Nov. 6 is the most important day of the year for America – it is the day we vote to elect our next president; it is the day that we, as Americans, get a chance to determine who we want to be in charge of our country for the next four years. As American citizens, we get to pick our leader through the ballot box, a responsibility that we are lucky to have and one that we should all treasure. We must take advantage of the opportunity. According to Census Bureau data, 131 million people participated in the 2008 Presidential Election; that’s out of 146 million registered voters and of 206 million Americans who are of voting age. Those who are registered and otherwise eligible to vote, but who don’t, are either tuned out or turned off, sick or just too busy. And that’s a shame. Voting is a right and a privilege. It’s hard to predict how that 208 presidential election would have changed if those who were eligible had voted. Perhaps John McCain might be running for re-election today; then again, perhaps not. No doubt the negativity of campaigning keeps many voters away from the

The Pinecrest Village Council has scheduled a special election for Tuesday, Nov. 6, to submit three proposed amendments to the voters. The special election will coincide with the Presidential Election. The amendments, recommended by the independent Charter Revision Commission, a board of Pinecrest citizens, relate to the swearing-in date of elected officials, budget reports and leases of Village property. The Village Council has unanimously endorsed all three amendments.

MORGAN MILLS Gulliver Prep junior Morgan Mills was on the Gulliver girls’ soccer team that was having a dream season until they lost in the regional finals. The team won 55 straight games and Mills, who plays midfield and

forward, was good enough to be mentioned in the newspaper for her play. “I had two goals, so they mentioned me for that,” she says. Mills says say the team has the potential to do well in the upcoming season. Although the team lost several seniors, that loss was mitigated by gains by experienced freshmen. “It (the team) will have a good balance,” she says. Many of the players play club soccer, as does Mills. She has played for Miami Premier Soccer, which has a fall season starting in October. Soccer is a winter sport for high school. Although she is a terrific player, Mills says she is not planning to play when she goes off to college. “I’ve talked to many people who do it in college and I have no interest,” she says. When she is not on the field, Mills is on the board of Symphonettes, a service club that sends members to volunteer opportunities. Members usher at music events and raise money for music organizations. “I usually sign up for the Fairchild

things,” Mills says. “We always go to the kids section and help them there.” She joined Symphonettes because of her mother. “My mom was a member when she was young I wanted to join too,” Mills says. Last year Mills worked on the silent auction that is a big part of the club’s fashion show, which is their major fundraiser. “I organized it,” she says. “We sold almost everything. There was only one basket left. We set up the entire runway and we set up all the baskets being auctioned. We had more than 100 baskets.” The fundraiser was a huge success and the club donated the money to a variety of charitable organizations. At school, Mills is vice president of the Fishing Club. “It helps raise money for less fortunate kids so they can go fishing,” she says. This is now the club’s third year. The first two years were spent organizing and fundraising in hope of being able to organize a fishing field trip for needy kids. Club members have researched appropriate loca-

tions. Mills says the club was started by Austin Wood, who has a strong passion for fishing, as does her brother. “I’m not really into fishing as much as my brother and Austin, but I think the club has a really good cause,” she says. Mills’ passion is art. She has taken a variety of art classes, including drawing, painting and ceramics. Last year she made five projects, including a vase, tea pots and pots. “We used pinch pot techniques and coils,” she says. “You build up the coils up until it forms a vase shape. You make a base and start coiling it up from there.” Mills’ community service includes volunteering at Vacation Bible School at First United Methodist Church. “I’m a volunteer counselor there,” she says. “Basically the kids go to a class each day. You go with them and help the teacher out. When they go to recess you watch over them and you play games with them.” By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

ERIC DUSSEAU Palmetto High School senior Eric Dusseau bears a striking resemblance to his father, former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Charles Dusseau. He also shares an interest in politics. This summer, Dusseau interned for the Joe Garcia for Congress campaign “I did a variety of things,” Dusseau says. “A lot of it was making phone calls and going door to door. I also did research, spread sheets and data entry.” Dusseau chose to intern at the campaign because he wanted to do something that he liked over the summer. “One thing I was interested in was politics,” he says. “I thought about volunteering with the Obama campaign. My dad kind of knew Joe (Biden).” He says working at the campaign was fun and hectic, but also time consuming. Once school started, he had to concentrate on school activities, so he cut back on his time commitment to the campaign. “I’ll go when I can; on Election Day I’ll go and help out, whatever they need me to do,” he says. Working on the campaign taught him a few things. “I guess I learned that I enjoy the political process,” Dusseau says. “It helped build my skills in communicating with people — making a lot of phone calls and going door to door, conveying a message, which I think I got a lot better at.”

Going into politics in future is a possibility for Dusseau. “I’m not fully committed to a career or an area of study yet, but I’m thinking about it,” he says. One of the reasons he had to cut back his time at the campaign was because he is captain of the track and cross-country teams. “That’s a big part of my life and what I do at school,” Dusseau says.”In addition to practices at the school, I do a lot of running on my own. I enjoy running, it pushes you; but at the same time, it’s relaxing.” Dusseau says running is a sport that lets you get out of it what you put into it. “If you don’t train in cross country, you’re out of luck,” he says. He runs the mile and the two-mile races for the track team. “I’m better at the two-mile than the onemile,” he says. “I qualified for regionals three times.” He finished seventh in the regional meet as a junior. “I’ve gotten better every year,” he says. “I’ve been working at it a lot harder this year, with a lot of training on my own this summer.” His enjoyment of sports is likely one of the things that led him to volunteer as a camp aide at the University of Miami Mini-Canes Summer Camp between his sophomore and junior year. “I had fun interacting with the kids,” he says. “It gave me new experience because I didn’t have experience interacting with little kids before. It was fun doing that.” At Palmetto High School, Dusseau is vice president of the Debate Club and a member of the Model United Nations team. He is also in Future Business Leaders of American and takes part in competitions. He has done well in FBLA competition. “I ended up going to nationals,” he says, adding that his topic was economics. While he didn’t place at the national level, he learned a lot about economics. “I found out that I really enjoyed economics and I’m considering a major in economics,” he says. Dusseau is looking at a diverse list of universities for his college career, including the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, USC and Harvard. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

JASON WEISS Palmetto High senior Jason Weiss has turned his hobby into a business. Weiss is a huge University of Miami Hurricanes fan, so he began making videos and putting them on his You Tube Channel, CaneFreak2001. “I have more than 2.5 million views of my videos and over 4,000 subscribers,” Weiss says. “When I started out, I just wanted to learn how to make videos and then to make a slide show.” Some of his videos are even posted on the UM website. “The head coach, Al Golden, he shows my videos to the players,” Weiss says. “All the coaches love my videos too.” He has a variety of videos on the site, including videos to pump up enthusiasm and highlight game videos. Some players have told him they watch his videos before big games and others have requested he make new highlight videos for them. Those highlight videos of individual players and have led to making highlight videos for area high school athletes and some schools through his company Performance in Motion. He has created introductory videos for Columbus and Norland high schools and he created the introduction video for the Miami Hurricanes baseball team. Weiss also plays wide receiver for the Palmetto football team. He spent the ninth and 10th grade on the junior varsity team and joined the varsity last year. Weiss

began football in the Pop Warner League when he was in the third grade and played through middle school at the Kendall Boys and Girls Club. Sports have always been important to him, so in high school he volunteered to coach basketball at Pinecrest Elementary for Dade County Sports. The original plan was to coach football, but when there weren’t enough kids, he switched to basketball. Weiss says it was a good experience for him. “I developed better relationships with younger children; I learned how to cope with them,” he says. “I felt I had an impact with them, not just with basketball. I taught them lessons, like how to behave properly.” His community service work includes going with his mother and some friends to shelters and where they hosted birthday parties for residents. “I’d bring a football, my mom would bring coloring books,” he says. “Another lady would color with the girls. We would play sports for a day and bring pizza. They loved it.” Weiss also devoted some time to the Mitt Romney campaign, going door-todoor and making phone calls. “I was somewhat influenced by my dad,” he says. “He took me there one day and I started to help out.” At Palmetto, in addition to playing football, he’s the treasurer of the Social Science Honor Society and a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, the Science National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America. “I went to the state competition,” he says. “I got third place in District and went to states, but unfortunately I didn’t make it to nationals.” Weiss had a finance internship over the summer at Brightscape Corporation, a certified financial planning company owned by his father. Weiss and a friend were taught about income statements and balance sheets, and given a small project on the housing market. “We had to forecast housing,” Weiss says.”He lectured us on finance and accounting; what finance is like.” Weiss says his primary focus in college will be economics, possibly with a minor in finance or sport management. CANDIDATES, from page 1 polls, and that is a concern this year. Many states have been working to make the voting process more convenient and less burdensome for voters. But these reforms have come under attack throughout the nation, which may mean that many voters in 2012 will find it more difficult to cast their ballot. And, while it is important that you vote, it is equally important to be educated on the issues that you will cast your ballot on. This year’s ballot is long and complicated, so please get a sample ballot and study it carefully in advance. There are 10 proposed amendments to the State Constitution and a dozen proposed amendments to the MiamiDade County Charter. I have put together a list of endorsements by the Pinecrest Tribune. Those endorsements are printed below. Please read them and then make your own decisions.

THE PINECREST TRIBUNE ENDORSES BOB HINGSTON FOR PINECREST VILLAGE COUNCIL, SEAT 3 We feel that Hingston has a proven record of dedication to the community of Pinecrest where he has been a resident for 30 years. His accomplishments are considerable, with more than 14 years of service on the Village Council and other Hingston –––––––– Village panels, and more than 30 years of community involvement. Hingston served as a founding councilmember in Pinecrest from 1996-2006 and was Vice Mayor from 1996-98, 2001-02 and 2005-06. He also distinguished himself as the chair of the Building and Zoning Committee and the Parks and Recreation Committee. He was a member of the Pinecrest Planning Board from 2008-11 and served as its chairman from 2009-11. He served on the Community Center Advisory Committee in 2010-11 and when the Village of Pinecrest needed a new manager in 2011, he served on the Manager Search Committee. With such an intimate working knowledge of Pinecrest and its history, Hingston will be a solid, tested and beneficial presence on the council as it deals with the important issues in the coming months and years. Hingston has been a partner at the Coral Gables law firm of Welbaum Guernsey Hingston Greenleaf Gregory Black Rune & Thomas since 1974. He received his law degree in 1974 from the University of Florida after obtaining his BA from Ripon College in 1971. Hingston’s active participation in the community includes serving with the Howard Palmetto Baseball/Softball Association (Howard Palmetto Khoury League) from 1983 to the present in varying positions as manager, coach, baseball commissioner, vice president and as a member of the Rules Committee and Executive Committee, the Wayne Moore Award panel and the 50th anniversary Reunion Committee. Additional community service includes his work with the Suniland Optimists (Optimist Club of Suniland) from 1979 to the present.

PINECRESTTRIBUNE.COM

He has served on the board of directors, as Coach of the Suniland Sundevils (a Pop Warner League team) and as a coach and commissioner of the Suniland Basketball team. He is a Life Optimist. Bob Hingston will be an able and dedicated representative on the Pinecrest Village Council and deserves your vote.

THE PINECREST TRIBUNE ENDORSES JENNIFER WOLLMANN FOR PINECREST VILLAGE COUNCIL, SEAT 1 Wollmann and her family have lived in Pinecrest since 1992 and that decade of change has made her determined to be a part of the team that will chart the course of the Village as it faces many key issues coming up in the near future. Wollmann She has served on the –––––––– Village’s Pinecrest Parkway Visioning Committee and the MDCPS Family and Community Involvement Advisory Budget Subcommittee. She also served on the Village Planning Board, the Community Foundation of Pinecrest, Miami-Dade Green Building Council, Florida Realtors Association Sustainable Growth Committee and the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Site Selection Committee. Committed to educational issues affecting the children of the community, Wollmann has served as legislative chair of the PTAs at Pinecrest Elementary, Palmetto Middle and Palmetto Senior High School. She has vowed to continue to work with area schools so they remain competitive and increase their national and state rankings. Her concern for the school system led her to lobby for MiamiDade County Public Schools, as well as other important matters. Wollmann is deeply concerned about such major issues as FPL’s plans to run high-power lines down the US 1 corridor, the county plan to expand the current US-1 busway, which would include Sunpass express lanes similar to those on 95 and would result in a structure as tall as Metrorail running along US 1 from Dadeland to Florida City, which would impact the Village of Pinecrest as well as other communities. She is also concerned about the current high windstorm insurance rates. As an active EWM Realtor in the Miami Association of Realtors, Wollmann has knowledge and experience that should prove helpful in addressing related issues that can impact Pinecrest or that come before the council. Wollmann has said that as a council member she would encourage businesses and landowners along US 1 to make stores more appealing while protecting the privacy of neighboring residents, and continue working with state legislators and the Miami Association of Realtors to address windstorm insurance reform. With her knowledge of the issues that concern Pinecrest residents and her desire to keep the Village a multi-generational community, the Pinecrest Tribune feels that Wollmann deserves your vote.

THE PINECREST TRIBUNE ENDORSES BILL NELSON FOR UNITED STATES SENATE Bill Nelson, a fifth-generation Floridian,

He was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1978 where he served six terms representing Orlando and the Space Coast and became Nelson an early advocate for a bal–––––––– anced federal budget. She was elected to the Florida State House of Representatives in 1982 and the Florida Senate in 1986. She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1989 and has been strongly returned to Congress ever since, currently representing Florida’s 18th Congressional District, a diverse area that includes Miami, Little Havana, Coral Gables, Pinecrest, Miami Beach, Westchester and the Florida Keys. Stone sculptures from Zimbawe to be displayed at Fairchild BY PAULA FERNÁNDEZ DE LOS MUROS

Chapungu: Custom and Legend, a Culture in Stone, will soon grace the lowlands of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden with 82 unique, hand-carved sculptures by African artists from Zimbabwe. The seven-month exhibition will depict beautiful stone carvings of animals, families, customs, social issues and creatures of legend. Carved from opal stone, cobalt and springstone, these alluring works of art will be grouped by theme in Fairchild’s lowlands: Custom and Legend, Family, Nature and Environment, Role of Elders, Role of Women, Social Comment, The Spirit World and Village Life. These amazing sculptures range in height from three to 10 feet and weigh between 600 and 6,000 pounds. “Each of these sculptures is a unique, one-of-a-kind creation that the artists have produced based on their own ideas and passions,” says Roy Guthrie, Chapungu Curator. Many of the 35 artists represented are from Zimbabwe’s native tribe, the Shona people. The Shona tribe believes that the “Chapungu Bird” is a good omen, bringing them protection and good fortune. Chapungu is a metaphor for the Bateleur Eagle, Terathopius ecaudatus, a powerful bird of prey that can fly up to 300 miles a day at 30 to 50 miles an hour and lives in the savannahs, open forests and semideserts of central and southern Africa. In addition to enjoying the exhibition, visitors and the community can create their own original sculpture with the help of a Chapungu artist in residence during one of several five-day workshops held Tuesday through Saturday in a pavilion near the

VOTE , from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– The Nov. 6 ballot is 10 pages long. Of course, the most important decision you will make is who you will vote for as our next president. But, after that decision, Pinecrest has a very important issue on the ballot and we need your attention to this issue as well. It will impact whether we can go forward as planned to bring a wonderful new restaurant to Cypress Hall at Pinecrest Gardens. The bottom line is that the revisions are necessary to pursue a restaurant without the Village having to invest a million dollars or more of your tax dollars into the improvements. We want to create the opportunity for the restaurateur to make the investment by providing us the flexibility of negotiating a longer lease. So, if you want to see a restaurant, VOTE YES on the charter amendment regarding leases. The ballot language is below: The Charter Revision Commission has recommended that the Village Charter be amended to provide an exception for foodservice leases in Cypress Hall at Pinecrest Gardens subject to a 4/5 vote of the Council. Shall the above described amendment be adopted (Yes or No)? Voters also will decide on two other proposed amendments. One relates to the swearing-in date of newly elected members of the Village Council. The charter current-

ly provides that a newly elected official be sworn in the next day after their election. The commission has recommended a change to provide that the term of office of any elected official shall commence on the seventh calendar day following the certification of the election by the Village Clerk. This ensures that the election results are final, as well as provides the newly elected official time to invite family, friends and supporters to the swearing-in ceremony. The other charter amendment relates to budget reports. The current language requires the manager to submit a quarterly budget report to the Village Council. The recommended change would require a monthly report which conforms to the actual practice of the manager. All registered voters of Pinecrest may cast ballots and make a decision on these proposed charter amendments. For a copy of Pinecrest’s sample ballot, including the charter amendments as well as two Village Council seats, visit <www.pinecrestfl.gov/elections>. If you have questions regarding any of the proposed charter amendments, please feel free to contact me at <clerner@pinecrestfl.gov> or the members of the Village Council at <council@pinecrest-fl.gov>.

It is illegal to provide teen house parties with alcohol COMMENTARY

BY HELEN WITTY

It is against the law to serve alcohol to minors in your home! This is no surprise. The surprise may be that the “House Party” law was toughened in July, 2011 and the consequences for adult hosts heightened. Our dedicated community police chiefs are committed to enforce this law. Why? Because underage drinking causes real harm to our youth, to our communities and to you. Contrary to the popular myth that underage drinking is a “right of passage” causing no harm, continued research warns that teens who drink are far more likely to engage in violent behavior, suffer sexual assault, fail in school, be involved in a car crash, suffer depression and even commit suicide. These dangers are well known. What you may not be aware of is the devastating affects that alcohol can have on a teenager’s developing brain. The adolescent brain is much more susceptible to drug dependence and addiction than the fully developed adult brain. The earlier that alcohol use starts, the more likely the person is to become dependent. Addiction follows a process (use, abuse, addiction) that in young people can be frighteningly quick – a matter of weeks or months. Many of our youth are sent off to college already dependent on the drug, only to become addicted for life in the college social scene, where alcohol is prevalent. Let’s be clear here. Not all teenagers drink alcohol. There are plenty of teens who have been educated on the dangers of early alcohol use and have chosen to stay sober until age 21 – when the risk of addiction later in life is reduced by five times. Where did these clear thinking, self-aware

These are lives we can save by working together. It is simple. How?

young people receive this “say no to drugs” education? Seventy five percent of them report they make their decisions about alcohol based on the influence of their parents. So here we are, right at home; parents. Our role here is vital, so do not ignore the danger, learn the truth. Alcohol, a drug that depresses the central nervous system, kills more of our youth than all other drugs combined. Understand that giving alcohol to a young person harms their health and development. It is against the law. Do not rely on the convenient myth that there is no problem in Europe and other countries where children are allowed to drink. This is not true. There are huge addiction and binge-drinking problems in youth of other nations. The number of health problems, for example liver cirrhosis and certain cancers, are much higher in nations where alcohol consumption starts earlier than in the United States. Of special importance to our Magic City, a city with a Hispanic majority: Hispanic youth are more likely to drink and get drunk at an earlier age than non-Hispanic white or AfricanAmerican young people. Yet, with all this danger, the majority of teens who do drink get their alcohol from adults and in private homes, many from their own homes. Research shows that teens given alcohol at home will drink more frequently and in a higher quantity when away from home. They are more likely to get in a car with someone who has been drinking, drink and drive themselves and drive drunk later in life. It is just not possible to “teach” the adolescent brain to drink or make true the fairy tale that adolescents can learn to

drink responsibly at home. Stand up for the law and for the health and welfare of our youth and communities. Perhaps I am more tuned in to the danger because my 16-year-old daughter was run down and killed while roller-blading on a bikepath on a sunny afternoon 12 years ago. Nobody in the car that ran her down was over the age of 18. The driver and her companions came from a house where they spent the afternoon drinking tequila and smoking marijuana. Adults were present and it was an environment where adolescent use of alcohol and other drugs was tolerated. One of the passengers was arrested six years later for marijuana possession. I know the danger, the despair, the grief and tragic loss brought on by underage drinking. I hope you never know it so personally. Now that school has started again, please join me and our police chiefs and officers to help stop the many house parties that cater to youth and release drunk teenagers on our streets. It is utterly ineffective, naïve and downright dangerous to throw a party with alcohol for youth and justify it by taking the car keys. It is against the law. You may take away the keys, but you cannot take away the harm you cause those teens. To those adults who continue to break the law and host parties, don’t be surprised if you are arrested and held liable. You may even be charged with a first-degree misdemeanor, which can come with a prison sentence and a permanent criminal record. The stakes are too high. Every year 6,000 people — people of all ages — lose their lives due to underage drinking.

• GET CURRENT AND ACCURATE INFORMATION Madd.org/powerofparents, samhsa.gov, ncadd.org and informedfamilies.org are good places to start. • SHARE THE INFORMATION WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS Have a family meal at least 3-4 times a week -no television, no phones. Communicate. Listen. Talk-don’t lecture. • MODEL RESPONSIBLE ADULT BEHAVIOR I said this was simple; not easy, but well worth the effort. The life you save could be in your family or in your circle of friends. In 1964, The Surgeon General of the United States released a “Call to Action” on smoking because of the higher death rate of people who smoked. It took more than three decades for our society to take notice and in the meantime thousands of people died. We did, however, take notice and we made changes. So has much of the world. In 2007, the Surgeon General released “A Call to Action” on underage drinking and binge drinking for the same reason: It causes this nation profound harm. I hope it will not take us decades to take notice and change our behavior. The cost is too dear. For more information, go to <www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/calls/underagedrinking/index.html>. Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay ‘take a bite out of crime’ HAL FELDMAN Each year, Citizens’ Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County holds an awards ceremony to honor citizens and police officers who have contributed to the well-being and safety of our communities. This year, on Oct. 5, marked the 37th year for the organization run by the omnipresent and personable executive director Carmen Caldwell. Over the years, Citizens’ Crime Watch has grown to be a major force in organizing neighbors, communities and groups to combat crime. Today, it partners with 28 police departments and over 800,000 concerned citizens throughout Miami-Dade County. The night began with a cocktail reception where police department personnel and nominated crime watchers spent an hour visiting information booths, talking and spreading even more information about the latest crime prevention methods. In the crowd were Pinecrest’s new Police Chief Samuel Ceballos and Deputy Chief Peter Skumanich. Police officer Peter Judge, police officer Patience Glasko and Commander Greg Truitt represented Palmetto Bay’s policing unit. Inside, nearly 500 people took part in the awards ceremony. This year’s master of ceremonies was Miami television personality Brian Andrews. Having been away for five years, he returned to MC and also announced that he was re-joining CBS4, beginning Oct. 8. Ms. Caldwell assisted throughout and

reminded people how important Citizens’ Crime Watch can be. “The minute you educate people and tell them what to do and what not to do, then you know they’re not going to be a victim,” Caldwell said. The awards presentation was especially rewarding this year for both Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay. Pinecrest resident Helen Sonenreich won the Crime Watch Group Chairperson of the Year award and the Officer of the Year award was given to Palmetto Bay’s Peter Judge. Other winners were Miami-Dade student Crime Watcher of the year Brianna Linden; Cheryl and Richard Sejour for the Citizens Involvement Award; Crime Watcher Janet Masumian from North Miami Beach; and Crime Watch Group Leader awards went to Raquel Batista and Barbara Kraus. County Commissioner Lynda Bell helped hand out the awards and District 4 Commissioner Sally Heyman was presented with the Eagle Award for being a dedicated partner of Citizens’ Crime Watch. “Crime rates should never dictate the level of resources used to protect citizens,” said Commissioner Heyman, adding that Miami-Dade crime rates currently are at levels not seen since the 1960s. As usual, the night was a rousing success. “It’s our time to applaud those who do so much to keep our streets safe,” said Caldwell in closing. “Together, we do make a difference. I was especially pleased with the participation of our county commissioners. All in all, a great night!” As a Neighborhood Watch Group chairperson, I can attest to the value Citizens’ Crime Watch can bring to a neighborhood. Besides keeping people safe, alert and aware, it organizes them to be the eyes and

New tolls coming to SR836 and SR 112 as MDX seeks $800M BY CARLOS GARCIA

MDX, the acronym for the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, recently held a workshop where they voted unanimously to adapt a new toll rate policy on the State Road 836 and 112 expressways. The centerpiece of this new MDX policy is the toll changes that are planned for the 836. Currently at 11 cents per mile, a round trip on 836 from the Turnpike to downtown (30 miles) would cost the tollpayer $3.30 per round trip. If this round trip is made daily, that would equal $72.60 per month (based on a 22-day business month) or $871.20 per year. MDX will attempt to sell alternate plans to the public, one based on 16 cents per mile and the other based on 17 cents per mile. This roughly 50 percent increase with either plan brings the cost for this same daily business commuter to between $1,300 and $1,400 per year just on this one road. MDX claims that they need to raise an additional $800 million for “much needed projects.” MDX also announced that it will install ORT or electronic overhead toll collection devices — the same system implemented on the 874 and 878 expressways— on the 836 and 112 expressways. Toll collection gantries will be installed at every on-ramp, and one main gantry will go up at Southwest 57th Avenue. Plus, MDX wants to incorporate the CPI (Consumer Price Indexing) into future toll rate increases.

TRAFFIC MDX also wants to eliminate the administrative fee for toll-by-plate users and simply double that toll rate. And there’s a whole lot more of this good stuff in the works for unsuspecting consumers. The MDX must be stopped. MDX board members and staff are simply out of control and out of touch with reality. These faceless, nameless bureaucrats have no understanding of the financial situation of the average toll-paying commuter who must travel Miami-Dade expressways on a daily basis to get to and from home and work. In the coming months, MDX will do its best to put a “Smiley Face” on this “tollation” (tolling without representation) through public meetings and a public relations campaign. Every Miami-Dade County motorist must be made aware of what is coming and understand the consequences of what these new expressway tolls and toll increases means to their pocketbook. Carlos Garcia, a Miami native and Kendall resident, is the co-founder/cochair of RollBackTolls.com, a grassroots watch-dog group formed in 2010 to inform the general toll paying commuters of Miami-Dade about MDX (Miami-Dade Expressway Authority) and FDOT (Florida Dept. of Transportation). Miami Plastic Surgery’s Dr. Johnny Franco hits the ground running BY JESSE SCHECKNER

Miami Plastic Surgery has added a new member to the staff of highly-trained surgeons. Just this August, Dr. Johnny Franco accepted a fellowship with the worldfamous group, bringing with him 14 years of education and a respectable body of field experience. His first term of post-graduate work was as chief resident at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine where he spent five years honing his craft and further learning the value of sacrifice and discipline necessary for any professional in the medical field. “As a sports fan, I compare residency to training camp for football season,” says Dr. Franco. “It is where you learn and practice everything that you are going to do over your career to the point where it is automatic.” Following his residency he took his skills overseas to Taiwan and Belgium. Each stay lasted only a month, but the experiences he gained in each country were invaluable. In Taiwan, he honed his microsurgical skills

for head and neck reconstruction, while in Belgium he participated in cutting-edge breast reconstruction techniques. “It was refreshing to see how highly regarded American-trained physicians are in both of these countries,” he says. “It really made me appreciate the system we have here, along with the training and subsequent care it leads to for our patients here in the United States.” With its gorgeous weather, endless beaches and beautiful people, Miami was the perfect destination professionally for Dr. Franco when he returned stateside. His move to the unofficial capital of the sunshine state was made all the more worthwhile by his acceptance into the ranks of the renowned and respected Miami Plastic Surgery. “One of the great things about Miami is that people here generally take care of themselves and stay in great shape, which makes my job easier,” he says. “The one thing that doesn’t is the excessive amounts of sun people tend to get without sunscreen.” Not simply content to be a role player in

his new position, Dr. Franco helped publicize Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day on Oct. 17. The initiative, started by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, was meant to raise awareness about a woman’s options for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. “Over 70 percent of women today are not aware that breast reconstruction is available to them after a mastectomy from breast cancer, even though a federal act in 1998 required insurance companies to pay,” he says. “Women should have the choice and this initiative is aimed at informing them so they can make the decision.” Women who may be worried that they waited too long may be in for some good news. According to Dr. Franco it is never too late. Women who underwent a breast removal 10 years ago are still eligible for reconstruction.

Don’t take this miserable season out on Ozzie Guillen BY PRESTON MICHELSON

The Marlins have been run in a cyclical managerial fashion for the past decade: hire, fire, repeat. It appears that incumbent manager Ozzie Guillen may be the next victim of the second step of that cycle, much before it was expected to occur. The Marlins’ 69-93 mark is the worst record that the team has logged since 1999. To assign blame to Guillen is absurd, considering the fact that they closed the season with a couple of players named “Velazquez” and “Gorkys” in their starting lineup. If a manager is not a colossal failure, burning everything in sight (see: Valentine, Bobby), then he truly does not make a substantive difference on the outcome of a season. Whether the skipper was Guillen, Edwin Rodriguez or Jack McKeon, the on-field result would have been more or less the same. Consider the fact that the Marlins do not have a first round draft pick from the last decade currently on a major league roster (with the exception of up-and-down Chris Volstad of the Chicago Cubs). This kind of draft-pick futility is so rare in the MLB, it is no surprise that the Marlins are in the position that they are. Sprinkle in the fact that Marlins brass pulled off, all exaggeration aside, potentially the worst trade in baseball history. They shipped off a future hall-offame candidate and a Triple Crown winner in Miguel Cabrera, and in return they acquired some fizzled-out prospects and a catcher named “Rabelo.” The assertion that the heads of Marlins baseball operation, Mike Hill and Larry Beinfest, may retain their positions is ludicrous. The standards that owner Jeffrey Loria holds his general managers up to is completely incongruous to the standards that he holds on-field managers up to. How can Hill and Beinfest be excused for such poor performance over a decade’s time, while Guillen is potentially given the axe over a

CORNER

let-down in a year’s time? What makes the situation more illogical is the fact that Guillen does not even have direct influence on what occurs from play-to-play and gameto-game. Jeffrey Loria has received a well-deserved reputation of “killing” managers off. Two managers-of-the-year were fired, seemingly without cause. Since Loria bought the team in 2002, he has employed eight different managers. In this same time span, the same decision makers, Beinfest and Hill, have been in place. This situation is simply dumbfounding, as have been many of the moves by the Marlins managerial team. Beinfest and Hill have been given enough leeway. This team needs new voices, new opinions. Not only should the managerial team be removed, but they should be replaced by outside forces, much like the Houston Astros have done by hiring former St. Louis Cardinals scouting director Jeff Luhnow to tear their team down and build it back up. And please, Jeffrey Loria, don’t take this out on poor Ozzie Guillen. He has not had any gross misconduct of this team. His players simply did not perform. His players, indeed, like him a great bit as he identifies more as a “players’ manager.” In order to salvage your reputation as an owner and a boss, give Guillen more than one year to institute his plan and to bring winning baseball to South Florida. It is tiring to watch the same cycle go on: hire, fire, repeat. Let’s see a situation play out. Don’t blame this on Guillen. Hormones — for KEEPS! BY SONIA MARTINEZ, RPH

The results of the Kronos Early Estrogen Prevention Study (KEEPS) were released at the 23rd annual meeting of the North American Menopause Society in October 2012. The conclusion: Bio-identical hormones (estradiol and micronized progesterone) - started soon after the start of menopause - improved depression, anxiety, and cognitive function in healthy women. But, perhaps most importantly, bio-identical hormones did this without posing any cardiovascular disease risk, and were shown to be superior to synthetic conjugated equine estrogens (CEE). CEE are the form of hormones that were used in the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), a large government-sponsored study which found an increased risk of breast cancer associated with CEE, leading many women and health care professionals to seek information on options such as bioidentical hormones.

Mercedes-Benz, Laureus bring Coach Across America to Miami BY LEE STEPHENS

Coach Across America (CCA) has come to Miami-Dade County, thanks to sponsorship by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and funding by Mercedes-Benz USA. Collaboration between Laureus USA and MBUSA will allow the training and placement of 24 CCA coaches in 12 Miami-Dade after-school sports programs benefitting 3,000 kids in 15 communities, including Hialeah, Liberty City, Little Havana, North Miami, Overtown, South Dade and South Miami Heights. Initially, coaches will be placed in programs at Quality United Education, Dade Lacrosse, Touching Miami with Love, Hope for Miami and Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation. “We believe in the transformational power of sport as a tool for social good,” said Laureus World Sports Academy chairman Dr. Edwin Moses in making the announcement recently in ceremonies at northwest Miami’s Gwenn Cherry Park. “It is important for an area such as Miami to have quality coaches serving these kids. They are mentors, community organizers and mediators, and investing in proper training and offering support for these coaches is vital to sports-based youth development, especially as youth violence and obesity escalate and school-based programs continue

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 12 percent of Miami-Dade County’s high school students attend daily physical education classes at school, much lower than the state rate of 44 percent. Community-based coaches can play a crucial role in developing character and keeping students engaged in constructive physical activities. A recent GAO report confirmed that despite the important role of coaches, quality coaches are in short supply. Proper coaching increases the chance of better grades, better behavior, healthier lives and longer life due to fitness activity. Laureus USA has selected Coach Across America as its delivery partner to supply more quality coaches in underserved areas. “The positive influence coaches can have on today’s underserved youth is undeniable,” said James Kallusky, director of CCA. “The Greater Miami Area is a brand new market for Coach Across America made possible by the generous support from both MercedesBenz USA and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA.”

Initiatives like this are essential in America to fill the gap.” On hand for the announcement was international professional golf star Gary Player who said the Miami announcement was part of a nationwide program that, with a $1.3 million national commitment from MBUSA to Laureus USA, focuses on training and placing 250 CCA coaches in sports-based youth development projects in underserved neighborhoods in five cities: Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Miami. Laureus USA is a charitable organization that supports projects across the U.S. to improve

the lives of youth through sports. “Mercedes-Benz USA and our dealer partners have a long tradition of supporting and giving back to our communities,” said Steve Cannon, president and CEO of MercedesBenz USA. “When you combine that with MBUSA’s extensive involvement in highprofile sports events, this is an undertaking that really makes sense for us and provides a real benefit to youth across the country.” Youth violence and childhood obesity are serious issues in South Florida. As recently as Sept. 8, three people were shot during a youth football game at the recently-reopened Gibson Park in Overtown. According to the

COUPON DAZE! BY ED THOMPSON

President, LOGOI Ministries My wife and “Groupon” have become good friends. And now, with places like Amazon and Living Social vying for her online coupon attention, we are happily buying $30 worth of food for $15 at various restaurants. And while I’ve never been one to “clip coupons,” I am rather fond of eating. I’m happy to say this modern arrangement is helping keep both my belly and wallet full. It seems to me, however, that many restaurant employees are in a coupon daze. Just the other night, for example, my wife ordered take-out from a nearby Groupon friendly restaurant. As a savvy coupon shopper, she scanned the coupon carefully to see if there were any restrictions. Finding none, she sent me off to collect our meal. So, with coupon in hand, I cheerfully walked into the restaurant pleased to see our order waiting on the counter. “I’m sorry sir,” the friendly cashier responded as I handed her the $30 coupon we had purchased for $15, “but this is good only for eating in the restaurant.” I responded with a pleasant, “Nuh-uhh.” A bit caught off guard by my eloquent reply, she started to hand me back the coupon when I added, “There are no restrictions on this coupon.” She pulled it back and slowly read it over. She seemed a bit confused, but once again shook her head saying, “But we only accept coupons for eating in.” Without altering the pleasant smile still on my face I responded, “Well then I suppose I need to talk with the manager.” She gave me an awkward look which clearly meant, “The manager is the one who told me the coupon rule, you knucklehead,” but went to fetch the manager anyway. I couldn’t help but consider how our nicely discounted meal was cooling on the counter. A minute or two later, the pleasant cashier returned with a confused look on her face. “The manager is sleeping,” she said, “and I don’t want to wake him.” With those magic words, a LOL snort

THAT’S LIFE escaped my lips before I could catch it. “We’ll I guess we’re right back where we started,” I said pointing to the once hot meal which would now require microwaves to reheat. She looked over the coupon once again, let out a long sigh, and rang up the order. It came to an even $26. “I’m sorry sir,” she said looking at me, “but you need to buy $30 of food for this coupon.” I must admit that I was now rather enjoying this bit of free entertainment. “And why is that?” I replied bemused. She looked at me confused and said, “Because the coupon is for $30.” Another snort escaped. “Well, here’s what I was thinking,” I said to the nice young lady, “I’ll give you this $30 coupon which, in this instance, is the same as giving you $30 in cash. Then, I’ll take the $26 dollars worth of food we bought and go home. You can keep the $4 left over for your tip.” I let my suggestion sink in for a moment hoping it would take root, but had no such luck. “I’m sorry sir,” she said looking as if she was reconsidering waking up the manager, but you have to order $30 worth of food.” I countered, “So, let me get this straight, you’d rather have me buy more food instead of getting a $4 tip just for reaching over the counter and handing me my cold dinner?” Once again, she took a moment to mull this over making me wonder if her elevator was going all the way to the top. “Yes, I guess so,” she said unconvincingly. “Sold!,” I said with a hungry smile. “What have you got for $4?” Her countenance seemed to brighten as she suggested a fine sounding appetizer. Several minutes later, as our food was being reheated in the microwave, I recounted my coupon experience to my wife. “So did she get a tip?” she asked feeling a bit sorry for the cashier. “I hope so,” I answered. “I sure hope so.” Ed Thompson is President of LOGOI Ministries. So long, Leonard, you really were the King of Coconut Grove BY RON BEASLEY They came from far and wide to celebrate the life of Leonard King. They gathered at Scotty’s Landing, a locals dining place on the shore of Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove. There were faces from decades past, many not seen in the Grove for years and many more from very recent times, people who were befriended by Leonard over the years. Ron and Josie Higgins were there, and Dave Hill and Joel Krieger and John Lawrence and Don and Kathy Kesler and so many, many more. In fact, more than 150 folks packed into Scotty’s to remember Leonard by drinking a beer or two, swap stories and listen to Keven Hurley sing and play his guitar. Lenny would have been proud that so many turned out to remember him. He would have smiled that impish grin and said, “I told you so.” I knew Leonard King for about 40 years. I don’t know when he got the title of the King of Coconut Grove; it was a name that just seemed to fit him and he wore it with a smile. Leonard was a true original – Grove res-

ident, artist, filmmaker, friend to many, a man who was always ready to lend a hand, ready to be your friend. Ellie Brecher in her obituary story in the Miami Herald said Leonard was among the last of the Grove’s 1960s-era bohemian artists. I suppose he was that, for sure. He always like to tell people that he was close friends with the celebrated Grove artist Tony Scornavaca and that he was part of

the gang of artists that created the original Coconut Grove Art Festival that has morphed into the giant spectacle that it is today. Leonard certainly was an original, the very fact that he is credited with founding the Royal Blowgun Society at the old Taurus Restaurant on Main Highway in the Grove is one testament to that. The fact that he considered himself “an artist for the 21st Century” is another. In line with that, one of Leonard’s biggest claims to a legacy is his invention of what he called “the variable form abstract image reflector” in 1972. The idea was to use warped, concave mirrors to create abstract images that interact with the viewer as he moves in front of it. He called it optic-kinetic art and some of his pieces are in the permanent art collections at Miami Beach City Hall, the New England Center for Contemporary Art and (his favorite) the Kiev Modern Art Museum in the Ukraine. Another piece — Chaos in Altered Space created from trash left by Hurricane Andrew — was displayed for the better part of a year at Miami Metrozoo back in the 1990s. Leonard King died quite suddenly of

FPL CORNER Fight Higher Taxes on Investment Income

By Lew Hay, Executive Chairman of NextEra Energy, Inc. The fiscal cliff is rapidly approaching for America’s seniors and millions of taxpayers across the nation. Congress adjourned [last week] without preventing the multiple tax increases scheduled for January 1, and without ending the uncertainty over fiscal policy that represents unnecessary additional risk for private investment. Unless Congress acts immediately after the November election during a “lame duck” session, the crippling effects of Washington’s procrastination will be felt across our entire economy. Floridians should be especially concerned about one particular tax increase that will fall disproportionately on seniors. Beginning next year, tax rates will soar on investment income from capital gains and dividends. The top tax rate on capital gains will jump from 15 to 23.8 percent and the top rate on dividends will nearly triple from 15 to 43.4 percent. Millions of seniors would feel the pain of these higher rates immediately. Given the low rates on interest-bearing investments such as certificates of deposit, many older investors have turned to dividend-paying stocks to supplement their income. And those dividend distributions have been growing. According to a J.P. Morgan study, total dividend distributions jumped from $340 billion in 2008 to about $680 billion in 2011. Higher tax rates will change the equation for everyone. Dividend-paying companies could reduce the size of their quarterly dividend checks, which would devastate those relying directly on dividend income to help pay their bills. And if major investors shift their portfolios away from dividend-paying companies to assets with lower tax penalties, including those in other nations, every American with a retirement plan or mutual fund invested in U.S. dividend-paying stocks could take a hit as well. Higher taxes on private investment would not only reduce returns for investors, but also make it more difficult for many companies to create jobs and increase the value we deliver to our customers. At NextEra Energy, Inc., under current tax policy, we’ve been able to raise the capital necessary to invest billions of dollars in our infrastructure over the last several years. These investments in infrastructure deliver major benefits for our customers. At Florida Power & Light Company, our investments help keep reliability high and bills low over the long term. At NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, our investments help bring the benefits of renewable energy to customers in more than 20 states. Our company now employs about 10,000 people in Florida alone, and our ability to attract capital by paying dividends to our shareholders has been a major catalyst for our growth. Discouraging investment in dividend-paying companies like NextEra Energy will impact many vital sectors of the economy – such as manufacturing, utilities, and telecommunications – that are creating jobs across the nation. Reducing the capital these sectors can raise in equity markets will force them to increase their debt financing. This, in turn, will lead to an even riskier economy with even more overleveraged companies. The good news is that Congress still has time to act, and we still have the opportunity to make our voices heard. NextEra Energy has joined with other companies across our industry and across the nation to encourage more people to send our leaders a clear message: now is not the time to reduce dividend income through higher taxes and punish Americans who invest in our nation’s future. Everyone who wants to help can join our advocacy campaign, Defend My Dividend at www.DefendMyDividend.org. Together we can stop tax increases on all investors, including millions of seniors, as well as prevent further barriers to job creation and economic growth. Keeping tax rates low will be good for American businesses, good for our economy, and good for all investors.

2013 Mercedes SL marks 60 years of excellence Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS I don’t think there’s a car buff alive that does not love the Mercedes Benz SL, and the 2013 version has only served to generate more fans and an even greater appreciation of this beautiful automobile. This sixth generation SL is about two inches longer and wider, and its aluminum frame is about 275 pounds lighter than the previous model; most of the body panels are also aluminum, and high-strength steel is used in the roof pillars. Overall, the new SL body is about 20 percent stiffer than the car it replaces. For a bit of history, this model marks the 60th anniversary of the iconic coupe/roadster and the SL designation initially was intended as an abbreviation for the words “super” and “light.” The name “SL” evolved to become the best-known model in the Mercedes-Benz line. The first-ever SL in 1952 was a racecar, with an innova-

tive tubular space frame, a teardrop-shaped aluminum body and “gullwing” doors. It won both Le Mans and the famed Carrera Panamericana that year and the 300SL was a racing sensation that launched the revolutionary production sports car. The 2013 version of the SL550 is powered by an amazingly efficient and refined new V8 engine that gets up to 14 percent better fuel economy while producing even more power, thanks to such innovative technology as direct fuel injection, twin turbochargers and a multi-spark ignition. The new 4.6-liter engine has a 20 percent smaller displacement, but generates more horsepower and torque — 429 hp and 516 pounds-feet of torque. Its smaller displacement is more than offset by the power boost of twin turbochargers and an air-water intercooler. The new SL550 engine comes with an innovative ECO stop-start system. When the car stops and you step on the brake pedal, the engine turns off automatically to save fuel. As soon as you take your foot off the brake and step on the accelerator, the engine computer selects the piston that is in the best position for first ignition, and the direct fuel injection and multi-spark systems work with a starter motor to seamless-

ly re-start the engine. Aside from the powerplant, this SL is simply loaded with the latest in automotive technology. Such things as a retractable hardtop on the roadster and a standard Panorama sunroof on the coupe, with a seethrough polycarbonate roof panel. The optional Magic Sky Control has a glass roof panel and the tinting is controlled by the driver or passenger. A button above the rear-view mirror lets you change the tint from transparent to heavily tinted, using technology similar to automatic dimming mirrors.

There also is a myriad electronic safety systems and crash avoidance systems on the SL, including Attention Assist, Distronic Plus, Pre-Safe Brake and ESP stability control, as well as Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. Base price on the 2013 Mercedes Benz 550SL is $105,000. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers.
