’s elite BY TARNELL CARROLL The only full-time dual enrollment public high school in Miami-Dade County is enjoying top billing this week thanks to prominent recognition in Newsweek magazine’s recently released list of the nation’s top public high schools in 2009. Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School for Advanced Studies (SAS), ranked 15th among public high schools nationwide, making it the highest ranked school in Miami-Dade County to receive the distinction of appearing on the list. The school, designed for academically talented 11th and 12th grade students who seek a rigorous Advanced Placement (AP) and college curriculum, is no stranger to the limelight. In fact, SAS has been on a rapid ascent in Newsweek’s annual top high schools list. Since 2006, the school has risen from 1,210th in the nation, to its current position of 15. And, last year, the school received the highest scores on the science portion of the FCAT exam, surpassing other high schools in MiamiDade County. “The school’s success is due in large part to the support Miami Dade College provides our program,” said Guillermo Muñoz, principal of the School for Advanced Studies. “Our students are very lucky to have the opportunity to attend a high quality institution such as MDC while still in high school. The experience they get by attending college for two years is something that they point to as a key to the successes they have come to enjoy once they graduate from our program.” The Newsweek rankings were derived by calculating the number of AP, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests taken by students at a school divided by the number of seniors graduating the same year. Many SAS students graduate with both an Associate in Arts degree and a high school diploma as a result of success on the AP exams, CLEP exams, and summer school at MDC. Established during the 1988-89 school year as a small program located at MDC’s North Campus, SAS is a combined effort of MDC and Miami-Dade

County Public Schools (MDCPS). Since opening more than 20 years ago, it has expanded to a total of four MDC campuses: Homestead, Kendall, North and Wolfson. Each semester, students are enrolled in three college dual-enrollment courses taught by MDC faculty, and three AP high school courses taught by MDCPS faculty. One hundred percent of SAS students graduate and continue their academic studies at colleges and universities in Florida, throughout the nation, or at top institutions abroad. Some have been accepted at such prestigious universities as Princeton, Cornell, Brown, NYU, Yale, the University of Chicago, Emory, Stanford, University of Edinburgh, and all the public universities in the state of Florida. “We will work hard to make sure that SAS continues to bring recognition and accolades to this community, the public school system, and the college,” Muñoz added. Should I call the police to talk to my out-of-control child? BY MICHELLE ESTLUND, Criminal Defense Attorney

Should parents call the police when a child refuses to obey them or borrows the family vehicle without permission, when a teenager punches a hole in a wall or threatens physical violence to a parent or sibling? Today, there is no clear cut answer. Years ago, despairing parents might call the police in hopes that an officer giving the disruptive child a stern lecture might work where they have exhausted every other form of discipline. Parents felt that the neighborhood police department served as a back-up in their arsenal of parenting tools. In return, police departments often obliged and used those visits as a means of strengthening relationships within the community. In today’s world, this model of police/community interaction is no longer valid. An unnecessary call to the police may become a loss rather than a gain, especially for a child’s future. With most police departments lacking the time needed to

mediate non-emergency family disputes, police officers rarely have the authority to exercise the same discretion they once did. The parent should understand that once the police arrive and they determine that a crime has occurred—physical violence, threatening behavior, an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle—the child may be arrested regardless of the parent’s wishes. The child may then have to face formal charges in juvenile court or, for more serious charges, in adult court. If safety of the family or the child is the major concern, a 911 call is still warranted. But the parent and the child should be aware that once that call has been made the decisions about the outcome of the event are in the hands of the judicial system, not the family. An arrest record can affect a child’s future acceptance into colleges, entrance into the armed forces, and career choices. If the police have already become involved, parents would do well to consult with an attorney with extensive experience in the juvenile court system to determine the effect of any decisions on their child’s future. Michelle Estlund is a criminal defense attorney practicing in Florida since 1995. She can be reached at 305-448-0077 or mestlund@estlundlaw.com. For more information go to www.estlundlaw.com.

A few things to know about protecting your home from a hurricane

Earn a Masters Degree in Oriental Medicine in only 36 months Become a Licensed Massage Therapist in only 9 months

BY BOB CARSON

We have exactly what you’re looking for! Financial Aid is available for all who qualify! Classes are forming now!

There is a price we pay to live in paradise — hurricanes. Fortunately, we know when a hurricane is approaching and can prepare. Preparations include adequate supplies of food, water, gasoline and cash. The important thing is to protect yourself and the place where you store all the supplies — your home. Protecting your home from a hurricane means wind protection. You must protect the “envelope” of your home. Protecting the envelope means securing all openings against wind intrusion. Our building code requires storm protection to meet minimum standards for positive and negative wind pressure. The pressure of the wind blowing against your windows and doors is a positive wind load. Most of us can understand the importance of protecting against flying debris and the force of a 150 mph wind. What is somewhat more difficult to understand is a negative wind load. As the wind passes around your home, it creates an extremely low pressure on the opposite side of the blowing wind. This negative wind pressure can suck unprotected windows right out of the wall. We found out during Hurricane Andrew that negative wind pressure can even pull storm protection off the wall if it is not installed properly. There are several “code approved” forms of hurricane protection. All products must meet a minimum standard in Miami-Dade County. Products are not tested to the fail point; they are only tested to meet the minimum standard. Forms of approved protection include storm shutters, protective screens and impact windows. Homeowners can use a combination of products, as long as the product is approved and installed properly. Each product has some advantages and disadvantages. The following is a basic list of approved products: • Storm panels — available in aluminum or galvanized steel, relatively inexpensive, but labor intensive to deploy and remove, require storage space. • Accordion and roll-up shutters — made from extruded aluminum, range in price from moderate to expensive, easy deployment, permanently mounted, require no storage space. • Protective screens — made from steel, Kevlar Mesh or polypropylene, moderate to expensive, can be permanently mounted or removable, easy deployment, best for patio

Contractors must be licensed and insured to obtain a permit. Don’t be fooled by some contractors who offer to reduce the price if the homeowner pulls their own permit. perimeter enclosure. • Impact windows — frames made from aluminum or vinyl, moderate to expensive, no shutters required, passive protection from storms, enhanced home security, enhanced energy efficiency, federal tax credit available on most styles. PROPER INSTALLATION IS IMPORTANT Storm protection products, as many other building products, require a building permit. Building permits are a homeowner’s assurance that they have the right product installed correctly. If you’re trying to qualify for discounts on wind storm insurance premiums, get a permit. If you have an insurance claim after a storm, you better have the permit ready for the adjuster. Contractors must be licensed and insured to obtain a permit. Don’t be fooled by some contractors who offer to reduce the price if the homeowner pulls their own permit. This is a red flag that the contractor may not be licensed or insured. A few hundred dollars for a building permit is a small price to pay for what may happen if there is an accident on the job or the contractor disappears. Craftsmanship and customer service are what separate quality contractors from the rest. Windows and shutters can be installed according to the building code and still look terrible. Since construction is not an exact science, all homes have slightly different window and door sizes. Quality contractors should make the product fit the opening, not just assume standard sizes. It’s your home, aesthetics are important.

Facing foreclosure? Is bankruptcy an option for you? BY DANIA S. FERNANDEZ, ESQ., Attorney at Law Bankruptcy is a perfectly legitimate way to stop foreclosures and repossessions, put an end to lawsuits, protect paychecks from garnishments and regain control of your life. When filing for bankruptcy, it must be filed correctly in order to for it be successful. It is important to consult a bankruptcy attorney or debt relief lawyer in your area to ensure that you fully understand your options regarding bankruptcy and whether this is the best decision for your financial future. Personal bankruptcy is filed either as a Chapter 7 or a Chapter 13: Chapter 7—Liquidation—wipes out most of your debts and in return, you may have to give up some of your property. If you are considering a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and you are behind in your mortgage, make certain that you first reach a loan modification/loan workout or refinance with your lender. In the Chapter 7 Bankruptcy there will not be a loan modification option of your existing mortgage and, therefore, if you stop paying your mortgage you could lose your home. Your homestead is exempt. However, it can be foreclosed on if you do not pay. Chapter 13–Reorganization— enables you to pay off all or a portion of your debts during a three to five year period, yet does not require you to give up any of your assets to pay creditors. As long as you keep making payments, creditors will not bother you for payment or continue the foreclosure against your property. In the Chapter 13 Bankruptcy you can save your house.

The following is a list of facts you should know about filing bankruptcy: • Bankruptcy is a matter of public record. • A credit counseling course and financial management course are required. • Creditors will be prohibited from contacting you concerning your debt. • Florida law will exempt certain assets. • You may suffer some discrimination in future employment opportunities. • A stigma may still be attached to filing bankruptcy. • A record of filing for bankruptcy may remain on your credit profile for up to 10 years. • By eliminating your debt in Chapter 7 or making payments in a Chapter 13, you will immediately improve your credit score. In the midst of an economic crisis, please try not to forget the importance of life and your priorities. I have clients who are falling apart not only financially, but also emotionally and physically. Saving your home is not the only solution. A job is needed that can pay for the revised monthly payment. Activities to stimulate good health and family events to create memorable moments with children, family and friends are a must. Take all the necessary steps to preserve what is important to you by taking advantage all of your options. There are options available for you. And, more continue to come with evolving federal and state laws. Know your rights and know your options. Call an attorney today to guide you towards stabilizing your life. For more information on foreclosure, loan modifications and bankruptcy, go to www.daniafernandez.com. 2010 Volvo XC60 aims at new generation of buyers Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Volvo hit a home run with the XC90 sport utility vehicle; they’ve done it again with the new XC60. The 2010 Volvo XC60 is a new entry in the Small Premium Utility segment, one of the fasting growing markets in the auto industry. It has beautiful styling, all the latest safety technology, outstanding comfort and dynamic performance, and it was designed to capture a new generation of Volvo buyers, while retaining those already loyal to the brand. The XC60’s styling blends a muscular lower body with a sporty coupe-like cab. A new trapezoidal grille holds an enlarged Volvo logo and a strong shoulder line blends into the rear liftgate flanked by LED taillights. The XC60 is available in only one model, the T6 AWD. It’s powered by a 3.0liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 281 hp and 295 pounds-

feet of torque. Power is transferred to the ground via a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission and Volvo’s All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction. Oversize 18inch wheels (19 inches are optional) along with 9.1 inches of ground clearance enable the XC60 to cross terrain that would be impossible in a conventional passenger car. Enhanced Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) is standard, along with a new feature called Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) that allows for more stable driving when towing. The XC60 offers many new systems, including a driver support system aimed at preventing or mitigating collisions occurring at speeds of 19 mph or less. It utilizes a closing velocity sensor to help determine whether a collision is likely. Depending on the closing speed, City Safety will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the XC60 to help avoid a rear-end collision or lessen its impact. The XC60’s cabin reflects the design of the exterior, keyed an ultra-slim center control panel with an optional new integrated navigation screen that’s angled slightly toward the driver. been re-designed Volvo’s first panoramic roof is optional and offers increased light and an open-air feeling with two laminated glass panels. The XC60 offers HD Radio as standard equipment, updating radio to digital quality. FM broadcast quality improves to the level of a typical CD, while AM broadcast quality is improved to the prior level of FM. The XC60’s standard high performance sound system includes AUX and USB inputs to allow connection and control of personal music devices such as iPods, memory sticks and other media players.

Sirius Satellite radio with a complimentary six-month subscription and Bluetooth hands-free phone interface also are standard. Audiophiles have a choice between the optional Dynaudio Premium Sound System with a 650-watt amplifier, 12 Dynaudio speakers and Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES Aries - You are likely to be a bit confused this week, because there are terrific spiritual energies affecting your personality and ego, and you are experiencing a disillusion of the boundaries you normally keep so strongly between yourself and the emotions of others.

Libra - You are going to feel sensual, romantic and idealistic this week. If you are single, you may meet someone who is highly attractive, intelligent and who returns your attention this week. You'll know it's the right one because you'll be able to talk for hours.

Taurus - Spiritual growth is reaching a plateau and you feel that you need to find a spiritual leader or mentor to teach you. But are you sure that is what you really need? There is a terrific book called "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him". Maybe you will find some of the answers there.

Scorpio - You have a lot of paperwork to

Gemini - It's about networking this week. Not the computer kind, but the distinctly old-fashioned kind of networking, where people of like mind get together to share interests over coffee or beer. A group meeting or get-together could be valuable to your future goals.

Sagittarius - You are full of creative energy and vigor this week. You may decide to take up painting, drawing or a musical instrument. It will be relaxing and will help you connect with something you felt was lost a long time ago. If you have children it may be time for piano lessons.

Cancer - You'll have wonderful social energy this week. You may not have felt like going out much lately, but suddenly you have some wonderfully enjoyable opportunities. Someone you know may introduce you to a sport or hobby with the ability to dramatically change your life for the better.

Capricorn - Your holidays don't have to be "perfect" in order to be positive and purposeful. If you let go of your need for everyone to get along, a strange sense of peace could come over you that lifts the stress and the drama. Under all that you really do all love one another.

Leo - Travel and educational opportunities

Aquarius - You are in demand this week -

fly in fast and furious this week, presenting you with interesting challenges. You may be asked to attend a recreational or entertainment event that involves a different culture or some new and unusual sport you have not tried.

you may be forgiven for answering the phone with "Grand Central Station, how can I help you?" because you will get so many calls you may not be able to deal with them all. The main culprits are siblings and friends who really are just in a chatterbox mood.

Virgo - Your have been going through powerful religious and spiritual changes, and may find the advice or guidance of a relative or family member extremely helpful in sorting out your next step along the path. Don't be afraid of change, it can bring great blessings.

Pisces - Your financial interests are tied to your home, residence or family in some way this week, and you may be able to locate some equity or resources that will help you get started on a home improvement project, renovation or home purchase plan. You might have to fight with someone over the details though.

handle this week, some of it will be frustrating and challenging, but it has the potential to have a positive impact on your career goals. Keep plugging at it, the rewards are coming sooner, and they may be greater than you think.
