ONE OF MIAMI’S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS
2010 Census forms arriving in March BY GUIDO INGUANZO
Village Clerk, Village of Pinecrest Complete Count Committee
The decennial census is the foundation of fair and equitable representation in the U.S. Congress and is mandated by the U.S. Constitution. The 2010 Census is intended to achieve an accurate assessment of the number and location of people living within the United State’s borders. The results of the census will also determine how communities, like Pinecrest, get their fair share of federal funds over the next decade. Census data is used to determine how many seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are allotted to each state in order to ensure fair representation. The information is used to draw congressional, state and local districts for our elected representatives and helps to maintain the democratic principle of one person, one vote. The 2010 Census questionnaire is one of the shortest forms in history to be used by the Census Bureau. The questionnaire will ask for name, gender, age, race, ethnicity, relationship, and home ownership status. It will take the average household about ten minutes to complete the form. The form will be available in many languages, including Spanish, to ensure that the nation’s increasingly diverse population can answer the questionnaire accurately and completely. The goal is to count everybody, count them only once and count them in the right place. The data compiled as a result of the 2010 Census will directly affect how more than $4 trillion of federal funds is allocated to state and local governments over the next ten years. The statistical information gathered can also shape decisions about public health, capital improvements, transportation, education, senior services, and many other public policy matters. Responses to the 2010 Census questionnaire are required by law. All responses are used for statistical purposes only. Federal law protects the confidentiality of the data collected by the Census Bureau. The forms will begin arriving in your mailbox during March. Please take a few minutes to complete the form and return it to the Census Bureau. It’s in our hands, Pinecrest! Go to <www.pinecrest-fl.gov> or <www.2010census.gov> for more information.

Keeping crime in check in Miami-Dade County Mayor, Miami-Dade County
BY CARLOS ALVAREZ
The 2009 numbers are in and violent and non-violent crimes in unincorporated Miami-Dade are at their lowest levels in five years. Nearly every area tracked revealed decreases, including robberies and motor vehicle thefts. The drop is in line with national trends, but it’s also the result of long-term, comprehensive efforts to fight crime through targeted enforcement, community engagement and interagency cooperation. To the men and women of the Miami-Dade Police Department, thank you for your hard work, dedication and determination to keep our neighborhoods safe.

Like all county departments, the police department is adapting to today’s economic realities. Administration and overtime are being reduced, and reorganizations are occurring, but not a single police officer, firefighter or corrections officer has been laid-off in Miami-Dade County. That’s something of which we can all be proud. The reasons for the reduction in crime extend beyond the police department. Our Juvenile Services Department is intervening in the lives of at-risk young people
before it’s too late. Our Homeless Trust is preventing homelessness, reducing our homeless population to its lowest level ever. Miami-Dade County’s Drug Court Program is successfully treating substance abusers and keeping them out of jail. All of these programs are considered national models. All of these things are investments in our community. They improve our quality of life, and they contribute to our well-being. The bottom line is that public safety is intact in Miami-Dade County. Public safety remains a priority. All residents and visitors value public safety, and Miami-Dade County is delivering.

STEPHEN LICHTNER Swimming is a huge part of Stephen Lichtner’s life. Lichtner is a member of the Palmetto High School swim team that took the state championship in November. He continues to swim because he’s going to the University of Florida on a swimming scholarship and he hopes to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic Swim Team. Through this summer, Lichtner is swimming for the Metro Aquatic Club of Miami, MAC, which practices at Tamiami Pool. He’s in the water almost every day, even during those 10 days of super cold weather which was made worse when the outdoor pool’s heater went on the fritz. “It was horrible,” Lichtner says. “We kind of kept swimming constantly so we would never have to sit and wait in the cold air.” He’s following in the family tradition. “My dad swam at UM (72-76 scholarship),” Lichtner says. “He placed in NCAAs. My mom swam and my sister swam before me.” Like any successful athlete, Lichtner has big goals. “For international swimming, the Olympics, that’s definitely my goal,” he says. “For college swimming, to win a team NCAA Championship or to get an NCAA championship individually. That would be awesome.” Before choosing Florida, Lichtner talked to several schools.
“You talk to coaches and go on recruiting trips and you go to the school and decide which one you want to go to,” he says, adding that it was a difficult decision. He narrowed down the choices to three schools and then picked one – Florida. “I know they are in the top 10 every year; they do really well,” he says. “They have Olympians on their teams and they have had NCAA champions. It’s going to be really cool to train against them.” Florida will get not only a top athlete but a top student. Lichtner is in the top 10 percent of his class and he received the Scholastic All American Award as a sophomore. He is on track to receive it again this year. Given out by U.S.A. Swimming, the award honors swimmers who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above and who have All American times in swimming. Even with the demands of being a championship swimmer, Lichtner takes Advanced Placement classes. In his junior year, he took three AP classes. This year, he’s taking just one, but it’s a high-level math class. “Last year was a tough year and it was great year in both swimming and school,” he says. “This summer at the U.S. Opens and Junior Nationals I did really well. I did best times in everything. If the Olympics were this year, then I qualified for the trials. I did really well in the 50 Free, the 100 Free and the 100 Fly.” He also swims the 200 and 400 Freestyle relay. After a great junior season and incredible summer, he didn’t have as great a fall swimming season as he would have liked. But he’s happy that he did contribute enough to help the team win it all. Lichtner has tried to make time for community service as well as swimming and school. He’s been involved in SOS, a coed service organization. He’s also worked numerous swim meets for kids at the Tamiami Pool. “I help organize them and time them,” he says. “It’s important to keep swimming going for little kids.” While working the meets, he talks to the kids and tries to keep them interested in swimming as a sport. Lichtner also has been a member of Mu Alpha Theta and the National Honor Society. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld
BRANDON QUINTANA Perfect attendance in a single academic year is an outstanding achievement for any student, but it’s absolutely amazing when a student achieves it for their entire school career. Palmetto High senior Brandon Quintana is on track to graduate in June without ever missing a day of school. “Hopefully at the end of this year I’ll have my 13th year of consecutive perfect attendance,” he says. “I stay pretty healthy. If I get a cold, I still go. Luckily I never had anything that has kept me from going.” When he graduates, he will have a wall filled with honors. Along with the award given for perfect attendance, Quintana is expected to receive the Presidential Bronze Medal for Community Service. He has more than 900 volunteer hours, which is another huge achievement when you consider how much time is taken up by conditioning, practices and meets when a student is also an athlete. Quintana is wrestler and a member of the Palmetto Cross Country team. His interest in the medical field led him to volunteer at the Baptist Hospital Country Walk Urgent Care Center. He is there almost every Sunday for a four-hour shift. “I wanted to get some type of community service at a hospital and Baptist outpatient services puts you where they need you,” he says. “We do the little things. We put the wrist bands on the patients that come in. We’ll bring papers back there
from the front desk to the doctors. We’ll put patient labels on the folders.” While his volunteer work might not be classified as exciting since it’s primarily clerical, it did teach him something. “It showed me what I really wanted,” he says. “Just because you’re working in a hospital doesn’t mean that you see a lot of injured people. I want to be on the front line.” As of now, he’s still undecided in terms of his major and his college. He’s already been accepted to Florida State University. He also applied to Tulane and the University of Florida. “I’m leaning toward being a pharmacist, but being a surgeon was pretty interesting to me,” he says. Quintana has not limited his learning to the classroom or the hospital. He learned about becoming a better person and athlete as a member of the Palmetto wrestling team. While most kids start in sports in elementary or middle school, he didn’t begin wrestling until he was in the 10th grade. He credits the wrestling coach for pushing him to succeed and says the Palmetto team gets into high gear at a time when most other coaches allow the kids to slack off. “Last year, out of 14 kids we had five qualify for the state tournament. One of them, a sophomore, placed sixth. This year — I don’t want to jinx us — I think we’re going to have seven or eight; we have a young team, with five freshmen in the lineup.” Even though this is his first year on the varsity, Quintana, a heavyweight, is a team captain. And when he’s not busy with wrestling practices and meets, he goes to Palmetto Middle School to volunteer with the wrestling program. He also earns community service time by working at the Homestead Speedway a couple of weekends a year, which raises money for the wrestling program. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

TORI COHEN Since her freshman year, Palmetto High School junior Tori Cohen has been volunteering with Friendship Circle, an organization based at the Chabad of Kendall.
Students working with Friendship Circle help children and families with disabilities by taking time to play with the affected children each week. Last year, Cohen would meet with the child or children she was assigned to at the Chabad on 112th Street and Galloway Road. This year she goes to the child’s house. “We play with him, we give the mom a break,” Cohen says. “We hang out and do puzzles.” Being around the special needs children has taught Cohen much about children with disabilities. “They are like normal children,” she says. “I was very nervous when I first started. I learned they are not that different from us.” While Cohen has garnered many service hours from her time with Friendship Circle, she isn’t limiting her community service to the one organization. She put together an event called “Yoga for a Cure” last May which raised almost $4,000 for breast cancer research. “I did it in honor of my mom who is a breast cancer survivor,” Cohen says. “We did it for the Memorial Hospital Breast Cancer Center.” The event raised money when people
donated $36 or more to take a special yoga class. That first yoga class drew about 40 people. Cohen says the event was successful enough that they plan to make it an annual event, with the next one scheduled for March 6. “The yoga community is philanthropic and loves donating,” she says. Along with the donations to attend the class, Cohen says they secured donations from other places. Cohen credits yoga with helping her mom through her battle with cancer. “She’s been a survivor for 10 years,” she says. One of the constants through much of Cohen’s life is her involvement in the Girl Scouts, an association that began when she was in kindergarten. Cohen earned the Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can get, equal to the Eagle rank for Boy Scouts. Cohen also worked out a deal for the Suniland Offerdahl’s to give their surplus baked goods to Camillus House, resulting in the donation of about 50 bagels a week With Cohen’s help, the charity driver from the Camillus House goes by once a week to pick up the surplus goods. While that sounds
like a simple endeavor, it took a tremendous amount of work to put the two groups together. She also followed up to make sure the pick-ups were taking place. “I started earlier than I was supposed to and I had to pause it and start it again,” she says. At Palmetto, she is the secretary of communications for the Student Council. In that position, she goes to PTSA meetings. “I’m supposed to be a liaison between the two,” she says. Cohen is also in charge of a program called Mix-It-Up, which promotes social diversity and tolerance. She says it’s a way for students who socialize in different circles to meet each other. Cohen’s other extracurricular activities include the National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society and the Palmetto varsity tennis team, which means she accomplished one of her goals for the year. Cohen also plays the piano. She is an excellent student, and has been honored for her leadership qualities with the Mark Light Award for Service by Temple Beth Am.

Pictured are Gulliver students with artist Tony Mendoza and their four “art smart” panels. More than 40 Gulliver students from the South Miami campus partnered with Mendoza to create the paintings. Each year, Gulliver highlights multiple intelligences and this year the focus was art smart. Students worked on the concept with their teachers and decided to paint a mural with each canvas highlighting a different area of intelligence. The five-painting piece is titled All the Ways We Are Smart. “This year’s Art Smart Experience provided many opportunities for our students to learn about the process of creating a work of art while exploring their own artistic intelligence,” said Principal Stephanie Jackson.

High school students help ‘bring joy’ to homeless BY GARY ALAN RUSE
Young athletes from five different high schools — Coral Reef, Ferguson, Palmetto, South Ridge and Sunset — formed an organization called “People Bringing Joy” to help those in need. On Christmas morning, while most other teenagers were sleeping in or opening presents with their families and friends, the students were instead on the road, giving out free lunches to the homeless. First, Samantha Capperelli and Dakota Bernal organized their friends and family. They got together a week before Christmas to start the lunch bags, decorated and filled them with the non-perishable items donated by the group. On Christmas morning they came together again to make the sandwiches — peanut butter and jelly — the other meaning of the group’s initials (PBJ). Then the teens boarded a truck and headed toward Homestead, pausing along the way to distribute to homeless individuals a lunch bag, bottled water and a Merry Christmas wish. Ana DePriest, Dakota Bernal’s mother, thought it made a difference. “It wasn’t a lot, just a meal and clean water, but the patrons were so very thank-

ful,” DePriest said. “These athletes don’t have the normal time to earn their required service hours and they saw a need, so they organized themselves and created People Bringing Joy.”
Capparelli is a senior at Coral Reef High School, a four-time All-Dade Water Polo participant and a Silver Knight nominee for 2010. She thought it just seemed like the right thing to do.
“That’s the true spirit of Christmas,” Capperelli said. Bernal, a second year starter and high scorer in soccer at Palmetto High, also was feeling the holiday spirit. “Giving to those in need is always more fun, and the joy we see in the people’s faces makes waking up early worth it,” she said. Also participating in the PBJ “lunch run” were: Joey Capparelli, a graduate of and fouryear varsity player baseball at Miami Sunset High, and a Silver Knight nominee in 2009; Jonathon Silva, a senior at Ferguson High on the baseball team; Gabriella Ledbetter, on the second year varsity soccer team at Palmetto; Daniel Ledbetter, a freshman and junior varsity baseball player at Palmetto; Haily Johnson, a junior at South Ridge High on the third year varsity soccer team; Erin Griffin, on the soccer team at Palmetto, and Hannah Caskey, an eighth grade home schooled student. Getting the group organized and making the run was a special holiday event, but the teens intend to continue doing “good deeds” in the future as well.

Apricot Lane comes to The Falls FROM ROBIN’S DESK ––––––––––––––––––––– BY ROBIN KORTH –––––––––––––––––– Olga Mikhailova will host a grand opening for Miami’s first Apricot Lane in The Falls shopping center. A women’s “fashion-forward” boutique, Apricot Lane was chosen as a top 500 franchise by Entrepreneur Magazine in 2009. The store offers affordable fashion jewelry, handbags, accessories and branded apparel, as well as gifts in the style and trends that women and teens are looking for.
Olga Mikhailova outside of Apricot Lane
For franchise-owner Mikhailova, opening Apricot Lane is the realization of a long-held dream. “I was born in Russia and raised in Italy where women’s design fashions and style became part of my life,” she said. “Early on, I was a model in a fashion shop and have always wanted to own my own boutique. Apricot Lane is the perfect vehicle for me.” Mikhailova is not a newcomer to the franchise industry. “For 11 years I operated five MacDonald’s in Italy,” she said. “So purchasing a franchise to launch a fashion boutique was a natural way to go. Apricot Lane gives me great name recognition and support, but also the individual choice of fashions I want to present to the unique client base here in Miami.” The Apricot Lane location in The Falls is between the movie theaters and Macy’s.
High School has announced the second annual Yoga for a Cure at the Yoga Institute of Miami. All proceeds will go to the Broward Memorial Foundation Breast Cancer Center. “A yoga class for breast cancer research was an idea that I have had since I was in middle school,” she said. “I wanted to do something to honor my mother, a survivor who loves Yoga. I thought it would be so cool, so I decided to put it into action last year. The class was a lot of fun and very successful; we raised $4,000.” The event is also in memory of Stacy Lehrman Hart, a daughter of an instructor at the institute who passed away last year. “Both Stacy and my mom went to Broward Memorial Hospital Breast Cancer Center, so I thought it would be very fitting to send the donations there,” said Cohen. Bobbi Goldin, certified Iyengar Yoga instructor, assisted by Barbra Lehrman and Diane Beverly, will be teaching the class. All levels are welcome, and no previous Yoga experience is needed. So save the date and help reach for a cure through Yoga. The Yoga Institute is located right here in Pinecrest at 8241 SW 124 St. The class runs from 4-6 p.m. It is necessary for you to register for this event, so call 305-401-0826 or email <qt108@bellsouth.net>. A donation of $36 or more is requested to attend, but all donations are appreciated (even if you cannot attend).

Dade Heritage Trust will host boat tours up the Coral Gables Waterways during Dade Heritage Days March and April. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY BECKY ROPER MATKOV
Have you ever wondered how those scenic waterways in Coral Gables got there? Are they natural streams or manmade canals? Freshwater or tidal? Where are the manatees’ favorite haunts? How old is the limestone ridge along the banks? What are the architectural styles of the bridges? All these questions and more will be answered on boat tours during Dade Heritage Days, the celebration of Miami’s historic places that the nonprofit Dade Heritage Trust presents to the community during March and April. For the first time ever, the public is offered a chance to enjoy a boat ride up the Coral Gables Waterways with experts in history, architecture, geology and marine life. Thanks to Dade Heritage Trust, the Waterway Renaissance Project, ShakeA-Leg and the Ocean Research & Education Foundation, a distinguished team of guides has been assembled to share knowledge and colorful stories.
Included are historian Arva Moore Parks, architect Bruce Brockhouse, marine scientist Bob Ginsburg, and environmentalist Dick Pettigrew. Spearheading the tour is resident Peter Hairston, founder of the Waterway Renaissance Project, a campaign to enhance the bridges, banks and enjoyment of the Coral Gables Waterways. The boat tours will be given on Sunday, March 7, at 10 a.m., and on Saturday, April 10, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., leaving from 200 Edgewater Drive. Cost is $35 for members of Dade Heritage Trust and the sponsoring organizations, and $45 for nonmembers. Space is limited; advance paid reservations are essential; call DHT at 305-358-9572. For a complete listing of the 70 tours and special events of Dade Heritage Days throughout the community, go to <www.dadeheritagetrust.org> or call Dade Heritage Trust at 305-358-9572 for a brochure. Becky Roper Matkov is president/CEO of Dade Heritage Trust, Miami’s largest nonprofit historic preservation organization, which has worked since 1972 to save Miami’s historic places.

YMCA program teaches kids how to play golf BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
The South Dade YMCA has a program to teach youngsters how to play golf. It was started by Frank Geller, his sister Ledah Geller and Mike Ford, the golf pro at the Palmetto Bay Golf Course and coach at Palmer Trinity School. “Golf has really done a lot for me,” Frank Geller says. “I wanted to teach it to other kids.” Geller says there are things kids can learn from golf that will also help them in life. “In golf, like in life, you have to be patient,” he says, adding that the things he’s learned through golf have helped not only in sports, but in school and life in general. Ford says the program was started to provide young kids with a sport they can have with them the rest of their lives. “Golf is a fast growing sport,” Ford says. “You don’t need to put together six friends to play. It’s a sport you can participate in into your 80s.” The program is geared to teach children
as young as five and as old as 16. A pilot program began last year and attracted more than 10 children, most never exposed to the game before. “We have three different stations set up for them for beginning golf. Putting, chipping station, full swing,” he says. “It will be on Fridays from 5-6 pm. The program runs six weeks at a time. We stay on the same schedule as the rest of the programs. Once a week for an hour on Fridays.” The next session begins March 5. The students are asked to pre-register. Ford says they need to register by the Wednesday of the week they want to participate. While Ford runs the program, the students on the Palmer golf team work as counselors. Both Gellers have taught sessions in return for community service hours. “It’s a lot of fun,” Ledah Geller says. She’s been playing golf for three years and loves it. She plays on the Palmer team with her brother. Palmer does not have a girls’ team. She hopes more girls come out to learn the game.
Students of last year’s pilot golf program at the South Dade YMCA. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
“We really need it in the sport,” she says. The initial golf session last year drew eight kids. Ford is hoping for 15-20 students this time around. The lessons are available to children from age five to 16. In addition to lessons on how to putt, chip and swing, Ford says they are working
with the Palmetto Golf Course on a joint promotion that would allow the kids to play golf at the Briar Bay Golf Course. Another plus, Ford says, is that the YMCA does have some money for scholarships for kids who need help. For information, call 305-254-0310 or go to <www.SouthDadeY@ymcamiami.org>.

2010 American fine Competition Dear reader,
2010 Competition Results
I have had the opportunity to be part of one of, the finest judging panels in the country serving “The American Fine Wine Competition”.
CATEGORIES SP —— Sparkling Wine RI —— Riesling SB —— Sauvignon Blanc CH —— Chardonnay PG —— Pinot Gris/Grigio
The Competition which took place this year on January 17 & 18 is devoted solely to the finest wines produced in the United States. Wines are entered only through invitation. A wine must, without a special exception, meet a certain retail price threshold to be considered for Judging, thereby assuring it is truly a “fine wine”.
AWARDS BOS —— Best of Show
Medal
Finally, in order to earn a medal, 75% of the judges must agree on the award, the highest possible majority. This means that a medal – any medal – from the American Fine Wine Competition is hard earned and well deserved. Note: In order to be eligible for a Best of Class or Best of Show award, a wine must have earned a double gold, meaning a unanimous panel must have voted in that manner. Loan modification, foreclosure, short sale or bankruptcy? What should I do? BY DANIA S. FERNANDEZ, ESQ., Attorney at Law I am asked this question everyday. Not everyone is going to have the same alternatives. However, understanding your options is the first step to saving your home and your sanity.

Iss a Loan Modification n for me? The Making Homes Affordable Plan is President Obama’s loan modification plan that helps homeowners who are struggling to make their monthly mortgage payment stay in their homes. This plan requires lenders to reduce monthly payments to no more than 31 percent of the homeowner’s monthly income. The first step in this plan is to lower the interest rate of the loan—sometimes as low as 2%. Second, if the mortgage payment is still too high with the reduced interest, then the loan may be extended to a 40 year term. Third, if the monthly payment is still not affordable, then there may be a reduction of the principal of the loan. Is a loan modification what you need? It is if you want to keep your home. I see loan modifications being given every day, allowing homeowners to stay in the home they have worked so hard to keep. ed to de efen nd my foreclo Whyy do I nee sure with an attor ney? Once you are given a complaint to foreclose, take that complaint to an attorney so legal responses can be given to the complaint. The response should be specific to each point/count made in the complaint; and affirmative defenses should be formulated for your individual case. The attorney you hire should know foreclosure law, mortgage law and how to properly prepare and answer the foreclosure complaint. If you fail to answer appropriately you risk your right to bring any affirmative defenses against the lender. Do you need to defend against a foreclosure? If you want to save your home and your credit, the answer is yes. Even if you are working on a loan modification, are in the middle of a short sale,
or simply want to avoid foreclosure on your credit you must take legal action to prevent the foreclosure process. Should d I agrree to a short sale e and le eave my home? If you want to throw the towel in or you do not qualify for a loan modification, then a short sale is a good option. A short sale is when a lender accepts less than what you owe on the property and agrees to the sale of your home. With a short sale, you need to find a realtor experienced in short sales; and an attorney who can properly negotiate the short sale with your lender. The short-sale process is similar to a loan modification and must be properly executed so as not to delay the closing and ultimately lose the interested buyer. d I file Bankrr upttcy? If so,, wh hen Should and which Chapter should I file? Bankruptcy is a perfectly legitimate way to stop foreclosure, put an end to lawsuits, protect paychecks from garnishment, and regain control of your financial situation. However, this should be your final option after having tried reaching a loan modification, you have defended your foreclosure with a real estate attorney and time is ticking towards the foreclosure sale date of your house. In the Chapter 7 Bankruptcy there is no loan modification option and if you stop paying your mortgage you could lose your home. In the Chapter 13 Bankruptcy you can save your house and you are given time to pay off your debt. Do not lose hope. Changes and new programs are being offered to help homeowners every day. Even though this is a time of great challenge, do not forget the true meaning of life—the love of your family, the beautiful children you may have and the beautiful place you live in. Fight for what you want, exercise, regularly, read happy books, and watch the program Funniest Home Videos. Soon you’ll be smiling again!

Infiniti M is a luxury sedan with style and performance Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Infiniti M sedan is in the fifth year of its second-generation design and it continues as an outstanding example of a mid-size premium sedan. The Infiniti M emphasizes performance and user-focused technology, and offers a wide selection of engine, driveline and equipment choices. There’s also a spacious cabin wrapped in a sporty exterior, coupled with a marvelous driving experience. The 2010 Infiniti M is available in M35 and M45 models, each offered in rear-wheel drive or with Infiniti’s advanced Intelligent AllWheel Drive system. The Infiniti M45 and M45x AWD come with a 325-hp 4.5-liter V8, while the M35 and M35x AWD are powered by a 303-hp 3.5-liter V-6 (17/25 mpg). A special Sport Package (rear-wheel drive models only) adds a higher level of performance, with an advanced Rear Active Steer system, sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch wheels and tires, and unique body treatments. Every 2010 Infiniti M utilizes an enhanced
next-generation FM (Front Mid-ship) platform also used on the sibling G37 Sedan, G37 Coupe, EX35 and FX premium crossover SUV. The refined FM platform positions the engine behind the front axle for an optimized front-to-rear weight balance, which factors in weight transfer during driving maneuvers. The Infiniti M really is a nice blend of luxury and sport styling, with an expressive grille and crystal-look headlight clusters, large aluminum-alloy wheels, low profile tires, and a stable, wide-track posture for a dynamic look. The M’s low hoodline flows into anchored shoulders and a fluid roofline, contributing to the sporty silhouette. Infiniti M models equipped with the optional Sport Package also have unique front and rear bumpers, headlight color, side sills and 19inch wheels and tires. The Infiniti M’s long wheelbase and short overhangs allow for a roomy interior and sporty exterior dimensions. Wide front and rear tracks add to handling stability, while the overall width enhances interior and trunk space. The M also has lightweight body components, including aluminum-alloy inner and outer door panels, hood and decklid panels. Inside, the interior design combines a driver-oriented cockpit with luxury and detail. The instrument panel has “Fine Vision” elec-

Stretch your power dollar with dimmer switches BY KENT CROOK
President, Wiremasters Electric “Turn off the lights when you leave” is a phrase your parents probably used quite often in their attempts to trim the monthly electric bill. Today’s modern technology lets the lights turn themselves off or reduce the lighting level from very bright to dim. The typical commercial building, about 50,000 square feet in area, spends about $45,000 a year on lighting energy. My source is The New Thinking About Lighting published in Building Operating Management in August 2008. Lighting controls are the key to keeping your commercial property’s power bill under control. Benefits to you as a property owner include: • Lower operating costs. • More flexible space because of lighting and shading zones created without rewiring. • Increased productivity and comfort for employees. • Ability of employees to create preferred light levels and automated shade control. • When the proper equip.m.ent is installed, you have what seems like unlimited possibilities for controlling the lighting in your offices. • Lights turn on when someone enters a room and turn off when the room is vacant. • The shades covering the windows are opened or closed according to outside conditions, so that energy consumption is reduced. • When lights are dimmed and shades are automatically controlled, there is reduced need for lighting and reduced load on the HVAC system. • Lights can be scheduled as to when to turn on and when to turn off. • Employees can set the preferred light level for different tasks. Because 90 percent of information is received visually, it is important for the employee to have the right a.m.ount of light for the task at hand. • If the needs of a certain office space
WIREMASTER change, it is possible to use wall controls, occupancy sensors and daylight sensors for reassigning settings to different fixtures. Let’s take a day in the life of an office, to show how technology adjusts the needs for lighting: 7 to 8 a.m.: The security staff and facility staff enter the building. Shades open to let in daylight. Occupancy sensors turn on lights to 50 percent to save energy. If more light is needed, adjustments can be made at a wallstation. 9 to 11 a.m.: Office workers arrive, so lights are automatically set at 80 percent light output. Daylight sensors reduce electric light levels to respond to available daylight. Lunch: Lights automatically dim down to 10 percent as workers leave for lunch. 2 p.m.: Workers have returned by now so lights automatically rise to higher levels as daylight decreases. 3 to 4 p.m.: Workers dim their lights and adjust shades with hand-held remotes so they can clearly view their computer screens and have enough light to take notes during a webinar. 5 p.m.: Workers leave, so lights automatically dim down to 10 percent. Control devices can override this setting if additional light is needed. 6 p.m.: Cleaning crew arrives, so lights automatically turn on to 80 percent for the janitorial staff. After hours: The time clock automatically turns the lights off and lowers shades to save energy. This also minimizes light pollution. The benefits of a lighting control strategy go on and on. And one of the most satisfying benefits is that reduced amount of money spent each month for electricity. Kent Crook is president of Wiremasters Electric. Contact him at 305-385-9379 or via email at <kent@kcmia.m.i.com>.

Time Is Money: Deciding When to Take Social Security BY JASON JOLLS

One of the few things you can control about Social Security is when to start collecting it. Should you take it when you become eligible at age 62, wait until “normal” retirement age (a function of your birth date) or consider delaying your benefits past normal retirement age? To help you make this decision, consider that, on average, Americans are living longer than ever before. Clearly, the longer you expect to live, the more sense it makes to delay taking Social Security. But of course, each person’s circumstances and needs are different—here’s a look at how timing can affect the benefits you receive. Early Benefits. The soonest you can collect Social Security is age 62. But taking payments at 62 will result in a permanently reduced benefit, ranging from a 20% reduction for people born in 1937 up to 30% for those born in 1960 or later. You may want to consider early benefits if you need income but prefer to leave your portfolio intact, or if you intend to invest the benefits to try to earn a more competitive return (though there’s no guarantee you will do so). Full Benefits. Eligibility for full Social Security benefits varies according to the year you were born. Depending on how long you worked and how much you earned over your lifetime, the maximum benefit you could collect at normal retirement age (65 years and 10 months) is $2,185 per month in 2008. Consider waiting for full benefits if you plan to work until age 65, if you want to ensure a larger survivor’s benefit for your spouse or if family history and good health may lead to an above-average life expectancy. Refer to the Social Security Web site <http://www.socialsecurity.gov/OACT/quickcalc/when2retire.ht ml> to calculate your “breakeven” age, when the accumulated value of higher benefits from postponing retirement will start to
exceed the value of lower benefits from choosing early retirement. Delayed Benefits. If you continue working beyond your normal retirement age, you will be eligible to collect a permanently increased Social Security benefit when you do retire. Approximately 8% more per year will be added automatically to the permanent benefit amount for every year you wait. Delaying benefits past age 70 will generally add nothing more to your monthly benefit. To help assess your situation, refer to your personalized Social Security Statement, which estimates the monthly Social Security benefits you may qualify for (go to http://www.socialsecurity.gov/mystatement for a copy of your statement). You may also wish to enlist the help of a financial professional to crunch some numbers and determine what sort of timing would best support the retirement you envision. Accepting homosexual teenagers BY COLLEEN WRIGHT
It is something that is rarely discussed in school as the very mention of it may silence a room or even surface a few giggles. Teenagers who are unsure feel secluded and confused, even scared. But for teens who believe they may be gay, some try to closet their true sexual orientation and conform, while other teens bravely show their true colors and often become martyrs of their identity. Sexual orientation is a major factor of being a teenager. The Kinsey Reports by biologist Dr. Alfred Kinsey estimate that one of every 10 teens may be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transsexual. Many people argue it is a choice and a lifestyle while others believe it is a natural occurrence; however, teenagers of both existences deserve equality and fair treatment in today’s world, yet some of today’s teenagers do not respect this dignity. In school, an environment where individuality and freedom of expression are boasted, many students do not feel comfortable about their sexual orientation. Verbal insults and physical harassment target those who are gay, bringing self-esteems to extreme lows. High school is a time to mature, a time for teenagers to find themselves, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that can shape their identity for the rest of their lives. According to the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN), which prevents anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) name-calling, bullying and harassment at schools, the reported grade point average of students who were more frequently harassed because of their sexual orientation or gender expression was almost half a grade lower than for students who were less often harassed: 2.4 as compared to 2.8. Ironically, it is a double standard; students are encouraged to build character and individuality in school, but other students may react harshly to the difference in the norm, making classmates feel inferior and even threatened by their sexual orientation. Hate crimes are committed every day toward gays and often these cruel acts go unpunished. How can a teenager blossom his or her true self when they are taunted every time they walk through the halls? The statistics are quite frightening. GLSEN reports nine out of 10 LGBT students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment. Three-fifths feel unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation and
TEEN TALK more than 30 percent report missing at least one day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety. Ashley is a perfect example of these statistics. As a junior at a local high school, Ashley feels threatened because of coming out as a lesbian. “It’s hard because I get stared at and made fun of all the time,” Ashley said. “People say I’m going to hell for being gay and that God doesn’t accept me. It’s like I’m against the wall and people are throwing stones.” Ashley is strongly rooted in her faith, but feels uncomfortable as others do not accept her sexual orientation. Sometimes this discrimination can take teenagers to the edge. According to the Massachusetts 2006 Youth Risk Survey, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their straight peers. A survey done in 2007 by the San Francisco State University Chavez Center Institute reports that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth who come from a disapproving family are up to nine times more likely to commit suicide than those who are straight. As a society we must respect the individuality of everyone, as everyone is deserving of respect, regardless of sexual orientation. A straight teenager is equal in all aspects to a gay teenager. Both manage pressures with school, friends and parents. With all these stresses already on a young person, why should one have to fear torment because of their sexual preference? We have no reason to show hatred toward those who have a different standard of living. So next time the topic arises in conversation, try your best to hold your tongue from slipping a derogatory slur or releasing a small snicker. As much as you may not think so, there may be someone around who may be questioning his or her sexuality or actually be gay. We are all humans: We laugh, we cry and we die all the same way, and our sexual preference does not merit degradation and shame, let alone physical punishment. Society may deem homosexuality as taboo, but let’s not forget the popular defense of freedom of expression. JCC events feature Tony Orlando, Four Seasons tribute band Linda K. Landy ALPER JCC NEWS How many times have you seen yellow ribbons tied around tree branches in movies, television shows and news reports? You know what they mean: Someone is waiting for a loved one to come home – soldiers, runaways, kidnap victims and more. These days, you’ll find yellow ribbons all over town – tied to trees, affixed to houses, pinned to clothing and streaming from car antennae. Ever wonder where the custom originated? Although the tradition is traced to England four centuries ago, it was not recognized among the general population until the 1970s when Tony Orlando and Dawn released the hit song Tie a Yellow
Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree. In the song, a convict being released from prison requests his lover to “tie a yellow ribbon round the ole oak treeâ€? to indicate that she still wanted him. As the bus drove by their house he could see one hundred yellow ribbons. I wonder if there will be yellow ribbons flying at the Dave and Mary Alper JCC for the Tony Orlando concert on Thursday, March 18, at 8 p.m. Orlando, one of America’s most endearing and enduring stars, has conquered every facet of show business from million selling records (five number one hits), a popular television variety series, movies and Broadway (Barnum and Smokey Joe’s Cafe). In addition to Tie a Yellow Ribbon, the music legend is best known for Knock Three Times, Sweet Gypsy Rose and He Don’t Love You. Orlando has won three American Music Awards, a People’s Choice Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Unexpected Boys have travelled the world with their award-winning tribute to Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons featuring hits like Sherry, Walk like a Man, Let’s Hang On and Big Girls Don’t Cry. The School Matters database offers ratings and reviews directly from the parents, so you can learn from those with experience. One thing you can’t determine online, however, is the actual classroom environment, so you should absolutely schedule a visit to one or more schools in the area before making your decision. Meet with the principal and watch the manner in which teachers and students interact. Once you have an understanding of the distinctions between schools, your choice will become clear. One excellent resource for beginning your research is SchoolMatters.com, an online database of public schools. Begin with statistics that illustrate students’ achievement levels in each school. Milano Bags — turning heads with stylish shoes and bags Monica and Juan Ferreira at work in their new Suniland boutique, Milano Bags.
BY NANCY EAGLETON
Shoe and handbag lovers rejoice! Milano Bags has opened in Suniland Plaza, and this chic boutique carries what’s hot and trendy. The beautiful, handmade shoes and boots, handbags, belts, wallets, key chains, cell phone cases and cosmetic bags are all displayed like works of art throughout the sleek and ultra-hip store. But fear not, these must-have fashion accessory pieces are well-priced. “The products are all handmade from Italian and Peruvian leather, and leather from all around the world,” said store owner Juan Ferreira. “The quality is superior and the styling is unique, but the price is very affordable. It surprises people.” Ferreira and his wife, Monica, opened Milano Bags in early December. This is the company’s first franchise in the U.S. market. Milano Bags is a family owned and operated business based in Peru, with boutiques located throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. They’ve been making fashion leather pieces for 15 years and until now only a few pieces were distributed in the U.S. to boutiques located in such cities as New York, Orlando and Los Angeles. “The company has been so supportive in helping us open this first store in the U.S.,” said Juan Ferreira. “We’ve known the owners for years and we’ve always been so impressed with their stores and products. They watch the trends in Europe and America and their products reflect their attention to detail. We felt that Milano Bags would be well received in this Miami market.” Milano Bags wants to set itself apart from the big retailers, so when it comes to customer service and products, the difference lies in the details. “We are always here in the store serving
our customers,” said Monica Ferriera. “Excellent customer service is our top priority. I learn what the clients want when I talk with them and listen to their reactions and requests. Our next order will reflect what the customers have been asking for.” Some of the pieces at the Ferreiras’ store are exclusive to the Miami market. Monica has partnered with the Milano Bags owners to combine elements such as style, leather colors, hardware and other details to design pieces that are only carried in their store. The company was so impressed with a few of Monica’s models that they are being made and distributed to other Milano Bags stores. “We only order two to three of each handbag style to ensure that a customer’s purchase will be unique to them,” said Monica. “The message here, if you like it, you’d better buy it now.” The handbags’ interiors have a zippered compartment, key holder and cell phone holder. The insoles of the shoes are generously padded for comfort and all products come with a lifetime guarantee against unusual damage or breakage. Product lines like Studs and Stones and Geometry Lessons feature unique details with stitching, straps, buckles, studs and stones. When it comes to trend colors, there are bags and shoes in hues of burnt orange, eggplant, mustard and more. Want basic black, white or brown? Milano Bags has it, but it’s definitely not basic. For birthdays, anniversaries and Mother’s Day in May, Monica is ready to help husbands select the perfect special gift. Milano Bags is located at 11399 S. Dixie Hwy. and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. For updates on new product arrivals and sales, go to Milano Bags on Facebook at <milanobagsusa.com>. Too much Acetaminophen can lead to liver failure BY SONIA MARTINEZ, RPH Acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol™) is one of the most common medications found in households. It is used for the treatment of pain and to lower fever. Over many years, it has been used countless times by many people and it has proven to be a safe and effective medication. Acetaminophen overdose is one of the most common poisonings worldwide. People often think that acetaminophen is extremely safe. However, it may be deadly if taken in large doses. Acetaminophen has a narrow therapeutic index, which means that the dose that can cause toxicity is not much higher than the therapeutic, or recommended, dose. For example, just 6 grams of acetaminophen (only 12 Extra Strength Tylenol™) per day for 2 days can cause liver toxicity or even liver failure in some patients. Many over-the counter (OTC) and prescription cough and cold products and pain relievers contain acetaminophen. Patients can easily take too much acetaminophen when using various products simultaneously to treat different illnesses. In fact, half of acute liver failures caused by acetaminophen are due to unintentional overdoses. It is important to read labels on OTC products to see how much acetaminophen is in each dose, and to be aware that the abbreviation “APAPâ€? is sometimes used to

indicate acetaminophen on prescription labels. Symptoms of acetaminophen toxicity can resemble flu-like symptoms, which unfortunately may lead people to take more acetaminophen. Often the symptoms of acetaminophen toxicity do not show up until as much as twelve hours after ingesting the medication. A doctor or a poison center should be contacted if an acetaminophen overdose is suspected. MESSAGE FROM CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH
Rev. Kathryn Carroll MATTERS OF THE SPIRIT There’s a sturdy, oval table in our kitchen that has served the family well since our children were very little. Thousands of meals have been spread on it and it has been witness to countless conversations, stories, art projects, play-date lunches and birthday parties. One of the lovely aspects of the table is that it expands — there are two leaves that can be added when friends come over – and, what’s more, being an oval shape it always feels as though there’s room for yet one more chair to be pulled up. Our kitchen table symbolizes for me the saying, “The more, the merrier!” In the Hebrew Bible, the prophet Isaiah promises us that the the kingdom of God is a place where all are welcome and there
is always room for more. Isaiah speaks on behalf of the Lord: “And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord... these I will bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer... for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” We can discover that welcome in a faith community where there is opportunity to worship, pray, study and serve in God’s name. We can embody that welcome by encouraging others in their walk of faith. Like a beautiful banquet table spread for a multitude, we are all invited to the Lord’s Table of spiritual food. Take your place and dig in; you’ll find sustenance for now and for all eternity. Rev. Kathryn Carroll is a Pinecrest resident and serves on the pastoral staff of Christ The King Lutheran Church, 11295 SW 57 Ave. (Red Road). Worship services are every Sunday morning at 8:15 and 10, with Sunday school for all ages at 9. For more information, go to <www.ctkmiami.org>.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES Aries - You may be heading to the end of one transition phase and starting a new life on the other side soon. You will want to take a new, uncharted path. Taurus - Your intuition came to the rescue recently, and it's paying off in very real dividends this week. You likely put a stop to someone's scam or scheme, and this week you are the toast of the town. You may be able to parlay your popularity into financial opportunities. Gemini - A new friend may introduce you to a new hobby or passtime that you have overlooked before. You may find yourself taking a class or seminar with your friend. Cancer - You will feel more ebullient this week, more interested in speaking your mind, and just in time, too. There is a big high mucky-muck hanging around your office whose connections and authority you can make use of in your quest for personal success. Leo - You will have an interesting day exploring new thoughts, ideas and concepts that will greatly improve your future. You will find that you have a lot of extra energy this week for the little tasks life brings. Virgo - The real secret behind the Law of Attraction is in the power of gratitude for the here and now. Think of three things to be grateful for each day and watch your abundance grow!
Libra - You are feeling a little confused or uncertain about how to approach a romantic question, and the answer lies in the old cliche "Be yourself". Speak from the heart. You may find yourself in a lucky encounter that dramatically changes your love live for the better. Scorpio - You may come up with a new idea for a recipe or find nutritional information online this week that will hit the spot tonight. Take a chance on something new. Sagittarius - You need a break, you have been falling into a well-worn rut lately. Let yourself play like a child. Sing, dance, play, just for the fun of it. Capricorn - You want to know something about a loved one or friend. Best route between two points is a straight line. Go and ask. They will be a little surprised, since you have said little to nothing so far, but it is likely they will be happy to hear of your interest. Aquarius - You may find a new way to communicate or learn a new language. If you are studying a second language, look for lessons online and play them in your car, it is a great way to cement what you are learning. Pisces Financial investments involving your house, home or family could bring in extra income or financial opportunities. Your mate or partner may bring news of extra income or a real estate opportunity. Watch your driving this week, rude or ignorant drivers easily anger you.
