ONE OF MIAMI’S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

New administration rolls out welcome mat BY CINDY LERNER Mayor, Village of Pinecrest I am thrilled and honored to have been elected Mayor of Pinecrest. As we usher in a new era, we are fortunate to have tremendous resources at our disposal. There are a lot of great things for us to build on. We’ve recently opened our new community center and Pinecrest public library, we are laying down water mains to establish the backbone for those residents who want to connect to county water (for those who do not, I have asked our attorney to file a petition with the county asking for waivers from mandatory hook-up for the lifetime of well owners who do not ever want to connect), and we have been left with a healthy reserve fund. This is not to say we won’t face challenges due to the national and state economic downturn. But, going forward, the Village of Pinecrest will be more fully utilizing and tapping into the wealth of knowledge of its own residents to problem solve together. My focus will be on communication and participation. By opening our government structures and processes to citizen participation, we will be moving our village government into an era of citizen engagement. It is clear to me that our village possesses tremendous additional resources that have never been tapped. We have an abundance of what I call intellectual capital; that is, our residents are extremely smart, talented, creative and energetic and it is about time we draw upon ourselves to create a true community spirit and energy to advance our wonderful Village.

BY LEE STEPHENS our Pinecrest community embarks on a new frontier with its first official community foundation established with the mission of promoting programs and initiatives that benefit the Village of Pinecrest community by creating and expanding relationships that foster philanthropy. Not only will the Community Foundation of Pinecrest (CFP) offer individuals and businesses a way to leave a lasting imprint on their Village, it will also provide residents and surrounding neighbors with a way to make a difference in their own backyard while realizing tangible benefits and community improvements. Since March, a group of philanthropic and community-minded residents and business leaders have convened to address the needs and concerns of our community. Converting the former

Pinecrest Foundation to a community foundation, the group has taken its first steps by electing officers. Attorney, Steve Beiley, of Adorno & Yoss, was elected to serve as the CFP’s inaugural chairman. Fred Baddour, of CRB Geological & Environmental Services, will serve as vice chairman, while the duties of treasurer go to Harry Hollub, of Hollub Homes, with civic leader Pam Schaefer taking on the role of secretary. Others currently serving on the CFP board are Kim Wood, Julie Goldman, Hank Langston, Marian Krutulis and Zeke Guilford. Others who have also contributed to the formation and vision of CFP are Grant Miller, Minnie Lauderdale, Leslie Bowe, Glenda Crawford and Jennifer Wollman. The CFP board has a broad range and expansive non-profit experience and business acumen needed to get this new endeavor off to a great start. CFP’s board will be reaching out to the community to

grow and fill advisory board positions. Resident will soon be offered a limited opportunity to become founding trustees that will forever etch their names in the history of this Village. CFP’s board has been convening on a regular basis several times a month at offices of CRB Geological & Environmental Services, where Fred Baddour has generously provided CFP with offices for as long as is needed and at no cost. The board has also been aided by Gloria Burns, who has worked closely with the board over the past eight months. Burns has contributed her fast insights and vision, which were forged over her 14-year tenure in the community foundation field, in addition to a background in advertising, marketing and special events. For more information, call 305- 9683090 and look for the CFP web site now under construction at <communityfoundationofpinecrest.org>.

Positive PEOPLE in Pinecrest

JILLIAN SIMON For the past two summers, Gulliver Prep senior Jillian Simon has traveled to remote parts of the world to learn about the environment and to help those in need. She made the first trip just before her junior year and went to Kenya with a student group called Global Roots. “I was looking for something to do over the summer,” Simon recalls. “I didn’t want to do a teen travel tour. I knew I wanted to go to Africa.” Simon searched the Internet for trips that fit her requirements and then spent a month studying brochures from various organizations before settling on Global Roots. “We were in the country for five weeks,” she says. “It was such an amazing experience.” The students decided as a group what they wanted to do to help a village called Shichinji where they would be staying. “There was no running water and no electricity,” Simon says. “Some of the houses were made of concrete, but they had no power or plumbing.” The group decided to build a computer lab for the local high school because they were told the school would soon be hooked up to electricity. “Computer literacy could be a lifechanging skill,” Simon says. “That’s a really important thing for them to have. These people had never seen a computer in their life.”

Before embarking on the trip, the students were supposed to raise money for the project, at least $100. Simon raised $1,300, but others collected $7,000 and $9,000. In all, they had $22,000 to complete the project, which allowed them to build the computer lab from the ground up and provide seven computers. Even so, they also used left-over money to create a small infirmary, which they stocked with basic medical supplies such as Advil, Neosporin and Band Aids. “We created scholarships for kids who had made it through primary school,” Simon says. “You had to pay for high school.” In all, they created 15 scholarships for students. This past summer, Simon traveled to Madagascar with Global Awareness in Action. “I learned about deforestation, which is the major problem in Madagascar,” she says. “Ninety percent of the flora and fauna is endemic and not found anywhere else.” But because of the needs of the people and the exportation of logs, coal and bamboo, the people of Madagascar employ slash and burn tactics to deal with the forests, which is detrimental to the environment. “This trip was different; it wasn’t so much about direct community service as much as learning about a problem, then coming back and analyzing it,” Simon says. “We started off in the capital city. It is the most polluted city in the world.” They studied the culture in the capital, then moved into more rural areas and into the rainforest where they stayed in a primitive village for 12 days. “The people here were more secluded than the people in Kenya,” she says. “Many had never seen white people before.” Simon and her group returned to Yale to present their findings about the environmental problems and discuss them with the students who visited other countries. At Gulliver, Simon does community service and participates in fundraising walks through clubs such as the National Honor Society. She also goes to the Humane Society on a regular basis to help out. She has applied for early decision to Vassar and also applied to Connecticut

College, the University of Miami and Sarah Lawrence. She hopes to major in creative writing and English. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

CHUCK WOODWARD Sixteen-year-old Chuck Woodward, a junior at Westminster Christian School, is working on plans for a shoe drive for the homeless called Save Our Soles. Although no longer class president – he was president of the freshman and sophomore classes – Woodward has not ended his commitment to community service. As freshman class president, he led his fellow students in staging a car wash to help the teachers at his school. The students went to school on a teacher work day and washed the teachers’ cars for them while they were working. As the sophomore class president, Woodward began working on the shoe drive. During both years, he also worked on Homecoming planning. “At Westminster, Homecoming is huge for the class president,” Woodward says. “From the class dance to getting tee shirt orders.” While he organized the shoe drive with the Student Council last year, this year he’s putting it together on his own, and this time with the blessing of the Dean of Students. He’s scheduling it to begin with the start of the new year and continue through January. “Last year we collected 400 pairs of

shoes for the homeless,” Woodward says. “I actually want to make this a school-wide thing. Last year it was just the high school.” The plan is to announce the project in chapel and then send out an email to the entire school, as well as post flyers. There will be collection boxes at the schools where students can drop their donations. Last year, Woodward took the shoes to his house and organized them by sizes and gender. When the drive was over, the shoes were taken to Camillus House. “This year I want to do a better thing with this,” he says. Last year, Camillus House representative indicated that sneakers are the most useful shoes to have donated, but Woodward says they took everything that people donated and they were all accepted by the homeless shelter representatives. Woodward hopes to broaden the drive this year and receive more shoes than last year’s 400 pairs. The initial shoe drive was Woodward’s idea. He says he decided to organize a shoe drive because he likes shoes and because he had a lot of shoes; so many, in fact, that he often gives shoes to his friend. So he decided to combine his interest in shoes with a community service project. Meantime, Woodward is also continuing his work on developing a school fishing tournament. “We couldn’t get it passed last year for different reasons,” he says. “This year it’s getting closer and closer. I would be one of the main supporters of a fishing tournament.” Woodward also volunteers his time at his church. He went on a mission trip to Grand Cayman last summer where he helped the church operate a vacation bible school in a poverty-stricken area of the island. Woodward is a starter on the Westminster basketball team and is captain of the volleyball team. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society. Last year, his work for the school was recognized when he won the Hugh O’Brian Leadership Award. As a junior he is starting to look at colleges and has visited Norte Dame University twice. SAMANTHA PARRISH When Hands on Miami wanted to start a youth advisory council, Palmetto High School senior Samantha Parrish was asked to help. Today Parrish is the presi-

dent of the youth advisory council and an expert in creating and executing volunteer projects. “We have partnerships with the United Way and other local organizations like the Miami Children’s Museum, Monkey Jungle and the Community Partnership for the Homeless,” Parrish says. Hands on Miami has been a force in Miami since 1994, but it wasn’t until 2004 that they decided to establish the youth program. Parrish was tapped to be a part of the start-up because her mother was a board member. She was a vice president in her sophomore and junior years and moved up to president for her senior year. “The youth advisory council meets once a month,” she says. “We discuss the youth program and how we want to manage it. The youth program is entirely youth led and youth driven.” It’s also large, with approximately 4,000 student members. At any given time, they have about 20 projects on the calendar for the students to choose from. “We have about 20 opportunities for members to go out and volunteer for twoand-a-half hours,” she says.

When students sign up to take part, they go through an orientation and are given a password. “Once you’ve attended an orientation and you get a password, you can do one project or 10 projects,” she says. “We have volunteers who have been doing it for years and do two projects a month.” Parrish says she spends approximately six hours a week on Hands on Miami projects. Some of the time is spent in meetings and some is spent on the phone finding new projects to work on and new agencies to work with. In the planning stages is Global Youth Service Day on April 25, 2009. Her agency has been awarded “lead agency” status. “We are committed to finding sites,” she says. “We need to engage about 600 volunteers that day.” There are also some ongoing projects, such as the Target Free Third Fridays, which is a day when children who would not ordinarily be able to go to the museum because of cost, are admitted for free. Four to six volunteers go to the museum’s library and pick out books to read to the children. “The children get so into it,” Parrish YS DA 0 PM N U :0 NS O4 OP E 0 T OM

says. “It’s so much fun.” For her work, she has been recognized for her work with a Presidential Service Award. Parrish says she also enjoys participating in school activities. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society and the English Honor Society. She is also the treasurer of Thespians, the honor society for drama students. Parrish has already been accepted to the University of South Florida. She also applied to Tulane and Emory and the University of Florida. She favors Tulane because of the volunteer opportunities in New Orleans. Second on her list is Oxford College at Emory University. “It’s a really interesting program they have going on,” she says. “The Oxford College only takes in freshmen and sophomores. You spend your freshman and sophomore years at Oxford and then go to Emory. They also have a program called the Bonner Leaders Program. You are matched up with a service organization in the community and you work with them.”

No job too big or small for Picture Perfect BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD James Mullis says he bought the Picture Perfect frame shop for his wife, but that she never worked there and he ended up quitting his job as a police officer to run the business. After 11 years, he agrees that it was a good move; so good that he recently moved the shop to a larger storefront in the Colonial Palms Shopping Center. Mullis says Picture Perfect uses design consultants to help customers pick the right mats and frames for their artwork. “We have more than 3,000 moldings to choose from,” he says. “We carry the entire spectrum of molding, from the low end to the high. We do custom framing, mirrors, and sports memorabilia.” Mullis says Picture Perfect personnel can help with the framing and also take care of hanging customers’ pictures if there is no one at home to do the work. “We’ll hang your artwork and mirrors or anything else that needs to be installed on your walls,” he says. “We deliver for our customers.” For those who want artwork for their walls, Picture Perfect sells original paintings, giclees and posters by local and

listed artists. Mullis says he is happy to work with decorators or interior designers. “We have a lot of commercial accounts,” he says. “If you want someone to come to your office or business and lay out the artwork and install it, we will do it. That is a big part of our business.” Mullis says Picture Perfect will help a company update its décor by updating the artwork or simply reframe the existing artwork in a more contemporary style. He adds that he has business clients who often want multiple pieces of art framed at the same time, and that’s not a problem. He says his workers pride themselves on providing great customer service. “We will come to a customer’s home and business if necessary,” Mullis says. “It doesn’t have to be something you purchased from us; we’ll still install it.” The shop also repairs damaged frames and installs new glass. “I’ve gone to Miami Beach for a glass change,” Mullis says. “We’ll do whatever is necessary, from picking up to dropping off.” If it is something that you did buy

from Picture Perfect, the goal is to have the piece ready and installed within a week. Even with the additional customer service, Mullis says he has market prices at his shop. “We carry the entire spectrum of molding,” he says. “We have a warehouse facility and we do all of our own work. We do some of the work on site at the store, and the larger commercial

12451 South Dixie Highway • Miami • 305.235.2852 BY JEANNETTE ALBO At 8:50 on a Monday morning, the new Pinecrest Elementary School Principal Marisol Diaz walks the halls, walkie-talkie in hand, greeting everyone with a smile as they walk by. Diaz replaced long-time principal Valerie Swanson and has been at the helm of the school since July. Diaz, 44, has worked in the MiamiDade public school system for 23 years. Before coming to Pinecrest Elementary, she was the Principal of Ludlam Elementary in South Miami for five years. She says she is excited about her new job. “I am honored to be at a school with such a great reputation for educational excellence and parental involvement,” she said as teachers and students began their school day. “I am motivated and excited for the opportunity to bring more to an already wonderful school.” In other words, Diaz knows she’s walking into a well-tuned establishment, but says there’s always room for improvement. While she acknowledges the school’s many strengths, she also recognizes the issues facing it. With the help of people like Kim Fairman, Pinecrest Elementary’s PTA president, Diaz has been briefed since the summer on the concerns that affect Pinecrest Elementary students. Diaz

cites the Miami Dade Public School System’s budgetary cuts as the biggest hurdle that the school will have to overcome this year. “The challenge will be to continue to offer all the great programs we offer at the school with less,” she said. Diaz plans to address the school’s reduced funding in part by continuing to rely on the financial and manpower support of parents through the school’s PTA. “First and foremost, I will work to ensure that the impact on our students is minimized,” she said. Diaz appears to be addressing those issues well. “She is eager to keep us informed and she always places her students in her decision-making process,” said Fairman. So far, Diaz is making a good impression on parents as well. “Pinecrest Elementary is fortunate to have another dynamic and conscientious leader,” said long-time Pinecrest parent Natalie Lemos. “Ms. Diaz strikes me as an extremely attentive and detail- oriented principal. She is very inviting and makes herself available to hear first hand the issues facing our school. I am completely confident that Ms. Diaz will continue the tradition of academic excellence at Pinecrest.”

The new Pinecrest branch of the MiamiDade County Library System offers a multitude of programs based on our mission. We strive to maintain and improve the informational, educational and recreational needs of our community. Two local volunteers who share this vision have made it a goal to enrich this library by establishing a monthly evening book discussion club. Germaine Butler and Patricia Kyle Lawrence have stepped forward and are rapidly attracting new members to this fledgling group. The inaugural meeting was held in early November. The core group of eight participants is the founders of the Pinecrest Garden Club. They have patiently waited for this facility to open and provide a communal gathering site for the sharing of ideas, opinions, likes and (of course) dislikes. The club is scheduled to meet the first Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. in the library’s spacious meeting room. It is originating as a “single-title” club. Participants will choose titles in a “round-robin” style and then discuss a particular title that every person in the group reads during the previous month. Since new “hot” releases are in heavy demand, books chosen are usually over a year old. The library can provide a borrowing copy to each participant. Members of the club decide future choices by a vote from a list of titles that are plentiful in the collection, so there will be sufficient numbers to give to interested new recruits. The person who suggests the title will be the moderator for the discussion. Library staff will assist the club with this process. The upcoming title for Dec. 3 is Sue Monk Kidd’s Secret Life of Bees followed on Jan. 7 by Julia Glass’ Three Junes. The Adults Department librarian, Gabriella “Gabby” Imbimbo, will provide research on the books, background on authors and any other information needed by the club. She will survey whether the library owns sufficient copies. Gabby will pursue thematic music or clips from a DVD documentary, and even pursue an author in order to enhance the ambiance and boost interest in the book’s subject. Sometimes, readers shy away from

Village Library book groups if they think that the books are too long or the subject does not interest them. The group will consider setting a page number limit to future books. They may split the book to discuss a portion of it at two meetings for larger books that members feel strongly about reading. Two library databases — Novelist and What Do I Read Next – provide comprehensive readers’ advisory solution for fiction lovers. Both online reference sources are available to library card holders from <www.mdpls.org>. Helping to answer the question of what to read next, they also profile award-winning titles, create recommendations based on likes and dislikes, and offer guides for book discussions, complete with questions. There are even suggestions from famous authors with listings of their favorites novels. Both Patricia and Germaine want a Zenlike evolution for the club, with multiple generations sharing books, songs and drama at the library. Future choices for upcoming books will be based on members’ tastes and their votes. The current members are open to any topic, including classics, sports and other non-fiction. They want the doors to be open to lead to broad-minded discussions. Discussing her love for reading, Germaine remembers certain phrases stuck in her memory from years past and how the author strung certain words together. “The descriptions stay with me,” she says. “There are a couple of books that never leave my bedside, I love them so much.” On one Saturday in the library, Patricia and Germaine signed up 22 potential new members. People stopping by to learn about the book discussion group began reminiscing about their favorite books. It was infectious. One woman said, “It’s not the book, it’s the content and where the author wants to take you.”

Ellen Book is the Pinecrest branch manager of the Miami-Dade Public Library, 5835 SW 111 St. To contact her or for more information, call 305-668-4571 or go to <www.mdpls.org>.

BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD For their bar mitzvah project, Jade Azari and Jessica Roth got together with friends and raised money through music. They coordinated a concert called Music Can Change the World at Temple Judea on Nov. 2 before family and friends. The girls go to the same temple and Hebrew school. They met each other through Roth’s best friend and became friends. They also share a music teacher, Dr. Greg Hoover, who helped them with the event. “We just started talking about what we were going to do,” Azari says. “We just started putting ideas out there and we came up with using our talents in a positive way. We both have musical talent. We decided to have a concert and invited our friends to play with us.” The proceeds from the concert will be donated to two charitable organizations. Azari, a Coral Gables resident, is donating to the World Wildlife Fund while Roth, who lives in Pinecrest, is sending her half of the money to the Diabetes Research Institute. Azari played the piano and cello. Her portion of the concert included a piano piece by Prokofiev, a duet with Maya Siman (who plays violin) of a piece by Evanescence, and a cello piece called La Cinquantaine. She also played a duet with Roth. The concerted ended with all of the musicians playing Sweet Home Alabama. Friends Sebastian Zel and Hunter Nash Glickman also played

in the concert. Azari’s bat mitzvah is scheduled for Jan. 31, but she and Roth decided to get the concert out of the way before the ceremonies. She decided to donate her portions of the proceeds to the Wildlife Fund because she loves animals and she’s concerned about global warming. “It seemed the perfect organization to donate money to,” Azari says. Roth’s decision to donate to the Diabetes Research Institute stems from her friendship with Lexi Greenwald, who has diabetes. “Whenever I see her take her blood, I feel bad for her and I feel lucky that I don’t have to do that,” she says. “I want to help her by donating to the Diabetes Research Institute in the hope that one day they will find a cure.” Roth says she and Azari invited their friends and families to the concert and many of them agreed to attend. She played Clocks by Coldplay, Piano Man by Billy Joel, Ride with the Tide by Janeen Yeager and the Great Escape by Randall Hartzel. “The four that I picked are my favorite songs to play,” Roth says. Roth says the concert could very well become an annual event, which will allow her to practice what she has learned organizing the first one. “I’ve learned how it is to coordinate other things with people,” she says. “And how it is to play a song with four other people. I also know how good it feels to be donating to a really good cause.”

A healthy baby starts with a healthy pregnancy BY DR. EARL GABB Did you know that approximately 6 million American women are pregnant each year? Of these pregnancies, approximately 4 million result in live births. Studies show that healthy mothers who receive good prenatal care are more likely to give birth to healthy babies. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, it is important to understand what you can do to increase your chances of having a healthy baby. Prenatal care refers to the medical care that women receive before and during their pregnancies. Prenatal care is more than just regular health care, it also includes education and counseling on good nutrition, physical activity, the birthing process and skills for caring for a newborn. Fathers and family members have an important role to play in these aspects of prenatal care. Prenatal care means that your doctor or healthcare provider can monitor for and identify any potential problems early on in pregnancy. Early treatments can prevent and cure problems during the pregnancy and at birth. It is important to know that babies of mothers who do not receive prenatal care are three times more likely to have low birth weight and five times more likely to die, compared to babies born to mothers who did receive prenatal care. A healthy pregnancy actually begins at least three months before a woman becomes pregnant. It is recommended that women of childbearing age get at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily. This amount of folic acid can be found in fortified breakfast cereals. Folic acid can also be taken in pill form as part of a prenatal vitamin supplement. Women should also consume a variety of folates, a water soluble B vitamin. Foods rich in folates include lentils, asparagus, spinach, black beans, orange juice (concentrate is best) and broccoli. Women considering pregnancy should also make sure they are properly vaccinated for diseases that could cause harm to a developing baby such as chicken pox or rubella. It is important that women get these vaccinations before becoming pregnant.

JACKSON HEALTH BEAT Maintaining a healthy weight and nutritious diet is also essential to a mother and baby during pregnancy. Make sure you are engaged in regular physical activity and try to do some form of exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. Ask your healthcare provider what kinds of exercise is safe for you to do as your pregnancy progresses. Do not smoke tobacco, drink alcohol, or use any kind of drugs, legal or illegal, that are not prescribed to you. Be sure to ask your doctor about taking any medication because certain ones can be harmful to the fetus. This includes herbal and “natural” products, too, because they can also cause side effects. Avoid hot tubs, saunas and x-rays while you are pregnant, and do not eat uncooked or undercooked meats or fish. Avoid or control caffeine in your diet; pregnant women should have no more than two servings of caffeine per day. Teas, sodas and chocolate often contain caffeine and count toward your daily caffeine limit. In addition, stay away from chemicals like insecticides, solvents, lead and mercury. Are teacher and guidance counselor recommendations in the same format and will they ask the same questions about the student? To answer your question, no, they are not all similar. There are as many ways to write about the student as there are questions and answers in any other thing in life. For example, from American University one of the questions is, “How long have you known the student and in what context?” The next one is very interesting; it asks, “What are the first words that come to your mind to describe this student?” Another one from American: “Has the applicant ever been found responsible for a disciplinary action at your school, whether related to academic misconduct or behavioral misconduct that resulted in the applicant’s suspension, probation or removal, dismissal or expulsion?” There is also a question on most student applications that asks the students the exact same question. This is the time for me to tell you to always tell the truth. If you have been suspended or expelled from school put it down. They’re always going to find out. Put it down, tell the truth; it’s done and over with. My second daughter has a boyfriend who will be lucky to get his GED. She now has decided to stay home and go to Miami Dade College or FIU. What can I do? This is not the first time that a reader has written and asked this question. Teenage hormones are difficult to fight. You need to be prepared for a rough road ahead. Keep talking, talking and talking. Be relentless and point out all the advantages that an out-oftown college will bring. Take several college visits. I know this is not easy and the costs of time and money are great. However, think of the consequences if you don’t. Your daughter may not finish school, may get pregnant, might marry someone who has a different view on all the values you hold dear. I feel strongly about this issue. If you need to borrow

money to ensure these college trips, please do. Once your daughter is exposed to a variety of college campuses, my gut feeling is that she may reconsider. Also, arrange for college tours led by university students. You will be in a group of other kids and parents. Hopefully the energy these students demonstrate will be contagious. Also, you can arrange for your daughter to visit for a college weekend. She will live in a dorm and have a “big sis” to show her the university. “Show” also means social life, frat parties, etc. Please feel free to call me at 305-238-7737. I would like the opportunity to talk with you and your daughter. Don’t worry if she has a major attitude problem. I see that everyday.

My daughter has an interest in attending Barnard College. Can you tell me a little about it? Barnard College is a liberal arts college that produces independent learners. Barnard is surrounded by Columbia University and students from Barnard are allowed to take classes and do research at Columbia. Barnard is set right in New York and is an all-women’s college. Barnard is one of the best liberal arts colleges. Tuition is approximately $34,000, and room and board is $11,000. Financial aid is based on a need as established by the Barnard Committee on Financial Aid. More than 53 percent of Barnard women receive some type of financial aid. Is it easy to get into George Washington? College isn’t easy to get into anymore. As far as George Washington is concerned, they received nearly 20,000 applications last year for about 2,000 available spaces. Most freshmen rank in the top 10 percent GPA of their high school. Thirty six percent of those who applied were offered admission. George Washington takes applications from over 40 countries and every state in the United States. Nonnative plants take a toll on natural systems BY RODNEY BARRETO Chairman, Florida Freshwater Fish & Wildlife Commission

South Florida has been invaded by aliens. No, I don’t mean those little gray beings from outer space. I’m talking about plants; nonnative plants. An estimated 10 percent of the thousands of nonnative plants in Florida are invasive, which are plants that pose a threat to our natural systems. With its subtropical climate and a rapidly expanding human population, Florida is especially vulnerable to invasion by nonnative species. Florida is listed along with Hawaii, California and Louisiana as one of the states with the highest number of nonnative species, both plants and animals. The South Florida region alone is home to more introduced plants than any other

region within other states. Although South Florida has been hardest hit by this invasion, the problem is statewide in scope. What makes matters worse is most people don’t understand what impacts these nonnative plants can have on Florida’s environment. Florida covers more than 34 million acres, with nearly 11 million acres of public lands. Invasive exotic plants have invaded approximately 15 percent of these public conservation lands, affecting an ecotourism economy valued at nearly $8 billion annually. Invasive nonnative plant species, with no control by their native diseases and predators, spread explosively and outcompete and replace vital native species on public and private land. These plants can then diminish wildlife habitat, decrease recreational resources and negatively affect the natural health and economy of the state. A number of populations of Florida’s rarest plants have

FWC REPOR T been lost because of this. Other invaders modify the way a natural habitat functions, for example, by changing water flow or by increasing fire frequency in habitats not adapted to fire. Once invasive plants become established, getting rid of them is difficult, if not impossible. Continuous maintenance is needed to sustain wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities while preserving native plant communities. Fortunately, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) does have a weapon in the fight against these nonnative plants. The Invasive Plant Management Section within the Division of Habitat and Species Conservation is the lead entity in Florida responsible for controlling invasive aquatic and upland plants on public conservation lands and waterways throughout the state. Florida’s aquatic plant management program is one of the oldest invasive species removal programs, with its beginnings dating back to the late 1800s. Combined with the upland program, the section oversees the largest invasive plant management program of its kind in the United States. The section also ensures that beneficial native aquatic plants in Florida’s ponds, lakes and rivers are protected. In addition, it ensures that the most costeffective and environmentally safe control methods are used. Now, let’s see if you’re contributing to the problem. The Invasive Plant Management Section has a top 10 list of the most unwanted invasive plants: melaleuca; climbing ferns; Brazilian pepper; cogon grass; Caesar’s weed; soda apples; lead tree; Australian pines;

coral ardisia and Chinese tallow. Do you have any of these invasive plants in your yard? People are the primary means of invasive species being introduced into the environment. When you’re landscaping, take the time to do some research and plant only native vegetation or replace the invasive or nonnative plants already in your yard. There are other ways you can help as well. For example, when removing your boat from the water, check boat trailers, boat hulls and propellers for plants. Rinse and remove aquatic plants or invertebrate hitchhikers such as snails. Don’t dump aquarium contents in lakes, canals or other water bodies. Have houseplants brought into the state inspected for potential pests, either by another state’s agriculture department or at a Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services inspection station. This is required by law, and fines for violations can be as high as $5,000. Check out <MyFWC.com/nonnatives/InvasivePlants/index.htm> <http://myfwc.com/nonnatives/Invasi vePlants/index.htm> for more information about nonnative species and how we’re attempting to combat the problem. With your help, we can control the invasion.

Expensive, cheap, skinny and fat Chef Jan OWNER, TWO CHEFS RESTAURANT

COOKING WITH JAN It seems that these times can only leave one confused and hungry. The stock market is down, gold is up and oil is somewhere in between. Or is it the other way around? I’s impossible to keep track. So here are a few ideas, depending on your day’s needs. THE EXPENSIVE Pan Roasted Halibut with Poached oysters and caviar 4x6 oz. halibut filets Olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 16 oysters (medium size; shucked with juice preserved) 2 oz. of caviar (I suggest American Sturgeon) 1 cup white wine 1 cup chicken stock Fresh thyme 1/2 stick of butter Fresh chopped parsley Season and saute the halibut in olive oil for about 4 minutes on each side, set aside. Place the oysters in a small sauté pan with the juices (you might add a small splash of white wine if needed). Bring to a simmer, remove oysters, add white wine and chicken stock, reduce to about 1/4 cup, strain, add fresh thyme and whisk in butter. Set aside until assembly. Assembly: Place a piece of halibut onto 4 plates,

reheat oysters in sauce without boiling, place oysters around each filet of halibut, ladle sauce around fish and oysters, place 1/2 oz. of caviar on top of each halibut, sprinkle with fresh parsley. Serve immediately. THE CHEAP Braised lamb shank with lemon-scented mashed potatoes 4 lamb shanks 2 onions 2 leeks 2 carrots 4 bay leaves Fresh thyme 8 cloves of garlic Whole black pepper Olive oil 2 cups of veal stock 2 cups of white wine Brown shanks in a roasting pot; root vegetables (cut into one-inch pieces) are browned in the pot as well; add thyme, garlic, black pepper, bay leaves, white wine and veal stock; cover and cook in a preheated 325-degree oven for about 2-2 1/2 hrs or until meat is done. Remove lamb shanks, strain sauce and bring to a boil, clean sauce from fat and foam, taste for salt and pepper. Pour sauce over lamb shanks and serve family style. Lemon-scented mashed Potatoes Make regular mashed potatoes using sour cream and milk, season with fresh lemon zest and chopped fresh garlic. THE SKINNY Seared Tuna Steak with Soy-scented noodles, fried banana and parsley pesto 4x6 oz pieces of fresh tuna loin (cut as steak)

Salt and pepper to taste Olive oil Sear tuna steaks on each side in a hot skillet. Set aside. 2 cups freshly cooked noodles of your choice (I like pappadelle pasta) 1/4 cup soy sauce Splash of sesame oil Thinly sliced scallions 1 Teaspoon of chopped garlic 1 Teaspoon of chopped fresh ginger 1 soup spoon of honey Juice from 1 lemon 1 soup spoon of fish sauce Mix all the above in a mixing bowl and set aside. Parsley Pesto 1 bunch fresh Italian parsley (or flat leaf, rinsed and dried ) 2 cloves of garlic 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil. Juice from 1 lemon 1 soup spoon pine nuts (toasted) 2 soup spoon of grated Reggiano Parmigiano Place all ingredients in a blender and pulse regularly until blended and smooth.. 4 bananas, cut in half length wise (with peel) Salt and pepper Olive oil Heat skillet, add olive oil, season bananas and let caramelize skin side up for about 4-5 minutes. To assemble: Divide noodles on to 4 plates, arrange tuna (sliced nicely on the bias) on top of noodles, spoon pesto on top of tuna and serve rest on the side. Fried bananas are served family style. AND THE FAT ONE Apple & Marcipan Strudel with

Crème Fraiche 4 sheets of filo dough 1 stick of butter (melted) 1 cup of fresh Marcipan (almond paste, very cold or frozen so it can be grated) 2 apples (Granny Smith, peeled, cored and diced) 2 tbs of sugar Splash of white wine Vanilla 1/2 cup raisins (golden) 4 spoons of Cuban dark rum 2 cups of Crème Fraiche Cinnamon 1 tsp of powdered sugar Juice from 1 lemon 1 egg, beaten. Filling - In a pot combine apples, sugar, white wine, vanilla, raisins, rum; cook for about 10 minutes until apples are tender; set aside. Arrange one sheet of filo dough on a the table, brush with melted butter, grate marcipan over sheet, repeat with remaining three sheets of filo dough. Cut filo dough into four pieces, divide apple compost onto each square of dough and roll them like a “spring roll”. Place on a baking sheet, closing down. Brush with the beaten egg and bake about 10 minutes at 325 degrees. Whip Crème Fraiche, cinnamon, powdered sugar and lemon juice smooth and serve next to apple – marcipan strudel. I hope that these recipes provide a little comfort or add some inspiration to a somewhat challenging and uncertain economy. Turnberry Bank Young Artists series begins BY BAY PROBY In the spirit of art appreciation and our youth, the Turnberry Bank Young Artists series was officially launched at the bank’s Pinecrest office earlier this month featuring 14 student artists from Gulliver Preparatory School. Approximately 50 people attended the affair, held from 6-8 p.m.

“We are delighted to showcase the talents of these young artists from Gulliver Preparatory School,” said Adam Hellman, Turnberry Bank vice president and Pinecrest branch manager. “We welcome everyone – customers and general public alike – to stop by and see the artwork.” The students’ artwork will be on display for the next three weeks in the bank office at 9579 S. Dixie Hwy. Student art exhibits

from other Miami-Dade high schools also will be hosted by Turnberry Bank at other office locations in Coral Gables, South Miami and Aventura. “Gulliver schools and the Gulliver Art Department are pleased to share the exemplary artistic works of our young artists with Turnberry Bank,” said Gulliver Schools provost Gloria Bracciano. “It is our hope that this display not only highlights the talents of our students, but will

brighten the days of the Turnberry staff and its customers.” “Exhibiting their artwork at the Pinecrest branch is a fantastic opportunity for Gulliver’s student artists,” said Laurie Deane, Gulliver’s Visual Arts Department chair. “The experience of displaying artwork in public makes it possible for our students to become more confident about their work and helps them view their work from a new perspective.”

Consolidating retirement savings offers benefits John Molkentin MONEY MATTERS A traditional IRA here, a rollover IRA there, four job changes (so far) and three retirement-plan account balances left in the plans of former employers. Over the years, you may have accumulated a significant sum in various retirement accounts. While keeping those assets in various accounts at different financial institutions isn’t necessarily a bad thing, there is a strong case for consolidating them into one account with the same financial institution. WHY CONSOLIDATE? Consolidating your retirement savings, where appropriate, offers several benefits including: • Comprehensive investment strategy — Over time, your investment objectives and risk tolerance may have changed. Thus, it can be difficult to maintain an effective retirement investment strategy — one that accurately reflects your current goals, timing and risk tolerance — when your savings are spread out among multiple financial institutions. Once you begin the consolidation process, you can choose investments that match your current goals and objectives. • Greater investment flexibility — Often, 401(k) plans or other employer-sponsored retirement programs (and even many IRAs) have limited investment menus. A self-directed IRA

like the one offered by Morgan Stanley generally offers you the ability to choose from a wide range of investments, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, managed accounts and more. • Simplified tracking — It is easier to monitor your progress and investment results when all your retirement savings are in one place. • Less paper — By consolidating your accounts, you will receive one statement instead of several. That simplifies your life while protecting the environment. • Lower costs — Reducing the number of accounts may result in reducing your account fees and other investment charges. • Easy-to-calculate Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) — Once you reach age 70, having fewer retirement accounts to manage means fewer RMDs to calculate every year. WHAT CAN BE CONSOLIDATED? Regardless of how many different types of retirement accounts you have or where they’re held, they may be eligible for consolidation, including: • IRAs held at financial institutions (banks, credit unions, mutual fund companies, etc.). • Retirement plan assets held at former employers, including, 401(k) plans, profit-sharing plans, money purchase plans, defined benefit plans, Keogh plans, ESOP plans, government 457(b) plans and 403(b) plans. Consolidating retirement savings is easier than you think. Depending on the types of retirement assets you want to consolidate, there are several ways to combine them into a single account: • IRA-to-IRA transfers — Ask the

IRA custodian where you will be establishing your account to help you complete their IRA-transfer paperwork. Once you’ve set up your IRA, the custodian will do the rest, including contacting your previous IRA custodian(s) to get your assets moved over. There’s no limit on the number of IRA-to-IRA transfers that you can complete in any given year. (However, please note that a Roth IRA can be consolidated only with another Roth IRA.) • IRA-to-IRA rollovers — You can ask your current IRA custodian to send you a check for the amount invested in your IRA. You will then have 60 days to deposit the funds into another IRA without incurring any current tax liability. Note that your former IRA custodian will report the amount as a distribution on IRS Tax Form 1099-R; your new IRA custodian will report the rollover contribution on IRS Tax Form 5498. If you miss the 60-day time period, taxes and penalties may apply. IRA-to-IRA rollovers are restricted to one every 365 days per IRA. • Direct rollover from qualified plan to an IRA — Ask your previous employer(s) about the paperwork needed to complete a direct rollover of your qualified retirement plan assets to your IRA. The assets will be transferred once you complete the paperwork. Note that your former employer’s plan will report the amount as a distribution on IRS Tax Form 1099-R; the IRA custodian will report the rollover contribution on IRS Tax Form 5498. • Indirect rollover from qualified plan to an IRA — Like the IRA-toIRA rollover, you can ask your previous employer(s) to send you a check

for your vested plan balance and then redeposit those funds into an IRA or other qualified retirement plan within 60 days. However, the plan trustee will be required to withhold 20 percent as mandatory federal withholding. You will need to make up that 20 percent when you redeposit the funds into an IRA or the amount withheld will be subject to taxes and possibly penalties if you are under age 59-and-half. Speak with your tax advisor about these and other rules that may apply when consolidating retirement plan assets. Notwithstanding the many benefits to consolidating your retirement accounts, there are also some caveats to keep in mind. For example, while many qualified plans allow for loans, you cannot take a loan from an IRA. Thus, once you rollover a qualified plan into an IRA, the ability to take a loan is no longer available. Another consideration is required minimum distributions. Upon reaching age 70-and-a-half, owners of a traditional IRA must begin taking required minimum distributions or face stiff IRS penalties. In some cases, qualified plan participants can delay taking required minimum distributions if they are still working. That said, combining your retirement assets in a single IRA can help you take control of your financial future. Your tax and financial advisors will be able to assist you in determining if consolidation makes sense given your specific circumstances and goals. But don’t wait any longer to find out. Your retirement will be here sooner than you think. For details, email me at <j.molkentin@morganstanley.com>.

“It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled. Americans sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states. We are, and always will be, the United States of America.” These the words of President-elect Barack Obama so eloquently described are a testament to the resolve of a previously disenfranchised American people. After a long hiatus from conveying my thoughts to all of you, I was able to observe how this country can be captivated by the words of political candidates across this country. What are these words? How about pondering what these words mean? Look closer into the depths of the multitude of speeches, and find that these words that transcend change, reform, new policies and a new beginning are actually a call to arms. No, not the typical constitutional right to own a weapon, but a call to act. What strikes me is the potential that was displayed by the public in recognizing the historical and future significance of a presidential election of this magnitude. Now, the only way potential is ever reached, is by the hard work and determination of the beholder. Basically, this country cannot function without the help of us, the public. The scary proposition is what will happen once the excitement of an election dies down and things will have to get done? As the political discourses of articulate candidates are spewed into the minds of the public, let’s take these words only for their face value. The problems that face us, the United States, are daunting and menacing. Yes, Barack Obama can provide a whale of a speech with his talent of bending the English language into a virtuoso performance of magnificent proportions. It does not matter what

OPINION party affiliation or race that we Americans belong to. What matters is the moral pride and ingenuity we have within ourselves and in the abilities of this country. Change is a scary thing and, believe me, I don’t like it half the time either. But in order for this country to fully live up to its name, we all need to become a synchronized machine, offering helping hands for the betterment of the country. There are many things that can be done to achieve this necessary task. For one, let’s ingratiate ourselves with all of the media outlets, and not just pin ourselves to the partisan discussion of only one. Clearly, the media had an incredible impact on this election, resulting in clouded American perceptions with biased insinuations of what may or may not be true. The mainstream media may not lie a whole lot, but they never tell the truth. So, broadening our interests and listening to the other side might be a sufficient way to go. Quite frankly, what direction are we going in if we can’t even work together? Unfortunately, the passion brought upon by this election has divided us like we have never been before. Well, if we can’t reach across “party lines” then let’s worry about the problems that we, as Americans, individually face. If everyone does one small thing to improve the way in which they live and benefit the country, then magnificent things can be accomplished. The common consensus I have been noticing is that the next several years in America will be scary and unpredictable. How about this for a change? Instead of leaving our lives in the hands of the people we elect, let’s take control of our time for the sake of ourselves, this wonderful community in which we all take part in, and this country, which is asking for our help, in every way possible. Pat Dean, ARNP, MSN, Clinical Coordinator of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH), has been honored by the Florida Hospital Association (FHA) as the 2008 “Hospital Hero of the Year.” FHA is an advocate of hospitals at a state and federal level on issues related to community service and patient care. Each year, the association recognizes individuals who are nominated by colleagues for contributions to the community and their hospital. Since 1984, Dean, a Kendall resident, has dedicated her life to children with epilepsy. “When a child is in the hospital’s neurological unit, Pat becomes their guardian angel and their trusted friend,” said Jackie Gonzalez, MSN, ARNP, senior vice president and chief nursing officer at MCH. “She reaches out on every imaginable level to advance care and quality of life for children with epilepsy.” At MCH, Dean provides hands-on patient care and parent counseling. She also sustains a recreational camp and support group for children and teens with epilepsy, which she founded almost 20 years ago. When not assisting patients and families, she conducts research, serves as a volunteer advocate at state and national levels, speaks at national and international conferences to expand understanding, and educates nurses on epilepsy. Dean currently is the president

Pat Dean

of the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida, an advocacy group for people with epilepsy. Founded in 1950 by Variety Clubs International, Miami Children’s Hospital is South Florida’s only licensed specialty hospital exclusively for children, with more than 650 attending physicians and over 130 pediatric subspecialists.

Tango’s — A European-style café & restaurant in Pinecrest

Tango’s is the brainchild of owners Frank Herman, his wife Bertha and her son Chris Diaz.

BY ROBIN KORTH Tango’s is the new ArgentineanEuropean style restaurant and café in Pinecrest. Modeled after the traditional carnicerias so popular in Argentina — relaxed and intimate, a place to meet and greet friends — Tango’s is a one-stop shop for every dining and catering need this holiday season and brings the warmth of Argentinean culture and cuisine to Pinecrest. This charming spot offers full-service dining, take-out, prime meats, cheeses, salads and side dishes, aromatic fresh breads and a wide variety of freshly made, preservative-free baked goods. Segafredo gourmet coffees and highly-prized Argentinean wines are also available to be enjoyed while sitting in the cozy dining area or to take home. Tango’s is the perfect spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It is a neighborhood spot where the owners meet and greet their customers, remembering their names and their favorite dish. Tapping into the multi-cultural basis of Argentinean cuisine, Tango’s is a delight to the palate and a place of “European” charm in the heart of Pinecrest. Tango’s is the brainchild of owners Frank Herman, his wife Bertha and her son Chris Diaz. The Hermans made their debut in the Pinecrest dining arena with Basil, a popular gourmet dining spot in the Suniland Shopping Center. “Our idea is to offer the gourmet meals that Basil was famous for in a relaxed, warm atmosphere,” says Frank Herman.

“I have always loved the carnicerias so popular in Argentina and wanted to bring this special experience to the residents of Pinecrest. The unique mix of Italian, Spanish and French that marks that country’s cuisine makes our menu diverse and fun. And, then there is Christian Scalia, our first-class pastry chef who has 25 years of restaurant experience. We have a winning combination of food, atmosphere, and convenience.” Tango’s is a local gathering place. A spot to come for a cup of Segafredo coffee, a sandwich, a take-home, change-of-pace dinner or meats, gourmet side dishes and fabulous tortes for that special dinner party. “Since all of our baking and preparations are done on the premises, special orders and custom requests are never a big deal,” says Frank Herman. Meanwhile, Bertha Herman is a vibrant part of Tango’s. “Think of it this way, you can enjoy a complete gourmet meal here that won’t set you back an arm and a leg and you can come dressed in shorts,” she says. Tango’s doors are open early and close late. Come visit and experience Argentina. Frank and Bertha Herman, Chris Diaz, and Christian Scalia will be there to greet you. Now that the holidays are almost here, Tango’s can take care of all your holiday needs. They can design and deliver custom gift baskets, cakes, pastries and party platters, from mild to wild, to make any occasion extra special. Tango’s is located in the Pinecrest Town Center, 12729 S. Dixie Hwy., or call 786-293-8001.

Little Feet and More marks store’s fifth year in business BY GARY ALAN RUSE Christina Rodriguez, who owns the Little Feet and More children’s shoe shop in South Miami, is celebrating her fifth year in business this month. More than just an investment, the shop has special meaning for her. Rodriguez purchased the popular shoe store in 2003 from the man who used to sell her shoes when she was a child. “We specialize in shoes for children, starting about one year and going up to about 10 years,” Rodriguez said. “I believe that what differentiates my store from others is our reputation for fitting shoes properly. We take pride in doing a job well done and our customers appreciate it and in return are very loyal. I would prefer to lose a sale than to sell a shoe that does not fit the child correctly. “Word of mouth travels very quickly and a child who suffers a

blister from a shoe that is too lose or marks from a shoe that is too tight would be detrimental to our business.” Rodriguez owns the store with her schoolteacher mother, Luisa Mañas, and has been a resident of South Florida all her life. Rodriguez previously had been working as a shoe buyer with one of the chain stores but this was her first opportunity to become an owner/manager and be on her own. A graduate of St. Thomas University, she also attended the Art Institute where she specialized in Fashion Merchandising. “We have all kinds of shoes — athletic, dress shoes, casuals. You name it; we’ve got it,” Rodriguez said. “We have socks and accessories as well.” Rodriguez believes in community involvement and likes to help out local groups. “We do donations about twice a year of merchandise from the back to various organizations,” Rodriguez said. “One of them is

Neat Stuff, an organization that helps foster children.” Rodriguez carries uniform shoes, of interest to those who have children in private schools and even some public schools, which require uniforms for their students. One aspect of her personal life has benefited her business approach. “Since I bought the store, I’ve had two babies, which definitely helped me, since I used to buy for adults and buying for children was new for me and I made many mistakes in the beginning,” Rodriguez said. “I think having kids really helped me to

know what moms want. I have a 3year-old and an 8-month-old.” Rodriguez currently does not have any plans for expanding. She says she is still learning and trying to perfect her one store before moving on to any other business ventures, although selling shoes on line could be a possibility for the future. Little Feet and More is located at 7216 SW 57 Ave. (Red Road) and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The shop is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305666-9655.

Bonnin Ashley Antiques specializes in classic furniture BY ROBIN KORTH Sorne Boloix Flick and her husband, Michael Flick, own and operate Bonnin Ashley Antiques, one of the largest antique businesses in South Florida. Located in the Bird Road Art District at 4707 SW 72 Ave., Bonnin Ashley opened for business in 1986. Today the company specializes in classic and provincial antique furniture from around the world. Sorne handles the day-to-day operation of the company’s 10,000-squarefoot showroom, while Michael, a trained sculptor and expert restorer, supervises the nearby 20,000-squarefoot warehouse and restoration facility. Before opening Bonnin Ashley, Sorne worked in the art and finance fields at such organizations as the Lowe Art Museum and the Southeast Bank Corporation Foundation. She was working as an executive secretary at a savings and loan company, but found herself unexpectedly pregnant in 1985 and quit after the birth of the child, confident that she could become her own boss while taking care of her daughter. “After returning from a six-month

Women Mean Business sojourn in Italy where I worked on an archaeological dig while my husband sculpted in Florence, we found ourselves searching for a place to live,” Sorne recalls. “We bought a warehouse just behind our present location and converted the upstairs into a beautiful living space and planned to use the downstairs for my husband’s sculpting studio. While he was in graduate school pursuing his master’s degree in sculpture and our daughter was just three months old, I appropriated the studio to open two businesses simultaneously — Bonnin Ashley Antiques and Sculpture Space, an alternative gallery representing emerging artists. Robert Chambers, Karen Rifas and Bob Thiele showed some of their first works with us. “These were interesting and exciting

times. Every six weeks we mounted an exhibition and we would have as many as 400 people coming through the gallery during opening night. Our exhibition schedule was synchronized with that of the Coral Gables galleries and we were the last stop on the tour. We also sponsored art salons and artists would show slides of their work for collectors and other artists. These evenings would go on until the wee hours. “In 1988, two years after I started the business, my husband gave up his career as a sculptor to join me. It had also become apparent I had to choose between the two businesses. By that time the antique business had become our livelihood. “Before Michael got involved, I spent many an afternoon in the side yard with a pad sander in hand working on a piece of furniture. I’d have one ear cocked listening for the phone and one eye on my daughter in her crib. The company is actually named after that little girl in the crib — Bonnin Ashley.” In 1991, after their second daughter was born, the Flicks moved into a more conventional home and expanded the business upstairs. By the time their third child was born, they had moved the business to its present location on Southwest 72 Avenue. Sorne is passionate about antiques and delights in sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm with her customers. She says Bonnin Ashley specializes in 18th and 19th Century European and American furniture. “Aside from the breadth of the inventory,” she says, “what impresses our customers is the obvious quality and variety we offer, which includes Hepplewhite, Biedermeier, Empire, Renaissance, Napoleon III, Louis XV, Louis XVI and European country pine.”

Besides exquisite furniture, Bonnin Ashley has heirloom-quality bed and table linens, paintings, mirrors, chandeliers and much more. Antique restoration and preservation is an integral part of the business. “The restoration of our antique furniture is museum quality and takes place in a facility near the showroom, where the work is overseen by my husband, who prefers working alongside our restorers,” Sorne says. “We facilitate the shipping of our furniture and provide expert crating. Because our clientele is international, we have extensive experience shipping to South and Central America, and the Caribbean, as well as within the United States.” Bonnin Ashley Antiques is open Tuesday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 305667-0969.

UPSCALE NEIGHBORHOOD RESTAURANT WITH AFFORDABLE PRICES At last, a new restaurant in the Falls Shopping Center! Let me introduce you to Cafe Med, a dining experience that will be enjoyed by all. Entering the restaurant I was first welcomed by a friendly hostess and then the owner himself. The ambiance was warm and yet festive with the magnificent center piece and a Mediterranean blue atmosphere. The aroma escaping the kitchen was tantalizing as we sat at our table. (There are booths to choose from also). The menu starts you off with 12 appetizers consisting of a large variety to choose from. Some examples are eggplant parmigiana, fried mozzarella, bruschetta and shrimp cocktail. I chose the chicken wings which were the best I have ever had! The entrees were equally impressive with 11 salads, 6 dinner sandwiches, 8 thin crust Italian pizzas, 17 pastas and 5 different fish items cooked many different ways. They also have veal and several meat and chicken dishes. You could eat at this restaurant everyday for a month and choose a different item each time. The prices are very reasonable and very affordable for large families. The happy hour is from 3:00-7:00 Monday thru Friday and the appetizers are half off! There is also a cozy back room for private parties and group meetings. The full menu is available for take out and large catering. Finally, a restaurant in the neighborhood where the prices and the choices (along with great tasting) make eating in or taking out an easy decision to make!

Erni Mathis has been cutting hair and creating new styles for her customers for 33 years. Her salon — Erni’s, previously known as Curl Up and Dye — is located in South Miami, 7000 SW 62 Ave., across the street from Larkin Hospital. Erni notes that she has been in the beauty business since she was 19 years old. “My Momma said get dressed and go to this appointment she’d made for me at the beauty school,” she recalls. “That was in Memphis, Tennessee. I was working for McDonald’s and had no idea what I wanted to do with myself. Momma made the appointment and I went. Southern girls do what their Momma says.” Mathis made it through beauty school, got her license and began her hair-styling career just as Dorothy Hamill skated her way to the Gold Medal in the 1976 Olympics. “The Dorothy Hamill cut became all the rage,” Mathis says. “I can’t count the number of women whose hair I styled in that distinctive wedge cut; but I learned how to really cut hair!” In 1984, Mathis moved to Miami after a visit to family members here exposed her to the Atlantic Ocean. She says it was love at first site. For 23 years and through three different owners, Mathis managed the hair salon located in the lobby of the building at 7000 SW 62 Ave. In 2000, she became the fourth owner of what has come to be known as “the great little salon near South Miami Hospital.” A divorced mother of two — a nineyear-old daughter and a 15-year-old son – Mathis took the plunge and became the owner of what was then called

Interactive children’s exhibit about Jerusalem to open at JCC Linda K. Landy ALPER JCC NEWS Every year the call comes without fail. It is my father, and the first question is always the same, “Do you know what today is?” The call comes on Dec. 7 — “the date which will live in infamy,” according to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. To those who are less historically indoctrinated, Dec. 7, 1941 marks the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. A student of World War II history would also know that one of the reasons the attack was so devastating was its non-accidental timing early on a Sunday morning. The subject of this column has absolutely nothing to do with WWII, Pearl Harbor, Japan, military or history. This column is actually about a wonderful interactive children’s exhibit about Jerusalem, a free storybook program designed to start young children on the path to a Jewish identity and an amazingly creative art exhibit based on eggshells by the former first lady of Israel. The only thing they have in common is the date. They all take place on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, a date that has lived in infamy (at least in my family). I have a feeling you will have no trouble remembering the date. If I am a little late for these promising programs, you’ll know that I am still waiting for the call from my dad.

lar demand, the elaborately-designed exhibit returns after a 10-year hiatus, bigger and better than before. Created for children in grades kindergarten through six, the exhibit is designed to represent the eight gates of the walled old city of Jerusalem. Each gate explores a different theme and offers interactive activities that explore the history, geography and spirit of this unique city. The sights, sounds and smells of Jerusalem come alive through poetry, archaeology, music and games. Old Jerusalem is unique because it is divided into four quarters (Armenian, Christian, Jewish and Muslim) and is considered the spiritual center for three major religions of the world (Judaism, Christianity and Islam). Visitors to the exhibit can hear the calls to prayer for each faith and activities are planned to teach tolerance and to discover the abundance of diversity in this richly multi-cultural place. Children will play the Jerusalem Stone fact game, match stones from different temple periods to the Wall, follow a timeline of Jerusalem through the ages, view and identify religious artifacts, do an artifact rubbing, make a Hamsa art project and play the map game Where is Jerusalem?

The exhibit opens Sunday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Opening day activities include storytelling, refreshments and an art project.

THE PJ LIBRARY Opening day at the Walk through Jerusalem exhibit will also serve as the local kick-off for The PJ Library program, which sends free Jewish-content books and music on a monthly basis to children from age six months to five. The Harold Grinspoon Foundation started the PJ Library in three years ago to reach out to Jewish families with young children to help create stronger Jewish homes, foster children’s curiosity about their Jewish heritage and help families explore their Jewish identity. It is now available in more than 100 communities. Each subscribed child receives a free gift of a high-quality, age appropriate Jewish book or CD that is mailed to the home every month. Foremost children’s book experts have selected the book and music list, which includes a wide array of themes related to Jewish holidays, folktales and Jewish family life. Every book comes with resources to help families use the selection in their homes. Parents say it’s the connection they and their children make with their heritage and each other that makes the program so rich. “The response to this cutting-edge outreach program has been overwhelmingly positive, with many families talking about how it has changed their lives,” said Marcie Greenfield Simons, national director of the PJ Library in Massachusetts. Stop by and register your children or grandchildren.

AIZA OLMERT - TIKKUN Photographer and artist Aiza Olmert, wife of Ehud Olmert, former prime minister of Israel, examines Tikkun, the Jewish imperative to heal and restore balance in the world, using eggshells as a metaphor in a collection of haunting photographs and constructions that convey the fragility

of existence, the obstacles to survival, and the imperative to sustain life. As a daughter of survivors of the Holocaust and as an artist whose life has been shaped by Israel’s struggle for security, Olmert’s works allude to the emotional toll of successive wars and ongoing terror. “Olmert’s constructions — made of broken eggshells reunited with electrical wires and safety pins — are improbable works of art,” says coordinating curator Susan Morgenstein. “The only verbal clue by the artist is the title word tikkun, a reference to our responsibility to, in a rough translation, repair the world.” The former first lady of Israel collects broken eggshells from her local Jerusalem bakery and painstaking repair with careful pinning and joinery of the remains of shells out of which she constructs new formal arrangements. In Olmert’s computer-generated photographs, elements of the delicate and rather small original constructions are manipulated, isolated and repeated, allowing her compositions to grow in scale. The resulting larger-than life photographs are new compositions based on the constructions, not pictures of them. In the installation process, completed photographs become part of larger compositions by hanging the works serially in stacks or in rows. The grand opening reception will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. and the exhibit runs through Sunday, Jan. 4. For more information on all of these events, call 305-271-9000 or click <www.alperjcc.org>.

2009 VW Tiguan is ‘GTI of crossovers’ Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The new Volkswagen Tiguan is quite a nice little SUV with excellent power, solid handling and good fuel economy. It’s too bad the price tag is a little high. Volkswagen calls the Tiguan “the GTI of crossover vehicles” and that’s an accurate description. It is powered by the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that’s in VW’s popular GTI, and that gives the Tiguan more horses than most of the competition. The turbocharged power plant has 200 hp and 207 pounds-feet torque, while the combination of four valves per cylinder, direct fuel injection and turbocharging delivers the optimum balance of power and economy. The engine is mated to a very smooth six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shiftgate. There’s also a sixspeed manual transmission as an option. At the same time, the European-tuned suspension provides for exceptionally pos-

itive handling and a very smooth ride. Both front wheel drive and 4Motion allwheel-drive are available. Tiguan is nicely styled, with an attractive smiley-face front end that features a two-bar curved grill bulleted in the center by a large round VW logo and headlights that wrap around and flow into the front fenders. Three trim levels are offered — S, SE and SEL — with both the SE and SEL available with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system. On the road, Tiguan is quick off the line, and handles exceptionally crisp and precise, very much like a sporty automobile, while showing very little lean in the corners. The ride is quiet, solid and comfortable, though we found some harshness on uneven or bumpy roads, which we attributed to the larger optional 18-inch wheels on the vehicle. On the inside, Tiguan’s interior is comfortable and flexible, very roomy up front, and the leather interior has the look and feel of quality. The controls are conveniently placed and easy to use, and there are plenty of pockets and places to stash things. There’s good cargo space and the reclining rear seats travel six inches fore and aft to adjust for additional leg room or cargo space. Folding the second-row seats flat allows for a total of 56.1 cubic feet of

hauling space, and sun lovers will like the optional panoramic sunroof that opens up to almost 13 square feet of sky. One more option is a state-of-the-art navigation system that combines a sophisticated radio with a precise touch-screen and easy-to-use map views on a 6.5-inch, high-resolution display. The system includes a 30GB hard drive to store map data and audio files that can be brought into the device via the optical drive or card slot. The drive reads CD, DVD and DVD audio formats. In conjunction with

the media device interface (MDI), the system interfaces with an iPod or USB stick. The system also offers Sirius Satellite Radio and Sirius Traffic service, which streams realtime traffic data into the navigation system. Prices on the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan start at $23,200. Turley Jewelers hosts Charriol on Dec. 6 BY LEE STEPHENS This Holiday Season at Turley Jewelers is beginning with a rare oneday event, hosting the international company of Charriol. When you come to Turley Jewelers on Saturday, Dec. 6, between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., you will have the opportunity to explore this unique and luxurious line of jewelry designs. The Charriol Company began in 1983 when Phillippe Charriol, president of Cartier in Asia and North America, ventured out to build his own company. What he sought to do was to create a brand of his own, producing luxury products targeted to an audience much like himself — sophisticated, quality-conscious and sporty. Based on his appreciation of antiquity, Charriol first developed a line of watches, then jewelry and eventually an entire product line inspired by the twisted cable designs of the ancient Celts. He named it Charriol. The Celtic concept and Charriol’s philosophy — L’art de vivre la difference — translated as “the art of living the difference” and was embraced by people who wanted to share the same experience and philosophy of life. From its inception, this

brand has experienced exceptional growth. Today, the brand has blossomed into an international luxury mark with multi-product collections that range from fine watches, jewelry and leather goods to writing instruments and eyewear. It is well known across the Far East, the U.S. and Europe. The brand has penetrated more than 2,500 outlets and built over 40 freestanding boutiques known as Philippe Charriol Boutiques. These achievements are quite impressive for a brand with such a short history. The great success of the brand has been attributed to suitable pricing, reliable quality and a coherent, consistent marketing program on a worldwide scale. Turley Jewelers owner Eddie De Paula is excited about displaying the entire line of this exquisite jewelry. “The Charriol brand brings luxury and quality to the world of jewelry,” he said. “We are proud to feature this brand in our store.” Turley Jewelers, at 11501 S. Dixie Hwy., has served Pinecrest for over six years. The store features a complete repair department and specializes in custom design, fine diamonds and watches. For more information, call 305-252-1123.

Aging pets develop humanlike ailments, maladies PET DOCTOR

BY DR. GREG FRISHMAN Veterinarian, South Dade Animal Hospital

It’s inevitable. People age and so do their pets. In fact, you may recognize some similarities between the mental and physical changes that occur in dogs and their owners as the years advance. “Honey, I said it three times already!” It’s not your imagination; your dog (or significant other) may not hear or notice you as readily when you walk into the room. As dogs age, the nerve cells and hearing apparatus degenerate, resulting in a slow loss of hearing. Eyes are affected as well. The lens of the eye becomes cloudy with age, resulting in lenticular sclerosis, not usually a cause of significant vision loss. Cataracts, however, may develop, which do interfere with vision. People slow down, just like their dogs. Have you observed that Daisy isn’t as enthusiastic about going out for her walks? As dogs age, their metabolic rate slows. This results in a decreased activity level. Unfortunately, a slower metabolism means – you guessed it - weight gain. Elderly dogs require 30 to 40 percent fewer calories. By eating a normal maintenance diet, obesity often develops. Does that mean smaller portions and one less glass of wine? Noticing more infections, hair “whitening,” loss of skin elasticity, thickening footpads and brittle nails? As the body ages, the immune system weakens, making it harder for dogs to ward off infections. Aging causes hair to lose its normal pigment, turning white. Hair cells take more time to regenerate and hair loss is common, often seen as patchy hair loss. One of the most painful aging charac-

teristics for both dogs and humans is the development of arthritis. As muscle, bone and cartilage decrease with age, the bones begin to scrape against one another, causing arthritic pain. Just like for you, it’s hard to watch your pet or loved one limp or have difficulty getting up because he/she is in arthritic pain. Along with tooth loss from build up of dental calculus, gastrointestinal upset caused by deterioration of the stomach lining and constipation, one of the hardest things for pet owners to handle is incontinence. When the kidney function and control over the urinary bladder sphincter lessens, urine leakage and loss of house training occurs. Over time, the cells within the brain also decrease. As the cells die, senility develops, commonly resulting in loss of house training and spatial confusion. Don’t despair; there is something you can do about all this. Talk to your vet about the many medications and remedies that can help increase mobility, lessen arthritic pain and alleviate incontinence. Thanks to better nutrition, better veterinary care and excellent care on the part of the owner, dogs (and humans) are living longer, pain free! Partnering with a professional and learning what to expect as your dog ages can give you and your dog the best quality of life together during the “golden” years.
