Pilots For Kids brings dose of holiday cheer
Miami-Dade County announces holiday operations schedules
BY EUGENE P. FLINN
Mayor Families celebrate the holiday season in many different ways, but one of the great things that we all have in common in Palmetto Bay is the overwhelming sense of community and responsibility to family that we share. I am reminded, especially during the holidays, of the importance of family and the importance of maintaining our sense of civic spirit. I am personally humbled and grateful for the remarkable compassion and goodwill that our residents demonstrate throughout the year. The residents of Palmetto Bay consistently come together and exhibit a warmth that you find in far too few places, whether it is by participating in civic fundraising events; donating food, clothing, toys or time to civic organizations, such as the many sports teams, Scouts, and PTAs in our area, public and private schools, and by contributing to your place of worship. I hope that all of you who have performed these wonderful acts of generosity know how truly valuable your efforts are. What you do is demonstrate to another human being that you care. This is what the holiday spirit is all about. I hope during this holiday season as we celebrate and enjoy our families that each and every one of us takes a few minutes to think about those families who cannot be together — for the soldiers who defend

Javier Carvajal and Daniel Molina, airline pilots who are residents of Palmetto Bay, as well as other pilots who live in surrounding communities spent a good part of Dec. 15 at Baptist Children’s Hospital visiting youngsters who are hospitalized there, bringing toys and answering questions about what it’s like to be a pilot. makes it all worthwhile. “We do this every year for the kids,” Molina said. “Sometimes we go to churches, too. It’s not only here; we do it all over the country. Pilots For Kids was first started by a group of Airborne pilots. Then we all joined together from the different airlines and now it’s a humongous organization and we all put money in and buy the toys and come in to the hospitals. “We enjoy it very much, letting the kids know that someone cares and it’s really nice to see the emotion on the faces of the kids and their parents —

Village encourages residents to be ‘smart, safe, responsible’ BY BILL KRESS The holiday season brings out the best in all of us‌well, most of us. According to Palmetto Bay’s Policing Unit, some people already are taking the spirit of the season to new heights with late-night parties, loud music, and at least one large gathering at an unoccupied home. Village Mayor Eugene P. Flinn encourages residents to be “smart, safe, and responsibleâ€? this holiday season. “We certainly understand this is the time of year when friends and families gather to share in the warmth of the season — and we’re not trying to put a damper on anyone’s festivities,â€? Mayor Flinn said. “But, at the same time, we need to be aware that sometimes, party-goers may step outside the norms of ‘goodwill toward man.’â€? Mayor Flinn requests that if residents witness suspicious activity, they
should not hesitate to call the police, by dialing 9-1-1. He further notes that in addition to the party at the unoccupied home, there have been reports of loitering on the streets and/or in neighboring yards, and other inappropriate activities in neighborhoods. This also is the time of year when there often is an increase in burglaries and petty crimes, especially at shopping malls, according to Commander Gregory Truitt of the Village Policing Unit. “Shopping during the holidays can present unique dangers, he said. “By taking a few preventive steps, you can keep your holiday season joyous and crime free. So that residents may be better prepared in the event of such crimes, the village recently released its annual Holiday Shopping Guide, which is available online at <www.palmettobayfl.gov>.

unincorporated Miami-Dade County and the municipalities of Aventura, Cutler Bay, Doral, Miami Gardens, Miami Lakes, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, Sunny Isles Beach and Sweetwater. Residents are advised of the following holiday garbage pick-up schedule: Residents who receive Thursday garbage collection should not place their waste at the curbside on Thursday, Dec. 25. Thursday customers should place their waste at the curbside on Monday, Dec. 29 (the next regular garbage collection day). If Monday collections are not completed, DSWM crews will continue collection on Tuesday, Dec. 30. If Friday collections are not completed, DSWM will continue collection on Monday, Dec. 29. Due to the heavy volume of waste anticipated to be placed at the curbside after the holidays, garbage service may be later in the day than many residents are accustomed to on Friday, Dec. 26, and Monday, Dec. 29, or the garbage may be collected on the following day. There will be no curbside recycling collection on Thursday, Dec. 25, for residents of communities including: Cutler Bay, Florida City, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, South Miami and Unincorporated Miami-Dade County.
County residents whose everyother-week, blue cart curbside recycling collection service falls on Thursday, Dec. 25, should place their recyclables at the curbside on Saturday, Dec. 27, as indicated on the curbside recycling calendar delivered with the blue cart. our country, for the loved ones who must share in their sacrifice, and for those who are no longer with us, although we hold their memory dear. I hope that we also will never forget and never stop striving to achieve the holiday ideal of “Peace on Earth.” Everyone can do their part to help create a better world simply by treating each other with understanding, kindness and respect. Each time you help another person, we all take another step closer toward true peace on earth. I also would like to thank the many, many volunteers and participants who help the Village of Palmetto Bay reach higher each year. The best part is that there are far too

many people to mention individually, the hundreds to date who have taken the time to serve on a village board or committee, pitch in and volunteer at community events, participate in village debate at a council or town hall meeting. On this note, I wish to mention how refreshingly democratic it is that this village engages in such impassioned debate and process. After all, it is only through conflict that resolution can be achieved. So, on behalf of the council and village staff, we wish each and every one of you, a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season, and a joyous and prosperous New Year. You all have earned it. Thank you all, again, for the kindness you show others, not just during the holidays, but all year long. Palmetto Bay is truly a wonderful community. I look forward to continuing our work in progress in 2009 with all of you.

they appreciate what we do.” Carvajal, who also was working to coordinate the event, estimated that they were seeing at least 100 hospitalized youngsters and teens that evening. “Pilots For kids is a national organization run by a Northwest Airlines pilot,” Carvajal said. “Many of us involved in the Miami area chapter are Palmetto Bay and Pinecrest residents. The organization accepts donations mainly from airline pilots throughout the year and makes visits to area hospitals during the holiday season to spread a bit of cheer to kids that are sick.” The children they saw at Baptist Hospital were there due to a variety of medical reasons, ranging from sports injuries and appendicitis to serious, lifethreatening illnesses. Without exception, the surprise visit by the pilots and the gifts brought smiles to their faces and helped them forget their problems for a while.
The parents seemed as delighted as the kids to see the visitors stop by for a muchneeded holiday break in the hospital routine. Claudia Rubio, whose son, Colyn, was one of the patients visited, thought it was remarkable. “It’s amazing,” Rubio said. “We’ve never seen pilots come out and give out presents to kids in the hospital.” Tom Mackey, a Northwest pilot soon to be with Delta because the airlines are merging, said that he has stayed with the group because of the good that it does. “I’ve been with the organization for seven or eight years,” Mackey said. “It’s a great organization. A hundred percent of the donations go to the kids. It’s all run by volunteers and there’s no paid staff anywhere. It’s time that we can give to the kids, and it makes us feel good too.” To learn more about the Pilots For Kids organization, including how to help, visit the website at <www.pilotsforkids.org/>.

Bring Santa to town by shopping locally Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR
AROUND TOWN You’ve heard it before, so now is the time to act on it: Spend your hard earned money right here in Palmetto Bay. The merchants need your business more than ever before and they have been right here in town waiting for the chance to serve you. So, before you go somewhere else, at least take a drive down South Dixie Highway and check the stores around 136th Street, 144th Street, 152nd Street and 184th and the surrounding areas and see what Palmetto Bay merchants have to offer. Look here first and if you see something you like, then consider buying it from these local people. There are lots of retail shops, small and large for just about ever taste and speaking of taste, there are dozens of restaurants, spas, and clothing stores which are great places to buy a great gift for everyone in your family. And by the way, should you not be able to find that perfect gift, then buy them a gift certificate at one of Palmetto Bay‘s locally-owned stores. There are lots of shops in Palmetto Bay that would love to call you a customer: Many thanks to the top brass over at
Splitsville. They were nice enough to host the December holiday party for the Red Sunset Merchants Association. Splitsville is a pretty amazing place, with more than 25,000 square feet of knockdown gorgeous interior, bars that you’re proud to lean on, room for dancing and oh yes, there are some bowling lanes, too. I think there are thirteen lanes in several small clusters, each of which comes with a button that says, “prepare to have FUN.” Just kidding, there really isn’t a FUN button, but you and your friends will have lots of fun on the bowling lanes just trying to figure out how to move that bowling ball down the lane and hit those pins without it going into the gutter. Especially after you’ve been eating and having a drink or two, right? And watch your friends look totally uncoordinated as, one by one, they line up at the starting line, ball in hand and send it speeding down the lane, right where it is supposed to go, until the last second, when it veers into the gutter. Now folks, I have personal experience in that department and I heard the peanut gallery behind me have a good chuckle. However, help was soon there as a waitress saw my predicament and really did push the “button” and voila, the bumpers came up and from then on, not one ball went into the gutter. Oh my oh my, even though none of us got the perfect 300 score, Splitsville and the Red Sunset
Merchants Association scored big that night. Thanks again, to Splitsville for its hospitality and for a great evening. And by the way, if you want to have a blast as did the 40 plus merchants, family and friends that were there call go to: http://www.splitsvillelanes.com. Look around and see what they have and then call 305-665-5263. You’ll be glad you did and by the way, they’ve got lots of kids stuff going on there too before 8 p.m. And these items from Kendall: Look for more bus changes to increase service on SW 120th Street in Kendall, now that the new Immigration Regional Center has opened just beyond SW 142nd Avenue, where the transit line turns north to SW 112th Street before looping back to SW 120th. Service was recently cut back to six rush hour trips, morning and night, but Cheryl Motsco who monitors transit traffic in that area will take another look to see what expansions may be necessary. Doggy Park is on the way for West Kendall folks, we’re advised by a MDC Parks Department administrator who told Community Council 11 last week that it will be the first facility to open adjoining the new District Park, planned on 164 acres south of The Hammocks. As a full dog park, it will have a space to let dogs run loose and unleashed, too. Current timing for opening: September, 2010.
If you want “a seat” in local government, be advised that the MDC Planning & Zoning Department has released the 2009 schedule meeting for non-zoning matters and reports (apart from zoning applications). In East Kendall, Community Council 12 meets January 21 at the Kendall Branch Library at 6:30 p.m.; West Kendall’sCommunity Council 11 will be in session February 11, also at 6:30 p.m., at Hammocks Regional Library. Council 11’s December 17 session was its first since last March on nonzoning affairs. Jeff Wander who served on its Municipal Advisory Committee (MAC) studying incorporation is not adverse to creating a “mega-city” in West Kendall: “I’m in favor of any size that can be proven manageable,” he says. “The major problem with incorporation is determining equitable boundaries for high revenue sources in commercial areas.” Thought of the Day When you feel how depressingly slowly you climb, it’s well to remember that Things Take Time — Piet Hein Gary Alan Ruse and Richard Yager contributed to this column. Readers react to Medicare and Medicaid fraud column R. Kenneth Bluh VIEWPOINT KENNETH’S COMMENTARY
I recently received a number of emails relating to my Medicare and Medicaid fraud column including a number of seniors reporting their experiences and how they reacted. Several readers asked why the federal government doesn’t mount a publicity campaign telling us how to report fraud. A senior wrote: “My specialist used to ask everyone on Medicare for a co-payment of $25 per office visit. The last time I visited his office I refused, saying that if he deemed the Medicare payment insufficient he should write my insurance company. So his secretary billed my carrier and received $19.70 and then proceeded to back bill them for all of my previous visits. So he received my $25 plus the insurance company’s $19.70 to cover a $25 charge — that’s fraud.”
Another senior wrote: “I got a shot for allergies in my doctor’s office. The nurse always gives me my shots. I also tell the nurse that I was out of my [prescription] nasal spray. She writes a refill Rx. A month later I get a statement from Medicare and my Medicare supplement company showing an MD visit for $140. Medicare paid $115 and my insurance carrier paid the difference. I never saw the doctor, never discussed anything, etc. Is this claim justified?” One senior wrote: “I went to see my doctor for a nagging backache. He sent me to a specialist for a one time visit that ended up in a prescription for a muscle relaxant and a statement to ‘come back if it persisted.’ Next thing you know I received a statement showing that I rented a wheelchair for three months!” None of the email stories I received were of the size reported in the Miami Herald article. Yet, when you multiply them by the millions of seniors on Medicare and Medicaid you can quickly see the dollar drain on the program. Most seniors probably feel that the

amount is small and that an error was made — for sure their doctor corrected the error when it hit his or her office. Unfortunately this is not the case. Likewise the claims are so small that Medicare administrators more than likely don’t even give it a second thought. Multi-millions of dollars could be saved if every senior reported “every” error in billing — intentionally or unintentionally billed. I suggest that Medicare and Medicaid include a “Fraud Procedure Notice” with all their reports asking seniors to examine their statements and report back to Medicare if they find an error. The Herald article suggested that 28.9 percent of medical equipment orders are fraudulent. This adds up to a very large sum of money. Here is how to report fraud or expected fraud: Email your complaint to
<HHSTips@org.hhs.gov> or call in your complaint to 1-800-447-8477. By mail, send to: The Office of the Inspector General, HHS TIPS Hotline, P.O. Box 23489, Washington, DC 20026, or by fax to 1-800-223-8164. Let’s all form a truth squad and report every discrepancy we find. Sooner or later the cheats will become discouraged and we will have saved our country billions of dollars that can be put to far better use. But it will only work if we “all” pull together. This is something we can do.

Holocaust reference inappropriate in discussing Village-Broncos issue To the Editor: I have now observed and evaluated this issue [Village-Broncos controversy] hearing and reading both views and conclude that this must end. What is happening within our community and on the front cover of our local paper is simply not fitting our great community. The reason I feel the need to comment is the reference in a recent Palmetto Bay News front cover comparing this situation to the Nazis in Germany going after the Jews and others and, now “will they come after me.” Not only is this reference totally inappropriate, it is uncalled for and affronts me personally. Anyone comparing a situation with the Holocaust should know something about it as I do. I was “there;” “They came after me.” My entire family, including my parents and grandparents, were killed and I am left the sole living Jewish survivor of my hometown and there were 6 million others including 1.5 million children. I had to survive in foster homes and orphanages in different countries and an entire continent was nearly destroyed. The Polish Jewish population, which exceeded 3 million before
the war, was reduced to almost zero. How can there be relevance to this historic human disaster to Palmetto Bay where we have honorable leaders under whose leadership we have our own town, our own parks and a mayor and council people who are reachable? I wonder what would have happened to anyone trying to reach Adolph Hitler or any of his Reichfuehrers? Yes, the Bronco issue could have been resolved in a better way but then, we should also recall that this issue became a political football during the recent election. A way should have been found for the parties to get together and find a solution acceptable to all. This is not a complex matter and should be easily resolvable when reasonable people get together. It is my understanding that the Bronco issue has been resolved, parties are working together to the best interest of our kids and it is time to put this behind all of us and instead focusing ourselves on how to resolve our financial crisis and keeping homeowners in their homes. By the end of December, the MiamiDade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) will have installed Automated Meter Reading equipment at 1,000 homes throughout Miami-Dade County. The installation of an Automated Meter Reading system is part of a pilot test project being conducted by WASD. The pilot test — a condition required by WASD’s 20-year Water Use Permit — is being conducted in order for WASD to determine how best to implement the system. As its name suggests, Automated Meter Reading, or AMR as it is more commonly known, involves the use of electronic devices that read water and other meters automatically. WASD’s system will include transmitters to convey data from individual meters to a central database housed by WASD.
AMR is either already in use or being implemented at several large cities across the country including Philadelphia, Atlanta and Denver. The system is expected to provide timely, accurate meter readings, more accurate billing and the ability to detect leaks before they result in a high bill. Additionally, AMR will help reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in Miami-Dade as WASD employees will need to drive less than they do now to read meters across the county. Another environmentally friendly benefit of AMR will be the new meter box covers WASD will be using. In order for the AMR system to transmit usage information to WASD, meter box covers will have to be made of non-metallic materials. WASD plans to use meter box covers made of 100-percent recycled materials — a blend of plastic milk containers and rubber tire grindings.

Boys and Girls Clubs receive $394K from Children’s Trust BY DESERAE E. DEL CAMPO Boys and Girls Clubs of MiamiDade has announced that the Children’s Trust has provided important funding for the club’s out-ofschool programs for the fourth consecutive year. This year’s financial contribution of $394,186 will help fund year-round after school and summer programs. The amount has been divided into two separate awards, $342,157 for the Hank Kline, Northwest, Kendall and South Beach facilities, and a separate grant in the amount of $52,029, specifically earmarked for the South Beach Club, which is located in a targeted Community Redevelopment Area (CRA). The after school programs provide children with homework assistance, computer training, educational assess-
ment, arts and crafts, cultural activities, social recreation, as well as sports recreation opportunities. The summer programs include a similar curriculum, except for the homework assistance program, but also include a talent show and unique educational field trip opportunities, which add to the learning experience obtained by the children registered for these programs. “The support of the Children’s Trust enables us to serve hundreds of children in our community,” said Alex Rodriguez-Roig, executive director of Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. “Without this support it would be impossible to provide quality programs to so many children.” For more information on the programs offered by Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, call 305-446-9910 or visit online at <www.bgcmia.org>.

Baptist Health named to magazine’s ‘Best Places to Work in Healthcare’ BY CLAUDIA VIGIL-PEREZ Baptist Health was ranked ninth out of 100 companies named to Modern Healthcare’s first-ever “Best Places to Work in Healthcare” list. This competition recognizes outstanding employers from all segments of the healthcare industry. Healthcare organizations nationwide participated in the competition, which included an extensive written survey of both the employer and employees. Companies were ranked based on policies, practices, benefits and demographics. In addition, a survey was mailed to the homes of 400 randomly selected employees to get opinions about different aspects of working at Baptist Health. Employees answered questions about leadership and planning, culture and communication, role satisfaction, working environment, relation-
ship with supervisor, training and development, pay and benefits and overall satisfaction. “Being recognized as a top employer in our industry is an honor and truly demonstrates how much we value the people who make Baptist Health a great place to work,” said Brian E. Keeley, president and CEO for Baptist Health, the region’s largest not-for-profit, faith-based healthcare organization. “At Baptist Health, we take good care of employees because it’s the right thing to do. Making sure they have a healthy work-life balance is of utmost importance, which is why we are committed to providing a culture of wellness and endless opportunities for development and advancement.” A complete list of the 2008 Modern Healthcare Best Places to Work in Healthcare can be found at <www.modernhealthcare.com/bestplacestowork>.

are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established in 2001 by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. The DAISY Foundation’s goal is to help fight diseases of the immune system. Additionally, DAISY has programs to help fund research to improve treatment and ultimately cure ITP and to provide assistance to ITP support groups. As of May, more than 2,500 nurses at 211 hospitals have been recognized with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ continues gift giveaway BY LINSEY CARSEY The popular campaign that last year delivered more than 1,200 gifts to needy and isolated local seniors is being conducted again this holiday season. Area retailers, along with agencies that serve older adults, have partnered with a local senior-care service to make sure that isolated seniors receive gifts and companionship through the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program. The area office of Home Instead Senior Care, the world’s largest provider of non-medical home care and companionship for older adults, has joined Carnival Cruise Lines, Florida Marlins, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, Miami-Dade Community Action Agency, American Elder Care, Oracle, Victus International, Girl Scouts Troop 1594, Mercy Hospital, South Miami Hospital, Baptist Hospital, Doctors Hospital, West Gables Rehabilitation Center and other assisted living facilities to provide presents to seniors who otherwise might not receive a gift this holiday season. Throughout North America, this is the fifth year of the program where last year more than 26,400 volunteers distributed

gifts to deserving seniors. In the past four years since introducing this Be a Santa to a Senior program, Home Instead Senior Care has helped provide more than 930,000 gifts to 568,055 seniors in North America. “Be a Santa to a Senior each year sets new records in contributions of gifts to a group that often is forgotten during the hectic holiday season,” said Gisela DeArmas-Ramirez, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Miami-Dade County. “While children are the beneficiaries of many holiday programs, people often don’t think about the isolated and lonely seniors who need to be remembered as well during this season. Be a Santa to a Senior also is designed to help stimulate human contact and social interaction for older adults who are unlikely to have guests during the holidays. “Be a Santa to a Senior is a fulfilling way to say thanks to those older adults who have helped build our community,” DeArmas-Ramirez said. “Our hope is that many will be touched by this holiday gesture of goodwill.” For information about the program, log on to <www.beasantatoasenior.com>.

City of Homestead recognizes farm workers from South Dade BY SHERRY SIERVELD It was a big day at the South Dade Farm Workers Center as it received recognition by the City of Homestead. Homestead Mayor Lynda Bell read the proclamation making Saturday, Nov. 8, “Farm Workers Day” as a tribute to the contributions of agricultural workers in South Dade. Later, Mayor Bell spoke about the contributions of all farm and agricultural workers, not only in the Homestead area but all across the country. “It is so important to recognize that agricultural workers, not only here in our community but in other communities across our country, do so much to bring our food to market and to our dinner table, every day,” Mayor Bell said. “We should not take for granted the contributions of these hardworking folks and their families and all that they contribute to our community.” As part of the celebration, the housing and community center hosted a party for its residents, sponsored by Humana Inc. and Kidz and Families Medical Center. They held raffles
throughout the day and gave away bicycles, a flat screen television and a sound system. Other organizations participated in the event as well. The Good News Care Center, a clinic ministry owned by the Miami Baptist Association and working collaboratively with Baptist Health South Florida to provide free healthcare, had a health fair and conducted free health screenings for children and adults. Also in attendance was the Red Cross, distributing safety literature and doing demonstrations. The Church World Service provided information and counsel for immigration status, and Sembrando Flores conducted HIV and AIDS outreach. The Homestead Housing Authority, the umbrella housing organization that runs the South Dade and Redland Centers, also was on hand to help with the festivities. Celebrity Solstice: First in its class in cruising BY MIKE BERK Cruisers looking to move up to the next level of ships and service don’t have far to travel to find “premium” cruising on the newest ship of Celebrity Cruise Lines. The company recently unveiled the Celebrity Solstice, which is sailing out of Port Everglades this winter until it heads for Europe in April. The Solstice, the largest ship in Celebrity’s fleet and the first of five ordered in its class, will be stopping at such ports in the Eastern Caribbean as San Juan, Puerto Rico; Basseterre, St. Kitts; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Tortola, British Virgin Islands, and Labadee, Haiti. The Solstice, at 1,033 feet in length and 122,000 tons, can accommodate 2,850 guests (double occupancy), and although it has many of the amenities found on similar ships, it offers some unusual features. The Solstice has a half-acre Lawn Club where you can picnic or practice putting on real grass hundreds of miles at sea. Next to the Lawn Club is a Hot Glass Show sponsored by the Corning Museum of Glass and put on several times daily. Here experts create outstanding pieces of glass art — many later placed on display throughout the ship — while they explain the art of glassblowing. Nearby are several pools, including the enclosed adults-only Solarium conveniently located adjacent to the AquaSpa. For those who want to relax with a good book, there’s a well-stocked two-story library. Dining is an important part of what makes cruising special and the Solstice offers a wide variety of options. For those who appreciate the more traditional way of dining on a cruise ship, the Grand Epernay dining room combines Old Hollywood glamour with contemporary design highlighted by a distinctive, dramatic, two-story glass wine tower. If you want a change of pace sometime during the week, try one of ship’s specialty restaurants most clustered together. The Tuscan Grille serves with an Italian flair featuring superb steaks. Reflective of the specialty restaurants on the cruise line’s Millennium-class fleet, Murano presents a blend of classic and modern Continental cuisine. The elegant restaurant designed features dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows, with romantic ocean views. Casually chic Bistro on Five serves a variety of specialty crepes, and while guests are welcome to take out selections, the ocean views are likely to entice them to stay. While there are additional charges ranging from $5 to $25 per person in some of the specialty restaurants, there are many more dining options around the ship at no additional charge. With the introduction of Celebrity’s new Solstice class of ships comes the introduction of a whole new category of accommodations — AquaClass. Celebrity’s AquaClass is designed to offer a new style of cruising, one expressly intended to provide an enriching experience at sea while affording a balance between indulgence and wellness. A total of 130 (double occupancy) contemporary veranda staterooms located on Deck 11, near the AquaSpa, comprise AquaClass. While it is impossi-

ble to list all the extras available to AquaClass guests, the staterooms come with a variety of special features and amenities as well as special access to select spa facilities. Even if you don’t book an AquaClass room, the ship offers a wide range of accommodations featuring interactive 32-inch flat screen TVs that bring many of the ship’s services right to your stateroom. Ninety percent of the ship’s staterooms have an ocean view and 85 percent have verandahs. The grand Solstice Theater and numerous lounges provide many entertainment options for at-sea moments when you are not browsing through the Shops on the Boulevard and Galleria Boutiques or trying your luck in the Fortunes Casino. Although the ship is big, it is designed throughout with intimate quiet spaces ideal for reading a
book, talking with friends or listening to your iPod. The ship is designed for the discerning cruiser, according to Dan Hanrahan, president and CEO, Azamara Cruises and Celebrity Cruises — both divisions of Miami-based Royal Caribbean International. “Our typical guest is somebody that enjoys the finer things in travel,” Hanrahan told members of the media during a November pre-inaugural cruise. He said that even with the current economic situation, “booking is very strong and we expect more interest [in the future]. Cruising is an incredible value.” For more information on the Celebrity Solstice, call your travel agent, dial 1-800437-3111 or visit online at <www.celebritycruises.com>.

For those students who like a little challenge with their game, the opportunity is now open to participate in the Junior Orange Bowl (JOB) International Chess Championship, which runs during the last weekend of December (Saturday, Dec. 27, to Monday, Dec. 29). Students who participate in the tournament, which takes place at the Embassy Suites Hotel Miami International Airport, must be high school age or younger. There is no minimum age for someone interested in participating and it’s not uncommon for a young child prodigy to end up playing in the tournament. Players may be unrated, however all entrants must have a current membership to the United States Chess Federation. This year marks the 11th anniversary of the JOB International Chess Championship. As in previous years, a turnout comprised of local, national and international students is anticipated and students from all three categories are encouraged to enter the tournament. The three-day event will consist of multiple rounds of play and include some variations to traditional chess, such as a “blitz” and “bug house” game. A “blitz” is defined as a chess game where each side has less than 15 minutes to make their move (as opposed to the traditional 1-3 hours a player is usually offered, timed by the chess
clock). A “bug house” game occurs when teams of two compete across simultaneous chessboards. Students who enter the tournament pay an entry fee of $50 per person or $160 for a group of four. The top five teams and top 10 individuals per division are awarded trophies and all participants and coaches receive commemorative medals. To register, visit the Junior Orange Bowl website at <www.jrorangebowl.com> and download the application. Interested participants also may contact Tiffany Kennedy at 305-984-9896, Maday Kennedy at 305-772-4289 or send email to <wtmkennedy@flash.net>. For more information about the Festival contact the Junior Orange Bowl Committee at 305-662-1210. You also may visit online at <www.jrorangebowl.com>.

ING returns as title sponsor of the 2009 ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon (www.ingmiamimarathon.com) for a fourth consecutive year. The race, which will be run on Sunday, Jan. 25, quickly is approaching its largest field ever of 15,000 racers. “ING’s support is essential to our ability to put on a first-class running event,” said Gaby Pozo, general manager, ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon. “Their commitment this year to the race and to the sport helped to build our ‘community running race’ into one of the most popular winter marathons and half marathons in the country.” Now in its seventh year, the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon takes runners and walkers through 26.2 miles (and 13.1 miles) of one of America’s most international and vibrant cities. In the four years since ING joined as title sponsor, the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon has experienced positive year-to-year growth. Registration for the 2008 race set new highs with 13,102 racers signing up for the marathon and half marathon. At the end of last year’s race, 10,452 racers from 47 countries and all 50 states crossed the finish line at Bayfront Park. The race has one of the largest international fields for a combined running event with more than 11 percent hailing from outside the U.S. The 2009 event has seen an increase in registrations of nearly 20 percent from this time last year and organizers
expect a sellout. “We’ve built a professionally executed race that offers runners and walkers an opportunity to run on a course that highlights the best of Miami,” Pozo said. Adding to the popularity of South Florida’s largest distance running event, the road race earned national recognition including a selection by USA Today as a “Top Winter Destination Race” and a “Top 10 Races to Run” by Runner’s World magazine. Sponsoring a premier race such as the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon has been a great platform for ING, one of the world’s leading financial services providers. “Training for a distance running event and preparing for a secure financial future share a common theme; both require discipline and a long-term commitment in order to succeed,” said Ann Glover, chief marketing officer for ING Americas. “Being part of this race is also a terrific way to demonstrate ING’s support for the South Florida community, and to let the public know we encourage them to be physically and fiscally fit.” Along with ING, the 2009 ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon has sponsorship support from (in alphabetical order): American Airlines, Comcast Sports Southeast, Cities of Miami and Miami Beach, Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, Miami-Dade County, The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald, New Balance, Publix, Ryder Truck Rental and UHealth–the University of Miami Health System.

Nissan Altima Sedan has performance, luxury, style Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Nissan engineers redesigned the Altima Sedan from the ground up for the 2007 model year and it has been a hot seller for the company ever since, setting individual sales records and becoming the company’s best-selling sedan. This latest generation of the Altima Sedan is built on Nissan’s advanced “D” platform and is available in four models — 2.5, 2.5-S, 3.5-SE, 3.5-SL — with two engine choices: the award-winning VQ-series 3.5liter V-6 (19/26 mpg) and a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder powerplant (23/31 mpg). The 2.5-S and 3.5-SE come with either a six-speed manual transmission or Nissan’s Continuously Variable Transmission, or CVT as it’s called. The 2.5 and 3.5 models come only with the CVT. Changes to the mid-size sedan for 2009 are mostly cosmetic. It continues to ride on a 109.3-inch wheelbase, with short front
and rear overhangs, and has an overall length of 189.8 inches. It’s available with 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels and 16-inch steel wheels with new covers. Altima continues with the same distinctive, sporty design with the familiar Nissan T-shaped grille accented by powerful front fenders and wedge character line, forward A-pillars and the familiar Nissan roofline. Altima-style taillights and dual exhaust finishers highlight the rear, while High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights are standard on the 3.5 SE and SL models. Three new paint colors are offered — Sonoma Sunset, Majestic Blue and Sonoran Sand. There also are some revised standard features for the base grade vehicle, including a new 16-inch wheel cover design, black grille highlights, dual power remote-controlled side mirrors and a standard trip computer and an outside temperature gauge. There’s also a new incabin microfilter for the air conditioning system, front side window demisters, a rear seat lock, dual sun visors with a driver’s side vanity mirror and speed-sensitive variable intermittent windshield wipers. The Altima Sedan is agile and maneuverable in traffic around town and very respon-

sive on the highway, handling exceptionally well at high speeds. On the inside, the layout is roomy in both the front and rear seating areas, with ample headroom and legroom. There is good storage with 15.3 cubic feet of trunk space. For 2009, the Nissan Altima offers such comfort and convenience features as Nissan Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, RearView Monitor and Nissan Navigation with XM NavTraffic real-time traffic information (subscription required and sold separately). Standard safety equipment on all models includes ABS with Electronic Brake-
force Distribution, advanced air bag system with frontal and side-impact airbags in front, full side-curtain bags, active front head restraints and a tire-pressure monitoring system. VDC electronic stability control is available on V6 models. Our test car for the week was the Nissan Altima 2.5-S with the inline four-cylinder engine mated to the CVT with a base price of $21,540.
