he time is drawing near and the plans are moving into high gear. Many volunteers have been working together for several years and some of them are new to the game, but all are pushing to make this the best event yet. The Community Garden Charitable Fund’s fourth annual Soiree in the Garden is set for Feb. 26 and every aspect of the yearly fundraiser is being carefully planned and executed. Committees have been formed, sponsors are lining up, the menu has been finalized, Grammy Award-winning artist Nester Torres is scheduled to perform, and the setting will once again be in the meadow at beautiful Pinecrest Gardens. It takes an organized and dedicated team to put on an event such as the Soiree, and from promotion to clean-up many committees are needed to ensure that a flawless evening is the result of their efforts. This is a team that is moving forward with the precision of a military operation. The Garden Fund has been in existence for only three years, but in that time they have gathered a troupe of active community leaders whose common goal is the enhancement of horticulture at Pinecrest Gardens. They appreciate the rare and unique nature of the place that is at the heart of Pinecrest; a diverse piece of property with a vast array of terrains housing natural environs that don’t exist together anywhere else on earth, from the Cypress slough to the rare hardwood hammocks to the waterways to the meandering pathways through vast tunnels of tropical greenery. This group has worked tirelessly to raise funds to ensure its continued enhancement, and thus far they have made significant progress. They have received enthusiastic support from Village citizens, as well as from the Mayor and Village Councilmembers, and several projects have been completed in the Garden with funds that the group has raised. Thanks to their efforts, there are now hun-

ne of the annual rites of spring in Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay is the Blue and White game at Coral Reef Park, an intra-squad baseball game for the Palmetto High School varsity and junior varsity teams. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6, starting at 10 a.m. It is a celebration of baseball complete with a barbeque, music and cheerleaders. “It’s the first game of the year when we introduce players on the varsity and junior varsity team,” says Coach Mike Klekotka. “It’s basically a coming-out party for Palmetto baseball and the varsity.” It’s also a day of fun and games for the players and their families.

ALEXANDRA LEVITT Ransom Everglades senior Alexandra Levitt averages 100-150 hours in community service in the summer and another 5060 hours during the school year. Her summer hours usually come while traveling to different countries. “The summer after my ninth grade year, I went to China with my family,” she says. “When we were in China, we taught English to a kindergarten class for a couple of weeks.” Levitt says they worked with a group called Cross Cultural Solutions, which has programs throughout the world. The Levitts chose to volunteer with the kindergarten class. She says the children caught on quickly and applied what they were taught almost immediately. “We did songs in English; they were really smart,” she says. “I was impressed with their ability to retain the information we gave them.” She found the experience gratifying, even though it was hard to communicate with the kids, but she says there was an emotional connection that helped them understand each other. Establishing an emotional connection with someone else when neither party can speak the same language was the topic of her college application essays. In the essays she wrote about the summer she lived with a Vietnamese family for a week. “They only spoke Vietnamese and I
spoke very little Vietnamese,” she says. The language barrier made it hard to communicate and bond with the family’s teenage daughter. Then they found common ground. “I play volleyball, and she played, we went out and played volleyball and that is how we were able to connect,” Levitt says. During that Viet Nam trip, Levitt and the other teens participated in volunteer work. “We actually traveled from North Vietnam to southern Vietnam over the course of six weeks,” she says. “And in each city we went to — we went to eight or nine different cities — we did different community service projects. My favorite was Operation Smile in Hanoi.” At that time, they prepped children for surgeries and they were able to watch the surgeries. “We got to take the kids back to their families and watch the reaction,” she says. Another summer, Levitt traveled to Northern India. “In India we traveled a lot through the northern cities and the Himalayas,” she says. “Our community service project was to build a classroom for an elementary school. There were 10 of us and three or four guys who were carpenters.” It was a hands-on experience that included mixing the cement and working with wire. “My favorite part is always working with the kids. I brought a bunch of soccer balls and we played soccer with them,” she says. “We played volleyball with the soccer balls, so it was a lot of fun.” Volleyball is an important sport for Levitt. She’s been on the Ransom varsity squad since her freshman year and she was captain this season. “We did really well,” she says. “We won districts for the fourth year in a row and lost in the regional semi-finals.” She also played varsity basketball for three years, but decided not to try out this year. Levitt is vice president of the Children’s Bereavement Center club at Ransom. She’s involved in the program because a friend’s mom is one of the founders of the bereavement center. Her college plans are to attend Emery University. She’s undecided as to her major, although she does want to study at Emery’s business school. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld
CAITLIN PANTER Caitlin Panter, a senior at Palmetto High School, has logged almost 700 hours in community service. Her community service included an unpaid photography internship at the Highlander Newspaper in North Carolina over the summer “I really want to be a photojournalist,” Panter says. “I worked every day until the very end of the summer.” For the internship, she covered many charitable events such as cancer fundraisers. “There were things for the local no-kill clinic for the Humane Society,” she says. “And Relay for Life, I was trying to advertise it. I wrote stories about it. I had thousands of pictures by the end of the summer.” From her photography classes at Palmetto, Panter is used to taking black and white pictures but she decided to do digital photography for the internship. “I like the old fashioned photography with black and white and a 35 millimeter. I love working in the dark room,” she says. “Photography is my passion. I’m hoping one day that I can work for National Geographic.” This year she’s taking both Advanced Placement photography and Advanced Placement art at Palmetto. She is in all honors and AP classes. Along with the summer-long internship,
Panter has earned service hours teaching dance classes at Jill Mallory Dance Studios where she’s an assistant teacher. “Currently, I’m teaching a kid’s hip hop class. I do have jazz, tap, point, ballet, modern, hip hop. Anything,” she says. “I’ve been doing it since I was probably in the first grade.” She took part in Santa’s Parade of the Elves at Sunset Place. “I dance in the parade every year,” she says. She plans to pursue dance as a hobby as long as she can. Her extracurricular activities at Palmetto also keep her busy. Panter is secretary of the Photography Club and treasurer of the National Art Honor Society. She recently completed a 24-foot mural at school of two panthers, one with its mouth open and the other listing the core values of the school. She’s also in the Social Science Honor Competitors Club as a competitor in Model United Nations. “We recently had a competition at the University of Miami,” she says. “I ended up getting an award for outstanding delegate.” At that competition Panter was representing the Netherlands and the topic was the World Health Organization. That day, the students had to handle a mock crisis, a viral infection being spread through water. The students had to try to come up with solutions and convince the other participants to come onboard and pass resolutions to solve the problem. “I helped out with the crisis,” she says. “Mainly I wrote up a huge resolution to get passed for one of the regular topics.” In November, Panter was surprised when she was given the District Nine Award. The new award was given to two students per district, one for academics and one for citizenship. Panter received it for academics. “It was just sprung upon me. Mr. Weiner told me to show up at the ceremony,” she says. “It was held at the school. It was all high schools, elementary schools and middle schools in the district.” Panter’s academic ability is the reason she has already been accepted to the University of Central Florida. She also applied to Florida and Florida State. She plans to major in photojournalism. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

ELIANA AKLEPI Palmetto High School junior Eliana Aklepi wants to make the world a kinder place. Her latest project is called “Operation: You’ve Got Mail” which dis-
tributes messages or “missions” to strangers encouraging them to perform specific acts of kindness, such as compliment a stranger, smile at the strangers you make eye contact with instead of looking away awkwardly, and if you see someone running toward the elevator you are in make a real effort to hold it open for them. The “missions” are to be placed inside an envelope labeled “Confidential” and are then placed in random, public places like bus seats, coffee shops, supermarkets and movie theaters. The envelopes were being placed and found in schools all over the country, but participants are reminded that it is a federal offense to place an envelope in a mail box. Aklepi was able to reach over 12,000 participants through her skills in social networking, especially through the use of Facebook. The Facebook page can be accessed through <www.tinyurl.com/operationyouvegotmail>. “I really didn’t expect this project to have more than 100 participants and with-
in a week-and-a-half there are 12,000” Aklepi says. “What it’s really about is the difference between talking and doing. To get people to proactively go out and make the world a better place in the simplest way. One smile really can make all the difference.” Aklepi has appeared on CBS and NBC’s South Florida Today and has more interviews lined up. “People keep telling me that I’m famous, but that’s not important, I just want to make people happy!” she says. This is the first project that Aklepi has created herself but it won’t be the last. She hopes to team up with a new nonprofit organization and be in charge of designing more nationwide projects with corporate funding and a team of whoever she chooses. “Being kind is definitely my thing,” she says. Aklepi has been involved in countless charitable projects. Her favorite experience was time spent at Camp Jenny. She says
that Camp Jenny is a five-day camp for underprivileged kids in Georgia that is paid for and run by the North American Federation for Temple Youth. “It costs $400 to send a child to Camp Jenny and we put all that we’ve got into it,” she says. “When the kids are leaving at the end of the camp and they ask if you can go back home with them, and they tell you that Camp Jenny was the most fun they have ever had, you really see that you have made a difference. You have given a child so much joy and they will love you forever because of it. You can’t help but cry with them as they get on the buses to leave.” Aklepi isn’t sure where she wants to go to college. “I want to learn everything” she says. She hopes to pursue a career in entertainment law and music management. She also wants to continue to help people in any way she can for the rest of her life. “Kindness is my constant,” she says. “All the kids get an opportunity to showcase themselves and show their friends and family that they are part of a team,” says Staci Sanford, the Blue and White Game chairperson. The Miami Heat’s Mike Baiamonte will announce the game. “He’s been doing it for years and he’s a great friend of Palmetto baseball,” Sanford says. Palmetto student Erin Pettit will sing the national anthem. “She’s done that for a number of years for us,” Sanford says. “We sell a lot of Panther apparel. All the tee shirts, sweat shirts and hats get everyone excited about the season.” Coach K sees potential in the 2010 team. “Pitching is going to be a strong point,” he says. “With the hitting coming around, we should be okay. We should be able to defend the district championship and go deep into the playoffs.” After going to states in ’06, Palmetto has been either been district champs or the district runner up. Last year the team was 17-6. Coach K says he sees this team being much like the ’06 team – scrappy and working hard for hits, but a winner. “We have a bunch of players returning, including seven seniors,” he says. Returning pitchers include Jon Keebler,
who was five and three last year, and senior Adam Sergeant, who is returning to the lineup after an injury last year. Other returning players include Mike Cetta, Max Halasz, Jacob Marcus, Dustin Delgado, David Lee and Brian Roache, who hit 23 RBIs last year. “We’re looking for sophomores to step in and pick up some of the slack,” Klekotka says. Promising underclassmen include junior Yale Sanford, Todd Smith, pitching coach Danny Smith’s nephew, Brandon Kacer and freshman Riley Delgado, the fourth and final Delgado brother to play Palmetto baseball for Coach K. Also returning are Jeff Steiner as hitting coach and Smith as pitching coach. The team will play the usual 22-game schedule – the only change being that they will not play Homestead High due to district realignments. “We no longer have 12 district games, only 10,” Klekotka says. “The JV is limited to 10 games — Five dates, five doubleheaders.” The Blue and White Game is free and open to the public. However, there is a charge of $5 for adults and $3 for kids for food. The food was donated by Publix and Tony Santana. For more information, go to <www.palmettopanthersbaseball.com>.

dreds of orchids residing in the tree canopy, a renovated and replanted colonnade area adjacent to the Garden’s meadow, Royal Poinciana trees growing near the Community Center, and the recently completed hidden garden that is now open to the public. In it a beautiful new pathway and landscaping northeast of the main entrance leads into the Garden’s rare hardwood hammock section and opens onto a quiet seating area amidst very old structures designed by nature hundreds of years ago. This project was a labor of love for the members of the Garden Fund’s board of directors, and with the help of the Garden’s horticulturist, the support of the Village government, and the approval of Miami’s Historical Review Board, this large undertaking has yielded an exceptional result. This latest addition to the
Garden has received extremely positive feedback across the board. Now that there are only weeks remaining before the big night, the word is getting out that the time to purchase tickets has arrived. The Soiree is a greatly anticipated and rare nighttime event at Pinecrest Gardens, and seating is limited. For the purchase price of $125, guests will be treated to an open bar, silent auction, dinner catered by We’re Having a Party, an extensive dessert bar, and a private concert by Nester Torres and his band. Tables of 10 are available and organizers say that they will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis. All proceeds will go toward further projects in Pinecrest Gardens. The Singing Miamians (Photo courtesy of The Singing Miamians) ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
The Singing Miamians again this year will deliver singing Valentines in MiamiDade and the Upper Keys. Dressed in tuxedos and armed with fresh-cut red roses, Singing Miamians quartets will once again fan out over Miami-Dade and the Upper Keys delivering “The Sounds of Love” to unsuspecting sweethearts at a predetermined time and place. More potent than Cupid’s arrows and creating a memory much more enduring than roses or candy alone, these gentlemen of
song often evoke tears of joy. Here’s a golden opportunity to create a romantic moment that will be preserved with a photo and sure to echo with sweet recollection throughout the year and beyond. Proceeds collected by this non-profit organization will be used primarily to fund youth harmony workshops for area teenagers. Orders may be placed by calling 305274-7464 or by internet at <www.singingvalentines.com> or <www.miamians.org>.

Protect yourself when shopping online BY KATHERINE FERNÁNDEZ RUNDLE
Miami-Dade State Attorney
305-595-2127 e-mail: koski@koski-insurance.com • http://www.koski-insurance.com 9875 Sunset Drive • Miami, Florida 33173 The National Flood Insurance Program is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Online shopping has become a popular way to purchase items without the hassles of traffic and crowds. However, the Internet has unique risks, so it is important to take steps to protect yourself when shopping online. Why do online shoppers have to take special precautions? The Internet is convenient for attackers to find ways to access your personal and financial information. Attackers who are able to obtain this information may use it for their own financial gain, either by making purchases themselves or by selling the information to someone else. Three common ways that attackers target online shoppers are: *Targeting vulnerable computers — Take steps to protect your computer from viruses so that an attacker is unable to gain access to your computer and all of the information on it. It is also important for vendors to protect their computers to prevent attackers from accessing customer databases. • Creating fraudulent sites and email messages — Unlike traditional shopping where you know that a store is actually the store it claims to be, attackers can create malicious web sites that mimic legitimate ones or create email messages that appear to have been sent from a legitimate source. Charities may also be misrepresented in this way, especially after natural disasters or during holiday seasons. Attackers create these malicious sites and email messages to try to convince you to supply personal and financial information. • Intercepting insecure transactions — If a vendor does not use encryption, an attacker may be able to intercept your information as it is being transmitted. Protecting yourself: • Use and maintain anti-virus software, a firewall, and anti-spyware software — Make sure to keep your virus definitions up to date. Use a legitimate anti-spyware program to scan your computer and remove any of these files. • Keep software, particularly your web
browser, up to date – Install software patches. Many operating systems offer automatic updates. • Evaluate your software’s settings — The default settings of most software enable all available functionality. It is especially important to check the settings for software that connects to the Internet (browsers, email clients, etc.). • Do business with reputable vendors — Make sure that you are interacting with a reputable, established vendor. Verify their legitimacy before supplying your personal or financial information. Locate and note phone numbers and physical addresses of vendors in case there is a problem with your transaction or your bill. • Take advantage of security features — Passwords and other security features add layers of protection if used appropriately. • Be wary of emails requesting information — Legitimate businesses will not solicit information through email requesting that you confirm your purchase or account information. • Check privacy policies - Make sure you understand how your information will be stored and used before providing personal or financial information. • Make sure your information is being encrypted — Look for indications that your information will be encrypted (SSL, a URL that begins with “https:” instead of “http:” and a lock icon in the bottom right corner of the window). • Use a credit card — Unlike debit cards, credit cards may have a limit on the monetary amount you will be responsible for paying if your information is stolen and used by someone else. Try to minimize damage by using a single credit card with a low credit line for all of your online purchases. • Check your statements — Keep a record of your purchases and compare them to your bank statements. If there is a discrepancy, report it immediately. Katherine Fernandez Rundle has been the Miami-Dade County State Attorney since 1993 and was recently elected to the board of the National District Attorneys Association. Standup comic, writer Leifer to introduce book of essays BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ
Straight from taping NBC-TV’s latest edition of Celebrity Apprentice, stand-up comic Carol Leifer comes to the Alper JCC on Tuesday, Feb. 9 with her first book of humorous essays, When You Lie About Your Age, The Terrorists Win: Reflections on looking in the Mirror. The internationally acclaimed comedian and Emmy-nominated writer recently shared stories from her book with national audiences appearing on, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, all of the evening talk shows and Fresh Air with Terry Gross on NPR. Hailed by The Washington Post as one of the best comedic minds of our time, Carol Leifer’s writing credits include Saturday Night Live, The Larry Sanders Show and Seinfeld. It’s been said that she is the reallife inspiration for the character of Elaine played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Leifer’s first book is a laugh-out-loud look at life, love, and family and deals with her personal journey through aging, adoption, animal activism, feminism and faith. She explores coming to terms with yourself, and becoming the person you are meant to be. In 1998, she made her television debut starring on The WB’s Alright, Already, and was the co-executive producer of the ABC sitcom It’s Like You Know, starring Jennifer Grey. A native of Long Island, she began her career in the late 1970s as a stand-up comedian, performing in wellknown Manhattan clubs such as The Comic

Blanca Denis and Elizabeth Manso. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
April 15 is just a breath away. W-2s and K-1s are beginning to appear. The earlier you begin to prepare that dreaded tax return, the better! Blanca Denis and Elizabeth Manso of DM Accounting Services, Inc., say you should decide now whether you are going to be a “do-it-yourselfer” or have a professional prepare your return. By starting now you will have plenty of time to gather your paperwork, pick the right tax preparer or tax preparation software. “Be very wary if a tax preparer says that they can get you a larger refund than other tax preparers; if they charge a fee based on the size of your refund; or if they are not willing to sign your return and provide you with a copy,” says Denis. Remember, the ultimate legal responsibility for what is on your tax return rests with you. No one wants the IRS coming back at them. DM Accounting can be reached at 305318-7354 or at <www.dmaccounting.net>. CALLING IT QUITS BEFORE YOUR TIME Not getting the most out of life is a sad state of affairs. What causes people to stop reaching for a fulfilled life? Brown’s Airport, 1965. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Stuart Grant sent me this information about Brown’s Airport. “Pinecrest was home to a lot of airline pilots during the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. They worked for Pan Am, Eastern, National and other airlines that are now long gone. Aviation was a big industry in South Florida during those years and Miami International was an easy drive up from Pinecrest on Red Road or the then new Palmetto Expressway. “In 1962, if my brother Andrew and I were particularly well behaved, our mom might take us to Brown’s airport to watch the airplanes take off and land. That early childhood experience led me to eventually get my pilot’s license and buy an airplane after I turned 40. “I remember a mid-air crash between two planes about 1965 where one did an emergency landing at the Deering Bay (then Kings Bay) golf course and the other fell and crashed into someone’s patio about a mile southeast of Brown’s.” For more information on Brown’s Airport, go to: <http://www.members.tripod.com/airfields_freeman/FL/Airfields_F L_Miami_S.htm>. Are our culinary habits killing us? BY DR. PATRECE FRISBEE
Owner, SoBe Well Would you like to get out of fast food pileups and hop on the expressway of good nutrition? Then you need to think “outside the box.” Eating away from home when you’re in a time crunch does not automatically mean a trip to the Golden Arches for a super-sized combo meal. The term fast food generally refers to restaurants that sell quick, inexpensive takeout food. Now, even supermarkets offer several choices, many of them nutritionally superior to fast food and it doesn’t take any more time than a five-car wait at the drive-thru. It is possible to eat healthfully in the fast food lane. However, it may take some extra effort to get enough of the fruits, vegetables, and lean protein your body needs. Another challenge is to limit the amount of saturated fat and trans-fatty acids. Choose broiled or grilled food over fried foods and skip the heavy sauces and cheese. These often contain more fat than the protein itself. Fast food doesn’t have to be fat food.
Health There are more low-fat, low-calorie balanced meal options available now. Ask to see nutrient information at your favorite fast food restaurants. Careful food choices can make a big difference. Here are some tips for making hearthealthy choices with fast food: • Skip the mayonnaise or special sauce. A Burger King broiler with mayo has 530 calories and 26 grams of fat. A Burger King broiler without mayo has 370 calories and 9 grams of fat. • Order it grilled or broiled not fried. A McDonald’s Chicken McGrill without mayo is 340 calories and has 7 grams of fat. • A nine-piece McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets has 430 calories and 25 grams of fat. • Hold the cheese. Wendy’s Cheeseburger kid’s meal has 320 calories and 13 grams of fat. Wendy’s Hamburger kid’s meal has 270 calories and 10 grams of fat. • Use light or fat-free dressings.
Subway’s creamy Italian dressing, 1 tablespoon is 65 calories and 7 grams of fat. Subway’s Italian fat-free dressing, 1 tablespoon has 5 calories and 0 grams of fat. • Order smaller size burgers. Burger King’s hamburger has 320 calories and 15 grams of fat. Burger King’s double whopper with cheese has 1,010 calories and 67 grams of fat. • Order a baked potato instead. Wendy’s plain baked potato has 310 calories and 0 grams of fat. Wendy’s Great-Biggie fries has 570 calories and 27 grams of fat. • Quench your thirst. Have a bottle of water instead of a soft drink. It’s easy to make hormonally correct choices at a fast food restaurant. Fortunately, fast food restaurants always have protein — unfortunately much of it is high fat. So do yourself a favor and choose the chicken. The secret to balancing a meal at fast food restaurants is to know when to stop adding carbohydrates. The following are just a few hormonally correct, balanced fast food meals: • Jack in the Box - Chicken Caesar salad (dressing on the side). • Burger King - Broiled chicken salad, BK Broiler (no mayo).
• McDonald’s - Grilled chicken salad deluxe, McGrilled Chicken Classic. • Wendy’s - Chili 12-ounce Grilled Chicken Sandwich. • Taco Bell - Light Chicken Soft Taco, Steak Soft Taco. The best fast food meals can be found in your supermarket. Simply grab a bunch of pre-cut vegetables and a bag of pre-washed salad. At the deli, get a quarter pound of low-fat protein, such as chicken, tuna, or turkey. Add the low-fat protein to your precut vegetables and salad, top it off with some monosaturated olives and you have a hormonally correct, balanced fast food meal. It may be a little bit more expensive than your high-fat combo meal but aren’t you worth it? The time crunch is most likely here to stay. However, all that’s needed is a little planning to get on the fast track to a balanced nutritional lifestyle. Do you have a wellness related issue you would like to resolve? Send your questions to Dr. Patrece Frisbee at <drfrisbee@sobewell.com>. Patrece Frisbee is the author of Back to Basics With Balanced Nutrition. She may be contacted by calling 305-598-6767.

Former Olympian heads up Pinecrest Judo Club BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
A former U.S.A. Olympic Judo Team member is in charge of the new Judo Club at the Pinecrest Community Center. “Judo is the second most practiced sport in the world behind soccer,” says Orlando Fuentes. “Like soccer, it’s huge internationally, but not quite as popular here.” However, the program in Pinecrest is catching on and its success hinges on Fuentes, a Miami native who was on the U.S. Olympic team that competed in Atlanta in 1996. “That’s one of the things I cherish most,” he says. “I competed all over the world, but never on a stage that big. The Olympic gold medal, that’s the biggest prize in judo. That’s the only tournament with such a big venue and everyone was cheering for me.” While Fuentes did well at the Atlanta games, making it to the third round, he did not medal. He tried out for the Olympics three times, but only made it once. He did win the Pan Am Championship, medaled in the European Cup Tournament and made it onto two World Cup teams. He was also a U.S. National champion, a U.S. Open

retirement, he was the personal coach for a couple of athletes at the judo school he had been affiliated with much of his life. “Then this opportunity popped up. Somebody mentioned to me that they had opened this new community center and they were looking for programs to put in there, so they put me in contact with somebody and it went on from there,” he says. The Pinecrest Judo Club is open to children from all over the county. “Some of my kids do live in Pinecrest, but a lot of them don’t,” Fuentes says. “Right now, I have four programs. Each one is two days a week. Whatever program you’re in, you’re there two days a week practicing.” The programs include a Pee Wee program for four and five year olds and a basic class for kids up to age 12. He teaches them the basic techniques and the falls. “After that, I have an intermediate program. They start doing more judo,” he
says. “I also have an adult program.” The program is doing well. Fuentes says he has a great group of kids and parents. “It’s actually quite rewarding. I get kids who join the class who don’t talk for two weeks. After a couple weeks, they start to open up,” he says. “You see them grow as people and as a group.” Fuentes says Judo is derived from Jiu Jitsu and literally means the gentle way. The founder developed judo so it could be practiced safely, limiting injuries. “Judo is not like an ancient sport,” he says. “It was developed in the late 1800s as an educational and social system. It’s the first martial art in the Olympics. The great thing about judo is that it’s very different from other martial art. There is no punching, striking or kicking. We use throws, chokes and arm locks for submission. It’s actually a very safe sport.” For more information, call 305-9247447 or go to <www.Pinecrestjudo.com>.

Appraising a house is harder than it looks Lynda & Mike
Morgan
REAL ESTATE With markets so rapidly changing, it’s easy to imagine how property appraisers might sit in a darkened room waving their hands over a crystal ball and producing the mysterious and all-powerful document of a home’s value. Let’s dispel the notion of magical figures and look more carefully at the process. When comparing against similar properties, it’s not just the final price that counts. Appraisers also factor in any “incentives” offered, such as sellers who pay closing costs or remodeling allowances. Perhaps the most important factor that lenders review in an appraisal is the closing dates of the “comparables” (other homes by which yours is measured). Unfortunately, with today’s
stricter lending requirements, most “comps” must have sold within the last 60 or even 45 days to carry weight. Markets change so quickly that any sale price over two months old may be completely irrelevant. Now a few words about how foreclosures in a neighborhood affect determination of value. Technically, appraisers shouldn’t consider them because they don’t fit the Appraisal Institute’s definition of “a property reasonably exposed in a competitive market.” However, if several area homes have been abandoned, we know the negative effect that can have on a home’s “perceived” value. If you’re planning to sell, express your concerns about the appraisal process to your representative, who will offer explanations and suggestions for improving your report’s results. Mike and Lynda Morgan may be contacted at the Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate Offices at 12155 S. Dixie Hwy., 305-253-2800 or by email at <mmorgan321@aol.com>.

Jewish genetic testing, March 14 at Beth Am Yulman Campus BY LEE STEPHENS
Jewish genetic testing will be conducted March 14 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Temple Beth Am Yulman Campus, 5950 N. Kendall Drive. Jewish genetic diseases are a group of disorders that occur with higher frequency in the Jewish population. The Ashkenazi Jews — those whose ancestors were from Central and Eastern Europe (Poland, Russia, Germany, Lithuania) — are at higher risk than the general population for several genetic diseases, primarily because the Jewish communities in Europe were small and isolated, and members tended to marry within those communities. Since it is estimated that all individuals carry a small number of gene changes (called mutations), the ones present in those
small groups of European Jews became more prevalent in future generations. The mission of the Victor Center for Jewish Genetic Diseases at the University of Miami, led by director Dr. Deborah Barbouth, is to raise awareness of Jewish genetic diseases and to provide affordable genetic counseling and screening for healthy individuals at risk of being carriers of a gene mutation for at least one of these diseases. This is accomplished through Jewish community education programs and college campus outreach. The goal of this program is prevention of these devastating genetic diseases. A $25 pre-registration processing fee is required for the testing and space is limited. For questions or to make a reservation, call Debbie Wasserman at 786-897-9587.

JCC pre-school provides strong education foundation Linda K. Landy ALPER JCC NEWS My “baby” who turns 21 next month is talking about what to do when he graduates from college. How can this be? Surely it was just yesterday that I cautiously took him to his first day of pre-school at the JCC. We both cried. We’ve all come a long way since then. He’s now a senior in college and actively researching graduate school. And, the JCC pre-school has evolved into an amazing Early Childhood Development (ECD) program offering a nurturing, stimulating, warm and loving environment for children eight weeks to five years. The JCC ECD years were such a wonderful time for my two boys, my nieces and nephews and most of my friend’s children. The ECD program offered a safe, loving, fun and educational environment where moms could leave their precious bundles of energy for a few hours so we could grocery shop, exercise, volunteer or work. Many of my closest friends are women I met at the JCC
pre-school. Together we celebrated Jewish holidays, shared Shabbat each week with our toddlers, created play groups, filled our refrigerator doors with precious art work and watched our children prepare for the school years ahead. Children who learned their ABCs through the charming Alphabet Bucket are now honor students at prestigious colleges throughout the United States, and they still count among their closest friends the children who they met on the JCC playground. Just as they received a firm educational foundation at the JCC ECD, my children also began to develop their Jewish identity – the songs, the celebrations, the holiday stories. The J’s early childhood development program encourages growth, curiosity, confidence and a life-long love of learning as well as an appreciation of Jewish heritage in a warm and caring atmosphere. The curriculum is based upon knowledge of child development, stages of socio-emotional growth, theories of how children learn, and principles of physical development. Through play and exploration, children gain skills in and knowledge of early math, literacy, science, and social studies. Infants eight weeks to 12 months are lovingly cared for in the state-of-the-art infant room week days from 7:35 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Glen Greenstein ECD participates in the State of Florida’s Voluntary PreKindergarten program (for four-year-olds) and has been ranked in the top ten percent for the state. There is no registration fee and JCC membership is not required for the Pre-
Kindergarten program which runs from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. daily. Reduced rate full day care (7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and extended day care (9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.) are also available. Toddler and preschool programs are offered half-day (9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.), extended-day (9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.) and full day (7:35 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Program highlights include an outstanding early literacy program and the Growing with Mathematics program which provide four-year-olds with a strong foundation and kindergarten-readiness. Water safety swimming classes are offered in the fall and spring for three- and four-year-olds enrolled in the extended and full day program. There are also a wide variety of after school enrichment classes for preschoolers including swimming, baseball, basketball, kickers, dance, Spanish, art and movement. Mommy and Me classes, led by the talented Frankie and Stacey Steig, include Tiny Tots for toddlers 18 months to two years, Tot Time for the two to three-year-old set and Alphabet Soup, a more advanced program for three- to four-year-olds. Registration is now open for the 2010-11 school year. Confidential financial assistance is available. Call 305-271-9000, ext. 301, for information and a tour of the school.

Corvette adds Grand Sport model to 2010 lineup Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Grand Sport is one of the legendary names in Corvette racing history, the dream of renowned GM engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov. His dream led to the production of five special prototype Corvettes in 1963, but the project was later shelved, following GM’s agreement to stay out of manufacturerbacked auto racing. The five prototypes were based on the 1963 Corvette design and were hand-assembled under Duntov’s direction. While the cars looked like production models, they really were built for racing and shared little with the assembly line versions. Although never officially sanctioned by General Motors, the five Grand Sport prototypes were raced extensively in the 1960s by “private” racers who had strong contacts within Duntov’s circle. Today, all five prototypes are accounted for and listed among the most valuable in the Corvette collector market.
Chevrolet offered a limited-edition Grand Sport production model in 1996 to commemorate the five originals and mark the end of the C4 platform in Corvette production. Now, an all-new 2010 version combines Corvette’s LS3-based powertrain with wide-body styling, a wider track and a racing-bred suspension. It’s available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The LS3 6.2-liter engine is rated at 430 hp and 424 pounds-feet of torque with the standard exhaust system. An optional two-mode exhaust hikes the power to 436 horses. The Grand Sport replaces last year’s Z51 package and delivers better handling thanks to wider wheels and tires; revised shock, stabilizer bar and spring specifications, and specific gearing. It all adds up to a 0-60 performance of four seconds and an EPA-estimated 26 mpg on the highway. Grand Sport coupe models equipped with the manual transmission are uniquely equipped for race track competition, too, with a dry-sump oiling system, differential cooler and a rearmounted battery. The Grand Sport also includes: • Wider front and rear fenders, including specific front fenders with integrated Grand Sport badges;
Chevrolet has returned the storied Grand Sport name to the 2010 Corvette lineup, joining the ZR1, Z06 and standard coupe and convertible models.
• Z06-style front splitter and tall rear spoiler; • Functional brake ducts and extra cooling; • Unique 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels; painted finish standard and chrome finish optional; • Large 275/35ZR18 tires in front and 325/30ZR19 tires in the rear; • Z06-size brakes, including 14-inch front rotors with six-piston calipers and 13.4-inch rear rotors with four-piston calipers; • Specific manual transmission gear ratios, and • Specific rear axle ratio on automatic-
equipped models. A paddle-shift six-speed automatic transmission is available, while an optional Heritage package adds iconic front fender hash marks offered in four colors, as well as two-tone seats with Grand Sport embroidery. Base price on the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport is $58,540.

Facing foreclosure? Is bankruptcy an option for you? BY DANIA S. FERNANDEZ, ESQ., Attorney at Law Bankruptcy is a perfectly legitimate way to stop foreclosures and repossessions, put an end to lawsuits, protect paychecks from garnishments and regain control of your life. When filing for bankruptcy, it must be filed correctly in order to for it be successful. It is important to consult a bankruptcy attorney or debt relief lawyer in your area to ensure that you fully understand your options regarding bankruptcy and whether this is the best decision for your financial future. Personal bankruptcy is filed either as a Chapter 7 or a Chapter 13: Chapter 7—Liquidation—wipes out most of your debts and in return, you may have to give up some of your property. If you are considering a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and you are behind in your mortgage, make certain that you first reach a loan modification/loan workout or refinance with your lender. In the Chapter 7 Bankruptcy there will not be a loan modification option of your existing mortgage and, therefore, if you stop paying your mortgage you could lose your home. Your homestead is exempt. However, it can be foreclosed on if you do not pay. Chapter 13–Reorganization— enables you to pay off all or a portion of your debts during a three to five year period, yet does not require you to give up any of your assets to pay creditors. As long as you keep making payments, creditors will not bother you for payment or continue the foreclosure against your property. In the Chapter 13 Bankruptcy you can save your house. The following is a list of facts you should know about filing bankruptcy:
• Bankruptcy is a matter of public record. • A credit counseling course and financial management course are required. • Creditors will be prohibited from contacting you concerning your debt. • Florida law will exempt certain assets. • You may suffer some discrimination in future employment opportunities. • A stigma may still be attached to filing bankruptcy. • A record of filing for bankruptcy may remain on your credit profile for up to 10 years. • By eliminating your debt in Chapter 7 or making payments in a Chapter 13, you will immediately improve your credit score. In the midst of an economic crisis, please try not to forget the importance of life and your priorities. I have clients who are falling apart not only financially, but also emotionally and physically. Saving your home is not the only solution. A job is needed that can pay for the revised monthly payment. Activities to stimulate good health and family events to create memorable moments with children, family and friends are a must. Take all the necessary steps to preserve what is important to you by taking advantage all of your options. There are options available for you. And, more continue to come with evolving federal and state laws. Know your rights and know your options. Call an attorney today to guide you towards stabilizing your life.

Senate should amend house bill with Lincoln/Kyl amendment BY PHILLIP LYONS Senior Vice President, InSource, Inc. The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a bill entitled the “Permanent Estate Tax Relief for Families, Farmers and Small Businesses Act of 2009,” (H.R. 4154), which permanently sets the estate tax rate and exemption amount at 2009 levels. At the present time, the estate tax has a rate of 45 percent, with a $3.5 million exemption. The estate tax is scheduled to be repealed in 2010 and return in 2011 with a 55 percent rate and a $1 million exemption. I applaud Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-ND) for his efforts to bring attention to the plight of family-owned business and farmers who are deeply impacted by the estate tax. Although H.R. 4154 is a good step in the right direction, more is needed. The Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (IIABA), a major national industry group to which InSource, Inc. belongs, believes now is the time for Congress to significantly reform the estate tax to encourage investment
TAXE$ and growth in small business. This reform should come in the form of a decrease in the estate tax rate and/or increase in the exemption amount and should be indexed for inflation for the future. Earlier this year, the IIABA and its coalition partners, including 40 business trade associations that form the Family Business Estate Tax Coalition, voiced support for a bipartisan amendment sponsored by Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) and Jon Kyl (RAriz.) that was passed by the Senate during consideration of the congressional budget. The Lincoln/Kyl amendment would reduce the top rate to 35 percent and increase the exemption to $5 million. Unfortunately, the amendment was non-binding as are all amendments considered during congressional budget proceedings. I hope, as does the IIABA, that the Senate will adopt the Lincoln/Kyl amendment and provide relief to family-owned small businesses which the estate tax disproportionately impacts. It’s these small and family-owned busi-

nesses that serve local communities and fuel our economy. Without real permanent relief, family-owned small businesses are unable to plan ahead and make important business decisions. Many of them are asset-rich, yet lack liquidity to pay estate taxes when an owner passes away. There is evidence that the estate tax hinders the perpetuation of familyowned businesses because survivors are often forced to sell the business to pay their tax. This is especially true in Florida, which is one of 23 states that impose its own tax in addition to the federal tax. Florida’s estate tax
is imposed on wholly or partially-owned personal and real properties owned by any individual, including real estate, life insurance, annuities, stocks, bonds, accounts receivable, notes receivable, equipment, autos, furniture, artwork, jewelry and money. In Florida, the total or a part of the state death tax credit permissible by the federal government is picked up for taxation purposes. Money ‘must-dos’ for 2010 BY EDMUNDO LACAYO
Here’s a new year’s resolution: Ditch your old spending habits and get out of debt. Low interest rates and uncertain financial markets make now an ideal — if not critical — time to review your finances and your financial relationships. Your borrowing and investments should be at the top of your review list. Here are five ideas to help you get a good start for 2010 – not just a new year, but the start of a new decade. • Save time with online banking — Using the Internet to interact with your financial institution can help simplify your financial affairs. Top reasons to consider online banking include conveniently receive and pay your bills online, view your statements, account balances, transaction history and images of your checks. Mobile banking is also a great way to view account balances and transaction history, and with on-demand text message alerts you can receive a text message on your mobile phone with your account balance and last three transactions. • Track your expenses — It’s important to keep all of your expenses in order with a service like Great Florida Bank’s Personal FinanceWorks, no charge for all GFB customers who have a checking account and are enrolled in Great Online Banking. Powered by Quicken, America’s number one personal finance software, Personal Finance Works allows you to create a complete overview of your finances and see where you are spending money
MONEY MATTER$ and how you spent it. It’s a great tool in these times when people are watching every dollar. • Enjoy the convenience of direct deposit of your paycheck — With direct deposit, you don’t spend time or effort cashing checks. It’s completely secure. The funds are deposited electronically – there’s no time wasted having the checks clear. There are no fees, and it avoids the possibility of theft or loss of checks. • Protect your credit record with overdraft protection on your checking account. Maintaining a solid credit history is an important part of managing your finances. A good credit record can make future borrowing easier and help you qualify for lower interest rates. • Plan to reward yourself — New Year’s resolutions usually don’t stick. Go on a diet, save money, don’t spend. We start the year like ascetic monks and by February we discover that the monastic life isn’t for us. Therefore, it’s important to have one resolution that is fun. For myself, it means saving up money for a special family trip later this year. If we keep the first four resolutions, we’ll reward ourselves for getting the new decade off to a good financial start. Edmundo Lacayo is the Pinecrest and Doral market lead for Great Florida Bank. Topical Antifungals for Ringworm BY SONIA MARTINEZ, RPH
Ringworm (also known as tinea) is not a worm, but a kind of skin fungus that appears in a round-shaped itchy patch and has gradually outwards spreading borders. You can identify ringworm symptoms if you find circular patches on your skin that are reddish towards the border and paler in the center. Ringworm develops in a moist, tropical climate and exposure to damp soil and infected pets are often responsible for their spread. Ringworm is contagious in nature and if you use personal objects of an infected person, you can develop ringworm symptoms. Over-the-counter (OTC) topical antifungal creams are usually adequate for treatment of ringworm. While newer products containing terbinafine or butenafine are often recommended, older medications such as clotrimazole and miconazole may still be effective, but they may need to be used longer. Creams and solutions usually work better than sprays and powders, and solutions may be preferred for hairy areas. Because the infection usually extends further than the visible rash, it is good to apply the antifungal to the affected area and one to two inches beyond the rash. Terbinafine or butenafine need to be used for at least 1 to 2 weeks and clotri-

mazole or miconazole for at least 2 to 4 weeks even if the skin looks healed. Itching usually improves quickly with antifungal treatment. Our compounding pharmacy can prepare prescription topical antifungals with penetrant enhancers for difficult-to-treat areas such as nails. talent could help you sort out some of your financial issues. If you are offered any sort of financial partnership this week, examine the fine print carefully. There could be hidden caveats buried in all the legalese.
Gemini - One of your friends has something of the bohemian artist energy about them. This person is big on alternative movies, music and theater, and you can learn a lot from them. If you are still single, there may be potential for romance. This artsy person is not as coldly intellectual as they seem!
Cancer - The office is tense and uncertain and for a change, you really long to escape it. You will have an opportunity to partake in some recreational activity, and you do need to get away from the rat race. An idea will come to you while you are relaxing or enjoying yourself that solves a major problem.
Leo - You may find that a lecture or class is getting more interesting, especially if you are learning about alternative health care or holistic treatments. You have an opportunity to learn something that could dramatically improve your health or lifestyle.
Virgo - Sit down and think about what you need for the future. Then get together with an investment planner and start making it happen. There are some wonderfully supportive aspects that will lead you to good financial advice this week. Be careful that you don't spend too much money this week.
Libra - Don't talk this week. Do. Get out together, share each other's company. Enjoy your partner, body and soul. If you are single, get out of the house, take lunch outside the office, get out and be seen. A soul mate may be closer than you think.
Scorpio - You are going to be getting some kind of special benefit or "perk" soon. You may be losing weight, or hearing about positive changes in your health and wellness. All that hard work is starting to pay off. You deserve a treat - a healthy, low-fat treat that is.
Sagittarius - You are long overdue for a little fun and recreation. You may be buying a new game for your computer, going to a movie theater, or to a local theme park for a last-minute getaway. You will have a lot of energy this week, and some wild and playful ideas.
Capricorn - A home-based business should have two key ingredients for success - a good, solid, supportive partner, and an outstanding creative idea. A little luck and investment from third parties couldn't hurt either. You could find many of the conditions you need are coming into place.
Aquarius - You may be facing something of faux pas, likely caused by stumbling over your own words at a public event. Don't fret so much, you will recover quickly and should be able to make up for any minor faux pas with a little self-deprecating humor. In fact, you could end up the toast of the town!
Pisces - You could make money this week from teaching, research, paperwork or through phone or a mail-order business. The keywords are "communication" and "information". You have knowledge and access to information resources that are valuable to others.
