Mayor joins bipartisan coalition to end gun violence Read in Ellsworth, Maine

BY LEE STEPHENS

n an effort to combat the senseless gun violence that claims approximately 34 American lives every day, Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner has joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a national bipartisan coalition of more than 800 mayors. These leaders are committed to protecting their communities by keeping illegal guns and military-style weapons off streets and out of schools. Since its inception in April 2006, Mayors Against Illegal Guns has grown from 15 mayors to more than 800 across the country. The coalition also has more than 700,000 grassroots supporters, making it the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the country. The groupโ€™s co-chairs are New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. The Rivieres helped raise Atlantic salmon, which are on the endangered species list, and will be released into the rivers to help restore their numbers. Thanks for taking us along, guys!

Four years ago the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County began a tradition that brings the South Florida community together in the celebration of democracy. For President Barack Obamaโ€™s historic inauguration, we invited the public to watch the ceremony on the big screen. On Jan. 21, we will once again open our doors and invite South Florida residents to view history in the making. As Americans descend

This Dogโ€™s for You Say hello to Henry. Heโ€™s an adult Belgian Shepherd Malinois mix and he is one friendly boy! Henry came to us from a home of about 30 dogs, so he is used to sharing space with other dogs. However, we would love for him to go to a home where he would get a generous daily dose of oneon-one attention from his person because he enjoys being showered with love and affection. Henry seems to have a rather calm and easy going disposition, and he likes to simply lounge around. But he is quite a large boy and would benefit from having a fenced-in yard to explore. If you think Henry is the right dog for you, contact Born Free Pet Shelter at 305-361-5507 or go to <www.bornfree.petfinder.com>.

CHRIS PERSE Palmetto High School senior Chris Perse is an Eagle Scout. Perse did his Eagle Project at Chapman Field Park, in Nov. 2011. โ€œWe redid the whole platform around the concession stand,โ€ he says. โ€œWe installed a ramp and we weather-proofed tables and benches around the park.โ€ Perse chose to help refurbish the concession stand because of his love of baseball. โ€œIโ€™ve been a baseball player since second grade,โ€ Perse says. โ€œIโ€™ve always loved playing and the park has meant a lot to me. The platform around it was small and they didnโ€™t have a place to grill, so I thought it would be nice to give them a better cooking area.โ€ It took five months from when he first asked permission to work on the project to completion. โ€œThe recreational manager was very nice and theyโ€™re very happy to accept any help,โ€ Persesays. The day of the project he had 80 volunteers. He says he had expected to be done by noon, but a structural problem cropped up. โ€œThere was a two-inch gap between two landings in the platform,โ€ Perse says. โ€œBetween the old planks and the new area,

there was a small deficit in the height. We eventually figured it out.โ€ He and his father returned two or three times before finally fixing the problem. In addition to the concession stand expansion, the volunteers cleared the parking lot and mulched sections of the area. โ€œWe put in a ramp and had it wrapping around,โ€ he says. He raised $1,500 for the project, mostly from family and friends of the family. โ€œThe project cost about $1,000,โ€ Perse says, โ€œThe remaining money, we donated it to the park.โ€ Perseโ€™s love of baseball has continued and now he plays first base and outfield for Palmetto High. Baseball season begins in February, but the boys play all year long, starting the school year with league play. Perse says the players are all good friends and they have a good time playing together. They also work together on the Presidentโ€™s Day Baseball Clinic at Coral Reef Park. Perse says he enjoys working with the younger kids, teaching them how to play the game. โ€œIโ€™ve coached football before,โ€ he says. โ€œThat was with some friends at Pinecrest Elementary a couple years back.โ€ He has also volunteered at the Five Star Baseball Camp which is held each summer at Westminster. Although baseball doesnโ€™t leave him a lot of free time, he is involved in other extracurricular activities at Palmetto. โ€œIโ€™m on the newspaper staff; Iโ€™m the public relations manager,โ€ he says. Perse also writes stories and editorials. He says writing editorials is fun. And he is also a history buff. โ€œI love history. Itโ€™s by far my favorite subject,โ€ he says. โ€œI feel like history is a combination of everything. Itโ€™s such a broad study of everything that ever happened. Itโ€™s like watching a movie and itโ€™s real.โ€ His ability in history took him to the National History Bowl last year. He filled in for a friend who had a prior commitment. โ€œI went to DC,โ€ he says. โ€œWe did fairly well.โ€ โ€” By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

CRISTINA VALENCIA For most of her high school career, Gulliver Prep senior Cristina Valencia volunteered at Miami Childrenโ€™s Hospital. โ€œIn my freshman year, I realized after meeting with a counselor that I didnโ€™t have any special activities I could put on my college resume, so I talked to my mom about it,โ€ Valencia says. Her mother suggested working at Miami Childrenโ€™s Hospital for her community service. โ€œWhen I went to orientation, we signed up and they gave us a job,โ€ she says. โ€œI fell in love with working there.โ€ She went to the hospital often after school and twice a week during the summers. She spent much of her time at the Michael Fuchs Family Center, the facility for the parents and family members of children who are patients in the hospital. โ€œIt has a washer and dryer and a kitchen and they can bring their food,โ€ Valencia says. โ€œIt even has a spa. They allowed children and their sisters and brothers to get free haircuts. The people who give haircuts are stylists who are volunteers. We also have activities, which Iโ€™m in charge of.โ€ Valencia says they would figure out

activities for children between six and 12. โ€œA lot of brothers and sisters would enjoy the activities,โ€ she says. The activities would affect the children in many ways. โ€œI would see girls crying because they had not been exposed to another girl the same age because they have been at the hospital all this time,โ€ she says. The parents were grateful for the kindness and attention given to their children and the children would often tell Valencia that โ€œyou are my best friend.โ€ At school, Valencia is the secretary of the Gulliver Best Buddies chapter. Her buddy is Max, who is a year younger than she is. โ€œI call him at least once a week,โ€ she says. โ€œWe go to the movies or go to Game Time. I have this one-on-one friendship. He has really opened my eyes to why you have to be happy. He has such a positive outlook on everything. Thatโ€™s changed my perspective on many things. I love spending time with Max.โ€ Valencia says she loves the club and what it stands for. โ€œItโ€™s bringing light to the fact that we have intellectually disabled people in our community, but it doesnโ€™t mean you shouldnโ€™t be friends with them,โ€ she says. Valencia is the editor-in-chief of the Gulliver Prep yearbook. She joined the staff in 10th grade. โ€œIโ€™m more focused on the writing and working with my design editor on the template,โ€ she says. โ€œI wrote about it recently for my college essay. You need to be on your toes. You always need to be inspired to add little textures for your templates. I have a wonderful staff.โ€ She is also a part of a new club called Link Leaders. โ€œWhat we do is help new students and incoming freshmen with their transition,โ€ she says. The club matches up seven freshmen and one transfer student with two Link Leaders The new students have a friendly face in the hallways they can wave to as they go or they can stop them and ask questions. โ€œWe have kids from out of the country,โ€ she says. โ€œTransitioning into high school is difficult. I would have loved to have had one my freshman year. I only knew my incoming class.โ€ Next year, Valencia will be the one wishing for a Link Leader when she begins college. She has applied to Wake Forest, the University of Miami, Boston College and the University of North Carolina. She plans to study mass communications. โ€” By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

LEO ROCCHICCIOLI Palmer Trinity junior Leo Rocchiccioli helps younger children succeed in school as a volunteer for Breakthrough Miami. โ€œI started last year in the first semester of

school and Iโ€™m doing it again this year,โ€ he says. โ€œI did not teach over the summer. I tutored a couple of times on Wednesdays.โ€ He teaches the children English and Debate. He has discovered that he enjoys teaching children. โ€œThey are wonderful kids,โ€ Rocchiccioli says. โ€œThey are very nice and itโ€™s a fun time in the classroom. They have fun and I have fun teaching them.โ€ Rocchiccioli has fun even when the kids get a little hyped up after lunch. โ€œYou work with them,โ€ he says. โ€œThey are ready and they get you ready if youโ€™re not.โ€ When he is not volunteering, Rocchiccioli is involved in extracurricular activities at Palmer Trinity. โ€œI founded the debate club here this year with help from two other students,โ€ he says. Club members have been participating in school debates on water and water laws in preparation for the Fairchild Tropical Garden Challenge debate on ecological subjects. Over the summer, Rocchiccioli spent a month at Stanford taking a course on mock trials. โ€œIt was a cool experience and I got to meet new friends,โ€ he says. โ€œWe had a mock trial

at the Superior Court of San Francisco. I got to meet a real professor and he taught us like it was a real college class.โ€ Rochiccioliโ€™s goal is to study law and eventually become a lawyer. โ€œI like law and sometimes I think about politics,โ€ he says. โ€œIf I go into politics, Iโ€™ll go to Brazil (his home country) and try to help patch things up over there.โ€ He says Brazil has a growing economy that could grow a lot more, but the country is lacking a good educational system. While he continues at Palmer Trinity, Rocchiccioli is the literary magazine editor in charge of poetry. โ€œAll the work is sent to the teacher and she sends it to me, I send it to two other students and then they send it back to me with a yes or no,โ€ he says. โ€œItโ€™s an area I like to concentrate on.โ€ He discovered how much he likes poetry only a year ago in his English class. He even began to write his own. Rocchiccioli also plays on the Palmer Trinity golf team. He is proud of their season, which this year had more wins than losses. And he sings. He is in the choir and plays piano.

โ€œMusic is the purest form of expression,โ€ he says. He is also in the Investment Club, which has $50,000 for the students to invest. Profits from the investments are given to the school. โ€œWeโ€™re doing pretty well,โ€ he says. โ€œI have been involved for five years. We try to play some stocks that are a little safer and some that are a little more volatile.โ€ The club doesnโ€™t have rigid bylaws about how much they are allowed to spend in a week or a month, but the kids are careful and they tend not to lose. โ€œIn 2008-09 we did well compared to the market,โ€ he says. โ€œA few members do have their own portfolios. They tend to make suggestions as they make their own investments. I think everyone has the sense that this is real money. If we grow it, we have more. If we lose a lot, then this might be the end of the group.โ€ Now that he is in his junior year, Rochhiccioli is researching colleges that he will apply to next year. Heโ€™s considering going north to attend college, possibly in Washington D.C or Philadelphia. โ€” By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

Fresh from international success coach focuses on Gulliver sailing BY MARK SELL

Fresh from his top 10 ranking in a world sailing competition in Buenos Aires, Gulliver Schoolsโ€™ new sailing coach, Brian Kamilar, is focusing on placing his team in a major upcoming Southeast regional competition. Kamilar and his crewmate, Enrique Quintero of Miami, recently returned from the Snipe Western Hemisphere and Orient Championships, conducted in November near Buenos Aires. He placed eighth among 50 teams from seven countries in the Americas and Asia. Six boats competed with Team USA. All competitors had to qualify within their countries to participate, so those selected were their countries best sailors. โ€œOur goal was top 10, so we were happy where we finished,โ€ Kamilar said before switching the subject to his Gulliver team. โ€œLooking forward, our aim at Gulliver is to place in the South Atlantic District competition in April,โ€ Kamilar said. โ€œWith our new team, itโ€™s really important that our most experienced sailors help the least experienced. Thatโ€™s the best way to make a team strong.โ€ Some of those more experienced sailors participated in the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta, Dec. 26-30, at the Coral Reef Yacht Club before returning to regular competition in January. Ransom Everglades in Coconut Grove will host the Interscholastic Sailing Associationโ€™s South Atlantic District (SAISA) Mallory Fleet Racing District Championship on Apr. 12-14, in which top school sailing teams in the coastal Southeast and Caribbean will compete. The sailing team got its start this past August when Gulliver expanded its water sports program to include sailing, under Kamilarโ€™s full-time leadership as coach. The varsity team of 19 high school and two middle school sailors practices weekly at Coral Reef Yacht Club, 2484 S. Bayshore Dr., and competes every month throughout the school year. In addition, Kamilar conducts a weekly learn-to-sail class at the yacht club for middle-school students. โ€œThe team is improving at a great pace and our results at events show it,โ€ Kamilar said. โ€œWe are becoming very close-knit team and embracing the team-based idea of sailing, with everyone assisting each other to become better.โ€ Kamilar, 25, a Miami native, has more than 15 years of racing experience and more than 10 years of coaching experience. At age 8, Kamilar began his sailing career in the Optimist class. For the next seven years he competed in more than 100 national and international regattas, winning his first event at the age of 10. He was a threetime member of the U.S. National Team and a two-time member of both the U.S. North American Team and U.S. South American Team. He won multiple national events, including the Southeast Dingy Optimist Championships, Florida State Optimist Championships, and Biscayne Bay Optimist Championships. He also had two top five finishes in the Optimist National Championships. In 2004, Kamilar won the Bemis DoubleHanded National Championship and was one of Gary Jobson/Sailing World magazineโ€™s junior sailors of the year. In high school, he was captain and MVP of his team for three years. In 2005, Kamilar tried his hand in the Snipe and won the 2005 Snipe Junior National Championships. Currently he is sailing Snipes, J24โ€™s, and team racing in V15โ€™s. Kamilar competed in the 2011 Snipe World Championships in Denmark and placed in the top 15 among global competitors. Commissioner Suarez presents ideas for South Dade Busway BY DONNA SHELLEY

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Xavier Suarez is challenging residents of the county to โ€œthink verticallyโ€ when it comes to the South Dade busway. The stretch of bus lane which runs 21 miles from the Dadeland Metro stop to Florida City is getting a serious โ€œre-thinkโ€ by the County. Currently, a study by the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) is being conducted to examine ways to maximize the travel routeโ€™s future use. One proposal from MDX proposes making the route a toll road, widening the road and installing a series of elevated overpasses to mitigate traffic on South Dixie Highway. As one of the

communities along the route, the Village of Pinecrest expressed its disapproval of this idea. The Council passed a resolution dated September 11, 2012, rejecting this notion, citing concerns for increased traffic, a negative impact on local businesses and the need to expand rail service southward. Commissioner Suarez, vice chair of the Miami-Dade Regional Transportation Committee, proposes that the busway be trenched underground for the full 21-mile stretch. His concept uses only 60 of the 100 feet of available right-of-way. The bus trip currently takes about one hour travel time. The proposal could decrease that time to about 20 minutes. Suarez also suggests that pedestrian and bicycle traffic established within linear parks would offer a pleasant Miami-Dade Transit at Busway, underground concept Dadeland North/Southtrain stations to Florida City.

aesthetic above the underground busway. In a brief presentation to the County Commission on December 10, 2012, Suarez stated that the proposal would take care of two problems at once: the underutilized busway and Florida Power and Lightโ€™s (FPL) proposed above-grade transmission lines along South Dixie Highway. FPL has had considerable opposition to these lines from the communities that would be affected. Suarez suggests that the underground busway project would present the perfect opportunity for FPL to bury the lines. Speaking about his proposal, Commissioner Suarez said, โ€œThe underground busway will link South MiamiDade to major commercial and residential areas with an effective transportation system. Everything is there, the space, the rolling stock and the need.

This will be a good step forward in improving our public transit connectivity and turn a liability (busway) into an asset.โ€ Suarez hopes to finance the project using funds from the administration of managed lanes, surtaxes collected from the Peopleโ€™s Transportation Plan, as well as funds that had been ear-marked by FPL for the installation of new transmission lines. Currently, there are no cost estimates for the project. Commissioner Suarez represents District 7, which includes Miami, Coral Gables, Pinecrest, South Miami, the Village of Key Biscayne and other areas of unincorporated Miami-Dade County. He has three office locations: the Stephen P. Clark Center in downtown Miami, South Miami City Hall and the Frankie Rolle Center on Dixie Highway.

Time for Marlins to trade Stanton and Nolasco BY PRESTON MICHELSON

Marlins fans are in a sorry situation right now. Not only have they been bilked by their mischievous owner, but their favorite players are now scattered across the United States and Canada. What is even more asinine for this parsimonious front office is that they are holding on to remnants of a well-structured team in Ricky Nolasco and Giancarlo Stanton. This stubbornness stems from a slap on the wrist from the Major League Baseball Players Association in early 2010. The Marlins โ€œassured the union and the commissionerโ€™s office that they planned to use revenue sharing proceeds to increase the player payroll annually as they moved toward the opening of their new ballpark.โ€ Now that the Marlins are left in shambles from their trades, they are projected to spend approximately $30 million in player payroll. By comparison, a $30 million payroll would put the Marlins dead last in last seasonโ€™s salary rankings โ€” by about $25 million. This is a precipitous $88 million drop from last yearโ€™s team salary for the โ€œnew-lookโ€ Marlins. And with Ricky Nolasco taking up more than one third of the payroll, the Marlins are trying to salvage their reputationโ€”now, of all times. Although not monetarily driven, the Marlins are keeping Giancarlo Stanton for the same reason โ€” public relations. If this team were to care about perception, they would not be in this predicament. It is peculiar for the team to start caring about its fans now. The Marlins are headed towards a lastplace finish, so it is inconsequential whether Giancarlo Stanton and โ€œaceโ€ Ricky Nolasco are still in town. Stanton could garner a boatload โ€” a Herschel Walker type package โ€” if shipped off to another club.

CORNER Miami is already rebuilding the team and it is logical to surround these new prospects with more prospects. Nolasco could be sent to a contending team looking for a middle-of-the-rotation starter for a smaller sum, because of his whopping salary. The only reason he is still on this team is so that the Marlins can bolster their payroll. In Nolascoโ€™s case, the value to the team and dollar value in his paycheck is incongruous. He is the highest player on the team โ€” by $9 million. Stanton brings the most value to the team although he is paid the minimum salary, $490,000. Stantonโ€™s value will never be higher, as well. He still has one year remaining at the minimum salary and he is one of the most prolific power hitters in the MLB at age 23. However, his reticence to sign a long-term contract with the Marlins has been discussed. His affinity towards the West Coast and his lack of trust (rightly earned) towards the front office are among the detractors. If he wonโ€™t get locked up long-term, ship him off. There is no reason to have an oasis in this barren wasteland that is a Major League Baseball team. It hurts to visualize it and the fan in me hates me for thinking it. The realist in me knows that this trade is a necessity and that not making it could be a big mistake. 50% toll hike coming for Dolphin, airport expressways BY CARLOS GARCIA

Co-chairman, <RollBackTolls.com> Your Miami-Dade Expressway Authority has big plans for the future. They include a 50 percent toll rate increase on two major thoroughfares โ€” State Road 836, the Dolphin Expressway, and State Road 112, the Airport Expressway. MDX also plans to implement Consumer Price Indexing for future rate increases on all toll roads, including State Roads 874,878, 836, 112 and 924. That means if there is a rise in the annual Consumer Price Index, the MDX will automatically bump up the toll it collects electronically with these mysterious overhead gantries. Youโ€™ll never know it until you get the bill for not paying or your driverโ€™s license is suspended because you didnโ€™t pay that bill. And then when you get stopped for a traffic violation, youโ€™ll get thrown in jail because you didnโ€™t pay your toll bill. You think Iโ€™m exaggerating? Believe it! Itโ€™s happening every day in Miami-Dade County right now. Want more? MDX plans to install literally

dozens of these overhead toll gantries and collection systems on the full lengths of SR836 and SR112, exactly like they did on SR874 and SR878 back in 2010, South Miami-Dade expressways that never had any sort of toll until the MDX came along. So, there will be no more free rides for anyone that uses an MDX road. Do you or anyone you know use the SR836 or SR112 expressways? Then please tell them about what the MDX plans to do and ask them to attend the upcoming public meetings listed below and help us stop this incredible abuse of power. It is already very expensive to drive on the expressways in Miami-Dade County, expressways that our tax dollars built. Soon it will be even more expensive and we will not even be given the right to object to this incredible injustice. We the people have to organize now and fight the MDX before it is too late. We must create a united voice against this โ€œtollationโ€. The MDX board of directors has the power to raise tolls without any input or representation from the public that uses the roads. This is not only unfair, it is an injustice. It is taxation without representation! How do you feel about the MDX plan to raise toll rates by 50 percent on the SR836

TRANSPORTATION and SR112 expressways? Make your voice heard! Please spread the word. We cannot let them get away with this without hearing from the toll payers, you and me! Important changes to our expressways are coming and we need your input to help stop them from going forward. The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) will host a series of Public Reviews to provide the public with an opportunity to get information and comment on the implementation of Open Road Tolling, future toll rate increases and the gantry locations for SR 836 Dolphin Expressway and SR 112 Airport Expressway. The public reviews are informal and we encourage your attendance at any time during the workshops on the scheduled dates, times and locations indicated. Parking is free at all locations: Jan. 22, Tuesday, 6-9 p.m., FIU Maidique Campus, 11200 SW 8 St., Stadium Club. Jan. 23, Wednesday, 6-9 p.m.; Hialeah Wilde Community Center; 5405 W. 18 Ave. Jan. 30, Wednesday, 6-9 p.m.; Cutler Bay

Town Hall; 10720 Caribbean Blvd., Ste. 115. Feb. 6, Wednesday, 7:30-9:30 p.m.; Salvation Army, 1907 NW 38 St. Go to <www.mdxway.com> or <www.mdxort.com> to get information and to submit questions or comments. MDX representatives will be available at each public review session to provide information and respond to questions. The information to be provided includes general information on Open Road Tolling, toll rates, gantry locations, projects to be funded, SunPass and TOLL-BY-PLATE billing for vehicles not equipped with SunPass. Our grassroots group has created an on-line petition against these proposed toll rate increases. Please go to our website www.RollBackTolls.com and sign the petition today. Tell your friends, family and neighbors about it and ask them to sign the petition. For more information, email <tgarcia@mdxway.com>, call 786-277-9292, or write to MDX, 3790 NW 21 St. Miami, FL 33142, or email <info@rollbacktolls.com>.

Advice for getting through a divorce BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

I got divorced last month and I am feeling very overwhelmed with all the things listed in the MSA that I am responsible for taking care of, along with my own personal things (license, insurance, etc.). Is there a checklist or a company that will help me with all these matters? I donโ€™t know where to begin and all this could take hours. I work a full-time job and have three children at home. This is stressing me out. Following through with the MSA can be daunting at best. Rather than address your question myself, I went to Carlos Blanco who founded Aftermath, which helps people navigate post divorce issues, and asked him to address this: Your divorce is not done just because the Court finalizes it. Sorting through postdivorce matters means time and effort navigating through all the issues created by the divorce, many of which you are unfamiliar with and not able to manage. Once a divorce is finalized and the final judgment entered into public record, there are many items in the Marital Settlement Agreement (MSA), which need to be executed by one or both parties to the divorce. However, besides the items specifically listed in the MSA, there are many other notifications and changes required in order to properly separate the life previously shared by the former spouses, and in order to protect individual interests moving forward. The list and recommendations presented here is a prioritized guideline. A much more detailed list of action items can be found at <www.mattersofdivorce.com>. Simply visit the site and download the free Post-Divorce Checklist.

POST DIVORCE TOP 10 But with what seems like a mountain of task items, where to begin? What are the things that canโ€™t wait and should be addressed right away? Well, besides quickly tackling the Martial Status Agreement (MSA) โ€œto do listโ€, you should at a minimum address the following items immediately: โ€ข Cancel All Joint Accounts โ€” Terminate any accounts held jointly with your former spouse, and open new accounts in your name. โ€ข Will and Living Trust. First and foremost, make sure any existing will/trust with your former spouse is rescinded. Secondly, establish a new will/trust; this is especially critical if you have children. โ€ข Beneficiary Designations. Make sure to update your designations on any account or policy that allows such designations, among them being: life insurance policies, IRAs and 401(k) plans. โ€ข Medical Insurance โ€” If as a result of the divorce you are no longer covered by your former spouseโ€™s medical insurance policy, either file for COBRA or secure private

insurance. If you elect for COBRA, make sure to secure alternative insurance (private or through an employer) as soon as possible. โ€ข Life Insurance โ€” If you have children and your former spouse was the one covered by life insurance, seriously consider a policy of your own. โ€ข Motor Vehicle Titles and Insurance Policies โ€” Change all titles to reflect the proper ownership and update any insurance policies to reflect any changes in ownership, drivers and change of address. โ€ข Rework Joint Debt โ€” Refinance and remove your name from any debt previously held jointly, such as leases and mortgages and apply for credit on your own. โ€ข Online and Physical Access โ€” If you shared online credentials with your former spouse, quickly change all passwords and/or terminate the accounts. โ€ข Change or collect all keys/access codes to vehicles, vessels, real estate and other property. โ€ข Change of Address โ€” If you vacated the marital home, make sure to update all service providers, your licenses and especially creditors of the new address. โ€ข Change of Name โ€” If your maiden name was restored as a result of the divorce, you must make the corresponding change with creditors, the department of motor vehicles, on your passport, with the Social Security Administration and the department of elections, among others.

South Miami Hospital Sponsors All-America Park Clean-Up Day

BY DONNA SHELLEY

Volunteers armed with an assortment of garden tools attacked noxious vines and invasive exotics as they cleaned up South Miamiโ€™s All-America Park on Saturday, November 3rd. About 45 sturdy volunteers, employees of South Miami Hospital, were donating their precious time on a beautiful weekend morning as part of Baptist Health South Floridaโ€™s โ€œDay of Caring for Our Community.โ€ City Arborist Doug Baker identified the All-America Park as the one most overdue for a good freshening up. Remarking on the progress made by the volunteers, Baker said, โ€œThey accomplished a great deal today removing vines that were covering trees and exotics that really needed to go. Iโ€™m very proud to be a part of this and I thank all the volunteers for their work.โ€ The Day of Caring allows employees of the Hospital to give a little something back to the community and is part of a series of events over two weekends that include communities

As the Mayor removed a rather healthy Philodendron vine from a well-established live oak tree he said, โ€œWe are saving this tree from being smothered by vines and potentially damaged by high winds from hurricanes and other storms.โ€ Commissioner Harris was engaged in dumping load after load of unwanted vegetable matter. โ€œThis is a great thing for the community and Iโ€™d like to see if we can arrange more days like this,โ€ said the Commissioner. Dark Spots on your Skin BY SONIA MARTINEZ, RPH

Hyperpigmentation is a dark spot or patch caused by too much pigment in the skin. Although these spots may not be pretty, hyperpigmentation is usually harmless. The sun, hormones, and certain illnesses and medications can stimulate the skin cells to produce more melanin. Melanin is the substance that gives skin its color and what causes a tan in response to exposure to ultraviolet rays, but overproduction of melanin can result in freckles or larger โ€œage spots.โ€ Protect yourself: limit sun exposure, wear protective clothing, and use a broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15. Skin discoloration can also be a symptom of an underlying medical condition such as Addisonโ€™s disease, or the result of interaction between UV light and certain medications. Skin sometimes darkens after an injury, such as a cut or burn. If the discoloration bothers you, ask your dermatologist about using a skin lightener or chemical peel. Our compounding pharmacist can work with your doctor to customize a preparation to meet your specific needs.

โ€˜Bariatic weight-loss surgery saved my lifeโ€™ BY BARBARA RONDA

Bariatric surgery originally crossed my mind in the winter of 2010. I was significantly overweight and had developed terrible self-esteem issues. I found myself avoiding public engagements and began isolating. Invitations to my 20th high school reunion were arriving in the mail as a regular reminder that I was the heaviest I had ever been. I struggled with my weight throughout my life, which led me to fail at countless diets and spend a lot of time and money on unsuccessful weight-loss methods. That prompted me to educate myself on the various surgical weight-loss options available. One of the possibilities that immediately sparked my interest was the minimally invasive gastric sleeve procedure at Jackson South Community Hospital. The Gastric Sleeve Center for Weight-Loss Surgery at Jackson South offers free seminars for those interested in learning more about the option. During the consultation, I learned about the long-term and compounding threat to my health from obesity and the healthy benefits of the surgery. I became convinced that this procedure was the best option for me. I live a very hectic lifestyle with a demanding, full-time executive career and as a single mother of two teenagers. I could not afford to undergo a medical procedure with an extended period of recuperation. With minimally invasive gastric sleeve surgery, I learned that the average patient leaves the hospital the day after the procedure and is able to return to work just one week later. During my first preoperative visit I was diagnosed with morbid hypertension. This information was quite eye-opening for me. My blood pressure was so high that the doctor recommended inpatient stabilization. I had absolutely no symptoms, but was at risk for stroke. It took

the physicians three months of varying combinations of medications to stabilize me for surgery. I underwent successful gastric sleeve surgery at Jackson South in August 2011. My surgeons, Dr. Moises Jacobs and Dr. Eddie Gomez, approach all their cases as a team. From day one, I trusted them and believed that I had made the right choice. I was able to relax knowing that I would be safe in their care. Just three days after surgery, I returned to work. Not only did I feel great, but I knew I was healthier and would never have to take another blood pressure pill. Within three months of the procedure, I lost 92 pounds. But what I gained is

immeasurable. Today, a year and a half later, I am happy and unrestricted in what I eat, have renewed energy and have regained my self-confidence. I have become an advocate for healthy lifestyles. The decision to have this surgery changed my life for the better permanently. The medical team at Jackson South saved my life. Now I look forward to seeing my kids off to college and celebrating the many milestones that lie ahead of me. Free monthly weight-loss surgery seminars led by Jackson Southโ€™s bariatric surgeons are held at Jackson South Community Hospital, 9333 SW 152 St., at 6:30 p.m. the second Thursday of each month. The secret to smart goals BY PAT MORGAN

How many times have you set a goal based on what someone else wanted for you? Did you choose your career, car, home or hobbies because a well-meaning person, maybe a loved one, thought it was perfect for you? How did it work out when you tried to follow someone elseโ€™s goal? Were you successful? How did you feel about it? Was the goal aligned with your true values and dreams? When your goals are aligned with your values, something magical happens. You are inspired to take the action necessary to make them a reality. Why? Because they are about you! They represent what is most important to you. When you are inspired, you need less external motivation. Inspiration bubbles up from within and you find it takes far less effort to get into action. When was the last time you were involved in a project that you could not wait to get out of bed in the morning to get started on? Did you need motivation? Absolutely not, because you were inspired and engaged in something that was deeply connected to you. Inspired goals need clarity. I have found the SMART method makes goal setting easier and less confusing. Check each goal against the following five points to see if it is: Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Time sensitive I like to include one additional piece for goals that are SMARTY โ€“ the Y signifying you - putting you into your SMART goals. Following is a closer look at each of the aspects of SMARTY goal setting. S โ€“ Specific โ€” What do you want? Be specific. Is it a new home? What type? A Beach house, two-story Victorian, rambling brick ranch in the country? How many bedrooms? What color? What kind of kitchen? Is there a pool? Connect with the details and write them down.

M โ€“ Measurable โ€” How will you know when youโ€™ve reached the goal? Is it to save $10 a week? Lose 15 pounds? Increase sales? By how much? 10 percent or $10,000? How will you measure? A โ€“ Achievable โ€” If you have no savings and want to be a millionaire by the end of the year, is that achievable? You may win the lottery, but a more achievable goal may be to establish a regular savings plan which is a start toward your goal of becoming a millionaire. R โ€“ Realistic โ€” Is the goal something you can actually do? If youโ€™re five-feettwo-inches tall and want to become a professional basketball player, is the goal realistic? Maybe a more realistic goal is to join a league where you can enjoy the game or work out regularly to be your best and most athletic self by getting into great shape. T โ€“ Time sensitive โ€” When do you want to achieve the goal? Putting a deadline on your goal helps you stay on course and take action to make the goal a reality in the time allotted. Is your goal to take a trip? When will you go? Is your goal to clean out the garage? Finish a project? When? Y โ€“ Yours! โ€” Personalize your goals. They are about you and their achievement is for your fulfillment and happiness. They will be easier to reach when they honor who you really are. Do you have clear goals for 2013?
