inecrest said goodbye to its retiring police chief and three other ranking department officials on March 1 with a gala retirement party and dinner at Pinecrest Gardens. At the same time, outgoing police chief John Hohensee named veteran police officer Pete Skumanich to the new position of deputy police chief, the second in command in the Pinecrest Police Department. Skumanich will serve as interim chief when Hohensee officially departs on April 6 and hold that position until a new head of the department is appointed and assumes command. During the retirement ceremony, Hohensee also promoted two officers to the new post of lieutenants in the department. Jason Cohen was named support services lieutenant and Derek Bowman was appointed administrative lieutenant. Both will serve alongside operations lieutenant Sam Ceballos. Hohensee also awarded retirement badges and commendations to three veteran officers, including Commander Mike Liotti, who was one of the first police officers hired for the Pinecrest police force. DANIEL PAZ Palmer Trinity senior Daniel Paz is excited about Model United Nations, a new club at the school that started just last year. Club members expected to participate in their first conference this semester. “A bunch of different schools come together and we have a mock United Nation debate,” Paz says. “Each one develops a topic. We meet, we get in a classroom, we have a topic they told us a week in advance and we research the topic.” Last year, they did mock debates at school choosing high interest topics such as Should Gay Marriage Be Legal? and The Death Penalty, Should We Reinstate It in Florida? “It’s interesting because you don’t get to pick which side you’re on,” Paz says. If there are any Model UN issues coming up that deal with Japan, Paz will be happy. He’s a member of the Japan Club and visited Japan with Palmer Trinity classmates two years ago. “We went there for 10 days,” he says. “We did a home stay where you stay with a Japanese family. It was for four days. We traveled around the country the other six days.” Although Palmer doesn’t have a Japanese class, Paz has an independent studies class that allows him to study the language with a teacher who lived in Japan. “It’s my favorite class,” Paz says. Being in the Japanese Club, he learns about Japanese culture. Club members were horrified by the devastation caused by last year’s earthquake and tsunami and they

set out to raise money to help the victims. “We had bake sales and we organized a Japanese fundraiser where you put a wish on a ribbon and tie it to a tree,” Paz says. It’s possible some of the wishes tied to the tree were for his friend Anthony Pietra, who was diagnosed with lymphoma. Because he wants to help Pietra and others with blood cancer, Paz is involved with the Team in Training, a group that runs 5k races to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. “The biggest event we have is the Tony Trot,” Paz says. “We’re doing it again this year on March 24. We try to get the whole school to come. We raised a lot of money last year and we’re going to try to raise a lot more this year.” Last year, everyone in the junior class turned out for the event, including Pietra, who actually ran and completed the race. Raising money for cancer research is only part of Paz’s community involvement. He also earned hours working as a counselor in training at the University of Miami Aquatics camp, the camp he attended as a child. “I loved it, that’s why I came back,” he says. Paz has also participated in Hands On Miami events, including helping landscape a school in Homestead. These days, he attends events put on by Students Offering Support, although he’s not an official member. “I have friends who are a part of it and if you go to their events, they give you hours,” he says. “I’ve been to two of their Bowling Against Bullying events.” When Paz goes to college, he plans to study physics. “My grandpa — he passed away when I was young — was a physicist in Cuba,” he says. “My dad is a computer engineer for Beckman Coulter. When I took physics here, the class was very easy for me. Finding out the way things work is very interesting to me and that’s what physics is all about.” By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

SANTIAGO MALDONADO Santiago Maldonado is regarded as a leader and mentor to many students at Westminster Christian School, as well as children in the community. For his stewardship in school and community organizations, he was nominated for the prestigious Silver Knight Award in the category of Speech. He also was the recipient of Westminster’s Warrior Award, which was presented by the school’s faculty in recognition of his outstanding leadership and attitude. Maldonado, a senior, served as Student Council president during his junior year and currently serves as president of the executive board. “It is my duty to manage the four Student Council boards and the executive board and keep these student leaders focused and on task,” he said. “In this position, I was also responsible for leading the committee that organized the school’s successful homecoming dance.” Maldonado has been swimming since he was three years old and is a member of the Westminster Warriors swim team coached by Lou Manganiello. Volunteering as a swim coach at AquaKids Sharks Summer

Camp held at Westminster’s pool each summer has been a natural progression. “I created games, organized the playrooms and worked hard to help the children enjoy swimming and learn the fundamentals,” said Maldonado. “Swimming builds character.” Maldonado has also volunteered at two local animal clinics helping to care for the animals and keep the facilities clean. He revealed that the most rewarding volunteer work he does is when he works with children. He said he gains just as much from them as they do from him, and quoted Confucius to describe his philosophy: “If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of 10 years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people.” When Maldonado is not swimming, he is running. He’s a member of the school track and field team and specializes in distance races such as the 800-meter and field events like the long jump. He is an active member of the Science Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Writer’s Guild. Maldonado’s heavy load of AP classes combined with his love of helping others have properly prepared him for his future. His goal is to study psychology and become a psychologist or family therapist, while continuing his work with helping and guiding children. He has applied to 15 schools in Florida and throughout the country, including the University of Miami, Florida, Yale, Duke, Penn State and Boston College. As the acceptance letters pour in, he will continue to narrow his selection and make a final college choice later in the spring. Whether volunteering in the community or leading the efforts of a school organization, Maldonado finds the roles of leader, mentor and role model to be very rewarding. On the Westminster campus, he goes out of his way reach out to younger students, guide them and encourage them to be active members of the school. In return, he says he is viewed by his peers as a “big brother.” By Nancy Eagleton

KAITLYN SHELTON To say that Kaitlyn Shelton is a wellrounded student and citizen is a bit of an understatement. The Westminster Christian School senior is an academic scholar,

orchestra member, swimmer, passionate volunteer and leader. When Shelton graduates this year, she will have completed nine AP classes. To help prepare her for a future in medicine, she doubled up on science classes in her junior year and math classes during her senior year. She has applied to 13 schools and so far has been accepted by 11, including Florida State University, the University of Miami, University of Central Florida, Stetson, Florida Gulf Coast and the University of North Florida. “I like to push myself and be challenged academically,” Shelton said. “I am able to handle a busy schedule and be successful, thanks in part to wonderful teachers who have helped guide and inspire me.” Shelton has attended Westminster since she was three years old. She joined the orchestra when she was in the fourth grade, discovered she loved it and has been passionately playing the violin ever since. In sixth grade, Shelton began swimming competitively. She swims for the AquaKids Sharks team as well as the Westminster

Warriors swim team, both coached by Lou Manganiello. She’s lettered in her sport all four years and this year serves as varsity team captain. “I enjoy the practices and the special bond that I’ve formed with my teammates,” said Shelton. She has earned more than 300 community service hours and is still counting. As the community service coordinator for National Honor Society at Westminster, she coordinates various community service projects for the club’s 80 members. The group has assisted the Westminster staff with the school’s annual showcases, which inform perspective parents and students about the school. She and her classmates have volunteered for Habitat for Humanity to help build homes for families in need, served meals to the homeless at Camillus House and assisted at the Special Olympics. Shelton has teamed up with National Honor Society members on an especially heartwarming project. “We have made more than 100 baby blankets and presented them to families at Caring for Miami, Homestead Women’s

Center,” she said. During the past three summers, Shelton has volunteered as a swim coach at AquaKids Sharks Summer Camp, held at the Westminster pool. She helped teach children pool safety, proper stroke techniques and how to swim. Last summer, Shelton began volunteering with Child Life Specialists at Miami Children’s Hospital and continues to visit young patients each weekend. “I visit and entertain children who have undergone chemotherapy, surgery and other medical procedures,” she said. “These visits make the children happy and give the parents a small break.” As is evident in her volunteer efforts, Shelton is passionate about helping people. She plans to apply her skills and compassion to a career in healthcare. “My dream is to continue to serve my community by volunteering,” she said. “I want to become a registered nurse initially, and then earn a master’s degree to become a physician’s assistant so I can also serve people in my job.” By Nancy Eagleton

Estate Foundation have been working overtime to keep the festival unique. “We’re really proud of the reputation that we have created and believe that quality of food served combined with on-going live entertainment are the keys to our success,” said festival chairman Eric Haas. “To keep everyone happy, we have extended the hours and are opening the gate at 10 a.m. this year.” At the entrance, guests are greeted by the sounds of steel drums and the towering Virgin Island stilt walkers. Once inside the gate there are activities for every age. To fully experience the Deering Seafood Festival, plan to spend the day. There are pontoon boat rides aboard the Pelican Skipper to Chicken Key, an Artists’ Village featuring paintings, photography, crafts and jewelry by local artists, nature hikes and historic house tours. On the main stage, the entertainment lineup includes the Pan Paradise Steel Band and Caribbean Crew, each performing their reggae/calypso sound, followed by Mr. Nice Guy. Adding to the island theme are the ever popular, free-spirited Bahamian Junkanoo musicians who playfully dance throughout the crowd.

Local celebrity chefs Giorgio Rapicavoli, Miami’s first winner of the TV Food Network’s show Chopped (Eating House), Simon Stowjanovic (Altamare), Chris Visger, Chef de Cuisine at Islamorada’s Green Turtle Inn and Kareen Anguin (Oceanaire Seafood Room) prepare their specialties at cooking demonstrations under the big top tent, presented by Whole Foods Market Coral Gables. During the food samplings, recipes are shared while the chefs hold an informal Q&A. This year the student winner of Johnson & Wales University’s Seafood Competition recreates the award-winning recipe at the festival. Throughout the day, fellow culinary students assist the chefs in food preparation. Also, a sommelier from Crown Wine & Spirits discusses wine pairings and offers tastings following each cooking demonstration. A one-day seafood emporium is created bringing together restaurants and caterers such as Golden Rule Seafood Market, Whole Foods Market, Eating House, Green Turtle Inn, Black Point Ocean Grill, Imlee Indian Bistro, Shibui Japanese Restaurant, Iggy’s Street Wok, Rodbender’s and Paella

Party who prepare shrimp, lobster, oysters, conch, fish and crab in a variety of ways. For land lovers, Sports Grill is on hand with their famous wings and burgers. In the Lil’ Shrimp Kids Zone, the Deering Estate’s Educational and Interpretive Staff has created a hands-on adventure called the Deering Discovery Cove, where this year kids explore the five oceans of the world. The Kids Zone also offers unlimited fun on inflatables and

serves kid-friendly food. The Deering Estate at Cutler is a Miami-Dade County park, located at 16701 SW 72 Ave. Online advance admission is $15 for adults and $25 at the gate; admission for children 4-14 years old is $5; and Deering Foundation members are admitted free. Advice for getting through a divorce BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

My daughter comes home from her dad’s wearing makeup and clothes that my ex-husband’s live-in gives her. They are clearly not age appropriate. I have tried talking to both of them, but they are smug and tell me they will do what they wish “on their watch.” Just a wild guess here, but I would bet you felt like jumping through the phone and strangling them? No doubt this is tough. You feel walked over as a mother by the live-in, feel powerless with your ex and the bad guy with your daughter. Have no fear, your inner strength is here! Simply put, you are going to take back the power. Send an email to your ex in a very professional way outlining why you feel these are inappropriate (this is for documentation purposes). After that, no need to say another word. When your daughter comes home dressed that way, calmly explain to her that you understand how she might find the make up and clothes “cool”, but that it is not age appropriate. Again, you understand she is allowed to wear them at her dad’s, but not here. Ask her to change and tone down the make up. Don’t bad mouth the dad or the live in, just be matter-of-fact. Don’t get into a dis-

What can I do to stop my ex-husband from telling lies about me to anyone who will listen? I’m losing friends left and right. All I can say is that they weren’t really your friends. Those that know you will know to turn a deaf ear. Shakespeare was a wise man when he said, “The lady doth protest too much!” Don’t lose your credibility by defending yourself. Spend that time making new friends. An attorney friend of mine told me once that the friends you make after your divorce are the friends that you will have for a long time. I hope you find comfort in that.

cussion with her, as this is not up for debate. You might not be able to control what goes on at his house, but you certainly can take back the power in your home. I have also known a time or two when the clothes goblins come at night and whisk those clothes to the netherworld, never to be seen again.

When my children come back from their dad’s, all I hear about is the girlfriend and what fun they had. I’m sick of hearing it. What can I say to them without sounding bitter? I will assume they are “filling you in”, not to be mean. That assumption in place, understand that they are viewing this as sharing with you. As painful as it might be, you want to keep open communication with them. Try steering the conversation in the direction you would like it to go. When you feel enough time has passed, perhaps guide them to do homework or get settled in. Let me acknowledge your feelings here for a minute. I know it’s really hard to have your children gone, only to come home and extol how great the weekend at dads was, especially if you have spent your weekend organizing closets with your cat. So, let me leave you with this thought. Would you rather have your children spending an entire weekend where they are unhappy? The depth of a mother’s love knows no bounds, even when it adds to her own unhappiness. Debbie Martinez is a Certified Divorce Life Coach. Hohensee reminisced about his 12-and-ahalf years with the Pinecrest Police Department and noted that he was proud of his work and with the progress made in building a quality law enforcement agency. “When I arrived in 1999, we were still working out of rented facilities that were woefully inadequate,” said Hohensee. “So the design and move into the state-of-the-art facility we have today is one of many highlights of my tenure. The improvement in

both the number of sworn personnel and the caliber of the people we were hiring increased dramatically, and our relationship with the community improved significantly during that period. “And, of course, our achievement of accreditation, both international and state, and the crowning jewel of accreditation, our designation as the flagship agency the last time we were reaccredited, is another highlight.” Hohensee, who plans to move to North

I’ve had wonderful support from our Village officials, both elected and appointed, and the

It truly is the pinnacle of my career. “I will walk out the door with a great sense of satisfaction, proud of what we accomplished and with the comfort of knowing that the men and women of this department will carry on without me and do the same fine job that they have done under my leadership. Village student Kent Trespalacios meets President Obama BY RAQUEL GARCIA

Kent Trespalacios is a 13-year-old Palmetto Middle School student born and raised in Pinecrest who enjoys playing video games with friends after school, helping his teacher grade papers for community service civics projects and debating politics with his dad. Although his father Jose is a Republican and Kent sides with the Democrats, when the chance came up to visit President Barack Obama on his recent visit to Miami, the whole family supported the mission. Kent and mother Krista had the opportunity to meet President Obama at a Biltmore Hotel luncheon following Obama’s visit to the University of Miami. Not only did he get a big hug from the president, he also received an autographed note complete with embossed presidential seal and the notation to “dream big dreams, Kent.” “We were standing there and I was like ‘Oh my God, it’s the president! I’m finally going to meet him,’” said Kent. “I was beside myself; I couldn’t believe it and I started tearing up and he came up to me and he said, ‘It’s okay, buddy’ and asked me my name and gave me a big hug and shook my hand.” To hear Kent speak about President Obama is like listening to a youthful George Stephanopoulos in his early days on the campaign trail for President Clinton. He is an articulate spokesman for the Commander in Chief. “I look up to President Obama because I see him as a role model,” he said. “He is a kind person, not like the rest of the politicians. He was raised by his grandparents after his father left for Kenya and then he began to community organize. Bush left a huge crisis and Obama is set to fix it; people may think he is doing a terrible job, but he’s accomplished a lot in three years.” Wearing his best suit and tie in the Biltmore Hotel ballroom, the Trespalacios mother-and-son team dined on salad, chicken and pasta and apple pie while chatting

with fellow Obama supporters about the Republican primary circus. “We met two nice older people and we were discussing issues and my mom got the lady a drink,” said Kent. “Her name was Edi and she was saying how she couldn’t watch the Republican debates on TV because she just can’t take it anymore. Lunch was first and then we waited for Obama. The program started with Senator Bill Nelson and then Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz introduced the president.” Getting a chance to receive a hug and a note from President Obama did not just happen. An industrious and quick thinking Kent got to work on how to receive a personal introduction. “I was trying to figure out the fastest way to get to where he was standing, so I turned around and squeezed in among the crowd and asked a Secret Service agent if I could walk up and shake his hand and he said yes.” Kent has his future sights set on inheriting President Obama’s job. “I would like to run for president when I am older,” he said. “I debate my dad all the

time and he has different views then I do. I also debate with my abuelo because he is a Republican, too. As President I would create more jobs because unemployment is too high and I would eliminate the wars because they are costing money and we need to lower our debt.” Kent’s dad paid for the tickets to the lunch-

eon as an early birthday gift for his son. The entire family was overjoyed when Kent called them after his presidential rendezvous. “I called all my family members right after I met him; my grandma and grandpa started crying because they were so happy for me. I told my teachers and everyone at school. It was a great experience.”

Wonderful exposure for your home Wendy and Adam Levy REAL ESTATE There is much debate among real estate professionals about the importance and value of holding an Open House. Some say that these events help get the house sold. Other agents say it is an outdated practice due to the digital age of virtual tours. However, it has been estimated that more than half of all buyers who attend Open House events learned about them on the Internet. They look at the pictures and the virtual tour and then visit the property. With all the time and money that an agent puts into marketing your home, an Open House puts those very buyers inside your home and in front of your agent. One of the best aspects of the Open House is the feedback that the visitors provide, feedback

that can suggest you change your approach or make any needed improvements. Aside from interest generated by the Web, the signs your agent places may also attract curious passersby. While they may not be making a purchase for themselves, they may know someone who is, and is looking for a home in your neighborhood. An Open House also helps to create a sense of urgency among those who visit, especially when they see that other buyers are showing interest in the home. It is obvious that a successful Open House exposes your property to a broad base of buyers. Even if only a few people visit and one places an offer, it was clearly worth it. Keep in mind that not all homes are ideal candidates for this type of marketing, so ask your agent about the many possibilities. Curious George interactive exhibit coming to JCC Linda K. Landy ALPER JCC NEWS When I first learned how to read in elementary school, our teacher took us to the school library once a week to choose our own book. I have vivid memories of eagerly hunting for the next book in the Curious George series. I searched for the bright yellow books with George on the cover and often took them home to read to my younger brothers and sisters. I enjoyed them all over again reading to my children, and I hope to one day read them to my grandchildren. Curious George, first published in 1941, recounts the adventures of a mischievous brown monkey named George and his friendship with The Man with the Yellow Hat (always seen wearing a bright yellow suit and a wide-brimmed yellow hat). In subsequent volumes Curious George Takes a Job (1947), Rides a Bike (1952), Gets a Medal (1957), Flies a Kite (1958), Learns the Alphabet (1963) and Goes to the

Hospital (1966). Since then, there have been countless films, television shows, books, games, toys and more that have made George one of the most beloved and recognizable characters in children’s literature. A wonderful interactive children’s exhibit based on the timeless Curious George stories, is coming to the JCC on Mar. 25. Curious George: Let’s Get Curious! is designed to peak the curiosity of children age three through seven as they explore familiar buildings and locales from the well-loved Curious George book series

and television show on PBS KIDS. Although the kids will think they are just having fun, they will be delving into art and design and learning key concepts in science, math and engineering which are woven and layered throughout the exhibit. Activities invite visitors to learn, like George, through direct experience and problem solving. Visitors are transported to the neighborhood where Curious George lives with The Man with the Yellow Hat. Activities have multi-generational appeal and include an apartment building, sidewalk produce stand, construction site, park, mini golf area, rocket, farm and museum retrospective. Text graphics are in English and Spanish. A display of Margaret (author) and H. A. (illustrator) Rey artwork demonstrates how they created the Curious George books. Museum within the Museum starts with the Reys’ escape from France during World War II that saved the Curious George manuscript and follows Curious George throughout the years. The exhibit is open Sundays from Mar. 25 to Jun. 3 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Alper JCC Lisa Ann Watson Discovery Children’s Museum. (It will be closed Apr. 8 for Passover and May 27 for Shavuot.)

Opening Day Mar. 25 will include a FunkeyMonkeys! family concert at 3 p.m. Created by the composer for Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer, FunkeyMonkeys! is a group of innovative musicians and comedians who produce eclectic shows for kids and parents. “Think Seinfeld meets the Wiggles or The Muppets performing Free to Be,” explains the group’s website. On Sunday, Apr. 15, from 12 to 2 p.m. Zoo Miami will be there with live. There will also be Drop-in Funday activities from 1 to 2 p.m.: Apr. 1 build a banana split; Apr. 22 build with recycled materials; Apr. 29 build with K’nex; May 6 build with mini-marshmallows and toothpicks; May 13 (Mother’s Day) create a Mother’s Day card using recycled materials and May 20 create a masterpiece using recycled materials. During the exhibit, the J is offering twohour Curious George-themed birthday parties. Just bring kids. The J takes care of the rest. The reasonably priced package includes an exhibit tour, pizza, birthday cake, decorations, private room, party coordinator, two counselors, set-up and clean-up. Danny Berry’s JCC Baseball has added Little League play to the line-up BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

Red Berry’s Baseball World will shut down at the end of the month and parents are looking for a new place for their kids to play ball. Danny Berry is hoping they look in his direction. “I have been getting calls from people who were at his facility,” says Berry, of Danny Berry’s JCC Baseball based at the Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center. Berry has been based at the J for almost 20 years and earlier he worked with Red Berry for nine years. He recently wrote a letter to Red congratulating him on his career. “We both have the same philosophy about baseball,” he says. Berry says he can handle an influx of children who are seeking a new baseball league now that Baseball World is closing. “I can take in more, I’d basically spread them out throughout the week,” he says. “My goal is to get 500.” In fact, the timing of the end of Red Berry’s program and the start of Danny Berry’s next one is almost perfect. “His season runs until the end of March,” Danny Berry says. “My next program starts at the end of April.” That’s when he starts his Little League season and his Intro to Baseball program for three and four year olds. Berry says he and Red Berry run similar type programs that involve parents, but leave the teams to be coached by guys who played baseball in college or the minor leagues. He makes sure they coach positively and encourage the young players, rather than simply yelling at them when they make a mistake. His program has always been respected and now he has added an official Little League program as well. “I do have parents coaching in my Little League,” he says.

Danny Berry hopes to attract Red Berry Baseball World families to his facil(Photo by Eric Ellington) ities at the J. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

“But I’m here all the time. My job as president of the league is to make sure the parents are talking to the kids, not yelling and screaming at them.”

Berry believes that playing baseball should be fun for youngsters and free from the pressure that they will find in high school or college ball. “It should be the best time of their lives right now,” Berry says. “It builds their self esteem and it rubs off on other things at school. A coach is like a hero to the kids for six months.” Berry says being in a good baseball program can build character and teach good sportsmanship. “We make it a no-pressure, fun environment for the kids,” he says. That’s one of the reasons he brought in Little League, because the philosophy meshes with his. Berry’s Little League team of 11 and 12 year olds made it to the state championship last year and just missed having a game televised. Even so, Berry is confident that he will have another strong team this year. “I think we’re going to have a pretty good team with the 11 and 12 year olds,” he says. “The nine and 10s have a good team, but they can only go as far as states.” Berry is a fan of the Little League system because he says it demands positive coaching. “You watch coaches in the World Series and don’t see the yelling and screaming,” he says. “Little League stresses the fun and the positive aspects of the game.” Danny Berry has an academy setting during the fall, with Little League starting April 30 and lasting six weeks, followed by summer camp. He also conducts an Intro to Baseball program for three and four year olds. His program accommodates children through age 12. New training classes at Line Drive Performance are a home run BY NANCY EAGLETON

Many student athletes in the area know Line Drive Performance as the place to go to train with famed Miami Stingrays coach Gator Rebhan. Now, many adults are discovering that Line Drive Performance is the place to go to achieve their fitness goals as well. Fitness trainer Matthew Valdes recently joined Line Drive Performance, located in The Falls warehouse district at 13080 SW 85 Ave. Rd., and is leading hour-long cross-training classes Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 12 noon. The classes combine cardio and strength training and are perfect for both beginners and seasoned athletes. “I begin with a personal consultation to determine your goals and athleticism,” said Valdes. “Then, the fun begins.” Valdes, who graduated from Killian High School in 2005, applies the principals he’s learned over the years as an athlete and trainer to help people achieve maximum results. Whether you want to lose weight, improve health and wellness, get physically fit, fight aging, gain lean muscle mass or train for an endurance event, the key, he says, is muscle confusion. “It’s important to change your workout routine at least every two weeks,” said Valdes. “As

you exercise, the body acclimates to the workout and switches to auto pilot. If you don’t change your workout, you’ll hit a plateau and you won’t see further changes in your body.” Valdes refers to the classes as “personal training sessions at group class prices.” Depending on your fitness goals, sessions may include resistance training with a bungee and harness, strength training with weights and bands, and cardio with jump rope, medicine ball, jogging and sprint sessions, all in the comfort of an air-conditioned facility. “I might have four people in the session all doing different exercises to accomplish their personal goals,” said Valdes. Although adults are welcome to participate in the afternoon sessions from 3-8 p.m., this is when the area’s elite student athletes converge on Line Drive Performance to work on improving their game. The facility’s batting cages are filled with players and teams taking individual and group batting lessons. Valdes and Coach Rebhan work with athletes to improve their sports-specific abilities as well as overall strength, speed and agility. “We focus on developing the fast twitch muscle fibers to help these athletes with their explosive movements – those first few steps out of the box or off the line,” said Valdes.

Valdes also counsels student and adult athletes on the benefits of proper nutrition and supplementation and says that this triple threat – proper workouts, nutrition and supplementation – is a home run that produces leaner, faster and stronger bodies. Under the direction of Coach Rebhan, Line Drive Performance has helped produce some of the area’s top softball players, many of whom have gone on to play at Division 1 colleges. Current Stingrays players Dominique Grossman, a senior at Gulliver Prep, just committed to Georgia Southern University, and Kelsey Bogaards, a Palmetto High School senior, recently signed with Auburn University. “With Gator, the workouts are intense and no session is ever the same,” said Grossman. “He is tough, but he knows his stuff and makes you a better athlete. I’m definitely tougher, stronger and quicker.” “My goal is to see these kids get into Division 1 schools so they can continue to play ball and, most importantly, get a good education,” said Rebhan. Whether you’re an elite athlete wanting to take your skills to the next level or someone striving to improve your health and fitness, Line Drive Performance has a training program that will work for you.

On garage sales and the Relay For Life

Garage sales are cathartic. You free your home from built-up clutter and start anew. It is liberating, organizing and energizing and, as George Carlin once observed, it “makes room for you to go out and get more stuff!” On Feb. 25, the Mangowood Estates section of Palmetto Bay held its 34th annual garage sale. That morning, another home’s junk became someone else’s discounted treasure on a mass scale. Of the 288 homes in the Association, about 70 houses set up shop in their driveways and almost a thousand people arrived. One house sold me two barely used file cabinets. Another peddled a like-new gooseneck table lamp. Total cost for everything, six bucks! Besides being fun for the customers, it is a great community event. Any time you get residents to do things together, you accomplish great things. One longtime homeowner told me that he’s proud of Mangowood. He was president of the association when Hurricane Andrew struck. He recalled how within two days of the storm his neighbors had banded together and cleared all the streets of debris, making them single-lane passable. Few other areas accomplished this for weeks. Today was no hurricane, but Lisa and David Greenwell certainly organized a great community fundraiser. With several hundred patrons visiting their driveway each year, they decided to raise money for daughter Megan’s traveling softball team. The Miami Stingrays (a Flagami Khoury League team

for 14-16 year old girls) is a traveling showcase team. “We have a trip to NYC this July and we need to raise $15,000 to support that,” said Lisa. Pinecrest resident and Stingray catcher Kaitlyne Musa, 16, and her teammates were on hand to help sell. “I think we’ll make nearly $2,000 from this,” said Musa. “That will go a long way to getting to New York. I have a blast playing softball and traveling. This is a great way to have fun and raise some money.” Besides the garage sale, they plan to have a car wash in March and a golf tournament in May. So, when you’re ready to clean the garage and have your next yard sale, think about what community activity you can help fund. In Mangowood, this is second nature.

RELAY FOR LIFE — A LOCAL FAMILY’S STORY Sometimes bad things happen to good people. At this time last year, 12-year-old Dylan Samole’s baseball team was readying to participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event in Pinecrest. His father, Shane, was on a business trip for EB Excalibur, his electronic game, RC vehicle and executive gift manufacturing company. He bumped his side on the plane’s armrest and felt more pain than he should. A few days later he was diagnosed with stage one NonHodgkin’s Lymphoma and was quickly put under the knife. On the day of last year’s event, just a few weeks after his surgery, the Samole family was reeling from the effects of cancer. Still, Dylan, his sister Brooke, 15, and mother Susan participated in the Relay For Life event. Shane was too worn from his chemo to attend. It also happened to be the day that his hair fell out. “The concept of Relay For Life is that cancer never sleeps, so the event is 24 hours and requires that teams get formed so at least one person from each team is always walking the event circuit,” said Brooke. Shane’s father died of lung cancer in 2000, so the family had memories of what cancer could do. Brooke was overwhelmed with emotion during the 2011 Luminaria Ceremony. “I have only cried at one movie, but I teared up because of Luminaria,” she said. “The lit candles touched my emotions. My dad told me he wasn’t going to die, but it was still on my mind.” Sure, like any father, Shane tried to shield and protect his kids from the darkest thoughts he had about his cancer. “You’re not thinking a year in advance,” he said. “What you’re really thinking is, ‘That’s it; I’m done.’” “He was always strong,” said Brooke. “He never cried or felt sorry for himself.” As anyone would expect, behind the scenes

it did take a toll. Cancer is oddly both difficult and enriching at the same time. “In a weird way, I became more thankful for things,” said Brooke. “The family became closer and more understanding of each other because we had to rally around my Dad. My mom did the most. She not only took my dad to chemo treatments, but never missed a beat taking me and my brother to our events.” “During the bad chemo days, you feel helpless,” said Shane. “But you gotta move, you gotta try. I didn’t want to be a burden and to have my kids see me that way.” Shane and his family endured chemo and radiation sessions through July, 2011. By October, tests revealed he was in complete remission. “So God bless, it’s exciting that I’m alive and here today,” said Shane. Sometimes good things result from a journey. For Brooke, Shane, Susan and Dylan Samole, the 2012 Relay For Life was a poignant and moving time. Shane summed it up best. “Everyday you remind yourself, hey, you know what? I’m alive today. And you do things more personally, especially with my kids.”

CHABAD CENTER KENDALL / PINECREST

BY RABBI YOSSI HARLIG Director

More than 700 children, teens, parents, grandparents and supporters walked and gave with their hearts at the fourth annual Walking 4 Friendship fundraiser on Sunday, Feb. 12. The community came together on the campus of Chabad of Kendall/Pinecrest, 8700 SW 112 St., for the 3k walk and carnival that benefitted The Friendship Circle. It was amazing and rewarding to see the happy faces of the children and families whose lives are touched by the activities and programs of The Friendship Circle, and the many teenage volunteers who are the lifeblood of the program’s success. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to those who volunteered and walked at the event, and to those who sponsored and donated to this worthy cause. You made a difference in the lives of others and the impact is far-reaching. I would also like to thank Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen for joining us and for her continued support of The Friendship Circle program.

Page 25

Going the extra mile ‘Walking 4 Friendship’

The children with special needs and their families were overwhelmed with the outpouring of support. The community response validated the tireless efforts of the teens who so generously offer the gift of their time. Through their friendship, they are able to reach children with special needs in ways that most forms of therapy cannot. And finally, through email campaigns and team website pages, participants raised money that came from all over the country. These generous donations will continue to fuel more than 10 Friendship Circle programs that offer friendship and recreation to children with special needs. The money raised is crucial to continuing this empowering program and donations can be made throughout the year by contacting The Friendship Circle. At this year’s Walking 4 Friendship event, the feeling in the air was joyous, the food and entertainment were delightful, the smiles on the faces of the children with special needs priceless. Events like this bring out the best of the human spirit. It was evident to all who participated that life is richer, happier and more meaningful when you give of yourself to others. Golf Academy expansion to Palmetto Golf Course is a ‘hole-in-one’ BY CASSANDRA RAMJIT

South Miami-Dade County recently welcomed the Crandon Golf Academy’s expansion to the Palmetto Golf Course. The Academy, established in 2007 by PGA Professional Alex Fernandez, has been awarded a long-term contract to manage the Palmetto Golf Course. Accompanying the changeover is an exciting new roster of events, including a wide variety of programs and camps open to golfers of all ages and abilities. Whether you are looking to improve the quality of your play or a newcomer wishing to explore the sport, rest assured that you will find one of the many activities offered at Palmetto suitable to your golfing needs. From beginner’s lessons and group clinics to private instruction and oncourse playing lessons, you will find all of the tools necessary to develop a perfect swing on the fairway. There are numerous options for young golfers, including junior golf sessions available during after-school hours and weekends. Co-ed golf camps during the spring and summer breaks are offered and are a fun and interesting way for kids to learn the rules and etiquette of the game. At the same time, they get the chance to test their skills on the course, participate in contests and enjoy friendly interaction with their peers. These are just a few of the proven academy programs headed by PGA professionals that are being brought to Palmetto. The Crandon Golf Academy provides instruction to Key Biscayne residents and surrounding communities, as well

as many international clients, and is a contracted service provider for the parks and recreation division for the county. Now in charge at Palmetto are golf professionals Mike Ford and Scott Jones. Ford, the new director of instruction at Palmetto,

has more than 15 years of experience in the golf industry and graduated from the PGA program at Penn State University. Teaching for 13 years, he spent three-and-a-half years at Palmetto and the last two at Crandon. Ford serves as the varsity head golf coach for Palmer Trinity School and has managed the golf program for the past five years. His keen interest in the game and desire to share that passion with others led him to create a golf program for The Falls chapter of the YMCA. Jones is a PGA teaching professional and in 1992 began working at the Kendale Lakes Golf Club. He has spent his 20-year career working at public courses in Miami-Dade County with the aim to develop and coach junior talent. In 2001, he was the recipient of the southern chapter PGA Teacher of the Year award for his work with Cristie Kerr, currently playing on the LPGA Tour and with career earnings exceeding $13.5 million. “I developed my passion for golf during a one-day-aweek summer camp while I was a kid,” said Ford. “I would help out at the course, picking the driving range, washing carts and gradually working my way up to work in the pro shop. As an instructor, there was no better feeling than seeing the reaction of a student after the first solid golf swing, and that satisfaction was enough to help me decide to go to college for a degree in professional golf management.” So grab your clubs and head out to Palmetto to explore the possibilities that await you there. Adams Creative Images captures your special moments Kent Adams of Adams Creative Images will create a video that allows you to relive your special event over and over again.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video must be… priceless. For more than 25 years, Kent Adams of Adams Creative Images has been capturing the memories of South Florida families and creating video images that will last a lifetime. The Killian High School graduate joined the family-owned business started by his father, photographer Charles Adams, after graduating from Florida State University. A true testament to his work – Adams has been filming generations of families during some of their happiest moments – weddings, birthday and anniversary parties, bar and bat mitzvahs, baby showers, graduations and more. “I’ve watched families grow. I’ve filmed couples at their weddings and then years later, I’ve filmed the bat mitzvah, graduation, or wedding of their child,” said Adams. “I feel very lucky that so many families have chosen me to capture their special moments.” At homes, hotels, churches and temples, and on boats and cruise ships, Adams captures the natural flow of his clients’ events, allowing them to enjoy the magic of their day. With years of experience, he has mastered the art of being unobtrusive, yet being in the right place at the right time. “It’s important that I stay out of the way and in the background,” he said. “If the families

want interviews and comments from their guests included in the video, I can easily add that element.” Prior to the event, Adams consults with the couple or family to determine video style, theme and music. Whether the family wants the video to evoke tears or laughter, Adams’ imaginative video productions utilize state-ofthe-art editing and digital technology to deliver polished presentations. “The resulting DVD is a reflection of the couple’s or family’s personality and vision,” Adams added. “It can be watched over and over, so you never lose those perfect memories, and shared with those who could not attend the event.” To enhance the mood at wedding rehearsals, bar and bat mitzvahs, and retirement, graduation, birthday and anniversary parties, a popular trend is to show photo montages set to music. Using family photos, Adams creates a sophisticated and meaningful montage that tells the story of the couple or family member, leading up to the joyous occasion. Recognizing that every event varies in size, concept, theme and budget, Adams can create the perfect package for your family.

How to ‘get luckier’ BY PAT MORGAN

Happy St. Pat’s Day! It’s that time of year when we celebrate the “luck of the Irish” and the magic of spring. What a great time to think about how to be luckier in life and create more of what you want. Did you know there are things you can do to increase your odds for luck? Being lucky starts with your state of mind. Research has found that people who think they are lucky tend to have more luck in their life. They have a lucky mindset and think about possibilities rather than problems. As a result, they are more open and receptive to luck. Being prepared helps, too. A wise person once said, “Luck is where opportunity and preparedness meet.” Being ready for success when a door opens will empower you to step in and try something different. If you want more luck in reaching your goals, here’s a way to have a 95 percent chance of success. According to researchers at Brigham Young University, the probability of achieving a goal if: • You hear an idea is 10 percent.

• You hear an idea and set a deadline to reach it, odds go to 40 percent. • You hear an idea, set a deadline and outline a plan, you have a 50 percent chance for success. • You do all of the above, plus commit to someone else that you will accomplish your goal, your probability for success increases to 65 percent. • You do the above and set a specific accountability appointment with the person you have committed to, your chance for success skyrockets to 95 percent! List with the best! EWM sells a million dollar home every 36 hours! You can’t afford to list with anyone else!

Should you buy a short sale? or Shoot yourself in the foot. It might feel the same at times. So here is what you should expect in a short sale-the good, the bad and the evil.

T

6131 SW 128 ST - $ 2,199,000 One of a kind 7/9 Pinecrest, Short Sale with granite baths, kitchen, fireplace, elaborate moldings. Very distinctive home for South Florida. Cabana and tree play house for your parties. Regardless of age!

he good--First you see this updated home on the Internet. Eighty-five percent of buyers preview their home on the Internet. The people bought it in 2005 or they took out an equity line on top of their mortgage and now they are upside down and need to sell. It has updated baths, granite kitchen and they moved the pool to build a wrap around porch that is amazing for parties. The price is great and even your husband is excited. You both leave work early so the back yard can be seen in the daylight. You love it!!! (Short sales are better priced than regular homes but not as good as foreclosures. ) I put in a contract right away. What should you pay? Depends if you get in a competition. If that happens expect to pay full price or more. The seller usually has a lawyer they insist you use-so they now pay your title because they are the escrow and title agent. Which does save you big money. You get the house and now are thoroughly confused what the time line is. Be assured

friends will tell you horror short sale stories—all factual of course. You only have to put $1000 down. There is no money spent on inspections or an appraisal right away. How bad can it get? The Bad-So the money is sent to the sellers title and escrow lawyer. I recommend my customers to hand drop it by to see the law firm or title company. If it is a PO Box that is not a good sign. These are the people who are negotiating the short sale. A short sale is much more about the seller than the buyer. Now the seller must give extensive records showing they qualify for a short sale. Then the bank that holds the mortgage does an appraisal to see if the price is true market value. If they want more money the bank will counter. ( I just had a condo that was bought for $48K get a counter of $67K .) If the bank changes the price you can cancel the contract. (So what is an Approved short sales?--homes that already have the appraisal and the bank has approved the sellers financial situation-RARITY) Did

6390 SW 112 ST - $1,299,000

9873 SW 1ST TERRACE - $275,000

Newly built in 2002. Beautiful 5/5 with 1/1 cottage* Estate Home. Impact windows, granite kitchen with island overlooking huge family room, crown molding, lush landscaping with a variety of palms and fruit trees surrounding covered patio/pool area. Best schools in Dade County. *(Cottage has full granite kitchen and impact windows).

Charming 3/2 featuring chef's modern granite kitchen, s/s appliances, updated bathrooms, recessed lighting, tile floors, crown molding, new a/c, open floor plan with lots of light.Large Family room opens to private backyard with BBQ area, playground and storage shed. Move in with nothing to do but enjoy your life!!

the sellers mention there are two mortgages? A much harder short sale. That is a question to always ask!! Both mortgage companies can agree on the short sale but the first has to okay the payoffs for the second. Maybe they want the second mortgage to get $3000 and the second mortgage wants $5000. Yes, this is usually the pay off price even if the second mortgage is $75K. The first mortgage can nix it because they are in control. This after 6 months of waiting. The Evil-the bank approves the short sale. Usually the bank gives 30 days but the paralegal was on vacation and no one told you-- now you have 25. The contract is LIVE and all dates start quick. Time for that much bigger second deposit-ouch. The banks give exact dates with specifics and the sellers have to sign this. Make sure you get a copy. So now your mortgage guy has to jump on the appraisal and you need to have the inspection lined up yesterday. Don't forget to do the insurance inspections at the same time! If a problem is found with the home the seller usually doesn't have money to fix it but maybe the bank does. One of my customers got a free roof--but that is a rarity. Are you excited to close and move in? Remember, the owners are living there

free. Do you think they want to move fast? Would you? Actually I work with a short sale lawyer, Dania Fernandez, and we do this all the time. No short sale is perfect but you can find great deals. It is truly a lesson in patience. My sister, Christy found out she was pregnant in June. Went into short sale contract in July. Life was good. She closed last week on her short sale. She delivers in two weeks. Then we are going to have an amazing party under her wrap-around-porch by her moved pool.

Panter’s Pointers: Injuries on the rise for distracted pedestrians One of society’s current hot button topics is the danger of distracted driving, but perhaps equally as troublesome is the growth of injuries to distracted pedestrians. Many blame the increased use of mobile technology as the culprit. Similar to using handheld devices while driving, pedestrians can be fatally injured when they are distracted from their surroundings. A recent study by Dr. Richard Lichtenstein, director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine Research at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children in Baltimore found that deaths are on the rise for pedestrians using headphones. Whether it’s a story of a pedestrian walking into oncoming traffic or not hearing horns from vehicles or even trains, the results for distracted pedestrians can be tragic. Among the results, Dr. Lichtenstein’s study found that “the number of deaths of people wearing headphones increased from 16 in 2004-2005 to 47 in 2010-2011.” Perhaps most surprisingly is that the majority of vehicles involved were trains. The key to this alarming new trend is that it affects all populations. While the majority of cases studied involved people under the age of 30 in urban counties across the United States, this is an issue that everyone on the road needs to be aware of. In South Florida we are graced with beautiful outdoor weather throughout the year and so we are a city of runners, bike riders, walkers, etc. Whether cell phones or music devices such as iPods, it is commonplace to see pedestrians wearing headphones. What can we do to limit injuries to distracted pedestrians? First and foremost pedestrians should keep the volume low enough that they can hear what is going on in their surroundings. If you can’t hear someone talking to you, your volume is too loud. Secondly, pedestrians should be looking up at all times while in motion. If you look down to change a song or to use that fun new app, be sure that you are standing still in a safe spot out of traffic’s way. Last but not least, both pedestrians and motorists need to slow down and be aware of their surroundings before entering an intersection or crossing a crosswalk. Never assume the pedestrian will stop for you just like pedestrians shouldn’t assume that vehicles will stop for them. Source: U.S. News on msnbc.com, “Fatal distraction: Deaths of headphone-wearing pedestrians on the rise,” by Sevil Omer, 17 January 2012 CBS News, “Deaths on the Rise for Distracted Pedestrians,” by Jim Axelrod, 27 January 2011

Homestead Exemption Fraud is an EPIC Trend The vast majority of Miami-Dade homeowners are hardworking individuals with one place of residence who pay their fair share of taxes and claim their allowed Homestead Exemption. They are appreciative that state lawmakers have lessened the financial tax burden for them and all those who struggle to play by the rules. Then there are those who find a way to take advantage of the system that was intended to facilitate homeownership. In Miami-Dade County, false claims for the Homestead Exemption are rampant. Sophisticated schemes, false declarations, and even ignorance of the Homestead Exemption contribute to the problem. Whether it is a wealthy out-of-stater claiming exemption on more than one residence or a landlord trying to beat the system, it costs us all dearly. When the government fails to collect legitimate tax revenues, guess what? We all have to make up the difference. Especially in this time of economic upheaval, our government should be earnestly addressing a widespread problem that has gone undetected. The next time you hear of teachers having to dip into their own pockets to pay for school supplies, or cuts that cripple youth recreation programs, or less food for the elders, or public safety employees being laid off, think about those who game the system for their own greedy rewards. It’s just not right. I urge you to clamp down on Homestead Exemption abuse, call out the cheaters, and recoup the losses that are costing taxpayers millions of dollars in services.

What can the honest taxpayer do to help? If you know of any rented HOUSE, TOWNHOUSE, OR CONDOMINIUM, write down the address, go to the Property Appraiser’s website at www.miamidade.gov/pa and search as follows: Click on Property Search, Begin Search, Click on Select Type of Search, Enter Address, Click on Locate. If the property has Homestead Exemption---IT’S FRAUD---no rented property is entitled to Homestead Exemption. Report these scofflaws to the authorities by anonymously calling 786-331-5321. Jim DiBernardo retired as a Police Major after serving Miami-Dade County for 36 years. He steered the pilot program to investigate Homestead Exemption Fraud and assigned sworn officers to the Property Appraiser’s Office.

KEN SHI KAN GOJU-RYU KARATE DO We offer learning programs for both adults and children, tailored to best suit the needs of the particular age group. Our adult classes emphasize physical fitness and flexibility, and work towards student development in the physical, intellectual, and spiritual aspects of the individual. On the other hand, our youth program focuses on building coordination, discipline, and emotional maturity through karate. While Ken Shin Kan is excellent for learning proper self-defense as well as for developing physical health, our main goal is more profound. On a larger scheme, our school focuses on self-development and the pursuit of perfection through the medium of martial arts.
