Relay for Life carnival set for April 9

‘Taste’ raises $30,000 for local schools

n Saturday, April 9, Evelyn Greer Park will be transformed into the beloved childhood game board Candyland. That’s right, Candyland! With all the color and excitement of the candies and characters we all grew up with. Starting at noon and lasting until 8 the following morning, the community of Pinecrest will host Relay for Life to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. We will be joining forces to create a Carnival atmosphere including bounce houses, face painters, mega slides, hair extensions and more. There will be all types of food, from hot dogs to pizza, hamburgers to sausage and a complimentary survivor dinner donated by Bargello’s Bistro at the Falls. Dessert for the survivors will be donated by Joanna’s Market. And the candy! M&Ms, Hershey’s Kisses, Nerds’ — you name it; not to mention ice cream and cotton candy for dessert. Co-chairs Mayor Cindy Lerner and Debi Strochak, long-time advocate for all cancer causes have teamed up with a cross-section of the Village to put together this fun-filled event that will appeal to kids of all ages even the adult ones. The teams that have created the fair like atmosphere come from all walks of life with a similar goal, to help fight can-

Village launches recycling program at all parks BY LOREN MATTHEWS

Director,Parks & RecreationDepartment The Pinecrest Parks & Recreation Department is participating in and supporting the Village recycling programs at all of the area parks. As you may know, games and practices generate a great deal of waste and recyclable materials. We are committed to doing our part to help conserve resources and protect the environment. We ask that you join us in a partnership by participating in our waste reduction and recycling program. Please review this information about the recycling program: • All recyclable material such as plastic bottles (#1 and #2), aluminum cans, glass, newspaper, office paper and cardboard can be emptied in onsite bins. • Recycling bins are located throughout the park. • Bins are blue and are located next to trash cans. Recycling is an important part of our

new program. We ask that you partner with us to: • Keep the fields clean by properly disposing of trash • Recycle all drink bottles by placing them in the blue containers • Educate and motivate players and parents to recycle We will be making every effort to educate our park patrons about our recycling program.

Positive PEOPLE in Pinecrest

LEAH MONTENEGRO Palmetto High School senior Leah Montenegro has been involved in community service ever since she was in the eighth grade. As a result, she has accumulated more than 700 volunteer hours. “I started off doing community service with the Jewish Federation working in soup kitchens,” Montenegro says. “They were holocaust survivors. We would serve them dinner, especially around holidays.” She became involved because her mother was a volunteer for the federation. In high school, she volunteered at Baptist Hospital for two summers in the Cardiovascular Institute. “I got to see a whole different aspect of health care,” she says. Montenegro believes the time that she spent at Baptist is useful even today. “I learned how to interact with people on a social and work level,” she says. “You have a sense that you should be thankful and that everything could change in a split second. I miss working in the hospital.” Another area where she has volunteered is with The Friendship Circle, an organization that matches Jewish teens with Jewish special needs children. Montenegro is president of the organization this year. The program is sponsored by the Chabad of Kendall, and has teen volunteers from 11 schools. She and a friend visit a special needs boy. “He’s 17 and he goes to Killian,” she says. “I’ve seen him grow; he’s my age. We just do a whole bunch of crafts with him. We’ll go on walks or paint pictures.” Montenegro says she and her friend talk about day to day teenage things with him.

“Hearing situations that she and I go through makes him feel good,” she says. “He has limited mobility and he can’t talk, but he’ll sign the songs; he’s very smart.” Friendship Circle has a walkathon coming up on April 3. The money raised will allow them to do a variety of events such as going to Heat games with the special needs kids. “We raise money to sustain us for the whole year,” she says. “We have Hanukah parties. Even with the volunteers, we do little socials.” They also hold workshops to train the students and they teach volunteers sign language. When she’s not volunteering, Montenegro might be found in the swimming pool. She’s on the Palmetto water polo team and last year the team won the GMAC crown and was second in the district tournament. While many water polo players are also on the swim team, Montenegro decided to stick with one sport. “I used to swim and I realized that swimming was too independent for me,” she says. “I like to be a team player. I love people. I love talking to people. I love encountering people.” Her love of interacting with people has propelled her to become vice president of the Health Inspection Project (HIP). “Since health was taken out of the MiamiDade county school system, we go into biology classes and teach students how to take care of their bodies, how drugs can affect them, and about relationships.” The students like the fact that they are having the discussions with their peers. She refers kids to <www.BEHIP.org> for more information. “It’s very user friendly,” she says. “There are plenty of tips on what is safe and what is not safe.” Montenegro is also the student council secretary. She is considering majoring in art history or interior design in college, but she is also interested in psychology and law. If she decides to stay in Florida for school, she says she probably will go to Florida State. If she decides to go to college out of state, then it will be a school in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Pennsylvania or New York. By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

MEGAN PHELAN Megan Phelan is the captain of the Gulliver Prep swim team and she plays water polo. You might think that Phelan would be the school’s Silver Knight nominee in athletics, but she is actually the nominee in the General Scholarship category, which means that she works just as hard in academics as she does in sports. Phelan is in the International Baccalaureate program and she also takes Advanced Placement classes. Her classes have included Physics C, History of the Americas IB High Level, Theory of Knowledge IB, Biology IB HL, Spanish Language IB HL, English HL IB, World Literature and she takes math at the University of Miami. Last semester she took Differential Equations and this semester she is taking Discrete. “I finished the math classes here last year,” she says. “Gulliver has a great dual enrollment with UM.” Phelan is also a long distance swimmer, competing in the 500 freestyle, which means swimming 20 laps to complete an event. “Swimming is my passion, it’s something I’ve been doing my whole life,” she says. “My times were good and I made it to regionals.”

If you know someone who deserves to be a positive person

in the Pinecrest Tribune, send us an email at:

grant@communitynewspapers.com

Phelan says there were many highlights in the 2010 swim season. “We (her teammates) became really close, like a family,” she says. “We had sleepovers and ate breakfast together. Individually we did well. We were all able to motivate each other and we all saw improvement.” Most of the team made it to the district meet and about 30 made it to regionals. Five boys were competitive enough to go on to the state championship. Another highlight was being able to use Gulliver’s new pool. Phelan predicts that the Gulliver water polo team will have a strong season. As if academics and swimming were not enough to fill her days, Phelan also has a baking business that she started with a friend. “Everything is made from scratch,” she says. “Baking is something that we both enjoy and it’s a nice past time. Our two more popular items are the Espresso Brownies and seven layer bars – there’s chocolate, butterscotch, walnuts, coconut and graham crackers.” The money they make from the brownie sales is used to buy school supplies for a school in Managua. “We buy the supplies with the money and send it directly to the school,” she says, adding that she has had the opportunity to get a good education and it is something that she values. She says it bothered her to know that children in other parts of the world do not have basic school supplies. The supplies that she buys and ships include some art supplies and toys, but are only given to students who attend school regularly. “The first time we sent them school supplies, the director of the school wrote back,” she says, “Some of the kids who didn’t go to school decided to return to see.” Phelan volunteers each summer to work in the summer camps at her church. She leads a section where they show videos and the children have lessons. As for college, she has been accepted to Yale and has also applied to Harvard, MIT and Princeton. She is considering majoring in mathematics or molecular biology. “I’m not sure what I want to do right now,” she says. “I’m hoping college will broaden my interests. I don’t know whether I want to go into pre-med or if I want to major in mathematics and then work as an actuary.” Her interest in molecular biology stems from an internship at the Sylvester Cancer Center. “I found the whole research process to be intriguing,” she says. JASON SCHMIDT So many teenagers do not appreciate the opportunity to get an education; but not Palmetto High School junior Jason Schmidt. He knows that getting an education is the key to the road out of poverty. So, he’s tutoring

some of his fellow students to earn money to pay for a child to go to school in Haiti. “He’s currently in pre-school,” Schmidt says of the Haitian student. “I plan on keeping up the sponsorship throughout his education.” The sponsorship is done through Double Harvest, an organization in Haiti that sponsors students. The cost of a sponsorship is about $300-$400 a year. “I really value education,” Schmidt says. “I think that just because a child was born in a country that was stricken with natural disasters and poverty, that child still has a right to a great education to prepare him for his future. “Every semester they send me a progress report on how my student is doing,” he says. “I also get a picture every once in a while. Once I got a pre-printed note that he colored in.” Schmidt began tutoring students last year. He covers a variety of subjects, from geometry to calculus and almost any of the sciences. The cost of a session varies with the students, and his top rate is $40 an hour. “I have one student I’m helping with the SAT for free,” Schmidt says. “I don’t think it’s right that the people spending the most money

preparing for the SATs get the highest scores.” Although he is being tutored himself for the SAT exams, he is using what he learns to help his friend. “I started about two years ago,” he says. “My tutor thinks highly of me, so he’s giving me material to help this student. I just started helping the student this year.” The students who need Schmidt’s help often find him through word of mouth. Initially someone was asking around about tutors and his mother offered his name, saying he would be a good tutor. Schmidt has been involved with other community service projects. He’s participated in the Children’s Bereavement Center Walk and was a volunteer at the Miracle Walk and Run, held each November at Zoo Miami. He became involved when his friend Adam Goldstein began planning the event when they were in seventh grade. “When it first started, we helped decide what we were going to do,” Schmidt says. “I go every year and help keep it in order. We pass out shirts and stuff envelopes, things like that.” Schmidt’s extracurricular activities include the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society and Mu

Alpha Theta. “For Mu Alpha Theta, I go to the competitions,” he says. As a freshman, he was in the individual geometry competition and took 12th place. He cannot compete this year because the competition falls on the SAT and ACT test dates. However, he does plan on competing again, but next time in calculus. Schmidt is on the Palmetto Envirothon team. At a recent competition, the team took first place for Miami-Dade and second place over-all. The team is now eligible for the state competition on April 30. He’s also on the solar invention team in the Fairchild Tropical Garden competition. “We had to make a household device powered by solar power,” Schmidt says. “We decided to make a cell phone charger.” Along with his other activities, Schmidt enjoys playing lacrosse and played for Miami Lacrosse in a fall league. He has played the game since his freshman year in high school. However, this year he decided not to play for the Palmetto Club team so he could focus on school and tutoring. We are proud to say these participants are not only businesses and professionals, restaurants and government officials, but also from our five area schools, churches and synagogues. Entertainment is also being provided from 11 a.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday morning. Various vocal and instrumental groups have donated their services to make this a spectacular event for everyone. The Mix, The Intrasigents and The Eclectics are just some of the bands slated for the evening. Some of the entertainment you can expect to hear and see will be presented by students from our local elementary, middle and high schools. They will grace us with their smooth dance moves and beautiful voices: Jazz, modern, hip hop and much more. The opening ceremony honor guard will be in the capable hands of Boy Scout Troop 457. There will be a survivor lap and a beautiful Luminaria ceremony. At 9 p.m., everything will stop. The band will stop playing and the lights will be turned down and we will celebrate life with the survivors and remember those that lost their battle with cancer. This ceremony of hundreds of lit candles will recognize those that have been honored and remembered in an emotional and inspiring

ceremony. St. Andrews Piper Band, while playing Amazing Grace, will lead the way for a walk with all who wish to show their support. The music will rev back up and continue until we have to shut it down. On a softer note from 11 p.m. on, the Survivor tent will be transformed into an Old Flick style coffee house with entertainment, coffee provided by Starbucks and cupcakes from Mischa’s. Jenny and friends will provide entertainment consisting of acoustic cover artists, a contortionist, a dancer and a comedian. This is a free event. Teams will have food and fun for sale showcasing the past six months of hard work. We have raised over $40,000 with the help of the teams and area sponsors such as Gus Machado Ford Kendall, Upscale Furniture Consignment Gallery-The Falls, Baptist Health South Florida, Vitas, Gottahalfit.com, CBS4 print publications, S. Wine and dine for less at Bagello Bistro BY NANCY EAGLETON

New dishes and traditional customer favorites are now offered at affordable prices on the updated menu at Bargello Bistro in The Falls. Dinner entrées at Bargello are now priced at $10, $14 or $16 and all include your choice of soup or salad. Complete your meal with a glass of wine, offered with any entrée for only $4, and a decadent dessert, all priced at a tempting $3. The fresh, homemade entrées at Bargello Bistro are inspired from the countries in the Mediterranean. They are familiar, like comfort foods from a relative’s kitchen, yet current, healthy and uniquely seasoned to achieve rich flavor. Co-owner Frank Bernstein believes in the Florentine tradition of “tanta varieta,” which means a little of everything, and designed the new menu with this concept in mind. “We offer 17 entrée choices priced at $10, which makes it easy for our guests to try new dishes each time they visit and still enjoy a reasonably priced meal,” said Bernstein. New choices on the menu include Tilapia served with fresh veggies, Tenderloin Tips, Sausage and Peppers and Flat Iron Steak.

G N I N I D OUT All of the traditional favorites, such as Lobster Ravioli and Shrimp Scampi, are still offered, but now at reduced prices. “This is real, fresh, homemade food offered at a price that people can afford,” said Bernstein, who’s been in the restaurant business for more than 25 years and owns Bargello Bistro with business partner, Fred Wright. Desserts are homemade, too. Tasty choices such as Crème Brulee, Tiramisu and Apple Tart are hard to resist, especially at the new price of $3. Guests also have the option to substitute the dinner entrée soup or salad choice for an appetizer from the Starter menu for $4 or an item from the First Course menu for $6. Choices include such favorites as Crispy Calamari, Chicken Wings and Crab Cakes. Bargello Bistro serves lunch daily starting at 11 a.m. and breakfast is served every

Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., alongside champagne mimosas for $3. Owners Bernstein and Wright believe that dining is more than just eating and that a meal should be enjoyed and savored with good wine and good times. The bar and lounge area, outdoor patio seating and spacious dining room provide dining options to fit any mood, occasion and party size. Customer Mirtha Fonte-Okunski said that she enjoys Bargello Bistro whether she’s dining with her husband or her family, lunching with business associates or enjoying happy hour with fellow Howard Drive Elementary school PTA members. “Several of us from the PTA meet there for happy hour. It’s such a comfortable, neighborhood place and the food is wonderful,” she said. “We also hold Howard Drive Family Nights at Bargello and they donate a portion of the sales to our PTA. It’s a very

family-friendly place and Frank has been very supportive of our school.” With many great offerings, any night is a good night to dine at Bargello Bistro. Happy hour is offered daily from 4-7 p.m. and features a half-price appetizer offered Monday through Thursday. You’ll be wined and dined with live jazz on Wednesdays and live music in the lounge on Fridays and on the patio on Saturdays. Enjoy a bottle of wine for half-price every Monday and take the whole family on Wednesdays when kids eat free. Bargello Bistro is located in The Falls near Bloomingdales at 8888 SW 136 St. and is open daily for lunch at 11 a.m. and serves dinner until 11 p.m. Monday – Thursday, 12 midnight on Friday and Saturday, and 10 p.m. on Sunday. • EDUCATIONAL AND TEEN ADVICE • Toby Rose ASK TOBY It is my freshmen year of college and I am miserable. I really made the wrong choice. I have no friends and feel totally alone. Help, please! • Go immediately to your universitycounseling department. They are there to help you. • Join a club, fraternity/sorority or religious group. There is a group for almost anything. Ask your counselor for a list. • Volunteer; ask your counselor where you can start and force yourself to get out of bed, get dressed and participate. Have you heard anything about a new charter school where the Hebrew language will be taught? Yes, the name of the school is Ben Gamla Charter School, located in Miami Beach. It will open in August and offer a combination of English and Hebrew curriculum. The address is 1212 Marseille Drive. Students will be eligible to start kindergarten and continue through fifth grade. There is a $100 refundable book deposit. I was accepted to a very prestigious Ivy League school and I don’t want to go. I’m nervous and afraid. I just can’t see myself there. What do I do? It is normal to be nervous before you go away to college. I tell those kids who aren’t nervous that they have a

problem because they are the ones that are cocky and really won’t succeed. They party too much and spend too little time on their studies. Students who are nervous and apprehensive about going away have the right attitude. It is a brand new chapter in your life and it is normal. If your nervousness stems from the fact that this school really isn’t for you, then you should not go and you are probably saying what am I supposed to do? In the summer, try enrolling in FIU or Miami Dade College and reapply immediately for the next school year to a school that you feel would better suit you. I know you must feel totally overwhelmed with different emotions. Please call me at 305-238-7737 so that we can talk.

I am a senior in high school and I make $100 an hour fixing computers; why do I need to go to college? I can think of many reasons, but the most important one is to help; you to grow up and complete your education, which by the way is much more than computers. Take business courses and get a degree in business so that you can run your own computer business. You obviously love working with computers and are good at it, why not make some real money doing what you enjoy? Toby Rose is president of Toby Rose’s College Prep. She is an independent college counselor, was a Dade County Outstanding Teacher and served as chairperson of the Dade County School Board Academic Advisory Committee. Rose may be contacted by calling 305-238-7737 or via the Internet at <www.tobyrose.com>.

REAL ESTATE Sure, it’s a legitimate question: Can you sell your home without the representation of a professional real estate agent? The legitimate answer is, of course you can – but that begs the next question of whether it makes sense to do so. One assumes that sellers want to obtain the highest price possible. Otherwise, the home could simply be auctioned or sold to the first buyer who offers. Getting the best price depends upon exposure to the widest, most qualified segment of potential buyers. An ad and a yard sign are not enough to create that exposure. While agents spend untold dollars on advertising and signage,

those only attract about 20 percent of actual buyers, so just one ad and one yard sign will yield even less. So where does the lion’s share of motivated buyers come from? In a real estate firm, they come from cooperating brokers and agents. It’s logical, since serious buyers seek the assistance of agents who save them time and money by matching their needs against large inventories. The only buyers attracted to properties “For Sale By Owner” are ones who want to save the same commission that the sellers do! You can choose to represent yourself in this competitive industry, but it may cost you. Remember that a bargain is not measured by what you pay, but by what you get. Mike and Lynda Morgan may be contacted at the Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate Offices at 12155 S. Dixie Hwy., 305253-2800 or by email at <mmorgan321@aol.com>.

Five things your eye doctor won’t tell you BY DR. ADAM CLARIN

As an Optometrist, there are many standard answers I give patients to questions they ask. However, there are certain things that — although eye doctors won’t say it outright — hold true across the board. Here are five things that your eye doctor will never tell you, with good reason: • You can usually get your contacts cheaper online — This might be true, but unfortunately not at the most popular websites – and you may pay a premium for the lower price. Your eye doctor gets trial lenses based on the number of boxes they sell, so if you buy your lenses online, your doctor may not be able to provide you with replacements for ripped, torn or lost lenses. • You can probably find cheaper eyeglasses than what your eye doctor carries — Lenses have to be cut precisely, with specific curves and measurements; “close enough” just isn’t good enough. You didn’t come to my office to see almost as well as possible, you came because you want clear vision. Oftentimes paying more upfront will include extra services or a built-in warranty. • No matter what you think or a re told, your case is not unique — I hear the same stories all day, every day. Everyone says they had perfect vision until they turned 40. Everyone says they’re “blind as a bat.” It’s rare that a patient walks in and says something we haven’t heard. But these experi-

EYE CARE ences allow us to help you quickly and effectively, as long as we listen. • Not everyone needs a yearly exam — Young healthy people with stable vision may not need a yearly exam. But I would absolutely recommend a yearly exam for anyone over 40 years old or anyone with a family history of any eye disease. However, if you’re between 20 and 40 years old, you’ve never needed glasses and you’ve had your eyes dilated, you probably can come every other year to make sure your eyes remain healthy. • Your eye doctor works for you — Make sure you feel like you got your money’s worth. If your vision isn’t 100 percent crisp or if you have any questions, don’t be bashful, call your eye doctor and schedule a follow-up appointment. If it’s within a reasonable amount of time from your exam, there should be no charge for this. You are entitled to feel confident in the care you receive and the outcome of the exam. We will never be right 100 percent of the time, so we’re not upset to have to see you again. Drs. Adam and Bruce Clarin are Optometrists with Clarin Eye Care in Palmetto Bay. Is A Short Sale Right for You? mortgage, and your lender willingly accepts the proceeds from the sale as payment in full,” says Perdigon. “No lien is filed against you, the sale is reflected on your credit report for only 12 to 18 months, and in some cases the lender will even contribute up to $30,000 to cover your relocation expenses.” Before making such an important decision, though, seek professional advice. Perdigon Title Services has special expertise in handling short sales, and its attorney partner can guide you through all aspects of what can be a complex transaction. “We’ve successfully handled hundreds of short sale transactions over the past few years,” says Perdigon. “We’ll work closely with you, your realtor and your lender to ensure the quickest and best possible outcome for all.”

BY PETER B. LAIRD

Recent data indicates that by the end of 2010 nearly half of all property owners in Miami-Dade County owed more on their homes than the properties were worth. That’s 245,530 underwater homes just in Miami-Dade. Statewide, the number jumps to 2.1 million. Do you owe more than your home is worth? Is a major illness, accident, job loss or divorce preventing you from making your monthly mortgage payments? Are you tired of paying for an investment property that has lost its value? You do have options, according to Robert Perdigon, president of Miamibased Perdigon Title Services, a fullservice title company founded in 2002. “In an ideal world, the best strategy is to continue paying your mortgage, wait for the market to correct, let your property appreciate and sell your house when the value has returned,” advises Perdigon. “However, we do not live in an ideal world and property owners need to know their options.” A foreclosure should be avoided at all

costs, Perdigon says. Not only will you lose your home, you could also be forced to pay what you owe on your mortgage plus additional fees. Worse still, it will be reflected on your credit report for three to five years.

Your best option, says Perdigon, may be a short sale. In the past few years, short sales have become the leading distressed property solution. “With a short sale, your house is sold for less than what you owe on your

These dogs will beautify Pinecrest and raise money for Smart Boards BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

It won’t be long before Village residents will begin seeing beautifully illustrated dogs popping up all over Pinecrest. The dogs are part of the SmARTy Dogs for Smart Schools campaign to raise money for Smart Boards in the five Pinecrest schools. Since first seeing a Smart Board about a year ago, Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner has been on a campaign to raise money to get all five Pinecrest schools outfitted with Smart Boards. “You need it for a 21st Century environment,” Lerner says. While each school has some boards, Lerner wants to make sure every classroom has a Smart Board. In total, they need about 180 more boards. “The high school needs the most,” Lerner says. She kicked off the Smart Boards campaign a year ago at Taste of Pinecrest. “I have been actively seeking foundation funding, corporate funding, any help I can get,” she says. So Lerner met with Prince Media Development, the company that ran the peacock campaign in Coconut Grove and the manatee program in South Miami, to develop the SmARTy Dogs campaign. “I will have dogs in parks in Pinecrest one way or another,” Lerner says with a laugh.

Each of the dogs will be sponsored by an individual or business. There are five types of dogs — a big dog similar to Astro on the Jetsons, a lab, a terrier, a poodle and a bulldog. “Our big dog is five feet high and is the size of a Shetland pony,” says Heather Bettner, of Prince Media Development, who is coordinating the project. “Our poodle stands 48 inches high. We chose different sizes because we wanted to be sure people who didn’t have a large space in front of their building could still have a dog and we wanted different types of dogs.” The campaign is looking for sponsors. There is already a list of artists who want to design a dog. “We will be raising sponsorships for the dogs, getting the artists committee and choosing the dogs,” Lerner says. “We’re hoping that by September we will be putting out the dogs. They will stay out as public art until next March when we do Taste of Pinecrest again.” At the end of the campaign, the dogs will be auctioned off to the public. “Everyone’s getting really excited about it,” Lerner says. “It will be a big community wide project.” Bettner says they have been fortunate because they have a large group of artists who want to be a part of the program. They dogs will be placed in public right of ways, in each public park and in each school. Each school will receive a dog for the stu-

dents to design and paint. “Everyone is so excited. The artists are so excited. They think so much of Pinecrest,” Bettner says. Sponsors already involved are Williamson Cadillac, Terranova and Pinnacle Housing Group. “We are confident that we have sponsorship levels for people to participate,” Bettner says. Organizers hope to raise between $80,000 to $300,000 through the SmARTy Dogs campaign. “I can’t say enough about Mayor Lerner. Her support and vision have been impeccable,” Bettner says. “She has been wonderful to work with.” For detail, call Bettner at 305-775-0113.

To receive testosterone-replacement therapy (TRT), men must have a low “free testosterone level, and symptoms and signs of hypogonadism. Restoration of testosterone to levels considered normal for younger men may produce a wide range of benefits for men with hypogonadism that include improvement in libido and sexual function, bone density, muscle mass, body composition, mood, cognition, quality of life and cardiovascular disease. Testosterone replacement may also be effective in relieving symptoms of mild depression and mood disorders in men with low testosterone levels (average age of men studied was approximately 50 years). Risks ofTRT may include worsening prostatic cancer or symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy, liver toxicity, blood disorders, or worsening of untreated sleep apnea or severe heart failure. Therefore, it is important that an experienced health care provider closely monitors the patient while on Testosterone treatment.

Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 combines agility with utility Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The compact GLK 350 is the newest member of the Mercedes-Benz Sport Utility Vehicle family, one that already includes the full-size M-Class, the GL-Class, the crossover R-Class and the rough-and-tough G-Class. Launched in 2009, the GLK is billed as being just the right size for today’s family, whether it’s parking in town while running errands or making a cross-country trip. With a bold profile that suggests power and agility, it looks like a smaller version of the GL. However, closer inspection reveals that it is a modern interpretation of the iconic G-Class, with its angular nose, projection headlights, steeply raked windshield, tightly styled roof and integrated rear spoiler. Smaller and lighter than its SUV siblings, the GLK brings a combination of agility and comfort to the lineup. And as with almost all Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicles, the GLK has four-wheel independent suspension that

makes you think you are driving a sports sedan. The Standard Agility Control suspension provides the benefits of both soft and stiff shock absorbers. Each twin-tube shock absorber is fitted with a hydraulic by-pass piston that acts like a very soft shock absorber to effectively dampen road noise and tire vibration. However, over bumpy or uneven roads, the by-pass piston is inoperable, preserving the steering and handling response of a stiffer shock absorber. With very good ground clearance for offroad driving, a standard roof rack and optional running boards, the GLK is a versatile SUV. Its powertrain features a 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to a sophisticated seven-speed automatic transmission and available 4MATIC full-time four-wheel-drive. Standard equipment also includes 19-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, roof rails, privacy glass and chrome detail touches inside and out. On the inside, the GLK has all the design ambiance and safety technology of Mercedes-Benz cars. The instrument cluster has three analog gauges that show engine speed, road speed, fuel and coolant temperature. A 4.5-inch display in the center of the speedometer is linked to a 12-button multifunction steering wheel that can call up a variety of information such as phone and audio system information — radio station,

CD track or MP3 playlist. Similar to the system on the S-Class sedan and CL coupe, an electronic controller on the lower console works like a computer mouse to provide easy, quick operation of many functions that used to require multiple buttons and switches. By turning and pressing the aluminum controller, menus and submenus on the center-console display are displayed and selected for the audio system, as well as the optional navigation system and
