ONE OF MIAMI’S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

St. Louis ‘Festival for Poor’ blends fun, fellowship

F

BY LOURDES LITTLE

rom Feb. 12-14, hundreds of volunteers will band together on the St. Louis Catholic Church parish grounds, 7270 SW 120 St., to make a difference in the lives of people in need. Through the church’s Festival for the Poor, the volunteers — with hands “set to the plow” — will prepare to serve the disadvantaged in the local community. According to event organizers, the Festival for the Poor is a family weekend filled with fun events and attractions, including international food booths, children’s games and rides, a raffle, silent auction, live entertainment, an arts and crafts show and much more. In the spirit of prayer, this year’s theme is Be Still. The church welcomes all its neighbors and community members and invites them to come together and share in the fun. Organizers say, “The best part of it all is that the ‘work’ is a great deal of fun. It provides fellowship and family-building activities for all to enjoy.” Proceeds from the event will benefit a variety of nonprofit organizations in the community, including Camillus House, St. Anne’s Mission, Community Rehabilitation Center, Sunrise Community and Kristi House. Festival for the Poor hours are Friday 7 p.m.-10 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday, Noon-10 p.m. For more information, call 786-337-3666.

TIM HARDAWAY, Jr. Teaching basketball fundamentals to area youngsters is one way that Palmetto High School senior Tim Hardaway, Jr. gives back to the community. Hardaway is a volunteer assistant at the Benny Fragela Summer Basketball Camps, usually held at Palmetto High School or on one of the Gulliver campuses. The camp draws kids from elementary school to eighth grade. “We’ll help out with the drills,” Hardaway says. “We’ll be like the coaches for some of the kids’ games. We’ll eat lunch with them.” Hardaway works with all age groups. At one camp, he might work with the younger children and at the next he’ll work with the older kids. He also referees games. He enjoys his time with the kids, enough so that he’s volunteered at four or five camps and he plans to work the camp again next summer before he goes away to the University of Michigan. “I show them how I learned to play the game of basketball,” he says. “I give them the same advice that my dad would tell me. Sometimes I joke around. I have them play one on one against me. Or I have them shoot three point shooting contests against me. Just to relax and have fun.” His basketball camp experiences were away from Miami, at camps such as the Nike Hoops Jamboree or the Chris Paul

Basketball Camp. But he first learned the game from his father, Tim Hardaway, a former Miami Heat star and a member of the gold medal U.S. Men’s Basketball Team at the Sydney Olympics. Hardaway says his family moved to Miami when he was in preschool. Growing up, he didn’t feel pressure to play the game. “I treated it as a game to have fun and take up time until I got to high school,” he says. “Then I started to take it seriously.” Initially he attended high school at Palmer Trinity, but transferred to Palmetto in 10th grade. He made the Palmetto varsity as a sophomore as a shooting guard. Hardaway says the Palmetto team has potential this year, although they have had a rough start. “Our schedule this year is very tough,” he says. Next year Hardaway will be playing basketball at the University of Michigan. His major is still undecided, although he’s interested in doing something sports related, possibly sports administration or sports management. Right now, his plan is to stay in college all four years. He is interested in playing in the NBA. Along with being involved in sports, Hardaway is a member of the 5,000 Role Models club. “We try to set an example for African American males around our school let them know that we really take everything seriously,” he says. “We don’t play around in school. We do all of our homework and make sure everything is done correctly. We try to set an example for all the males in our school.” As the son of a former basketball star, he’s used to having people watch his every move. “It’s very hard (being the son of a star player), you always have to know everyone’s watching every move and if you make a mistake, in less than an hour everyone will know,” he says. Hardaway is also a member of the Health Interested Students club. Through that club, he goes into PE classes and talks to the students about health related situations. The topics range from mental health to eating disorders, AIDS to sexually transmitted diseases. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

MICHAEL SACO Autumn 2009 was a good time for Palmetto High School senior Michael Saco. As a member of the Palmetto swim team that won the state championship, Saco also set a state record in the 50-meter freestyle. The rewards from his successful senior season included numerous trophies and scholarship offers from several universities, capped with signing a letter of intent to Louisiana State University where he will swim for one of the more successful programs in the nation. At the Florida state championships, Saco had great personal success which helped lead the team to the title. “I won the 50, the 100, the 400 freestyle relay and the 200 freestyle relay,” he says. Before the state championships, Saco had a private tutoring session with Olympic swimmer Gary Hall. “He actually came to my pool a couple of weeks ago to help with my starts,” he says. “My coach got him to come down. He used to swim for Miami Swimming years ago.” Last year, the Palmetto team lost the state championship by one point, although Saco did well individually. He says it was satisfying to win this year.

“The team that beat us, Palm Harbor, we destroyed this year,” he says. “I also set the state record in the 50 freestyle.” Saco had hoped to set more records, but an injury derailed that possibility. “At states, on my first event, when I was doing the 50 freestyle, I hurt my elbow hitting the wall. That was a big injury because I had to swim the next three events with a jammed elbow,” he says. “I didn’t do the time I was expecting to do, but it was good enough to win. It was very painful.” Not only is Saco successful in Florida, he is ranked nationally and does swim in national meets in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle. He has participated in the Junior Nationals and Senior Nationals, where he swims against Olympians. “I’ve done well; I’m seeded second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle in the national meet,” he says. His dream is to go to the Olympics representing the United States. Because of his family background, he is eligible to go to the Olympics representing other countries. “I wanted to do the U.S.,” he says. “I’m on track. I think it’s one of the hardest things in the world, to make the team in the USA because they only take the top two. I’m at the point that I’m as fast as Olympians were at my age. I have a good shot and that’s my goal.” Saco has been swimming competitively since he was 10 years old. He was only seven months when he first went into a pool. Over the years, he also played baseball and soccer, but gave them up when he began to excel at swimming. In order to be a competitive swimmer, Saco is in the pool from 4:30 to 6:30 a.m. and then again in the afternoon, so it’s hard to do much more than attend school and swim. “At this level you have to focus if you want to be great,” he says. “I try my best to go to basketball and football games if I can.” Despite the rigid schedule, Saco has managed to garner more than 200 community service hours by volunteering at a swimming summer camp at Westminster Christian. After he finishes college – and, hopefully, competes in the Olympics — Saco hopes to become a physical therapist. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

TAYLOR WADDELL For years, Palmetto High School junior Taylor Waddell’s life centered on softball. She pitched and she played second base and outfield for the Palmetto varsity team

and also played on a traveling team, the Stingrays. “In my freshman year, I played swing with junior varsity and varsity,” Waddell says. But the summer after her freshman year, she injured her shoulder, which required surgery and rehabilitation. She came back at the end of her sophomore season. “I started playing; I came back strong and I made the All Miami-Dade third team,” Waddell says. “A couple of months later, I got injured again. But I’m not getting surgery again.” Waddell had tried playing softball this summer, but had to stop after a few games because she was in pain. An MRI showed she had a partially torn labrum, tendonitis, bursitis and inflammation in her rotator cuff. So she went back into therapy. The rehab has helped and her plan is to come back and play in her junior and senior years. She is on track to try out for the team right after the winter break. “I’ve learned that with determination I can do whatever I want to do. I can come back strong and play softball. I’m happy

with myself for coming back and doing well,” Waddell says. She will be playing for a new softball coach, Joey Baixauli, who took over this year. Along with making her shoulder stronger, going to rehab made her aware of physical therapy as a potential career. “That’s what I would love to study in college,” she says. “I did an internship at Pinecrest Physical Therapy over the summer. I wasn’t allowed to touch the patients, but I learned so much. It’s really fun, the people you meet. All my therapists were so cool. I looked forward to going to therapy.” When she’s not playing softball or going to rehab, Waddell tries to take part in extracurricular activities. She did the Panther Prowl, Palmetto’s big pep rally, and she is a member of the Invisible Children Club. “We recently had a fundraiser for the children in Uganda,” she says. “Our club was split up into 10 groups of seven. We had to raise more than $100 (each group) and all this money would go to schools in Uganda to help rebuild them.” Waddell’s group put together an art show

at Golden Rule Seafood on South Dixie Highway that raised more than $400. Waddell is also a member of the National Honor Society and Eight Habits of the Hearts. As a member, she goes to classes to talk about Palmetto’s core values. “The one I present is integrity,” she says. After Waddell takes her SATs in January, she’s planning a community service project, a charity event, possibly a dinner with a raffle. The dinner would have an entry fee and the money raised would be distributed to one or more charities. Initially the plan was to do the fundraiser for Invisible Children but she decided to look at other organizations because of the money they had already donated to that cause. “I like raising money for the Make A Wish Foundation,” she says. This year, Waddell is hoping to reclaim the joy of dancing, which she had to give up when she made the softball team as a freshman. “This year I’m going to try out for it. I love dancing,” she says. Don’t let the cold weather give your pond fish ‘Big Chill’ FROM ROBIN’S DESK ––––––––––––––––––––– BY ROBIN KORTH –––––––––––––––––– Miami native Dr. Jeff Murray, founder of Pond Doctors, wanted me to pass on a hint for the care of your much-prized fish pond population during the chilly days of Miami’s winter. “When the air temperature drops to 60 degrees, divert the waterfall return line to go directly underwater,” Dr. Murray says. “This will reduce the cooling effect of the air/water interface. Koi can handle cool temperatures, but tropical fish like African cichlids can’t survive long at temperatures below 65 degrees.” Dr. Murray’s medical education, training, and experiences provide a solid base for his mastery of water chemistry and knowledge of fish pathology. His experience in the surgical correction of foot and Dr. Jeff Murray ankle deformities gave

him a deep knowledge of infectious diseases — bacterial, fungal and viral – the illnesses that can kill your valuable pond fish. Protect your fish and your investment. Cobra health plan coverage may become much more expensive Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY What do snakes and government have in common? The answer: A health plan called “Cobra Coverage.” The government-subsidized plan has become a major part of the federal safety net for millions of unemployed workers. It allows laid-off workers to keep their old company health insurance, but the catch is that they have to pay for most of the bill themselves. The latest version of the standard plan allows workers who were laid off after September 2008 to enroll in up to nine months of their old health coverage at a reduced rate. Thanks to a federal subsidy, the government absorbs about 65 percent of the total cost. Former workers have to pay the other 35 percent themselves. However, once the federal subsidy expires at the end of the month, millions of unemployed workers will have to find more money to keep their health insurance or find other alternatives. Under normal circumstances, the policy does not allow re-enrollment. Once the 90-day election period expires or the COBRA coverage is cancelled, there is no way to reapply. Even so, some people are trying to avoid possible conflict by purchasing a short-term plan. Unfortunately, short-term coverage has limitations. Unlike an individual or family health insurance plan, if there is a medical condition while on a shortterm policy, the insurer has the option not to renew the coverage once the preset term of the short-term policy ends. Short-term policies also won’t cover any current pre existing health conditions or medications. On the upside, short-term coverage provides an excellent safety net in case of unexpected emergencies or hospitalization, and it’s an especially effective option when you know that you’ll have access to another health insurance plan — like group health coverage through an

employer — within six months. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you may find it slightly easier to qualify for a short-term plan than a standard individual and family plan, since short-term coverage doesn’t extend to pre-existing medical conditions. In addition, there are other alternatives to short-term coverage, month-to-month individual and family health plans. If the goal simply is to be able to cancel coverage at any time, both short-term and individual and family coverage are paid for on a month-to-month basis and typically, an individual or family plan can be canceled at any time. “It will hit thousands of local families with higher bills than they may be able to afford,” said local financial planner Matt McGrath. “This is a very big problem for South Florida families and any other recently unemployed workers around the state as a whole.” Today, a typical Cobra bill for a family of two would be about $529 a month. But take the federal aid away and it becomes more than $1,500 a month. In Florida, the full cost of Cobra family coverage equals more than the state’s monthly unemployment benefits. Congress is considering several bills to extend the federal Cobra funding. If they don’t come up with more funding before the end of the year, thousands of local families drawing unemployment benefits may not be able to afford any health insurance at all. According to Congressional Budget Office estimates, as many as 7 million people could be benefiting from the Cobra subsidy by the end of the year. Critics argue that the policy is making people more dependent on government assistance and less likely to try and find a new job or new health insurance on their own. With the health insurance debate still raging in the Senate, it is unlikely that any new bills will be rushed through congress anytime soon. Students learn about impact of technology in hospital OR

Students from Gulliver Schools’ Bio-Medical Program watch a robot-assisted procedure in an operating room at South Miami Hospital. In addition to watching the surgery, the students — all in their junior year — learned from hospital nurses and technologists about how technology is helping advance surgery and changing the career landscape in healthcare. Baptist Health, in partnership with local schools, brings high school students to its hospitals to inform them about the various healthcare careers available and the proper educational paths they should take to enter these careers. Jewish film fest opens Jan. 16 BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ The Miami Jewish Film Festival was chosen Miami’s Best Film Festival in 2009 and the 2010 lineup of films opening Saturday, Jan. 16, lives up to the accolades. The award-winning films from Israel, Argentina, France, Germany, Slovakia and the USA are comedies, documentaries and contemporary dramas that ironically weave a subtle theme – people having options and making significant life choices – whether the characters are faced with life-threatening decisions, anti-Semitism, sexual orientation or marital issues. The 13th annual festival opens at the Colony Theater with the hilarious Israeli comedy A Matter of Size, which deals with personal battles and self-acceptance. Four overweight friends live in a small Israeli town, and are fed up with diets and their dieting club. When Herzl (341 pounds), the main protagonist, loses his job and starts work as a dishwasher in a Japanese restaurant, he discovers the world of Sumo wrestling, a sport that involves “two fatsos in diapers and girly hairdos,” and finds a place where large people are honored and appreciated. This universally appealing story uses the richness of Jewish humor to reveal that self-acceptance and happiness come from within. On Sunday and Monday, the festival moves to the Cosford Cinema on the UM Campus. French film icons Gerard Depardieu (Alain) and Fanny Ardant (Gisele) star in Hello Goodbye, a romantic comedy about a Parisian couple who share a comfortable life, a beautiful home, a posh country club and a midlife crisis. Following a dream vacation to Israel where Alain explores his Jewish roots, Gisele insists they change their life and move to Tel Aviv. However, in opting for a fresh start, not everything goes according to plan. Soon they’ll find out if the word Shalom, means Hello or Goodbye. For My Father, is a gripping yet sensi-

Samuel. Determined that the festivities will be the most fantastic event of the year, Coco alienates his entire family as he plans for the gala. This comedy about a son becoming a man and a father finally growing up is the perfect end to the festival’s 13th “Bar Mitzvah” year. National and international box office stars are featured in the Miami Jewish Film Festival, and include Catherine Denueve, Eli Wallach, Patrick Swayze, Carmen Electra and Lainie Kazan. Matinee and evening screenings are held at the Regal Cinema South Beach 18, the Sunrise Cinema at Intracoastal Mall, North Miami Beach, and the Cosford Cinema in Coral Gables. The Miami Jewish Film Festival is presented by the Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education. Tickets, except for opening and closing nights, are $11 general admission; $8 seniors/students; and $7 for Film Society members. A $95 Fast Pass provides entry into all films. Film Society members receive discounts on tickets and fast passes and advance festival ordering. For Film Society Memberships, complete movie listings and to purchase tickets log on to <www.miamijewishfilmfestival.com> or call 1-888-585-3456.

Farm Share and Safelink Wireless to provide free phone service to low income families BY LEE STEPHENS

Farm Share, the organization known for bridging the gap between harvest and the hungry, has now grown into a “one-stop center” of social service. Aside from providing the basic need of food to more than 6,500 families a month at the organization’s Homestead distribution center, families can now sign up for free telephone service. Thanks to a new partnership with Safelink Wireless, Farm Share recipients can now apply to Lifeline, a U.S. government and State supported program which provides eligible low-income households with a free cell phone, mobile access to emergency services, and 68 minutes of free airtime each month for one year. “Farm Share is giving new meaning to the saying “waste not, want not”, said Yvette Rodriguez of Farm Share. “This new partnership with Safelink will help provide most of Farm Share’s recipients with a luxury that has become a common necessity.” To qualify for the program, families must receive any of the following government

assistance programs: Food Stamps, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), National School Lunch Program, Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8) and Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). They also may qualify if their household income is not more than 135 percent of the federal poverty guidelines and must provide proof of income qualifications. Participants may renew service and will be required to re-submit eligibility documentation upon the year of completion. “Whether it is a free cell phone or mobile access to emergency services, it will greatly benefit those families who turn to Farm Share as a supplemental resource,” Rodriguez said. “Now our recipients can walk away with a package of food and fresh produce, and the security of knowing that Farm Share responds to the basic needs of the community.” For more information, go to <www.FarmShare.org> or <www.safelinkwireless.com> or call 866-899-7106.

The lunch crowd is always looking for a new place to eat. Now, they have another choice. This fall, a new Subway opened in Pinecrest. The store is at 12525 South Dixie Highway. “Its brand new ownership,” says store manager Junior Ledesma. “We feel there are a lot of people who don’t realize we’re there.” Ledesma says they hope to draw in new customers with great service while also providing great food. “We have one of the newest styles of store that subway has available,” he says. “We’re confident with the people we have that we’ll be able to provide good customer service, a clean store and fresh food.” He says one of the things the new Subway store management prides itself on is making sure their employees understand the importance of quick, correct service. Management is also working on getting a bead on their peak hours. As expected, lunch is the busiest time thus far. “We find our evenings are slower,” he says. “We are confident we have it fully staffed. But even when you are fully staffed there is going to be a line.” Subways are known for fresh, made-toorder sandwiches and homemade bread. “We have healthy choices as well,” Ledesma says. “We have a large variety of items for the health-conscious individual. We have healthy choices such as apple snacks and yogurt.” Subway also has new sandwiches that will be available for a limited time. “We’re going to offer a chicken cordon bleu and a chicken marinara,” he says. “We are also going to focus on the Philly

Cheese Steak and the melt that we have. And we will still have the subs that people can get for $5.” Subway has discontinued wraps, replacing them with flatbread instead. The restaurant also offers a variety of soups, depending on the day. Potato chips and fresh baked cookies are also available. Ledesma says he and his employees welcome the opportunity to show customers that they can provide strong customer service. With two parks located near the store, the new Subway hopes to capitalize on the sporting crowd. “Maybe we will have people taking their children to games and then getting food,” he says. “We do offer discounts to all individuals who come to the store in sports uniforms; whether practice uniforms or from the games in the parks.” While many restaurants have suffered in this economy, Ledesma says Subway is holding its own because of a number of factors. “People have continued to come in, just not as frequently,” he says. “In addition to having fresh food, we are also known for value. Not only the $5 foot-long, but all of the sandwiches in general are offered at value. It’s not going to break the bank; it gives them a healthy choice.” The Subway owners are banking on advertising and discount coupons to help draw in customers. Those coupons include buy-a-sub, get-a-sub-free of equal or lesser value. The coupons are good after 5 p.m. and all day on Sunday. Details are available at the store. The Pinecrest store is also preparing a customer-rewards program that will allow returning customers to earn points towards free food. For information, call 305-234-4879.

REAL ESTATE After all your preparations and marketing efforts, what do you do when you get that first offer? Don’t jump for joy or wallow in disappointment until you’ve read all the terms. Price is just the beginning and other contingencies ultimately will affect your bottom line. In reviewing the offer, pay attention to seller concessions, which can range from asking you to pay closing costs to including an allowance for roof repairs. Buyers may also request inclusion of certain articles of personal property not physically attached to the home. This might include the refrigerator or pieces of furniture. You can decline

or accept the terms, but it’s best to establish in your listing those items included and excluded in the sale. Mortgage and appraisal contingencies indicate that the buyer will seek financing to a certain rate and terms, and that the appraisal must satisfy the lender. Make sure that all of the terms are realistic, and that there is a reasonable time limit for the buyers to secure their financing. These and other terms in the offer impact how much you net from your sale, regardless of what actual buying price is stated. It’s possible that a “full price” offer could result in thousands less than a lower offer with fewer contingencies, so consult with a representative before listing and before accepting or rejecting any offers. Mike and Lynda Morgan may be contacted at the Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate Offices at 12155 S. Dixie Hwy., 305-253-2800 or by email at <mmorgan321@aol.com>.

Columbus High School teacher goes on Earthwatch expedition BY LEE STEPHENS

Mary T. McCullagh, a history and government teacher at Christopher Columbus High School, started her class from an unusual location on Nov. 29 — the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, MD. As part of her educator fellowship, sponsored by HSBC in the Community, McCullagh used satellite and Internet technology to connect “Live from the Field” to her classroom and community. She joined Earthwatch Institute’s Climate Change and Fragmented Forests expedition as a member of a research team consisting of scientists and volunteers determined to collect data and answer the most pressing issues related to climate change. The research team was led by principal investigator Dr. Geoffrey (Jess) Parker of the Forest Ecology Lab at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC). The volunteer teachers assisted the researchers by “investigating the effects of climate change on forests and the ecosystems therein.” Volunteers took tree measure-

ments, examined leaf material, and observed the forest’s wildlife population. McCullagh returned to her classroom with so many new experiences to share with her students. “The Earthwatch Expedition was extraordinary. The Internet and Web blog allowed me to involve the students in my daily experiences with commentary, photos and video,” she said. “Along with important inquiry and research skills, they benefited from the 21st Century skills of videoconferencing, collaboration and Internet investigation. The students enjoyed the live Web video conference with permanent researcher Nancy Kahn.” Students and teachers can still follow McCullagh’s expedition adventure on the “Live from the Field” website at <www.earthwatch2.org/LFF/McCullagh/>. In addition to this fellowship experience, HSBC in the Community will provide a $250 grant to implement a community conservation project designed by McCullagh and her students to further engage them in their classroom and in their community. SMH’s CEO honored by March of Dimes BY JOSE BOZA

March of Dimes named Javier Hernandez-Lichtl, CEO of South Miami Hospital, one of seven 2009 recipients of its prestigious Building Our Community Humanitarian of the Year Award during a recent recognition luncheon at Jungle Island. Hernandez-Lichtl was honored for his personal involvement and commitment to making a difference in South Florida. The Humanitarian of the Year Award recognizes individuals who exemplify excellence in their respective fields, as well as their commitment to community activities that enhance the quality of our lives. “It’s an honor to be recognized with this select group of individuals who truly embody the spirit of a humanitarian,” Hernandez-Lichtl said. “March of Dimes makes a huge difference in families’ lives. Chevy Equinox is a compact SUV with broad appeal Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Chevrolet’s re-designed 2010 Equinox SUV competes as a compact, but it has the roominess and many of the features of a midsize vehicle, which should give it an appeal to consumers of just about any lifestyle. The second-generation Equinox draws its exterior design cues from the Malibu sedan and Traverse crossover models, and is available in three trim levels — LS, LT and LTZ. It has the signature Chevy face — a two-tier grille and prominent gold bowtie insignia — with strong fender shapes, a distinctive roofline, wraparound headlights, dual round taillights, a multi-dimensional hood, wraparound rear side glass and a wheels-at-thecorners stance. The base of the windshield has been moved forward three inches for a sleeker profile and improved aerodynamic performance, while the rocker panels are integrated into the doors to make it easier to get in and out. Under the hood there’s a new 2.4-liter, 182

hp direct-injection I-4 engine that delivers 32 mpg on the highway (22 mpg city), a 33-percent improvement over its predecessor (AWD models get 20/29 mpg). There’s an available 3.0-liter 264 hp V-6, also with the fuel-saving direct injection and variable valve timing technology (25/17 mpg). Inside, the Equinox cabin is quiet thanks to noise-absorbing elements built into the chassis, engine compartment and interior. GM’s first application of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology is used on 2.4 literequipped models. ANC uses microphones to detect loud sounds inside the vehicle and sends counteracting sound waves through the audio system’s speakers to ensure a quiet ride at almost all speeds. The interior has numerous storage bins, including an oversized glove box; a closed storage bin in the instrument panel above the center stack, and more closed storage space under the center armrest that’s large enough for a laptop. A “floating” center stack houses many ergonomic comfort and convenience controls. Ice-blue ambient lighting within and surrounding the center stack, encircling the center-console cupholders and within the door pull cups accentuates the cabin. The front and rear seats, which include cloth and perforated leather-trim, are designed for comfort.

• EDUCATIONAL AND TEEN ADVICE • Toby Rose ASK TOBY What is the best way to judge a college and how do I know if their brochures are telling the truth? I don’t trust beautiful brochures and exquisite websites. The best way to find out about the college is to talk to people who have gone there and, most importantly, visit the campus. Speak to the students that are there. If possible, arrange to spend a weekend and stay for a night in the dorm with some of the students. This can be an eye opener. Many of my students, who were absolutely determined to go to their dream schools, spent the weekend and went to a few classes. After this experience, their dream school was totally off their list. You need to be realistic and realize that despite all of the hype that goes on about getting into college, it really is a serious business. You’re not going away to party and have fun, you are going away to study and prepare for your future. Remember, the people in admissions are selling a product; they’re advertising their college to you and everyone else. Think about it; just the fees for admission are about $5,200 per college. That’s a lot of money. I really want to go to a certain school and I have an upcoming interview, so what is the best way for me to show how much I want to attend this particular school? I always like the word “passionate”, passionate about your school and, hopefully, your upcoming school. Ask as many thoughtful questions as you can and be totally familiar with their website. Do an interactive tour, read all the brochures and talk to students and parents who have attended this particular university. And smile. Let your face light up to the interviewer whenever you are talking about your passion. Don’t be afraid to show how much you really want to get in. Your energy and spirit will show through. And that’s what counts. My parents want me to apply to a minimum of 20 schools. What is your opinion? I have never asked any of my students to apply to more than seven — in some cases 10 — schools. Applying to college

takes a lot of time and energy. At the same time, you may be doing all of your community service or taking the SAT/SAT II Subject Tests. Last, don’t forget you still have school. You still need to keep your grades up during your senior year. I really think that seven schools should do it. Ideally, you should have one or two safeties and one or two dream schools or reaches, as I call them, and some maybes.

What does the term “wait list” mean? A wait list is a group of “in betweeners” who haven’t been denied, but also haven’t been admitted to a particular school. They will be offered admission if the number of enrollment doesn’t meet expectation for the incoming freshmen class. What this basically means is that they really like you, but might not have enough room. My daughter is pregnant and she refuses to talk to me. I really need help. What have been your experiences in this area? This is an extremely personal question and I would be glad to answer personally at no charge. Please email me at <tobyrose19@yahoo.com> or call me at 305-238-7737. I am a junior and have taken Algebra 1 and 2, and Geometry. Since I did not take Calculus, will my PSAT score be affected? And why is the PSAT in 11th grade so important? Absolutely not. The math in the PSAT is Algebra 1, 2 and Geometry. The 11th grade PSAT is extremely important for the kids who want to be Merit Semi-Finalists or Merit Scholars and every state is different in calculating who wins. In Florida, it’s the top half of the 99th percentile starting with the PSAT in 11th grade. Last year, the index was 214 in Florida. In New York, California and Massachusetts, it was 230; Florida ranks 50th in education. We’re not doing very well, but I would not worry about the PSAT. Worry about the SAT at the end of your junior year. Toby Rose is president of Toby Rose’s College Prep. Baptist Health South Florida sponsored and built two Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami houses that recently were dedicated at a ceremony in South Miami. Baptist Health South Florida worked with the City of South Miami regarding donation of land in the area and in return Baptist Health would sponsor two Habitat for Humanity homes. Both the City of South Miami and Baptist Health worked closely during the process of providing two families new homes of their own. The new homeowners invested hundreds

of “sweat equity” hours in the construction of the homes along with several hundred Baptist Health employees who helped build the houses. “We want to thank the City of South Miami and Mayor Horace Feliu for rising to the challenge of donating land for this worthwhile project,” said Phillis Oeters, vice president of Government and Community Relations for Baptist Health South Florida. “We have been working with Habitat for Humanity for years and it is a true honor to be involved in the process of providing home ownership opportunities to families throughout Miami.”

Overweight children can carry a lot more than extra pounds into adulthood BY MARLON BAILEY, AFTA The problem of overweight children in the United States has grown considerably in recent years. A child is actually considered to be obese if they are more than 30 percent over their ideal weight. This means that if your child should weigh 40 pounds and they weigh 52 pounds, they are medically “obese.” What you might see as “baby fat” or just a “growing stage,” can actually be the beginning of life-long difficulties for your child. Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise. Child and adolescent obesity is also associated with increased risk of emotional problems. Teens with weight problems tend to have much lower self-esteem and be less popular with their peers. Depression, anxiety, and obsessive compulsive disorder can also occur. A few extra pounds do not suggest obesity. However, they may indicate a tendency to gain weight easily and a need for changes in diet and/or exercise. Obesity most commonly begins in childhood between the ages of 5 and 6, and during

Actual Patient

adolescence. Studies have shown that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obese adult. In the absence of a physical disorder, the only way to lose weight is to reduce the number of calories being eaten and/or to increase the child's or adolescent's level of physical activity. Since obesity often affects more than one family member, making healthy eating and regular exercise a family activity can improve the chances of successful weight control for the child or adolescent. There are very few facilities that offer kids and family programs. Please visit our website to see our programs and prices. Lasting weight loss can only occur when there is self-motivation. That is what we are for! At Precision Personal Training, we will show you that losing weight is a real possibility—that you can do it! For many dogs, a thunderstorm is terrifying, even if those dogs are safe and dry indoors. Your dog becomes anxious, clingy and agitated when her high sensitivity to barometric pressure warns her of a coming storm. When the storm hits, she paces, drools, barks at cracks of thunder, hides under things or cowers and shakes. After the storm, she may have trouble settling down; some dogs can be restless for hours, even days afterward. Thunderstorm rumbles can make dogs panic and engage in behaviors ranging from excessive panting to eating through drywall. Desensitization training can calm some of these dogs – but such training takes a while to work. For storm-phobic pooches who need a quicker relief, the following measures can help: See if a dog will eat high-value foods during storms. High-value foods are treats your dog likes so much she will do just about anything to score one. For some dogs it’s a tasty piece of chicken, for others a warm hot dog bite will do the trick. Local dog behavior expert Dee Hoult suggests complimentary therapies such as sprays or diffusers that contain dogappeasing pheromones – similar to the pheromones released by nursing mother dogs. “Having a pheromone plug in, or spraying pheromone on a bandana on putting that bandana on your dog often helps,” says Hoult. “It’s never a bad idea to try spraying your dogs bed with calming pheromones, or even ordering a pheromone diffusing collar that your dog can wear on a daily basis so that when a storm hits your dog is already equipped.” Some common pheromones are Comfort Zone and D.A.P. Hoult also suggests rubbing a dryer sheet on your dogs fur prior to a storm. “Yes, it’s weird, but sometimes it works! Many dogs are irritated by the static building in their fur.” Another over the county complimentary therapy is Rescue Remedy (rescueremedy.com), which can be mixed

Paws4You into your dog’s water. If using high value food and complimentary therapies isn’t enough, there is still hope for the storm-phobic canine. The Anxiety Wrap or the Storm Defender cape are two products that may reduce thunderstorm anxiety in some dogs, but experts suggest acclimating your dog to such products before a storm starts. Log on to <anxietywrap.com> or <stormdefender.com> to learn more. Some dogs are so afraid of thunderstorms that hey need pharmaceutical help to get through them. If your dog is one, your veterinarian may prescribe anti-anxiety medication. “Most vets carry alternative herbal medicines that can lower anxiety,” says Dr. Robert Pane of South Kendall Animal Clinic. But when, as dog owners, do we know when we need to seek medical help for our dog’s behavior? Dr. Pane recommends that you seek help from your veterinarian when a dog is causing physical damage to itself or your property. “We frequently recommend multimodal treatments, meaning that we prescribe a medication to help ease a dog’s anxiety so that it responds better to desensitization programs.” It’s always better to do more than one thing to discourage anxiety, as simply medicating an animal usually doesn’t solve the root of the problem. From calming music for dogs (check out throughadogsear.com) to placing your dog in a dark and quiet room away from windows, there’s a lot we can do to help our dogs through storm anxiety. Visit Paws4You Rescue every Sunday at the PetSmart across from The Falls from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. or at the South Miami Petco on the second and fourth Saturday of the month from 12-4 p.m. At these adoption events, there are volunteers on hand to answer any questions you may have about our adoptable dogs.

Carol Caridad is president of Paws4You Rescue. She may be contacted by calling 786242-7377, by addressing email to <carol@Paws4You.org> or by visiting <www.paws4you.org>.

Selling old jewelry, coins now easier for village residents

Jordan Athos at his new store in Pinecrest, Miami Mint. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

Jordan Athos has opened Miami Mint, a new coin and bullion shop in Pinecrest. The new shop is located at 8275 SW 124 St. “The community is responding well,” he says. Athos says this is a good time to visit a coin and bullion store. “People that are down and out a little bit, they can invest in gold and protect their money,” he says. “Now is a great time to be buying, trading and selling because the economy is not doing well; you have to capitalize on what’s happening right now.” Right now gold is at record highs. Athos says silver is a little bit below record levels, but is heading back up. “Gold over the past five or six years has doubled,” he says. “Nothing at this time has done what gold has done. It’s a good time if you want to sell what you have, if you want to cash it in with me, or you want to get into it and cash it in in the future. Athos has been in the gold and bullion business for eight years. “It was my first opportunity to open my own store in an excellent location,” he says. Someone who has gold they want to turn into cash, coins they want to buy or sell or bullion can take the gold to him. “I will test it and I will buy it off of them if they want,” he says. “What I recommend is have a quote from somewhere else. I will beat the quote. I don’t want anyone to walk in blindly. I want people to be educated.” He’s concerned that some people will be taken in by the TV ads for online companies that are buying old jewelry for cash but send

consumers envelopes and give quotes after the gold is mailed to them. “You should not send your jewelry anywhere on good faith to receive a check in two weeks,” he says. “I can guarantee to anybody I will pay more than any online place. People should be aware.” More importantly, when a customer comes in with gold or jewelry to sell, he weighs the items in front of them. “There are no smoking mirrors. I don’t send you a check in a week,” he says. “I do honor other people’s quotes and 95 percent of the time, I’ll beat them. If it’s a small amount, I’ll give them cash. That jewelry people are turning in for cash is not being resold, instead it is being melted down. “It has to be a special, special piece to be worth more,” he says. Athos deals in gold and silver coins, as well as rare coins. He says today, some of the more sought after coins are the American Eagle, the South African Krugerand and the Canadian Maple Leaf. As far as the Fifty State collection of quarters, Athos says that’s something you have to hand down to your children and eventually it will be worth something. “I would suggest, when you deal with the state quarters, you leave them how they are. Never clean a coin and never alter a coin,” he says. For those who are interested in selling gold or coins, Athos says his shop is open to all. He will also look over coin collections and help people understand what they have of value, even if they don’t want to sell it. For information, call 305-255-4240.

Tablet splitting can save money BY SONIA MARTINEZ, RPH Tablet splitting has been a popular, costsaving practice because the prices of some drugs are similar for various tablet strengths. Some HMOs and insurance companies are utilizing tablet splitting as a costsaving strategy. However, tablet splitting can be problematic as splitting may affect the stability of a medication, or result in overdosing or under-dosing. Because of the variability in dose that may occur with tablet splitting, this practice should be avoided when accuracy of the dose is crucial. This is particularly a concern if the tablet is a controlled- or modified-release product, or if it is enteric-coated, sublingual (placed under the tongue), or buccal (absorbed through the cheek). Splitting should NOT be considered if the tablet is not scored or if it contains more than one active ingredient. Medications that are known to be teratogenic (cause birth defects) or carcinogenic should not be split. Our compounding pharmacy can customize medications in the precise dose needed by each patient. What is a compounding pharmacy? Compounded medicines are a vital part of quality medical care. A growing number of people have unique health needs that

off-the-shelf prescription medicines cannot meet. For them, customized, compounded medications prescribed or ordered by licensed physicians or veterinarians and mixed safely by trained, licensed compounding pharmacists are the only way to better health. WEEKLY HOROSCOPES Aries - You could get some unexpected

Libra - Spiritual barriers are dropping this

good news about a promotion or new job opportunity this week. You seem to have a light about you that is attractive to authority figures. Make use of that charisma to get what you want. Don't be afraid to speak up for yourself.

week, and you have the ability to reach profound and deep psychic or spiritual levels. You may have time to explore prayer or meditation, or take in a class through a spiritual or religious organization.

Taurus - You will feel dreamy and idealistic this week and you have the best chance of making solid and lasting changes if you work together cooperatively with others. You are a leader by nature, not a follower, but you are going to learn something of the fine art of negotiation this week.

Gemini - You might find that electrical appliances short out unexpectedly then suddenly and mysteriously seem to fix themselves. You could have strange dreams and unexpected psychic experiences this week as well. Just keep an open mind and you'll learn some amazing things.

Cancer - You will greatly benefit from the company of new companions, even if their strange belief systems leave you a little skeptical. Keep an open mind, explore something new and untested. It may turn out that they are not as odd as they seem to be at first.

Leo - You will be solidifying financial and career gains this week when it dawns on you that you had better make some time for your neglected love life. You will find luck in matters of money, but may have to work at love. There may be travel delays getting from your workplace to your love nest. Virgo - Turn the radio on, and tune it to a talk radio station this week. Your chart speaks of "learning during travel", and since most of you won't be vacationing, the best way to make the most of the week's energy is to keep your eyes and ears open while you are commuting.

Scorpio - Expect a phone call or letter from an old flame this week. If you are already in a new relationship, you could be thinking about taking things to the next level, and it could be that call that gets your current partner thinking about "settling down". Sagittarius - Expect good news from your office or in a health-related matter. You could soon be looking at a raise, bonus, or the installation of a health-benefit package through your workplace. The weekend chores go smoothly this week and you could be investigating a new investment class.

Capricorn - You have an opportunity to make money out of your home on some kind of craft, hobby or creative business. Your ideas to redecorate your home may be costly, but there could be long-term financial benefit in having a more attractive home.

Aquarius - The high energy continues. You'll have many opportunities to learn new things, go new places and open up your world. Even the "old stick in the mud" everyone has one in the family tree - will come around to your way of thinking. You may have to patiently push one or two to get them going but it will be worth it. Pisces - You are going to be on the telephone a lot this week. Your loved ones and relatives may have shocking news, but the changes that are coming you and your family will welcome with great excitement. You will be passionate, creative and highly verbal this week.
