ONE OF MIAMI’S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

‘Garden Pop’ art show set for Nov. in Gardens BY LEE STEPHENS he Village Council has given approval to stage Garden Pop in November at Pinecrest Gardens. It is the first fine art exhibit for the property. Logistics chairman Steven Steele says Garden Pop will feature the works of world-renowned popular artists Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann and Donald Sultan, as well as four art galleries and many local artists. These include Romero Britto, Erika King, Eileen Seitz and Purvis Young. Twenty percent of all sales will go directly to the Community Gardens Charitable Fund and may be tax deductible. Steele adds that Village Mayor Cindy Lerner has agreed to serve as Garden Pop event chair and that several council members have signed on to work on the committee producing the event. Steele envisions Garden Pop as the first in a series of art events at Pinecrest Gardens and says that the old Parrot Jungle gift shop will become an art gallery for the Nov. 6-7 event. Future exhibits may feature art by disabled artists, art from Pinecrest schools, sculptures by Florida artists, vintage posters, surreal art, and South American and Caribbean art. Steele, an area art dealer for 20 years, says the possibilities are endless. Steele started in the art business collecting vintage French posters and progressed to buying and selling Andy

SHELBY HINDS Ransom Everglades senior Shelby Hinds loves to bake cakes. She has taken that love and turned it into a business and a way to give something back to the community, donating cakes to Lotus House, an Overtown homeless shelter. For the past few years, Hinds has baked, decorated and donated cookies and cakes to Lotus House on almost a weekly basis, as well as on special occasions. Those special occasions include most holidays, which she commemorates with imaginative cake decoration and design. One time she created a graffiti cake comprised of four 16-inch squares joined together and iced in pink fondant. The fondant was airbrushed to resemble a pond with gumpaste lotus flowers floating on top. The graffiti on the cake was also made in gumpaste painted in powder colors. The cake was donated to celebrate the Lotus House’s second anniversary. Hinds began her volunteer work at Lotus House because her mother knew the woman who started the shelter. “They asked me to start making cookies for birthdays, or if a baby was born they asked me to bake cookies,” she says. “Now I do huge cakes for their big celebrations and things like that.” Hinds usually spends about four hours a week making the cakes. Her cake-making community service also

includes a demonstration for mentally handicapped children and she plans to offer a cake-decorating course at the Lotus House. “So they (the women) can get a job at someplace like Publix,” Hinds says. She also has her own cake business and each month donates a percentage of her profits to the Lotus House. Hinds started baking cakes about three years ago when she began taking lessons at a cake shop by the Falls. As she became more advanced, her cakes became more daring and innovative. “Now I make wedding cakes, prom cakes, bar mitzvah cakes,” she says. “I really enjoy it.” Hinds usually begins baking a cake at least one day before a scheduled event or party. “I’ll have worked on the decorations before hand,” she says. “I make the flowers out of sugar a week early because they don’t go bad and I make the decorations a week or two before. I cover the cake with fondant the day before the event.” Hinds doesn’t do very much advertising to promote her business; just a small ad in the school newspaper. She also limits the number of baking jobs she takes on because she doesn’t want it to interfere with her schoolwork. Some weekends she won’t have any cake orders, but on others she might have two or three. And she will happily lend her baking talents for special events at school. “For prom, I baked the cake this year,” Hinds says. “That one I got paid for. A lot of times they will ask me to make it as a donation.” Hinds donated cakes include one that she made for the Ransom gala. She also makes cakes for teachers’ birthday parties. She recently made a wedding cake for a couple who held their nuptials at the Barnacle, an historic house in Coconut Grove. The cake served 300 people. ‘It was decorated with handmade sugar roses and tulips,” Hinds says. Hinds is set to start a busy senior year, which will include applying for college entry. She says she is not sure what school she wants to attend, but Duke is an option. She is also undecided on a major.

STEPHANIE SCHWARTZMAN Palmetto High School senior Stephanie Schwartzman has accumulated between 700-750 community service hours. Many of those hours have been earned through her participation in various dance projects. “I volunteered at various dance competitions around Miami,” Schwartzman says. “Dance is something I’ve been around since I was three or four years old.” This year, Schwartzman is the co-captain of the Palmetto dance team, Variations. It could be a very busy year at school for Schwartzman since she is the Variations co-captain, along with Catherine Klein. “I’ve been on the team since my sophomore year in high school,” Schwartzman says. Variations participates in many community dance productions, including performing in the school musical each spring. “We do a lot of school-related events,” she says. While many of the high school dance teams compete, Variations does not. The Variations’ sponsor works with the American Dance Alliance and her students volunteer at the dance competitions that the ADA stages. At the competitions, Schwartzman sold tee shirts and admission tickets,

handed out scorecards and helped tally the judges score sheets. Schwartzman also taught six to nine year olds how to dance at the Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center after-school program. “I love working with little kids,” she says. “Teaching them to dance and how to better themselves was an awesome experience. When you’re told what to do, you go and do it to the best of your ability; when you are the teacher, you have to think. You have to be in control and know what you are doing.” While much of her community service is dance related, she does have other interests. This past year she was a member of the 2009 Mitzvah Miami Committee, which was sponsored by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. The Teen Board decided this year to host a prom for senior citizens. “We had a lot of seniors attend, people in the 70s and 80s,” she says. “We wanted to give them a day of fun, let them learn about our generation and let us learn from their generation.” The teens and seniors talked about how the seniors grew up and how things were different from today’s society. “It was really nice for them,” Schwartzman says. “They really enjoyed it. We had food and music. We did a little king and queen celebration at the end.” Schwartzman also has worked as a leader-in-training at the Alper JCC for two summers. She dealt primarily with six and seven year olds. “It was actually a lot of fun,” she says. “I learned how to cooperate with people older than me. I learned a lot about myself and how to handle different situations.” At Palmetto High, Schwartzman is a member of the Donate Life Club and the Science National Honor Society. She is secretary of the National Honor Society. She plans to go on to college and major in business, marketing or advertising. She hopes to attend the University of Florida, though Indiana University is a possibility because of its excellent business school. Florida State University and the University of Colorado are also on her list of possibilities.

TAYLOR SCHWEBACH Taylor Schwebach is going to have a very busy senior year at Palmetto High School. She’s a cheerleader, president of the Red Cross Club, treasurer of the Integrity Network and will take many

difficult Advanced Placement classes. Schwebach has big plans for the Red Cross Club. The club has taught members about hurricane disaster relief and what to do if a tornado hits. The members perform community service projects as well. During the holiday season they adopted a needy South Florida family and gave them a Christmas to remember by providing a special dinner and presents. “For Halloween, we made candy bags for kids at Palmetto Elementary and we did a skit that taught them how to be safe for Halloween,” Schwebach says. One of Schwebach’s goals is to create more awareness of the Red Cross Club. When she became an officer last year (she had been secretary) the club was fairly new. To make it more interesting, the officers organized a scavenger hunt at school. “Each group had to figure out which safety area to go to next,” Schwebach says. “They had to learn how to use a fire extinguisher. They did different drills, like going to the safety shower in the science room, see how those are used, and learn about the safety blanket.”

Although it was a lot of work, Schwebach is planning even more meetings like that for the coming year. “Next year, I want to work more with actual disaster relief,” she says. “Once everyone is together, I want us all to go to an actual Red Cross site and I want to work more directly with the Red Cross.” Schwebach organized a used cell phone drive and the 50-60 phones collected were then given to the Red Cross. The organization received a dollar for each of the used phones. “I was sure kids would have plenty of used cell phones,” she says. While summer is a time for relaxing, Schwebach is also using the time to volunteer. This summer she has been working in different departments at South Miami Hospital one day a week helping with paperwork. “I think that I want, maybe, to work in a hospital,” she says. “What I really want to do is go into psychology. I’ve been taking courses at my school and my psychology teacher has really inspired me.” Schwebach has been inspired by her

teachers to do well enough to become a member of the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. She’s also a member of the Donate Life Club and Palmetto’s Integrity Network, which organized an Integrity Day last year. “All the kids from English classrooms went to the auditorium throughout the day and we put on a skit and showed how important it is not to cheat.” That day, the National Honor Society joined in and discussed how to ease the stress of being a high school student, noting that stress and cheating often go hand in hand. Schwebach is a gifted piano player and qualified for the Coral Reef High School music program. She also sings and was in the Beth Am High Holy Days choir even though she is not Jewish. Schwebach hopes to attend Florida State University. She is also applying to the University of Florida, the University of Miami and the University of Central Florida.

Warhol pieces and other pop art. He says the idea for Garden Pop came about after he became the largest Florida dealer of Warhol’s art. “At this point in my life, I was anxious to merge my passion for community service with my efforts to educate this generation about art,” said Steele. “It would give me goose bumps when people would come into my booth at a major art expo, look at works by Lautrec, Rockwell, Picasso, Warhol, Dine and others, and ask if I painted those pieces.” Aside from establishing Pinecrest as a fine art community, Steele says Garden Pop will improve and help maintain Pinecrest Gardens. He says Garden Pop will fund many improvements to the Village Gardens property, including a new lighting system, security system and blinds or shutters in the meeting room where the exhibit will be staged. Other improvements will follow that will open the Gardens to many different events, meetings and exhibitions in the future. “Much work has already been done on this event over the last several months, but it is critical that we have a

Why did you join the Friendship Circle? It started because I needed to do a mitzvah project for my Bar Mitzvah and Rabbi Yossi Harlig approached my Dad; and then it became much more than that. At first it was kind of a requirement, and then I got to know the kids, particularly Philip, and I became passionate about the Friendship Circle. It became something I wanted to do. How did it feel to win the Silver Knight Award, which is an incredible accomplishment? It was pretty amazing! It was a culmination of everything I have done, all the acting and the volunteering with Friendship Circle. All the years of hard work, studying and volunteering were combined in one reward, because the Silver Knight Award I received was an award that dealt with community service, but in the field of drama.

What do you plan to do in the future? I am going to UCLA to major in theatre and acting. I want to try to make it as an actor and try to make films that are not only enjoyable, but have meaning as well.

If you were talking to teenagers about joining the Friendship Circle, what would you tell them about why it’s so important to volunteer? I think it’s important because at the end of the day you get a lot more from the Friendship Circle then you give. And not only does the child with special needs gain a true friend and the parent gets respite in the home, but you also realize how much you can accomplish; and making one person feel better is really changing the world. Myra & Co. Spa celebrates 30 years of business BY LEE STEPHENS South Miami-based Myra & Company is marking 30 years in the salon and spa business with a carnival party on Sunday, July 26, and a month-long special offer to promote the Locks of Love charity. The carnival party will feature a tribute to the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s and guests of all ages will enjoy music, gift bags, carnival games and face art. Adult drinks will be sponsored by Bacardi. The party will be held on the grounds of Myra & Company, 7311 SW 59 Ct., from 2-6 p.m. Throughout July, Myra & Company will support Locks of Love, an organization that provides wigs for children suffering from cancer. Clients who donate 10 inches or more of unbleached, healthy hair will receive a free haircut if they mention Locks of Love when booking an appointment. Myra & Company president Myra Porter says being a part of South Miami’s business community for 30 years is a real achievement for a company that focuses on beauty. She credits her company’s success to

always being guided by the clients’ needs. “We work in a very tough industry and a lot of companies don’t last very long,” said Porter. “For example, we stay open on Sunday to cater to professionals and we are one of the first luxury salons to have stylists who work with exotic hair. Now we offer special packages so that clients can continue to come even during these tough economic times.” Myra & Company’s success is also the result of staying on top of the best in beauty trends. “We invest considerable time in research and training to keep all of our departments at the vanguard of beauty,” said vice president Erica Porter. Myra & Company opened in 1979 in a one-room house, initially focusing on hair styling and care. Today, the spa encompasses seven departments and offers an array of beauty services, from personal training on Power Plate machines to eyelash extensions, all in a beautiful complex that the original house many years ago. Fix healthcare, but not with socialized medicine Dear Editor: I have great empathy for the problem that Ron Beasley’s girlfriend is facing with her insurance problem. I am a cancer survivor (so far) and, thankfully, I had insurance that covered the problem. However, I must strongly disagree with the comment Mr. Beasley made that “socialized medicine is an option that must be seriously considered.” I come from Canada and if you want to see a broken, inefficient system, you should talk to the citizens up there. There is a lack of equipment and doctors, and the chances of dying of cancer under their government-run program are much higher than here. The same with England. Why would we trust our healthcare system to a government that cannot even run the Medicare system that is fraught with waste and fraud that they cannot even police? Healthcare must be fixed so that there is coverage for the uninsurables, but in no way should we dismantle the best healthcare system in the world. Costs must come down and be controlled, and what we have must be fixed. But never pass anything on to a socialist model where bureaucrats, not doctors, will be in charge of life and death decisions. Signed, David G. Dunbar

Like many otherwise rational people, even the mere mention of the word SNAKE prompts a spontaneous visceral response on my part. Translation: If I see one, I usually have extra tough laundry issues shortly thereafter. Fact is they flat out scare me. Don’t like’em. Never have, never will. Imagine my joy this week then to discover a three-footer that had wound his way onto my screened-in patio. Now if my mother was telling this story, she would have you believe that it was double it’s actual size, laid coiled up and hissing , threatening the very existence of my three terrified felines. In reality, it was a skinny garden snake that was wisely playing dead while my cats were batting it around, vying to show me which one of them had the biggest “kitty cojones.” I hear that a lot of us have been seeing more and more snakes what with all the rain we’ve had this spring and early summer. Experts tell me that it’s not the snakes themselves seeking higher ground, but they follow their prey to the dryness and, yes, that means patios, driveways and even your front door. (Note to the wise: Always wear combat boots to retrieve the Sunday paper from your front yard — at least until we hit the dry season). So, getting back to my own backyard drama, what to do with my newfound “friend”? There are some who wouldn’t blink an eye before giving him the old boom-boom-pow, but that’s not my style. Why should Mr. Slither meet an untimely death just for being what he is? Think, Kelly, think. Got it! My husband’s fishing net. Yup, that’s the ticket. I’ll run and retrieve it from the garage and throw it over the snake. Curses! I realize the net holes are much bigger than the snake is wide. Clearly, terror has supplanted all of my ability to rationally figure this out. Wait! I got it: A cookie sheet! I’ll slide the pan under the snake with the net over top of him, and fling him out the patio door, back into the flora and fauna where he belongs. Uh-oh. Hold it. While the cookie sheet is a brilliant idea, it doesn’t solve the net-hole problem. At this point, I look over at all three cats who are now elbowing each other, trying to suppress

Life With kelly belly laughs over the scene unfolding before them. That’s right, laugh, wise guys. We’ll see who’s chuckling when this nightmare is over and I run the can opener for no reason whatsoever. Wait! That’s it: The cats! What they do all day? Eat, sleep and foul their sandbox. I’ll use their litter box pooper-scooper to save the day. I’ll slide the cookie sheet under the snake, the net over top of him, and hold the whole apparatus in place with the scooper. And then, it happened. He looked straight at me with his beady red eyes and did that tongue thing. You know, when snakes poke their little heads up and the forked tongue comes out and wiggles? I could feel my lower intestines spontaneously tremble, but then I remembered what my esteemed Metrozoo buddy Ron Magill taught me: The snake is actually gathering information on that flickering tongue, touching the roof of his mouth and transmitting it to his brain via something called a Jacobson’s Organ. Right now, that information consists of the following: “Delta Vector Charlie… Delta Vector Charlie. At 12 o’clock, we have a terrified blonde woman trying to rescue my sorry asp with a cookie sheet, a fishing net and something that smells like a cat’s butt. Proceed with caution. Over.” Figuring his best bet would be to play out the dead scene once more, he held very still while I ran as fast as I could. One of my hands was under the cookie sheet, the other holding the cat-box scooper, and my dutiful son holding the door for me. I was sweating more than Jessica Simpson taking the S.A.T.’s. Out he went. Success! After my husband got home, my son regaled him with the story. After hubby’s peels of laughter subsided, I made him go back and find my cookie sheet, and the rest of my impromptu snake-retrieval kit that had crash landed beneath the ficus hedge. By the way friends, if my home-baked Pecan Sandies taste a little funny this Christmas, blame it on the rain.

REAL ESTATE

When one hears the word “foreclosure,” images are conjured of families unable to meet loan commitments and forced to consider unpleasant options. However, it’s not only homeowners that suffer from a foreclosure. Renters can be “out on the street” if their landlord defaults on mortgage payments. A report from the Mortgage Bankers Association states that nearly 20 percent of recent foreclosures have been against investors who did not live in the property, and even tenants in good standing face having to vacate the premises if they’re renting one of these properties. Why mention this gloom and doom scenario? Because home values have

declined and buyers are seeing the best deals in many years. While unpleasant for sellers, price declines increase affordability for buyers. So if you’ve been renting, now is a fantastic time to turn that monthly payment into equity. Interest rates have inched up, but still-historically-low rates combined with very affordable housing yield a formula that should put you in a home that you own for the same amount you are now paying for rent. Not to mention that at a lower purchase price, you’ll enjoy some great appreciation over the coming years. Just because you’re renting now, you’re not necessarily safe from suffering the consequences of a foreclosure. Take matters into your own hands and buy yourself some peace of mind.

Deering schoolyard science program hits road this fall July

BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ Ford Motor Company is focused on “Driving a Brighter Future in South Florida” and recently announced that it is teaming up with the Deering Estate’s EcoBrigade to help take their award-winning Eco-Academy on the road. Beginning in September, the Schoolyard Science Program presented by Ford Motor Co. arrives in schools throughout Miami-Dade and Monroe counties fully equipped with mobile ecosystems, lab equipment, fossils, artifacts and tools, preserved specimens, photographs, lesson plans and experiments to provide hands-on learning in ecology, archeology, geology, marine biology and environmental science. The Ford Motor Co. Fund continues the legacy of caring that Henry Ford started 105 years ago, with Operation Goodwill, an innovative initiative designed to increase Ford’s philanthropic and community-related commitment in select cities across America. “Through this program, the Ford Fund is partnering with its dealers in providing financial resources to support a combination of grants, safety and educational programs and volunteer activities that enhance the quality of life in the following cities: Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Nashville, Phoenix, San Antonio and San Diego,” said Don Conroy, regional manager of Ford Motor Company. Recently at a Go Green Buy American event at Miami City Hall, organized by City Commissioner Mark Sarnoff, representatives from the Ford Fund announced that the Deering Estate’s Schoolyard Science Program was selected as one of the national Operation Goodwill grant recipients. “We couldn’t be more excited,” said Mary Pettit, executive director of the

Deering Estate Foundation. “The Estate has served as a Living Classroom serving to enrich the education of thousands of students participating in our award-winning programs through field studies onsite each year. With the drastic funding cuts being made to education, both locally and at the state level, it is becoming more and more difficult for educators to bring the students to us. This program has been specifically designed to counteract these changes by mobilizing the curriculum so we can deliver it to them.” It is understood that early environmental education helps shape children’s values, perspectives and understanding on how to interact with and respect our precious natural resources. “Our partnership with Ford provides the Estate with the opportunity to outreach to Miami-Dade County public school students, to learn about the archeological and environmental sciences as they relate to our rich South Florida environment,” said William Irvine, director of the Deering Estate.| Members from the Deering’s staff are working closely with educators in the community developing curriculum that engages children through simple laboratory experiments and field studies that they can apply to real life situations. “Our ability to mobilize these programs with the help of Ford helps answer a growing need for support in our community as we strive to improve student performance on standardized tests such as the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) in the areas of math, science, reading and writing through “real world” application of lessons taught in the formal classroom,” said Pettit. Couples visiting the resort have the opportunity to play golf on the 18-hole championship course that is consistently voted “Best Public Golf Course in Southwest Florida.” You’ll also be able to enjoy a large beachfront swimming pool; an award-winning Tennis Center with six Har-Tru tennis courts; the world-class Spa, which offers an array of massage services, body treatments, skincare services, hydrotherapy, and salon services; the complete Fitness Center; and an Orchid House, which is home to over 3,000 tropical plants. Eliminate Stress and Anxiety Because you have a choice

Check with your doctor to make sure you do not have a serious medical condition. Try relaxation techniques. Ask a licensed clinical massage therapist for advice. Start an exercise regimen and stick to it on a regular basis. Seek advice from a professional gym or a personal trainer in your town. Diet right. Try to eat your meals at the same time each day. Consult a nutritionist if you’re not sure of the right diet for you. Get plenty of sleep (7 to 8 hours) every night, but avoid oversleeping. Plan your day by making lists of

things that need to be done in the order they need to be done. This can reduce stress and help you become more organized. Consider meditation. Research the topic to find an approach that works for you. See if incorporating natural foods and vitamins into your diet might be helpful. Seek advice from your area’s health food store. FIU, Baptist Health join in affiliation agreement BY LEE STEPHENS Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine has announced that it has signed an affiliation agreement with Baptist Health South Florida, the first FIU medical school partnership that will increase the number of medical residencies available in South Florida. “All of South Florida’s medical students will benefit from increased residency programs,” said Dr. John Rock, founding dean of the Wertheim College of Medicine. “And South Florida will benefit since research shows that 70 percent of doctors remain in the communities where they do their residencies.” As part of the formal academic affiliation, Baptist Health and FIU will develop an accredited family practice residency program at West Kendall Baptist Hospital, which currently is under construction. The Wertheim College of Medicine’s mission to improve healthcare in South Florida includes developing residency programs in the area. Baptist also will work with FIU to provide its medical students with opportunities for clinical rotations at Baptist Health. “We have enjoyed a longstanding relationship with Baptist and are pleased to cement it through this agreement,” Dr. Rock said “Baptist is a leader in healthcare and their long tradition of healing in our community will enhance our mission of educating socially aware and responsive physicians who will practice medicine in a compassionate and com-

prehensive manner.” Baptist Health South Florida, the largest faith-based, not-for-profit healthcare organization in the region, has a network of services that extends throughout Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Its facilities include Baptist, Baptist Children’s, South Miami, Homestead, Mariners and Doctors hospitals, and Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute. The Wertheim College of Medicine faculty includes 45 members of the Baptist medical staff including Dr. John Uribe, who is chair of Orthopedics at FIU, and Dr. Manuel Peñalver, who serves as chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “The affiliation is a win-win-win,” said Brian E. Keeley, president and CEO for Baptist Health. “It benefits the College of Medicine, of course, by the fact that we lend our expertise to the medical students’ education. It benefits Baptist Health, in that it will undoubtedly result in our ability to recruit well-educated primary care physicians to our hospital staffs. And it certainly benefits the community at large, because there is such a tremendous need for more primary care physicians.” In August, the Wertheim College of Medicine will welcome its inaugural class of 43 students, chosen from more than 3,000 applicants. FIU’s other clinical partners include Jackson Health Systems, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Children’s Hospital, Mercy Hospital and Leon Medical Centers.

How to lower healthcare costs for businesses

BY MIKE DUNN

According to one reputable consulting firm that specializes in employee benefits, the premiums which small businesses (less than 200 employees) have for heath insurance coverage is increasing at twice the rate that it’s increasing for large (500-plus employees) businesses. In light of that, an estimated 40 percent of small-business owners do without insurance because they simply can’t afford it. In addition, many who are self-employed have health coverage that is not adequate because the cost of better coverage is often prohibitive. They literally are putting their livelihood in jeopardy because of their lack of coverage. But when it comes to health care coverage, what can a small business owner or someone who is self-employed do? Fortunately, small businesses and those who are self-employed don’t have to stand alone. There is strength in numbers. There are also some creative alternatives to health care out there for those who take the time to investigate. Here are some helpful suggestions for small business owners: 1. Become Better Educated About the Issue The better educated you are about health care, the more you can avoid unnecessary

and/or expensive medical insurance. The Internet can be your ally, a real wealth of knowledge. Time invested in online research is usually well-rewarded because the more informed you are as a small business owner, the better your chances of lowering your health care costs. You can shop for the lowest health insurance rates, review options that are available to your business, or ask medical questions of experts. 2. Join Forces with Other Small Business Owners The more people you represent, the more clout you have with insurance companies. One small business standing alone may not get much of a discount. Several small businesses standing together, however, can make an impact. Some small businesses are banding together to form Association Health Plans (A.H.P.) to get better rates from insurance companies. To find out if there’s an AHP in your state, check with The Association Healthcare Coalition. 3. Join A Discount Health Benefits Program These programs offer their members significant savings on medical and dental visits, prescription drugs, and other health services by connecting members with doctors, dentists, vision centers, and chiropractors who are on the plan. It’s sometimes frustrating for employees to have to see a doctor or

dentist who is part of the benefits program, but it sure beats the alternative. 4. Explore Group Rates If the rising cost of health care makes it harder and harder for you to make your premium payments, look into insurance plans that offer group rates. While your employees may have to settle for higher deductibles and less comprehensive coverage, they will surely be more satisfied with some coverage than with none. Sometimes the small business owner simply has to lay it on the line and explain to employees what the facts of life are regarding health care coverage. Employees may not be aware of the heavy expense to their employer and an honest explanation from the top can do a lot to curtail complaining and to keep everyone united as a team. Here are some helpful suggestions for those who are self-employed: 1. Join a Discount Health Benefits Program Many self-employed professionals have been forced to eliminate coverage in areas like dental, vision and prescription drugs. But these benefits are included when one enrolls in a discount health benefits program. In these programs, any gaps in the self-employed coverage (typically dental, vision and increasingly prescription drug) are eliminated.

2. Join With Other Self-Employed People There are strength in numbers so investigate joining a professional or trade organization that offers its members coverage at a group rate discount. Two such groups are The National Federation of Independent Business (www.nfib.com) and the National Association for the Self-Employed (www.nase.org) are. Before joining a group just for its health insurance plan, though, one should consider the cost of membership in addition to the insurance premiums. 3. Lower Your Level Of Health Insurance Coverage If you are healthy and don’t require much medical care, why give the money to the insurance company for low-cost claims when you could keep it yourself? If you choose a higher deductible or a higher co-pay, the money you save in monthly premiums might actually be more than you spend out of your pocket in a year. It is prudent to keep informed about changes in the small-business benefits arena. Organizations such as Working Today and the National Association for the SelfEmployed are building networks and lobbying Congress to improve access to better health and retirement plans for independent professionals. ACUPUNCTURE The Point of Well-Being

Page 25

What is Acupuncture? Acupuncture is traditional Chinese medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years and is still a primary form of healthcare today. How can it help me? When certain imbalances occur, as they do with all of us, then there are symptoms that can be as simple as feeling tired or as complex as chronic conditions. Acupuncturists use a variety of methods to restore balance within the body. Can I have an Acupuncture treatment and take medication? Absolutely, acupuncture does not interfere with medications and can often help reduce the side effects that some medications cause. Is Acupuncture safe? For your comfort and relaxation, our acupuncturist only uses FDA approved, sterile acupuncture needles that are used only once, thin as a human hair and virtually painless when inserted into the skin. Is one enough? To treat a condition and maintain a healthy body, we normally recommend a course of treatments based upon an individual’s symptoms. Is the Elemis Acupuncturist qualified? Our acupuncturists are certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) and are licensed by the State of Florida.

The Way To A Man’s Heart Is Through His Stomach and The Way To Residents’ Hearts Is Through Great Dining Experiences BY HELEN SHAHAM Q. My husband and I are both in our 80’s. We’re considering a move to a senior living community and find that dining is included as part of the monthly fee. Since we’ll do most of our dining at the community we are worried that we’ll get bored with the food. How can we be sure they know how to create enjoyable experiences day after day? A. The dining experience is a common concern for many older adults moving to a senior living community. It may seem a bit hard to imagine eating most of your meals in the same place for an extended period time but rest assured innovative retirement communities don’t just make meals; they make the entire dining experience incredible. Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner, dining can often be the highlight of the day. It’s the time residents gather to socialize and exchange stories with friends and neighbors. And, nothing goes with great conversation like a great dining. At The Palace, the first step in creating memorable dining experiences for residents is the selection of chefs with extensive culinary backgrounds. Alon Hershkowitz, the executive chef for The Palace Renaissance and Royale Assisted Living Communities, offers a wealth of knowledge and talent, having worked at several of the most luxurious hotels and country clubs including The National Hotel in Miami Beach. Under his culinary guidance, our Assisted and Catered Living residents enjoy fine dining which rivals some of the best gourmet restaurants. He marries their desire for comfort foods such as traditional meat loaf and brisket with his flair for creating French, Italian, Jewish and Mediterranean specialties. As people age, they experience a natural decline in their senses of taste and smell. Chef Alon compensates by increasing the intensity of the dish’s flavor and aroma with fresh, roasted garlic and special sauces and purees. “Dining has to be both enjoyable and healthy,” said Chef Alon. “We understand the need for limited to almost NO sodium and sugar intake and use only no-salt seasonings. We also offer a wide variety of sugar-free desserts.” Chef Alon, just like Gabriel Garrido, the Food Service Director of our Independent Living Community, The Palace Suites, believes there’s always a reason for a celebration and has created theme dinners throughout every month to heighten residents dining experiences. “Palace residents are well traveled and have very high expectations,” said Carrido, who has been with the company for over 10 years. “Employees get their greatest satisfaction from seeing residents happy; therefore, we go above and beyond to exceed these expectations while shattering the stereotypes of dining at a senior living community.” The Renaissance & Royale residents enjoy specialty dinners twice a month. Past themes have included German, Asian and Mediterranean. Suites’ residents enjoy gourmet dinners on Thursday nights with menu items including scallops and filet mignon. Also, the Suites’ Happy Hour is kicked up a notch regularly. Each features an international theme and dishes from the region are created along with the entertainment. Recent

Ask Helen

themed Happy Hours have included a Spanish Tapas event featuring over 20 different appetizers along with Flamenco Dancers and an Italian Antipasto Party with over 15 delicious offerings including Proscuitto di Parma and fresh tomatoes & buffalo mozzarella. Holidays and special occasions are yet another way The Palace communities make the dining experience special. The Palace Suites recently set a record when it hosted the largest Mother’s Day brunch buffet for over 140 residents and their families. The Palace also hosts a myriad of unique brunches throughout the year including a Sunday Gospel Brunch, a Country Western Brunch, an Oktoberfest Brunch, Father’s Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day and Hanukkah buffets, and more. Residents also have opportunities to voice their opinions about the dining experience at The Palace. In addition to talking with the Chef as he visits their table every dinner to solicit feedback, they can share their thoughts during the monthly Resident Council meeting or write their comments in The Palace’s bi-annual Resident Satisfaction Surveys. Our chefs and dining room mangers take other steps to further maximize resident dining satisfaction. White linen tablecloths adorn each table and are accented by fresh flowers. Residents also enjoy a glass of wine and freshly baked bread (baked in-house) with dinner, and the young wait staff is educated daily about the menu, the daily specials and their ingredients and how they should be served. “It’s not simply about food on a plate,” said Chef Alon. “It’s about service. The dining experience begins even before the server arrives at the table; personal service is paramount. Here, the dining staff knows residents by name and remember their preferences.” Chef Alon has launched an engaging, interactive cooking show too. Twice a month, he prepares dishes such as stir fry vegetables, soups and meatballs, taking residents through the food preparation process and cooking stages. Donned in aprons and hats, residents cook along and eagerly look forward to eat the finished products. To help ease your fears, schedule a reservation for dinner at the community. Most communities will not hesitate to allow you to dine with residents. It’ll also be beneficial because you and your wife will be able to meet your potential neighbors in a social environment. If the chef at the new retirement community thinks as ours do—that the way to residents’ hearts is through great dining experiences—you’ll soon find yourself inviting your friends and family over to enjoy the wonderful experiences. If you have questions about the lifestyle changes that go with aging, or if you’d like to be invited to a social event at The Palace Suites, please send a note to Helen Shaham, The Palace Suites, 11377 S.W. 84th St., Miami, Florida 33173, call her at 305-271-2020, or email helen@thepalace.org.

Helen Shaham and her husband Jacob have been operating Senior Living Communities for the past 30 years. The Palace Suites in Kendall is a luxury Independent Living Community for active seniors. In addition, The Palace at Kendall campus is home to two Assisted Living Residences and a Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. They also operate The Palace Gardens Assisted Living Community in Homestead, Homestead Manor Nursing Home and The Palace @ Home, a Medicare Certified Home Health Agency. Their two newest projects are The Palace at Weston – Luxury Living for Those 55 and Over, and The Palace Tel-Aviv, a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Israel. They have two communities under development – The Palace at Weston Senior Living and The Palace at Coral Gables, Independent & Assisted Living. TNR is so easy even dog people can do it!

BY CAROL CARIDAD President, Paws4You Rescue

Most people think of their own experience in catching their pet cat — chasing them around the house and finally extracting them from beneath the bed for that trip to the vet — and shutter at the thought of trying to catch a wild animal. But, contrary to popular belief, trapping stray and feral (untamed) cats is a walk in the park. “It’s estimated there are over 400,000 free roaming cats in Miami-Dade alone,” says Sylvia Mora, president of The Cat Network, Inc. “And many of those cats are contributing the tragic overpopulation problem in our county.” Just around every corner we see their faces, hiding in bushes, scavenging dumpsters, and frequently they are hit by cars. Many people (possibly even yourself) think they are making a positive difference by simply feeding these free roaming cats, but keeping their tummies full does not prevent the vicious cycle of overpopulation from occurring. Mora says she speaks to many people who are frustrated because of the amount of money they are spending to feed a growing population of stray cats in their neighborhoods. “We get calls everyday from people who say they went from feeding one cat to feeding 15 in just a few months,” Mora says. “But when I ask if they attempted to sterilize the first cat, the answer is usually no. The reality is that it is cheaper to pay to have one cat fixed than to pay to feed a growing population of cats over their lifetime.” Obviously if you tried to catch a feral cat the wrong way, it would not hesitate to bite and scratch based on its pure instinct for survival. But what people don’t know is how incredibly easy and safe it is to catch a feral cat if you use the right tool – a cat trap! Combine a hungry wild animal with infamous feline curiosity and you’ve got yourself an easily-tricked kitty who will walk straight into your trap. In order to trap a cat the right way, you will need: • A humane wildlife trap (cat trap). You can rent a trap from Miami Dade Animal Services or The Cat Network, who both charge a refundable deposit, or invest in your own humane cat trap. • A large towel or blanket.

Paws4You • Bait (cooked chicken, fish or turkey). Ok, so you’ve got the stuff. Now what? Follow these nine steps: • Get to know the routine of the cat you are looking to trap. Many feral cats hunt at night, so the best time to trap is after sundown. Plus, there’s less traffic and noise. • Bait and set your trap on the ground (flat surface) in an area where the cat is likely to find it, but away from things that may endanger or frighten the cat. • Wait. • Check your trap before bedtime. • If you’ve trapped your cat, immediately throw the towel or blanket over the trap. This dramatically calms the cat, who may start thrashing and hissing as you approach. • Keep your cat covered inside the trap and place the trap and cat in a safe area until you are able to take the cat to be sterilized. • Don’t worry about the veterinarians and their technicians, they know how to handle feral cats. • After getting your cat back from the vet, keep the cat inside the trap for another 24 hours so it can recovery fully from the anesthesia. • The next evening, release your cat in the same location that you trapped it. This is import to the cat’s survival. And there’s even better news than how incredibly easy it is to participate in TNR (trap, neuter, release). Just last month Miami Dade Animal Services began offering free spay and neuter services for cats every Thursday. Check in begins at 8 a.m. on a first come first served basis. Now there’s just no excuse. “Trapping using a humane trap is safe, easy and the most effective way to sterilize stray and feral cats you can’t handle. Sterilization prevents the vicious cycle of unwanted cats being born that will continue if a cat is left unsterilized,” says Sylvia. So, my new philosophy about TNR is this: It’s so easy, even dog people can do it!

“But, mom, why not?” “Because those concerts are filled with nothing but drugs, debauchery and loud noise!” That is usually how the conversation goes between a teen and a parent when the teen asks permission to go to a concert. The conversation usually starts with your child waiting for the right moment to give what you can tell is a very delicately worded speech. The conversation ends with, “You suck as a parent!” Followed by a door slamming. However, this could all be avoided with a simple, “Yes, you can go.” You may be thinking one of the following: “Who are you to give me parenting advice?” or “Do you know what goes on at those concerts?” You may even be thinking a mix of both. Nevertheless, I have an answer for both. Who am I to be giving you parenting advice? I never said I was giving you parenting advice. I am merely trying to help you avoid a conversation that I am sure will occur, and give you a heads up on how to deal with it. Also, I do know what goes on at those concerts, seeing as I go to them more frequently than I visit my dentist. I understand that you were a teenager at some point, too. I also understand that when you went to concerts in the ’70s or ’80s you saw some things that you think your children will participate in if they go to one of their concerts. Well, chances are you’re wrong. Not to say some of that stuff doesn’t still exist at concerts, of course it does. However, that doesn’t mean your kid is going to do any of it. You should have enough faith in your kid, that you have raised them right and they know better. This is the opportunity for your children to prove to you how responsible they are, and they are truly only interested in going for the music. I know from personal experience that these are opportunities to show my mother that I am responsible young adult. That I know how to behave, how to be aware of my surroundings and how to take the higher road when there are rude people at these events. However, if you still feel uncomfort-

TEEN TALK able with your child attending alone, have another parent go with the child and friends. This is how my mother has agreed to let me go to concerts. It will be a group of six of us and a responsible adult. Not only are your child and your child’s friends closely looking out for one another, but there is also an adult who knows if things look too dicey. That being said, I’ve never been to a concert that looked unsafe. Besides, concerts today aren’t just about the loud noise. Just about all the concerts I attend have a charity backing them. Some of the charities I have seen at concerts include things like Invisible Children. Invisible Children is an organization that helps the poor innocent children who get recruited as soldiers in Darfur. All you do is sign up for an email list or buy a bracelet. The money will go to help promote awareness of a very big problem. Another very popular organization that I see at every concert is To Write Love On Her Arms. This nonprofit organization sells tee shirts at a stand and the money then goes to help prevent suicide, depression, addiction and self-injury. I’ve even been to concerts that have held blood drives. So, yeah, I do know what goes on at concerts. Now you do, too. Not only does your child want to be with friends and rejoice in music, they also want to be involved with a cause. Now the next time your teens ask you if they can go to a concert, don’t immediately say, “Absolutely not.” Let your child present all the facts and, if you must, make a compromise. Say yes under the condition that another parent you trust attends. Or attend yourself. You might end up taking out those earplugs and enjoying the music. Not only are you building a stronger foundation with your children by listening to some fabulous music and showing them that you trust their judgment, you might also help a great cause.

Audi A6 upgraded with fuel-efficient engines Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Just about everybody says the Audi A6 sedan is a great car to drive. It’s also comfortable and pleasing to the eye. After a week behind the wheel of the A6, we can only add our vote to the growing list of believers. For 2009, Audi has upgraded and revamped the A6, adding more efficient engines that cut fuel consumption by about 15 percent and improving the suspension by installing a new high-tech assistance system that gives the driver even greater control. The A6 has been a standout for Audi in the luxury sport sedan segment and the new model comes with several new styling accents, including a single-frame grille, bumpers, air vents and fog lights. The available daytime running lights have been redesigned as horizontal strips, each with six xenon LEDs. Other options

include Audi adaptive headlights, a cornering light system, and the high-beam assistant that automatically switches between the high and low beams. An aluminum-colored molding along the sides emphasizes the A6’s contour, while the lip on the trunk, integrated chrome strip on the bumper, broad diffuser and straight exhaust pipes are part of the revamped rear end. The interior of the A6 is spacious and elegant, and there is a lot of attention to detail. The armrests, for example, are soft and plush for extra comfort and the integrated headrest system reduces the danger of whiplash. Additionally, the seats can be upholstered with a new material and sport seats are available in Valcona leather. The instrument panel has highresolution graphics and a new frame to better accent the display. Chrome trim throughout, even on the steering wheel spokes, keys the overall luxury and inlays are available in either faux aluminum or luxury wood. The rear seats are also plush and the L-shaped headrests improve the driver’s rear view visibility. Audi offers a broad range of engine choices for the A6 — six gas and four

diesels that use direct fuel injection, and cutting-edge FSI, TFSI and TDI technologies in a choice of four, six or eight cylinders, with stick shift, Tiptronic or highefficiency Multitronic transmission technologies available. At the same time, engineers have added new measures that cut fuel consumption for all A6 engines by about 15 percent. The smallest A6 gas engine is the 170hp 2.0 TFSI turbocharged four-cylinder and the most powerful is the 350-hp 4.2 liter FSI V-8 engine. In the middle are two FSI V-6 engines — the 2.8 liter 190 hp version or the 3.0-liter 220 hp copy. Both fea-

ture the innovative Audi Valvelift System (AVS), which manages the inlet valve timing so that there is more torque and less fuel consumption. The 3.0 TFSI comes with Tiptronic and Quattro, and clocks 060 in 5.9 seconds. Pricing on the Audi A6 ranges from $45,100 to $60,950, depending on engine, transmission and drive system. Libra - You have money coming in and going out at nearly the same pace. You may be frustrated, but there are ups as well as downs this week so don't get too wrapped up in any unexpected setbacks. There is some lucky energy in the "investment and debt-load" sector of your chart.

Taurus - You and your partner are going to have to talk. Yes, one of "those" talks. The kind that you cringe from. It won't be the nightmare you make it out to be - unless you try to avoid it. You can be your own worst enemy this week, so be a listener rather than a talker. Don't let yourself get defensive.

Scorpio - You will find that the true source of your identity as a person comes from family and loved ones. It is not too late to spend some more time and energy with your family - they are overdue for some quality time with you. A long-distance telephone call could bring good news.
