ONE OF MIAMI’S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS
Who will they force out of Coral Reef Park next? BY GRANT MILLER Publisher There are times when I just can’t look away and ignore an issue, particularly when it’s one that involves children. In this instance, the issue is between the Broncos football and cheerleading youth organization and the Village of Palmetto Bay. In fact, it calls to mind the celebrated quote about 1945 Nazi Germany made by the great Pastor Martin Niemöller. He said: First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a socialist; Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a trade unionist; Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew; Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me. The lesson here is that if we do not speak out when we see an injustice, then we have no one but ourselves to blame when that injustice ultimately affects us personally. And, frankly, I think that what Palmetto Bay is doing to the Broncos is just wrong. Period! In the next few weeks, the Broncos Football & Cheerleading youth organization that has been serving South Dade’s youth for more than 35 years will pack up over 400 jerseys, 600 pairs of game pants, 600 pairs of practice pants, 500 shoulder pads, 800 hip pads, 800 pairs of knee and thigh pads, assorted blocking dummies, 400 cheerleader outfits and an untold amount of other equipment. The Broncos will take their gear to an as yet −−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−

unknown storage facility, and quite probably have to look for a new community that will welcome their demographically well-balanced program. I wonder if the county and Palmetto Bay would have straightened out the mitigation issue if the county had been aware that the Broncos were going to be forced out of their home at Coral Reef Park. The agreement between the County and Palmetto Bay clearly states that Palmetto Bay must “serve all the people.” But Palmetto Bay obviously only wants to serve itself. Coral Reef Park was built to serve all the people, not just those who live next door. It is not those residents’ private paradise; it belongs to everyone. I would not be surprised if one of the MiamiDade County Commissioners brings up the mitigation issue once again and discusses the fiasco that is forcing the Broncos organization to consider moving. The Broncos conceivably could sue Palmetto Bay, and possibly the county, but that’s for them to decide. This all began when Palmetto Bay stated that with its master plan a new concession stand was going to be built adjacent to the high school athletic field. Then they changed the plans and decided to locate the concession stand on the land where the building that houses the Broncos’ and the Howard Palmetto Baseball Softball Association stands, a structure that was built over 30 years ago with private funds, according to Tom Smith, the former president of the Kendall Broncos. Palmetto Bay continually finds problems with the building. They say it is below the flood zone and has non-permitted electrical work. So, for no other reason, Palmetto Bay wants to demolish the building. They could have told the Broncos to get the necessary permits to bring the building up to code. And as
Page 3
far as it being located below the flood level, I am sure there are plenty of homes located at the same level. Is Palmetto Bay tearing them down? I don’t think so. At the conclusion of the public meeting, Palmetto Bay flatly refused to consider even evaluating the possibility of updating or modifying the Broncos’ building so the group could continue using it, or even allow the building to be used for any other purpose. They ordered immediate demolition, in spite of the hardship the order created for the Broncos program for the upcoming 2009 season.
Palmetto Bay flatly refused to consider even evaluating the possibility of updating or modifying the Broncos’ building. Palmetto Bay instead suggested that “some portion of the storage space in the proposed new concession/restroom building could possibly be made available to the Broncos at an undetermined price for use on a seasonal basis.” The organization will certainly incur costs for off-site storage and transportation of the equipment at the beginning and end of each season. This is a hardship not faced by any other area Pop Warner teams, including Suniland Optimist where 12-month storage is included in the program’s use of the park. In fact, when the Village of Pinecrest rebuilt Suniland Park, officials met with Suniland Optimist officials and asked them what they needed. Pinecrest included them in the planning of the park, unlike Palmetto Bay officials. So, people, please remember that if you don’t speak up to correct an injustice, then you are allowing it to take place. If you don’t speak up now, who will be forced out of the park next?

ZARA CASTANY In ninth, 10th and 11th grades, Palmetto High School senior Zara Castany spent one day a week at Baptist Hospital volunteering in the errands office. “The best part about volunteering was learning about the hospital,” she says. “I realized they (the hospital) couldn’t work without their volunteers because we did so much.” Castany liked being able to talk to the patients when she delivered food, gifts or flowers. “I thought the best time was going to the maternity ward,” she says. “You got to bring them balloons and gifts. It made them happy.” While in the 11th grade, Castany also tutored children through her church, Kendall United Methodist. She went to the missionary church in Florida City to help elementary students with homework and reading. The children would have to read a chapter a day and finish their homework before going out to play. “When they finished (homework), we would spend time playing soccer or board games,” she says. Castany says she had them read the chapters to her because some of the kids would try to get out of reading by asking the volunteers to read to them. “I also worked there this past summer,” she says. Castany would go to Florida City two
days a week for about six hours a day throughout the summer to work at the enrichment program. That included one day where the kids chose what they wanted to learn. “We taught guitar lessons and they would cook,” Castany says. “It was fun.” A lesson learned this summer was patience. Castany says she learned how each child is an individual and how to work with them. “Even when they give you a hard time, they want you to be there,” she says. “They enjoy your company so much.” Now that school is in full swing, Castany is busy with school related activities. She is co-editor- in-chief (with Andrea Segal) of the Palmetto paper, The Panther. “The Panther is my favorite part of high school,” she says. “It’s the best part of every day. I love talking to kids and putting so much time in producing a newspaper you can be proud of.” She a member of the Social Science Honor Society – she was vice president last year – and a member of Quill and Scroll, the journalism honor society. She is also in Interact, is secretary of the Literary Society and the captain of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl team. “My team has made the semi-finals this year in the regionals,” she says. “We really want to go to the nationals this year. We have a really strong team.” The regional competition is in February and the nationals are in April. For the past three years, Castany has worked with the Page and Messenger program in Tallahassee in the House of Representatives, an opportunity secured by her godfather, State Rep. Juan Zapata. “You got to be on the house floor during the session,” she says. “You got to see lawmakers in action.” As far as college, Castany hopes to major in journalism, following in the footsteps of her aunt, Sara Castany, who is editor-in-chief of Ocean Drive in Espanol. She interned at the magazine for two summers and loves the work. She hopes to attend the University of Florida in the Honors Program or Emory in the Scholars Program. She has also applied to Northwestern and NYU. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

LUCY LI Palmetto High School senior Lucy Li is considered one the top students in her class. Some folks think if the valedictorian system were still in place, she probably would be the school’s number one student. This past summer, Li took part in the Bezos Scholars program in Colorado. She was one of 12 juniors from across the country selected to participate. “We got to attend the Aspen Ideas Festival,” Li says. “There were hundreds of world leaders, scholars and thinkers present and we got to attend sessions with them.” Li says she met world leaders such as former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. “We had breakfast and had conversations about the Bill of Rights,” she says. “There were so many fields offered there — religion, politics, science, medicine. We got to interact with the leaders and listen to their big ideas.” As part of the program, the students were encouraged to return to their hometowns and set up their own ideas festivals. Li says one such festival has been scheduled for March 27 at Fairchild Tropical Gardens. “It’s going to be a debate on the environment and the effects of industry on the South Florida eco-systems,” she says. Students from Palmetto and Southwood Middle Schools will be bused to Fairchild to listen to the debate. Even with all the time she spends studying, Li has accumulated about 860
community service hours, many of them through Painting Smiles, a group she co-founded with two other girls who are now college freshmen. Through Project Smiles, Li paints murals. “Our first was at Kristi House, a center for sexually-abused children in downtown Miami,” she says. “We painted a seascape mural there.” The second mural was at Perrine Elementary where they painted the media center. The painting included walls for the morning announcements, a weather wall and an international scene. “The current project that I’m working on is at Palmetto Elementary,” Li says. “I’m painting the entire library according to the Dewey Decimal System. I’m on top of a scaffold every Friday painting a bunch of panels according to what that section of the library is all about.” Although she is slightly afraid of heights, Li says she’s enjoying the project, even with the necessity of being up on the scaffolds. She says that when the mural is finished, she may paint another at Kristi House. Li and her friends also held two artsand-crafts festivals, one at Perrine Elementary and the other at Palmetto Elementary. The festivals raised $450, which was donated to Kristi House. The paint they used for the murals was purchased with grant money. Li also works on community service projects through Interact, a school service club. She has been a member since her freshman year in high school and this year she is the president. She is continuing with familiar service projects such as working with Neighbors for Neighbors. They plan to work on the Adopt A Family program and buy Christmas gifts for needy families. Interact members will also participate in the Coconut Grove Arts Festival through the Student Ambassadors program. “I’ve been a student ambassador for three years,” Li says. Through Interact, she is working with their sister club, the O Ambassadors, a club that was started by Oprah Winfrey. Li is also the discussion coordinator for the Literary Society, leading the discussions on the books chosen each month. Her favorite books include In Cold Blood by Truman Capote and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

MAX HALASZ Playing baseball doesn’t leave a high school student very much time for community service, but Max Halasz, a ballplayer and a junior at Palmetto High,
still has managed to earn a couple of hundred volunteer hours anyway. Halasz is a pitcher and also plays first base and in the outfield for Palmetto’s varsity team. These days, baseball is a year-round sport, with fall leagues and summer travel teams. Outside of school, Halasz plays for the All American Prospects travel team, which is based in Port St. Lucie and includes players from across the state. Halasz had a good season last spring with the Palmetto Panthers; they made it to the regional semi-finals before being eliminated. “This year we are better than last year and I think we have a very good chance to go to the state final four,” Halasz says, adding that while last year’s team was very young, the players learned a lot. He says they have basically the same team in place again this year, but with a lot more experience. At Palmetto, while baseball takes up a lot of time, the boys also do community service as a team. The biggest event is the President’s Day Baseball Clinic. Each year, the boys teach elementary and mid-
Page 5
dle school students the finer points of playing the game. Halasz says he usually works with the younger kids from six to eight years old. “We’re like group counselors and we take each group from station to station,” he says. At one station, the kids will learn fielding, while at another they might learn the techniques of pitching. “I enjoyed it a lot,” Halasz says. “Possibly in the future, if I’m not playing baseball, then I’d like to be coaching baseball, and hopefully my kid will be playing baseball.” Along with the clinic, the Palmetto baseball team also works six or seven times a year at the concession stand at University of Miami baseball games to raise money for the Palmetto baseball program. On his own, Halasz is planning a ping pong tournament to raise money for autism. “I have two cousins who are profoundly autistic,” he says. “I thought it would be a good way to help them.” One of his cousins had to be put in a YS DA 0 PM N U :0 NS O4 OP E 0 T OM

special home for autistic children and he plans to donate the money to that facility. Halasz is working on the fundraiser with two friends, Alesy Iturrey and Matt Longfield. Other friends have agreed to allow him to borrow their ping pong tables for the event. The idea is to have friends and family pay to enter the tournament. Details are still being worked out, but Halasz hopes to produce the event just after the Winter Break. Halasz is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, the History Honor Society, and Key Club. He has taken part in Plant the Pride, Palmetto’s annual beautification effort. He also participated in the last Walk for Witty. As a junior, Halasz is starting to look at college. He hopes to play baseball on the college level, so his choices may be determined by the schools that recruit him. Schools he would most like to attend include Duke, Georgetown and Columbia. He’s considering a career in architecture or engineering. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

Weekend warriors get help at Pinecrest Physical Therapy BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD Ron Yacoub has been helping Pinecrest area residents with their physical therapy problems since 2004. Yacoub has been in the business for 10 years, starting shortly after he graduated from the University of Miami in 1998 with a Master’s Degree in physical therapy. Yacoub worked for other physical therapy companies, including a stint in North Carolina, before opening his own office. He had quit his job and was trying to decide what to do with his life when a few of his former clients, all professional baseball players, came to him and asked that he resume caring for their aches and pains once again. “I realized I was meant to do this,” Yacoub says. “You get a lot of gratification.” He started out in the backroom of the gym on South Dixie Highway. “I left there; I kind of grew out of it,” he says. It was literally a 100-square-foot room and there was just enough space to have two tables.” Yacoub moved the business to a new location, but soon had to find yet another new location because his business continued to grow. He is now located at 9492 S. Dixie Hwy., where he is working with 2,000 square feet. “Right now I have six therapists,” he says. “And I have my own in-house billing and support staff.” Yacoub says there is plenty of work for him and his therapists, and he says his staff can deal with anyone, from toddlers to 98year-old athletes, and they are known for their positive attitudes and cheery out-

look. He says the staff is the main reason that clients recommend Pinecrest Physical Therapy to their friends. “I foster a teamwork approach,” Yacoub says. “If you come to see me, you’ll get the same treatment from any of our therapists. We know all of our clients.” Having a staff that gets along is very important to Yacoub. He has therapists go through a probationary period before he hires them. “Everyone fits in,” he says. “We’ve spent enough time to know we like them.” One of the first questions he asks is why they want to be physical therapists. “I hire them because they care and they are upset if someone doesn’t get better,” Yacoub says, adding that skill and compassion are equally important for a therapist. The client list at Pinecrest Physical Therapy includes several professional athletes, but Yacoub say it’s the weekend warriors that keep his therapists busy. “We have a pretty good niche with baseball and tennis players,” Yacoub says. His website features testimonials from former Marlins players as well as UM players. “The doctors really like us and we’ve worked so well with shoulder patients,” Yacoub says. “We get a lot of the tougher patients.”
Yacoub says many people come to him with knee injuries, but the more difficult injuries are to the shoulder, back and neck. “We pretty much feel that we’ve seen so many patients with these types of injuries that we’re confident we can help,” he says. Pinecrest Physical Therapy takes AvMed and Medicare. For those who have PPO insurance, Yacoub says they are considered an out-of-network provider. “We work with all the insurances. We try to work with you if there are any issues,” he says. “If you are coming with a good referral source, we’ll work it out.” For information, call 305722-0568 or go to <www.PinecrestPT.com>.

At last, a new restaurant in the Falls Shopping Center! Let me introduce you to Cafe Med, a dining experience that will be enjoyed by all. Entering the restaurant I was first welcomed by a friendly hostess and then the owner himself. The ambiance was warm and yet festive with the magnificent center piece and a Mediterranean blue atmosphere. The aroma escaping the kitchen was tantalizing as we sat at our table. (There are booths to choose from also). The menu starts you off with 12 appetizers consisting of a large variety to choose from. Some examples are eggplant parmigiana, fried mozzarella, bruschetta and shrimp cocktail. I chose the chicken wings which were the best I have ever had! The entrees were equally impressive with 11 salads, 6 dinner sandwiches, 8 thin crust Italian pizzas, 17 pastas and 5 different fish items cooked many different ways. They also have veal and several meat and chicken dishes. You could eat at this restaurant everyday for a month and choose a different item each time. The prices are very reasonable and very affordable for large families. The happy hour is from 3:00-7:00 Monday thru Friday and the appetizers are half off! There is also a cozy back room for private parties and group meetings. The full menu is available for take out and large catering. Finally, a restaurant in the neighborhood where the prices and the choices (along with great tasting) make eating in or taking out an easy decision to make!

says. “They already have a winning formula, so it’s not re-doing it.” The concept behind the Taste of Pinecrest is to raise money for the five public schools that serve Pinecrest children. Simons, former executive director of the Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce, has owned her own company for the last 11 years and focused on organizing festivals and shows, galas, luncheons and fundraising functions for corporate clients. She says there have already been a number of meetings about the Taste of Pinecrest, which takes place in late winter. “We’ve had a restaurant meeting,” Simons says, “and a meeting with the PTA presidents. All have been positive and wonderful.” In fact, Simons says the PTA representatives were open, quite flexible and all quite positive about the need and desire to take the event to the next level. The layout of the food festival is one of the areas that is being studied and Simons says they are looking at placing various booths in new locations. “We’re mixing vendors and the restaurants,” she says. “What it’s doing is creating prime locations. Once you commit, you have your choice of location.” The goal this year is to have 20 restaurants participate in the event. “We’re really trying to improve the marketing angle; we don’t want anyone to lose money,” Simons says, adding that the restaurants that participate are, in a sense, advertising and promoting their own restaurants in their own community. “This is their market, this is who they want to come to the restaurant.” The PBA has also lowered the participation price in hopes of enticing additional eateries. “We’re trying to provide them with more,” Simons says.
“The concept behind the Taste of Pinecrest is to raise money for the five public schools that serve Pinecrest children” Under discussion is the concept of printing restaurant coupons on the back of the event map so the restaurants could track patrons who come to their location. “We’re listening to them,” Simons says. “We’re also in the process of pricing out some things we can provide that will help the restaurants as well.” Simons adds that she always likes to bring creative, fun ideas to the table that give sponsors more exposure and gets the public more involved. The schools are already involved, providing the entertainment with school bands, cheerleading teams and performing arts groups. Last year, the schools received equal amounts of the $31,000 raised by the Taste of Pinecrest. While the event will undergo some changes this year, Simons says there are some long-term goals that have been agreed on, but won’t come into play this year because of time constraints. For example, there will be a student art contest for the upcoming festival and the winning art will be a part of next year’s merchandise for sale. “I want to see a tote bag,” Simons says. “I want to see tee shirts with the artwork.” Another feature to be added in the future is an adult-only cocktail reception that could be located on site. “We’ve got lots of goals like that,” Simons says. This year, however, festival additions will include the addition of a raffle with some “fabulous” prizes.

SFWMD approves funding to restore Chapman Field Park BY NESTOR YGLESIAS The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board recently approved investing additional funds to help restore Chapman Field Park. The project is part of a broad district effort to improve water quality and restore native ecosystems in and around Biscayne Bay. The investment provides Miami-Dade County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM) with $310,246 to continue restoration efforts at the park, which is located along the edge of Biscayne Bay in southern Miami-Dade County. The district previously had provided the county with $580,000 to complete the first phase of the project. Miami-Dade officials are actively restoring impacted wetlands at this and other sites throughout the county in an effort to revive native ecosystems along Biscayne Bay. In addition to restoring the native plant community at the park site, the project will increase the native habitat for animals, birds and fish. The park project is intended to achieve several objectives, including: • Clearing exotic vegetation; • Removing solid waste; • Re-establishing red mangroves; • Restoring historic wildlife habitat, and • Improving water quality in Biscayne Bay “The environmental benefits of projects like this are immense,” said Eric
Buermann, chairman of the District Governing Board. “One of the district’s goals remains to support local governments in their ecosystem restoration efforts that improve water quality in places such as Biscayne Bay, which is beneficial for all of South Florida.” The Chapman Field Park restoration project is just one of many environmental projects the district has supported recently in Miami waterways. Others include: The Miami River Dredging Project. The SFWMD provided more than $4 million to improve navigation of the Miami River and safely dispose of pollutants that threatened the health of the river and Biscayne Bay, into which the river flows. The Virginia Key Wetland Restoration Project. The SFWMD provided $875,000 for a wetland restoration project on Virginia Key. Cleanup of the creeks and ponds improved the water quality of tidal areas that flow into Biscayne Bay. The South Florida Water Management District is a regional, governmental agency that oversees the water resources in the southern half of the state — 16 counties from Orlando to the Keys. It is the oldest and largest of the state’s five water management districts. The agency mission is to manage and protect water resources of the region by balancing and improving water quality, flood control, natural systems and water supply. A key initiative is cleanup and restoration of the Everglades.

When you prepare an offer to purchase a home, be sure that “uninvited guests” don’t appear at the closing. The guests I am talking about are termites, although termite inspections are not always required. A report prepared by a licensed pest control company will show if there is any presence of termite damage or if there is any evidence of treatment for the wood-destroying insects. It isn’t a guarantee that there aren’t any termites present; it only reports visual damage or treatment. Who pays for the inspection? The buyer, to avoid any conflict of interest
by being sure to use a pest control company that is different from the one currently servicing the home. This ultimately protects the seller, too, because if problems show up later, it can be shown that the buyers conducted an independent and objective inspection. Again, understand that the inspection and subsequent report will not prove or disprove the existence of termites, but buyers who ignore this important issue during the purchase process could be asking for trouble later on down the road. If you have any questions or concerns, consult with your real estate agent or your attorney and move forward with confidence.

Palmetto Middle student wins kart racing National Championship BY LEE STEPHENS
Bobby Stevens hoists trophy after winning Easykart 60 Grand National Karting Championship at Homestead Speedway.
Twelve-year-old Palmetto Middle School student Bobby Stevens has won the 2008 Easykart 60 Grand National Karting Championship. The three-day event was held at Homestead Speedway and drew racers from the across the U.S., Canada, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. The Easykart Series is made up of five classes of Spec karts and racers based on age. The spec designation means all karts use the same components, with emphasis on driving ability. The Grand National Championship is an annual event and is the culmination of 12 months of local, regional or state races. In order to compete for the Championship drivers must participate in a minimum of three races at one of many venues. The Grand Prize is an all-expensespaid trip to Italy to represent the U.S. in the World Finals. While
Stevens behind the wheel of an Easykart spec racer during a recent race.
Stevens won the prize, he has elected not to participate in the World Finals because of school commitments. Stevens began racing karts when he was eight years old. Over the last four years, he has won two Homestead Karting regional championships and also won the World Karting Association
Florida Championship in 2007. Easykart is an international competition based on an Italian chassis made by Birel with an IAME two-stroke engine. Engines are sealed and gear ratios, tires and all components are identical. For more information, call Tony Schroeder of Homestead Karting 305-469-6188.

Beth Am Temple Talk Kislak Fund grant sends Temple into community BY LEE STEPHENS Thanks to a grant from the Kislak Fund for Innovative Programming at Temple Beth Am, Rabbi Lorraine Rudenberg is taking Judaism out into the South Dade Jewish community. Rabbi Rudenberg hopes to reach out to unaffiliated Jews on a more personal and non-threatening level. “Rather than asking them to come to us, we are going to them,” Rudenberg said. “We want people to understand Judaism can be found anywhere and that living Jewishly can enhance one’s life.” By reaching out into the community, Rudenberg hopes to awaken a sense of Jewishness and spirituality in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Her goal is to encourage Jewish growth outside of traditional congregational walls that is warm, accessible and, perhaps, less intimidating. Through this effort, Rudenberg hopes to engage Jews in a more active and meaningful relationship with their heritage and values to feel a greater sense of place and belonging within the greater Jewish community. Programs begin on Saturday morning, Jan. 17, at 10 a.m., and again on Feb. 7, when Rudenberg will lead an informal Shabbat service in the Hammock Oaks at Coral Reef Park. There will be contemporary Jewish music that is easy to learn and enjoy, along with Jewish prayer that is spiritually uplifting. Under the beautiful South Florida morning sun, this Shabbat experience is a terrific way for the whole family to start the day and reconnect with their Jewish heritage.
Rabbi Lorraine Rudenberg
We will meet at the playground by the picnic tables between Coral Reef Elementary and the tennis courts. Rudenberg also will teach three classes at the Alper JCC that are free and open to the community. The classes will be interactive, with plenty of time for discussion, sharing and questions. Classes start at 9:15 a.m. The dates and topics are: Jan. 22 — Talking to Childr en about God How to talk to your children about God without fear and superstition. Feb. 12 — Raising Inter faith Childr en The unique challenges and blessings of raising children in two faiths Mar c h 5 — M o s e s a n d R u t h ; Inter f a i t h F a m i l i e s i n t h e B i b l e Ancient wisdom for today’s modern world.

New laser surgery procedure reduces scars BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD Dr. Martin Sachs has trained in ophthalmology, internal medicine, infectious disease and immunology. He is an expert in liposuction and is the founder of the Sculptra Skin and Laser Center, which offers procedures using Syneron’s LipoLite Laser. “I’ve been doing surgery for 20 years,” Dr. Sachs says, adding that two years ago he began specializing in cosmetic surgery. He is well known for his work in immunology and his research into how the skin heals and fights infection. He says his broad-based practice helped him develop a new procedure that reduces scarring. “Nobody else does this procedure and it’s incredibly effective,” he says. “It’s all done under local anesthesia.” In the past, reducing scars was an invasive procedure and it didn’t take care of the entire scar, such as those from C-Sections. But the new procedure results in a 90 percent improvement without the danger or the down time. According to Sachs, the new two-part procedure came out of a careful study
Dr. Martin Sachs
of the anatomy and physiology of scar formation and the emergence of cutting-edge technology such as Syneron’s ELOS (electric-optical synergy) equipment. Basically, it melts the adhesions,
blasts off the top of the scar, then shaves off most of the rest of it. “I make an incision and I infuse Lanicaine under the scar through the fat layer,” Sachs says. “Then I put the laser into the fat layer and melt all the adhesions that are holding the scar to the fat and muscle underneath the scar. That lifts the scar off.” He says by lifting the scar 40-50 percent of the discoloration disappears. “In part two, I take a new type of laser. It actually destroys skin,” he says. “I shave off the top of the scar.” Part two takes place two to three weeks after the first session. “When that is done, about 70-90 percent of the scar is gone,” he says. Sachs says he noticed after doing a lot of liposuction that abdominal incisions got better after the liposuction. He asked for volunteers and developed the procedure. The effectiveness has been documented and is now available to the general public. The procedure is so new and so interesting that Sachs has been written up in Aesthetic Magazine. “I’ve been doing this procedure for about six months,” he says. “It can be
done on any scar, any place on the body, including the face. If a women wants to come in and have a C-Section scar removed, it’s actually an easy procedure. This, in a sense, has revolutionized scar revision surgery.” Sachs says even better, the procedure causes little pain. Those who have had the surgery say the site might ache and while he gives pain medication prescriptions to the patients, few of them actually fill the prescription. “Its pain free in the majority of patients and those who experience pain, it’s very minor in nature,” he says. “There is no downtime at all. They next day, postoperatively, you’re back in the gym. Probably some people will take two to three days but you can go back to the gym.” Best of all, there is no stitching because there is only a single one-millimeter incision. “It’s extremely small,” he says. “That’s one of the reasons the procedure is safe.” The Sculptura Skin and Laser Center is located in downtown Miami at 150 SE 2nd Ave. For more information, call 305-3725974.

It’s wonderful living in a ‘limo-available’ country BY ED THOMPSON

When was the last time you rode in a limo? I asked this question to my office staff the other day because my son, David, recently had ridden in a limo to his school homecoming party. I had asked him how he was planning on getting to the party, since as a typical teenager he seems to be under the impression that his parents are sitting around anxiously waiting for opportunities to jump up at a moment’s notice and drive him where ever he wants to go. David simply shrugged and said, “We’re taking a limo.” Now, one may think this sort of matterof-fact answer would shock me. David, however, is my youngest child, meaning I’ve been through this twice before. So his matter-of-fact comment about a fancy limo taking him to a party got my standard answer, “Oh?” “Oh?” by the way, is a great answer to almost anything a teenager says. You have to say it as a question, of course, which not only does it cause the teenager to elaborate, but it’s a great delay tactic giving your brain a chance to race through variables associated with their irrational comments, most of which will have something to do with time and money. “Yes,” David replied in a low teenage mumble, “a group of us are taking a limo.” Now, the last thing I want to spend money on is a limo ride to a homecoming party, so I gave him my, “Do I look like Donald Trump?” scowl. This caused David to quickly mumble, “Don’t worry Dad, the limo isn’t going to cost us anything.” To which I immediately perked up and said, “Wow, a limo! That’s sounds like a lot of fun.” But I started thinking about this whole limo concept. I mean, with the exception of politicians and the Donald Trumps of this world, limos are used when you want (and can afford) to do something extravagant and special. In my impromptu office survey, for example, the only limo rides taken were at weddings, and neither was mine. I couldn’t help but consider the stark contrast of living in a “limo-available” country and a very special mission trip I was able to take last month to Cuba. Now, I suspect there are a few limos somewhere in Cuba, but it is definitely not a “limoavailable” place. A group of us was able to take some
THAT’S LIFE relief supplies into Cuba after Hurricane Ike tore across the country. We had the privilege of visiting some homes and churches of local pastors. One pastor’s family and home particularly sticks out in my mind. They were a handsome family. They stood in the front of their little church and smiled at us and we smiled back. Beautiful little girls holding hands, well groomed, cute dresses; beautiful. Their house church, which perhaps could seat 20 if everyone squeezed in tight, somehow filled up with over 60 each Sunday. Behind a curtain in the front of the church was their home. After apologizing for the “mess,” they graciously allowed us to walk around; it didn’t take long. Two sparse bedrooms, a closet for a kitchen — which had a sink and nothing I could see that resembled a stove — and a bathroom whose mirror was a few shards of glass, and empty closets. Our talkative group went silent as we saw the true picture of their situation. There were no limos here. While we thought no one else was looking, several of us left cash gifts to help out. We also were able to provide gifts of clothes and even some handmade dolls for the girls lovingly given by a grandma in California. It felt good to help, even though we knew it will all be used up soon. A few days later, I was back in my beautiful “limo-available” country and my Miami home, which featured such luxury items as a working stove, complete mirrors in the bathrooms and closets full of clothes. I looked at my well-fed and happy family and couldn’t help but say a prayer of “thanks” to a gracious God who, for reasons I’ll never understand, allowed me to be born and live in this amazing country. While we certainly have our troubles, I love living in a “limo-available” country. I may never splurge for one, but I like the idea that I could. It means I live in a country where God has blessed me with far more than just life’s essentials. It also means I can joyfully and willingly help others in need and, of course, opportunities to do just that are everywhere. Happy Thanksgiving!

Vice president of development named by Zoological Society BY CINDY CASTELBLANCO The Zoological Society of Florida (ZSF), the support arm of Miami Metrozoo, recently announced that Cindy Eisaman has been appointed vice president of development. For the past five years Eisaman was the successful director of development at the Community Partnership for the Homeless. Previously she worked on Avon’s Breast Cancer Three-Day Event in the same capacity. “It is a wonderful pleasure to welcome Cindy as the new vice president of development here at the ZSF,” said president and CEO Nestor Rodriguez. “She is an expert fundraiser having surpassed her financial goals for the Community Partnership for the Homeless in her first year there. I’m assured that Cindy will create new and exciting fundraising programs for the ZSF while also maintaining our donor relations and generating many new supporters. “Our goals for the new Amazon and Beyond exhibit, set to open on Dec. 6, will be met with the aid of our staffs’ determination and the knowledge of Cindy’s past experiences.” In her new position, Eisaman will secure long-term financial support to meet the goals of Miami Metrozoo and the ZSF. She will work closely with Nestor Rodriguez and the Development Committee of the board of directors to generate a comprehensive development program that consists of annual funds, corporate and foundation giving, and special events. She will be responsible for directing ZSF staff in evaluations, setting performance objectives, and providing guidance and training. Eisaman will prepare the ZSF’s strategic plan and budget each year for fundraising objectives, as well as supervising budgets in all areas. She also will develop and maintain a system of donor records that will integrate timely gift acknowledgments and appropriate recognition of the ZSF’s donors. “Considering the current state of our environment, I am confident that our community will be proud to support an organization that encourages an appreciation for the world’s wildlife and helps conserve it for future generations,” Eisaman said. “The generous philanthropists that I know are conscious of the threats to nature and want to help make a positive

Today it is one of the largest membership organizations in South Florida, with some 50,000 members. Its activities and programs include marketing, volunteer services, educational programs, special events and member programming. Its mission is to encourage an appreciation for the world’s wildlife and to help conserve it for future generations. Miami Metrozoo houses more than 1,200 animals in a cageless setting that approximates the animals’ natural habitats and provides visitors the feel of a safari. Large open air exhibits, the Samburu Giraffe Feeding Station, Humpy’s Camel Rides, Diego’s Discovery Den Show, the Wildlife Show, tram tours, family bicycles, a monorail and interactive exhibits make Miami Metrozoo a unique experience for visitors of all ages. Deck the halls with safety this season BY GAYANE STEPANIAN The holidays are among the most exciting times of the year when families join together to celebrate and enjoy the festivities. For many of us, it also means more time in the kitchen, around the tree, or decorating the house with candles. Yet, tragically, each holiday season more than 400 Americans are killed and thousands more are injured due to fires, burns and poisonings. Make sure your holiday season is all fun and your family is safe by following these important tips. It’s important that you play your part to practice holiday safety. Holiday lights — Check all of your lights, both old and new, before hanging them on your tree or home. Check for frayed wires, broken and cracked sockets or loose connections. Make sure that if you hang lights outside, they are approved for outdoor use. Before you go to bed or leave the house for an extended period of time, turn off the lights to prevent the possibility of a fire. Never use electric lights on a metallic tree because if the tree becomes charged with electricity from faulty lights, a person or animal could be electrocuted. Take extra precaution when linking strands of lights so that you do not overload electrical outlets. Unless the directions in the box say that it is safe, do not link more than three light strands. Before plugging the cord into the outlet, connect the strands of lights to an extension cord. Also, check on the wire periodically – it should NOT be warm when you touch it. Holiday trees — When setting up your tree at home, place it away from fireplaces, radiators or portable heaters. To prevent a live tree from becoming a fire hazard due to dryness, cut off a few inches of the trunk to expose fresh wood to allow for better water absorption, and make sure you fill your tree stand with water each day. When purchasing an artificial tree, ensure it is labeled as “fire resistant.” Kitchen — Before letting your children get their hands into the cookie dough, consider some important facts: In a one-year period, there were over 500 emergency room visits and over 30 hospitalizations due to child related burns in Miami-Dade County alone. Boiling and scalding liquids are com-
JACKSON HEALTH BEAT mon causes of burns. Children between the ages of one through four are most at risk. It’s a good idea to set some simple kitchen safety rules in your home that are age- and developmentally-appropriate for your children. If your child is too young to help out, enforce a “kid-free zone” three feet around the stove and oven or make your kitchen is off limits. Avoid carrying infants or toddlers while cooking or sipping hot cocoa or other hot drinks. Store chemicals, medicines and sharp utensils in a locked kitchen cabinet and out of reach. If you would like some extra helping hands in the kitchen, most children under the age of 10 can help with scooping, mixing and sifting ingredients and, of course, decorating pastries. Little helpers can also wash fruits and vegetables. Just remember to tell them which dishes are hot and that only adults handle hot pots and plates and sharp utensils. Children age 13 and older can take on more responsibility in the kitchen, just make sure they have adult supervision until they learn how to safely operate the stove, oven and handle sharp utensils and hot plates or pots. Candles — If you have small children, avoid placing candles on top of table cloths or table runners. Children can easily pull on a table cloth or table runner and get burned or start a fire. Keep candles away from curtains and lamp shades and make sure all candles are blown out before you go to sleep. Fireplaces — The fireplace should be clear of all plants and any other paper items such as bows, wrapping paper and decorations to avoid a fire. Also, do not burn wrapping paper leftover from holiday gifts in the fireplace. When wrapping ignites suddenly, it can cause flash fires. Why you should consider long-term care insurance in your retirement plan BY RICHARD MILLER Insurance If you haven’t already done so, now is an excellent time to consider adding long-term care insurance to your retirement portfolio. Because uninsured long-term care expenses can pose a significant risk to the assets you’ve worked a lifetime to accumulate, longterm care insurance should be considered as part of a complete financial plan. The likelihood that you may need long-term care is significant. And while long-term care includes a broad range of services, from in-home care to nursing home care, each comes at a cost. Those costs could be substantial, and could have a significant adverse effect on your retirement portfolio. Why? Most forms of health insurance focus on medical expenses, not the custodial care and non-medical expenses associated with long-term care. Medicare only covers nursing home care after a related three-day inpatient hospital stay and even then for only 20 days before a daily co-payment is assessed, and Medicaid doesn’t kick in until one has spent down almost all of one’s assets. So, if either you or your spouse needs long-term care, you may have to pay for that care out of your accumulated assets, unless you have long-term care insurance. According to the 2008 Genworth Financial Cost of Care Survey (conducted by CareScout), having a home health aide for just eight hours per day at the average rate of $17 per hour would cost almost $50,000 per year. And if you needed more care, the cost just goes up.
At those rates, it’s easy to see how longterm care costs could deplete retirement income and invade assets accumulated over a lifetime if one partner needs such care. Let’s use a hypothetical couple living off the interest of $500,000 of invested assets to illustrate how serious an impact long-term care expenses could have. For the sake of this discussion, assume the couples’ investments are earning approximately eight percent annually, generating about $40,000 per year in income. Let’s also presume this couple needs all of this income to support them while they’re living together in their home. Based on a very modest $50,000 estimated annual cost for part-time home care, it may appear that this couple has enough for about 10 years of care. However, that basic calculation does not consider the normal living expenses that are still there. If this couple is using all of their investment income to provide for their living expenses, they will soon need to start withdrawing from the principle for a portion of those living expenses as well as for the long-term care expenses of the partner who needs care. In circumstances like these, it’s easy to see how the assets accumulated over a lifetime could soon be completely exhausted. Long-term care insurance can help provide the funds to pay for the care you may need, while simultaneously protecting the assets you’ve worked a lifetime to accumulate. Longterm care insurance may also help preserve financial independence, choice, and dignity, and those can be priceless.
Richard Miller is a licensed long-term care insurance agent representing Genworth Financial.

Greater Miami Youth Symphony
BY CHRISTINE MOROS The Greater Miami Youth Symphony orchestra will play its annual winter concert at Old Cutler Presbyterian Church, 14401 Old Cutler Rd., at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children. The concert will feature GMYS music director Huifang Chen and Ross Harbough as guest artist. Chen and Harbough are professors of music at the University of Miami Frost School of Music and are internationally recognized performers and teachers. Harbough will perform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme for cello. The orchestra will perform works by Saint-Saens, Mascagni and RimskyKorsakov, as well as many traditional holiday classics. Chamber ensembles will play a variety of classical works. Founded as the All-Miami Youth Symphony by Robert Strassburg in 1958, the Greater Miami Youth
Symphony was created to foster a love of music in young people and to enrich the cultural life of the community. GMYS is an independent five-level orchestra program dedicated to training young musicians between 5 and 18 years old. Conceived as a complementary facet to musical instruction in the schools, GMYS has continuously succeeded in presenting high caliber performances and outreach presentations to South Florida audiences. Programs include eight free beginning instrument classes funded by The Childrens Trust that feed into the orchestra program, as well as a comprehensive threelevel music summer camp. GMYS is a community project and the public is invited to participate as parents, musicians or sponsors. Juiceblendz combines healthy ingredients and great taste BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD Juiceblendz has become a favorite after-school gathering place for many Pinecrest youngsters because of the healthy menu offerings. Many Pinecrest teens visit the Suniland Juiceblendz, at 1140 S. Dixie Hwy., then come back later with their moms and dads. It’s that kind of loyalty that partners Kerry Burns and Charles Clayton hope to increase by expanding their outreach to a variety of community events with their sampling program. “The biggest thing is the healthiness of the product and the great taste,” Burns says. “And even the ones that are high in calories are still low compared to fast foods.” Burns says the smoothies are a healthy alternative to other snack foods and they can serve as replacement meals. Smoothies also are good for people interested in losing weight because many are low in calories. Best of all, the smoothies are made from natural ingredients and not from pre-made mixes. “We don’t offer smoothie mixes or puree,” Clayton says. “We have all natural ingredients. Smoothies are made with low-fat yogurt and some are made with soy milk.” Juiceblendz is a popular hangout after school for kids of all ages. Some parents bring their elementary school children straight from school so they can have something to eat before they start their afternoon activities. “We get a lot of people who come here before they go work out,” Burns says. Although Juiceblendz has been around for a couple of

years, now is when the owners are getting involved in more and more community activities. They sponsored the Heart Walk and gave out samples and they are getting involved in charity fundraisers. They did the Westminster football games and homecoming and they are now involved with the Museum of Science. “We’re really out in the community,” Clayton says. “We give a portion of the profits to the charity.” Burns says Juiceblendz is still in its infancy and will continue to grow as a healthy place for a snack or a meal, with the addition of wraps. The Juiceblendz smoothie menu includes items such as Go Bananas — a blend of bananas, skim milk and fat-free frozen yogurt — and the Immunizer, made with freshsqueezed orange juice, bananas and strawberries, along with an herbal combination of Multiplex, which includes Echinacea and Vitamin C. There’s also the Marathoner, which comes with blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, orange juice and Multiplex. For someone suffering the after effects of indulging in too much alcohol, there is the Hangover Healer, with orange juice, bananas, strawberries, Multiplex and Glycerol. The D.A.R.E program shows you how to be healthy in the mind and in your body by saying, “No!” Being healthy is the key to everything in life because without health, you can’t be happy. Without health you can’t get a job or go to certain schools, and if you can’t get a job you can’t raise a happy, healthy family. Saying “No!” is a small word, but a very powerful one. God created your body in his own image and he wants you to take care of it. He doesn’t want you to destroy your body and harm others or even talk them into doing drugs. Throughout the last weeks I have learned about the power of “No.” “No” can be said alone and still be as powerful as Superman. Before you say “yes” think about what you are agreeing with. “Yes” can also be a very powerful syllable and can get you into trouble you may not be able to get out of. Super powers don’t only come from super heroes but come from the people who have the power to say “no” to drugs. Being strong on the outside is to be fit, and to be able to carry heavy objects. To me, being strong is also being strong in the mind. “No” can be a difficult word to say at times because of what your friends or others may think or say of you. Being strong means you have the power to lift up your voice and say “No” like you mean it. The dictionary defines drug as “an extremely harmful substance that affects the nervous system. Drugs can become habit-forming and cause death.” Why would somebody want to do such harm to their body? I have learned about the different effects drugs can have on us and how they can cause harm, change and even death. Drugs cause harm to your throat, teeth, organs, lips, unborn babies and the rest of your body. One dip, sniff, chew or whatever the person does once will change the person for the rest of his/her life. Smoking causes your lungs to become black and then cancer spots grow as quickly as mold. Even when you stop smoking, the damage never goes away. When you drink alcohol you can drink too much and get drunk. Thousands of people get killed every year by getting in a car accident with a drunk driver or being in a car driven by a drunk driver. Second-hand smoke can hurt kids, grownups and seniors even if they are 10 feet away from a cigarette and have never smoked. The wind takes the smoke like a balloon and it gets sucked in by your
D.A.R.E Essay mouth and nose and it heads strait to your lungs. The tar and all the bad chemicals in the smoke also can create danger to your body, as if you were the one smoking. A smoker not only harms himself, but also the innocent people around him. There are so many advertisements all around you, that you have gotten so used to them that you don’t even notice they are there unless you look carefully for them. The companies that make cigarettes and alcohol are trying to attract kids at an early age by using bright colors and putting ads near places where children hangout. They need to find ways to continue making big money. The company tries to put things on little kids bibs, toys and stuffed animals. Alcohol commercials try to make it look like having a drink is like throwing a party. They also use popular figures such as rock bands, TV show stars and movie actresses to encourage the kids to use the product because they like that actress, band, or singer and they want to be like them. Some companies pay actresses to smoke or do a type of drug in movies. They use words that make things sound like they taste good, and are southing. Companies are smart and try everything just to get the kids. The kids grow up and they become the next users of their products. Drug education is needed throughout America and the world so maybe kids will ignore the messages sent by these greedy companies. Why do they want to do this to kids? Again, they want money and the nicotine gets them addicted since they are young because they are told by the ads that smoking is cool and they probably get so addicted that they keep going until their early death. Drugs can be harmful. Drugs are dangerous. I know that, but do you know that? Advertisements are putting pressure on kids every day. Kids watch their parents drinking and having a good time during parties. They are thinking of trying that, but they do not know about the trouble they are putting themselves through. The advertisement of companies whose products are going to harm me won’t catch me smoking. I won’t let them harm me. I will be strong and care about my body and help my friends through tough times so they too will say “no”!

BY BAY PROBY In the spirit of art appreciation and our youth, the Turnberry Bank Young Artists series was officially launched at the bank’s Pinecrest office earlier this month featuring 14 student artists from Gulliver Preparatory School. Approximately 50 people attended the affair, held from 6-8 p.m. “We are delighted to showcase the talents of these young artists from Gulliver Preparatory School,” said Adam Hellman, Turnberry Bank vice president and Pinecrest branch manager. “We welcome everyone – customers and general public alike – to stop by and see the artwork.” The students’ artwork will be on display for the next three weeks in the bank office at 9579 S. Dixie Hwy. Student art exhibits from other MiamiDade high schools also will be hosted by
Turnberry Bank at other office locations in Coral Gables, South Miami and Aventura. “Gulliver schools and the Gulliver Art Department are pleased to share the exemplary artistic works of our young artists with Turnberry Bank,” said Gulliver Schools provost Gloria Bracciano. “It is our hope that this display not only highlights the talents of our students, but will brighten the days of the Turnberry staff and its customers.” “Exhibiting their artwork at the Pinecrest branch is a fantastic opportunity for Gulliver’s student artists,” said Laurie Deane, Gulliver’s Visual Arts Department chair. “The experience of displaying artwork in public makes it possible for our students to become more confident about their work and helps them view their work from a new perspective.”

Toby Rose ASK TOBY To accept an offer of admission is it necessary to send any type of fee? Absolutely. Unless you send the required fee you will not be accepted. If I decide not to attend a college, can I just not do anything or do I need to fill out the form to decline the offer of admission? Well you don’t have to do anything but I suggest that you complete the candidates reply form and return it in the enclosed envelope the university or college has given you. This is very important because withdrawing your application in this manner will enable the university to assist other candidates for admission. So think of the next guy and do the right thing. I really want a private dorm room for my freshmen year. My parents insist it must be a dorm with several students. What is your opinion? I agree with your parents. Kids, in my experience, who have had private rooms have difficultly socializing. I remember one of my students had the end room in the University of Pennsylvania and didn’t know one student on his floor and within three months he was calling me. Should he leave the university? And my answer was absolutely no. Get out there, join an organization and next semester get a double or triple if you have to and make friends. And he did, and now he is an attorney. But he learned an important lesson. We monitor our teenager’s use of the computer and the programs he gets into. He leaves for college in a few months. What happens then? Now you’ve asked the million dollar question because you are no longer going to be there to monitor him. He
can do exactly what he wants, when he wants to do it, and where he wants, and he will suffer the consequences. All I can say is let it go. Talk to him about it. Tell him he is now making his own decisions, and his decisions will affect the life he has in the future. Many kids love the freedom at first but then realize it’s getting them nowhere, and they will mature on their own, so let’s hope for that.
I realized I signed up to for too many AP classes in the fall. What do I do to change one of them into an easier course? You have to go to school, and depending on what high school you attend, there are different policies. Palmetto Senior High School, for example, has students wait until the fourth week of school, and during that fourth week you can change your schedule. The problem with this is that you’ve missed so much of the other class that it will be very difficult to catch up. You might try going to your school during the night school hours and see if there’s anyone there who can help you. Do you know if Brown has an engineering program? Yes, Brown offers Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Material and Mechanical Engineering. Engineering students do not need to pick a specific area until their Junior year. I made a big mistake in choosing early decision at one of my college choices. Another college has offered me a better scholarship. Can I break the early decision legal agreement? The answer is you may definitely not. It is binding. Toby Rose is president of Toby Rose’s College Prep. Free programs available to combat obesity Linda K. Landy ALPER JCC NEWS I’m betting that you will receive an unwanted holiday gift this year. It is not fruit cake, but it weighs about the same. It won’t be gift wrapped. It cannot be returned, and it is almost impossible to lose. Have you guessed yet? It is the Seasonal Seven, the seven pounds that the average American gains between late November and early January. It is even more challenging in my house because several family birthdays fall into the same time frame. Turkey and stuffing, Mexican wedding cookies, our traditional Hanukkah Yule log, potato latkes, candy, cookies, chocolate gelt, birthday cake, birthday celebration decadent desserts, birthday brownies, more birthday dinners, private birthday lunches with all my friends, ice cream and countless holiday parties. Sounds
more like Seasonal Seventeen. Seriously, with fattening goodies everywhere and schedules that interfere with regular workouts, holiday season weight gain is nothing new—but now it has an official name. And, this weight gain occurs in a nation that is already considered one of the fattest in the world. In fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has declared that obesity is the nation’s number one health problem, contributing to three of the top five killers of people today: heart disease, cancer and stroke. It is important to your health that you do your best to avoid the Seasonal Seven, but we all know how difficult that can be. The Dave and Mary Alper JCC wants to help. That is why they have created two programs to help you prevent those unwanted pounds. FREE TEEN OBESITY PREVENTION PROGRAM The first is a free program for overweight teens which teaches life-long physical and nutritional skills. Through a generous grant from The Children’s Trust Fund the JCC has created Fit for

Life, a 15-week teen obesity prevention program that is free and open to the community. Each week, the teens will participate in three hours of strength training and aerobic fitness with certified professionals and a one-hour workshop on nutrition, food preparation and healthy eating designed to modify existing behavior. The program is based on goal setting with personal accountability. Upon completion of the program the teens should see improvement in physical fitness, self esteem and nutritional knowledge. This is not a program for teens that are just looking to shed a few pounds. It is designed for truly overweight teens that are ready for a major life transformation. Before they are accepted into the program, teens will be interviewed to determine if they committed to changing their eating and exercise regimen. The program is directed by Evelyn Rosenblatt, author, national figure competitor, personal trainer, exercise physiologist and former Miami-Dade County high school science teacher. “While teaching at Coral Gables Senior High, I definitely saw the need for a class that taught kids the importance of exercise and nutrition for a healthy and long life,” said Rosenblatt. “So, I developed an exercise physiology science class.” The curriculum combined lectures and individually designed exercise programs. Her students lost as much as 60 pounds and all increased body muscle. “We studied the body’s anatomy and how it functioned, and then exercised to improve it,” said Rosenblatt. Her work was documented in conjunction with a University of Miami study and published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and Obesity Research. To enroll in the Fit for Life teen weight-loss program, call Rosenblatt at 305-498-7882.

FREE SPINNING AND YOGA The JCC also announces a holiday gift for members: the gift of fitness. All spinning and yoga classes will be free to members in December. There is no limit on the number of classes you may take, but your membership must be current. Members who have already purchased these classes will be able to use them in January. The J recognizes the importance of fitness for overall well-being. Even insurance companies are beginning to acknowledge the importance of keeping healthy and fit. That’s why an increasing number of companies are paying for gym memberships. Health and fitness director Meg McCarthy is encouraging members to get a jump start on their new year’s resolutions now. “Start a new workout program, try a new trainer, take a group fitness class. We all have something we like so we tend to stick to it, but is it working for you?” asks McCarthy. “Try one of our many group fitness classes and have fun with others while you burn calories. I love to take a class or work with a trainer because for that one hour I don’t have to think or plan, I just do and when it is over I feel better and I am finished with my workout.” McCarthy also recommends boxing. “Boxing is one of the most challenging and humbling experiences I have had. There are so many things to learn that you can’t see by just watching. Once you take a lesson you find yourself challenged and exhausted all at once. We have three trainers who can help you, if you are interested. Santiago, Danny and Casey all have experience with boxing and are all excellent trainers.” For JCC membership information, call Michelle at 305-271-9000, ext. 235.

The Junior Orange Bowl Sports Ability Games is a three-day series of athletic activities for physically-challenged young people and annually attracts more than 300 children and 200 high school, college and adult volunteers. The Sports Ability Games, going strong since its inception in 1981, welcomes children and teenagers from anywhere in the world, and any school — public or private — can participate. The large equation of participants and volunteers doesn’t take into account spectators, which might be friends and families of the participants, or just individuals who want to spend a few hours proving to themselves that amazing things do happen. The athletic events include a sailing regatta at Shake-A-Leg Miami, swimming at Miami Springs Aquatic Center and track-and-field events at Tropical Park Stadium. Each of the locations provides a venue for disabled children to compete in sporting events at their own developmental level, while meeting and interacting with other children who may share similar physical challenges. The essence of the Sports Ability Games is not winning so much as it is progress; young athletes who participate aren’t measured against other participants but, rather, encouraged to strive beyond their own personal boundaries. It seems that the children overwhelmingly exceed expectations and, according to Chairperson Richard Naue, there is “not a dry eye in the house” at times during the events. For many parents, the Sports Ability Games is the first time they have witnessed the feats their children can accomplish and this contributes to an exceptionally upbeat and positive environment surrounding the event. Event director James Daley knows all too well how emotionally uplifting these moments can be. A few years back,
Daley was approached by a woman who requested to speak to the individuals in charge of the Sports Ability Games. Expecting that she was going to report a concern, Daley was surprised when the woman broke down in tears a second later. The woman explained that she had just come by to thank everyone for putting on the event; moments earlier she had seen her son (who suffered from Cerebral Palsy) stand up out of his wheelchair for the first time while playing one of the games. It’s moments like this that have kept Daley and Naue returning to volunteer year after year. “The Sports Ability Games strive to provide the finest environment for athletic competition and developmental growth available to physically challenged youths 18 years of age and under,” Naue says. This year’s games will begin on Thursday, Dec. 4, with a sailing regatta at Shake-A-Leg with CBS4’s Jim Berry speaking to the participants and encouraging them on opening day. Friday, athletes will head over to Miami Springs Aquatic Center to swim, and the final day of the event, athletes take part in Track & Field games at Tropical Park. The events are designed to accommodate children with a wide range of disabilities including spinal lesions, blindness, cerebral palsy, les autres, amputation, dwarfism, and deafness. All children who participate are invited to an awards dinner to celebrate their hard work and determination. The Junior Orange Bowl Festival is made possible with the support of the City of Coral Gables, Miami Children’s Hospital, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the MiamiDade County Tourist Development Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor, and Board of County Commissioners. Volkswagen CC blends sports car with sedan Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Volkswagen has hit a home run with the all-new CC; it’s an outstanding automobile that should solidify VW’s new position as the world’s third largest automobile manufacturer behind GM and Toyota. The new CC — formerly the Passat — is a nice blend of sports car dynamics and the comfort of a sedan, sleekly designed in a very sophisticated package. We liked what we saw from the moment we set eyes on the car, even more so after taking it for a highway spin. Aesthetically, the CC is a beautiful car. It has a bold face with a large VW logo and a cross-strut chrome grille, rides on 17- or 18-inch multi-spoke wheels (there are four designs to choose from) and has a dramatic roofline that sweeps to the rear, with frameless doors and flowing lines. The mid-level beltline visually connects the front wheel wells to the taillights.
On the inside, there’s a sophisticated four-passenger interior, with four ergonomically formed sport seats positioned to sit low and offer strong lateral support. The split folding rear seats are separated by a center roll-top fold-down console. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter are standard, as are chrome finished dials and brushed aluminum trim on the Luxury and both VR6 models. As for power, there’s a choice of an inline four cylinder or a V-6. The Sport and Luxury models come with VW’s 2.0T turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with an intercooler and double overhead camshafts. The advanced four-valve per cylinder powerplant also is equipped with variable valve timing and a direct-injection fuel delivery system, both of which contribute to optimum fuel efficiency. Mated with either a six-speed manual (Sport only) or six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic, the 2.0T delivers 200 hp and 207 pounds-feet of torque. It clocks 0-60 mph in a respectable 6.9 seconds with the manual gearbox (21/31 mpg) and 7.4 seconds with the automatic (19/29 mpg). For even more power, the VR6 Sport
Volkswagen CC has a sleek design with a cross-strut chrome grille, frameless doors and a midlevel beltline that connects the front wheel wells to the taillights.
and VR6 4Motion models come with a 24valve 3.6-liter DOHC V-6 — a refined version of Volkswagen’s famous narrow-angle engine with cylinder banks that create a “V” angle of just 10.6 degrees resulting in a more compact powerplant. This engine also has variable valve timing, variable intake lengths and direct-injection technologies, and is mated to a six-speed automatic with Tiptronic and delivers 280 hp and 265 pounds-feet of torque. It clocks 0-
60 mph in 6.6-seconds and gets 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Base price on the Volkswagen CC with the 2.0T and a manual transmission is $26,790. Cabo San Lucas — sun and beauty in the Tropic of Cancer BY JOSE DELFINO The Tropic of Cancer is located at the northernmost latitude where the sun appears directly overhead at noon during the June solstice when the earth’s northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun to its maximum. Cabo San Lucas at the southernmost point of the Baja California peninsula in Mexico is just a few miles south. At the end of October, the temperature is still high (97 degrees Fahrenheit), but the air is very dry. The rainy season is gone, and the deserted hills and dunes are covered with a multitude of beautiful wild flora, like a temporary dressing of the permanent cactus forest that covers most of the land. The flight from Miami to Mexico City is about three hours, and then from Mexico City to the Aeropuerto Internacional El Cabo is another hour-and-15-minute flight. From the airport to Cabo San Lucas, it’s about a 30-minute trip in a shuttle van that takes tourists to their respective destination resort along the beautiful beaches of the peninsula. The charge for this service is $15 for each passenger. The big attraction of Cabo San Lucas is the ocean and the weather. There is a blue sky all the time, and a low humidity that leaves everything pristine and clear, just perfect for photography. At 7:15 a.m., the sun rises majestically, painting the ocean surf with a spectrum of color. We stayed at the Me Cabo Nikki Beach Meliá Resort, located right on the Médano Beach and very close to where all the action is, just six blocks from downtown Cabo San Lucas. It consists of a small town with many different types of tourist shops, handicrafts, bazaars, Mexican restaurants and a large established marina with a very impressive fleet of sport fishing yachts. The Me Cabo Nikki Beach Meliá Resort provides great service and has beautiful décor. The rooms are quite large, with wonderful views of the bay, the rocky arch and the mountains at the end of the peninsula. It is Cabo’s signature photograph. Médano Beach is one of the best beaches in the area. Others are not so friendly for swimmers because there are too many jagged rocks or swimming may not be allowed because of strong riptides. I suggest that you check with the hotel before booking your reservation. The history of Cabo San Lucas as a destination resort is relatively short. In the 1960s, the community consisted of only a fish cannery and a small town dominated by people who made their living from the sea. It wasn’t until the ’70s seventies that

The open bar overlooking the beach where you can enjoy a cold Margarita on the rocks with tortillas y salsa de guacamole.
Cabo San Lucas began to attract the attention of the tourism industry, when the area’s reputation as a place to go sport fishing for marlin began to draw wealthy anglers from around the world. Today, Cabo San Lucas is considered one of the top marlin fishing destinations in the world. During our stay, we witnessed a great three-day fishing tournament that saw prizes of more than $2 million awarded. Renting a car for a day is a good idea. There is a scenic all-day tourist circuit that you can drive from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz, the capital of South Baja California. You’ll travel along the west coast of the peninsula as you leave, then return on the eastern side with many interesting stops along the way, including the small town of Migriño about 45 minutes from Cabo San Lucas. Then Todos los Santos appears and you can stop at the Hotel California, the hotel that the Eagles made famous in song. Enjoying a cold “Margarita” on the rocks with some “tortillas y salsa de guacamole” is an absolute must! At the town of Los Barriles, you’ll find a rustic straw-roofed restaurant called El Barrilito that serves Huachinango frito, a deep-fried whole snapper. The food is great, the service is excellent and the prices are quite pleasing. A 24-hour compact car rental (we got a Nissan Tiida, known as the Versa in the U.S.) will cost you about $60 including insurance. The
(Photos by José Delfino)
La Roca del Pelícano (The Pelican Rock), where there are many varieties of parrot fish, angels, snappers and many more. highway is in very good condition and there are many signs to guide you in the right direction. If you like diving, there is very good snorkeling and scuba action in a place called “La Roca del Pelícano” (The Pelican Rock) not to far from the arch where there are many varieties of parrot fish, angels, snappers and hundreds more. For evening dining, we especially enjoyed La Oficina, a very nice restaurant located right on the seashore just a couple of blocks south of the Me Cabo Meliá Hotel. The tables and chairs are placed right on the sand and guests are beautifully surrounded by burning torches and local folk décor. A Mexican sommelier named Rambo visits the tables feeding shots of tequila to the customers. Later in the evening, there is a stage with great Mariachis and folkloric dances from ancient times to compliment the excellent cuisine and wonderful atmosphere. Tourism is the engine that drives Cabo
San Lucas. During our week-long stay, we saw the arrival of eight cruise liners – including ships from Carnival, Norwegian and Princess — make stops for a day or two. And while you may think this detracts from the beauty of the area, I think the ships really enhanced the view of the bay. Everywhere we went, the people were very friendly and the service was impeccable. This town really knows how to pamper the tourist. Cabo San Lucas is a great destination with a lot of fun. Check out the Internet for weekly packages that run from $1,700 to $2,000 per person (including air fare from Miami and hotel). Meals and drinks are not included, and can cost around $100 per day per person. Some resorts are all inclusive, with great savings on your stay.

For the second year in a row, the Master Velazquez Tae Kwon Do Institute of Miami has been crowned national champion. The school won its second straight title at the 2008 Disney Martial Arts Festival in Orlando by accumulating the most points in tournaments it participated in throughout the year. This while competing against much larger schools, some with over 1,200 students. Founded just four years ago, the Master Velazquez Tae Kwon Do Institute continues to gain a reputation as an elite martial arts institute. “Repeating as champs is a great accomplishment; in fact, it’s been several years since another school accomplished this feat,” said Philippe Velazquez, founder of the school. “This year’s tournament was even tougher, with more students competing than ever. I’m really proud of our kids.” The Disney Martial Arts Festival featured the annual Junior National Martial Arts Championships for Kick USA and 20 students from Master Velazquez won national championship titles, the most of any school in the competition. The Disney Martial Arts Festival is open to youngsters 5-17 years old and marks the end of the martial arts season. Over 2,000 participants from schools across Florida, the U.S. and the world competed this year. Participants competed in categories that included weapons, sparring, forms, extreme martial arts, Olympic TKD and Judo. One of the most anticipated events was the Tiger Claw Elite Championships, specifically for Black Belts. The best in the country in each division compete for the National Title. Six students from Master Velazquez competed — 13-year-old twin brothers Nikolas and Zachar y Bergollo, 14-year-old Marilyn Pinto , 10-year-old Giancarlo Pinto , 12-year-old Xander Mason and 8-year-old Christopher Mar rero. Zachary Bergollo won traditional weapons; Marilyn Pinto won sparring; and Giancarlo Pinto won for sparring. Master Velazquez students also won grand
