Investing in Miami-Dade County

Great Grandma Ginger reads it!

‘Eggstravaganza’ marks the beginning of spring

BY MAYOR CARLOS ALVAREZ

Mayor, Miami-Dade County Take a look around. What’s happening is unprecedented in Miami-Dade County’s history. Together with public and private partners, we’re investing in infrastructure at a pace that hasn’t been seen in decades. A new, modern airport is evolving at Miami International. Plans are underway to construct a tunnel under Biscayne Bay to alleviate traffic congestion in downtown and improve access to the Port of Miami. To preserve water quality and conserve usage, our water and sewer system is undergoing extensive upgrades. Metrorail is undergoing its first major expansion in two decades. Neighborhoods throughout MiamiDade are benefitting from the Building Better Communities Bond Program. Now at the five-year mark, this ambi-

Declaration of Independence comes to Pinecrest BY LEE STEPHENS

More than 1,500 citizens – including Mayor Cindy Lerner and members of the Village Council — recently had the opportunity to view a rare original print of the United States Declaration of Independence at the Pinecrest Branch Library. The document also was displayed at Palmetto Senior High School where hundreds of students also had access to it. The document is on tour with support from the Pearson Foundation, Declare Yourself and the National Parent/Student Mock Election. The organizations are jointly presenting the only traveling print of the Declaration of Independence to help young Americans learn about the democratic process. Improving infrastructure is one of the most important roles of local government. These projects support thousands of jobs and position us to emerge from the current economic downturn better and stronger. To boost employment in the local building professions and trades, my

office is working with the County Commission and the Office of Capital Improvements to accelerate our building projects. Over the past 18 months, more than $500 million in capital contracts have been expedited contributing significantly to the local economy, As Mayor, my priority is to promote activities that advance economic recovery and make investments that preserve the quality of life of our residents. We’re doing some amazing things in the face of adversity. I am so proud of what MiamiDade is accomplishing, and there’s nowhere else I would rather call home.

SARAH TRALINS Gulliver Prep senior Sarah Tralins is the school’s nominee for the Silver Knight in the English category. Tralins has quite a track record of accomplishments in reading, writing and schoolwork, and holds one of the top grade point averages at the school. She also was the winner of the Advanced Placement English Award when she was in the 11th grade. “I’ve sent in writing not only for Reflections (a Gulliver publication), but also to national publications such as Highlights Magazine,” she says. “I think we’re going to send out stories this month to other national journals.” Writing must be in her genes, as her grandfather was an author and some of his work has been featured on the Sy Fy Channel. However, even though she is an excellent writer, Tralins believes her future lies in working with children with disabilities. “I have a niece who is mentally disabled,” she says. Because of her niece’s condition, Tralins is more attuned to the needs of the disabled, so she does most of her volunteer work at Shake-A-Leg, the non-profit Coconut Grove organization that teaches handicapped children how to sail. Sailing also has a connection to her childhood. “I grew up sailing with my family and spent most of my time on sailboats,” she says. “When I was 12, my father passed away. So, at Shake-A-Leg I can go back to sailing. I can have a lot of fun and watch the

kids accomplish a lot of things they’ve been told they can’t do.” Tralins has been volunteering at ShakeA-Leg for about three years, primarily during the summer. But, she says finding the time now is difficult because she is an athlete. “I’ve played varsity tennis all four years of high school,” she says. Tralins is usually seeded first or second in doubles. Last year she and her partner were district champs in doubles, but lost in the regionals. In the past, she’s been fifth in singles. Despite the time athletics takes, Tralins participates in several service clubs. “I take two or three organizations that I love and I’m active in them,” she says. Before transferring in her junior year, Tralins attended Ransom Everglades. While there, she helped create a group called the Marine Awareness Club (MAC), which raised money to save the ocean. At Gulliver, she’s a member in Teen Spin and Interact. She’s also a member of the service club Twenty Little Working Girls. For that organization, she has chaired the fashion show auction and is the Hospitality Chair, as well as on the general board of directors. Since transferring to Gulliver, Tralins has become active in Homeless Movie Night. Once a month Tralins and her friends join members of Touching Miami With Love at the Community Partnership for the Homeless to serve sandwiches, lemonade and popcorn. They also watch movies. Afterward, they give away extra food or blankets on cold nights. “It really opens your eyes when you walk around downtown giving out the extra blankets,” she says. “My mom and I are going to become more involved. We’re going to start trying to recruit kids so they understand there is a need. It’s heart breaking to see them walk out in the cold and we get to drive home and have a really nice dinner and shower.” Tralins’ future will include more cold weather as she plans to attend Tufts University in Boston. She says she is uncertain about a major, though she’s considering art history as a minor. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

MEGAN WOOD Gulliver Prep senior Megan Wood has loved art and architecture from the day her mother dragged her to an art show that featured works by an older cousin. When she graduated to the prep school, she decided to take every architecture class available, a move that also exposed her to the world of art. “I had no desire to do anything artistic,” Wood says. “But everything fell into place. I’m a super organized person, but I have a creative side to me. I took art because I wanted to get into the (architecture) program; I never thought I would ever continue with it.” That love of architecture led to her being named the Gulliver Prep Silver Knight nominee in the Vocational/Technical category and also earned her the school’s Architecture Award in both her sophomore and junior years. To learn more about architecture, this past summer Wood interned at the Coral Gables office of Perkins + Will, one of the leading international design firms. Wood says the company is designing the Princess Nora bint Abdulraham University. “It’s going to be the largest university in the world and it will be located in Saudi Arabia,” she says. “I didn’t do design, but I did administrative work and I worked with

the marketing group.” Wood says the university will have different schools set up for women and they can also live there. “It opened my eyes a lot to what’s going on in the Middle East and maybe doing design for education purposes,” she says. “I was so lucky I got to work on that project.” Along with being a top student, Wood is also a top athlete at Gulliver and is captain of the volleyball team. The team had a good year. “We lost the district final game, but we went to regional quarterfinals,” she says. Wood also enjoys club volleyball and played for three years for the South Dade Volleyball Club. She does not plan to play in college because she wants to focus on her studies and growing as a person. Wood has already been accepted to the University of Miami, the University of Florida, Southern Methodist University and Tulane. She is waiting to hear from a few more colleges before making a decision. “The only architecture school I didn’t apply to is SMU, but they don’t have an art program,” she says. Though she is undecided about where she plans to attend college, she does know that she will major in architecture and possibly minor in art. She is interested architecture with an environmental design focus. Her community service includes time on the Student Honor Council and this year she is the chief justice. “If someone cheats, it’s like a judge-jury system,” she says. The honor council makes a recommendation to the administration on how the case should be handled. “We also counsel kids on integrity and how to steer away from cheating situations,” she says. “It’s a three-strike policy. If they come in and they have a strike, they can’t be in the honor societies; a second strike means no letter to colleges or in-school suspension; third strike is expulsion. We also have a warning, but it’s not actually in our handbook.” The warning could be used in instances where the students don’t realize they are cheating. Wood is also co-president of the Student Anti-Genocide Coalition or STAND. The club’s main focus is on Darfur. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society and English Honor Society.” By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

shelter in downtown Miami. He collected more than $1,500 in funding for the project, including a $500 grant from the Office Depot Foundation. “We collected more than 19 book bags and two shopping carts full of school supplies just for the kids,” Antonelli says, adding that the children who live in the shelter just don’t have enough school supplies. The supplies were left in a storage area where the kids could take supplies as they needed them. Some of the money Antonelli collected was used to buy materials and toys for a toddler play yard built in one of the shelter’s communications areas. “It was a meeting room where the parents could go in and do paperwork,” he says. “We built an indoor, fenced-in play area with a gate where the parents could safely leave their kids.” The plans called for mounting a sturdy plastic gate to the wall and floor. They filled the play area with a toddler play house, toy trucks and other vehicles the children could push around while their parents completed paperwork.

“Besides building the play area, we ended up painting a couple of bedrooms and built a 14-foot mural,” he says. “They had one that had been there. We built one that was much nicer. We built it out of stone edging and used lava rocks to fill it in. We planted a little garden in front of it.” Twenty-five Boy Scouts and adults began work at 8 a.m. and finished around 4 p.m. Their work was admired by the children living at the shelter. “They were going to the second floor so they could see the mural from high up and saying they liked it,” Antonelli says. “They had a big barbeque on that day. A couple of the kids were fascinated by my mom’s movie camera. We got to see a couple of kids enjoying what we were building.” Antonelli had to fit his Eagle Scout project between sports activities. He plays football, basketball and baseball at Westminster. He’s captain and plays shooting guard on the basketball team; is a wide receiver on the football team, which won the district championship last year; and he pitches for the baseball team, which won the state championship last year and just

began the 2010 season. Antonelli says he has great hope for the team this year because the core has remained intact. As for his future, he’s already been accepted to Elon, Purdue, Florida State and Clemson. He’s still waiting to hear from William and Mary College and Notre Dame. “I’m not really sure what I want to do yet,” he says. “My mom went to FSU and my brother goes to Purdue. But Elon is a school we’ve always looked at.” Aside from scouting and sports, Antonelli keeps busy with extracurricular activities. He’s in the National Honor Society, the Math Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, the Spanish Honor Society and the Fellowship for Christian Athletes. “I’ve volunteered at my school; I help tutor different kids in math, Spanish and history,” he says. “I also do the humanities ministry at my church, St. Louis Catholic Church.” He has also worked as a volunteer at the basketball camp and the Five Star Baseball Summer Camp at Westminster. A MESSAGE FROM CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH

Rev. Kathryn Carroll MATTERS OF THE SPIRIT There’s a sturdy, oval table in our kitchen that has served the family well since our children were very little. Thousands of meals have been spread on it and it has been witness to countless conversations, stories, art projects, play-date lunches and birthday parties. One of the lovely aspects of the table is that it expands — there are two leaves that can be added when friends come over – and, what’s more, being an oval shape it always feels as though there’s room for yet one more chair to be pulled up. Our kitchen table symbolizes for me the saying, “The more, the merrier!” In the Hebrew Bible, the prophet Isaiah promises us that the the kingdom of God

is a place where all are welcome and there is always room for more. Isaiah speaks on behalf of the Lord: “And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord... these I will bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer... for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” We can discover that welcome in a faith community where there is opportunity to worship, pray, study and serve in God’s name. We can embody that welcome by encouraging others in their walk of faith. Like a beautiful banquet table spread for a multitude, we are all invited to the Lord’s Table of spiritual food. Take your place and dig in; you’ll find sustenance for now and for all eternity. Rev. Kathryn Carroll is a Pinecrest resident and serves on the pastoral staff of Christ The King Lutheran Church, 11295 SW 57 Ave. (Red Road). Worship services are every Sunday morning at 8:15 and 10, with Sunday school for all ages at 9. For information, go to <www.ctkmiami.org>.

• EDUCATIONAL AND TEEN ADVICE • Toby Rose ASK TOBY I have been accepted Early Decision by my dream school, Tulane. Now my economic status has changed; my dad lost his job. What can I do? You need to email your Early Decision School and explain the entire situation. Then apply to a school that meets your economic needs. Tulane needs to release you from your Early Decision commitment before you can attend another college. It will be very important to prove your situation to Tulane. Many students fake your situation just to be released because they have found another school they would rather attend. Why do the colleges make it so difficult to apply? Online applications are a real pain. I agree, online applications are a pain. It was much easier before computers arrived. Only after a student/parent actually completes an application will they begin to understand the utter frustration of the entire college application process. I recently came to the United States from France. I really am having trouble coping with all my schoolwork and the customs of the American teenager. Where do I begin? I truly understand your situation. Currently I am working with at least 10 students who have recently moved to Miami. Moving is hard enough as it is and on a teenager it can be very stressful. Please call me at 305-238-7737 to set up an appointment and hopefully I will be able to teach you how to navigate the waters of your new community.

How old should children be when I have my first discussions on tough topics, such as drugs, drinking and sex? Believe it or not, the average age for kids to start drinking is 13, so I recommend that parents have as many informal talks with their kids as the subjects come up. There is no definitive time, except early. Elementary school is the time to really weave sensitive subjects into pick-ups after school, like taking your daughter to ballet or picking up your son from football practice. It is a wise parent who spends as much time as possible with their kids after school when they are in elementary school. This is the time that you will start talking, perhaps even second or third grade; it’s not too early. By middle school — sixth, seventh and eighth grades — most kids are playing “scavenger. That is a game where kids go into the closets — your closets, their grandparents’ closets and friends’ closets — and take pills from any container, then they go to a party and start popping the pills to see who can pass out first. So it’s never too early and there’s never enough time — talk, talk, talk, until you’re sick of hearing yourself. My son has autism and I haven’t heard of any research facility that has hope for all of us who suffer with children of this disease. What is going on in this field? I can only tell you that it’s slow, but progress is progress. The University of Miami medical school got $20 million to fight autism. That’s a great gift. Research takes time, and everyday more and more children are being diagnosed with autism. More and more children mean more and more research because parents are demanding and asking questions of pediatricians and other doctors that at this point are very difficult, if not impossible to answer. I think if a particular cause interests you, you need to write your congressman, email them about research for different areas.

“Realtor named member of Top 5 in Real Estate Network”

(Princess Grace and Mr. Chubb’s, A Paws 4 You Rescue Dog)

“Reaching the pinnacle of her profession nationally, JoAnn Roberts, of Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate was accepted as a Member of the Top 5 in Real Estate Network, the most prestigious of all industry achievements, a company spokesperson says. More than just a sales-driven recognition, the Top 5 in Real Estate Network meets a need that has never been addressed – helping consumers identify the most professional real estate agents in North America, says the spokesperson. To qualify, each member must first meet a stringent set of criteria, based upon performance, as well as educational and professional skills and service to the consumer, adds the spokesperson. Members of the Network are carefully selected and managed by RISMedia, which has provided the real

estate industry with objective, unbiased news for nearly 30 years, says the spokesperson. As a Member of the Top 5 Network, Roberts is among the first real estate agents to be accepted into the organization, says the spokesperson. Allan Dalton, the president and cofounder of RISMedia’s Top 5 Network congratulated Roberts for earning this top status within the industry. “JoAnn has reached the very highest level of North America’s residential real estsate industry. Not only are her professional accomplishments extraordinary, she has long been a true champion for home buyers and sellers in her area. It is a pleasure to welcome JoAnn into this elite group of industry leaders.” According to John Featherston, RISMedia’s CEO and publisher and cofounder of the Top 5 in Real Estate

Network, the significance of Top 5 is that consumers deserve full transparency regarding all manners, related to the real estate transaction, which often begins with the need to select a highly competent, experienced and results-oriented real estate professional. Top 5 in Real Estate has been established to both empower consumers with leading real estate content through Top 5 members, as well as to ensure that consumers are made fully aware that there is a material difference between average and exceptional real estate professionals, says Featherston.” JoAnn Roberts, a top producer with Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate in Pinecrest, Florida is the head of The Roberts Team. The Florida Heart Research Institute has partnered with the State of Florida to raise awareness of heart disease and collect money for heart research at the same time. In March, the campaign for Make Florida the State of the Heart, kicks off at all driver’s license bureaus. Floridians will be able to donate to heart research and awareness when they first get their licenses or go to renew their licenses. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in Florida and the United States. In Florida alone, heart disease is expected to kill 50,000 deaths people. Hospitalization costs for Floridians with heart problems could top $18.6 billion annually. So representatives from the Florida Heart Research Institute went to the state and asked to participate in the programs that can collect donations through the license bureaus, either at the offices or online. Legislation was passed last spring and in October the program became official. Staci Ehrenkrantz, spokesperson for the State of the Heart campaign, said anyone getting or renewing a license may donate to the program. However, the state is featuring the State of the Heart program in March. “All the bureaus will have banners, posters, tent cards. All the employees will have buttons and some employees will be wearing T-shirts,” she said, adding that this will happen all over the state. “Working with the driver’s license bureau has been wonderful. They are very encouraged with this particular campaign because heart disease is the number one killer.” The campaigns conducted with the bureau’s can be quite lucrative. “When they do these campaigns, they get anywhere from $100,000 to $500,000 in that month,” she said, adding that the additional funds will enable the institute to do more prevention programming and more education. Not only will there be promotional materials visible, the examiners also will ask everyone if they would like to donate

to the cause when they are tallying up for payment. The institute also receives funds from the Stop Heart Disease license plates. The voluntary contribution at the driver’s license bureaus compliments the license plate program. “This gives them another opportunity to donate to the cause,” she said. For those who can’t afford the “Stop Heart Disease” license plate, the month long campaign gives them a chance to donate. The Institute has received almost $1.5 million from the license plate program but Ehrenkrantz said more funding is needed. “We strive to promote it and generate more funds so we can do more programming,” she said. “It goes for some research and education and prevention programs. We’re able to go out and do cardiovascular programming for underserved.” They go to the areas of the county where people don’t have as much access to healthcare and they conduct health fairs, doing things such as checking cholesterol and teaching people about heart disease. “We do some counseling. We talk to them about how to make some improvements,” she said. If there is a problem, the Institute workers can refer them to a doctor or a federally funded clinic. For more information about FHRI, go online to <www.FloridaHeart.org> or call 305-674-3020, ext. 3254.

Alexander School students, parents and staff continue their support for the community and the less fortunate. So far this year, they have collected money for the Susan B. The Alexander School family also donated truckloads of relief goods for Haiti’s earthquake victims and gave many new toys for the Toys for Tots Christmas drive. Most recently, the Center for Great Apes in upstate Wauchula received needed items and the school is now collecting toys, household items and clothing for the Migrant Workers. When you hear the words “therapy clinic” do you picture a somber place with rows of closed cubicles? If your doctor refers you to Progressive Therapy Center, 12651 S. Dixie Hwy., that’s not what you will find. Clinic director Greg Welch, with 22 years experience, has created a large open space with large windows bringing in sunlight and a soothing view of treetops and blue skies. Patients referred there for occupational or physical therapy lie on adjoining tables while clinic staff tends to them. The openness permits patients, who average three visits a week for as much as eight weeks, to talk to each other and develop a circle of friends. “If you’re going to be here for that much time, you might as well have fun,” says Welch, who co-owns the clinic with his wife Jackie, also a therapist. The staff, who average 17 years of experience, includes three occupational therapists and five physical therapists. Welch explains that occupational therapy treats the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand injuries, while physical therapy treats the neck, back and lower extremities. Clients range in age from children to seniors; the most frequent complaints that bring referrals are neck pain, shoulder surgery, labrum tear (related to the shoulder)

and rotator cuff. Knee surgery, including ACL tears and total knee replacement, and ankle surgery provide additional reasons for therapy. The clinic staff spends time in getting to know each patient in terms of family life, vacations and other details; they work as a team in determining the best approach to each patient’s treatment. “We want people to be happy here,” says Welch, who wants patients to feel at home. “Our staff aims for the A-plus level of service, not the B grade.” To help “de-stress” patients, yoga classes have been added. Massage therapy and personal training are “coming attractions” at Progressive Therapy Center. Welch and his clinic “family” have been collecting clothes, medical supplies and other items to send to earthquake survivors in Haiti. The bags of donated items have been coming in at such a rate that the office landlord allowed a room across the hall from the clinic to be used for additional storage. This makes the second shipment in the clinic’s drive for Haiti; an earlier shipment was sent to St. Louis Catholic Church for transport to Port au Prince. Welch says he is considering a future trip to Haiti to assist in medical treatment of the survivors. For information, call 305-232-9222 or address email to <gwelch227@aol.com>.

JDRF Walk steps off March 20 BY GABY MARIN

Student, Palmetto High School Ariela, my motivation, my inspiration, my friend, I have known you all my life and shared every moment by your side. Although, we are only months apart, you have had a rough start in life and already gone through more than what many people will endure in a lifetime. I did not understand when you had open heart surgery. You were only nineteen months old then, but I do remember us being friends and how you always made me laugh and held my hand. I remember that day when we were about five and you went to the hospital again. When you came out, you had to stick a needle in your thumb, but you said it was fine. You said, “I now have to count this thing in my blood called insulin because they had found diabetes type one.” But I didn’t understand what that meant. I just turned away and closed my eyes every time you pinched your thumb. With a hurt in my heart that I could not explain I asked myself, “Oh, Dear God, why? Why my

best friend? She is only five.” Then one day I was brave enough and I tested my blood and pinched my thumb; you laughed so hard when I screamed and jumped, and one more time you were there by my side. You held my hand and said, “It’s gonna be alright.” You have let me look at life through your eyes, and through the years I’ve learned to see the positive side. Ten more years have now gone by and I know that our friendship will last a lifetime ‘cause our friendship today is stronger than an ox. And this is why, Ariela, that you are my friend and you inspire me a lot. Please, help us find a cure to diabetes. Sponsor me as your walker at Walk-JDRF and type walkers name Gaby Marin, Florida, as easy as that. Together we can! The Miami leg of the 5K Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk will step off from the Miami Metrozoo on March 20. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the walk starts at 8:30 a.m. For more information, go to <http://walk.jdrf.org/>.

As the U.S. economy deteriorates and more and more consumers either lose their jobs or their hours are cut, they will no longer have the means to keep up with all of their credit card payments. A Florida consumer at this stage will have to make a decision as to whether to put food on the table, pay the mortgage to keep or make their credit card payments. This has caused credit card companies to rethink their approach to collecting payments or settling the debt in full for a reduced amount. Credit card companies know that the next meltdown coming is in the credit card debt arena. So they are now quietly negotiating settlements with consumers for a reduced amount of what is owed, rather than have the debt charge off and they get nothing. Some of these same credit card companies also are mortgage lenders and have now learned the concept, that it is better to get something now than to risk getting nothing in the future. Most credit card companies don’t disclose this practice as they fear that they will be flooded with requests from consumers who are experiencing financial difficulties. According to Moody’s, the charge off rate for credit cards for July, 2009 was 10.52 percent and that’s expected to increase to 12 percent by the middle of this year. You will see this rate continue to increase until unemployment rates begin to stabilize or decrease. Currently we are around 10 percent unemployment, a number that hasn’t been seen in

decades, and its still climbing. As the need for settlements increase, banks are trying to keep up with the demand by training their customer service reps to negotiate settlements, rather than escalating the call to a supervisor. Some credit card companies are even getting more proactive and are reaching out to the consumer early, once they realize the consumer is having financial difficulties. The credit card companies know that once someone is unemployed their chances of repayment is next to none, so they want to step up to the plate early in hopes of recovering some of their money. Now everyone’s situation is different and credit card companies are not revealing what the eligibility guidelines are to qualify for a settlement. But one thing for sure is that to qualify for a settlement the consumer needs to be late with payments. But other factors to consider are income, and other expenses and payment histories. Marlon Baugh specializes in providing information to consumers that allows them to make informed decisions about their credit cards and other debts so they can learn the insider secrets that can save them thousands of dollars over the life of their loan. Baugh may be contacted by calling 954-347-1516 or by email at <marlonbaugh@specializedfinancialsolutions.com>.

A “buyers’ market” is just what it implies – a market in which buyers have the advantage and exploit it. It’s not a market that rewards foot-dragging, hesitation or indecision. Unfortunately, all factors that created the buyer’s market we have today have been reported so negatively and rampantly by various media outlets that buyers are themselves too spooked to even enter the fray. Strangely, people were buying like crazy during the previous seller’s market, when the advantage was actually all to the sellers. That’s when buyers didn’t fear paying too much, and now that prices are so low and inventories so high, suddenly buyers

do fear paying too much! However, it’s impossible to purposefully time the market to buy at the bottom and sell at the top. Once the market begins to settle and subsequently improve (and it will), the amazing buying opportunities we’ve been seeing will begin to disappear. With decreased buying activity now, pent up demand for homes will explode when the market recovers, and buyers will once again be competing for the best homes. Don’t rely on luck in the marketplace, rely on planning. Make a careful decision with a predictable outcome. Has the market dropped enough, right now, to make such a purchase? Absolutely! Forget about the top and the bottom and enter your “safe zone” with confidence. Mike and Lynda Morgan may be contacted at the Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate Offices at 12155 S. Dixie Hwy., 305-253-2800 or by email at <mmorgan321@aol.com>.

Getting your biz on the web doesn’t have to be a pain in the pixel FROM ROBIN’S DESK ––––––––––––––––––––– BY ROBIN KORTH ––––––––––––––––––

I recently met with Roberto Espinosa of CPC Computer Consultants. Our discussion took us to the fact that every business today should have an effective Internet presence. “Anyone can make a website for your business these days, but to make it effective and profitable takes smarts” says Espinosa.

Patricia and Roberto Espinosa –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

He explained that many business owners don’t know where to begin. They often think that creating a website will take a lot of time out of their already too-busy days and cost a lot of money. “This just isn’t the case,” he says. “Sometimes all I need is a business card and a clear idea of what a company does. I have the experience and knowledge to do the research and create the links to get your website designed and in place without taking a lot of your time. All of our clients know what the expenditure will be before the first pixel is placed.” Espinoza and wife, Patricia, have been offering professional Internet consulting,

A&P at SW 124th Street and South Dixie Highway, 1964

web design, website optimization and web hosting to clients around Miami since 1998. The Espinosas specialize in maximizing visibility and heightening incoming traffic to their clients’ websites through strategic web positioning and searchengine optimization (SEO). Call the Espinosas at 305-347-5172 or visit them on the web at <www.cpcwebsolutions.com>.

Bill Haast of the Miami Serpentarium

MEMORIES OF A&P AND SERPENTARIUM I was delighted to received this email: “My life-saving trip to the A & P is a memory I recalled with the picture you placed in the paper. I worked at a doctor’s office, which was near to the A&P. One Saturday morning a mother called to say she was on her way in with her young son who had just been bitten by a pygmy rattlesnake. The doctor immediately sent me to the A & P for a bucket of ice needed to treat the snakebite. “The boy was in the first examination room just in front of my desk, so I was very aware of the goings on! They brought the snake with them in a jar! I disliked snakes then and still do. By the time they finished treating the boy, I almost needed treatment myself! “The young man was okay. Then we simply called the nearby Serpentarium to pick up that snake! Keep up your good work. We are avid readers of the Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay papers.” LOOKING FOR VILLAGE PIONEERS I met with Mayor Cindy Lerner two weeks ago to discuss the Village’s

Pinecrest Pioneers project. This is a twofold program aimed at enriching the history of the Village and providing senior services through intergenerational activities among residents. We are looking to hear from people who can provide stories, memories and/or photos of what the area was like in the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. If you or anyone you know is ready, willing and able to talk about those days when we didn’t lock our doors, U.S. 1 was a two-lane highway and the bayfront was accessible, please contact me. I would love the opportunity to record memories, thoughts and insights of days gone by. Please call or email me. The mayor would like to hear from seniors who currently live in Pinecrest about what services the Village could provide to enrich their lives. Contact her at <mayorlerner@gmail.com> or 305234-2121 As ever, send photos, comments, complaints, questions, insights and ideas to me at <robinsdesk@communitynewspapers.com> or call me at 305-669-7355, ext. 275.

If you surf the Internet or send and receive email, sooner or later you will most likely be the victim of a virus attack. However, a continuously updated anti-virus software application can mitigate most potential problems. Some of the more popular programs including McAfee, Norton, AVG and Kapersky help reduce the threat, but can fall short if you do not routinely perform the updates because it is reported that more than 1,000 new viruses or variants are created every month. Since you can get a virus by opening an email or even by clicking on a picture or hyperlink at your favorite social media website, a stand-alone anti-virus program may not be enough. Many companies now offer firewall and browser protection included in a suite of software services. A firewall primarily protects intruders from accessing your computer via the Internet. Browser protection warns you, or can even block a potentially dangerous website. You may say, “I only open email from people I know.” That’s a good start, but we have seen several cases where someone’s email list has been compromised by a virus then subsequent attachments are sent out under the guise of that known friend or coworker. Another common problem we see is the pop-up that looks just like a Microsoft window beckoning you to click on a continue button to update your anti-virus. It doesn’t matter at this point if you click on continue or cancel, it activates a virus. Mac users don’t be fooled; your computer is vulnerable to virus attacks, too! The reason it seems that viruses are a PC only problem is simply because of the PC to Mac ratio. Since PCs control most of the desktop market,

COMPUTERS there are significantly more software applications available and consequently more viruses; as such, we hear more about those cases. Most of the major anti-virus companies provide Mac versions of their products and some even offer protection for smart-phones. Finally, you can get a virus even if you have installed an updated version of toprated anti-virus software on your computer. How? By over-riding the anti-virus or firewall warnings and clicking on the continue button. It’s analogous to giving the bad guy a key to your house along with the alarm code. You may have security in place, but once you relinquish the protection, only bad things can happen. It is through these types of passive interactions that viruses infiltrate companies costing them billions every year in lost productivity and repairs. What can you do to diminish these potential problems? First, allocate the necessary time and finances to install and manage a reliable antivirus, firewall, email and browser protection suite of software. Businesses should consider dedicated hardware appliances and software solutions. Finally, consult with your IT professional to develop a proactive backup plan, disaster recovery plan and managed service plan to protect your data. Experienced IT professionals can eradicate most virus attacks in order to recover important data and not simply offer to re-format the hard drive. For a couple just discovering they are pregnant, there are few more anxious times than their first trimester. A pregnancy test you can buy at the store will be positive at least from the time you are due for – or miss – your period. If your test is positive, there is no need to repeat it. Some women tell me they performed 10 pregnancy tests “just to make sure” they were all accurate. We worry more about false negative pregnancy tests rather than false positives. If the hormone level in your urine is too low (for instance, if you have not yet missed your period), the test may be negative even though you have a very early pregnancy. But positive is positive. You need not buy more. The initial question your doctor will ask is the first day of your last menstrual period. Your “due date” is calculated as 40 weeks from the first day of your period, rather than from the date you actually got pregnant. 40 weeks is 10 months, not 9 months. Therefore, your doctor will always think of your pregnancy in terms of the number of weeks along you are, not the number of months. The first trimester lasts until 12-13 weeks. By the time you are just past six weeks along, you should be able to see your baby’s heartbeat by ultrasound. Once the heartbeat is seen, most of these pregnancies will continue on without a problem. Seeing the heartbeat of a pregnancy is an incredibly reassuring sign that all is well. One of the first signs you may have noticed about pregnancy is that your breasts feel larger and sore. But the most talked about symptom of early pregnancy is, of course, nausea. Classically called “morning sickness,” this sometimes debilitating feeling of nausea in fact occurs at all times of the day and night. It is often worse when your stomach is empty, such as it might be when first waking up in the morning after sleeping all night (hence “morning” sickness). Therefore, we usually recommend that by keeping food in your stomach most of the time, you may be able to fend off some of this truly unpleasant sensation.

WOMEN’S HEALTH Forget about three meals a day; go for six to eight small meals, such as a pack of crackers, half a sandwich or whatever you can keep down. Also, separate food from liquid by about 30 minutes; the combo of food and drink together can make nausea worse. But despite how bad it feels, this nausea is actually a sign of a healthy pregnancy, and can also be reassuring that your pregnancy is normal. Your doctor will perform blood tests and a physical examination and will make sure you are on a prenatal vitamin. Ideally, you have been on a vitamin with folic acid for three months prior to conceiving. If you have another child at home, you are probably more relaxed this time around. However, just as no two children are alike, no two pregnancies are alike either. Do not let yourself make comparisons between pregnancies, as you may experience something this time that you did not the last. The relationship you have with your obstetrician is extremely important. Just like different individuals, different offices have different personalities. You should always feel comfortable and welcomed in the office, and be satisfied with the time you are given to ask questions. It is helpful to write down your questions so that nothing is forgotten. You should trust your doctor implicitly, and understand the way they practice early on. If the practice is a group, meet all the doctors and feel at ease with how your needs are being met. As you embark on this adventure, be excited for what the future holds and know that your pregnancy is a challenging, but natural and beautiful part of life. Dr. Randy Fink is a board certified OB/GYN and is medical director of the Miami Center of Excellence for Obstetrics & Gynecology in Kendall. He was named one of “America’s Top Obstetricians & Gynecologists.” He may be contacted at 305-274-3130 or via his website <www.miamiobgyns.com>.

Curves of Miami to host food drive benefiting local families BY ROBERT HAMILTON

Curves of Miami is encouraging women in the area to show their philanthropic strength by participating in the annual Curves Food Drive. And, even though donating food to families in need is its own reward, the club is offering compelling incentives for both existing and potential members who participate. Now through Mar. 31, Curves of Miami is collecting non-perishable items and monetary donations for food banks in the local area. The goal, according to Jeannie Borsanyi of Curves of Miami, is for the community to come together to help families in need. “At the core of our business is the message that women are stronger when they rally together, and that is the point we hope to bring home with our food drive,” Borsanyi said. “We want to show our community just how powerful the generosity of our members can be.” Borsanyi said members who donate a bag of groceries or make a minimum donation of

$30 during the month of March will receive a reusable Curves grocery freezer bag for free. Non-members who do likewise between Mar. 8 and 20 can join Curves for free. Curves will waive the cost to join. Borsanyi said that as part of this effort, Curves of Miami will be participating in a company-wide contest for the most food drive donations collected by Curves locations across the nation. Winners will receive one of several cash prizes to be donated to their local food bank. Each year, Curves locations collectively donate millions of pounds of food to feed the hungry. “We hope women in the Miami area will come together and participate in this initiative,” Borsanyi added. “Even if you’re not thinking about joining a gym, you can still drop off your donations. There are so many families right here in our own community who need our help.” For more information about Curves of Miami, located at 7120 SW 40 St., and the Curves Food Drive, contact Jeannie Borsanyi at 305-661-1288 or by email at <97PHS6U9@curvesmail.com>.

Corey Feldman and Felix Sama have been teaching young South Floridians how to become DJs since the turn of the century. “We do individualized lessons and group lessons,” Sama says. “We do groups with non-profits such as the Here’s Help Foundation, and we have classes and work with different schools.” Feldman says they also work with the Honey Shines Foundation, YMCA of Broward and the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. “What we have done with the YMCA is a quick, two-week program,” Feldman says. “We give them the concepts of the DJ system, and we teach them DJing at parties and clubs.” Sama says becoming a DJ is a good way to earn extra money. “This is a perfect way for not only a kid, but for an adult to be a DJ,” Sama says. “You can make $400 a pop on a weekend. What the course costs is worth it.” When a prospective client inquires about the course, they are given an orientation. “We let them see the curriculum we have and we break down the course from week to week,” Sama says. “We ask them if they have equipment. If they don’t, we recommend what equipment they can get from us.” During the course, the attendees learn the history of DJing, how it evolved and the equipment from the CDs to turntables. They also learn about famous DJs and how they became so well known. “It’s a lot of hands-on experience,” Sama says. It has to be, Feldman says. “DJ equipment is like an instrument; you have to play with the equipment to learn the DJing itself,” he says.

Sama says that one of the main things they teach is confidence. “Having confidence lets you control the room,” he says. “Having the confidence to get up there in front of the crowd is most of the battle.” The Rhythm City DJ Skool also has a home lesson option. “We also teach them vocal skills as well,” Sama says. “That can help you in a career in radio.” That’s where Sama makes his living, working for Clear Channel Communications. “I’ve been in radio for 28 years now. I started at Hot 105 in the ’80s, when it was a dance station,” he says. “Then I went to Power 96.” He has also had stints in Spanish radio at Salsa 98.3, then Mega 94.9. Feldman began in the mobile DJ industry in 1982 and has been working as a DJ ever since. “I own a production company sending out DJs and dancers,” he says. He’s also worked many big celebrity-studded events, including events for Oprah Winfrey, Chuck Norrie, Eric Roberts, Don Johnson and the Alonzo Mourning Charities, as well as the American Cancer Society. Even with the economic slowdown, Feldman’s production company continues to work, doing many events, including several at car dealerships. “We’re doing all their launches and all their production work when they introduce a new vehicle,” Feldman says. Successful students go on to participate in the internship program, which allows them to work on site with the production company. If the intern shows strong skills, they progress to host their own event, usually a children’s parity. For information, call 305-931-5695 or go to <www.rhythmcityweb.com>.

BY LEE STEPHENS Brit Olom Tours owner Karen Krugliak has been working in the travel industry for more than 25years. Brit Olom means “covenant with the world in Hebrew. Krugliak’s international travel experience exemplifies her company’s name. About a year ago, Krugliak and her husband, Zvi, decided they could use their travel knowledge and expertise to create their own company, and Brit Olom Tours was born. Although Krugliak’s career began in radio and television broadcasting, after meeting her husband she realized they had a mutual interest and passion for travel. Her husband was born in Israel and has arranged and escorted tour groups to the Holy Land for many years, and designed and led groups to Israel for B’nai B’rith International. Krugliak’s years of travel experience and know-how made her the perfect choice to become the direct-business cruise coordinator for large company meetings and conven-

tions, a position she held for many years before opening her company. Her knowledge, attention to detail, enthusiasm and love for travel have served her well through the years. She has arranged trips to locations around the globe. Krugliak enjoys planning and launching different travel groups. She has organized fundraising cruises for non-profit organizations, as well as exotic adventures on the other side of the world. Recently she returned from escorting a group on a river cruise and tour through China. She leaves next month for Europe on a Jewish Heritage Danube cruise, a tour she designed. Upcoming group tours by Brit Olom include a deluxe package to Israel in the fall that offers most meals and comprehensive touring; a Thanksgiving week cruise on the Oasis of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world; and a special Jewish Heritage Italy tour in 2011 that includes the Sistine Chapel. Mazda CX-9 gets significant facelift for 2010 Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Mazda CX-9 is the Japanese automaker’s flagship crossover SUV and the 2010 model marks its fourth year of production. For the 2010 model year, the CX-9 gets a significant exterior and interior facelift, more options and reinforced safety features. The CX-9 retains its flowing silhouette, prominent wheels and tires, muscular fenders and steeply angled windshield, as well as the sculpted five-point grille and wide bumper. The side windows form an open greenhouse and allow good vision from all three rows of seating positions. Unique trapezoid, dual chrome exhaust pipes accentuate the design. Other enhancements include: • A bolder grille, front combination headlights and fog lights. • Larger, more aerodynamic side mirrors. • Combination taillights that mimic the headlights, while incorporating a new red

lens at the bottom. • A new Dolphin Gray exterior color. The CX-9 is powered by a short-stroke, state-of-the-art 273 hp 3.7-liter V-6 engine with such advanced features as a die-cast aluminum block with cast-in iron cylinder liners and aluminum cylinder heads for minimal weight. The valvetrain includes chain-driven dual overhead camshafts for minimal maintenance, four valves-percylinder with direct acting bucket-type actuators, and variable intake valve timing. The CX-9 rides on a 113.2-inch wheelbase, one of the longest in the segment, which allows for easy access to the threerow seating. There’s plenty of room for adults in every seating position. The driver’s seat and steering column move easily over a long range of adjustment and the 6040 split second row easily seats three, has five inches of fore-and-aft slide travel and a reclining backrest. The third row splits 5050 and the legroom is among the best we’ve seen. Entry to the third row is a breeze, with 26 inches of access space between the folded second-row seat and the C-pillar. And even with the third row occupied, the CX-9 has 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Both second and third row seats fold flat for additional

storage space all the way up to the back of the front seats. On the inside, there’s a neatly organized combination of cylindrical shapes and blacked-out instruments on a T-shaped instrument panel. Brightly edged gauges and indirect blue illumination set a cool mood, while indirect lighting is embedded in the ceiling. Horizontal elements in areas such as the center panel, door trim and seat design intersect with vertical accents to create the same harmony present in fine furniture.

The CX-9 is a comfortable, luxurious SUV. It handles well around town for a big SUV and has plenty of power for the highway. Base price on the 2010 Mazda CX-9 is $32,645. Shut Out From Roth IRAs No Longer BY JASON JOLLS

Thanks to some recent tax law changes, high-networth individuals who are exploring additional ways to build retirement savings may want to take a closer look at traditional IRAs. In May 2006, the Tax Increase Prevention and Reconciliation Act (TIPRA) revised some of the guidelines covering IRAs. As a result, high-income investors whose earnings level would previously have restricted them to a traditional IRA can now convert those to Roth IRAs starting in 2010 and reap the long-term tax advantages if they will be in the same or a higher tax bracket in retirement. Because they allow qualified investors to withdraw all contributions and those earnings that meet certain requirements without federal income tax, Roth savings vehicles now appeal to a growing list of investors. Previously, Congress limited Roth conversions to those whose modified adjusted gross income was under $100,000. Under the new rules, however, the conversions will be available to investors at any income level, starting in 2010. So if you’ve maxed out your 401(k) or 403(b) contributions and don’t qualify to make Roth IRA contributions because of your income level, you still can make nondeductible contributions to a traditional IRA in 2009 and 2010 and then convert it to a Roth IRA in 2010. Then, when needed during retirement, investors can make withdrawals from the Roth IRA tax-free. Taxes will not be owed on the original nondeductible contributions because they’ve already been paid, although the previous earnings on those contributions will be taxable. Those who convert in 2010 only have the extra incentive of being able to spread the tax liability over the following two years. Thereafter, all future earnings in the Roth IRA will be available for taxfree distributions if certain requirements discussed below are met. With a traditional IRA, account holders are taxed on both their original contributions and their investment earnings when they start withdrawing money. Essentially, the tax responsibility has been deferred, not eliminated. The tax responsibility for a Roth IRA comes at the front end with nondeductible contributions. One of the advantages to account holders, however, is that they do not have to pay any taxes — even on investment earnings — at the time of withdrawal. And that means that Roth IRAs essentially can make investment income tax-free income.

The opportunity to translate nondeductible contributions into additional savings that could result in a tax-free income stream for retirement is especially attractive for high-net-worth individuals who can afford to pay the conversion taxes without using funds from the account itself. By doing so, an investor can avoid paying taxes on the distribution as well as an early distribution penalty of 10 percent. This assumes that a Roth IRA has been open for at least five years and the investor is at least age 59?. Moreover, because high-net-worth families often have retirement income from other sources, they may not need to tap into their converted Roth IRA for many years, if at all. (Unlike traditional IRAs, there are no mandatory withdrawal rules for Roth IRAs if individuals are 70?.) So investors who choose the conversion option can theoretically shelter their earnings for years — an attractive advantage in estate planning. Here is a simple example of the potential advantage of doing a Roth conversion: A married couple where both spouses are under age 50 can make nondeductible contributions of up to $10,000 ($5,000 per spouse) to traditional IRAs in 2009 and later. That amounts to $20,000 in additional savings, excluding earnings, in 2009 and 2010. When the couple converts their traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs in 2010, the taxes due will, unless elected otherwise by the client, be paid for in equal installments in 2011 and 2012. All future earnings, however, will accumulate tax-free and all withdrawals from the Roth IRA will be tax-free as well, if the distribution requirements are met (i.e., later than age 59? and five years after Roth IRA is established). And that’s something all investors can appreciate. Customer praises Wiremasters’ work BY ROBIN WOLFE

When Nancy Ware, owner of Trimline Custom Cabinetry, decided to remodel her 30-year-old Pinecrest home, she knew who she wanted to hire for her electrical work. “I met Kent Crook, head of Wiremasters Electric, many years ago on a kitchen installation,” Ware said. “It was not so much what he said, but the way he explained everything so thoroughly. He was concerned about doing the job correctly; he listened to my needs and concerns at the same time. Kent was the owner but I was curious to see how his electricians performed.” It turned out that Wiremaster’s electricians were extremely courteous, didn’t “strip and drop” pieces of wire and cleaned up after themselves. “They even got rid of all the old electrical in my attic, even though they didn’t have to,” Ware said. “They wanted to see everything clearly and were extremely thorough.” Not your “typical electrician,” Kent Crook is trained in the use of solar energy and is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and National Green Energy Council. He has opened Energymasters, a division of Wiremasters, in response to his customers’ interest in preserving the environment and lowering their electric bills. Also conscious about energy consumption and using “green” materials, Ware used recycled glass, fluorescent and LED bulbs, quartz counter tops, non oil-based paint and Energy Star appliances throughout her home. “Part of my motivation was to find out what did and did not work for my customers,” Ware said. “The under counter Xenon lighting truly brings out the brilliance of my granite. I even installed Energy Star air conditioning and got a nice rebate from FPL.” Ware also used formaldehyde-free cabinets and cast iron sinks made of fire clay because of their ability to retain heat. Wiremasters installed smoke alarms in each room that flash while you are sleeping. “I had never heard of that before,” Ware said. Remember all those plastic outlet covers you used to protect your children from plugging in utensils and house keys? “As of October 2009, the Florida electrical code requires that all outlets must be

installed with tamper-resistant, childproof features,” Crook said. “They are actually more streamlined and better looking.” Using an efficient company like Wiremasters was beneficial for busy people like Ware. “Everything was done with permits, to code,” she said. “This way I know that there are no substandard materials being used and everything is done properly. Inspectors are really our advocates.” Needless to say, Ware’s home passed inspection with flying colors. “Next, we are going to do the bathrooms and one needs a venting fan,” she said. “There’s no question that I will ask Wiremasters to do the entire job.” Wiremasters and Energymasters are full service electrical and energy efficiency companies with expertise in green energy sources. Husband-wife dentistry team keeps patients smiling

Doctors Jeannette and Mark Hall outside their office. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY LEE STEPHENS

Doctors Jeannette and Mark Hall have a thriving dental practice underway at 5990 Bird Road and it’s appropriately called the Dontics Center. The Halls are not only partners in business, they are married and have two children, Andre, 8, and Carmen Marie, 5. They have also managed to define their individual business roles — Mark specializes in orthodontics, while Jeannette focuses on endodontics or root canals. It has been said that life turns on a dime, but in their case it turned on Mark being left handed. They were both studying dentistry at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston. Jeannette was already at her lab station when Mark walked in. Left-handed people required a different set-up in the lab and there were just two of those positions available; one next to someone he didn’t know and the other beside Jeannette. “Which one would you choose?” Mark asks with a smile. Jeannette is a native of Miami and attended Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, then went on to Duke University. Her grandfather was a dentist and she says that for as long as she can remember she has wanted to follow in his footsteps. She serves as treasurer of the South Florida District Dental Association and recently, while going through her grandfather’s papers, she was surprised to learn that he had been a member of the association, too. In April 2008, Jeannette earned the distinc-

tion of becoming the only board-certified female endodontist in Miami-Dade and Broward. As for Mark, he grew up in Sand Lake in upstate New York. He went at Williams College in Massachusetts where he and a few friends helped pay their way by operating a used book store. Mark taught high school science and chemistry for a few years in Long Island before entering Harvard on a scholarship. At the time he met Jeannette, he was playing guitar in a band called Danger Space. Their son now takes guitar lessons, following in his father’s footsteps. After dental school, one of Mark’s instructors at Harvard was impressed with his work and invited him to join his practice. Mark accepted and practiced in the Boston area and taught part-time at Harvard before relocating to Miami in 2000. Mark sees orthodontics as a noble field and he enjoys transforming his patient’s smiles and improving their lives. In their separate-but-together practice, the Halls strictly follow certain guidelines, including the use of the most advanced sterilization techniques and technological equipment, including self-ligating brackets, digital radiography and a surgical microscope. They also employ a bedside manner that is gentle, loving and complete. The Halls are modest about the time they charitably give to those in the community in need. They say theirs is a family practice that is a labor of love. For information, call 305-667-8766.

The Clearwater Pools and Patio team. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY NANCY EAGLETON

Clearwater Pools and Patio workers maintain over 400 pools throughout the South Miami-Dade community and they know that your pool area is an integral part of your home. You swim, you entertain there and it is your backyard oasis. As with many Florida homes, your pool is probably visible from many of your rooms, so it is important for this area to be maintained and to look sharp. Clearwater Pools and Patio, at 12308 SW 117 Ct., maintains residential and commercial pools, repairs and installs pool equipment and specializes in renovating pool and patio areas. Owner Ken Manheimer assembled his team of seven professionals in 1996 and they have over 40 years of combined experience in the industry. “We have a fresh approach to pool service,” says Manheimer. “We strive to maintain our customers’ pool systems, educate our clients and communicate with them on a regular basis. Our supervisors are always on the road, so we are always available. “We are professional in our service, so we want to be professional in our company appearance, as well. Our trucks are clean and new and marked with our logo. Our supervisors are always in uniform because we enter our clients’ backyards, so it’s important for them to know who is there.” Clearwater Pools installs heat pumps so you can stay warm in your pool year-round. They also install salt chlorination systems for those who want an alternative to liquid chlorine. Manheimer says many pools need resurfacing after 10 tens and Clearwater Pools

offers all of the popular options. From Diamond Brite and similar finishes, to tile mosaics on the pool bottom and completely tiled pools, your pool can match the feeling of your home and be truly unique. With today’s pool renovations, it is also popular to add colored lights, steps and seated areas in the pool and even a beach entry, complete with chairs and umbrellas in the water. Water features, using natural or artificial rock, or beam water falls, which feature a sheet of water flowing off a straight edge, will transform your pool into an island retreat. “Pool areas are not just for swimming anymore,” says Manheimer. “They’ve become the place in the home to hang out, lounge and cool off when entertaining.” Clearwater Pools and Patio can also give your pool deck and patio a new and improved look. Manheimer says most customers today are choosing travertine or brick pavers on sand. The company also offers the popular Eurotile and Sundek surfaces. “There are so many materials and options for patio and pool coping surfaces,” says Manheimer. “Whatever a customer needs that’s pool related, we do. Some companies won’t touch small jobs. We’ll fix tiles that have popped up and touch up deck surfaces. We don’t say no to any customer request.” Manheimer says that beginning this summer Clearwater Pools and Patio will offer new pool construction service. Squid, fresh seafood, music key Deering Seafood Festival Mar. 28 BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ

The Deering Seafood Festival on the Bay has become one of the community’s most anticipated annual events, not only for offering Florida’s freshest fish and seafood, but also because each year the Deering Estate at Cutler creates something unique that debuts at the Festival. The valet bike service initiated a few years ago continues to encourage festival goers to go green and cycle to the historic estate, and last year the introduction of the Marine Mobile on Wheels allowed children a hands-on opportunity to learn about the ecosystem, the food chain, the environment and habitat of the specimens. For this year’s festival on Sunday, March 28, Deering Estate marine biologists braved the myths about the deep dark waters of 20,000 leagues under the sea and are presenting the legendary sea creature, the squid. Found in waters all over the world, these cephalopods (animals with heads and feet) are not on the list of endangered species. Under the guidance of the educational and interpretative specialists at the Deering Estate at Cutler, boys and girls who are

eight years old and older, have the opportunity to join the Squid Squad to dissect a squid and learn about its different parts. Yoelly Burgos, staff member and marine biologist, explains that the squid produces ink that it cleverly uses for defense against predators. “Kids love this type of activity,” she said. “Through the dissection the kids will find the ink sac and then using a ‘pen’ — a part of the squid’s anatomy that acts like a back bone — they can write with the squid’s ink.” A few weeks ago, in preparation for the event some of the Deering Estate Foundation board members volunteered to try their hand at dissection. Carefully following Burgos’ detailed instructions, all in

the group were able to dissect the entire squid and successfully locate the ink sac and the two hearts. “These activities provide just a mere glimpse into the fun and interactive educational components that are part of the award winning programs that the Estate delivers to students and campers everyday throughout the year,” said Mary Pettit executive director of the Deering Estate Foundation. “We are delighted to showcase them at the Seafood Festival each year to raise public awareness. Not only is there the most delicious seafood, entertainment and much to see and do for the entire family at the festival, one also goes away having learned a little more about our South Florida environment, native habitats and biodiversity.” Dissection may not be for everyone, so there is still plenty to do at the upcoming Seafood festival. Top local restaurants, caterers and seafood markets prepare a dazzling array of the freshest catch. Steel drums, on-going musical entertainment, and costumed Bahamian Junkanoo dancers create a magical island celebration. Under the big top tent there are cooking demos with south Florida celebrity chefs: Clay Conley (Azul); Sean Bernal (Oceanaire); Damian Gilchrist (Ocean Reef Club); and Michael Bennett (Bimini Boatyard) and include food samples and wine tastings. Some of the other activities include an Artists’ Village, pontoon boat rides to Chicken Key; nature hikes and tours of the historic homes. The Deering Estate, a Miami-Dade County park, is located on 444-acres at 16701 SW 72 Ave. Admission is $12 in advance online for adults, $15 at the gate; Children 4-14, $5, and foundation members are admitted free. The event runs from 11a.m.–6 p.m. For more information, call 305-235-1668, ext. 263, or log on to <www.deeringestate.org>. Proceeds from the event benefit the Deering Estate Foundation.

Short Sale: What is it? Do I have that option? BY DANIA S. FERNANDEZ, ESQ. Attorney at Law

Many homeowners are in distress with their mortgages. Dealing with a foreclosure and/or negotiating a loan modification is a common situation throughout South Florida. A short sale may be a viable option for those who have had enough and want to simply move on.

Here is basic and useful information regarding short sales: 1. What is a short sale? A short sale is an alternative to foreclosure where the lender/bank agrees to accept a sale price on your property that is less than what is owe on the loan. If you want to sell your home and you have no equity and owe more than it is worth, it will need to be through a short sale process. 2. When should I consider a short sale? This depends on your particular situation. If you wish you could just walk away from your house, then a short sale is appropriate. If what you need is more time, whether to find a better job or save money, then wait and do not sell your house yet. Many homeowners unable to pay their mortgage believe that they need to leave their home immediately. Keep in mind that once you leave your home you will either be living with someone else or you will have to rent. Do not forget that to rent you will probably have to pay first and last months’ rent plus a security deposit. A better plan is often to stay in your home and try to work out a loan modification as you simultaneously defend your foreclosure. Only you can decide if you want to fight for the home you have worked so hard for. 3. Where do I find buyers for a short sale? A common problem with short sales is finding a buyer. You need a Realtor who is knowledgeable about short sales and can market your home

to quickly find a buyer. Most attorneys work with a Realtor who is well-versed in the short sale process. Contact your attorney and get a referral for a Realtor. It will make a huge difference. 4. Do I need an attorney? An attorney will negotiate the short sale transaction. A short sale is processed much like a loan modification. The attorney will prepare all documentation and negotiate a deal with the lender/bank. In addition, you need to make certain the lender/bank waives its right to a deficiency judgment against you. A deficiency judgment is when the lender/bank pursues its right to come after you for the difference of what they agreed to allow the home to be sold for and what you owed to them. 5. What will I have to pay? The Realtor’s commissions are paid at closing by the lender/bank. An attorney may have an initial processing fee and may negotiate their fees with the lender/bank. In every short sale, time is a major factor; therefore it is best that the process be handled by an experienced professional. If a short sale is not processed correctly it could take longer to get an approval and eventually you may lose the potential buyer. There is a timeline for every alternative and every homeowner should be clear as to what step to take first. Whether it is a loan modification, foreclosure defense, short sale, deed in lieu of foreclosure or bankruptcy, each alternative is going to be specific to your individual case. Don’t be a homeowner who abandons their home prematurely! There are many viable alternatives. My initial consultation is free and many attorneys do the same. Write down all the questions you may have, get clear answers and start sleeping at night.

Do not hesitate to e-mail me at dania@fap-law.com or call me at 305254-4492 for an appointment. You have nothing to lose and only knowledge to gain. Dania S. Fernandez & Associates, PA 10205 South Dixie Highway, Ste. 204 Pinecrest, FL 33156 <www.daniafernandez.com>

Myriam Angulo shows clients wine country during a recent Tuscany tour. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY LEE STEPHENS

Fifteen years ago, local girl Myriam Angulo went to Florence to study and never left. Angulo fell in love with the beauty that is Tuscany — the wine, the country, the people and the culture. She started DiVine Tours to share the experience with others. Until now, it has been mainly Californians that have taken advantage of the opportunity to see Italy up close and personal, but Angulo is now spending half her time in Miami to give South Floridians a chance to share a taste of the Tuscany experience. The next tour is slated for Oct. 10-19 and will be based on a beautiful country estate (see gallery pictures at <www.iesolana.it>).

Women Mean Business The tour is unique in that it features South Miami yoga and fitness instructor Traci Cole. It is geared to a youthful professional crowd with limited budgets and time. The deadline for signing up for the tour is the end of March. This is a locally connected tour, so bring along your copy of the Pinecrest Tribune and Coral Gables News for a group picture. For more information, call 305-2747067 or go to <www.divinetours.com>.

ORTHODONTIST’S CORNER

“Crowding is a common dental problem for children and adults. Many early teenaged children can be seen with one or both upper canine teeth erupting out of position above the other teeth. This is due to a lack of space for these teeth to erupt into proper alignment. In adults it is common to see a lack of space in the lower front teeth, as exhibited by teeth that are rotated, overlapped, or even completely blocked out of alignment. Aside from the esthetic issues involved with crowding, the problem is a predisposition to several dental health issues. Proper oral hygiene is more difficult in the presence of crowding, which can lead to a higher incidence of decay and gum disease. This becomes costly over a lifetime, and it can lead to premature tooth loss. Orthodontics is still the best, most conservative and least expensive way to prevent the damaging and costly long term effects of crowding.

Experience the difference at FLEMING’S RESTAURANT - STILL TRADITIONAL WITH NEW UPDATED STYLE By Julianne Power – Independent Restaurant Critic If you have not been to Fleming’s lately its time to come in and see the classy, warm ambiance that reflects the new and also keeping to their traditional quality service and one-of-a-kind dining experience. After experiencing a facelift from Chef Gordon Ramsay (Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares), one thing is hard to change and that is the exceptional food that Fleming’s is noted for. Subsequent to a brief change in menu, upon ordering any entrée they have brought back the crudités (fresh veggie plate with outstanding dipping sauce), soup de jour and traditional Caesar salad that comes with all meals. They have also brought back their famed dessert display with a wonderful selection of such traditional tasty treats as the apple walnut pie, marzipan, napoleon and more for us to indulge. Chef Orlando Casanova has also added his offerings to the variety of dinners with scrumptious tastes and presentation and daily specials. Fleming has a complete and well priced wine list to compliment any occasion or meal. There is also a full liquor bar where there friendly bartender can make anything from a classic cocktail to one of their specialty drinks. I visited Fleming’s for dinner with a friend recently so I could personally see what changes and non-changes had been made. As we entered the establishment we were greeted by Owners Andy Hall and wife Suzanne Thomas-Hall, who obviously after owning the establishment for the last 8 years, have created a restaurant to reflect their vision without compromising the integrity of Fleming’s tradition. You are sure to meet one or both of them during any of your visits to their restaurant, as they are its heart and soul. Noticing the rich browns and “Bird’s in Flight” theme as the new décor, we were instantly relaxed. As we sat at our table, a menu, wine list and a sheet with their weekly specials was presented. We picked the right night! On Wednesday’s the special was half priced bottles of wine (ALL WINES!). As water was poured and a crudités was given, our server immediately came to our table and asked what we would like to drink. I am not one to necessarily match my wine to my meal since I am a Merlot type of gal, I spotted a Bogle Merlot and ordered the bottle (for half price!). While our server pre-

sented and poured the Merlot, we reviewed the menu. They also have small plate specials on Wednesday’s which is an extension of their existing list of appetizers. We ordered a Steak Blue and a Blackened Mahi. We enjoyed our wine while waiting for the appetizers which came in a short time and looked delicious. The Steak Blue was steak medallions served in a marvelous blue cheese sauce and the Blackened Mahi presentation was great and served with a dipping sauce. Next we ordered our entrees. I ordered the Lamb Chop’s medium and substituted a Wedge salad for an additional $3.00 forgoing the Caesar. My friend ordered their Roasted Duck. After taking our orders we were given a bread basket and a cup of the soup de jour, which on this day was corn chowder. The soup was hot and mouth-watering filled with diced potato and corn. As our server cleared the empty soup bowls we were then presented with a traditional Caesar salad and my Wedge salad. The salads were served fresh and very tasty. Now we were in anticipation for the main courses. My Lamb Chop was cooked to perfection served with a mint chimichurri, sundried tomatoes atop couscous. My friend received her duck and was taken aback by how big the portion was. The half of duck was served with apples, prunes roasted potato and a traditional red cabbage that tasted perfect. By this time we were certainly filled and satisfied. But wait! Now it was time for coffee and dessert! We were directed to Fleming’s Dessert display to see if we could fit another bite. They had a selection of approximately eight desserts that I was told changes daily. Hmmmmm, there it was, a chocolate cake lover’s dream……Chocolate Mousse Cake. My friend and I decided to make room and share this dessert with coffee. YUMMY! As we finished our dining experience, we were presented with a check and could not believe the amount of food and drink we received for the price. Fleming’s has been a best-kept secret in the neighborhood of Pinecrest for 25 years offering its patrons “the best bang for your buck” while keeping a “fine-dining” experience. Fleming’s is located on the East side of US-1 in a quaint, quiet strip of businesses behind the Home Depot and Office Max on SW 136th street.
