BY GARY ALAN RUSE he Village of Palmetto Bay’s participation in the Rain Barrel program run by Miami-Dade County and the University of Florida seems to be yielding results, according to Bill Kress, spokesperson for the village, with more residents signing up since the word first got out. Village Councilmember Howard Tendrich, who has a rain barrel of his own at home, thinks that’s a good thing. “It’s a great program,” Tendrich said. “Whatever we can do to conserve is so important. My wife uses Rain barrels collect rainwater from roof gutters. water from the rain barrel to water her plants.” Tendrich said that anyone concerned er so that if one starts to overflow the about the possibility of mosquitoes using surplus water goes into the other barthe water in the barrels to breed need not rel,” Tendrich said. “I feel that saving worry, because the special rain barrels water is an important thing. Area Mentors (BAM) Summer Youth Athletic League. During the award ceremony conducted at the Palmetto Bay Village Center, students, coaches and supporters of the program received trophies, team pictures, plaques, and other gifts while they enjoyed food and refreshments. The summer camp was designed as

a mentoring program for local youth. From June 15 to July 23, 80 participating students played basketball twice a week on eight girls and boys teams. The students attended local middle schools: Cutler Ridge, Centennial, Arthur Mays, and Richmond Heights.

Scholarship renamed to honor woman pilot BY ASRA JAWAID Fran Sargent, 90, of Cutler Bay received the honor of having the Griner Memorial Scholarship renamed for her during the June meeting of the Florida Goldcoast Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, an international organization of pilots. The meeting took place at the 94th Aero Squadron restaurant in Miami. Sargent has been a member of the Ninety-Nines since 1943. “My father took me to the airport at age 21 to show me airplanes [up close],” she said. She began flying airplanes during World War II, when she became what’s known as a “WASP,” or Women Airforce Service Pilot. “Because men were flying in the war, women were needed to fly within the U.S.,” she said. During her time as a WASP, Sargent flew both military and civilian flights, flying planes such as the Cessna T-50, the UC-78 Bobcat and the Curtis SB2C Helldiver, among many others. “People didn’t think women were appropriate to fly back then,” Sargent recalled. Clearly, this belief didn’t stop her. After doing her duty during the war, Sargent opted for marriage and children. At different points during this post-flight period, she was a mother, kindergarten teacher and secretary. Sargent, who was born on July 24, the same birthday as Amelia Earheart, likes the example she has set for female pilots who came after her. “It’s been very nice because they’ve thanked me for doing these things. We did it because we enjoyed it. People write to me and say, ‘I did this because you said I could.’” Mary Givens, Sargent’s caretaker for the past two years, has witnessed the appreciation Sargent has garnered firsthand.

“Her former students still come back and treat her to dinner and fill her in on their lives,” Givens said. Over the years, Sargent has been honored with a variety of scholarships and awards, all related to her aviation experiences. Among them are the Amelia Earheart Scholarship, Outstanding Contribution to General Aviation Award, annual Wright Brothers Award and induction into the International Forest of Friendship in 1999. Of these, she said she is proudest of the Wright Brothers Award. And the awards keep coming. This fall she plans to travel to Washington, DC, to accept the Congressional Gold Medal along with other surviving WASPs. According to the website <www.wingsovermiami.com>, the award is, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor a civilian may receive. In this case, the Congressional Gold Medal is especially noteworthy because during their service, WASPs never were awarded full military status, were never considered for officer status and afterward were not granted veteran status until 1977. If she doesn’t feel up to the trip, a member of her family will collect the award on her behalf. From 1961 to 1986, Sargent was a professor of general aviation at then MiamiDade Community College. In fact, she was the first female professor in the school’s aviation department. Sargent received a bachelor of science degree from Florida Atlantic University in 1967 and then an MBA from the University of Miami the following year. The scholarship being renamed for her, the Griner Memorial Scholarship, was originally named for Les Griner, a fellow student and good friend of Sargent. He passed away a couple of years ago, and she was named his “successor.”

average of 52 inches of rainfall each year, most of which washes over lawns and pavement and carries fertilizers and other chemicals into the local waterways. An inch of rainfall over a 1,000square-foot area yields in excess of 600 gallons of water. A rain barrel is an inexpensive means of capturing and storing some of this water for later use. Officials say that installing a rain barrel not only helps reduce pollution, but also provides a supply of free non-chlorinated soft water for irrigating your landscape. The Miami-Dade County Cooperative Extension Service offers a series of Rain Barrel Workshops which give residents an opportunity to learn about important water conservation issues and teaches how to construct and install rain barrels. Special workshops can also be arranged for schools, homeowners associations, and garden clubs. “What we do in the workshop is show how the rain barrel is a tool to collect and conserve water,” said Barbara McAdam, a native South Floridian who works with the county program. “But

there’s more to the workshops than just the rain barrels. We show how there are many ways to save water in the landscape, and even show how they do it in other parts of the world.” McAdam said that the Cooperative Extension Service, begun to help farmers, is about to celebrate its 100th anniversary. She said that education is what the Extension Service is all about. “Sixty percent of storm-water pollution comes from what homeowners do in their backyards,” McAdam said. “If we have enough people doing the right thing, then we’ll have something to leave our children and our grandchildren.” The cost is $45 for rain barrel and materials; $10 for workshop only. The village scheduled a workshop on Saturday, Aug. 8, but additional workshops are still scheduled: Saturday, Sept. 12, 10 a.m.-noon, at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden; Saturday, Oct. 17, 10 a.m.-noon, at the Deering Estate Auditorium, and Saturday, Nov. 14, 10 a.m.-noon, at the Deering Estate Auditorium. For more information on rain barrels and attending a Rain Barrel Workshop, contact Barbara McAdam or Lize Luna at 305-248-3311, ext. 242, or visit the website at <http://miami-dade.ifas.ufl.edu/>.

Students were required to meet certain criteria in order to participate, including maintaining a 2.0 grade point average, not missing more than two games, and displaying a positive attitude and sportsman-like conduct at all times. As they completed the program they took part in a playoff tournament where the girls and boys teams from Centennial Middle School were crowned champions. The BAM camp was a collaborative effort organized by Mayor Alvarez, Commissioners Moss and Sorenson, Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) South District, Neighborhood Resource Unit (NRU), Cutler Bay Policing Unit, Cutler Bay Business Association (CBBA), and Dr. Larry Feldman, member, Miami-Dade

Public Schools. The students and their families were honored at the award ceremony on July 28, with the students receiving book bags for the upcoming school year. Each winning team also voted for its “Most Valuable Player” and was awarded trophies and sport caps. The teams’ coaches were recognized with team pictures, and valuable contributors to the program were awarded plaques and certificates by Sorenson. “I’m extremely proud of the young men and women who demonstrated not only athletic prowess, but teamwork and sportsmanship during the BAM program this summer,” Sorenson said. “Thank you to the mentors who took the time to give these students a fun and productive summer.”

Get the low-down on the new village budget Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR

AROUND TOWN Village residents eager to find out what’s what in the new budget for the Village of Palmetto Bay can take a look at the entire budget document on the official village website, which can be found at http://www.palmettobayfl.gov/ Actually we should say the proposed budget, since there is still work to be done and the usual public input. As the website puts it — “The 2009-10 Proposed Budget offers an inside look at how the Village transforms your tax dollars and other revenue sources into better services, safer streets, and more playful parks.” We think it’s worth a look. And by the way, also on the village website is an important notice about the big infrastructure project that’s been in the works since practically the ice age. “Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) recently provided an update to the South Dade business community on details of its Palmetto Bay water and sewer project. New water and sewer lines in ‘Basin B,’ located in the Village’s FT&I district, will provide needed fire protection and the infrastructure to help facilitate economic development in this area.” Also worth checking out. We can’t get away with anything these

days! Although we tried to poke a little fun in our last column at the apparent conflict in two items closely posted on the Village website, regarding the Rain Barrel program and getting rid of things in your yard that can breed mosquitoes, we received a number of calls from readers who correctly pointed out that the special Rain Barrels used in the program have wire mesh screens fitted over the tops of them that prevent the little buggers from getting in to lay their eggs. Check out the story on page 1 for more info. Joint Networker session of West Kendall Business Association and Colombian American Chamber of Commerce session set for next Tuesday at Gatsby’s/Kendall, 8675 SW 124th Avenue, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Complimentary admission and hors d’ouvres and cash bar will give members and guests a chance to meet other business folks in a friendly atmosphere. MIA Casino? County racing to generate revenues R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY “Ladies and gentlemen, the horses for the third race at Gulfstream, excuse me, I mean at MIA Park. (Miami International Airport Racing Park). While waiting for the start of the race (or your flight) try your hand at the slot machines or the blackjack tables.” “Get your name in for the once-a-day drawing to win a free roundtrip ticket for two on American Airlines. Travel time restricted to days the county commission is in session.” “Employees, please take a bus to work as your employee parking lot has been temporarily converted into a horse racetrack.” Come on county commissioners. You are making a mistake. If attendance is limited to 1,000 spectators at the track due to current zoning laws, why race horses? Try dogs, they take up less

space, and the event will cost taxpayers less. You can still install slot machines, which will generate income to help cover the cost of running the county. Hey, you might even generate enough money to cover the shortfall at the performing arts center. That’s after you cover the shortfall at the airport. Airport employees had better get up super early to catch a bus inasmuch as the county, due to budgetary restrictions, will be eliminating some bus routes and making fewer trips on the remaining runs. Now to the story behind the story: County administrators (don’t blame our county commission) came up with the idea of installing slot machines at Miami International Airport. With all the flight delays it might give the restless flyers something to do while they wait for their flight. Please note: Local citizens, those not flying but looking for a little action, wouldn’t be permitted go to the airport to play the slots. The county would restrict gambling to those travelers who already have checked in for their flights.

––– VIEWPOINT ––– County administrators recognize that the airport at Las Vegas has slots, so why not Miami. In case you missed the point, the reason behind the slots at the airport is not to entertain the traveler — it is to generate dollars. The county needs every dollar it can lay its hands on due to the precipitous drop in real estate tax revenues. However, there is a problem. You can’t just have slots, or other games of chance, unless it is associated with another form of gambling, such as horse racing. Our legislators in Tallahassee passed enabling legislation in an effort to get racing back at Hialeah. Hialeah could never make it back only as a horse track so gambling on slots and table games would be needed. This same legislation could apply to Miami International Airport. The only problem is that MIA, like most other airports in the world, was not designed for horse racing. But, with

our fine county administration at work: a few adjustments, build a small 1,000 seat stadium, clear out a few parking spaces at the employee parking lot east of the airport and by magic, you have a racetrack. Now, our county administrators must make a deal with one of our local racetracks to manage the MIA racetrack. After all, our county administrators have their hands too full gambling with our tax dollars, budget shortfalls and constant problems with federal government intrusion into various county departments, to find time to run a racetrack.

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY The latest national housing indexes tell a story of homes starting to sell again in almost all key markets of the country. Bargain hunters are snapping up rock-bottom deals, another possible sign some critical housing markets are finally bottoming out. Record breaking foreclosures and layoffs are helping bargain hunters find good deals as banks and financially stressed owners are forced to sell off property. Nationally, 13 out of 20 key cities show improvements and the best growth during the past three years. Even here in South Florida, single-family home sales are improving. But we still remain at a six-year low according to the CaseSchiller study. Our sales index is down about 49 percent from its height just three years ago. Still, the overbuilt condo markets are expected to take several more years to sell off. Matt McGrath, a Coral Gables-based financial planner with Evensky & Katz, says, “The latest numbers in South Florida are showing that prices are still falling, but at a declining rate. And if it continues following this trend, we might

actually turn positive in the not too distant future.” It turns out we’re still a “hot” area for bargain hunters with foreign investors making up about 30 percent of the latest buyers. The sale of single-family homes jumped 54 percent over last summer, with the struggling condo market up almost 20 percent. Sales on deeply discounted properties are showing almost a yearlong gain, McGrath said. “We have not bottomed out yet, but it looks like we are getting awfully close.” While home prices are down, insurance costs are still higher than the rest of the country, and property taxes have yet to drop to reflect actual market losses. The South Florida home and condo markets may still take a while to show a solid recovery like other parts of the country. “We haven’t quite bottomed,” McGrath cautions. “Our bottom is going to be when prices stop falling from one month to the next and were not quite there yet.” It’s still not easy to get the cheapest financing on a new purchase or to refinance to lower rate on existing mortgages. So how long until we start seeing some badly needed new residential construction to get people back to work? Some forecasters predict several more years, but we are getting closer every day.

Workshop helps nonprofits seeking ‘stimulus’ funding BY VANESSA PUIG Miami Southridge Senior High School’s auditorium was filled — not with students, but with representatives from local nonprofits eager to learn more about how to access federal stimulus supported services and programs for their organizations and clients. One hundred seventeen nonprofit leaders attended Miami-Dade Commission chair Dennis C. Moss’ presentation on President Obama’s Recovery Act and the impact to nonprofit services and clients in Miami-Dade. Moss hosted the presentation in an effort to assist nonprofits who are struggling to find information. “As someone who works in the nonprofit industry, I know that it is harder than ever for social service organizations to find dollars to maintain their programming,” said Moss, who also is executive director of the Richmond Perrine Optimist Club. “With an economic recession and the county’s budget shortfall, many nonprofits are in a financial crisis. However, thanks to President Obama’s stimulus package, the county and other agencies

have the opportunity to competitively apply for funding to deliver services among local service groups who reach our residents in greatest need.” Speakers from various agencies reached out to the participating nonprofits and offered information on how much stimulus funding was being received and applied for to help social service programs. The agencies who presented included the county’s Office of Grants Coordination, Alliance for Aging, Miami-Dade Community Action Agency, Miami-Dade Department of Human Services, Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe,

Florida Department of Children and Families, Miami-Dade’s Homeless Trust, Miami-Dade Public Housing Agency, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami-Dade Office of Community and Economic Development, South Florida Workforce, and the United Way of Miami-Dade. On Feb. 17, President Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), a $787 billion economic stimulus package and the largest one-time domestic spending program in U.S. history. To date, MiamiDade County has applied for more than $326 million in stimulus funding requests and received more than $115 million to provide residents with new and improved services in areas like workforce development, transportation, energy efficiency, education, infrastructure, and more. Daniel Wall, director of the Office of Grants Coordination, also explained how the funds potentially could reach nonprofits through competitive grants if the county is successful in getting some of the stimulus requests awarded. “We understand that grassroots organizations have strong ties to their communities and are on the ‘front lines’ of serving those most adversely affected by the economy,” Wall said. “The county is being extremely aggressive in its pursuit of stimulus funding for programs that will provide direct benefits to local communities and their residents, as well as help local nonprofit organizations to deliver those services.” For more information on funding opportunities for nonprofits, visit the Office of Grants Coordination’s website at <www.miamidade.gov/ogc> or call 305-375-4742. Local ARRA information can be found online at <www.miamidade.gov/recovery>.

Café Med celebrates first anniversary at The Falls

BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

For the past year, Café Med has been the place for families to go for dinner. The family neighborhood restaurant, located at The Falls near Bloomingdales, has a cuisine that includes numerous delicious Italian and Mediterranean dishes as well as homemade pizzas, pastas and seafood. Formerly known as Bice Grand Café, it was taken over by Frank Bernstein and business partner Fred Wright. The restaurant had been part of a chain, but they bought it away from the chain and changed the name to Café Med. It has no affiliation with the Café Med that was in Coconut Grove. Bernstein also renovated the décor to make the restaurant more inviting. He added a rug to improve acoustics and created a floral centerpiece as a focal point. It also helps break up the long dining room so the restaurant feels more intimate. Café Med is making good use of Florida’s sunshine and beautiful weather. Bernstein has seating for fifty on the patio and has plans to add a covering to protect diners from the elements on rainy days.

“It’s going to be a nice patio,” Bernstein said. Café Med also has a private room that can seat 40 where they host many private parties. When Bernstein took over the restaurant, he and chef Walter Peralta developed a new menu. “When we came here a year ago, we wanted to be a family neighborhood restaurant where people could come two or three times a week and not spend a lot of money,” he said. It didn’t take long for Café Med to become popular for Happy Hour. “I have entertainment four nights a week,” he said. Café Med offers 12 different wines by the glass including champagne. Food service also is available at the bar. When the recession hit, Café Med changed its Happy Hour to all day every day. “My appetizers are half price and all my drinks are half price, even top shelf,” he said. The appetizers are real food, not fried egg rolls or tiny portions. In fact, some people order a couple of appetizers and a drink and leave feeling full. Bernstein also lowered other meal prices. “It’s about giving back to the communi-

ty,” he said. “It’s working. Families come in have one or two appetizers and beer and pay less than fast food.” Café Med has Sunset Specials from 4 to 6:30 p.m. for $12.95. “I also have brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can choose from the brunch menu for $10.95,” he said. On Sundays, he has what he calls the Traditional Family Meal —spaghetti and meatballs plus a salad for $11.95. The table service also includes homemade bread and a trio of olive oil, roasted garlic or hummus or garlic butter. The restaurant has weekend brunch menus for $10.95. Because of the family friendly features and the reasonable prices, Bernstein has built up his business. They may come in the first time for Happy Hour and then return with their families. Bernstein is at the restaurant constantly so he can make sure that customers are satisfied. “I work very hard to make sure every guest is treated as a guest in my home,” he said. Café Med is located at 8888 SW 136 St. For information, call 305-232-8878.

The Way to A Man’s Heart Is Through His Stomach and The Way to Residents’ Hearts Is Through Great Dining Experiences BY KERRY GREEN MIAMI—Innovative retirement communities are dispelling the old-fashioned stereotypes of seniors and dining. As in any fine restaurant where gourmet dishes and appearances by the chef— dressed in crisp white toques—are expected, chefs at senior living communities are now raising the bar to meet residents’ growing demands. “Dining continues to be a common concern for many older adults moving to a senior living community,” said Helen Shaham, President of The Palace Management Group, one of South Florida’s leading companies specializing in senior housing and care. “Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner, the dining experience can often be the highlight of the day. It’s the time when residents gather to socialize and exchange stories with friends and neighbors. And, nothing goes with great conversation like a great dining.” At The Palace, the first step in creating memorable dining experiences for residents is the selection of chefs with extensive culinary backgrounds. Alon Hershkowitz, the executive chef for The Palace Renaissance and Royale Assisted Living Communities, offers a wealth of knowledge and talent, having worked at several of the most luxurious hotels and country clubs including The National Hotel in Miami Beach. Under his culinary guidance, Assisted and Catered Living residents enjoy fine dining which rivals some of the best gourmet restaurants. He marries their desire for comfort foods such as traditional meat loaf and brisket with his flair for creating French, Italian and Mediterranean specialties. As people age, they experience a natural decline in their senses of taste and smell. Chef Alon compensates by increasing the intensity of the dish’s flavor and aroma with fresh, roasted garlic and special sauces and purees. “Dining has to be both enjoyable and healthy,” said Chef Alon. “We understand the need for limited to almost NO sodium & sugar intake and use no-salt seasonings such as Mrs. Dash. We also offer a wide variety of sugar-free desserts.” Chef Alon along with our Gabriel Garrido, the Food Service Director at The Palace Suites, a luxury independent living community, believe there’s always a reason for a celebration and have cre-

ated themed dinners throughout the month to heighten residents dining experiences. “Palace residents are well traveled and have very high expectations,” said Garrido, who has been with the company for over 10 years. “Employees get their greatest satisfaction from seeing residents happy; therefore, we go above and beyond to exceed these expectations while shattering the stereotypes of dining at a senior living community.” The Renaissance and Royale residents enjoy specialty dinners twice per month. Past themes have included German, Asian and Mediterranean. Suites’ residents enjoy gourmet dinners on Thursday nights with menu items including filet mignon and shellfish. Also, the Suites’ Happy Hour is kicked up a notch regularly, featuring an international theme and small plates from the region along with complementary entertainment. Recently themed Happy Hours have included a Spanish Tapas event featuring over 20 different appetizers along with flamenco dancers and an Italian Antipasto Party with over 15 delicious offerings including proscuitto di parma with fresh tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella. Holidays and special occasions are yet another way The Palace communities make the dining experience special. The Palace Suites recently set a record when it hosted the largest Mother’s Day brunch buffet for over140 residents and their families in addition to hosting a myriad of unique brunches throughout the year including a Sunday Gospel Brunch, a Country Western Brunch, an Oktoberfest Brunch, Father’s Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Xmas Day & Hanukkah buffets, and more. Residents also have opportunities to voice their opinions about the dining experience at The Palace. In addition to talking with the Chef as he visits their table every dinner to solicit feedback, they can share their thoughts during the monthly Resident Council meeting or write their comments in the Palace biannual Resident Satisfaction Surveys. Our chefs and dining room mangers take other steps to further maximize resident dining satisfaction. White linen tablecloths adorn each table and are accented by fresh flowers. Residents also enjoy a glass of wine and freshly baked bread (baked in-house) with dinner, and the young wait staff is educated daily about the Menu, the Daily Specials

& their ingredients and how they should be served. “It’s not simply about food on a plate,” said Chef Alon. “It’s about service. The dining experience begins even before the server arrives at the table; personal service is paramount. Here, the dining staff knows residents by name and anticipate their preferences.” Chef Alon has launched an engaging, interactive cooking show too. Twice per month, he prepares dishes such as stir fry vegetables, soups and meatballs, taking residents through the food preparation process and cooking stages. Donned in aprons and hats, residents cook along, and eagerly look forward to the finished product. “The Palace chefs don’t simply make meals, they make the entire dining experience incredible,” said Shaham. “Our food services satisfaction surveys are extremely high and residents take great pride in inviting their friends and family for dinner.”

Helen Shaham and her husband Jacob have been operating Senior Living Communities for the past 30 years. The Palace Suites in Kendall is a luxury Independent Living Community for active seniors. In addition, The Palace at Kendall campus is home to two Assisted Living Residences and a Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. They also operate The Palace Gardens Assisted Living Community in Homestead, Homestead Manor Nursing Home and The Palace @ Home, a Medicare Certified Home Health Agency. Their two newest projects are The Palace at Weston – Luxury Living for Those 55 and Over, and The Palace TelAviv, a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Israel. They have two communities under development – The Palace at Weston Senior Living and The Palace at Coral Gables, Independent & Assisted Living. Incidentally, the owner of the restaurant, Maria Sotiriou, is the mother of Angela Sotiriou, a Dade Demonstration alumna. To get the word out about this event, groups have been formed on <www.thefacebook.com> and <www.classmates.com> , according to Marcia Spevak Breiter, Class of 1966. “As of right now, about 20 people have confirmed they’ll come,” she said. Dade Demonstration Elementary taught first through sixth grade. Breiter said it was a regular school, but they used different teaching techniques like teaching spelling phonetically and concept learning, rather than memorization. In 1977, the school, located at 3501 SW 28 St., right behind Douglas Park, became the English Center, an adult-education facility. The tougher the times, the greater the stress. No one knows this better — or feels it harder — than the small business owner. When times are good, they employ a majority of Americans. But when times are tough, they are the first to lay off or reduce salaries. Those who can get by are still bombarded by headlines announcing business closures, job losses, and home foreclosures. All of this bad news can be very stressful. In 2008, the American Psychological Association reported that money and the economy were two of the top sources of stress for 80 percent of Americans. If you already have been forced to close your business or lay off employees, managing stress is even more important. Let’s discuss some important techniques. First, don’t panic. Stay alert to what is happening, but don’t obsess over the latest financial statistics. Sure, this is easier said than done, especially when your bills are piling up. However, if you focus only on the fact that you are unemployed and in debt, you will not be able to cope with stress and anxiety. Next, take control of your situation. Concentrate on what you can control. If your business is struggling, you may have to make difficult decisions, including laying off employees or even closing down. To do this and survive, you will need a plan. Following that plan will require discipline, commitment and, above all else, a single-minded determination to succeed. Doing the same at home is important as well. Financial planners and credit counselors can help you make a plan to take control of your economic situation. Pay attention to how you cope with stress. Avoid unhealthy behaviors like drinking, smoking and gambling. Fight the temptation to become irritable and aggressive. This only will worsen the problem. Consider whether you are taking a difficult situation and making it a disaster. What are you telling yourself about the meaning of events (“I’m a failure. This is the worse thing that could pos-

Regina Mendoza, PsyD –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

sibly happen.” If you find yourself having these kinds of negative thoughts, take a moment to carefully evaluate your actual situation. If these thoughts continue, consider seeing a mental health professional. Learn to moderate your physical reactions to stress. Slow, deep breathing will bring your heart rate and respiration back to normal and reduce muscle tension. Exercise three to four times a week. Eat well-balanced, nutritious meals. Maintain your ideal weight. Avoid nicotine, excessive caffeine, and other stimulants. Take breaks, and get enough sleep. Finally, maintain your emotional reserves. Reconnect with friends and spend time with your family. Take the family to the park or the beach for a free day of fun. Expect some frustrations, failures and sorrows. If you find yourself overwhelmed by stress, talk to a psychologist who can help you address your stress more effectively and provide additional support.

Regina Mendoza, PsyD, is a State of Florida-licensed psychologist who specializes in the treatment of anxiety, depression, stress and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder at her Miami-based practice. She provides individual and family psychotherapy and psychoeducational evaluations to children, adolescents, and adults. Dr. Mendoza resides in the Roads neighborhood of Miami.

HARB announces its first open house in 18 years BY ROBERT HAMILTON The personnel of the 482nd Fighter Wing are busy preparing for their next major operation — hosting Homestead Air Reserve Base’s first open house and air show in 18 years. The base will open its gates to the public and host the “Wings Over Homestead Airshow” on Nov. 7-8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The base’s first open house since being rebuilt after Hurricane Andrew will feature the famous U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team performing on both days. The event also will offer performances by the F-15 Eagle demonstration team, U.S. Army Screaming Eagles Jump Team, U.S. Air Force Jet Car, U.S. Air

Force Reserve Band, and Sky Soldiers: A Tribute to Patriots. Military aircraft including a B-52 Bomber, KC-135 Stratotanker, Navy Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), F-16 Fighting Falcon, C-130 transport aircraft, and an H-60 helicopter will be on display. “Having the air show not only allows the public to come out and see two days of world class flying, it serves to thank South Florida citizens and communities for their continued support of the military and veterans,” said Brigadier General William Binger, 482nd Fighter Wing commander. Information on the event and sponsorship opportunities is available at <www.wingsoverhomestead.com>.

2009 Ford F-150 just keeps getting better Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS You can’t see the biggest improvement to the Ford F-150, but you’ll certainly know it after a few minutes behind the wheel. Ford engineers have given the popular pickup truck a new highstrength, lighter-weight chassis that allows the 2009 F-150 to deliver more horsepower, better fuel economy, more towing and payload capacity, and even more safety features. The F-150 continues with a fully boxed frame constructed with hydro-formed and high strength steel side rails. The frame delivers 10 percent more torsional rigidity for increased durability and safety. The F150 also has such standard safety features as AdvanceTrac with RSC (Roll Stability Control) and Trailer Sway Control, plus available Rearview Camera Assist and Integrated Trailer Brake Controller. For power, Ford offers a choice from

three V-8 engines mated to either a fourspeed or a new fuel-efficient six-speed automatic transmission. The engines include a 5.4-liter, three-valve Triton V-8 that has been optimized for better performance and is capable of running on E85, regular unleaded gasoline or any blend in between; a 4.6-liter, three-valve V8, and a 4.6-liter, two-valve V-8, that delivers more horsepower with the same fuel economy performance as the discontinued V-6 engine. Diesel and EcoBoost gas turbo direct injection engines are planned for F-150 in 2010 as well. The interior of the F-150 SuperCrew has more usable space for moving more people and gear thanks to a six-inch stretch that improves rear seat legroom and cargo capacity. The second-row seat flips up and out of the way, and with the flat load floor the SuperCrew has 57.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seats, and it can haul items up to 47.9 inches tall (such as a new flat-screen TV). The regular F-150’s pickup box has a cargo capacity of 65.5 cubic feet and Ford designers have made it easier to use, more flexible and accessible with such new features as Ford’s Tailgate and Box Side Steps, the Stowable Bed Extender and the

Capricorn - If you are already married there could be dramatic changes in your relationship this week. Some kind of profound and challenging change could actually work to bring your closer together. If you are still single, you could meet someone dynamic and exciting soon. Aquarius - A little fun and games could not hurt your workplace, in fact, it's just what you all need to get your creative juices flowing again. If you are a manager, consider taking your team out to a sporting or entertainment event, to show your appreciation and maybe trigger off some creative energy. Pisces - There are opportunities for travel and entertainment this week, but it is going to cost a lot of money if you are not careful. You may be able to learn something about art, music or the spiritual arts such as meditation this week. Your energy levels are likely to fluctuate through the week.

The Town of Cutler Bay is committed to its Going Green Initiatives, and is constantly striving to look for ways to do its part to be an environmentally responsible community. One way of doing so is by opting out of receiving Local Business Directories if you do not expect to use them. AT&T has informed the Town that it will begin delivery of this year's Real Yellow Pages® directories in October 2009. Cutler Bay residents wishing to “opt out” of receiving AT&T directories or change the number of AT&T directories they receive can do so by calling AT&T at the number below. Cutler Bay residents are encouraged to participate in this environmental effort by calling AT&T at 1(866)329-7118 and requesting to be removed from the Local Business Directory delivery distribution list. Residents must call by August 16, 2009 to meet the deadline for this year’s distribution. Please let the Town know if you have participated in this effort by contacting gogreen@cutlerbay-fl.gov to inform us.
