ONE OF MIAMI’S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS
Alert citizens help village police fight crime
A
BY RON BEASLEY
lert residents helped Village police arrest three criminals and solve several recent burglaries and vehi-
cle break-ins. Police chief John Hohensee said that two Pinecrest residents recently called his department to report suspicious vehicles at two different locations in the south end the Village. He said officers were dispatched to the scenes to investigate, resulting in the arrest of three men and the recovery of stolen property that was found in their automobiles. “For all of my years here in Pinecrest, I have stressed the importance of alert citizens calling us whenever they see something that looks out of place,” said Hohensee. “To have two of these incidents in one week is in itself remarkable. This principle becomes a ‘force multiplier’ with many more attentive eyes and ears in play rather than our much smaller number of on-duty police officers.” Hohensee said that in the first incident a resiJOHN HOHENSEE dent called police to report a suspicious vehicle driving around the neighborhood. Police responded and located the vehicle parked on SW 124th Street near 67th Avenue. After watching a man get in the car and drive away, police stopped the car for a traffic violation. “The man was evasive with his answers, he couldn’t explain what he was doing in the area and the vehicle had dark tinted windows, which heightened the officer’s suspicions,” said Hohensee. “When the man got out of the vehicle, our officer saw what he thought was contraband in the car.” After taking the man into custody, the officer found a laptop computer and a purse

in the car, which were later found to have been stolen from a Pinecrest resident’s automobile. In the second incident, also in the south end of the Village, a resident called police to report that two men were sitting in a car parked in his driveway. Police immediately responded and apprehended the two suspects after finding burglary tools and a new television set in the car. After investigation, police determined that the TV set had been stolen earlier in a burglary of a Pinecrest home. “Even though the burglars were no longer in the area where they burglarized a house and stole the TV,” said Hohensee, “we were able to connect the dots and solve that crime when the resident came home and reported that his house had been broken into and his television set stolen. When that call came in, we were investigating the suspicious-vehicle call and we simply
put the two together.” After the resident positively identified the TV set as the one that was stolen from his house, police arrested the two men on theft charges. “Because two citizens called us when they saw something that just didn’t look right, two other residents were able to get their stolen property returned,” said Hohensee. “For years, I have been stressing the importance of people calling us when they see anything that looks out of the norm. These two incidents only serve to underscore the importance of this. “We really benefit from having an alert citizenry calling us whenever they see suspicious activity. We respond to many calls that are unnecessary, but that’s part of the job. We don’t ever want to get in a situation where someone doesn’t want to call us because they think they’re imposing on us. We are in the business of being imposed upon.”

ANNIE MORRISON Palmer Trinity senior Annie Morrison is adventurous. Twice during her high school career, she has left home to live abroad and experience a different lifestyle. Last summer, she participated in a month-long program in France called Service Learning in Paris. “It was a service-based trip, as well as a French program,” Morrison says. “It was made up of all American students. We took French lessons in the morning and in the afternoon did community service at a day care center or a hospital.” At the Paris day care center, she was able to communicate with the children only with the help of one girl who spoke Spanish. Morrison communicated with her in Spanish and she relayed the information to the children in French. “I was not a French student yet,” she says with a laugh. “I’m taking French One now.” Morrison says she wanted to participate in the program so she could go to France and see her cousins. “My mom’s whole side is French; all my cousins live in Paris,” she says. “My mom speaks French, my brother speaks French. I’m really involved in community service, so it was perfect. I could learn French and do community service. It was awesome.” There was lots of free time for the students to explore on their own, so she was able to spend a lot of time with her cousins. “I loved it. It was such a great experi-
ence,” she says. Morrison’s first trip outside the country without her family came when she spent a semester in Australia attending an all-girl school. In fact, that semester abroad strongly influenced her decision about her future. At the school she attended, she noticed that half of the students were Asian. As a result, she decided that she would study and learn at least one Asian language, which ties in with her plan to major in international studies in college, with a focus on languages. She is already fluent in English and Spanish. As far as which college she plans to attend, Morrison says she’s applying to many schools. “My first choice is probably Georgetown,” she says. “I’m applying to UVA, Boston College, Denver University, Santa Clara University, the University of San Diego, Northwestern in Chicago and George Washington.” When she’s in Miami, Morrison leads a busy life. She’s in the coed service club Students Offering Support, which does a lot of community service. “Last year I kind of started SOS with one of my friends who was a senior,” she says. Until this year, she was a member of Twenty Little Working Girls, also a service club, but limited to girls. Morrison is also in the Students Fight Aids Club and a new club, Operation Smile, which helps children with cleft palate. She’s also the community service chair of the Executive Student Government Association. “I’m in charge of getting the whole school involved in things in school and out of school,” she says. She encouraged students to support Breast Cancer Awareness month by putting on skits about awareness during convocations. “We got a lot of people to join The Race for the Cure,” she says. Another program she was involved in was a coin drive for Cancer Free Kids. Morrison is a member of the Spanish National Honor Society and the National Honor Society. Both organizations do their share of community service. For Thanksgiving, SNHS sold candy thank you grams to raise money for backpacks filled with school supplies for kids in Nicaragua. The NHS put together Thanksgiving baskets for the needy. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld
BROOKE SONENREICH For years, Palmer Trinity senior Brooke Sonenreich has performed at the annual St. Andrews Greek Festival doing traditional Greek folk dances. When not dancing, Sonenreich works at the food booth. “I’ve been doing it since I was four,” she says. “There are different dances, so there are different sets. There might be 12 different dances.” Sonenreich learned the dances as a member of the youth group, Greek Orthodox Youth Association or GOYA. “We’ve all been dancing together since we were really young; it’s a family tradition,” she says. Sonenreich has been a member of the Palmer Trinity newspaper staff for three years and is now the editor in chief. “I like interviewing people and collecting facts and information and writing newspaper articles,” she says. “Right now, we’re trying to have more substance, be more community based. We want to have more about Palmer Trinity. Hopefully by next semester we will be on line and have a webpage and be more eco-friendly.” Sonenreich hopes to generate more online readers so she can print fewer copies of the paper. She believes that will help Palmer Trinity’s goal of becoming greener. “I feel like the Internet is so much easier,” she says. “It’s unavoidable to say physical newspapers are becoming obsolete.” However, she is not working toward
eliminating the physical paper; she just wants to get it on-line and see what happens. Sonenreich also enjoys creative writing and has won a creative writing award at Palmer Trinity. Along with her community service achieved by being the newspaper editor, she is also a member of two community service organizations — Twenty Little Working Girls and Students Offering Support (SOS). She is a member of the executive board of Twenty Little Working Girls and helps direct the organization’s fundraising efforts. She and other members of the organization worked on a talent show that will be presented this month and each year they have a major fashion show to raise money. The proceeds from all the events go to several different charities, including CHARLEE and Special Olympics. Twenty Little Working Girls members also volunteer at major community events, including various art festivals, and at Fairchild Tropical Garden. “There are so many community service opportunities,” she says. “I put together the newsletter, so I put out the information to everyone.” Recently, she and other SOS members put together an event for Michael Brewer, the boy who was set on fire by other teens a few weeks ago. “His family was having trouble with medical bills and we are offering help,” she says. “I’m public relations chair for that one.” Plans called for students to walk at Deering Estates to raise money. Each member of SOS was asked to raise $100. Sonenreich’s other activities at school include cheerleading, being a member of student government and serving as a peer counselor. “If a student has an issue, they are allowed to go to the office and ask for a peer counselor,” she says. “A junior or senior is there to help them. It’s completely confidential unless its threatening to their life or someone else’s. We’re like guidance counselors, but it’s easier to talk to us because we’ve been through it all. I became a peer counselor because I wanted to give back to the group that gave me so much.” By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

JOHN BARRIOS For two consecutive summers, John Barrios, now a junior at Westminster Christian School, tutored inner city children in St. Louis, MO during the morning and then moved on to community projects
in the afternoon — cleaning yards, making house repairs, assisting the disabled. The experience made such a mark on him that he’s planning on another trip next summer; this one to Haiti. For each of his trips, Barrios and other teenagers involved had to seek out financial support to pay expenses. Barrios sent out request letters to friends and neighbors, a step that impressed on him how serious and meaningful the trips were. The second of six children in his family, Barrios, like all of his siblings, was delivered by his father, an OB-GYN physician. His father’s work has given him some thoughts about becoming an orthopedic surgeon. His father came to the U.S. from Cuba at age 9. His mother, of Canadian and English descent, came to the U. S. from Mexico. Right now, Barrios’ college plans are on hold. The high school junior plays pitcher and outfielder on Westminster’s varsity baseball team. Baseball has been in his life since he attended a baseball camp as a three-year-old. After making his way through the various youth leagues, he says
the entire experience was rewarding. “I like the team atmosphere,” he says, “along with the opportunity to excel as an individual player. I love to pitch and be a team leader.” Barrios’ goal is to earn a baseball scholarship to the University of Miami, Florida State University, the University of Florida or an east coast school such as Virginia Tech. Barrios’ religious faith plays an important part in his enthusiasm for community service. At Old Cutler Presbyterian Church, he is a leader in the high school group. He leads a small discussion group for the high school level and for the middle school level. On Sunday afternoons, he helps lead a special program for middle school students. He points to Youth Pastor Drew Lints at Old Cutler Presbyterian as a key mentor and motivator in his life. On the Westminster Christian campus, Barrios is the chaplain for the student council. He finds that this group offers the opportunity “to make a difference as a leader.” He says that young people his age are strongly influenced by what they see on
television and in other media. “Television programs and movies tell young people to be cool, be hip, go with the crowd,” he says. Barrios believes that young people, trying to copy the images they see in the media, find their way to drug and alcohol abuse, as well as early sexual involvement. With these observations about the young people in his generation, Barrios sees a natural connection with sharing his faith. “A person’s relationship with God can change the life perspective,” he says.

The holiday shopping season is upon us and unfortunately it is always a peak time for crimes such as home burglaries, thefts, robberies and even muggings. Especially in these tough economic times, I want to share some valuable tips that can help prevent you from becoming the victim of a crime during the holidays. AT HOME • Be extra cautious and lock your doors and windows at all times. • Don’t display gifts and other valuables near windows or doorways where they can be seen. • If you go out in the evening, leave at least one light on and a radio or television so the house looks occupied. • If you go out of town, get an automatic timer for your lights. Ask a neighbor or trusted friend to watch your house and perhaps park their car in your driveway from time to time. • Contact the post office and request your mail not be delivered during the days you will be away. Your carrier will deliver your “held” mail upon your return or you may choose to pick it up at your designated post office branch. • Newspaper deliveries should also be placed on hold while you are away so that they do not pile up and alert passersby that your house is unoccupied. • After Christmas when the gifts have been unwrapped, break down the boxes and fold them so as the words are on the inside. Don’t put the boxes “as is” out on the curb for the trash collectors as this just advertises your newly acquired electronics and other valuables that are now in your home. TIPS FOR SAFE SHOPPING • Always stay alert to your surroundings
and the people around you. Avoid areas where there are people “hanging around” in parking garages, parking lots or the outside of stores. Notify the police or security personnel. • Try to shop before dark if possible and coordinate shopping trips with a friend if you plan to be out late. • Park your car in well-lit areas and never in dark areas, no matter how convenient the spot might be. • Always lock your car doors and windows even if you are only gone for a few minutes. It takes a thief only seconds to steal a car. • Keep packages and other valuables out of public view, preferably locked in the trunk. If you place recent purchases in your trunk and want to continue shopping, move your car to another area. • Have your keys in hand when you return to your car, and always check the interior of your car before you unlock the door to get in. • To discourage purse-snatchers, don’t overburden yourself with packages. • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card whenever possible. • Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Women should carry their purse under their arm with the strap across their body and men should keep their wallet in an inside jacket pocket and not a back trouser pocket. Finally, be sure to teach your children to go only to a store clerk or security guard to ask for help if they should become separated from you while in a store or shopping mall. They should never go into a parking lot alone. I wish you and your family a safe and wonderful holiday season. Area retailers get anti-recession boost from Suchman Retail Group BY PAT FULTON
The old expression goes: When times get tough, the tough get going. Larry Suchman and Philip Leitman, partners in the Suchman Retail Group, a 50-year-old Coral Gables firm that owns and manages nine South Florida shopping center properties, are doing more than that. They have launched “I-Am-AntiRecession” or IARC to support their tenants to help increase foot traffic and sales. The campaign consists of promotional and marketing elements, including banners, consumer sweepstakes and a website where consumers may find coupons from participating merchants. Walk-in customers at any of Suchman’s tenant stores can fill out a form and drop it in the brightly-colored “anti-recession” boxes or enter by logging on to the campaign website <www.i-am-antirecession.com>. Web-based entrants must first donate to a charity such as American Lung and Research. At first, some people thought the drawing box was a hoax, with no real prizes actually awarded. But the public soon learned this was no hoax and that the prizes
were very real. Leitman introduced the idea — one he had used in an earlier economic recession — to Suchman, his cousin and partner, and the pair launched the full-scale tenant-support effort last summer. “We want to add some excitement to the retail environment and to encourage our tenants to offer something of value to their customers,” Leitman says. A themed web site <www.i-am-antirecession.com> is another tool that Suchman Retail offers its tenants, providing space for each to insert coupons for prospective shoppers. The web site allows the viewer to search by shopping center, product, service category or geographical area. Retailers can make changes or update the coupons on their own. Leitman and Suchman describe this antirecession marketing campaign as “establishing a new level of relationship between landlords and tenants. We’re providing a new business format for our collaboration.” The vigorous in-your-face-at-the-recession approach is symptomatic of the heavily involved attitude the Suchman firm takes with its tenants. The company’s three leasing managers, headed by Ana Vega-

Garcia, pay visits every one or two days to each tenant to see how they are doing. These managers provide 24-7 access to the tenants to assist in problem-solving and needed repairs. On a monthly basis, Suchman staff makes a nighttime visit to each shopping center to check on lighting in the parking lots and in the individual stores. When a new tenant enters a particular strip center, Suchman Retail Group may provide flyers to all the other tenants there encouraging customers to “Visit Our New Neighbor”. As needed, the landlord will assist in coordinating openingday mailings, handouts and brochures for the new tenant. One of the positive effects of Suchman’s approach to landlord-tenant relations and to the anti-recession campaign has been stability in the tenants’ longevity. Looking to the future, the
business partners predict that other cooperative campaigns may be installed, but at this point there has been interest in the anti-recession concept by the International Council of Shopping Centers and other shopping center owners, so the campaign is made available to other landlords. All someone has to do to get details of the program is to contact Philip Leitman through the web site. Leitman’s blog on the web site describes the campaign this way: “It’s all about value and fiscal responsibility while combating the current recession. That’s why our participating stores are offering great coupons and deals. At the end of the day, getting through this recession is something we’re all going to have to do together.” The Suchman Retail Group is headquartered in Coral Gables at 1550 Madruga Ave., Suite 230. The earlier you introduce children to music, the better. That’s one of the concepts behind Musikgarten, an early childhood music education company that helps foster a love of music in the very young. The program trains teachers in music and movement for children. In the Kendall/Pinecrest area, the Musikgarten franchise is owned by Dr. Janet Kirsten, a national board-certified public school music teacher who is currently on sabbatical. Although she has been trained in the Musikgarten system for 10 years, she’s become serious about giving classes since having her children, 19-month old Jolie and three-and-half year old JeriRose. She is now teaching Musikgarten classes at Wayside Baptist Church. “Musikgarten is built on the premise of parental involvement,” Kirsten says. She has classes at Wayside on Mondays and Thursdays starting at 5 p.m. “It’s open to the community,” she says. Kirsten says the classes are developed to be age appropriate. “I guide the parents to help the parents be the child’s teacher,” she says. “I’m providing an example of how to create music in the child’s environment. They are feeling the love and security of their parent and making music with them, and that’s a bonding experience.” Parents are also encouraged to continue the class experiences at home during the week. “It helps them cognitively,” she says. “It helps them with language, and social and emotional development. I teach the parents to feel more comfortable with their voices and try to sing in a range with their children’s voices. Some parents just don’t know that they can control their voices and their mod-
eling can make such a difference in their children’s music development.” The children also learn how to use instruments. The younger ones use little wooden sticks and rattles while the older kids have more advanced instruments. “We do a lot of rhythmic patterning,” she says. “They learn how to handle the instruments, how to be quiet, soft and loud, fast and slow, all these concepts that are going to be revisited when they enter school. It’s all done in a playful environment.” The classes Kirsten offers now are for babies up to 18 months, toddlers and pre-schoolers up to age five, although she is trained to offer classes for children through age seven. “For all of these classes parents are participants,” she says. At Wayside, she also teaches all the children enrolled in the pre-school program, including the infants. The community classes are $10 a class paid for at the beginning of a semester. Those enrolled receive a packet of materials includes a parent book and a CD of the songs they will sing. The packet also contains instructions on how to coordinate a game with the song. The babies get their own instruments but older children share. Kirsten is expanding her scope and is now teaching Musikgarten classes at The Fun Club, a new daycare in South Miami, where she is giving weekly classes to toddlers. Along with her Musikgarten classes, Kirsten also gives private flute lessons, to both individuals and groups. She is a professional flute player who plays at events including weddings. She also has a business called Bravo Musicians. The business puts together bands or ensembles for events, from big bands to jazz quartets. She and her husband play in a lot of ensembles. If a financial scam has not affected you personally, you can be fairly sure that one has affected a friend, neighbor or loved one in the very recent past. That’s right, scams are out there and if we’re not cautious we’ll be taken in, just like the thousands of others who fall prey each day. The old adage, “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!” rings true today more than ever before. Some scams are portrayed as honest mistakes or “too good to be true scenarios.” Other scams use “begs” to garner personal, private information for misuse. They are presented under the guise of offers for help or protection. Here are a few examples: • A seller advertises a car for sale on e-Bay. The seller receives an offer for the car and a deal is struck. Soon the seller receives a check in the mail for a sum substantially more than the agreed upon selling price. The seller contacts the buyer and is told, “Oh, my mistake, I must have been thinking of another deal. Just send me a cashier’s check for the difference along with the title and everything will be fine.” The challenge is that the buyer’s check is bogus, a fraud, a forgery; and by the time the seller gets a call from their financial institution that the buyer’s check was returned, the buyer is long gone with the money from the seller’s cashier’s check and the title. Sometimes the car has even been shipped! • This is a scam something like #1. An individual responds to a want ad for particular job. The employer and employee agree on a position and the prospective employer mails the employee a check for “up-front, paid-ahead first-month’s salary” which, of course, we all know does not happen in the real world. The only caveat is that the employee mail back to the employer a cahier’s check for taxes, insurance and employee benefits which equals 1/3 of the upfront pay. You guessed it, the employer’s check is no good and by the time the employee gets the call from the bank that their first month’s upfront pay check was returned, the employee’s “taxes and benefits cashier’s check” is cashed and the money long gone!
DOLLAR$ & $ENSE • Your financial institution’s alleged security department calls and wants to make sure you’re protected from a recent rash of scams regarding plastic cards. In order to help you the security person needs to verify certain pieces of information regarding your plastic card. The security person may already have some information on you to make you feel more comfortable talking with them. But, the catch is when you tell the scammer what they don’t know like your card number, expiration date, PIN, and the super powerful 3 digit security number on the back of your card at the end of your signature line. By the time you get a thank you from the supposed security person and hang up the phone the scam will have already commenced. The perpetrator will use your information on their own to buy items, get cash, order items online, etc., or they may just sell your information to another charlatan for quick cash and the next fraudster will commence the illicit transactions. • This scam is like #3, only it happens online and is called a Phish. The typical scenario is that you receive an email allegedly from your financial institution’s security department. The email says, “Your card could be compromised and information from you is necessary to ascertain the extent of danger.” You’re then asked to enter your name, account number, PIN and that ever important, secure 3 digit number from the back of the card. Just as above, no sooner have you hit the send key than the scam commences and the unauthorized, illegal purchases begin. There are so many other frauds that are happening every day and I wish we had time to discuss many more. However, the best practice to make sure you’re not the next victim is to be alert, be aware, slow things down, ask questions and, if you feel it necessary, call your financial institution. Most importantly, never give out your private financial information over the phone or online unless you initiated the call. Even then, make sure you know who you’re speaking with and that the information given by you will be used for the purposes intended by you.

Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom went off the air years ago. No matter. On a now regular basis it seems I get my own live version of the show on my backyard porch. Perhaps you’ll recall my story of how a garden snake wound his way onto my screened-in patio back in June. I went to extraordinary lengths to escort him out the door without harming him. It involved a cookie sheet, a litter box scoop and a good dose of compassion. It didn’t end there. Let me begin with a prequel. Remember that God-awful year when three hurricanes hit South Florida? Let’s see, there were Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Quite a few of us lost our trees, windows and patio screens. In fact, my back porch enclosure had so many holes in the top; it looked like metallic Swiss cheese. I was just happy that the rips were confined to the top panels, ensuring that my three cats would remain safely enclosed. I took my time getting those top panels fixed. Big mistake. A few months later, my boy looked out the window and yelled, “Mommy, Blinken has an owl in his mouth!” “No, son, that’s impossible.” “I’m telling you, Blinken has an owl in his mouth!” He grabbed my hand and led me to the window. I looked out and saw my darling, loving, wouldn’t-hurt-a-fly feline with his jaws firmly clamped onto a tiny screech owl. I let out a guttural sound of horror so primal; thereafter I was known as “Screech-Mom”. The next few minutes are a blur, but suffice it to say my husband was able to extract the owl from kitty’s mouth. Thank goodness he was still alive. We put him in a shoe box on the driveway to see if he was well enough to fly away on his own. Nope. The next day, we took him to the Birds of Prey Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, next to the Miami Museum of Science. What a treasure this place is. The volunteers called us that very day to let us know that the owl had suffered only a broken wing, and would be as good as new in a few weeks. When he was fully recovered and ready to be released back into the wild, a volunteer actually brought him to our home. We all gathered in the backyard and she gently gave him to my son. She instructed him to lift up his hands and slowly open them. He did just that, and the tiny creature immediately flew back into the trees from whence he came. It was one of those moments I’ll never forget. I spontaneously broke into a verse from that ’80s song that goes: “Take these broken wings, and let him fly again, learn to live so free.” That
Life With kelly prompted the stink-eye response from both my husband and son, but the volunteer chuckled. All the top screens had since been repaired, so the last thing I expected was that my back porch would continue to be a beacon for all creatures big and small. Maybe I should have broken out into song on a daily basis. That seems to repel both man and beast. Cut to this summer and the snake saga. After I got rid of the little fella in my not so graceful way, I kept wondering how the screens were getting torn down the bottom allowing all these interlopers in. I was still rattled (you’ll pardon the pun) after the snake extraction, so a week later I asked my son to do a reconnaissance mission to make sure the porch was all clear before I went for a swim. “You’ll never believe it Mom. There’s another snake out there and he’s right by the door. This one has a pattern on his back.” “Uh-oh.” I grabbed a shovel and soon spied the offender, unable to determine whether or not he was poisonous. He did have very peculiar markings, so I knew I couldn’t take a chance. I positioned the shovel behind his head and proceeded to Marie Antoinette him. I wasn’t proud, but I knew it had to be done. Two weeks later, a wild peacock came a calling and perched on my roof. In what can only be described as wild coincidence or bitter irony, I was laid off from NBC, otherwise known as the peacock network. The fun doesn’t end there. Last week, my husband couldn’t sleep and decided to make himself a 4 a.m. snack. When he turned on the kitchen light, he looked out the window and there sitting on the ledge helping himself to the cat’s food was an enormous raccoon. Nervy little devil. He gave my husband one of those “Yeah, what do you want?” looks and kept right on eating. He got the bum’s rush, or should I say “brush”, thanks to hubby’s acumen with a broom. From a deep sleep, I was awakened when my husband yelled, “And stay off of this porch or next time I’m going to wake up my wife and have her sing to you!” I don’t know if it was that threat, a trip to Home Depot’s screen department, or the fact that we now keep our cat’s food indoors at night, but we’ve had no more uninvited guests. It seems like we’ve been through them all. Wait. What’s that noise? I’ll investigate and get back to you. Rise and shine for breakfast BY DR. PATRECE FRISBEE Owner, SoBe Well Rise and Dine After a long night's sleep, your body is dehydrated, your muscles are tired, and your brain is sluggish. Like throwing a log on a smoldering fire, breakfast stokes the brain after a night without fuel. Grab a nutritious breakfast and you not only jumpstart your gray matter, you'll boost your metabolism, fight fat, and build lean muscle. No other meal is as important to your overall health and well-being as breakfast. Kick-star t Your Metabolism Your metabolism is in low gear while you sleep. Eating breakfast within the first hour of wakening triggers an immediate increase in calorie burning, which you can sustain all day long. Choose a meal that combines nutrient-dense carbs with lean protein and a dash of monounsaturated fat and it will rev up your metabolism for hours. Try this balanced breakfast booster: Nutrient-Dense Carbs: 3/4 cup of blueberries or pineapple. Lean Protein: 1 cup of low-fat cottage cheese. Monounsaturated Fat: 3 teaspoons of raw, slivered almonds. Fight Fat Breakfast is the single greatest factor in maintaining portion control and stable hormones throughout the day. Studies have shown that eating breakfast on a regular basis significantly lowers your body mass index. Skipping breakfast can only result in a midmorning, low-sugar slump. So, start off the day healthy to avoid the crash and the ensuing coffee and donut dash. Build Lean Muscle The energy used throughout the day and when you exercise is called glycogen, and this is stored in your liver and muscles. While you're sleeping, your body feeds on liver glycogen, which is depleted by morning. Breakfast reverses this deficit. Should
you skip the morning meal, your body is forced to break down muscle for energy. Breakfast — the New Cold Buster Chronically missing meals will eventually break down your immune system; breakfast is a great time to augment your defenses. The betacarotene in papaya, cantaloupe, mangoes, and eggs boosts immunity and berries are a wonderful source for antioxidants. Breakfast Boosters on the Go There's no meal like breakfast, however, 30 percent of Americans eat breakfast outside of the home. The "grab and go "approach has made it to even tougher to find a healthy breakfast. From cinnamon rolls to sausage biscuits, most take-out breakfasts are nutritional nightmares. Set the day’s tone by choosing a breakfast booster: • Sprouted wheat toast with 1/2 teaspoons of peanut or almond butter. • One cup of cottage cheese topped with fruit and almonds. • Six egg whites with your favorite vegetables and an oat bran muffin. • One Zone nutritional bar and a bottle of water. • Fruit smoothie blended with whey protein and wheat germ. • Broiled soy sausage and melted soy cheese on an oat bran muffin. • Slow cooked oatmeal with whey protein, soy milk, and slivered almonds. • McDonald's Egg Muffin. Keeping Your Mental Edge Sharp Studies have found that people perform better on memory and attention tests after eating breakfast. A balanced nutritional breakfast is perfect for staying alert and sharp.

Exonerated cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon tells his story BY NANCY EAGLETON Dr. Alex Zakharia, a highly-esteemed American Board Certified Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon with a 40-year career, has been vindicated by the State of Florida and the Florida Board of Medicine and is in the process of getting his medical license reinstated in 2010. “It is time to clear my name in the court of public opinion,” stated Dr. Zakharia. “My family and I have suffered from this unspeakable injustice. The truth has prevailed. I am so grateful for the support and letters of good wishes from my colleagues and patients. I get calls from patients every day, and I offer them guidance respecting their health issues.” In a letter to Dr. Zakharia dated June 10, 2009, the Florida Department of Health affirmed that the Board of Medicine’s Probable Cause Panel “found there was insufficient evidence to support prosecution” and the pending case against Dr. Zakharia, which investigated past medical cases and his personal health was dismissed. There are no pending cases. This is just one of the final steps in a long legal battle that Dr. Zakharia has endured since 2002 when he proffered a medical opinion during a telephone deposition on behalf of a veteran in Michigan who brought a civil malpractice lawsuit against the Veteran’s Administration. The veteran had undergone a coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) and experienced a brain stroke during the surgery. The prosecution had hired Dr. Zakharia as a vascular surgery expert, who was approved by the Michigan Supreme Court, to testify that if a proper ultrasound was performed prior to the surgery, the disease in the carotid arteries would have been revealed and corrective surgery performed prior to the CABG procedure. Dr. Zakharia offered no criticism of the CABG procedure itself during this 49 minute long-distance deposition and it was never used in court. The case was settled in the veteran’s favor. In May 2004, the Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) Eastern District of Michigan filed charges against Dr. Zakharia, claiming he exaggerated his credentials and made false statements with regards to his CABG experience in the deposition. The AUSA claims were based on records obtained from the defunct Cedars Hospital in Miami naming only the “main surgeons” for CABG procedures performed at that hospital. Dr. Zakharia maintained during his deposition that he was not the main surgeon in these procedures at Cedars, but was, in fact, the attending physician for the period of time in question. Dr. Zakharia had been a main CABG surgeon for 30 years prior, but at other centers. “There is a difference between attending physician and main surgeon, and it was imperative that the AUSA use correct terminology,” said Dr. Zakharia. “My experience as attending physician qualifies me to recommend that an ultrasound treatment should have been conducted prior to this CABG procedure.” Had Cedars Hospital provided complete records to the AUSA, they would have attested to the fact that Dr.
Dr. Alex Zakharia ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Zakharia was undeniably the attending physician, consultant and provided patient care in over 400 cases spanning a period of seven years, and also had active privileges in Thoracic and Vascular Surgery over the past 25 years. Dr. Zakharia has a pending lawsuit against Cedars Hospital which alleges intentional omissions in record production, fraud, defamation, and misrepresentation of hospital privileges. “These misrepresentations have been repeatedly produced in tandem in many Miami Herald publications and were relied upon by the AUSA in Detroit to try to build this case,” said Dr. Zakharia. The doctor and his attorney provided the AUSA with medical records and letters from patients corroborating his role in CABG procedures as attending physician. Letters from the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Miami Heart Institute, Chief of Anesthesia and Director of Nursing also confirmed Dr. Zakharia’s role as assistant surgeon/ co-surgeon at that facility in CABG and Primary Surgeon in Thoracic and Vascular procedures. Dr. Zakharia also provided the AUSA with extensive character, professional and public service records as evidence of his impeccable record over the past 35 years. Dr. Zakharia had no pending lawsuits, investigations, or complaints from any professional, hospital, medical, criminal or civil authorities. “The case was also reviewed by prominent Miami legal authorities, judges, as well as presidents of national surgical societies, who concurred that the AUSA’s position was unwarranted and outrageous,” said Dr. Zakharia. “I
simply gave a medical opinion which was never refuted and suddenly found myself facing criminal charges.” Since the motion to change venue to Miami was denied, and the costs and stress of a full blown trial were overwhelming, Dr. Zakharia settled the case with a plea agreement for Contempt of Court/One Count Misdemeanor. “I had 15 doctors who would have testified on my behalf, but with the trial in Detroit, it was simply not feasible,” said Dr. Zakharia. He said that he and his attorney were led to believe that the proposed penalty in this plea agreement was based on a downward departure and was fair and just. In reliance on this, they accepted the terms, which required the doctor to relinquish his medical license. During sentencing and following the signing of the plea, the AUSA admitted that a mistake was made in calculating the penalty. This meant that Dr. Zakharia had agreed to a penalty that did not correspond to a misdemeanor offense. The proposed penalty was based on a felony charge and not a misdemeanor, and the AUSA admitted this mistake in court. Simply stated, there was no need to trade the practice of medicine for the illusion of a downward departure. “How can an allegedly experienced AUSA commit such malpractice?” Dr. Zakharia said. “If there is no downward departure, why should I retire from the practice of medicine? The issue of relinquishing my medical license was tied to the downward departure, which was not even necessary. I accepted the plea, which was supposed to be a lesser penalty. It was not so. In retrospect, I paid the price for the AUSA’s fraudulent representation and lack of candor. When I realized this, I stated that I wanted out of the plea agreement. We are appealing this miscarriage of justice, and my goal is to get my medical license back.” Dr. Zakharia is encouraged by the finding. “The vindication by the State of Florida is a major victory, which by all standards of fairness and justice, refutes the entire basis for the AUSA’s arguments, the defamatory articles published by the Miami Herald and Cedars’ malicious claims,” he said. Dr. Zakharia has been in private practice in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in Miami since 1985. Prior to this, he served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Miami’s School of Medicine, the Attending Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Veterans Hospital in Miami. “I’ve practiced at seven different hospitals in Dade County and have trained hundreds of students and residents,” said Dr. Zakharia. “I’ve been published in various books, publications and medical journals and lectured at numerous seminars including the Armed Forces in Bethesda. I am an active member in most national and international societies for Cardiovascular Surgery and was the subject of an editorial in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, recognizing my pioneering innovations in cardiothoracic trauma.” Dr. Zakharia has been married to wife Andree for 38 years, and they are the proud parents of Yara, Kareem, and Alex.

This year due to the economic situation, the holidays may have a different or more sincere focus than of those of the past. Personally, I think this is probably not such a bad thing. Chanukah, like many holidays in this country, has become more commercialized focusing more on the purchasing and receiving of gifts and less about the spiritual-ness and its true meaning. This year I plan to take the time to concentrate on the true gifts I have been given not only this year, but also throughout my life. As I approach this special time of the year where my family and I gather together with friends and extended family, I feel my own “light” and purpose starting to shine a little brighter, too. In celebrating, I plan to not only teach my children about this holiday’s importance and traditions, but also give more of myself by sharing my love and time with those in need and learn to be and feel a part of something greater than myself. How, one might ask, can she do all those things? Of course I will attend services, light the menorah, recite blessings, give to those less fortunate and yes, eat lots of delicious traditional food with loved ones.
Additionally, I plan to join our community to celebrate outside under the stars surrounded by nature, song and spirit. What a fun way to feel a part of something special. Although I missed the very well attended Rosh Hashanah Under the Stars event like this in the fall, I have heard so many wonderful and moving stories that I knew this one was not one that I could miss. Coming together, reaching out within our community and celebrating all the gifts we have both individually and those we share is what will make this year even more meaningful to me. Perhaps the light of this season will shine a little in each of us. Chanukah in the Park, Saturday, Dec. 12, from 4-6 p.m. at Coral Reef Park, 7895 SW 152 St. Dress comfortably, bring your picnics and blankets. Lots of kids’ activities, Chanukah music and a beautiful Havdallah service officiated by Rabbi Greengrass and Cantor Segal. This event is free and open to everyone. I hope to see you there and have a very Happy Chanukah! For more information, call Diaz at 305667-6667, ext. 107, or email her at <rdiaz@tbam.org>. Palmetto Middle students create butterfly habitat at Community Center BY CHRISTIAN ARMSTRONG
Student, Palmetto Middle School Members of the Palmetto Middle School National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) came to the Village Community Center on a sunny Saturday late last month and brought along lots of sun block, enthusiasm and the desire to help create a new butterfly garden. Students Emma Kirkpatrick, Juliette and Etienne Choiseul, Stephanie Levine, Conor Whalen and NJHS member-in-themaking Jean-Luc Choiseul got some dirt under their fingernails as they labored side by side, digging holes and planting dozens of butterfly-attracting plants outside the Pinecrest Library adjacent to Southwest 112th Street. This community project was spearheaded by the Pinecrest Garden Club and labor came from a handful of Palmetto Middle students who say leadership and service to their community are part of the curriculum as members of NJHS.
The butterfly habitat area, which was outlined in the shape of a Zebra Long Wing Butterfly, is now home to Pentas, Porterweeds, Milkweeds, Lantanas and other butterfly attractors and will provide a nectar source. Vine climbers such as Dutchman Pipe and Passion Flower were planted as a larval source. The new butterfly garden is not only a plentiful habitat and refuge for winged creatures, it is also a colorful addition to the Village Community Center and can be viewed from inside the library. Morning turned into afternoon as the students wrapped up the project with a healthy watering and the release of thousands of Ladybug beetles as an ecologically safe alternative to pesticide. As tools were gathered and clean-up began, the students were quick to notice that butterflies and bees were already feasting in the new plantings. Obviously, the “buzz was out about the newly-planted Butterfly Habitat at Pinecrest Community Center. Pat Kyle Lawrence, President of the Pinecrest Garden Club

The pagan origins of Christmas Chef Jan OWNER, TWO CHEFS RESTAURANT
COOKING WITH JAN Many of our modern Christmas traditions began hundreds of years before Christ was born. Some of these traditions originated more than 4,000 years ago. The addition of Christ to the celebration of the winter solstice did not occur until 300 years after Christ died, and as late as 1800 some devout sects, like the Puritans, forbade their members from celebrating Christmas because it was considered a pagan holiday. So what is the history behind these traditions? The Christmas tree is derived from several solstice traditions. The Romans decked their halls with garlands of laurel and placed candles in live trees to decorate for the celebration of saturnalia. In Scandinavia, they hung apples from evergreen trees at the winder solstice as a reminder that spring and summer will
come again. The evergreen tree was the special plant of their sun god, Baldur. Exchanging gifts at a winter celebration is also pre-Christian and is from the Roman Saturnalia. They would exchange good-luck gifts called Setae (lucky fruits). A big feast was inevitable, just like we have today. Mistletoe is from an ancient Druid custom at the winter solstice. Mistletoe was considered a divine plant and it symbolized love and peace. The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe is Druid in origin. Even the date of Christmas, Dec. 25, was borrowed from another religion. At the time Christmas was created in AD 320, Mithraism was very popular. The early Christian church had become weary of futile efforts to stop people from celebrating the solstice and the birthday of Mithraism, the Persian sun god. Mithra’s birthday was Dec. 25. So, the Pope decided to make Jesus’ official birthday coincide with Mithra’s birthday. So, if you are celebrating any of the western traditions this season, remember that you are feasting on borrowed traditions in order to celebrate the birth of

Christ. With that said, here are a couple of great (maybe a little non-traditional) dishes that can spark up your holiday table. DAIRYLESS CELERY ROOT SOUP with chicken livers, granny smith apples and thyme. 1/4 cup diced bacon lardoons 6 sprig thyme 3 cup diced (small) celery root (peeled ) 2 quarts chicken stock Juice from 1 lemon Salt and pepper to taste Soup Cook the bacon in a medium sauce pan until fat is rendered, add 6 sprigs of thyme along with the celery root, add stock and simmer for 20 minutes, remove and discard thyme sprigs, puree soup until smooth, strain and season with lemon juice and salt and pepper, set aside and reheat before serving Apples 4 tiny Granny Smith apples (peeled and sliced into 1 inch rounds) 1/4 cup melted butter 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar Brush the apples with the melted butter and bake in a preheated 400-degree oven for aprox 20 minutes or until caramalized and tender. Remove from pan and deglaze with the apple cider. Chicken livers 4 chicken livers Olive oil Salt and pepper Saute livers aprox 2 minutes on each side, season, set a side, cut into quarters. Assembly Place apple slices and livers in 4 soup bowls, ladle the heated soup over; then garnish and sprinkle a little chopped parsley and serve.
RACK OF LAMB with cumin scented porcini mushrooms, golden raisins and mashed potatoes. 2 cups sliced porcini mushrooms 1 1/2 tablespoon butter Pinch of cumin 1 tbl spoon rice vinegear 1/4 cup water Olive oil 1/2 cup golden raisins. Mushrooms Sautee mushrooms in the butter along with cumin for aprox 2 minutes, add vinegar, water, olive oil and raisins, and cook for 5 minutes, Season with salt and pepper. Set aside. Lamb Trim the rack for excess fat and sinew, season with salt and pepper, brown the rack in a hot skillet with a splash of olive oil, move into a preheated 375-degree hot oven and roast for aprox 15 minutes, or until cooked medium-rare. Let rest 5 minutes flipping it over (back and forth) to let the juices run.. Mashed potatoes I don’t think I need to give a recipe for mashed potatoes, but a golden rule: Add salt only after cooked, use cream cheese and sour cream instead of butter and cream (just an idea). Assembly Place a dollop of mashed potatoes in middle of plate, slice a double-cut lamb chop and place on top; ladle the porcini mushrooms and raisin concoction on top. Happy holidays!

Women who have liposuction to get rid of belly fat or jiggly thighs often are afraid that they might gain weight and ruin their desired toned look. So the folks at Soluna MD, the med-spa located at 4251 Salzedo St., Suite 1330, in the Village of Merrick Park, have developed a weight-loss program to help clients keep the extra pounds at bay. Called Soluna Slim MD, the program is a medically supervised weight loss and wellness system that can help clients meet their weight loss goals or help them maintain their weight. The program was developed by a team of doctors and industry specialists. “This is something we’re incorporating now because there is a need for it,” says Linda Alamo, Soluna’s operations manager. “Out of that need, we developed the weight loss program.” Clients who join the program can choose from several options. “We have two different ones,” Alamo says. “You have people who are reluctant to go for little shakes and bars. We have an option for people who want real food.” For those who choose the supplement program, there is a phase out that will wean the dieters off the supplements and help them learn how to maintain the weight loss with regular foods. “You have to have constant follow-up,” says Dr. John Chang, an experienced surgeon who performs all liposuctions at Soluna. He says developing the weight-loss program just made sense for the med spa.
The key to weight loss and weight maintenance is behavior modification. With the Soluna Slim system, clients are kept on track with frequent follow-up. The program also ensures the client stays healthy with blood pressure checks and blood work. The weight-loss program, used in conjunction with the Smartlipo Ultra Laser Body Sculpting, can be quite effective. Smartlipo is a revolutionary new procedure that melts fat that is then sucked out. The procedure is done with a local anesthesia and the recovery time is quick – you can go out again the next day. Chang has done more than 2,100 of the Smartlipos in two years, roughly 25 cases a month. “This has become my niche,” he says. “I have a lot of experience with the machine.” In fact, the number of cases he does caught the eye of the laser’s manufacturer, so the company contacted Soluna to see if Chang is interested in training other doctors in the procedure. Smartlipo Ultra is done along with an ultrasound to make sure the sculpting treatment removes the fat effectively. “We can remove up to four liters (of fat) per procedure,” Alamos says. While for most people only one treatment is needed with the Smartlipo, if more treatments are needed, they can be done a week or so later. Soluna MD offers a full range of cosmetic services, from SmarlLipo to Botox to hair removal and PermaLift. For more information call 305-446-0440 or go to <www.SolunaMD.com>.

2009 BMW Z4 is all new with retractable hardtop Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The 2009 version of BMW’s Z4 two-seat sports car is really something special. It’s the second generation of the Z4 (the Z3 debuted in 1996) and it’s an all-new vehicle, right up to the nifty retractable hardtop. The new retractable hardtop model replaces both the roadster and coupe versions of previous generation Z4 models. The new retractable hardtop closes and opens in 20 seconds with the press of a button and provides better security, rigidity, rear visibility, quiet and protection from the weather than was available with the old ragtop. This latest Z4 is built on the same wheelbase as its predecessor, but it’s about six inches longer in the tail and the lines are softer. Chalk up the added length to the need to accommodate the hardware for the retractable hardtop. This Z4 sits low to the ground and has classic roadster styling, with a long hood and a short decklid, with
curves and creases that caress the front fenders and curve to the rear wheels. The 2009 Z4 comes in two models, the sDrive30i and sDrive35i (sDrive means rear wheel drive). The 30i is distinguished by the black vanes in the grille and a silver slash across the outer lower bars, while the 35i has matte-silver grille vanes. The sDrive30i (18/25) starts at $45,750 and comes with a 255-hp 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission; a six-speed sport automatic with paddle shifters is an option for an extra $1,325. The sDrive35i (17/25 mpg) is a bit pricier at $51,650, but you get a little more bang for your buck. It comes with a 300-hp 3.0liter inline six with twin turbochargers and is mated to a six-speed manual tranny, with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox as an option for an extra $1,525. As for comparables, the new Z4 is a slightly longer than the Mercedes-Benz SLK and Audi TT, but shorter than the Porsche Boxster. The sport seats are tight, but comfortable and there is plenty of room for two adults. The head and legroom really are quite spacious for a two-seat sports car and the standard manual seats and tilt-telescoping steering column allow for enough

adjustment to accommodate most drivers. On the inside, everything is driverfocused, with easy-to-read white-on-black analog instrumentation, functional controls and a nice combination of sport and elegance. The 30i comes with black leatherette upholstery, while the 35i offers real leather and four color options. Low-gloss brushed aluminum or ash wood trim is standard on the 35i and may be ordered for the 30i.
Audio options include HD radio, satellite radio, glovebox-mounted six-disc DVD changer, iPod and USB ports and a sound system with 14 speakers and an amplifier capable of delivering 650 watts.

Please, don’t feed the bears! BY RODNEY BARRETO Chairman, Florida Freshwater Fish & Wildlife Commission
Here’s a news flash: Florida black bears do den in the winter and prepare for the cooler temperatures by loading up on calories. That’s why we’re hearing and reading about bears in neighborhoods encountering humans more than during other times of the year. Bears are eating machines during autumn. From now until sometime in December, most of our bears will be out foraging for whatever they can find — berries, bugs, acorns and our garbage, if it’s available. They’ll also devour cat food and dog food if left out in the open. This feeding craze is called hyperphagia. Black bears forage for up to 18 hours a day, sometimes consuming 20,000 calories. The black bear may seem slow, but bears are pretty smart. Why bother with the berry bush when the remnants of last night’s pizza sits tantalizingly available in an unsecured garbage can brought out to the curb the night before pickup? No wonder black bears wander into neighborhoods. The dog food out on the screened porch at the neighbor’s house is going to provide many more calories than the small acorns in the backyard. Easy pickings, for sure; but is it good for the bear? Is it good for us? The answer to both questions is an emphatic “No.” Bears want to and should be in the wild, where they will find the food they need for the winter months. And we certainly will be better off without a large wild animal wandering near our children and our pets. Sometimes folks refer to humanbear conflicts as the “bear problem.” As I see it, bears don’t have a problem – they just have a natural instinct to load up on food. In fact, I admire their resourcefulness in finding the easiest source by using their finely tuned sense of smell. Anything from grease to scented candles can attract the bear, and an unsecured garbage can is an easy target for an even easier meal. Today, 2,500 to 3,000 bears roam
FWC REPOR T Florida, but the species remains threatened. While habitat loss and fragmentation are well-documented in Florida, there are still wild areas for bears to roam. Bears will stay in the woods, if there is no reason to come out. While wildlife-resistant containers are an excellent tool in reducing conflicts, the cans are expensive, and they are often not available for individual purchase. It falls to the waste service provider to take on those extra costs to offer some relief to their customers. In Franklin County in the Panhandle, Waste Pro voluntarily ordered the wildlife-resistant cans and began distributing them to interested residents for a small monthly fee. We’re hoping other waste service providers around the state will follow their example. In residential neighborhoods where food is easy to get, residents face a two-fold problem. They are responsible for cleaning up the mess made by the wildlife, and they face close encounters with wild animals. You can minimize or eliminate these problems by securing attractants such as garbage in wildlife-resistant containers and by removing or cleaning up other attractants in the yard. If followed, these simple changes can be successful in protecting the health of Florida’s diverse wildlife and its residents. The FWC is working with waste-service providers, such as Waste Pro, across the state to launch cost-effective solutions to this shared problem. For more information on wildliferesistant containers and to find out what you can do to avoid bear conflicts, go to <MyFWC.com/Bear>. Call your local waste service provider and ask the company to provide the cans that will help keep bears where they belong – in the wild. Rodney Barreto is chairman of the Florida Freshwater Fish and Game Commission and a principle in the Coral Gables firm of Barreto Cunningham May Dudley Maloy. He may be contacted by addressing email to <Rbarreto@bcmpartners.com>.

Leslie Saiontz had a change of heart in 1984 BY ROBIN KORTH That was around the time that both her first child and the idea for Kidding Around, her children’s clothing and accessories boutique, were born. Up until then Leslie was a young but driven real-estate broker in Miami, looking for, and making, residential apartment deals. Saiontz, a Harvard-educated native Miamian, was a commercial real estate professional, managing more than 20 office buildings on Miami Beach at the start of the 1980s real estate boom. Married, but not on the “baby track,” she was stunned that her newborn had stolen her heart at first glance. She was done for. Good-bye real estate career, hello entrepreneurship. Armed with the idea to open her own retail shop, she decided to learn the business and take a job at a small children’s store in Coconut Grove. Within weeks of her arrival, she found herself as manager, gaining indepth experience that would be invaluable for her future plan. The seeds for a child-oriented business had been sown and the real work would soon begin. Fate intervened to create the opportunity of The Falls, a tropical open-air complex that was the first of its kind in South Florida. Leslie first contemplated opening at the illfated Bakery Center but made a wise decision to instead move to The Falls Shopping Center. Bloomingdale’s became the mall’s first anchor in 1984, and Kidding Around opened its doors that same year. Kidding Around quickly developed a reputation as the “go to” shop for beautiful clothing and accessories for babies through tweens. Building on her early success, Saiontz soon opened Running Around, to add high-quality children’s shoes to her retail offerings at The Falls. For 25 years, the businesses have thrived, and have been a vibrant and vital part of the community, giving back to those most in need. Saiontz’s credo is a simple one: if you care,
Women Mean Business then you give. The Kidding Around Foundation was formed in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew and supports children’s charities: a partnership with Soles 4 Souls is ongoing, as is the collection of used clothing and shoes at the store for distribution to those in need. Her support of children’s causes is extensive and generous. There’s rarely a school silent auction or raffle where there’s not an item from Kidding Around or Running Around, compliments of the stores. In addition to her many philanthropic activities, Saiontz pays special attention to educational causes. A board member of Teach For America, it’s just one of her efforts to increase educational opportunities in America, and her office wall bears hand drawn posters and plaques alike, offering thanks for her support. The key to her success? She has a wellorganized list: • Do something you love. Be proud of it and stay committed to it through the good and bad times. • Be open to change; take risks and try things. • Be a business “person” not a business “woman.” Being a woman is not a handicap – you can be tough and demanding without giving up your feminine side. • Make your business a united effort; embrace your employees so through training and experience they reflect your vision. • Community is important — be involved, and your community will support you. • Keep your family involved; it’s more than business, it’s your life.

Local veterinarian community activist and mentor Dr. Sharon MacIVor Bauer BY LEE STEPHENS Women who choose careers in veterinary medicine enjoy both professional and personal success. Historically, this career has belonged to the world of men. Today women comprise almost 70 percent of Dr. Sharon MacIVor the graduating classes of Bauer, D.V.M. our nation's 27 veterinary schools. Why this shift continues to grow can be answered by local veterinarian Sharon MacIvor Bauer, D.V.M. “Women are entering the veterinary medicine field in greater numbers because it offers flexible work hours and many opportunities to expand into other fields,” says Dr. Sharon MacIvor Bauer. As the practice manager and owner of Dadeland Animal Hospital, Dr. MacIvor Bauer wears many hats. Her daily routine of hospital rounds combined with surgeries and emergencies can be hectic. Her hand-picked staff of college students and veterinarian technicians keeps things running smoothly. MacIvor Bauer says, “I aspire to nurture and care for my staff as well as my patients. Staff members are encouraged to attend seminars and continue their education. It is really great when a former kennel tech returns to me as a veterinarian!”
Dealing with sick pets and their worried owners is stressful and demanding. MacIvor Bauer believes that the skill sets developed as the parent of two teenagers are invaluable. “Traditionally women are caregivers and natural instincts kick in when the going gets rough. Calming fears and repairing broken bones is second nature after years of training and experience,” MacIvor Bauer says. In addition to managing Dadeland Animal Hospital and the new Pet Daycare set to open in December, Dr. MacIvor Bauer serves on many charitable organizations, boards and committees. MacIvor Bauer is actively involved with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Special Olympics and Feasts for the Beasts at Metro Zoo. She also was recently elected to the Board of Directors for Miami Metro Zoo. A steward of St. Louis Catholic church, she also ministers to the poor and elderly. An American Veterinary Medical Association Member for more than 20 years, Dr. Mac Ivor Bauer is also a member of the American Association of Feline Practitioners, the Florida Veterinary Medical Association and the South Florida Veterinary Association.

Relief for Excessive Sweating BY SONIA MARTINEZ, RPH
Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a socially embarrassing disorder that can affect the soles of the hands and feet, armpits, and face and scalp. Glycopyrrolate is a medication that can be compounded as a solution or cream that can be applied topically, and has been shown to be effective in the treatment of hyperhidrosis after other treatments were ineffective. Facial gustatory sweating (also called Frey's syndrome) is a fairly common problem associated with diabetes mellitus. Commercial topical antiperspirants have produced limited benefits, and when this sweating is treated with oral drugs known as “anticholinergics”, unacceptable side effects frequently result. The application of 1% Glycopyrrolate roll-on lotion and cream completely controlled gustatory sweating for 3 days, and had very few side effects. Studies

have concluded that topical application of Glycopyrrolate is safe, effective and convenient. Generally, patients tolerate the preparation well, although some patients have reported side effects of blurred vision and dry mouth. Ask our compounding pharmacist for more information. Additionally, some attorneys either bill their association clients up front or at some other stage of the collection matter instead of deferring such legal fees until the matter is successfully concluded and the association also receives its money. While smaller practitioners may need to bill their clients up front or along the way in order to cover overhead expenses and other financial needs, the irony is that most associations in this market cannot afford to pay any legal fees (which is why they need a good collection attorney in the first place) and therefore should consider finding an attorney who agrees to defer all of their legal fees until such legal fees are fully collected from the debtor or the lender. Additionally, having to pay legal fees up front or along the way is actually a deterrent to many associations from even pursuing advisable legal remedies such as filing their own association foreclosures against delinquent owners (instead of just waiting for the lenders to come through) because the legal fees are cost prohibitive.
the
WEIGHT IS OVER.
Some naïve attorneys also allow lenders’ counsel to convince them that the statutory cap for a qualified first mortgagee (who completes a foreclosure against its borrower) also includes a cap on the association’s legal fees and costs. It does not. Such statutory caps, if applicable, only apply to “assessments” and, as such, the legal fees and costs are all recoverable in addition to the capped amount of assessments due from the prior owner. If the Florida Legislature had intended to cap legal fees and costs for qualified first mortgage holders, it would have stated so in one client • one trainer • one goal the applicable statute. Practically speaking, this also could not have been the intent because the legal fees and costs are typically more than the statutory cap in the first place, which would mean that if the legal fees were capped, the association would not only typically get nothing (because the fees would be greater than the assessments due), 305-665-3694 • scottbaumann@fitnesstogether.com but would possibly leave the association upside down owing an additional balance to the attorney, in which case no association would be able to hire an attorney for such purpose. Is Your Association Attorney If your homeowners or condominium association attorney is taking their legal fees and costs out of your assessments they are collecting (or only collecting the assessments due to the association and then billing the association without collecting such fees and costs on top of the association assessments), then you may want to consider finding a new attorney. Florida Statutes and most association governing documents protect an attorney’s right to collect his or her legal fees and costs in addition to the assessments due to the association. Therefore, if the attorney only collects the assessment amount for the association and then separately bills the association for their legal fees (which fees, in some cases, may be more than the actual assessments collected) then, in essence, the attorney has taken their fees out of the association’s money instead of taking advantage of the association’s legal right to collect all of its legal fees and costs in addition to the assessments.
