Annual Holiday Toy Festival Around Town is a big hit with the kids Lots of folks want BY LEE STEPHENS nterval International, a leading provider of vacation services headquartered in South Miami, and the City of South Miami co-sponsored the Holiday Toy Fest on December 17, to benefit more than 400 deserving children in the community. Interval employees donated toys and volunteered their time to participate in the event. Everyone enjoyed a festive holiday celebration complete with food, arts and crafts, games, and music. Each child visited with Santa and received a holiday gift and tasty treats. Highlights of the event included Santa’s arrival on a Miami-Dade fire truck, “Rudolph’s Red Hot Dance Zone,” “Frosty’s Face Painting,” and “Santa’s Workshop” where the kids designed holiday ornaments. Coldwell Banker was another one of several area businesses distributing toys at the Annual Holiday Party, held at South Miami’s new Community Center which opened last fall. Coldwell Banker

assage Envy, in the Red Sunset building in South Miami, has been open for a few months and owner Lourdes Martinez’s goal with her new business is to “make massage affordable, convenient and professional.” “I want to bring massage into the mainstream, making it a lifestyle, not a luxury,” said Martinez. “You can have a massage on a regular basis without skimping on the posh atmosphere.”

Okay, voters of South Miami. You’ll soon get to choose one of the following bathing beauties that are running for the esteemed position as commissioner in the city of Pleasant Living. This special election which will be held on Jan 13 came about as a result of the resignation of now former commissioner Randy Wiscombe. The line up is as follows, in alphabetical order, and not necessarily in the order of importance, qualification or ego: Javier Baños, Shawn D. Crews, Frank J. Cuzzocrea, Levy Kelly and Valerie Newman. Javier Baños currently serves as chairman on the city’s Pension Board. The 27 year old attorney and accountant is married and may for the first time since former Mayor and now State Representative, Julio Robaina represent, (if there were districts) the north end of South Miami. This is his first try at politics and when asked as to the primary reason he is running, said, “I would like to utilize my financial background for the betterment of South Miami particularly at a time when our city will be facing very serious financial challenges.” Shawn D. Crews, 37, is a manager for St. Andrews Holdings, LTD and is also new to the political scene. He had served on the city’s Planning

Board and brings with him much experience and commitment. He is the proud father of two beautiful daughters and the husband of a school teacher. The Crews family has resided in South Miami for 9 years and is here for the long term. Asked as to why he is running, Crews said, “For months now many residents have suggested that I run for office. I have worked and contributed much of my time not only to the city but have helped several non profit organizations. I believe my managerial and financial background along with a common sense approach to solving problems will help our city.” Frank J. Cuzzocrea is no stranger to politics. The 29 year old is married and is a corporate accounts manager for Enterprise Rent A Car. He has not only run for the city commission before but has also served on the city’s Budget Review and Finance Committee. A former President of the South Miami Homeowner’s Association, he was asked as to why he is running, “My wife and I have lived in South Miami for 11 years and we love it here. I

was planning to run in the 2010 election, however, due to Commissioner Wiscombe’s unfortunate illness, I have decided to move up my plans. My goal is to preserve our hometown character, keep taxes as low as possible and lend my experience in the private financial sector to help our city steer clear of the economic hurdles that lie before us.” Levy Kelly is also no stranger to politics. The retired government employee is 64, has been married for 38 years and is the proud father of two. Levy Kelly, though retired, makes the best barbecued ribs in town. Born and raised in South Miami, he and his family are widely considered as cornerstones of South Miami. The son-in-law of the late Commissioner James Bowman, Levy Kelly has served on many boards and is currently on the Parks and Recreation Board along with the Alliance for Youth. Asked as to why he is running,” There is a real disconnect between some of our elected officials and our citizens. I will bring a new perspective and challenge the leadership to look at a new direction.” Valerie Newman ran for mayor in the last election against our very popular Mayor Horace Feliu. The 57 year old is married and sells Tempur-Pedic bed mattresses. Public records indicate that Valerie Newman was originally Valerie Ramos, then Valerie Fox, followed by Valerie Newman then later Valerie Newman-Hurley. Mayor Horace Feliu was contacted regarding his former political nemesis and was asked as to his thoughts on Valerie Newman’s candidacy. “I am saddened that Ms. Valerie NewmanHurley, or Ms. Valerie Newman as she now calls herself, would request that an elected official, “Screw the Black Vote.” It is particularly embarrassing for me that a fellow Cuban-American would degrade any minority. Someone with this mindset can easily request that an elected official ‘screw the Anglo vote’ or ‘screw the Jewish vote.’ This is simply wrong and certainly a disturbing and dangerous statement for a politician to make.” The infamous e-mail is public record and a copy may be obtained from the

City Clerk’s office. If you missed the candidate’s forum on Monday January 5th at Chamber South offices, it was recorded and CD’s will be available at city hall. Okay, here’s something that might put a smile on your face. If you’re under the age of 30, please do not read this. On Craigslist.com, in the personals portion of it, under the listing of men seeking men, it clearly shows a picture of some guy that lots of us know, parked on a raft in his pool, on his stomach, looking at the camera and getting a tan ALL OVER. It’s a great shot (if you’re into good camera work) and what’s even more startling is what a good writer he is as he describes in detail exactly what he is looking for. And what makes this something to write about is that now one of his former buddies is helping spread the word by letting other folks know exactly where they too, can find this personal ad, complete with photo of this guy in his pool. And now the guy in the pool sent out an email around town, sort of castigating his former buddy for publicizing the personal ad. Duh—isn’t that why he put his ad on Craig’s list?! If he didn’t want everyone to know he could have been more discreet, like let’s see, not running his photo with the ad. Now here’s the better part. It seems as though the emails that have been bantering back and forth have now been sent to some

public officials over at city hall. So I was just wondering, if staff could now look at these public documents during work hours. Maybe we’ll see if we can get the emails and photos to be brought up, discussed, looked at and reviewed at an upcoming meeting. Okay, it’s really confirmed this time. One city commissioner is under investigation. It has to do with marriages, and let’s see, mortgages and let’s see what else...Ooops, I promised I wouldn’t write about the others. There is an old saying that many times gets attributed to Groucho Marx that goes as follows: “I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member.” Keeping that in mind, was it just a test by a sitting commissioner when he made application to a local civic group and on the verge of the club’s decision, he withdrew his application? Hmmm. Thought for the Day: I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell. — William Tecumseh Sherman Got any tips? Contact me at 305-669-7355, ext. 249, or send e-mail to <Michael@communitynewspapers.com>. Groups turn out for seasonal celebrations Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB

In Coconut Grove thousands packed the streets for the area’s 37th Annual King Mango Strut Parade on December 28. It was a picture perfect day for the festivities and the crowd packed the outdoor restaurants or brought out lawn chairs and blankets to reserve their space early for this crazy day of fun. As always, the floats and walking/ ridings units spoofed the big parades with crazy entries that reflected and put a comedic spin on current events. From a guy in a wheelchair with a broken leg and bandaged head that read “Crippled Economy” to “Josephine the Plumber,” the laughs were plenty. Having the most fun, were the people on the Shake A Leg Float, entitled the 2008 Bail Out. With large buckets of water on a sailboat that was plastered with names of big companies bailed out by the government, the group threw water on the parade goers who requested a bail out. This is truly a grass roots parade like few others. Of course, this was only one of the many celebrations that abound as South Florida ushers in a New Year. The BCS National Championship at Dolphin Stadium on January 8 brings with it other events for visitors and fans. In fact, on Wednesday, January 7, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., the University of Florida Alumni Association will be hosting Gator Day at Jungle Island. As a prelude to the BCS National Championship game the following day, the Gator Nation will be coming togeth-

er for a pre-game pep rally at Jungle Island. Come enjoy the orange and blue sights and sounds of the Fightin’ Gator Marching Band, Gator Cheerleaders, Mr. Two Bits, Albert & Alberta and so much more. Wear orange and blue Florida Gators gear and admission to Jungle Island and the festivities will be only $15 per person. For more information, check out www.ufalumni.ufl.edu or call Jungle Island at 305-400-7000. Closing out 2008, December was a busy month for non-profits. The Junior Orange Bowl Committee had young athletes from around the world travel to Miami participate in the JOBC’s world class international tennis tournament and golf invitational while bands from around the nation joined the line up for the Junior Orange Bowl Parade on December 30, and several girls and boys basketball teams from around the nation also made the trip to Miami to play in the JOBC Basketball Tournament. Under the leadership of event chair, Chuck Little, this event has grown in prominence and national recognition as well. South Miami Rotary members are enjoying their new meeting venue. The meetings of that Club are now held every week at Carraba’s Italian Grill, 5829 SW 73 Street, South Miami. Parking is available in the new municipal parking garage. Meetings are every Tuesday, 12:15 p.m., and visiting Rotarians are welcomed. This hard working group is in the final countdown for their upcoming South Miami Rotary Art Festival to be held in February 21 and 22, 2009. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the festival is a weekend of fun, food, entertainment and an opportunity to look at the work of talented artist and artisans. Chess players will be happy to learn

Martinez designed the beautifully warm, spa-style space with mahogany doors, travertine floors and designer furniture. There are ten treatment rooms and one couple’s massage room equipped with state of the art massage tables and luxurious fleece bed coverings. After 16 years in the real estate business, Martinez runs her new endeavor with her husband, Wayne, AKA Bruce Wayne of 97.3, the Coast radio. “I’m sales and marketing and he’s store operations,” added Martinez. Martinez discovered the Massage Envy concept in the fall of 2007 and it took a little over one year for the vision to come to fruition. “I walked into the Falls location last year and was very stressed,” said Martinez. “I had a massage and walked out with a franchise. I loved the idea of a great massage with the convenience and affordability. I loved the whole concept.” Martinez reveals that the benefits of massage go beyond relaxing and reducing stress. Massages have been proven to improve posture and circulation, lower blood pressure, strengthen the immune system, help manage pain, improve flexibility, relieve tension headaches and more. Many of the therapists at Massage Envy specialize in a certain massage type, such as deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, sports medicine or reflexology. Martinez employs 27 fulltime licensed massage therapists and 35 employees total who all get to know their clients by name. “I interviewed over 100 people to find the right therapists,” said Martinez. Massage Envy’s one-hour sessions and convenient business hours make it possible for even the busiest people to enjoy a massage on a regular basis. “The therapists use a special lotion that evaporates on your skin, so you won’t feel like you need to shower after the massage. You can take an hour for the massage, re-dress and go about your day,” explained Martinez. “We have many business people who come in on their lunch hour and parents who slip in a massage while their child is at dance,” Martinez added. “We’ve also been extremely successful with the athletes in the area… the runners and members of the bicycle clubs are all members.” As a member of the Massage Envy Wellness Program, customers pay $59 per month for a one-hour session. Each

additional massage during that month is at the special member rate of $39, making the benefits of massage therapy always within reach. “Your monthly massage can roll over if you happen to miss a month, so you never lose it,” explained Martinez. “You can even walk into a location when you’re out of town and receive your pre-paid massage.” Massage Envy has 840 stores nationwide and locations can be found at their website, www.massageenvy.com. Upon entering Massage Envy, members are ushered away to a special, private waiting area, complete with fruit, cookies, tea and more. Another notable member perk is the customer referral program. Members can earn free massages if a new member joins

and indicates that the existing member referred them to the facility. “The existing member will get a free massage session put into their ‘bank,’” said Martinez. Martinez says that “the South Miami business community has been so supportive” since the opening and that “in the first 30 days, the location is the second most successful opening in the company.” Massage Envy is located at 6920 Red Road in the Red Sunset building and parking is available behind the Red Sunset building. They are open seven days per week, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 10 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., making it easy for anyone to find time for a massage. You can even host a private party on Saturdays after 8 p.m. Appointments are recommended, especially if you have an established relationship with a therapist, and walkins are always welcome. All I want for 2009 is peace and prosperity R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Maybe it was a list for Santa; perhaps it is a list of resolutions for 2009. Whatever we call it, I sincerely hope and pray that we in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and the nation will see a brighter 2009 for all who live in America. Here is my wish list: • From all of us, Democrats and Republicans, please grant president-elect Obama the strength, courage and knowledge to turn our nation around. • Find a resolution for ending the war in Iraq and Afghanistan; bring our men and women home, and end the financial drain on Americans. • Find the dollars to upgrade our medical and psychological services for our returning veterans and those that have served in previous wars. This is the minimum we owe the brave members of our armed services.

• Mend our economy so thousands of unemployed Americans can return to their jobs and feel secure about their futures. • Find a way to slow down the foreclosure process. We must move quickly as every month that passes finds thousands of delinquent homeowners too late for assistance. • Let’s hope that the $700 billion giveaway to financial institutions works and doesn’t end up as an infusion of cash to reward those that made horrible decisions. • May the stock market improve and put the dollars back in our pockets, dollars that we lost over the past year. • Save the health of those that must work past retirement age because of the economic turndown. • Find a way to provide medical assistance to the 40 million Americans who do not have health insurance. • Here at home, resolve our county’s mass transit problems. We need to see a benefit for the extra sales tax dollars we have been paying since 2002. • Find a way to finance the Port of Miami tunnel with a revenue bond issue. We need to get the truck traffic off the

VIEWPOINT downtown streets. • Tourism is the backbone of South Florida’s economy, the driving force behind our employment. Let’s find the dollars to advertise, advertise, advertise in Europe and South America to keep tourists coming and spending in our community. • Help our legislature to find the dollars to support our public schools. Without education we have no future. • Find new sources of revenue in our state such as eliminating many of the sales tax exemptions. • Convince the powers-to-be in Tallahassee that the State of Florida, not some offshore investment group, should receive the financial benefits of Alligator Alley. The dollars that would be received today will long be forgotten in years to come. • Work on our municipal, county and state budgets to find ways to trim the fat

without hurting the citizens of our state. • Try to convince Citizens Property Insurance that it is part of “our” government, the citizens of Florida, and that its function is to serve the community. • Lastly, please find a way to teach some of our misguided elected officials that they are servants of the public and were not elected to further their own personal futures. “Public servant,” after all, means “serving the public!” Please join me in seeking ways to return America to a better place to live, work, raise our families and live out our retirement years in peace and prosperity.

Holiday celebrations and gift-giving mean lots of extra waste and recyclables for collection by Miami-Dade County’s waste collection crews and recycling service providers. To help its waste collection and recycling customers manage their waste, the Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) offers the following tips: Recycle as much as possible. The county’s single-stream recycling program offers a convenient way to manage extra holiday waste. The program accepts the following: • Glass, aluminum, steel and narrowneck plastic food and beverage containers (e.g., soda, water, juice, milk, eggnog and cider containers). Aluminum and plastic beverage containers can be flattened to save space in the cart. • Paperboard boxes used to package food and beverages such as crackers, cookies, cereal, pasta, soda/juice cans, juice boxes, hot chocolate packets and other convenience foods. Flatten these to maximize space in the recycling cart. • Gift boxes, shoe boxes and corrugated cardboard boxes. Be sure to break down the boxes so that they fit completely inside the cart. • Holiday cards, letters, magazines, store catalogs, gift wrap tubes,

newsprint and packing paper. All of these paper products are acceptable in the county’s expanded single-stream recycling program. Reuse whenever possible. If you are replacing old toys, clothing or household items with new ones or de-cluttering after the holidays, remember the old adage: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Gently used books, toys, clothing and household items are always welcomed by local thrift shops or charitable organizations. And donating goods keeps useful items out of the landfill. Pr operly dispose of the r est. What’s left of your waste after you have recycled and reused should fit nicely into the county’s 96-gallon EZGo waste cart. Miami-Dade solid waste customers are reminded that excess garbage will not be picked up from the curbside. Extra bags and waste placed on top of or alongside the cart cannot be collected by the automated waste collection vehicle. DSWM provides curbside waste collection and recycling services to singlefamily residents in the unincorporated service area and local municipalities such as Cutler Bay, Palmetto Bay and Pinecrest. For additional recycling and waste management tips, visit the department’s website at <www.miamidade.gov/dswm>.

New Year’s Fitness Facts BY SCOTT BAUMAN

Fact #1: The number one New Year’s resolution is to lose weight and get into better physical shape. Fact #2: Close to 95 percent of those people will give up on their resolution within the first thirty days. I think it comes as no surprise to anyone that the number one New Year’s resolution for Americans is to lose weight and get into better physical shape. The next fact unfortunately is not a big surprise either, particularly to those of us in the business or those who have given up on their own resolutions. So why is it so hard to lose weight? There are a couple of reasons that people find losing weight so hard. The first reason is that most people go about it the wrong way. An overly restrictive diet or exercise plan that is too aggressive will inevitably lead to burn out and failure. Even worse, a diet that is too low in calorie will create a yo-yo dieting syndrome in which your metabolism will actually get slower and cause you to gain even more weight when you begin eating normally again. The key here is to establish a healthy eating plan that is realistic to stick with. This leads to the next reason that so many people fail. The “secret” to getting into better physical shape and losing weight is consistency. Consistency and determination are the keys to losing weight and getting into shape. It does not matter if you are on the best nutrition and workout program in the world. If you do not stick to it consistently for a good period of time you will not get results.

The good news is that you do not have to be on the best program in the world; as long as you are dedicated and consistent you will reap better results than most. It is important to set a goal, a realistic goal, and stick to it no matter what. Make the goal something attainable, like 30 minutes of exercise for a minimum of 3 times per week and stick to it. The difference between the successful and the unsuccessful is that the successful do it even on the days that they don’t feel like it. If you only exercise on the days that you “feel like it,” you may never exercise at all! Just set a plan and do it. You will be surprised that even on the days that you didn’t feel like doing it, you will feel great when you are finished and proud of yourself that you have accomplished what you set out to do. Start by setting a reasonable short term goal, like exercising for 3 times per week for 30 minutes each time and losing 5 pounds this month. Next, make yourself accountable to that goal. Commit to exercise with your spouse, find a workout partner, hire a trainer, or join a class; but somehow make the commitment to exercise. When you have someone else depending on you or waiting for you, it is much more likely you will keep that commitment. Once you have made this commitment, do not let anything stop you from reaching your goals. There will be days that you do not want to go, but go anyway. Dear editor, I just read your article about creating a new park near downtown South Miami…what a fantastic idea! This is something that EVERYONE in our community should get behind and work to make a reality. Imagine a beautiful oasis in the center of our town that everyone can enjoy. We are fortunate to have the land available and hopefully the current owners will cooperate with the city on this project. If anyone has any doubts about the value that a park adds to a city, just look at Central Park in New York. This is a chance for South Miami commissioners and citizens to create an important legacy for their children and grandchildren and for the future of our city. Christopher J. Bluntzer Broker-Owner, The Bluntzer Group • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Dear editor, I am very pleased to read South Miami residents, visitors and business owners are discussing the idea of a downtown “central park.” As a resident, a member of the planning board and former candidate for commission I publiclly advocated a downtown park since the first discussions of building the parking garage began many years ago, I even submitted sketches showing a fountain, sitting areas and large shade trees where the garage now sits to previous commissions. Unfortunately I think everyone was too consumed with the garage at the time and did not see the trees for concrete. It parking garage land was an unique and missed opportunity to convert city owned property to a centrally located park where people could to meet, greet and grow around. We must seriously explore future opportunities to create a central green space where people may enjoy all the City has to offer, a place where we can grow as a community and enhance the quality of life for all generations. Yes, a central park may even encourage environmentally sound behavior such as walking, riding a bicycle (or horse) and just kicking back to enjoy life or shopping at locally owned and operated business. Just as donuts are fun and delicious to eat they would not be donuts without the central hole and just as New York City is one of the greatest and environmentally sound cities in the world it would not be what it is without it’s Central Park. South Miami’s Central Park is long over due, let’s not miss an opportunity to truly discuss this a serious manner with the intent to act. Think globally, act locally, and reduce, reuse and recycle. Thanks to generosity of the staff members, they presented Board members of Alliance for Youth with nearly 60 gifts.

Veronica Birch Flores, Executive Vice President of FNB said that it is one more way that First National Bank of South Miami demonstrates its commitment to the South Miami community. “Alliance for Youth does fabulous work for the children in our community,” said Flores. “James McCants is a wonderful role model for your people. Our staff members really came through again this year. Their generosity of spirit and willingness to share with others less fortunate is truly inspiring, especially during this very difficult economic times. We could not be more proud of our team.”

Miami Killian Cougarettes chosen to perform in Rose Bowl Parade BY DEBBIE LAFERTY ASBILL Nine senior members of Miami Killian High School’s Cougarettes — Valeria Alvarez, Nicole Garmel, Taisha Henriquez, Katy Hernandez, Karry Pomes, Brittney Rohan, Natalie Rosa, Lianet Sardui and Danielle Shea — were selected by Bands of America to participate with the national Honor Band in the 2009 Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 1 in Pasadena, CA. The young ladies were selected from among hundreds of applicants across the nation for membership in this prestigious honors ensemble. “We are honored with this great opportunity of representing our school and community,” said Pomes, captain, and Rosa, co-captain. “We love being part of the Cougarettes and we’ll definitely make them proud.” The Marching Cougar Band director is John Bixby. “I’m very proud of these young ladies; this year’s Cougarettes won superior awards and helped lead the marching band in obtaining the Grand Champion Marching Band award,” Bixby said. “I will watch them in the Rose Bowl Parade with prestigious honor.”

Ricardo Rodriguez, Killian principal added his praise. “The Killian Marching Cougar Band and the Cougarettes are the best musical talent here in South Florida and I’m proud to have the honor of watching this group of talented ladies in the Rose Bowl Parade representing our school.” The BOA Honor Band is a 300-piece national ensemble with winds, percussion and a flag and dance team. George N. Parks, director of the University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band, and an all-star staff will direct the band. Bands of America is a program of Music for All, one of the nation’s largest and most influential organization’s in support of active music-making. The Cougarettes Color Guard performers earned the opportunity to spend a week in Southern California, where they had rehearsals, performed at the Tournament of Roses Bandfest and Disneyland, participated in special activities as well as a featured appearance in the world-famous parade. “To be selected for this unique opportunity is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these students,” said Scott McCormick, Bands of America president

Florida author to discuss his book, The First Hollywood BY TINA MENDITTO Florida author and former Miami resident Shawn Bean will be at Books and Books in Coral Gables on Saturday, Jan. 10, 7 p.m., to discuss The First Hollywood, a historical non-fiction account that showcases one of show business’ bestkept secrets: it was Jacksonville, FL, not Hollywood, CA, that served as America’s original film capital. Immediately following the intimate discussion and book signing, there will be a free, al fresco screening of Cecil B. DeMille’s The Greatest Show on Earth in the Books & Books courtyard located at 265 Aragon Ave. The Café at Books & Books will be open for dinner and drinks following the author’s discussion and book signing. For additional information, call 305442-4408 or visit online at <www.booksandbooks.com>. The First Hollywood remains a top seller on Amazon.com and has been featured on CNN, USA Today, The Hollywood Reporter, Florida Travel + Life, MIAMI Magazine, Orlando Magazine, and Florida International Magazine among others. Published by the University Press of Florida, the book’s release marks the 100th anniversary of the first film ever made in Florida — Love in the Everglades, 1908. The First Hollywood explores the story of Jacksonville as a turn-of-the-century film town that once drew industry elite and wide-eyed hucksters like a cinematic Gold Rush. In fact, from 1909 to 1926 approximately 300 films were produced in Jacksonville. However, when the famed Hollywood sign was built into the hills of Los Angeles in 1923, it marked the rise of one film capital and the fall of another.

Community Invited to YMCA Family Fitness Challenge

- By Julian Castro, Membership and Fitness Director, South Dade Family Branch, YMCA of Greater Miami

As part of the YMCA Family Fitness Challenge, families will submit photos of themselves engaged in healthy activities together.

W

ith tough economic times surrounding us, families are getting back to basics and concentrating on what is most important, their general well-being. Parents must increasingly find economical ways for the family to socialize, stay entertained and be together. They also must ensure that their children are staying healthy and active, while finding ways to reduce their own stress levels. The YMCA is here to HELP with our newly launched Be Healthy, Be Together, Belong! campaign aimed at families who are seeking ways to stay connected, and be healthy in spirit, mind and body all year long. A large component of this will be the YMCA Family Fitness Challenge, a free 12-week program open to the community where families participate and have fun TOGETHER. The YMCA Family Fitness Challenge kicks-off January 17th with a free Family Fun Day, Fitness Carnival and Open House. The South Dade Family YMCA event takes place from 11 am – 4 pm; and the Homestead Family YMCA event takes place from 12 noon to 5 pm. The kick-off starts with a Pep Rally, followed by family activities such as basketball games, fitness obstacle courses, field relays and MORE! Each family member will collect a chip for each completed activity. The first 50 families to complete all activities and collect their chips will receive a YMCA gift bag! The Family Fitness Challenge is free and open to everyone, both YMCA members and the general community. Registration will take place at the kick-off events, so please join us! The next 12 weeks will feature special themes along with a different family activity every week. Families earn points based on participation in daily exercise.

We’ll look to our YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, and use the honor system! Points also will be awarded based on weekly family photos you’ll take as you complete your family activity for the week. Week 1 ( Jan 17 – Jan 23): Families invited to register at the YMCA branches in South Dade and Homestead, and have a fitness evaluation by the YMCA wellness staff. This week’s Family Photo Activity is “Family Pantry Raid.” It’s your chance to get rid of the junk food! Week 2 ( Jan 24 – Jan 30): This week’s Family Photo Activity is “Two TV/Computer-Free Nights,” where your family spends time together, eating dinner as a family with the TV and computer turned off! Week 3 ( Jan 31 – Feb 6): The Family Photo Activity for this week is “Family Road Trip,” where your family takes a photo of a short trip together to the beach, a local park, or even for a walk around the neighborhood. Week 4 (Feb 7 – Feb 13): Give your family a special valentine for this week’s Family Photo Activity with “Family Cooking,” where you prepare a meal together, and have everyone join in. Week 5: (Feb 14 – Feb 20): Come and take your family’s picture at the YMCA for a Free Family Fun Day with lots of activities to enjoy together! Week 6 (Feb 21 – Feb 27): Take a photo of your family volunteering. Participate in a food drive, beach cleanup, or other community activity that you can do together. Week 7 (Feb 28 – Mar 6): It’s “Family Movie Night.” Take a photo of your family watching a movie on TV or DVD, or out at the theater. Week 8 (Mar 7 – Mar 13): Time to check up on that pantry with another “Family Pantry Raid.” Did you keep the junk food to a minimum? This week take pictures of 2 healthy family meals. Week 9 (Mar 14 – Mar 20): Photograph your family engaged in a 30-minute cardio activity. You can walk, bike or take a cardio class together. Or jump rope, play football in the yard or any other activity that gets your heart pumping! Week 10 (Mar 21 – Mar 27): “Family Chores” are a great way to be active around the house. Photograph family members mowing the lawn, cleaning the house or even doing laundry. Week 11 (Apr 3 – Apr 10): Have a “Family Walk/Run” and take photos along the way. Week 12 (Apr 11 – 15): The YMCA Family Fitness

Challenge is drawing to a close, so it’s time to check in at the Y for a new wellness assessment to see how you did. April 18: Final Celebration and YMCA Healthy Kids Day. Come to the YMCA for a free day of games and healthy activities for families. Awards will be presented to the Family Fitness Challenge Winners, with a grand prize of a 6-month YMCA family membership. I hope you will join us for the YMCA Family Fitness Challenge. Families of all sizes and ages are welcome. (from singles to families to seniors). Make the YMCA part of your family this year.

More than 60 people came out to the Homestead Family YMCA’s Workout-BeforeYou-Pig-Out Family Event on Thanksgiving morning.

Nissan Frontier tweaks design, adds PRO-4X model Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Nissan Frontier is a pickup that’s been designed and built for people who want a truck that’s good for both work and play. For 2009, Nissan engineers have tweaked the overall design of the Frontier, adding a new front fascia grille and headlight design, and new 16- and 18-inch wheels. At the same time, a new off-road model — the PRO-4X — has been added to the lineup, along with new crew cab packages that include popular optional equipment that would cost a lot more if purchased separately. The Frontier has excellent acceleration, towing capacity and off-road ability thanks to the 4.0-liter DOHC V-6 that produces 261 hp and 281 pounds-feet of torque. It’s the same VQ engine series that’s used in Nissan’s 350Z, Maxima, Altima, Murano and Quest, but it’s specif-

ically tuned for a truck. The V-6 also gets good fuel efficiency at 17/21 mpg. A 2.5liter, 152 hp DOHC inline four-cylinder engine also is available on the base King Cab 4x2 model. Three transmissions are available — a five-speed automatic, a six-speed manual and a five-speed manual (on King Cab four-cylinder models). Frontier 4x4 models include a shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive system with 2WD/4H/4LO modes operated by an electronically controlled part-time transfer case. As for styling, the Frontier has many of the full-size Nissan Titan’s features, including the angled strut grille, large bumpers, short front and rear overhangs and large geometric fender flares. It also shares Titan’s suspension layout and many component designs, including the all-steel double-wishbone front suspension and solid axle rear suspension, with over-slung leaf springs and a long suspension stroke for optimized off-road performance. Again this year, Frontier offers Crew Cab SE and LE Long Bed models (the beds are more than 13 inches longer). The Long Bed models have the roomy interior of the Crew Cab, plus the usable bed space of the King Cab. Both the King

The Nissan Frontier has an angled strut grille, large bumpers and large geometric fender flares.

Cab and Crew Cab models offer a factoryapplied, spray-on bed liner and the Utilitrack tie-down system that provides excellent cargo hauling flexibility through the use of five special “C” cross-section rails mounted in the bed. The PRO-4X off-road is the all-new model for 2009 and it comes with such performance enhancements as Bilstein high-pressure shock absorbers, additional skid plates on the oil pan and transfer case, an electronic rear differential locker, 2- or 4-wheel limited-slip and unique machine-finished 16-inch aluminum-alloy off-road wheels with large BFGoodrich P265/75R16 Rugged Trail tires.

Inside, the PRO-4X has a distinctive leather-appointed, red-stitched shifter knob and steering wheel, a chrome accent ring around the white-faced meter gauges, and a trip computer. All PRO-4Xs have a body-colored grille and bumpers, outside mirrors and door handles, and fog lamps. Our test vehicle was a Frontier 4x2 LE with a base price of $27,040.

Cargill, in collaboration with the National FFA Organization, will award $350,000 in scholarships to high-school seniors who plan to enroll in post-secondary education next fall and currently live in communities where Cargill has operations. The national program will award 350 scholarships of $1,000 each. In addition, each recipient’s high school will receive a $200 grant from Cargill. FFA will process the applications and select the scholarship recipients, although students do not need to be FFA members to be eligible. Case, CEO of the National FFA Organization. “FFA scholarships are paving the way for future industry leaders to get the education they deserve.” Scholarship guidelines and the application are available online at <www.cargill.com> and <www.ffa.org>. The application requires the signature of a Cargill employee from the local community. Applications are due Feb. 15, 2009. Scholarships will be awarded in May.
