ONE OF MIAMI’S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

Register now for HPBSA fall season BY LEE STEPHENS

he Howard Palmetto Baseball & Softball Association starts another season this fall and will broaden its scope to include 10U, 12U, 14U and high school (15 year olds and up) divisions. “After the 2008 Fall Ball season in early 2009, Howard Palmetto had many requests from our membership to expand the divisions to give more kids a recreational option during the early months of the school year,” said HPBSA President Keith Reilly. “Once again Howard Palmetto listened to our members and doubled our divisions to four.” The 2009 Fall Ball Season will allow players to continue to develop their skills in addition to allowing them to play more defensive positions, including pitcher, without the pressures of a true regular season. Details of the Fall Ball Season are as follows: • Season runs from September to November. • Two games per week will be played Monday through Thursday night. • All games will be played at Chapman Field Park. • No practices will be required during the season; just come out and play ball. • There will be a two-inning limit for pitchers. • Complete uniform will be supplied, including hat, shirt, pants, belt and socks. • Season will last up to 16 games, weather permitting. • A 5 percent discount will be given if player is registered before Aug. 7; $190; after Aug. 7, the registration is $200. To register for the 2009 Fall Ball Season, visit online at <www.howardpalmetto.com/eregister.php>. HISTORY The Birth of Kendall — Flagler Grove BY DR. SCOTT KENWARD

Here’s Jon Moss on vacation in Philadelphia and getting an upclose look at the historic Liberty Bell in Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Of course he remembered to take along a copy of his favorite newspaper and snapped this picture for us. Thanks for thinking of us, Jon!

Trustworthy surveyor and railroad foreman, John J. Hinson was appointed manager of Henry Flagler’s Kendal Grove in 1904 at the age of 35. The decision was made to clear a northwestern portion of the acreage for use as a citrus grove. The remaining strip of land around the south and east of the grove would remain undeveloped and serve as protection against disease, fire and “other objectionable features.” The working grove would then be defined by Southwest 100th Street on the north, 104th Street on the south, Dixie Highway on the west and a line

AVIVA AUSLANDER For the last three years, Palmetto High School senior Aviva Auslander has been having a ball participating in Kids2Kids, a fundraising program that sends ailing children connected to ventilators to camp. Kids2Kids is a studentorganized event and it brings together teens from area high schools to perform on stage. Auslander says she has had fun at the practices, lip synching and dancing in a Broadway type of show. “I sang and danced,” she says. “I’m not sure if it’s going to happen next year, but if they do it, I’ll do it. It’s something I really looked forward to participating in.” Auslander participated with a group of her friends and they all say it was a fun project, but most importantly, they helped children who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to spend time at an outdoor camp. “All of us who were in the program were so fortunate to be able to help people,” Auslander says. “Some of the kids came to the show and gave a speech. It was really touching to know that we helped these children. It makes you feel good about yourself.” Auslander also volunteered at Bet Beira last summer as a camp counselor. She worked fulltime for eight weeks, dealing with two, three and four year olds. As a counselor, she would keep them entertained every day with different art and science projects. She would

also have the kids play outdoors on water slides or splashing in kiddie pools and running through the sprinklers. “We helped them make arts and crafts to take home to their parents,” she says. “It was a very nice experience working with the kids. It teaches you to become patient. The kids were really sweet and you become attached. At the end of the summer it was sad to see them go.” With her work at Kids2Kids and being a camp counselor, Auslander has accumulated more than 500 community service hours. A few of those hours she came from working with Friends Forever Rescue, an organization that regularly transports homeless cats and dogs to PetSmart and displays them in hope of finding adoptive families. At Palmetto High, Auslander is a member of Key Club. She also was the junior class representative and this school year she moves up to senior class representative. “We come up with ideas for community service projects to be coordinated for our class,” she says. Auslander is also in the Spanish National Honor Society. Last year she was the secretary and her duties included organizing the tutoring schedule. Another important club for her is the Invisible Children Club, which worked to raise awareness about the atrocities going on in Uganda. Auslander is also in the National Honor Society and the Social Science Honor Society, and she will be the secretary in the Student Council Cabinet. “I’ve also been on the school newspaper for two years,” she says. “I’m going to be features editor this year. I’m excited, that was my first choice.” Auslander plans to go on to college and her number one choice is the University of Florida. She is also applying to the University of Maryland and the University of Miami. “I really like history, so that’s something I’d like to pursue as a major in college,” she says. “I’ve taken a lot of Advanced Placement history classes in high school.” Auslander is also considering going on to law school, so she plans to take numerous English classes in college. This summer, she is working as a receptionist in her father’s law office, which is giving her some insight into the operation of a law firm.

MALLORY NEUMANN It won’t be long before Mallory Neumann is a senior at Coral Reef Senior High. When school begins, she will be the captain of the dance team, which is part of the Visual and Performing Arts program. As a result of her volunteer work on the dance team and with her studio, Dance Attack, Neumann has accumulated more than 600 hours of community service. “I have a lot of dance community service such as working in the concessions at school,” Neumann says. The concession stand is open for basketball games and other events, and the various organizations at school work the stand to raise money for their programs. “The concessions help fund our shows and costumes,” Neumann says. “Basically our parents buy the stuff and donate it, and we try to get as many sponsors as we can. I’m trying to get sponsors now for next year.” They sell candy, hot dogs, potato chips and other items people buy when watching a game. The concession stand is open during summer school, so this summer Neumann worked four weeks in a row, putting in five days each week. “We collaborate with all the different visual and performing arts groups,” she says. “We do a lot of stuff together.” The students in the visual and performing arts present several shows. “Next year our show is going to be Fright Night and it’s for Halloween in

October,” Neumann says. “We always have an annual spring show. This past year we did the Nutcracker. This year we’re doing Fright Night. We don’t know what the spring show will be.” That’s because Coral Reef has a tradition of surprising the students with the spring show theme. The days that she’s not practicing at school or in a show, Neumann is usually found at Dance Attack where she takes classes in a variety of dance programs. Dance Attack recently participated in the American Dance Award competition, winning the group based competition and a $5,000 cash award for the gym. “With my studio, we do a lot of community shows that are themed — Christmas or the Fourth of July,” Neumann says. “We perform at a lot of retirement homes.” At school, Neumann is a student representative and often speaks on behalf of her classmates at the PTA meetings. “Our goal for this year and the past year is to speak with the state senators to get more money for schools,” she says. “We also try to improve the schools.” The student representatives deal with other students who have concerns about the state of the school, such as bathrooms that are in bad shape. “We have beautification days at the school and we plant trees, paint and we pick up trash,” she says. “Everyone is invited to that.” Neumann will be the senior class historian this year and her duties will include taking pictures at major events that she will share with the yearbook editor. She will also help plan events such as the senior prom and homecoming. Neumann also participates in DPAT, a program that matches a visual and performing arts student at Coral Reef with a fifth grader who is applying to a magnet school. The high school students help the applicant with their audition. Last year, Neumann worked with a girl who tried out for the dance program at Southwood. Neumann is considering studying dance in college and plans to audition for the dance teams at Florida State University and the University of Florida. She hopes to study nutrition and work for a dance company, something she feels is necessary because many dancers have eating disorders.

JAKE NOLAN Gulliver Prep student Jake Nolan doesn’t wait for anything. Although he is still in high school, Nolan is already an entrepreneur, having developed Flash-Me flash cards for IPhone and

ITouch. “I always create all these flashcards and my fellow students do the same,” Nolan says. “I thought it would it be great to do it once and share it.” Nolan says the online flashcard system is a designed to help students study and it works as well for third graders as it does for graduate school students. He says the beauty of the system is its mobility. “Say you are studying chapter seven in chemistry,” he explains. “You can go on our partner’s website and you can see if someone has already created the information.” The partner is Cramberry <www.cramberry.com>, an online flash card site created by Lateral Communications. It allows users to share their flashcards and already has a database of more than 50,000 cards. The information can be downloaded from the site or the user can go online and create the content. But Nolan’s idea is to make access to the cards even easier, so he worked with classmate Marie Wei to bring it to the

IPhone and ITouch. “She had just begun learning Objective C,” Nolan says. “Within a week, she had it completed on her phone. Flash-Me makes it simple to add new cards and edit them on the go.” Flash-Me had nearly 1,000 downloads in its first month. Eventually, Nolan plans to break away from Cramberry and have his own website and partner with textbook giant McGraw Hill to have their books cataloged on the site. “There will be over a thousand textbook titles,” Nolan says. The Flash-Me application was the primary reason Nolan received the Business Entrepreneur Award from the Miami Herald this spring. Although his business endeavors keep him busy, including the sale of security systems with Wei’s father, Nolan has also devoted time to community service. He has been a counselor at Camp Jenny, a camp in Georgia that brings in underprivileged kids from Atlanta for a week. He also helped raise

money for the camp through fundraisers at Beth Am. Nolan is on the BAFTY board at Beth Am as well. At Gulliver, Nolan is in the Junior Engineering Technological Society and he helped develop the website for ABLE, the invention the JETS students developed last year to help the handicapped. Nolan is also a part of Bike Miami, which brings hundreds of bikers to downtown Miami and Coconut Grove once a month. “It’s like a big family day out,” he says. Nolan also runs cross country for the Gulliver team. Although he’s not one of the top runners, he keeps at it and participates on the cross country team’s fundraising events. This summer, Nolan has been studying business and economics at Brown University. He is going into his junior year at Gulliver and plans to begin his college search soon. But, for now, Brown is at the top of his list.

Even in this difficult economy, Aleren is focused on exceeding customer expectations. For six years now, Aleren, located in Pinecrest, has provided the community with trendy, high-quality designer goods for kids and early teens. Janine Hensley, who owns Aleren, kept getting requests for larger sizes, and decided to open an additional location to meet those requests. “Our customers are very sophisticated shoppers and the older girls wanted a more sophisticated place to shop focused on them,” said Hensley. Thus, Aleren expanded by opening a new “young contemporary” store in the Riviera Plaza on U.S. 1 in Coral Gables. While the Pinecrest location continues to focus on toddlers through size 14

girls, the Coral Gables store focuses on lines with sizes for juniors and women. The store has an edgy feel with vintage, concrete-stained floors and metal fixtures stocked with designer brands targeted at juniors and women. Hensley says pays careful attention to fabrics and cuts of the garments so that they are suited and appropriate for teens, and in keeping a strong assortment for her stylish customer base. The Aleren Coral Gables store opened in June with private and public grand-opening events to show clients the new collections. The events featured hors d’oeuvres, Misha’s cupcakes and lots of giveaways. Aleren is open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Foundation’s SNAP completes first elderly assistance project BY LEE STEPHENS The Community Foundation of Pinecrest has created a list of priorities for programs and initiatives that will have a positive impact on the community. First on that list is the Senior Neighbors Assistance Program or SNAP. Mayor Cindy Lerner advised that 110 registered voters in Pinecrest are 89 years of age or older. Thus, it became evident that these and many other older residents on fixed incomes need help. “Helping facilitate home repairs seemed a great way to help our seniors who are struggling to make ends meet and who may not have family here to help them with minor repairs,” said CFP Chairman Steve Beiley of Adorno & Yoss. “This program will not only answer the needs of many but will also enhance the beauty of our neighborhoods.” Shortly after adopting this pro-

gram, Community Foundation of Pinecrest board member Jennifer Wollmann, of EWM Realtors, learned about a disabled senior whose home was in need of a facelift and the foundation jumped at the chance to help. With the help of Jose Revuelta, of J & M Professional Painting, to pressure clean and paint the house at cost, ACE Hardware donating the paint, Home Depot donating a gift certificate and Pedro Juan Catinchi, of JP’s Landscaping, helping with yard work, the CFP was able to put this project together very quickly. Jennifer Wollmann credits much of this quick makeover to Dale Hutchinson, owner of Fresh Impression of Miami, who assisted with the coordination of the fix up and donated her time and sweat equity into this project. Next week, this homeowner will celebrate her birthday and this effort made it a very special one indeed.

about 100 yards west of 72nd Avenue on the east. Hinson, a large man standing over six feet tall and weighing over 300 pounds, had the land cleared and set out the citrus grove on the tract in about 18 months. During the first three or four years of operation, Hinson reported personally to Flagler on all details of the work. Often en route to the Keys on his special coach, Flagler would stop at Kendall and take Hinson aboard, question him thoroughly on all matters pertaining to the grove, and put him off in Homestead to take the next train back to Kendall. The first permanent resident of both Kendall and what would become the Village of Pinecrest, Hinson built his home in Kendal Grove on the southeast corner of Flagler Boulevard (102nd Street) and US 1, facing the unpaved Dixie Highway. The home was cool and comfortable, with a wide porch that ran around the perimeter and windows and doors for every room opening onto the porch. Although no electricity ran into Kendal Grove, Hinson had a windmill that furnished running water to the two baths in the home, the citrus packing house and the worker’s quarters east of the house. In June 1913, John Hinson, a widower since his first wife, Ada Lee, died in 1909, having had two sons and a daughter, married school teacher and widow, Elizabeth Dowling, who had two sons and a daughter of her own. Elizabeth gave up her newly-appointed position as assistant principal of Larkins School (South Miami) to marry Hinson and manage the household. The six chil-

dren were brought up in the Grove, completing Kendall’s first family. Hinson built a small 20x20-foot store west of the tracks on Kendal Avenue (77th Avenue) just north of Smoak Road (100 Street). In April 1914, Kendall’s first Post Office began operation out of the Hinson store. Early on, Hinson’s retail business consisted primarily of trade with the local Seminole Indians and occasional use of one of his four combination-lock post boxes. John Hinson became Dade’s first county commissioner in the early 1910s, serving on the five-member board for seven-and-a-half years. During prohibition and later during the depression, many of the men of Kendall supported their families by bootlegging. According to rumor, Hinson was a kingpin of the business, selling liquor on a wholesale basis, unmolested by authorities. No doubt his service as commissioner encouraged the police to look the other way. Kendall’s first resident, entrepreneur and county commissioner, John J. Hinson, died in 1928 at the age of 59. In October 1920, wealthy citrus grove owner and real estate developer, George Edgar Merrick, purchased the 200 acres of Model Land Company now known as Flagler Grove for $110,000 or $550 an acre. At the time, Merrick was just beginning the development of Coral Gables on 1,600 acres of pinewoods and citrus grove just a few miles to the north. Merrick saw the potential of Kendall real estate and intended to develop Flagler Grove as his next project, but it was only six months later that he had a change of heart. In April 1921, George Merrick found himself overextended with his land holdings and in order to concentrate his efforts on the completion of Coral

Intersection of Sunset and South Dixie Highway, circa 1926.

Gables, sold Flagler Grove to his business partner, Richard H. Rice. Dick Rice had come to Miami from Arizona as a teenager in 1903 with his father, Tom, and settled in the Shenandoah neighborhood of Miami. He attended Miami High, married Key West schoolteacher Naomi Mayolini in 1911 and made his fortune with his Coconut Grove Boat Yard and his father’s citrus grove and real estate holdings. Although by 1923 the Florida land boom was in full swing, with real estate prices skyrocketing in a flurry of northern investment, Dick Rice maintained the Flagler Grove as a profitable working citrus grove throughout the 1920s. Rice hired Bahamians to pick fruit who were paid by the box. Asa Smith, a leader in the Coconut Grove Bahamian community, worked for the grove for 40 years and could look at a grove and accurately estimate the size and quality of the fruit, as well as how many boxes could be picked. Asa was responsible for gathering the harvesting crews together each season to pick the 70 acres by hand. When the Great Hurricane of ’26 arrived in September of that year, the town was destroyed, the boom had turned to bust and Miami had a threeyear head start on the Great Depression. After the storm, Rice and Smith had the unpleasant task of resetting all 7,000 grapefruit trees, with the aid of a carload of two-by-fours. Fiftythousand boxes of unripened fruit lay rotting on the ground, unfit for sale. In the depths of the Great Depression in 1933, Dick and Naomi Rice moved into the Hinson House in Flagler Grove with their four children, Dick Jr., Billy, Ruth and Bobby. Naomi pulled some strings with a friend whose husband worked for FP&L and had electricity brought into the home. In addition to the wholesale business, the Rices ran a roadside fruit

stand from the property, and Naomi sold decorative boxes with a jar of homemade guava jelly in each box. They did a brisk business, especially during the tourist season. Dick Rice tried his hand as a restaurateur, opening the Village Barn Grill in a log cabin style building and serving such specialties as squab, frog legs, and lobster from Italian and French chefs. Unfortunately, customers could not be convinced to travel so far south of the city for gourmet fare. Just as the trees were recovering from the 1926 storm, the Category 5 Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 hit Islamorada, decimating Flagler’s railroad to Key West and undoing all of Rice’s grove restoration. The weary family offered Flagler Grove for sale at $30,000, but in the depths of the depression, got no offers. In January 1937, the Grove was finally sold to Realtor Kenneth S. Keyes of the Keyes Company, who created Flagler Grove Estates, Inc., developing it into small groves and home sites with twobedroom, one-bath homes on acre lots for $5,750. Under the motto, “The Gateway to Better Living at Lower Cost,” Keyes promised in his 1941 brochure that, “Here are ideal country home sites that offer you breathing space, privacy and, above all, economical, happy living. The land is high and the soil deep and exceptionally fertile. Here you can raise flowers, vegetables, avocados, limes, mangos, oranges, grapefruit and other tropical fruits. Several homes have already been built by people you would be glad to have as neighbors.” The site of the Hinson Home was sold to zoo animal broker, Alton V. Freeman in August 1938 and was transformed from pioneer home and packing house into a world-famous tourist attraction, Miami’s Rare Bird Farm. Dr. Scott Kenward practices general dentistry in Pinecrest and is a lifelong resident of the Village. He may be contacted through his website: <www.pinecrestdental.com>.

It’s a jungle out there but it doesn’t have to be a 3-ring circus BY KELLY CRAIG The long day was finally winding down. Tensions were high as drivers did their best to navigate the roads filled with beggars, sweaty street vendors and even women balancing clay pots on their heads. Where was I? The chaotic streets of Cairo? Nope. I was sitting in rush-hour gridlock at South Dixie Highway and 136th Street in Pinecrest. Okay, I might have stretched it a bit with the women and their clay pots part. But there is a Home Depot right at that corner, and they did have a sale on huge terra cotta pots last week. If you had to haul three of them to the other end of the parking lot, where else would you put the third one if not on top of your noggin? Okay, yes, it was me. I forgot a cart, okay? If you ever try this, buy the Styrofoam kind that only resembles clay. It’s much more scalp friendly, and no mess to clean up if you lose your balance like I did. When did that intersection turn into a microcosm of our culture? There is no better sociology lesson than at that very spot for those with the patience to observe. That very spot is a dividing line between Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay and The Falls. The division, it seems, isn’t limited to mere geography. First, let’s tackle the courtesy issue. Westbounders on 136th Street know that it’s impossible to hit a green light during the evening rush, so typically a gap is formed for those in the opposite lane to turn left into the parking lot of Bank of America. The fun begins when

Life With kelly motorists exiting the parking lot south of traffic take advantage of the gap and horizontally block all four lanes in order to make a right at the light. This perpetual scene is particularly entertaining because I can read lips. It’s really eye-opening to “see” what infuriated drivers say when they think no one is watching. Now, let’s address the group of pedestrians I’ll call “The Bucket People”, those omnipresent folks who think nothing of walking into stopped traffic and squeezing in between cars to collect spare change. Now, I’m all for charity. In fact, I would have no beef at all if only the “BPs” would abide by the law and stay on the sidewalks and medians. I guess they can’t resist four lanes of sitting ducks or, depending on your point of view, sitting schmucks. I’ve seen some of them go from lane to lane in leaps that would shame Baryshnikov just to get to an outstretched buck. It’s all allowed, according to police, if the workers are part of a registered charity or if a panhandler spends his earnings on necessities rather than a six-pack. So, it’s legal. Safe it’s not. Speaking of distractions, how about those other guys competing for your discretionary spending: Street vendors. Most recently at 136th and the Highway, I had my choice of a dozen roses for five bucks or for the discounted price of only three dollars, a sack of limes. The vendors stood elbow-to-elbow with The

BP’s, but maintaining the separate-butequal doctrine; both groups glided between cars as if Balanchine himself had choreographed it. Provided the seller has a county-issued mobile vendor’s license it’s legal. But just one misstep in front of a moving car and the term “mobile vendor” could very easily take on an entirely different meaning. Don’t think I’ve left out the pitfalls on US 1. There’s a bus-stop on the northwest corner and many who work on the east side of the highway often tempt fate by playing the role of Hoppy in a real-life version of “Frogger.” And now to the granddaddy of all of my pet peeves: Teenagers who take to the streets, hustling drivers to support their cheerleading/football squads. What kind of message do parents teach kids by condoning the idea of begging for recreational funds? Most importantly, these parents are endangering their children’s lives. A freckled-faced cheerleader recently approached my vehicle and asked for change. I told her that I would gladly give her a sizable sum if

she and her friends would leave the street and instead hold traditional fundraisers. She tilted her head like a puzzled cocker spaniel and walked away. There, just inches away from moving cars, she climbed onto the shoulders of her male counterpart and did a back-flip onto the street. I was dumbstruck as I looked around for parental supervision. I spied two women on the sidewalk, just chatting and laughing it up. A Pinecrest police officer later told me he saw the same acrobatics and ordered the squad to leave. This is one activity at U.S. 1 and 136th that not only is dangerous, but also is outlawed. It really is a jungle out there, but it doesn’t have to be a three-ring circus. Let’s be smart and work together to ensure that a clay pot is the worst thing to get broken at a very busy and volatile intersection.

ranks No. 1 in Miami-Dade County BY JANIS R. EHLERS U.S. News & World Report, the prestigious news and consumer magazine, has ranked The Palace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Kendall as the top nursing home in Miami-Dade County. The community, owned and operated by The Palace Management Group, one of South Florida’s leading companies specializing in senior housing and care, was compared to nine other facilities throughout the county. The report, “America’s Best Nursing Homes,” was created by U.S. News & World Report to help the families and friends of the 3.2 million Americans who will spend at least some time in a nursing home. “The new rankings are built atop the data and rankings found on Nursing Home Compare, a federal website created by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS),” reported Avery Camarow in the Mar. 11, 2009 posting of the data. “The agency collects and analyzes information on more than 15,000 nursing homes that accept Medicare or Medicaid residents and rates the facilities on numerous measures from safe food preparation to the amount of nursing care per resident.” The Palace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center received five stars in the overall rating, health inspections and quality measures categories and four stars in nurse staffing. “Being recognized by U.S. News & World Report is validation that we are excelling at serving our area seniors and their families,” said Helen Shaham, president of The Palace Management Group. “It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees.” In December 2008, the community also received the five-star rating — tops in the nation as selected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, the federal

administrative support agency for the 65and-older U.S. citizen. Health inspections included approximately 180 care aspects, judged during on-site visits by trained inspection teams that check quality, review medical records and individually interviewed residents. Lily Patterson, former administrator of The Palace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center who now manages the company’s Palace Renaissance and Royale assisted living communities, said the recognition is an acknowledgement of the team effort that is required. Emphasis was placed on training and education as well as in staffing — which exceeded the required staff to patient ratio — wound care and rehabilitation. Last year the community underwent an extensive refurbishment and new, state-ofthe-art equipment was installed. Additionally, services were expanded to include a specialization in orthopedics and opening the center to the general public for outpatient services such as physical, occupational and speech therapies. In addition to the Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, The Palace’s continuum of care includes The Palace Suites, a luxurious independent living community; The Palace Royale, a “catered living” community; The Palace Renaissance, an assisted living community; The Palace Gardens, an assisted living community in Homestead; The Palace at Home, a Medicare-certified home health agency; The Palace at Weston, luxury living for those 55 and over, and Palace TelAviv, a continuing care retirement community in Israel. Just 57 percent of students graduate after six years of college. That’s a statistic from the U.S. Department of Education that’s hard to believe, yet all to true. And the attrition rates are dramatically higher for nontraditional learners, those with learning disabilities and special academic needs. By law, postsecondary institutions must accommodate students with learning challenges. Because schools provide varying degrees of educational support, the vast number of educational options can overwhelm even the best intentioned parent. Robin Wolfe, of Wolfe Educational Consulting, helps take the mystery out of the school selection process. With 20 years in the communications field, a Master’s Degree in Education from New York University and a Post Master’s Certification in Student Life and Development from the University of Miami, Wolfe says her mission is to help find the right educational fit for each student. “If you believe it is crucial for your son or daughter to make a successful transition from high school to college,” Wolfe said, “then write an excellent college application and essay and choose a school that makes the best fit for your student. “The optimal post secondary choice, one where a student can find social and academic achievement, will help a young person develop and reach their potential and beyond. A good college choice will enable your student to feel good about themselves, develop a sense of self efficacy, a feeling that they can do it, build their career skills and ultimately function as an independent, productive citizen.” Wolfe is no stranger to the challenges of college selection. Dealing with her three sons — the eldest at Tufts University, another at the University of Arizona and the third a junior in high school — has helped her develop insight into the way education can affect a child’s self esteem, interactions, academic expectations and family dynamics. “Two of my sons were diagnosed with learning disabilities at an early age,” said Wolfe. “Since disabilities are frequently genetic, I was on the lookout after my first son was diagnosed. We were fortunate to develop an excellent cache of professionals — child neurologists, psychiatrists and psychologists – we could turn to for advice. Finding the right medicines and optimal academic environments was a challenge; the stress affected every family member.” When it came for college, Wolfe, like many parents, and her son were not satisfied with the guidance they received in high school. “My son wanted to go out of state, experience a whole new environment and start fresh,” Wolfe said. “It became a

mission and we focused on college application and selection over Christmas break of the senior year.” They researched schools, chose seven possibilities, visited three and ended up selecting the University of Arizona and their SALT (Strategic Alternative Learning Techniques) center because of the one-on-one tutoring, learning technology and total academic support it provided. Wolfe learned first hand about how to research schools with the right support, how to apply with LD, and the importance of self-advocating in college. “The most successful student is one that can verbalize their disabilities, knows their learning style and can communicate this to teachers in order to get the assistance necessary to achieve,” Wolfe said. “All college retention research points to three critical factors for success in college: Finding one good friend, developing a relationship with a faculty member and being involved in school activities.” At UA, Wolfe’s son took a smaller, more manageable course load, became involved with a fraternity, used the SALT center for tutoring and thrived. He worked part time at his Tucson apartment complex in marketing and is currently engaged in a summer internship in the sales and marketing department of a New York hotel chain. “My heart swells when I hear the happiness in his voice,” Wolfe said. “To quote my grandmother, ‘Nothing succeeds like success.”’ Wolfe says she finds it personally motivating to experience a young person’s achievements and witness the happiness it brings. “Nothing is more gratifying than seeing someone find their passion and feel good about who they are and what they do in life.” For more information about Wolfe Educational Consulting, call 305-7048131 or email <rkpcpom@aol.com>.

Guys get sports privileges; what about the girls? BY COURTNEY WOOD “Sports activists say schools across the nation may be in violation of federal law by accepting donations from sportsrelated corporations,” writes Julie Sabatier of The New Standard. As some women know, in 1972 a law now commonly referred to as Title IX banned gender discrimination in school athletics. Even with Title IX, high school girls have to pay for their equipment even though many high schools accept donations from athletic corporations for boys’ sports apparel and equipment. “There are no public statistics available on how many high school sports teams are sponsored by private companies,” Sabatier notes. Some Florida schools contract with sponsors such as Nike, Adidas and other sports corporations. Normally the school has to equally distribute the sponsorship to all of its sports teams. Some schools elect to allow sponsors for only the boys’ teams. The schools’ choice on monetary distribution has been traditionally granted in favor of the boys’ programs, despite the high rankings the girls programs get, forcing girls’ athletics to raise money for equipment in other ways. A Miami high school student told me in an email exchange that for the past three years she has been playing softball and soccer at her school. She said the boys are sponsored by a major corporation, but the girl’s soccer team hasn’t been given any sponsorship aid, even after the girls made district playoffs. “It’s annoying because the guys don’t realize how privileged they are to even be sponsored,” she wrote. “They’re used to

All Floor Samples

DRASTICALLY

REDUCED!

SPORTS TALK it; when we girls would give anything to be sponsored by a major corporation.” So, armed with her comment, which stuck with me for a long time, I decided to email a few of my guy friends from a central Florida high school. I asked them how they would feel if they knew their school did not distribute corporate sponsorship money to its girls’ teams and only gave it to the boys’ teams. Surprisingly, one guy said he was shocked that a school would do that. “Why would a school do that?” he asked. “In my school, girls’ sports are just as important as boys’.” I felt a little better that day. I’m guessing that he doesn’t know how this usually plays out; maybe he simply doesn’t know that his team is sponsored. At least he had the right answer. Statistically, more and more girls do get the experience of playing a sport in their high school, but it’s not as memorable an experience when they have to pay for their equipment during the season and figure out ways to raise money. If you are a female athlete, ask your athletic director if your school has a major corporate sponsor. Ask them to explain how the sponsorship is distributed to the girls’ sports programs; and good luck! High schools have to wake up because they could be in violation of federal law that bars them from accepting donations from sport corporations, then distributing the funding unevenly it to its school teams. After all, it’s 2009 not 1909!

The Way to A Man’s Heart Is Through His Stomach and The Way to Residents’ Hearts Is Through Great Dining Experiences BY KERRY GREEN MIAMI—Innovative retirement communities are dispelling the old-fashioned stereotypes of seniors and dining. As in any fine restaurant where gourmet dishes and appearances by the chef— dressed in crisp white toques—are expected, chefs at senior living communities are now raising the bar to meet residents’ growing demands. “Dining continues to be a common concern for many older adults moving to a senior living community,” said Helen Shaham, President of The Palace Management Group, one of South Florida’s leading companies specializing in senior housing and care. “Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner, the dining experience can often be the highlight of the day. It’s the time when residents gather to socialize and exchange stories with friends and neighbors. And, nothing goes with great conversation like a great dining.” At The Palace, the first step in creating memorable dining experiences for residents is the selection of chefs with extensive culinary backgrounds. Alon Hershkowitz, the executive chef for The Palace Renaissance and Royale Assisted Living Communities, offers a wealth of knowledge and talent, having worked at several of the most luxurious hotels and country clubs including The National Hotel in Miami Beach. Under his culinary guidance, Assisted and Catered Living residents enjoy fine dining which rivals some of the best gourmet restaurants. He marries their desire for comfort foods such as traditional meat loaf and brisket with his flair for creating French, Italian and Mediterranean specialties. As people age, they experience a natural decline in their senses of taste and smell. Chef Alon compensates by increasing the intensity of the dish’s flavor and aroma with fresh, roasted garlic and special sauces and purees. “Dining has to be both enjoyable and healthy,” said Chef Alon. “We understand the need for limited to almost NO sodium & sugar intake and use no-salt seasonings such as Mrs. Dash. We also offer a wide variety of sugar-free desserts.” Chef Alon along with our Gabriel Garrido, the Food Service Director at The Palace Suites, a luxury independent living community, believe there’s always a reason for a celebration and have cre-

ated themed dinners throughout the month to heighten residents dining experiences. “Palace residents are well traveled and have very high expectations,” said Garrido, who has been with the company for over 10 years. “Employees get their greatest satisfaction from seeing residents happy; therefore, we go above and beyond to exceed these expectations while shattering the stereotypes of dining at a senior living community.” The Renaissance and Royale residents enjoy specialty dinners twice per month. Past themes have included German, Asian and Mediterranean. Suites’ residents enjoy gourmet dinners on Thursday nights with menu items including filet mignon and shellfish. Also, the Suites’ Happy Hour is kicked up a notch regularly, featuring an international theme and small plates from the region along with complementary entertainment. Recently themed Happy Hours have included a Spanish Tapas event featuring over 20 different appetizers along with flamenco dancers and an Italian Antipasto Party with over 15 delicious offerings including proscuitto di parma with fresh tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella. Holidays and special occasions are yet another way The Palace communities make the dining experience special. The Palace Suites recently set a record when it hosted the largest Mother’s Day brunch buffet for over140 residents and their families in addition to hosting a myriad of unique brunches throughout the year including a Sunday Gospel Brunch, a Country Western Brunch, an Oktoberfest Brunch, Father’s Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Xmas Day & Hanukkah buffets, and more. Residents also have opportunities to voice their opinions about the dining experience at The Palace. In addition to talking with the Chef as he visits their table every dinner to solicit feedback, they can share their thoughts during the monthly Resident Council meeting or write their comments in the Palace biannual Resident Satisfaction Surveys. Our chefs and dining room mangers take other steps to further maximize resident dining satisfaction. White linen tablecloths adorn each table and are accented by fresh flowers. Residents also enjoy a glass of wine and freshly baked bread (baked in-house) with dinner, and the young wait staff is educated daily about the Menu, the Daily Specials

& their ingredients and how they should be served. “It’s not simply about food on a plate,” said Chef Alon. “It’s about service. The dining experience begins even before the server arrives at the table; personal service is paramount. Here, the dining staff knows residents by name and anticipate their preferences.” Chef Alon has launched an engaging, interactive cooking show too. Twice per month, he prepares dishes such as stir fry vegetables, soups and meatballs, taking residents through the food preparation process and cooking stages. Donned in aprons and hats, residents cook along, and eagerly look forward to the finished product. “The Palace chefs don’t simply make meals, they make the entire dining experience incredible,” said Shaham. “Our food services satisfaction surveys are extremely high and residents take great pride in inviting their friends and family for dinner.”

Helen Shaham and her husband Jacob have been operating Senior Living Communities for the past 30 years. The Palace Suites in Kendall is a luxury Independent Living Community for active seniors. In addition, The Palace at Kendall campus is home to two Assisted Living Residences and a Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. They also operate The Palace Gardens Assisted Living Community in Homestead, Homestead Manor Nursing Home and The Palace @ Home, a Medicare Certified Home Health Agency. Their two newest projects are The Palace at Weston – Luxury Living for Those 55 and Over, and The Palace TelAviv, a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Israel. They have two communities under development – The Palace at Weston Senior Living and The Palace at Coral Gables, Independent & Assisted Living. Beth Am Temple Talk TREASURES for children BY JOY SCHANDLER Religious School Director Judaism is a treasure. I’ve know this since I was a child. I was the kid who loved religious school. I felt I learned important things there. I learned about values, good deeds, about making the world a better place. I learned Hebrew, fell in love with Israel, and delighted in the sights, sounds and smells of all of the holidays. The teen years rolled around and I came to love Judaism in an even deeper way. Each time I studied a section of Torah or mastered a prayer, I felt I was learning about life, about creating a life of meaning. Though I loved learning social studies, science and English literature, it seemed that Jewish learning was the stuff of life. It’s what mattered most. Fast forward. It’s no surprise that I’ve made my life’s work all about Jewish education. As Head of the Religious School at Temple Beth Am, my days are filled with teaching children, teens and adults and creating ways for students to engage with the treasure that is Judaism. This year, after a successful pilot pro-

gram, we are pleased to introduce to the community a new learning option- the T.R.E.A.S.U.R.E.S. of Judaism for Children. T.R.E.A.S.U.R.E.S is an acronym for the goal of the program: to engage students in Torah, Ritual, Ethics, Awareness, and Spirituality in a Unique Rich Environment. This program is open to all children in kindergarten through fifth grade and young teens in sixth through eighth grade who are not presently enrolled in Jewish day schools or religious schools. Temple membership is not required. Through active, experiential learning, students explore the treasures found in the holidays, values, Biblical narratives and much more. This is the perfect program for parents who want to introduce their children to Judaism but are not interested in the weekly religious school format or are not yet ready or interested in joining a congregation. T.R.E.A.S.U.R.E.S. meets on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m.-Noon and runs for two fiveweek sessions; one in October and another in February/March. Students can attend one or both sessions as the curriculum differs for each. T.R.E.A.S.U.R.E.S is open to the community and financial assistance is available. The staff of looks forward to greeting you in the fall.

Nora Olarte felt like her head was going to explode. Her body became numb, and she was fearful of having a stroke. Olarte had reason to worry: Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability and the third leading cause of death according to the National Institutes of Health. Olarte was rushed to the Aventura Hospital emergency room. Neurosurgeon Santiago Figuereo, who takes emergency department on-call duty at Aventura Hospital, knew he had to act quickly. Dr. Figuereo is specially trained to quickly diagnose and treat patients who are brought to the emergency department where he performs unique, state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgeries of spine and brain disorders not currently available in South Florida. Dr. Figuereo was notified immediately and was even able to view Olarte’s MRI scan from his computer at home. Upon review of the scan, he diagnosed a bleeding in Olarte’s brain and had her prepped for emergency surgery to remove the blood clot from her brain. “With emergencies involving the brain and spine - such as strokes or aneurysms – it is essential that we respond quickly,” said Dr. Figuereo. “Response time can make the difference when cutting the risk of death or permanent disability. Many stroke patients don’t get the chance to fully recover because they are not treated quickly enough.” Olarte had a rupture of a blood vessel in her brain, which led to a brain bleed. If the bleeding was not caught and

Dr. Santiago Figuereo ––––––––––––––––––––––

treated in time she would have been permanently paralyzed. She has now recovered and is living a normal life. “I was having a stroke and half of my body was paralyzed,” said Olarte. “If it weren’t for the quick response time of Dr. Figuereo, I could have been permanently paralyzed.”

Miami Neurological Institute offers minimally invasive, state-of-the-art procedures for disorders of the brain and spine. Dr. Santiago Figuereo was an assistant professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and was neurosurgery division chief at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Medical Center. He is now on staff at several Miami-area hospitals. For more information, visit <www.miamini.com> or call 786-623-2000.

Gus Machado Ford celebrates 25 years and a new location BY LEE STEPHENS It has been quite a year for Gus Machado Ford – the company marked a quarter-century of doing business in the county and recently took over the World Ford location in South Miami-Dade, rechristening it with the Machado name. Ford Motor Co. commemorated the dealership’s 25 years of serving South Florida from its Hialeah location, 1200 West 49 St., by presenting Machado and business partner Victor Benitez with a congratulatory plaque. “It feels very good to be honored in this way,” said Machado, adding that he was equally excited about the opening of the new Kendall dealership, 15551 S. Dixie Hwy., in Palmetto Bay. “North, south, east or west, we’re just 10 minutes from you,” said Benitez. “It’s a great location and a great market. The two locations will enable us to better serve our customers. Many view this as a very gutsy move on our part. We see it as a tremendous opportunity and one that will pay off down the road.” Machado purchased the Hialeah dealership in 1984 and over the years the business has been recognized as the number one Ford dealer in Miami-Dade and has consistently ranked among the top 25 Ford dealers in the United States. For the last seven years, Gus Machado Ford has achieved Blue Oval Certification status from Ford Motor Company in recognition of its high-level operating standards and commitment to customer service. “We are known for our great service,

especially in our parts and service department,” said Machado. “It has always been our philosophy to treat the customer right and that has been the key to our survival.” In 2003, the Machado dealership achieved its highest honor when it was given the President’s Award recognizing it as one of 450 dealerships out of 5,000 in the U.S. and Canada to provide exceptional sales, service and customer

satisfaction. This year, the company was presented with the Partners in Quality Award for its ongoing commitment to excellent customer service. Gus Machado Ford has also been recognized by Ford Motor Company with a Salute to Dealers nomination for its compassion and dedication to community causes. “We’re looking forward to supporting the communities in the Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest and Kendall areas,” said Benitez. He noted that Gus Machado Ford of Kendall has retained about 98 percent of the original employees, including general manager Mark Hoppe. “The people in this location are great and it’s important to the stability of the business to have them there,” said Benitez. “Customers are very happy to see all of the same service advisors and familiar faces at the dealership when they visit.” For more information, go to <www.gusmachadoford.dealerconnection.com> or call 305-820-2525 in Palmetto Bay and 305-822-3211 in Hialeah.

About a month ago, on a Saturday afternoon (where was he until then?), he appeared wrapped around the base of a bar stool, a black snake about two-feet long. We had divine intervention. The doorbell rang and on my way to the door I spotted it. The visitor was a friend, a police officer with Palmetto Bay who stopped in to visit. When she saw the snake, her comment was, “I don’t like snakes.” I suggested calling for back up and the snake slithered out of sight. Following a 25-minute search, we found him in the corner near the patio door where our “savior” shooed him outside. Have not seen him since, or any others, but I keep looking. Have lived here since 1955 and I am ready to move back to MN out of the tropics! By the way, we miss you on Channel 6. You were one of our favorites. Good luck to you and will be looking for more of you in the newspaper. Sincerely, Joyce Langley

ACUPUNCTURE The Point of Well-Being

August 3 - 16, 2009

What is Acupuncture? Acupuncture is traditional Chinese medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years and is still a primary form of healthcare today. How can it help me? When certain imbalances occur, as they do with all of us, then there are symptoms that can be as simple as feeling tired or as complex as chronic conditions. Acupuncturists use a variety of methods to restore balance within the body. Can I have an Acupuncture treatment and take medication? Absolutely, acupuncture does not interfere with medications and can often help reduce the side effects that some medications cause. Is Acupuncture safe? For your comfort and relaxation, our acupuncturist only uses FDA approved, sterile acupuncture needles that are used only once, thin as a human hair and virtually painless when inserted into the skin. Is one enough? To treat a condition and maintain a healthy body, we normally recommend a course of treatments based upon an individual’s symptoms. Is the Elemis Acupuncturist qualified? Our acupuncturists are certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) and are licensed by the State of Florida.

Pacific Intercultural Exchange (PIE) is looking for caring families to host high school students from various countries for the 2009-10 academic year. PIE asks local families to consider showing one of these foreign teens what American generosity is all about. Students from many countries have been staying with families all over the United States since August, and now a new group of international neighbors would like to add a little more to the community and leave with American passion, pride and sense of values. There is no such thing as a typical host family. Whether you are a single

parent, retired, have small children, teens, or no children at all, anyone can have a great experience hosting an exchange student. All students are prescreened. They speak English, have medical insurance, and their own spending money for any incidental costs. All these students require is a loving family to share their experience within our beautiful country. Help them learn the meaning of “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” PIE is looking for host families in your area. Those who are interested are urged to contact Pacific Intercultural Exchange right away at 1-877-534-3144. Experience is not necessary, as an orientation and support will be provided.

2010 Volvo XC60 aims at new generation of buyers Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Volvo hit a home run with the XC90 sport utility vehicle; they’ve done it again with the new XC60. The 2010 Volvo XC60 is a new entry in the Small Premium Utility segment, one of the fasting growing markets in the auto industry. It has beautiful styling, all the latest safety technology, outstanding comfort and dynamic performance, and it was designed to capture a new generation of Volvo buyers, while retaining those already loyal to the brand. The XC60’s styling blends a muscular lower body with a sporty coupe-like cab. A new trapezoidal grille holds an enlarged Volvo logo and a strong shoulder line blends into the rear liftgate flanked by LED taillights. The XC60 is available in only one model, the T6 AWD. It’s powered by a 3.0liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 281 hp and 295 pounds-

feet of torque. Power is transferred to the ground via a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission and Volvo’s All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction. Oversize 18inch wheels (19 inches are optional) along with 9.1 inches of ground clearance enable the XC60 to cross terrain that would be impossible in a conventional passenger car. Enhanced Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) is standard, along with a new feature called Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) that allows for more stable driving when towing. The XC60 offers many new systems, including a driver support system aimed at preventing or mitigating collisions occurring at speeds of 19 mph or less. It utilizes a closing velocity sensor to help determine whether a collision is likely. Depending on the closing speed, City Safety will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the XC60 to help avoid a rear-end collision or lessen its impact. The XC60’s cabin reflects the design of the exterior, keyed an ultra-slim center control panel with an optional new integrated navigation screen that’s angled slightly toward the driver. The seats have

been re-designed Volvo’s first panoramic roof is optional and offers increased light and an open-air feeling with two laminated glass panels. The XC60 offers HD Radio as standard equipment, updating radio to digital quality. FM broadcast quality improves to the level of a typical CD, while AM broadcast quality is improved to the prior level of FM. The XC60’s standard high performance sound system includes AUX and USB inputs to allow connection and control of personal music devices such as iPods, memory sticks and other media players.

Sirius Satellite radio with a complimentary six-month subscription and Bluetooth hands-free phone interface also are standard. Audiophiles have a choice between the optional Dynaudio Premium Sound System with a 650-watt amplifier, 12 Dynaudio speakers and Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. He may be contacted by calling 305-662-2277, ext. 261, or by addressing email correspondence to <LetsTalkCars@aol.com>.
