rime declined dramatically in the Village during 2009, falling by 19.3 percent from 2008 levels. The annual report, released by the Pinecrest Police Department earlier this month and presented to the Village Council, shows that there were just 662 incidents of Part One Crime reported to police last year, as opposed to 820 incidents in 2008. Part One Crime includes homicide, sex offenses, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, arson and auto theft. Almost all crime categories showed declines, except for assault, which remained static at nine incidents, and there were no murders in Pinecrest last year, as there were none in 2008. There also were no cases of arson last year and in the previous year. Robbery, auto theft and larceny recorded the most significant statistical declines. The report showed that there were just 13 reported incidents Chief Hohensee of robbery in 2009, down sharply from 22 robberies in 2008. At the same time, just 23 auto thefts were reported to Village police last year, a sharp drop from the 48 cases of stolen vehicles police investigated in 2008. And there were 536 cases of larceny, against 655 the previous year. Incidents of burglary also declined, though the fall off was not as strong. There were 81 reported burglaries in Pinecrest last year, against 84 in 2008. In the report, graced by a color cover picture of the Police Department Honor Guard, Pinecrest Police Chief John Hohensee, said that even with the decline in crime statistics, 2009 had been a challenging year, primarily due to the national economic recession.

Bet Shira ‘Mitzvah Day,’ March 14 BY BETH YEGELWEL

13615 S. Dixie Hwy #113 Miami Fl, 33176 305-253-5740 www.Facebook.com/mauricesjewelers Store Hours: Monday-Saturday 10-6pm

Mark your calendars and reserve the date, March 14 will be your chance to perform a mitzvah, the Hebrew word for good deed. People of all backgrounds and religions are encouraged to come together to start the year off with a good deed! It’s only a mitzvah away. Bet Shira’s Tikkun Olam Committee schedules its annual Mitzvah Day to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, March 14, at Bet Shira Congregation, 7500 SW 120 St. Bet Shira congregants, school-age children, teens, seniors and families will join forces to clean up, entertain, comfort, visit, organize, collect and deliver needed goods throughout Miami-Dade. “Doing a mitzvah is not just doing a good deed, it is part of our daily lives,” says Carol Stein, chairperson of Mitzvah Day. “Although Mitzvah Day is sponsored by a Jewish organization, Tikkun Olam welcomes people of all religions to participate in this special event.” This year’s activities include volunteering with Community Partnership for the Homeless; gardening at Metro Zoo; planting trees with Treemendous Miami; visiting with families at Inn Transition South; and participating in Bet Shira’s annual blood drive. In

addition, school-age children can participate in various activities, such as assembling toiletry kits for the homeless and packing lunch bags to be delivered to Camillus House. In 2009, the Tikkun Olam Committee introduced Mitzvah Fair, where Bar and Bat Mitzvah children displayed and shared information about their own mitzvah project. With its success, Tikkun Olam is bringing Mitzvah Fair back this year. The Fair will be held in Bet Shira’s lobby from 10 a.m. until noon. New this year is the collection of old, but working, computers to be sent to students in the Caribbean, Mexico and Latin America. Tikkun Olam also will collect gently worn clothing and shoes, toiletries, books, toys and videos, linens, eyeglasses and medical supplies such as crutches and bandages to benefit various organizations throughout Miami and Haiti. Stein encourages those interested to join the Bet Shira volunteers for a “nosh,” then meet with an activity captain to pick up directions and instructions. “And you’re off to do a great big mitzvah! “It’s that easy,” she says. “Together, we can make a difference and do our part to repair the world, Bet Shira style!” For more information, call 305-238-2601.

Ethan Matzner received far fewer gifts than usual for his seventh birthday, but he wasn’t unhappy. In fact, Matzner asked his friends who attend his Dec. 29 birthday party to make a donation to the Children’s Home Society instead. The idea came about when Ethan’s dad, Gary Matzner, had friends visiting over the summer and they talked raising money to build African schools. The friends told Ethan that when they have birthday parties, they have their friends donate money instead of gifts. Matzner and his wife, Veronica, talked about the idea with Ethan, telling him at his birthday party they could ask people to give money instead of presents. Ethan bought into the plan. “I thought it was a very good idea,” he said. “I told some of them (my friends). They said, ‘I agree with you.’ We got $700, so pretty much everyone listened.” While Ethan is a bright and mature first grader, his mom, Veronica, prepared him so it was easier for him to agree. “I told him we needed to get rid of old toys to get ready for new stuff,” she saids, adding with almost 40 children attending the party, most of the gifts were just going to sit on Ethan’s shelves, rarely seeing the light of day. She also told him he didn’t have to give up all his presents. “I’ll make sure you get the ones you

want. So that’s how we got the idea, and how I enticed him,” she said. “I didn’t mind because I got a few gifts from my family,” Ethan said. Gary is very proud of his youngest son. “It worked out well. I was amazed,” he said. Although their friends used their birth parties to raise money for African schools, the Matzners decided that they preferred to donate the money closer to home. As a result, they chose to donate the funds to the Children’s Home Society. After the party, Ethan and his mom went to the facility to present the check in person. “I wanted him to see how fortunate he is,” she said. However, there are no children at the CHS facility now. Because of a change in the state’s philosophy, the children are immediately placed in foster care so Ethan wasn’t able to see the children he helped. The administrators that were there were happy to receive the donation and they gave Ethan a plaque. “I felt very happy. If there were people they would have been very excited to have things. I will go there again,” Ethan said. Matzner said Ethan is quite proud of the plaque. Ethan said that in the future he wants to have another fundraising birthday party because he says he knows there are a lot of people who probably need the money and supplies that money can buy.

MICHAEL JACOBSON Singing and dancing is one way that Palmetto High School senior Michael Jacobson has used to earn more than 650 community service hours. “I participated in the Kids2Kids community show for two years,” Jacobson says. “I really enjoy dancing, but I’m not really good at it. I put in the extra effort to try not to look like a fool on stage. But, yeah, I enjoy it.” During his sophomore year, Jacobson earned hours by coaching a soccer team for two seasons at Howard Drive Elementary School through the Miami-Dade County Sports program. The team was made up of fourth and fifth grade students. Even though he coached soccer, Jacobson doesn’t have much soccer experience. “I had limited soccer experience when I was younger,” he says. “Hopefully that was enough to help them succeed at the level they were playing.” Jacobson’s main interest these days is television production. He’s the vice president of the television production class. The television production class reports on every single school event and every club. “We’re asked to make commercials to promote it (an event), film it and provide publicity for it throughout the school,” he says. Jacobson will travel this spring for the TV production class. “In March we’re going to the student television network convention in Anaheim,”

he says. “That’s a great opportunity because we get to compete against other schools. Last year we won the best daily broadcast.” The show submitted for the award was produced during the 2008 Presidential election season. “We had different features on the candidates and the whole election process,” Jacobson says. “Everyone does their part to make the videos.” Jacobson spent a summer semester in Israel at the Alexander Muss High School between his sophomore and junior years. “I enjoyed it,” he says. “It was a nice change of pace. It meant being away from my family for seven weeks. It gave me time to find some perspective and reflect on some of my past and future decisions.” This past summer he participated in a research program at the University of Pennsylvania in the biomedical research department. “I did it to experience a laboratory setting and see if science would interest me in the future,” he says. “I realized that laboratory work may not be the most exciting thing, but I’m not ruling out anything in the medical profession. However, laboratory work is not going to be it.” Jacobson also likes journalism, but he’s not yet ready to decide what he wants to do with his life. “I feel like there’s still a lot that I haven’t been exposed to, so I think it’s unfair to try and pinpoint my life at 17 years old,” he says. Jacobson has applied to Northwestern, the University of Virginia and Amherst. He remains undecided about a major course of study. The stress of being a high school student in today’s society is something that he’s working to change. Jacobson was co-chair of the Challenge Success program that Leah Messing brought to Palmetto last year. The program, which originated at Stanford, seeks to challenge the academic culture not only at Palmetto, but at other schools as well. “Students today are physically and mentally and unhealthy because of the pressures put on them by parents, teachers and themselves,” he says. “You are a failure if you don’t take eight AP courses and get straight As.” By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

JONATHAN MUENCH Palmetto High senior Jonathan Muench has accumulated about 700 community service hours, many of them coming from his participation in the Boys Scouts and his Eagle project. “I’ve been involved in Boy Scouts since I was in the second grade,” Muench says. His Eagle project was at the Deering Estate on Old Cutler Road, a location Muench selected because he lived near by. “I created a recycling program and had a bay clean up,” he says. The project took about nine months to planning. “You have to create a plan and that plan gets submitted to the district,” Muench says. Once the plan is approved, the scout can then move forward in executing it. Usually, the scout has one or more days to complete the project after the plan is set in motion and other scouts will turn out to help him. Muench’s project was implemented on Feb. 7, 2009, and started at 8 a.m. “You have all the people gather around and I tell them exactly what they need to do,” Muench says. “You give them an overview of the project. We had one group working along the mangrove trail, one group working the bay area and the third group building the recycling shelter.” Muench was awarded his Eagle badge and pin last June. “After your Eagle scout project you have to do a write up,” he says. “It takes another

month to do that. Then you take that to the board of review.” After the board of review comes the Eagle Court of Honor. Troop 457 has a ceremony for all the boys who earn the Eagle badge. Even though he has his Eagle, Muench is still involved with his troop. This school year he has had a leadership role as senior patrol leader. Senior patrol leaders are the top scout in the troop and lead the meetings and campouts. He also attends Eagle projects. “There are so many in our troop,” he says. “There is one every Saturday from now until March. Every weekend and I try to go to most of them.” At Palmetto High, Muench is taking four Advanced Placement courses and is involved in the Photography Club. “I love photography,” he says. “I took photography last year and I really liked it.” He’s now in an advanced photography class, uses a 35 millimeter camera and shoots black and white film. He’s also in Key Club, which does a lot of community service. Outside of school, Muench is in the Order of the Arrow, a Boy Scout organization, and works as a bus boy and host at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Suniland, which is owned by his father. “I think everybody should work at a restaurant,” he says. “I work on Sundays, which is the busiest day. We do breakfast lunch and dinner. I usually go out to dinner with my dad Sunday nights.” For fun, Muench likes to skateboard, a sport he enjoys so much that he actually took a job at a skateboard shop for a while. He skateboards wherever he can. “We go all over Miami,” he says. “We go everywhere.” College is next on Muench’s agenda. He hopes to become a creative arts director in advertising. He interested in attending the University of Florida, the University of Miami, New York University, the University of Virginia, Syracuse or the University of Michigan. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

MINDY WANG Palmetto High School junior Mindy Wang is an outstanding piano player. She has won numerous piano competitions sponsored by the Miami Music Teachers

Association for solo, duos and duets. In piano duos two players play two pianos, while in duets two players play a single piano. Wang was only seven years old when she started playing the piano and she has been playing for more than nine years. “With this experience, I was able to use my ability to serve the community,” she says. “Currently, I am the church pianist and I am in the adult choir at the Chinese Baptist Church of Miami. I also recently played at the Roxie Performing Arts Center for the play West Side Story. I was the pianist in the live orchestra.” Because of her music and other experiences, Wang has accumulated more than 960 hours in community service. “I also play at charity events such as the Simon Evening of Giving at Dadeland Mall, usually in November,” she says. Wang also has performed at the St. Anne’s Nursing Center. “I worked there this summer; I saw the elderly needed help,” she says. “I entertained them on the piano and I was just there

when they needed me. They were happy with what I played. I would play something more soothing that would have them at peace, nothing too exciting or too quick.” Wang was recently picked by her music theory teacher to perform at the 2009 Distinguished Citizen Award dinner for Boy Scouts on Nov. 21. “I played some Broadway songs like All I Ask of You from Phantom of the Opera,” she says. “Things that would be familiar to them.” When she’s not off performing, Wang is involved in school activities. She’s a member of Interact, the science national honor society, the National Honor Society, the Social Science Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America and Invisible Children United. “They are children in Uganda who are being abducted for a war led by a notorious man,” she says about Invisible Children United. “We need to stop the war. Currently it’s not successful and we’re trying to save the children. They are considered invisible because they’re not being

looked at.” As a member of Future Business Leaders of America, Wang takes part in the organization’s competitions in business communication. She also competed in a pre-calculus contest last year for Mu Alpha Theta. She didn’t win and that taught her something. “I learned that I should strive harder, that I should strive for perfection,” she says. Last year, Wang worked at Jackson South Community Hospital in the OB/Gyn department. “I did some clerical services, but I also had the chance to witness babies being born and I assisted the mothers,” she says. “I gave them juice drinks and when they needed linens I helped get those. From my experience in a hospital, I realized that mothers have to go through a lot. Giving birth is a wonderful thing. No words can describe it. It’s really amazing.” That experience helped to solidify her interest in a career in the medical field.

“The crisis in the national housing market was clearly evident in our Village as unprecedented numbers of homes fell to foreclosure,” said Hohensee. “This, coupled with a morbid construction industry once a hotbed of activity, conspired to adversely impact our tax revenues, while simultaneously requiring us to protect more and more vacant residences. On other matters, Hohensee, noting that he was starting his second decade as head of the police department, said he was pleased that it had finally achieved full staffing. “The department achieved full staffing in every position,” he said. “That’s something that from year to year we have had

trouble with. I attribute some portion of that to the fact that our officers finally got the industry-standard pension that they had long sought and now feel that our police department can be a long-term career for them.” However, Hohensee said he considered the department’s achieving state and international accreditation as the most significant accomplishment of all. “That has independently validated the quality of law enforcement services our agency provides day in, day out,” he said. “And with a top-notch workforce in place that I proudly assert is second to none, the future of the Pinecrest Police Department is indeed bright.”

Chilorio’s is a very Mexican success FROM ROBIN’S DESK ––––––––––––––––––––– BY ROBIN KORTH ––––––––––––––––––

Diego Cortes, a native Mexican, had a vision for his MBA project. His “vision” became a reality with the opening of two Chilorio’s Very Mexican restaurant locations in Miami. Diego Cortes, Cortes managed owner of Chilorio’s. several small companies that he start- –––––––––––––––– ed while studying in Monterrey, Mexico for a degree in Business and Industrial Engineering. But it was a hankering for his native cuisine that inspired his MBA project, drive his studies at the Wharton School of Business and lead him to a career as a restaurateur. “I had been in Philadelphia only a short time and I was looking for the entrepreneurial project needed to complete my MBA studies,” said Cortes. “During long nights at the books, I dreamed of the tacos and salsas of my homeland. There was just no place in Philadelphia that offered the food I loved — authentic, fresh, simple, wholesome ‘very’ Mexican food.” Cortes’ search led him to his MBA project — Chilorio’s. From start to finish, he worked through the particulars of creating his Mexican restaurant. MBA in hand, Cortes returned to his native Mexico and teamed up with one of the country’s better chefs to create a menu and the procedures to offer food just as it was served in Mexico. After he mastered the recipes, Cortes brought his project to fruition with the opening of Chilorio’s, two Mexican restaurants that sparkle with a cheerful ambiance and the use only fresh ingredients to serve up authentic Mexican cuisine. Chilorio’s are located at 130 Miracle Mile in Coral Gables and at 8211 S. Dixie Hwy. near Dadeland. Delivery is available. For more information, go to <www.chilorios.com>. BRASS ROOTS TRIO TO PERFORM AT CHRIST THE KING Christ the King Lutheran Church offers a free concert to the community on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. The Brass Roots Trio’s 40 Days is an inspirational Lenten program of Baroque, jazz and contemporary sacred music

interwoven with scripture and meditations. From cathedrals in England, the Crystal Cathedral in California, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York to smaller churches throughout the country, the Brass Roots Trio has touched the hearts of thousands of listeners with a ministry that reaches beyond musical style or a certain religion. With a virtuoso command of their instruments, Rosetta Senkus Bacon (piano), Travis Heath (trumpet) and Christina Ciraulo (horn and violin) infuse their music with passion and sincerity. Their genuine love for what they are doing is felt by the audience. They have been interviewed on NPR several times and their performance at the 2009 Chicago Brass Festival was broadcast on Chicago’s classical radio station WFMT. In December 2009, the trio was honored to perform at the White House. Christ the King Lutheran Church is

I joined United Teachers of Dade when I first became a teacher. My husband attributes this to having seen Norma Rae a few times too many, but it was just something we did in my family. We supported civil rights, equal pay for equal work, and workers’ rights to organize. We fought for justice through protest marches. We went to Labor Day picnics even though my dad was an accountant and my mother, a housewife. I chose to become a teacher, but when I did, I had no idea that my profession was one that was characterized either as America’s Sweetheart, or America’s Boogeyman, depending not on how well we taught or how much we cared, but instead on politics and money. America loves teachers and most real people believe we are not compensated well enough for what we do, but people are sold a bill of goods about us by politicians and bureaucrats when it suits their purposes. Too often, teachers get painted as Boogeymen – blamed for problems caused by systemic or political mistakes or conflicts. As a member of United Teachers of Dade, I began to become more active at my school. I discovered just how thorny the process could become, and when I persisted, the other union members elected me as steward. Little did I know that my activism at school would lead me to becoming president of UTD today. At each step, I encountered more unbelievable Boogeyman stuff. One notable low point for the image of teachers came in 2004, when Secretary of Education Rod Paige called the National Education Association a “terrorist organization.” He said the teachers’ union used “obstructionist scare tactics” in its fight over disagreements about No Child Left Behind. I scratched my head. Was I a terrorist? I thought I was more like a patriot, fighting to

make public education equitable for all students, and I did so with all my heart. I found myself embroiled in the politics that characterizes teachers as the sole culprit in America’s declining educational achievement. When data look good, the bureaucrats claim credit: Florida’s rising national achievement is credited to testing, accountability, and scripted curricula, all of which have no proven positive effect on learning. Proven methods of student improvement (which teachers know about) are seldom mentioned: smaller class sizes definitely improve student achievement, and research further proves the efficacy of professional development for teachers and of mentoring programs for new teachers. School failure, however, is typically defined as the fault of bad teachers, apparently legions of us, many belonging to teachers’ unions. We celebrated our new MiamiDade Teacher of the Year February 3rd – a happy occasion that celebrates teaching excellence. Once again, our winner will compete to become Florida’s Teacher of the Year. These awards are very real, but they can seem like rhetoric if government imposes systems that cannot work, like Florida’s proposed application for federal Race to the Top funds. I urge the Florida Department of Education, our legislators, and Florida’s Board of Education to put down its weapons and meet with us to collaborate. One of the great lessons of a public education is how to work with others. I’m again extending my hand to the Florida Department of Education. I am asking Commissioner Smith to work with us for the common good of our students.

The United Teachers of Dade represents 38,000 teachers and school support personnel in MDCPS. The union is committed to being a leader in creating public school reform, fostering a quality public education for all students and elevating the professional status of teachers, paraprofessionals, office employees, and all school support personnel.

Adult Orthodontics: What is “Instant Orthodontics?”

“Instant orthodontics” is an esthetic dental procedure where crooked teeth are made to look straight or gaps are closed by attaching porcelain or composite veneers (facings) or crowns to the teeth. The results are promised in 1 day to a couple of weeks, which appeals to many consumers in today’s “I want it yesterday” society. So which procedure is better, “instant orthodontics” or orthodontic treatment to move the teeth into proper alignment? Veneers and crowns are great when changes in tooth size, shape &/or color are desired (as with worn, fractured, or malformed teeth, for example). However, there are drawbacks to “instant orthodontics.” Veneers and crowns require the removal of tooth structure, so tooth sensitivity, root canal complications and long term gum problems can result. Additionally, veneers and crowns require future replacement since their average lifetime is approximately 10 years. For patients who have well-shaped but misaligned teeth or have issues with their bite, orthodontics is a better treatment choice. Excellent esthetic options include Invisalign, clear braces, and lingual braces (on the back of the teeth). Orthodontic treatment leaves the natural teeth intact and in a more ideal position, facilitating their cleaning for improved overall gum health. In most case where “instant orthodontics” would seem to be an option, orthodontics can take a relatively short period of time with the added benefit of avoiding the removal of healthy tooth structure. Compared to years past, more adults are enjoying the enhancement in dental and facial esthetics that orthodontics can provide. If you are interested in improving the appearance of your smile, consider visiting our office. You may be pleasantly surprised when you find out that orthodontics can be substantially less costly than the slew of restorations that “instant orthodontics” may require.

InSource, Inc employees turned out in force earlier this month to help future homeowners build their dream homes at the Jordan Commons Habitat for Humanity community in Homestead. Some InSource team members helped put up the frames used to hold the cement that was poured around the top of the

CBS-brick construction, while other InSource staffers loaded lumber into trailers. All worked hard, with purple thumbs flashed as badges of honor. “We made a difference, which is what matters most,” said InSource vice chairman Bill Parker. “Even in this tough residential real estate market, Habitat homeowners have less than one percent of their mortgages in

default,” added senior vice president Charles Vodicka. “Homeowners are taught how to take care of their property, as well as some basic finance. What a difference that kind of help makes in people’s lives.” InSource, Inc. is headquartered at 9500 S. Dadeland Blvd. The firm provides a full range of property, casualty, surety, professional liability, employee benefits and life and health insurance products.

In the wake of the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked Port-auPrince, Haiti, new Suniland Shopping Center tenants pledge to donate all the proceeds from their Grand Opening festivities to Project Medishare’s “Save Haiti Saturday” relief fund. New franchise Tutti Frutti and the wellknown Sir Pizza will open for business in early February. From 2-6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, Terranova invites the community to come out and “shop for a cause” at their official Grand Opening. Suniland Shopping Center is located on S. Dixie Highway, between the 112th and 117th streets. “Save Haiti Saturday” is a nationwide fundraising initiative to benefit Project Medishare/UM Global Institute for Haiti’s massive medical relief effort. The more money that is raised, the more support that can be provided to Mediashare’s team of doctors, nurses and rescue workers who are working tirelessly around the clock performing surgeries and taking care of the sick and wounded during this most critical time in Haiti. All who are interested in the classic Miami pizza or a healthy sweet treat while supporting Haiti relief efforts are invited to attend. Tutti Frutti is a self-serve frozen yogurt concept that originated in Korea, but now has over 180 locations across the globe.

Certified Kosher by the Orthodox Union, Tutti Frutti offers all-natural, no- and lowfat frozen yogurt in several unique flavors including mango, passion fruit and green apple. Customers dispense their choice of frozen young into a cup then select toppings from the toppings bar. There are 24 fresh fruit and dry topping options to choose from. Charged by the ounce, customers can mix and match frozen yogurt flavors and toppings to taste. Sir Pizza’s thin crust dough made inhouse with fresh ingredients paired with their specialty home made sauce makes for a delectable and authentic Chicago-style pizza pie. In addition to the best pizza and service in town customers can indulge in delicious Stromboli blankets, subs, salads as well as freshly baked cookies and cupcakes. The Suniland location of Sir Pizza is the third South Florida location open outside of Key Biscayne, where the original Sir Pizza has been for over 30 years. The owners of Sir Pizza-Suniland also own the Sir Pizza on Sunset Drive and 117th avenue. “We feel that the Pinecrest community will be pleased with these unique dining experiences and we look forward to the successful launch of both establishments while joining the community in supporting a noteworthy cause,” said Terranova executive vice president Mindy McIlroy. JCC events tell stories through comedy and art Linda K. Landy ALPER JCC NEWS For years I listened to my father complain that my mother’s brother called every morning at exactly 9:03. Several years ago, I began receiving my own regular morning call. Although not quite so precise in the timing, the phone rings daily around 9 a.m. It is my father. When I pointed out this out to my father, we had a good laugh. That does not keep him from calling almost every morning around 9 a.m. Growing up, I remember hearing hilarious stories about the behavior of my grandparents and other relatives of that generation. Now I tell my kids similar anecdotes about my parent’s generation. I recently began to ask myself: have my kids already started comparing notes on my idiosyncrasies? What will they tell their children? Does the ability to laugh at our families smooth the rough edges? Most great comedians make their living from telling the audience about their Comedian own personal life Steve Solomon experiences. The fact ––––––––––––– that many of us can relate makes the stories that much funnier. You can hear such a comedian on Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center. Steve Solomon will perform his uproariously funny, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m Still in Therapy. With perfect timing, Solomon takes the audience on a journey filled with non-stop

laughs beginning in his childhood with his twin sister, all the way to the present day. It is a look at families and relationships through the eyes of a comic, with Uncle Willie, Steve’s new therapist, cousin Sal (and Sal’s parole officer) and a myriad of other astounding characters. Each person is brought to life with Steve Solomon’s gift for creating voices, perfecting dialects and producing wacky sound effects. Having headlined throughout the United States and Europe for over twenty years, Steve’s stories relate to the bizarre side of the human condition. His humor is well received because the tales are heartwarming and the characters portrayed are ones that people can identify with, friends and relatives who they love and tolerate. “Steve is Alan King, Billy Crystal, with a smidgen of Don Rickles and George Carlin all thrown in,” says Variety. The Whole Megillah — New Images of an Old Book The J is celebrating Purim Feb. 28 through Apr. 4 with the exhibition of noted artist David Wander’s beautiful and compelling Megillah, a 55-foot-long accordion book displayed in 12 illuminated panels. Wander has rendered and inscribed his own interpretation of the story of Purim. Deviating from the traditional story of Esther and Haman, Wander tells a tale of starkly different proportions. The Hebrew text of Esther is embedded on rice paper and surrounded by a cacophony of images that interpret the history of Jewish survival. Wander is known for his serene but intensely colored landscapes in pastel, oil and watercolor. He has illustrated manuscripts of religious texts and created posters for Broadway plays. Wander, a New York native, received his B.F.A. from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York and the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. He has exhibited his pastel and acrylic works at numerous galleries

Community shows compassion at ‘The Race’ BY ROBIN WOLFE “The Race” touched lives from Seattle to the east coast of Florida. More than 350 people attended the three-mile event on Jan. 31 to show support for the Children’s Bereavement Center (CBC) and to honor Alexander “Zander” Standiford, a young man who touched so many in the 18 years that he graced this earth. Held at Coral Reef Park since 2003, The Race was originated by Palmetto Bay resident Adrian Dubow and her family. “My brother, Brent Hershman had passed away at the age of 35,” Dubow said. “In lieu of gifts for my 40th birthday, I asked them to make a contribution to the CBC in my brother’s memory. Dr. Mindy Cassel, executive director and co-founder of the CBC, and my girlfriends established a memorial fund in Brent’s honor.” During that year, Adrian’s daughter Rachel became a Bat Mitzvah. For her mitzvah project, Rachel decided to raise money for her uncle’s Memorial Fund. Rachel’s Race was established as an annual CBC event to help children, teens and adults who have lost loved ones. In 2006, Brian Dubow became a Bar Mitzvah and decided to collaborate with his sister, Rachel. They renamed the event “The Race.” Both Rachel and Brian have been trained to volunteer at the CBC. “My hands-on work as a CBC volunteer has been very motivating,” Brian said. “I feel so good to be able to give back to the community and to help a great cause prosper.” From stuffing envelopes to obtaining donations of water donated by Publix, bagels and cream cheese from Roasters’ n Toasters, Dunkin Donuts, coffee from Starbucks on Old Cutler and support from father and husband Kenny Dubow and his workplace, Kaufman Rossin & Co., the event has evolved into both a family and a community affair. This year, The Race was dedicated to Alexander Standiford, a friend of Rachel’s from Palmetto Senior High. “I’ve always been involved with the CBC; they have truly been there for our community over the years,” Rachel said. “In 2007 we dedicated The Race to Palmetto student Angel Diaz, who died in a tragic Jet Ski accident. This year, Zander’s death hit so close to home for me many of my friends. Dedicating The Race in his honor was a nice way to consolidate our memories and to honor Zander and The CBC.” During The Race, Zander’s father, Les Standiford, expressed his appreciation for everyone’s love and support. “I was honored to have the CBC dedicate The Race to Zander for our entire family has enjoyed participating in one race and walk together for many years and as a kid who dedicated much of his life to athletics, Zander would have been proud to see all those people get up early to run in his memory and for such a good cause.” The Race raised more than $12,000 for the

IRA rollovers gather your scattered retirement assets BY JASON JOLLS

How many retirement plans and accounts do you currently have? Are you sure? It’s easy to lose track, especially if you have changed jobs or opened IRAs in tax seasons only to have forgotten about them later. Knowing the location and value of your retirement assets is an important part of retirement planning. To simplify your efforts, consider consolidating those assets with IRA rollovers. KEY ADVANTAGES You may use the IRA rollover option to move funds from a qualified retirement plan or traditional IRA to another traditional IRA or from one Roth IRA to another Roth IRA, with no current tax consequences. Consolidating your accounts makes it easier to keep track of retirement balances, contributions and investment performance. You’ll receive fewer statements for easier record keeping and possibly pay less in annual account fees. With your assets pooled together, you may adjust your investment strategy more easily. And consolidation streamlines the process of making your required minimum distributions during retirement.

MONEY MATTER$ PUT A ROLLOVER IN MOTION To track down your retirement assets, review your tax records and contact previous employers. For information about IRA rollovers contact us. We can help you put the IRA rollover wheels in motion and assist you with other retirement planning needs. Earnings on Roth IRA withdrawals may be subject to state and local income taxes; they may be subject to federal income taxes if taken before five years of participation. Qualified retirement plan and traditional IRA withdrawals generally are subject to ordinary income taxes. Withdrawals from a qualified retirement plan, traditional IRA or Roth IRA prior to age 59 1/2 may be subject to a 10 percent federal tax penalty. Certain exceptions apply. Required minimum distributions from traditional IRAs generally must begin by April 1 of the year after you reach age 70 1/2, and from qualified retirement plans by that date or by April 1 of the year after you retire, if later. Short Sale: What is it? Do I have that option? BY DANIA S. FERNANDEZ, ESQ. Attorney at Law

Many homeowners are in distress with their mortgages. Dealing with a foreclosure and/or negotiating a loan modification is a common situation throughout South Florida. A short sale may be a viable option for those who have had enough and want to simply move on.

Here is basic and useful information regarding short sales: 1. What is a short sale? A short sale is an alternative to foreclosure where the lender/bank agrees to accept a sale price on your property that is less than what is owe on the loan. If you want to sell your home and you have no equity and owe more than it is worth, it will need to be through a short sale process. 2. When should I consider a short sale? This depends on your particular situation. If you wish you could just walk away from your house, then a short sale is appropriate. If what you need is more time, whether to find a better job or save money, then wait and do not sell your house yet. Many homeowners unable to pay their mortgage believe that they need to leave their home immediately. Keep in mind that once you leave your home you will either be living with someone else or you will have to rent. Do not forget that to rent you will probably have to pay first and last months’ rent plus a security deposit. A better plan is often to stay in your home and try to work out a loan modification as you simultaneously defend your foreclosure. Only you can decide if you want to fight for the home you have worked so hard for. 3. Where do I find buyers for a short sale? A common problem with short sales is finding a buyer. You need a Realtor who is knowledgeable about short sales and can market your home

to quickly find a buyer. Most attorneys work with a Realtor who is well-versed in the short sale process. Contact your attorney and get a referral for a Realtor. It will make a huge difference. 4. Do I need an attorney? An attorney will negotiate the short sale transaction. A short sale is processed much like a loan modification. The attorney will prepare all documentation and negotiate a deal with the lender/bank. In addition, you need to make certain the lender/bank waives its right to a deficiency judgment against you. A deficiency judgment is when the lender/bank pursues its right to come after you for the difference of what they agreed to allow the home to be sold for and what you owed to them. 5. What will I have to pay? The Realtor’s commissions are paid at closing by the lender/bank. An attorney may have an initial processing fee and may negotiate their fees with the lender/bank. In every short sale, time is a major factor; therefore it is best that the process be handled by an experienced professional. If a short sale is not processed correctly it could take longer to get an approval and eventually you may lose the potential buyer. There is a timeline for every alternative and every homeowner should be clear as to what step to take first. Whether it is a loan modification, foreclosure defense, short sale, deed in lieu of foreclosure or bankruptcy, each alternative is going to be specific to your individual case. Don’t be a homeowner who abandons their home prematurely! There are many viable alternatives. My initial consultation is free and many attorneys do the same. Write down all the questions you may have, get clear answers and start sleeping at night.

Overweight children can carry a lot more than extra pounds into adulthood BY MARLON BAILEY, AFTA The problem of overweight children in the United States has grown considerably in recent years. A child is actually considered to be obese if they are more than 30 percent over their ideal weight. This means that if your child should weigh 40 pounds and they weigh 52 pounds, they are medically “obese.” What you might see as “baby fat” or just a “growing stage,” can actually be the beginning of life-long difficulties for your child. Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise. Child and adolescent obesity is also associated with increased risk of emotional problems. Teens with weight problems tend to have much lower self-esteem and be less popular with their peers. Depression, anxiety, and obsessive compulsive disorder can also occur. A few extra pounds do not suggest obesity. However, they may indicate a tendency to gain weight easily and a need for changes in diet and/or exercise. Obesity most commonly begins in childhood between the ages of 5 and 6, and during

adolescence. Studies have shown that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obese adult. In the absence of a physical disorder, the only way to lose weight is to reduce the number of calories being eaten and/or to increase the child's or adolescent's level of physical activity. Since obesity often affects more than one family member, making healthy eating and regular exercise a family activity can improve the chances of successful weight control for the child or adolescent. There are very few facilities that offer kids and family programs. Please visit our website to see our programs and prices. Lasting weight loss can only occur when there is self-motivation. That is what we are for! At Precision Personal Training, we will show you that losing weight is a real possibility—that you can do it! Contact Precision Personal Training for a complimentary family evaluation and plan of action. 305-270-7333 www.precisionpersonaltraining.com

QUICK TIP: Continued weight gain means that a child is getting more calories than they need. Cut back on oversized portions, extra snacks, high calorie foods/fast food, or drinking too many calories in the form of juice, soda.

2010 Terrain is GMC’s all-new crossover SUV Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The all-new 2010 GMC Terrain has a lot to get excited about. It’s a five-passenger crossover SUV with distinctive styling, and some new technology to deliver better gas mileage. The Terrain rides on a 112.5-inch wheelbase and has a four-wheel independent suspension system, with wide front and rear tracks for a better ride and handling. A new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection powers the Terrain and it gets an impressive 32 mpg on the highway. Maximum fuel economy is achieved in part with an “eco” mode activated by pressing a button on the console. A 3.0-liter DOHC 264 hp direct-injected V-6 engine is another option. Both engines are mated to sixspeed automatic transmissions and frontwheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models are offered in SLE and SLT trim levels. The Terrain is easy on the eyes with a balanced, athletic stance. It has angular sur-

faces and muscular fender flares, with a strong front-end characterized by squaredoff edges and a three-element grille accented by a chrome surround and projectorbeam headlamps mounted in large, rectangular housings. On the inside, the Terrain interior is comfortable and luxurious, with contrasting stitching and materials that create a quality look throughout the cabin. A floating center stack is highlighted by ambient lighting and houses the comfort and convenience controls. The Terrain also has an abundance of storage space, with numerous compartments suitable for a variety of items, including an oversized glove box, a closed storage area in the instrument panel above the center stack, another under the center armrest that is large enough for a laptop computer and two-tier storage in the doors. The seats are comfortable and the standard MultiFlex sliding rear seat can be moved fore or aft almost eight inches for more passenger comfort or greater rear cargo capacity. The 60/40-split rear seatback offers additional configurations for passengers and cargo. There also are four auxiliary power outlets in the rear cargo area. The Terrain comes with a lengthy list of

Q. My parents are in their mid 80’s. Mom is starting to exhibit early signs of dementia and dad is overwhelmed dealing with the added responsibilities of her care. My siblings and I recently started researching communities. As an educator, I strongly believe in the “use it or lose it” theory and want to be sure both parents will be actively engaged. How are senior living communities keeping residents’ brains active? A. Research continues to support the “use it or lose” it theory. As you know, the key to successful aging is remaining active; therefore, it’s essential for seniors to be in an environment that encourages intellectual, recreational, social and cultural pursuits. At The Palace communities, we continually seek out activities which keep residents engaged, active and mentally stimulated. Our newly launched Art Without Boundaries program uses MnemeTherapy™ which combines singing, movement, painting and story telling to stimulate positive changes in the brain. It has been successfully used for individuals with variety of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s as well as stroke victims. Named after the Greek goddess of memory, MnemeTherapy involves a personalized half hour session with Certified Mneme Therapist April Atlas, who heads the Miami-Dade chapter of the Art Without Boundaries Foundation, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization. Each session begins with a song to help the resident relax. This also engages both sides of the brain: the right side is the intuitive, creative side where music comes from and the brain’s left side is the logical, sequential center providing language. After a brief assessment, the resident reviews samples and selects a painting he or she would like to recreate. According to Atlas, MnemeTherapy is neither an art lesson nor traditional art therapy. Residents choose what they like— she simply provides a step-by-step guide. She uses singing, movement, patterning, painting, story telling and praise to help stimulate sustained attentive focus and produce an amazing painting. The sessions often evoke memories for residents. For example, Leticia Villasanez, a resident at The Palace Royale, recalled her days in Cuba by naming her artwork “Beautiful Palm Tree in Cuba”. Once the painting is completed and named, residents develop a short story. In doing so, an old memory is now linked to a positive event. The artist and their work are then introduced to an audience, who provides positive feedback. This praise, says Atlas, increases dopamine levels in the brain, key

to alleviating some of the mood and emotional balance issues affecting Alzheimer’s patients. Our resident, Roxanne Manos, was a bit apprehensive because she had no experience; however, her hesitation was quickly replaced by excitement once her painting “Beauty of Nature” neared completion. “MnemeTherapy extends well beyond the half hour sessions,” said Atlas. “There’s a sense of pride and accomplishment as residents show off their creations to family and friends. One family was so excited about the painting that they took it home and framed it.” In addition to embracing activities for residents with dementia-related illnesses, we believe it’s important to provide programming that stimulates the brain prior to the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related disorders. Our recent partnership with University of Miami’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute brings adult education courses to Palace residents as well as Kendall’s older adults. The spring session kicks off on January 5th and will explore western art and the political, economical and cultural contest in which it was created. The Palace communities have also introduced the Nintendo Wii gaming system, much to residents’ delight. Wii games such as Family Feud and The Price is Right are especially popular and help stimulate residents’ minds. Wii bowling and golf have also grown in popularity and have a fostered a spirit of camaraderie among Palace residents. I encourage you to meet with the community’s activity director and review the activity calendar to learn if there’s a good mix of educational and recreational programs. Although the staff at innovative senior living communities such as The Palace understands there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, they support the research that states the onset of dementia symptoms can be delayed by keeping mentally active and plan the community’s activities accordingly. If you have questions about the lifestyle changes that go with aging, or if you’d like to be invited to a social event at The Palace Suites, please send a note to Helen Shaham, The Palace Suites, 11377 S.W. 84th St., Miami, Florida 33173, call her at 305-2707020, or email helen@thepalace.org.

International fitness and nutrition expert Bill Cortright is launching a series of free health and wellness workshops at Gardner’s Market, 8287 SW 124th Street, that focus on managing stress and achieving good health at any age. Cortright, a Pinecrest resident, is the creator of Biofit — <www.biofit.com> new site up by Feb. 18 — a wellness program, and the author of The Stress-Response Diet and Lifestyle Program <www.srdiet.com>. His wellness strategies have been successful in Peru, Panama, Costa Rica and the Philippines. Cortright has also launched successful corporate wellness programs in Panama at HSBC Bank, Banco General, Proctor & Gamble and Cable & Wireless. The free workshops planned for Gardner’s Market will focus on teaching the public how stress affects overall health and how people can manage its effects and achieve overall good health and longevity. “I am one of the success stories,” said Dr. Jorge Hildalgo, director and founder of Juvenica Clinics of Plastic Surgery in Miami and Lima, Peru. “I followed Bill’s plan during the last nine months. It’s not difficult. I look better and feel happier and healthier, and I’m more energetic. In just three months, I gained 10 pounds of muscle mass and lost 14 pounds of fat. I feel like a new me.”

A Staple Restaurant, revered as a FAVORITE amongst the locals. Featuring fine cuisine in a Sophisticated yet approachable setting…

We’ll help you find the perfect arrangement or gift.

............................... “Locals swear by the place, flocking to the attractively bistro-ish dining room for fresh, delicious meals, stellar service and one of the most distinctive wine lists in town.” “The food is exceptional...while Two Chefs certainly deserve the recognition, I like to keep the restaurant as it is...the best kept secret in South Miami!” “Unexpected concoctions are another untraditional tradition at Two Chefs -- perhaps goat meat paired with lobster or an escargot potpie.” “The room is lovely in a warm, curvy, bistroish manner, and the terrifically talented staff will likewise put you at ease -- friendly and loose in demeanor, tightly professional in their work, and knowledgeable about both cuisine and the smartly chosen wine selection... At Two Chefs, this is still a beautiful world.”
