he February 9th general and special elections held in South Miami brought changes to the make-up of local government in the City of Pleasant Living. City Hall Commission Chambers was the only polling place for the eight precincts that are part of the town, both for the Tuesday voting and the early voting on Saturday February 6th. Roughly a third of the voting was by absentee ballot. It was in the Commission Chambers following the close of the polls that the votes were tabulated and the names of the winning candidates were announced by the City Clerk, Maria M. Menendez. based out of Miami, Florida. They bring a wealth of experience to their collaboration, from the Broadway musicals of New York to the honky-tonks of West Texas. Their music is called “Fusion Folk Americana” a blend of many different elements that comes from their vast and wide-ranging musical backgrounds. With the release of their debut CD, Susan’s House, and its follow-up (May 2009), As The Universe Unfolds, Jennings and Keller are quickly gaining recognition throughout the country. In 2007 alone, they were finalists in five songwriting contests across the nation: South Florida Folk Fest, Suwanee SpringFest, Susquehanna, SolarFest, and Falcon Ridge Folk. T he Red Sun set M e rchants Association hosted its monthly membership luncheon at Ra Sushi last Tuesday. General Manager Tim Timmbrooke and his staff did serve up sushi in every size and shape to the crowd of forty. Timm explains it was “his pleasure to host the people who are working hard for our community.” Repeat business and referrals are sure to follow because it was yummy and fun. Among the highlights, his talk centered on the Henry Mancini Institute (HMI) that moved here after ten years from Los Angeles. Berg was very familiar with HMI and the Mancini Family during his tenure as head of Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California; so, when HMI announced its plans to close, several leading music organizations from across the United States vied for the opportunity to host it and the Mancini family chose Dean Berg and the Frost School of Music…an impressive coup for UM, Dean Berg and South Florida. Stoddard defeated incumbent Horace G. Feliu, receiving 910 votes to Feliuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 634, almost 59 percent of the total cast. In the Group 1 Commission race, Valerie Newman was re-elected, receiving 914 votes while Levy Kelly received 484 votes and Alec J. Rosen, who withdrew before the election, got 83 votes. In the Group IV Commission race, Walter Harris won with 806 votes, defeating Janet Launcelott, who received 383 votes, and Javier BaĂąos, who got 301 votes. Because of the Charter for the City of South Miami, the commissioner receiving the highest number of votes automatically becomes the new vice mayor, so Valerie Newman now holds that seat, formerly held by Brian Beasley. Following the election results and accepting congratulations from her friends and supporters, she stated her priorities for her new term in office. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I absolutely hope that we can address the budget issue and move the E.A.R. forward,â&#x20AC;? said Newman. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Those are the two major priorities of my life.â&#x20AC;? Philip Kraft Stoddard, a professor of biology at Florida International University, following the election results, spoke to the South Miami News regarding his reaction to being elected mayor and his goals for
the months ahead. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think I speak for the citizens here,â&#x20AC;? Stoddard said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are delighted to take our city back. We need to get the budget straightened out. We need to bring the city back together. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen division. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen divisiveness. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen race used as an issue to tear us apart. We need to pull the entire city back together again. We need to engage the citizens. We need to get everybody working together and everybody doing what they like to do. We have a lot of good citizens in this city who would love to be engaged and would love to help make this city a better place, and we need to put them to work. There are people in this city with special talents and special interests, and we need to invite them in. And not just the boards. We need to form all kinds of action and activity groups of people doing the things they love to do and the things they care about.â&#x20AC;? Also before voters in the election was Question 1, a charter amendment that would allow each of the commissioners, not just the mayor, to appoint members to city boards. That passed easily, with 1,037 â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yesâ&#x20AC;? votes to only 346 â&#x20AC;&#x153;Noâ&#x20AC;? votes. Of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 6,786 registered voters, only 1,562 cast ballots, less than one fourth of those eligible.

Community will miss Sorenson’s representation on commission R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Katy Sorenson recently announced that she will not run for reelection this fall, opening up the race to what will more than likely be a number of candidates running for her seat on the commission dais. We will miss her. Rare are the times I have disagreed with Sorenson’s position on an issue before our illustrious county commission. She has, more often than not, been on the minority side of a debate whether it is the expansion of the UDB (Urban Development Boundary), or the taxpayers financing the Marlins baseball stadium for a team owned by one of the wealthiest members of our community. A strong opposing voice is important. I hope that she will still be in her seat on the commission when the subject of spending $250 million of taxpayer money to put a roof on the football stadium comes up for
debate. I am quite sure she will vote “no” on the question. Katy has a progressive view of where our community should be heading and at the same time she always defends our precious tax dollars from being spent on projects that do not deserve our support. Sorenson announced her plans to join the University of Miami in developing a leadership initiative program that will encourage citizens who show a desire to seek public office. Many qualified citizens — individuals we would like to see as a commissioner or mayor of any of our municipalities, or fill a state or county office — would benefit from the program. The idea of developing a leadership initiative program for public service is exciting. The need surely exists. Commissioner Sorenson is more than qualified to head the program. The University of Miami will be supported financially by the Knight Foundation and the Dade Community Foundation in this endeavor. The idea of breaking into politics in Miami-Dade is daunting. The last candidate to successfully defeat a sitting county commissioner was Sorenson’s success-
–– VIEWPOINT –– ful race against then Commissioner Larry Hawkins 16 years ago. It is considered almost impossible to defeat a sitting commissioner. It seems only “death” or “indictment” can remove a commissioner. Current law permits a sitting county commissioner to run and hold his or her seat forever. Political action groups have been trying to convince voters to support term limits but the incumbents have been successful in defeating this initiative, with the financial help of Miami-Dade’s numerous lobbyists, to hang onto their seats. Sorenson will team with William Green, UM’s dean of undergraduate education, to develop the political support program in January 2011. I am most pleased to see that the University of Miami is expanding into a “local” political development program. In recent years the university has
been nationally recognized for its programs in the international arena. And, as important as a global outlook is concerned, we truly need to look inward at the needs of our local political community. It looks like the partnership of Sorenson and the university will meet that goal. We wish them success. We will miss your vote, Katy Sorenson, on the board of county commissioners. Califano, Jr. Chairman and President of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University. The event will take place at the Victor E. Clarke Education Center in South Miami Hospital on Thursday, February 18, from 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Califano, former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare started the nation’s first anti-smoking campaign and is the author of the new book, “How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid: The Straight Dope for Parents.” During the event, Califano will share almost 20 years worth of insight and research on what really prevents children from using drugs and alcohol and will help parents understand that they have the greatest influence on their children’s
decision to use drugs and alcohol. The presentation is based on his newly published Simon & Schuster Touchstone/Fireside book, which serves as a comprehensive, straightforward, usable guide to keeping children drug free during their formative pre-teen, teen and college years. IHOP’s free pancake giveaway to generate funds for charity BY TERRY WILLS
IHOP — one of America’s favorite restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner — has announced plans to serve millions of free pancakes again this year in celebration of National Pancake Day on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Planned as a celebration of friends, family and community, IHOP hopes the program will raise $1.75 million for Children’s Miracle Network, an international non-profit organization that supports children’s hospitals, and other worthy local causes. 2010 will mark IHOP’s fifth year celebrating the national event, and the company has set an ambitious goal to raise a cumulative $5 million for charity in the first five years of its free flapjack philanthropic effort. More than 1,400 IHOP restaurants throughout the United States once again will invite guests to enjoy a free short stack of IHOP’s signature buttermilk pancakes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on National Pancake Day. In return, IHOP guests are asked to donate what they would have paid for the free pancakes, or more, to the Children’s Miracle Network hospital in their community, or another designated local cause. “We are flipping for ‘five in five’ with our 2010 National Pancake Day campaign, and with our guests’ generous support, plan to reach our goal of $5 million in five years,” said Carolyn O’Keefe, IHOP’s sen-
ior vice president, marketing. “IHOP’s franchisees and guests have raised more than $3.25 million to support Children’s Miracle Network and other local charities since we started our National Pancake Day in 2006. Jeb Bush and South Miami Hospital’s Addiction Treatment Center to present an evening of “straight talk,” focusing on keeping children substancefree, with Joseph A. Califano Jr., chair and president of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University. The event will take place on Thursday, Feb. 18, 7-8:30 p.m., at the Victor E. Clarke Education Center in South Miami Hospital. Califano, former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, started the nation’s first anti-smoking campaign and is the author of the new book How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid: The Straight Dope for Parents. During the event, Califano will share almost 20 years worth of insight and research on what really prevents children from using drugs and alcohol, and will help parents understand that they have the greatest influence on their children’s decision to use drugs and alcohol. Ringworm (also known as tinea) is not a worm, but a kind of skin fungus that appears in a round-shaped itchy patch and has gradually outwards spreading borders. You can identify ringworm symptoms if you find circular patches on your skin that are reddish towards the border and paler in the center. Ringworm develops in a moist, tropical climate and exposure to damp soil and infected pets are often responsible for their spread. Ringworm is contagious in nature and if you use personal objects of an infected person, you can develop ringworm symptoms. Over-the-counter (OTC) topical antifungal creams are usually adequate for treatment of ringworm. While newer products containing terbinafine or butenafine are often recommended, older medications such as clotrimazole and miconazole may still be effective, but they may need to be used longer. Creams and solutions usually work better than sprays and powders, and solutions may be preferred for hairy areas. Because the infection usually extends further than the visible rash, it is good to apply the antifungal to the affected area and one to two inches beyond the rash. Terbinafine or butenafine need to be used for at least 1 to 2 weeks and clotri-

Monster Jam, the world’s premier monster truck series, will roll into Sun Life Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 20. This international racing series entertains more than 4 million fans annually, showing off its three main elements — The pit party, racing and freestyle. It was chilly outside, but smokin’ hot inside at the January grand opening of Smoke’t Southern Kitchen and Tap, located on S. Dixie Highway (US1) in the former JJ’s Diner space in Coral Gables. Co-owners Brandon Lurie, John Janette and Michael Altman, of the highly successful Town Kitchen and Bar in South Miami, opened their second neighborhood dining spot, giving locals a hip, down-to-earth setting where they can meet friends, watch sporting events and enjoy Southern eats that will satisfy every taste bud and budget. “The menu was really important to us,” said Altman who serves as executive chef. “We wanted to offer our customers sophisticated Southern food, which until now didn’t exist in this area. “After hundreds of tastings, we developed many Southern-inspired delicacies for our menu such as barbecue pork sushi rolls filled with coleslaw and served with a homemade spicy barbecue dipping sauce, pepper jack cheese-filled hushpuppies, and of course, ribs, brisket, and other items from the in-house smoker.” Smoke’t Southern Kitchen and Tap specializes in Southern pit barbecue, showcasing various regional flavors from the U.S. Order up the Texas style beef brisket, Kansas City baby back ribs, Memphis style dry rub spare ribs or Carolina pulled pork — all served with their award winning barbecue sauce. The music plays when the weekend rolls in. Robert M. Heuer, Florida Grand Opera general director and CEO, will be honored on Thursday, Feb. 25, with a Tribute Concert in the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami Dade County’s Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House, followed by a black-tie dinner on the Lynn Wolfson Stage, in celebration of his 25th anniversary as general director of Florida Grand Opera. Lynn Wolfson, arts philanthropist and director emeritus of Florida Grand Opera, is honorary chair of the Robert M. Heuer 25th Anniversary Tribute Concert and Dinner Committee and a major benefactor of the event. Jane A. Robinson, FGO board chair, and Dr. Morton J. Robinson, a member of the board of directors, are event chairs. Florida Grand Opera, founded in 1941, has been led by only three general directors in its 69 year history of continuous programming: founding general director Arturo di Filippi, Robert Herman, and Heuer, who assumed the leadership role in 1985, following six years with the company as director of production and, later, assistant general director. Under Heuer’s leadership, the company, then known as Greater Miami Opera Association, merged with the Opera Guild Inc. of Fort Lauderdale in 1994 to create Florida Grand Opera, which enabled the company to present its mainstage productions in both Miami and Fort Lauderdale. In 2006 Miami performances moved from Dade County Auditorium, where they had been given since 1951, to the Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House in the new Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami Dade County. Florida residents have something to cheer about during the month of February as the free annual pass promotion at Miami Seaquarium returns. In addition, the park has unveiled its new interactive stingray exhibit that allows guests the opportunity to feel the gentle glide of Southern and Cownose stingrays across their fingers. The free annual pass is available to Florida residents with the purchase of a one day general admission ticket through Feb. 28. The pass allows guests to visit the park as often as they wish through Dec. 31, including the extremely popular Easter Egg Hunts, Splashtacular Summer Events, Monster Splash Halloween Bash and Winter Nights & Lights. The pass has no blackout dates and is not combinable with any other offer or discount. LET’S TALK CARS The all-new 2010 GMC Terrain has a lot to get excited about. It’s a five-passenger crossover SUV with distinctive styling, and some new technology to deliver better gas mileage. The Terrain rides on a 112.5-inch wheelbase and has a four-wheel independent suspension system, with wide front and rear tracks for a better ride and handling. A new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection powers the Terrain and it gets an impressive 32 mpg on the highway. Maximum fuel economy is achieved in part with an “eco” mode activated by pressing a button on the console. A 3.0-liter DOHC 264 hp direct-injected V-6 engine is another option. Both engines are mated to sixspeed automatic transmissions and frontwheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models are offered in SLE and SLT trim levels. The Terrain is easy on the eyes with a balanced, athletic stance. It has angular sur-
faces and muscular fender flares, with a strong front-end characterized by squaredoff edges and a three-element grille accented by a chrome surround and projectorbeam headlamps mounted in large, rectangular housings. On the inside, the Terrain interior is comfortable and luxurious, with contrasting stitching and materials that create a quality look throughout the cabin. A floating center stack is highlighted by ambient lighting and houses the comfort and convenience controls. The Terrain also has an abundance of storage space, with numerous compartments suitable for a variety of items, including an oversized glove box, a closed storage area in the instrument panel above the center stack, another under the center armrest that is large enough for a laptop computer and two-tier storage in the doors. The seats are comfortable and the standard MultiFlex sliding rear seat can be moved fore or aft almost eight inches for more passenger comfort or greater rear cargo capacity. The 60/40-split rear seatback offers additional configurations for passengers and cargo. There also are four auxiliary power outlets in the rear cargo area. The Terrain comes with a lengthy list of
