TotalBank opens new Village banking center

otalBank officially opened its much anticipated full service branch facility in Pinecrest last week, barely four months after breaking ground late last year. Chartered in 1974 and today holding $2.2 billion in assets, TotalBank hosted a gala grand opening party in the modern new banking center, 10205 S. Dixie Hwy., on May 2 attended by Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner and Village council members Jeff Cutler, Bob Ross and Joe Corradino. TotalBank President Luis de la Aguilera headed the corporate contingent attending the festivities and he told the crowd that while the building was new, the bank has been active in the area for a long time. “We have been very active in the Pinecrest community for many years without having a physical presence,” said de la Aguilera. “We made the commitment to build in Pinecrest well over a year ago and opened a three-man loan production office here. The Pinecrest demographics are very strong and we

BRITTANY ROTH Brittany Roth is a self-proclaimed “math and science nerd, and proud of it.” The Coral Reef Senior High junior plans to pursue a career in the medical field, specifically in the biomedical or pharmaceutical field. Studying in Coral Reef’s rigorous International Baccalaureate Magnet Program is just one of the many steps she is taking to achieve her goals. Roth plans to attend a three-week premed program at Washington University in St. Louis this summer. She was not only accepted into the highly selective program, but also received a partial scholarship to attend. Washington University is one of the universities Roth is considering. Others on her list include Duke, Tulane, University of Pennsylvania and Vanderbilt, where her brother currently attends. Roth was recently awarded a Best Buy scholarship to apply toward her college education. She also was recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program for achieving exceptional scores on the PSAT and named a QuestBridge Scholar and Fein Fellow for 2012. “College is very important to me, so I’m taking all of the right steps to ensure my success,” she said. Roth also will spend her summer vacation interning at Innovia, a Miami biomedical engineering company. A previous internship at the University of Miami microbiology lab is one of many experiences that influenced her decision to pursue

a career in the medical field. “I have first-hand experience watching my grandfather battle cancer,” said Roth, who has participated in two Relay for Life events in honor of family members. “It has inspired me to help others ease the pain of a debilitating disease or the affects of aging.” Roth is inspired to speak out against discrimination and bullying and has found two creative ways to promote this message. As a member of Impact Theater over the past three years, she’s helped the group produce an annual show with an anti-discrimination message. This year, she serves as stage manager. As a member of the Non-Violence Project, she helps children and teens cope with bullying. “It’s very important to accept people for who they are,” Roth said. “High school can be tough on kids. We need to encourage and support each other and promote self-confidence.” Roth’s community service efforts focus on giving back to children in need. She has been involved with Neat Stuff, Inc., since she was seven years old. The local nonprofit, founded by her grandmother, provides abused, neglected and abandoned children with clothing, backpacks, schools supplies and more. Her favorite Neat Stuff event occurs at Halloween. “Without Neat Stuff, many children would not have a Halloween costume,” Roth said. “The children come into the Neat Stuff store to choose a costume and it’s so rewarding to see the joy on their faces as they become a princess or superhero.” As a coach for the after-school sports program Dade County Sports, Roth teaches basketball to elementary school children three times each week during three seasons. She instructs children on sports skills, teamwork and sportsmanship, while also serving as a positive role model. Roth has been a member of the Coral Reef varsity bowling team for two years and has played varsity badminton for three years, serving as a team captain this year. As the secretary of Mu Alpha Theta and a member of National Honor Society, she volunteers as a tutor and participates in the groups’ various community service projects. Roth is also an active member of the Key Club and the Jewish Student Union, where she enjoys sharing her heritage and cultural foods with fellow members. By Nancy Eagleton

GILLIAN BAYER Palmetto High junior Gillian Bayer spent a couple of summers working at summer camps. One summer she worked at Temple Judea with her best friend. “We were counselors in training so we would work along with the counselors to get the kids quiet or changed after swimming,” she says. “We’d help them in line and we’d also play with them. If there was a kid that was lonely, we’d go over and talk to them to make sure he’d have a good time.” Bayer says she really enjoyed working with the three and four year olds. “I really like little kids,” she says. She switched over to work at the MiniCanes camp because her brother and sister were attending. Working the camps taught her a little about herself. “I learned that I’m very patient,” Bayer says. “These were little children so they don’t have the maturity to make a decision the way I would.” At Palmetto, she continues in a teaching role by taking leadership in the group Eight Habits of the Heart, which involves having students go into ninth grade classrooms to teach the core values cherished at Palmetto. The Eight Habits of the Heart is based on the book of the same name written by Clifton Taulbert. “We teach eight habits along with the core values of our school,” she says. She meets regularly with the coordinator to determine when each of the values should be taught.

“We do it on early release days,” Bayer says. “It’s usually every other month. We usually meet with the other mentors the week before and give them the handouts that we give the kids and talk about it so when they go into the class they know what they’ll say.” Bayer is the secretary of planning for the student cabinet and she’s likely to apply for a treasurer position in either the senior class or on student council. Outside of school, Bayer is the treasurer of the regional board of BBYO. That position puts her in charge of fundraising. “The regional board usually works as one big unit; I’m in charge of planning fundraising for our region,” she says. “I work with the boys’ equivalent of treasurer.” BBYO is a Jewish organization that spans the U.S. and 23 countries around the world. “Also under that position, we’re in charge of globalization. I help educate the region about other global communities,” Bayer says. Her involvement in the organization led to her being named a global ambassador to Curacao. She was chosen by the International board for the position based on her application. “I got paired with a kid from Orlando,” she says. “We’re trying to make contact with teens and staff in Curacao. So we can establish not necessarily a BBYO but a strong Jewish community.” Late in her junior year, she’s already considering colleges, although it’s too early to apply “I really like George Washington,” Bayer says. “I joined a program through BBYO and we stayed in their dorms. I want to study business and international affairs, so it’s a good place to be.” She already has a list of potential schools and will begin college visits soon. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

ANDRES FLORES This school year, Andres (Andy) Flores is the secretary of the Palmetto High School junior class. Being one of the class officers, he works on the programs that

make high school fun and memorable, such as the Junior Ring Ceremony and Party Like a Panther, the celebration held to celebrate becoming an A school once again. Because Flores is also in the TV Production class, he made a public service announcement about the Party Like a Panther event. “I put together a commercial that aired on the morning announcements,” he says. “The goal was to get as many kids in school as possible. We attempted to break a world record for the most people attempting the Cha Cha Slide at the same time.” Flores says he had good feedback on the PSA, good enough that it convinced a number of students to go to school on an early release day. On the TV Production team, Flores writes, films and edits PSAs. He’s also the production class treasurer. “My job is to collect money for any fundraiser,” he says. “At the beginning of the year we have Mr. Panther.” For that fundraiser he collected ticket money and sold tee shirts. This year’s shirt had a Superman type of logo, with P for panther and on the back listing the names

of all the contestants and all the clubs they represented. “Mr. Panther is one of the biggest shows put on by TV Production,” Flores says. “Mr. Panther allows any male student from any grade level to participate.” Contestants represent a club and compete in beach attire and then the top 10 participate in a talent competition. The top five are asked questions about the school such as what is the core value of the school. The event is popular, selling out every year. “That money is put into the class,” Flores says. “At the end of this year, we will go to Student Television Network.” This year the event was held in Dallas. During the conference students competed against other schools in different events. “The class is split up into groups and you’re put into different categories,” Flores says. “If your group is movie trailers, they would give you a movie and you have to make a movie trailer.” While he’s fascinated by the technology of television production, Flores also loves writing scripts for the broadcasts. “The morning broadcast is one of my favorite things to do is because I like to

write,” he says. His love of writing led him to volunteer at a children’s writers’ conference in January where he manned the registration desk. Flores’ fascination with technology is one reason he is considering an engineering major in college, although he’s also interested in a biomedical career. His psychology class has sparked interest in the workings of the brain. Colleges on his list include the University of Chicago, University of Illinois, Georgia Tech and the University of Florida. But we are one that has the financial power behind it to do whatever the community needs. We are very excited to be here!” TotalBank was acquired in 2007 by Banco Popular, the third largest commercial bank in Spain with about $200 billion in assets. ball, water play, rock climbing, arts and crafts, Wii and computer lab. Every Wednesday, campers will take field trips to local attractions such as a Miami Marlins baseball game, Zoo Miami, Miami Seaquarium, Venetian Pool, bowling and movies. Although the camp is new, director Dan Sheehy is not new to youth sports. For more than 15 years he’s been a leader in local youth sports programs. Born and raised in Miami, Sheehy has served as an officer for the Kendall Boys and Girls Club, a football coach for Westminster Christian High School, commissioner for Suniland Optimists flag and tackle football, cheerleading and basketball programs, and chief umpire for the Howard Palmetto Baseball/Softball Association. He played baseball and football at Columbus High School and football for the Kendall Broncos. “Youth sports have become so competitive, beginning at a very young age,” said Sheehy. “This camp will enable kids to receive additional training in their sport – or learn a new sport – under the direction of a skilled coach. There’s really no other camp like this.” Sheehy has recruited top coaches to coach campers during daily sports clinics, offered 9 a.m. to noon. One of America’s most successful high school football coaches, Chris Merritt, head football coach at Columbus High, will coach the football clinics. Bill Shopp, who played for the St.

Louis Cardinals organization from 1976 to 1979, will coach the baseball clinics. “It’s important for kids to learn the fundamentals and the proper techniques of their sport,” said Sheehy. “They will learn from coaches and athletes who know the game. They will gain confidence, be more successful and ultimately have more fun.” Running Pinecrest Sports Camps will be a family affair for Sheehy, who is a father of three and operates a local construction company. His wife Luly will be actively involved onsite. Daughter Alexandra will assist with administrative duties and 20year old son Nicholas will be the head counselor. “Not only will kids experience success in their sport, they’ll learn sportsmanship and better social skills, grow more independent and make new friends,” said Sheehy. “All of this while having the time of their life.” Pinecrest Sports Camps is open to children 5 to 14 years old. It operates weekly, June 11 through July 30, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with early drop off and late pick up available. The cost is $135 per week or $500 for a four-week session. Good Government Initiative hosts UM workshop for international officials BY LEE SEPHENS

The Good Government Initiative recently hosted an international visitors workshop for Middle Eastern and North African public officials at the University of Miami Law School. The workshop included discussions on the responsibilities of public officials, case studies in ethics and a discussion on the role a free press plays in government. It was opened by Good Government CEO Katy Sorenson. “I cannot tell you what an honor and how humbling it is to have you here,” she said. “I truly believe that there are many things we can all teach other.” Through interpreters, the 16 public officials discussed Florida’s Government in the Sunshine Law with former county attorney

Murray Greenberg. The attendees also discussed ethics with Dawn Addy, chair of the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust, and examined various ethical dilemmas. The workshop closed with a discussion headed by UM journalism professor Sam Terilli, who emphasized that a free press wasn’t the only component to good government. “Just because you have free press, doesn’t mean you’ll have good government,” he said. “A free press is just one of the factors.” The conference attendees came from various countries and regions, including Kuwait, Morocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Sudan, Iraq, Algeria and Bahrain. Village film production company launches Internet fundraising campaign BY JESSE SCHECKNER

Palmetto alumnus Claudia Cifuentes and her sisters, Lisa and Karina, have begun an Internet campaign to raise money to help them produce a low budget feature film. Claudia Cifuentes is the writer and director for the film, while Lisa and Karina are the producers. Their production company is Pink Forest Films and they are using an Internet website called Kickstarter to help them find investors to finance their film. Kickstarter assists independent artists with a unique fundraising technique that offers incentive packages ranging from celebritysigned collectibles to an actual executive producer credit in a film. “We have an ambitious goal and it’s all or nothing,” says Lisa. “We’re building a community around our project and our cause before we even begin shooting.” Their movie script follows newlywed and developing novelist Diego Diaz, played by another Palmetto alumnus, comedic talent Nick Puga. His character is on a brief sabbatical in Miami trying to finish what he hopes will be his breakthrough novel. He unexpectedly becomes involved with a sexy bartender named Vanessa, played by Westminster Christian graduate Krizia Bajos, and is forced to re-examine

his marriage. The Cifuentes sisters say they are determined to produce their film and are sparing no ingenuity in bringing their dream to reality. As a supporting element to the film, they have begun an interview series on their website <www.aftertheweddingmiami.com> called Our Secrets to a Happy Marriage. On the website, they interview successfully married couples on their approach to maintaining a loving matrimonial union. “We wanted to reach out to some of the great couples we know to hear their take and ask them fun questions about how they knew they were meant to be together and what advice they would give to newlyweds,” says Claudia. The Cifuentes sisters’ parents operated an acting school and nurtured their daughters’ creativity. They will mark their 36th wedding anniversary this year. As the creative roles have gradually reversed, the sisters are maintaining that familial nature of growth, support and equality. Their mother will handle the catering for the film and their father has a small role in the film. All three sisters are contributing to the fundraising incentive program. Comprised of Guatemalans, Chileans, Mexicans, Cubans and Brazilians, this filmmaking troupe is representative of the Latin

culture that has brought out both pride and expectation in the Cifuentes sisters. “Latinos are now the fastest-growing minority in the U.S., but with a few exceptions our portrayal is still generally stereotypical or nonexistent,” says Karina. “The people in our story are trying to navigate their messy romantic lives like everyone else and they just happen to be Latino.” The Cifuentes sisters say they must raise a total of $75,000 by midnight on May 27 in order to fund their production. To date, they have collected about 20 percent of the money they need, so they are now appealing for help from Pinecrest and MiamiDade County residents. “We hope that people will recognize that

this film is a piece of homegrown art,” says Karina. For more information or to contribute to the Cifuentes production, go to <www.aftertheweddingkickstarter.com>.

New Dixie Belle Shops to open in early 2013

Artist’s rendering of new Dixie Belle Shopping Center. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY RAQUEL GARCIA

Dixie Belle Shopping Center originally opened for business the same year the country celebrated its bicentennial back in 1976. The 36-year-old strip mall, at 12185 S. Dixie Hwy., that once housed Pete’s Pizza Universe and Black Panther Karate among others, recently was demolished. A new modern version of the Dixie Belle Shopping Center is under construction, with the anticipated completion scheduled for sometime in early 2013, according to owner and property manager Henry Su. “We purchased the property back in 1986 before Pinecrest was Pinecrest,” said Su. “It had never been remodeled or updated since opening in 1976. As we have seen Pinecrest grow, we wanted to grow with the city. We hope to improve our shopping center to better serve the Village and envision ourselves as part of the area’s future growth.” Although the center’s size has been reduced from the original 40,000 square feet to 27,725 square feet to comply with Village “green space” guidelines, two new buildings will be erected and a more parking added. The original u-shaped mall was truncated on the east side at the spot where Pizza Universe was located. That space will now accommodate Building One, a 7,437-square-foot structure that is very near to being fully leased. A drive-through Starbucks is slated to relocate from its original Suniland location and a Chipotle Mexican Grill franchise is expected to follow, pending final lease agreements now in

negotiation. The 3,643-square-foot second new building to go up, Building Two, will be home to a single-user, drive-through bank, according to property manager Su. Potential tenants are under consideration. Buildings three, four and five are located on the west side of the property, where Dr. Juan Salvat’s dental practice, the Kumon Math and Reading Center, and Jill Mallory’s Dance Studio are scheduled to return. Pinecrest planning director Steve Olmsted said construction seems to be moving along nicely. “The Village anticipates a very attractive, modern redevelopment ahead,” said Olmsted. “The building and planning department reviewed and approved the site plan. The project was then approved by the Village Council on Feb. 21 and construction began shortly thereafter.” Once construction is finished, Village building inspectors will review the electrical, plumbing and structural elements of the project and, if all is in order, will issue a certificate of occupancy. “These inspections will occur individually as various components of the work are completed,” said Olmsted. According to Su, original Dixie Belle businesses like Coldwell Banker, Beltone Hearing, Pinecrest Chiropractic, Matisse’s Hair Loft, Black Panther Karate and My Derma Clinic Day Spa have relocated, but maintained Pinecrest addresses. Su Investment Corporation owns and manages seven mall locations in Florida. For information, call 305-251-7616.

Karel Foti named to BCVI Foundation Board BY NANCY EAGLETON

Karel Kutner Foti has been named to the board of directors of the Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute Foundation and also will serve as a member of the Baptist Health Foundation board, the fundraising arm for Baptist Health. Foti, a Kendall resident and a Realtor with Esslinger Wooten Maxwell International, operates Florida Paradise Properties with her son Rick Wieder. She has worked in the real estate business since 1981 and specializes in South Florida commercial and luxury real estate. Her affiliation with Baptist Health began many years ago when she served as a “Pink Lady” at Baptist Hospital. “There were several of us in our 20s who declared that we were too old to be called Candy Stripers,” said Foti. “I still have the service pin that I received for the 100-plus volunteer hours I served. Even then, Baptist was a bright spot for me.” Years later, Foti’s mother was a patient under the care of Dr. Barry Katzen, Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute founder and medical director. “Dr. Katzen and the entire team at the Institute took wonderful care of my mother,” said Foti. “Fast forward a few years and here I am able to serve Baptist Health in this way. I’m so happy to be in a position to give back to this organization and the community that I’ve grown up in.” As a member of the Capital Improvement Committee, Foti’s mission is to continue to raise money for the Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute’s $60 million expansion project at the Baptist Hospital campus in

Kendall. A benefit concert performed by international superstar Celine Dion in December kicked off the campaign. Through growth and innovation, the Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute will broaden its research program and ensure that medical breakthroughs continue to be made in South Florida. The Institute will create centers of specialized care and prevention and attract and help train the next generation of world-class physicians. “Contributions to this expansion will ensure that high-end, cutting-edge care is accessible to everyone,” said Foti. “This is an incredible opportunity for all of us to make a difference in our community.” For more information, call Foti at 305960-2444, Sean Kramer at Baptist Health, 786-596-6535; or go to <www.BaptistHeart.net/foundation>.

It’s time for Goombay! Goombay! Goombay! BY CARL RACHELSON

Judging from our recent rainy weekends, if no one has yet made it official, now is the time to admit to yourself that the season has changed. We are all slow to come to grips with a number of our shortcomings; we may need to exercise more, eat differently and complain less, but realizing these things and making the changes are two different things. Despite our desire to hold on to our glorious, dry, humid-free springtime, summer has awakened and you’d better find some shelter if you are pedaling here and there. However, before you lament the end of paradise, Coconut Grove will hold its 36th annual Goombay Festival on June 1-3, I suppose rain or shine. The Goombay Festival pays respect to the first black Bahamians to arrive in South Florida. Originally craftsmen and laborers, they rooted themselves to an area near Douglas Road and Grand Avenue; perhaps you’ve seen the few remaining long,

straight and narrow shotgun houses. Thirty-five years ago, someone decided to pass along a bit of the culture and here we are today giving some proper love to nearby islander history. Goombay celebrations are held throughout a number of places in the Caribbean; ours fills the Grove, makin’ lots of dancin,’ prancin’ and romancin’. It’s a slice of Mardi Gras, a piece of Mummers Parade and a miniature Carnival, meaning sequined costumes, strutting marching bands, fancy floats and curbside culinary opportunities. Oh yeah, if it’s not raining, there will be bicycles everywhere, too. There are always bikes in the Grove. We all know, though it sometimes fails to register, that there is a different world near our shores and it is not necessarily Atlantis. The beats of the islands, the simmering stews, the local crafts; all are so close, but so far away. For a weekend in June, we can reacquaint ourselves. A colorful parade awaits all who partake. Percussion, whistles, bells and beats will roll down the avenue Saturday and Sunday, warm vibes wafting through the community. Other events include a kickoff set, historical brunch, and gospel service all spelled out on the website. As always,

ART in MIAMI

Junkanoo music – the above-mentioned instruments, plus horns and scrapers – will be the festival’s constant chaperon, there whenever you need it. Over the years, appearances have been made by R&B acts like the Temptations, rappers and NBA players, so if you are star-struck, you might want to make an appearance. Young Israel to mark 25th anniversary in Village

Young Israel Synagogue today houses a beautiful sanctuary, mikvah, classrooms, library, meeting rooms, administrative offices and kitchen/catering facilities. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY LEE STEPHENS

Young Israel of Kendall will celebrate its 25-year anniversary in Pinecrest with a gala dinner on May 31. Rabbi Hershel Becker recalls that when the synagogue moved into the Village a quarter-century ago, a block east of Suniland Shopping Center at 7880 SW 112 St., it began in a small house where daily services were conducted, meetings held and other services provided to the community. Soon, a new building was erected to house a beautiful sanctuary, mikvah, classrooms, library, meeting rooms, administrative offices and kitchen/catering facilities. The Young Israel Synagogue will mark its anniversary by recognizing people who have been instrumental in its development

over the last 25 years and previously honored at its annual dinner event. The evening program will give special recognition to those community leaders who have been instrumental in building and maintaining the synagogue’s presence in the community. Festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, with cocktails and wandering minstrels playing and humming 12th century Rashi nigunim. Hors d’oeuvres will be served followed by a catered dinner, music and other activities. A journal ad book will be available as a keepsake of the Young Israel 25th Anniversary dinner celebration. For more information, call 305-2326833, email <yikendall@aol.com> or go to <www.youngisraelofkendall.com/yikendall@aol.com>.

Locks of Love receives gift from 15-year-old

Barry Neal, a 15-year-old Palmetto Bay resident, had long hair — very long hair. After growing it for over two years, it reached a length well beyond his shoulders, way down to the middle of his back. When Neal learned of Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that accepts donations of human hair in order to make hairpieces for economically disadvantaged children suffering from long-term diseases that result in hair loss, he visited the organization’s website. Then, after downloading the donation form, Neal visited Great Clips, a new location in West Kendall owned by franchisee Carlos Rivera. This salon, located at 14681 SW 104 St. (in the Shoppes at 104), donates haircutting service for people who donate their hair to Locks for Love. Great Clips stylist Benita Alonso care-

fully separated Neal’s hair into several bundles, securing each with tightly wound rubber bands. She then measured and cut each hair bundle, resulting in four 12-inch sections for donation. Rivera immediately collected the donation, packaging it very carefully, and placing it into a shipping box destined for Locks of Love. Rivera said that he had only been open a few weeks at that time, but already had seen several people come in to donate their hair. He said that all of them were young, but Neal was the youngest donor he had seen at his salon. When asked why he decided to cut his hair after growing it for so long, Neal said that he did it in order to make the donation. Locks of Love still is looking for hair donations, with a minimum required length of 10 inches of hair available to cut. More information is available online at <www.locksoflove.org>.

Enjoy your kids at the JCC Family Fun Day Linda K. Landy ALPER JCC NEWS “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone!” Those lyrics from Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi (one of my favorite songs in college) have been playing over and over in my head a lot lately. My mother wants everybody together for her mother’s day celebration. This is not easy. One grandchild lives in New York, another is in Gainesville and two are in Orlando. The one married grandchild needs to coordinate with his wife’s parents. Then there’s my generation. One is on a special diet and can’t eat anything we are trying to serve. One is only available in the morning because the date coincides with her son’s birthday and they have planned a dinner. The other is only available in the evening because her son is flying in from New York that afternoon. The perfect child (guess who) is available for anything. It makes you long for the days when the kids were little and there were few conflicts. We really didn’t appreciate it then — don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone. I urge all you young families out there to take advantage of this wonderful time before it slips away; schedule family activities on a regular basis. The Dave and Mary Alper JCC is offering the perfect forum for family fun, Shabbat Family Fun Day on Saturday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event

is free to JCC Members. Non-members pay $10 per person or $25 per family up to six people. Here are a few of the wonderful activities. Let’s start with the pool. Choose from a salsa class or water aerobics. For the kids, Swim Gym will have Grinch and Log Roll events. Land lovers will enjoy Danny Berry batting cages and a fitness challenge. For those who pre-register by May 14, there will be a tennis clinic, TRX family class and a 15-minute Pilates class with Theriam. Call 305-2719000, ext. 284, to register. For the kids there will be a gladiator bounce house, arts and crafts dirt cups, preschool bounce house and preschool fun bus with physical fitness fun on wheels. Tours of the ECD preschool are also available. Purchase lunch from Danny Berry’s concession or bring your own picnic. At 10 a.m. the ECD preschool will hosts a P.J. Library kickoff party with story time and snack activity. The preschoolers will read Sammy the Spider and the First Shabbat, and create spider-y snacks. The PJ Library is a program that promotes a love of reading while sharing Jewish values and traditions. Families in MiamiDade County with children from six months up to eight years old can register to free Jewish-themed children’s books, music and DVDs sent directly to their homes each month. The PJ Library is funded nationally in partnership with The Harold Grinspoon Foundation and made possible for Miami’s community thanks to the generosity of the Blank Family Foundation. The PJ Library is a program of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. For more information, call 305-2719000, ext. 301.

Earth Day celebrated with festivals, fun, ladybug release HAL FELDMAN Miley Estremera, 4, celebrated Earth Day by dancing around in the Pinecrest Gardens splash park. Her mother, Alyssa, drove from Miami Gardens because her coworkers told her how beautiful the park was and it would be a great experience for her daughter. Meanwhile Lisa Nesenman and her three girls Brooke, 6, Alexa, 2 and Paige, 8 weeks, relaxed under the shade of some Banyan trees. “We made our names and designs on bags, planted tomato, carrot and watermelon seeds and played in the park,” said Brooke. Meantime, Mom chimed in that Earth Day meant enjoying the outdoors and teaching our kids how to be kind to the Earth. No matter where you were throughout Pinecrest Gardens, April 15 was filled with joyful and playful Earth Day sights and sounds. Local band The Vibe — Alex Leeds, Dan “Mav” Levine, Albert Roque, Dean Crews and Ralph Fiol — played classic rock cover tunes in the Banyan Bowl to the delight of many. “When it comes to rockin’ the Earth Day, what you really want is the right Vibe,” said bass player Fiol. At the front gate, Pinecrest’s message was clear. Officials handed out native pine trees in an effort to put the “pine” back in Pinecrest.

Four-year-old Miley Estremera cooled down in the water park.

Beyond the community and fun, there were many groups raising awareness for many issues. Whether a prototype city inside one massive 35-story structure, how to save the native panthers, why it may not be such a good thing to add new nuclear reactors at Turkey Point or how the deep dredging of the Port of Miami may kill vast amounts of sea life, it was important to see, hear and take part in the discussion.

“The schools really got into this and enjoyed it immensely,” said Councilwoman Joan Lindsay. “Some made tee-shirts, wrote poems, sang special songs, performed dances and celebrated in other special ways in conjunction with the release.” Even the Palmetto Bay policing unit toured with the ladybugs and helped the kids spread them around the school grounds. When it comes to Earth Day celebrations, Palmetto Bay loves to involve the Village school children. Over a two-day period, the entire Village Council and members of the Palmetto Bay Policing Unit visited Winhold Montessori, Alexander Montessori, Westminster Elementary, Coral Reef Elementary, Perrine Elementary, Christ Fellowship, Palmetto Bay Branch Library, Howard Drive Elementary and the Ken Robinson Meditation Garden in Coral Reef Park. During that time, the kids released more than 70,000 ladybugs. Besides being a fun activity, it was educational and good for the environment. Did you know that the average ladybug will eat about 5,000 destructive bugs during its lifetime? That ladybugs have retractable heads like a turtle? Or that ladybugs have mouths that chew horizontally, not vertical? Along with the Mayor, Councilmembers Howard Tendrich, Joan Lindsay, and Patrick Fiore visited Howard Drive Elementary to help eight classes (more than 100 kids) release ladybugs into the surrounding brush. “The kids love the release and it’s a great learning experience,” said Principal Deanna Dalby. “It’s a wonderful thing that the Village does this every year.”

Jason Czerwinski kneels with his Eagle Scout project in hand. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Mother Nature’s rain on April 21 delayed an Eagle Scout project to the perfect day, Earth Day. Jason Czerwinski, 17, and a Palmetto High student, brought about 30 of his fellow Boy Scouts, troop parents and friends to Coral Reef Park for an all-day installation of distance markers. Czerwinski’s Hurricane District Boy Scout Troop 711 meets at St. Andrew’s Church across from the park. Czerwinski saw walkers and runners wanting to know how far they had traveled. He’s been out before marking and measuring the paths, but today made that more permanent. Czerwinski’s teams placed nine markers, each one-eighth of a mile apart to measure the one-eighth-mile exercise trails. Each marker is a cemented 4x4-inch, pressuretreated stake with a custom Plexiglas sign. Once Czerwinski turns in his project, he’ll likely get his Eagle Scout status within a month or two. He will join five active Eagles Scouts in his troop and a long history of Eagles in Troop 711. HAL’S HOMEOWNER HELP Right now is the best time to make sure your lawn looks good through the summer months. If you have a lawn, don’t procrastinate with killing weeds and fire ants now. The worst weed is dollarweed; it looks like a bunch of little green coins and it crowds out

grass and other desirable plants. Since dollarweed thrives in damp areas, stop watering for about two weeks and then apply an appropriate weed killer. They make ones that specifically targets dollarweed. Fire Ants are the insects that are likely responsible for large brown patches in your lawn. You can attack them with special lawn fertilizer spread across the whole lawn or attack the fire ant mounts with a direct chemical killer. Either way, get them before they get your green lawn. I’m always looking for interesting people and events for consideration in this column. Contact me at <www.MiamiHal.com>, <hal@miamihal.com> or <www.facebook.com/MiamiHal>. Hal Feldman is a Realtor with RE/MAX Advance Realty and is available for any real estate questions you may have. On Sundays, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. he is outside Wagons West in the Suniland Shopping Center to talk real estate.

BETH AM TEMPLE TALK

It’s Party Time at Temple Beth Am BY RITA DIAZ Membership Director

Everyone likes to share special moments with friends and family and everyone loves a great party, but did you know that Moses also told us it was a good thing to do? He reminded the people who were just about to enter the Promised Land that it was imperative to take time to celebrate and rejoice over their good fortune. Although we really don’t need permission from a biblical leader to have a party, it’s good to know that we’re following God’s word when we do. Temple Beth Am, 5950 N. Kendall Dr., will host a “Party and Bridal Expo” and we are ready to help you get started planning, whether it’s a Bris, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, Christening, Quince or Wedding. The Expo is free and open to everyone on Sunday, May 20, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., at Temple Beth Am. Invite your friends, family, neighbors and co workers. There will be tons of food sampling, specialty drinks and lots of great giveaways. Life-cycle events are cause for celebration. In Judaism, when a baby boy is born, we plan a bris on the eighth day of his life. This event includes a ritual circumcision, which connects the child to his Jewish heritage dating back to Abraham’s covenant with God. Boys receive a Hebrew name at their Bris, while baby girls are given a Hebrew name during a naming ceremony held during worship services. At the age of 13, Jewish boys and girls may become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, which literally means son (Bar) or daughter (Bat) of the Commandments. This rite of passage defines our youth as adults in the community, responsible for carrying out full moral and religious duties. The next life-cycle event is the wedding and we hope to host many of them in our beautiful Sanctuary

(complete with bride’s room), Chapel and exquisite Ballroom. Call me for a tour. And then there are birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and so many other accomplishments and blessings that are worth commemorating with a special celebration. At the Party and Bridal Expo, you will find party-related vendors that can address all of your needs and answer all of your questions. Take advantage of this opportunity to meet and interview these different vendors in one place. So, who can you meet and talk to at the Party and Bridal Expo? Who will give you ideas and suggestions? There will be photographers, videographers, bands and DJs. The florists can design a whole room or create an intimate centerpiece for a dinner party. Looking for party favors? There will be several options. Stationery and invitation needs will be met as well. If you are looking for impersonators, entertainment or set designers, they will be there too. Party planners will be able to point you in the right direction and take direction. Caterers and venue representatives will be able to help with menu ideas and location details and area hotels can provide accommodations for your guests. In addition to meeting the Party and Bridal Expo vendors, you will be given a free booklet to take home and use as a reference guide. This resource will supply additional names and contact numbers of vendors that can help provide party-related services. So, come join the fun, whether you’re planning something for next week, next month or next year. And let’s remember Moses’ words to the people, that not only must you take time to celebrate and rejoice, but it’s in those moments that we can fully appreciate all the blessings given to us by God. For more information, call 305-667-6667, ext. 107, or by email me at <rdiaz@tbam.org>.

Advice for getting through a divorce BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

Divorce Coach My ex-husband continues to make my life miserable. What I don’t understand is that he’s the one that had the affair. Why does he continue to act this way? Who knows and who cares? Are you going to spend your precious time and energy figuring out why? Instead, figure out how you are going to find peace in your new life. That’s where you need to put your energy. Who gives a rat’s behind “why” he’s doing it. He’s a miserable person. Are you going to be miserable right alongside him or are you going to take control of your peace of mind and happiness? List the ways he is making your life difficult (you are choosing to be miserable), then write a solution next to each situation that will give you peace. Don’t focus on what is fair or what the MSA says, but what will give you peace. After you do that, think of ways that you can attain that solution. Here’s an example. The MSA states that your ex has to drop the kids off bathed and fed at the end of his weekend. He doesn’t do it. The kids come home hungry and dirty. Your lack of peace is coming from the “it’s not fair” syndrome, “I’m going to make him comply” mindset and your lack of acceptance that he won’t. Here is the solution. Accept the fact that divorce is not fair, you will probably never get him to comply and accept that the kids will come home hungry and dirty, and turn that time into quality time with your kids. At the end of the day, it’s truly his loss and your gain. Think about this. Do you want to be happy or be right? How do I balance my new role of single mom and being a single woman? Great question and one of the biggest challenges of divorce. After a divorce, a woman is left standing holding a bag of pieces and wondering how she is going to put all of that back together in a new way. She has the

responsibility of comforting, nurturing and protecting her children, but she also has a responsibility to herself as well. She is now faced with the task of reinventing herself as a woman. The key word in your question is balance. So many times I see women focus so much on their children that they forget or don’t have the time and energy to focus on themselves. If you are happy, your children will be happy. Take time to reconnect with the woman in you and not the mom. There is nothing wrong in taking time out for you. A word of caution, don’t let people’s perception bother you. If you were still married, you would go out to dinner and leave your children with a babysitter, right? So, then why is it looked upon differently when a divorced mom does it? But people say things like, “You should be home with your children.” Don’t get caught up in what I call Divorced Mother’s Guilt. I’m not talking about getting divorced and going wild, I’m talking about dong what you would normally do. Keep the scales balanced. Note to Self: There is hope in all things new. Today I start my new life with excitement. Carl Hiaasen featured speaker at the Palmer Trinity Book Fair BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

The annual Palmer Trinity Book Fair features spectacularly creative table designs and a big-name author as a keynote speaker. This year’s keynoter, Carl Hiaasen, was a top draw, selling out the event. Hiaasen is well known for his often scathing columns in the Miami Herald and the twisted humor in his adult novels. But 10 years ago, someone suggested to his agent that he write a young adult novel — the result was Hoot, which won a Newberry Honor. His latest book, Chomp, already is atop the New York Times Bestseller list for children’s chapter books. It features another zany cast of characters and centers around Wahoo Cray, the son of an animal wrangler. Wahoo is not named after the fish, but that famous Florida wrestler and Miami Dolphin, Wahoo McDaniel. In his speech, Hiaasen said that when he was first asked about writing for kids, his reaction was that the suggestion came from someone who obviously had never read one of his books. His second was, she must not be a parent! “But my agent said ‘kids love humor and they especially love it when you make fun of grownups!’” Hiaasen said. He said he already had a newspaper column where he delights in making fun of grownups who are politicians. “And my wife reminded me emotionally I’d never progressed past adolescence,” he said. Hoot, his first book for kids, was ripped out of a page from his childhood. “It was totally experimental,” Hiaasen said, adding that he had his two-book contract written so that if Hoot was a stinker, he could get out of writing the second book. Before Hoot, the kids in his family wanted to read his books and he always said “no.” “Being a dad, there are things that are disturbing to grownups and to psychiatrists. We’re not going there,” he said. “They all loved Hoot.” Hiaasen talked a bit about his childhood in rural West Broward, where he often would come home with snakes, raccoons or other things that could bite or carry rabies. His mother would tell him “we’ve got to get rid of this before you father comes home!” But he would sneak the snakes or turtles into his room and then have to scramble when they would escape. He would ask his

siblings for help but most of the time they’d rat him out or his mother would discover the errant creature and let out a shriek. “I can’t say it was a normal childhood but it was a great childhood,” Hiaasen said. Because of his love for the environment, Hiaasen often is incensed by what happens in Tallahassee during the legislative session. He bases his bad guys on some of them and kills them off in odd ways. He sometimes is waylaid by people who think they know on whom the character is based. Hiaasen said it amazes him that they don’t recognize themselves. “This is a beautiful kind of innocence,” he said. Hiaasen is a Leonard Elmore, seat-ofyour-pants type of writer who does not know the ending of his book even three fourths into one. “Nothing would bore me more if I knew how they ended,” he said. “I want the ability to kill off a character. In a novel, if a character starts to bore me, I can have them step off the curb and get hit by a Metrobus. It just tidies up the plot lines.”

Live your best life now! BY PAT MORGAN

How will you spend your years? Are you ready to live your best life now? Far too many people postpone living their best life now in hopes of a distant time where everything is perfectly in place. They fantasize about the kids having finished college, the house (and everything else) being paid in full, the closets all in order and the garden in full bloom. Unfortunately for most that time never comes. They sacrifice their best life now hoping for a future day when everything is better. One of my favorite authors, Denis Waitley, talks about Someday Isle, that faraway place where one day you will finally be able to kick back and live life to the fullest. You have probably visited Someday Isle many times and said things to yourself like: Someday I’ll take a trip around the world… Someday I’ll finish my education… Someday I’ll take piano lessons… Someday I’ll write a book… Someday I’ll play more golf, scuba dive, ski… Someday I’ll learn to paint, draw, dance… Someday I’ll build the home of my dreams… Someday I’ll run for office or start a program for those in need. What a great way to escape the risk of failure and the pain of stretching outside your comfort zone to go for your dreams. Hanging out on Someday Isle, that seemingly safe, magnificent place where you can avoid flexing your courage muscles to make your goals a reality. Instead, why not make today the day you move forward to ensure that Someday Isle results in the lifestyle you have dreamed of and worked so hard to achieve. With the economic downturn and many people in transition and trying to find their way through the challenges of rebuilding careers, bank accounts, homes and lives, wouldn’t now be a perfect time to take a look at your own life and take steps that lead to your best life now, so that you don’t end up spending your years on Someday Isle? Here are my top four tips to live your

best life now: • See new possibilities. Be open to what is possible and begin to define what you want. Until you have defined your goal in detail, it is simply a wish. Get specific about what you want to accomplish. What is the end result? Is it a sales figure? An income or commission level? A new position? A new home or relationship? Think about what you want to achieve and write it down in detail. • Align with the right contacts. Surround yourself with people who support you in living your best life. Make it a point to invest in building relationships with interesting people, loyal customers and associates, fun friends and like-minded individuals. Building relationships is essential to success in any endeavor. There is very little we can do alone, there is hardly anything we can’t do together. • C reate a plan. How will you reach your goal? Without a clear plan of action, it will be difficult to stay focused and on track to move forward. Create a plan, get focused and do something every day for your dream. • Get started now. Do something right away to propel yourself forward to your best life now. There is power in stepping out in faith to follow your dream. These words by Abraham Lincoln say it well: “And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count; it’s the life in your years.” Are you ready to live your best life now? • EDUCATIONAL AND TEEN ADVICE • Toby Rose ASK TOBY Please help, my daughter does not want to attend a four-year college; she only wants to attend film school. We don’t have the money to send her to New York or Los Angeles, are there any film schools in this area? You are not alone in this situation. Perhaps your daughter will eventually return to school and earn her four-year degree. I always advise students to obtain their four-year degree first and enroll in art school afterwards. Please look at the video from Florida International University (FIU), one of the best four-year universities in our area. The website address is <http://journalism.fiu.edu> and the contact number is 305-919-5625. Following is a list of additional resources and institutions for your consideration: The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, 954-463-3000; Miami Film and TV Academy, 800-257-0402; MiamiDade College 305-237-1696. My ex-boyfriend is stalking me and I really need help. My dad doesn’t live with us and could care less about what is happening. My mom is exhausted from holding down two full-time jobs. I feel very alone and don’t know what to do. I’m glad you emailed me. Stalking is an extremely serious issue. First, visit your school counselor, assistant principal or someone at the school that you are comfortable talking with. This adult needs to call the police on your behalf so you can start getting help. Even though serious con-

sequences often ensue as a result of stalking, people often don’t want to be bothered when a teenager is being stalked. Therefore, teens are especially vulnerable targets. If you choose to designate me as a “safe person,” I will be glad to help you. We can call the police. Stalking is a very real threat; the consequences can be fatal. Do not ignore the problem. I have dealt with this criminal behavior before — probably 150 times over the past 10 years — and some outcomes are disastrous. Please email me at <tobyrose19@yahoo.com> and I will arrange to meet you as soon as possible. I understand this is a private matter. Please know that whatever you tell me will remain confidential; however, we do need to enlist the aid of the authorities. Readers, for those who balk at the seriousness of this issue, please Google “teenage stalking.” You will see an eyeful. One of my students experienced a horrific stalking experience at her high school. Her parents and I made a plan, an exit strategy, so she could leave her current school and attend another. I was saddened when none of the administrators took her seriously. I know this child. There was no reason for her to lie or make up false allegations. I hope the administrators at this school, and at all schools, will realize the severity of this problem and become a part of the solution. If anyone witnesses any type of stalking aimed at boys, girls or adults, please seek help for the victim.

Topical Phenytoin for Wound Healing BY SONIA MARTINEZ, RPH

Phenytoin is a drug commonly taken orally to prevent seizures. However, compounded phenytoin can also be used topically to promote the healing of leg ulcers, pressure sores, venous stasis and diabetic ulcers, traumatic wounds (such as war injuries), radiation-impaired wounds and burns, as well as to enhance the survival of split-thickness skin grafts in large chronic diabetic ulcers. Studies have shown that compounded topical phenytoin in the form of 2% aerosol powder or 10 % w/w ointment applied once daily for two to eight weeks significantly improved healing of recalcitrant neuropathic diabetic foot ulcers. Studies have found that topical phenytoin therapy compared favorably with other standard topical treatment procedures, and in some cares resulted in a shorter time to complete healing and formation of granulation tissue. The type of phenytoin and the preparation are important – ask our compounding pharmacist for more information.

Should you buy a short sale? or Shoot yourself in the foot. It might feel the same at times. So here is what you should expect in a short sale-the good, the bad and the evil.

T

he good--First you see this updated home on the Internet. Eighty-five percent of buyers preview their home on the Internet. The people bought it in 2005 or they took out an equity line on top of their mortgage and now they are upside down and need to sell. It has updated baths, granite kitchen and they moved the pool to build a wrap around porch that is amazing for parties. The price is great and even your husband is excited. You both leave work early so the back yard can be seen in the daylight. You love it!!! (Short sales are better priced than regular homes but not as good as foreclosures. ) I put in a contract right away. What should you pay? Depends if you get in a competition. If that happens expect to pay full price or more. The seller usually has a lawyer they insist you use-so they now pay your title because they are the escrow and title agent. Which does save you big money. You get the house and now are thoroughly confused what the time line is. Be assured

friends will tell you horror short sale stories—all factual of course. You only have to put $1000 down. There is no money spent on inspections or an appraisal right away. How bad can it get? The Bad-So the money is sent to the sellers title and escrow lawyer. I recommend my customers to hand drop it by to see the law firm or title company. If it is a PO Box that is not a good sign. These are the people who are negotiating the short sale. A short sale is much more about the seller than the buyer. Now the seller must give extensive records showing they qualify for a short sale. Then the bank that holds the mortgage does an appraisal to see if the price is true market value. If they want more money the bank will counter. ( I just had a condo that was bought for $48K get a counter of $67K .) If the bank changes the price you can cancel the contract. (So what is an Approved short sales?--homes that already have the appraisal and the bank has approved the sellers financial situation-RARITY) Did

6390 SW 112 ST - $1,189,000

the sellers mention there are two mortgages? A much harder short sale. That is a question to always ask!! Both mortgage companies can agree on the short sale but the first has to okay the payoffs for the second. Maybe they want the second mortgage to get $3000 and the second mortgage wants $5000. Yes, this is usually the pay off price even if the second mortgage is $75K. The first mortgage can nix it because they are in control. This after 6 months of waiting. The Evil-the bank approves the short sale. Usually the bank gives 30 days but the paralegal was on vacation and no one told you-- now you have 25. The contract is LIVE and all dates start quick. Time for that much bigger second deposit-ouch. The banks give exact dates with specifics and the sellers have to sign this. Make sure you get a copy. So now your mortgage guy has to jump on the appraisal and you need to have the inspection lined up yesterday. Don't forget to do the insurance inspections at the same time! If a problem is found with the home the seller usually doesn't have money to fix it but maybe the bank does. One of my customers got a free roof--but that is a rarity. Are you excited to close and move in? Remember, the owners are living there

free. Do you think they want to move fast? Would you? Actually I work with a short sale lawyer, Dania Fernandez, and we do this all the time. No short sale is perfect but you can find great deals. It is truly a lesson in patience. My sister, Christy found out she was pregnant in June. Went into short sale contract in July. Life was good. She closed last week on her short sale. She delivers in two weeks. Then we are going to have an amazing party under her wrap-around-porch by her moved pool.
