olkswagens old and new once again filled historic Sunset Drive in South Miami as VolksBlast returned on January 31 for the 2010 installment of the annual car show. Classic beetles, VW buses and Karmann Ghias, 200 in all, shut down five blocks in the heart of the city from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Exhibitors, fans and casual spectators were able to mingle and view the popular German cars that have built up a cult following over the past half-century, while also enjoying a band playing live music, a dj, shopping for special VW items and memorabilia, a video arcade and other entertainment and activities.

Are you committed or just interested GM, Fitness Together Miami
BY SCOTT BAUMANN
If New Year’s didn’t inspire you, maybe the Winter Olympics have. If you are like most of us, motivation seems to come and go. It is hard to stay motivated all of the time, no matter what your goals are. This is especially true when it comes to our health and fitness goals. Sometimes
watching an exciting Olympic event or seeing the chiseled physique of an athlete can motivate us to get back into the game. Whether that means losing a few pounds or rebuilding some lost muscle, when motivation is high it is easy to get to the gym. But when that motivation fades, getting to the gym and working out can be just about the farthest thing from our minds. At times like that, it seems like just about everything else is more important. There is work to do, there are family obligations to attend to, dinner and drinks to have and
lots of television shows to watch. It has been said that when you are interested in something you do it when you feel like it, but when you are committed to something you do it no matter what. If you are serious about getting back into shape, you have to be committed to it and not just interested in it. Make the commitment to yourself that you will do whatever it takes. Determine what it will take to achieve the goal that you have in mind. For example, if

HealthMedPlus, one of South Florida’s leading providers of Integrative Medicine—the combining of Eastern/Oriental medicine and Western diagnostic testing— will be one of the featured exhibitors at the second annual Health and Fitness Expo on March 6 at The Shops at Sunset Place. The popular health and fitness fair takes place from noon to 6 p.m. Formerly known as Integrative Health Diagnostics, HealthMedPlus is under the direction of Luis Fuentes, D.O.M., L. Ac., a board licensed health care provider who has been recognized internationally as a leader in Integrative Medicine. “Eastern/Oriental medicine, which dates back thousands of years, is the oldest established medical system known to man,” said
Luis Fuentes ––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Fuentes, who has used his extensive experience to successfully treat patients with a wide variety of ailments. “By combining the best of Western diagnostics with proven, centuries old Eastern medicine, we can find the true cause of a patient’s health problem. This means treating
the root cause of the problem, not just the problem itself. And pills are rarely the answer.” According to Fuentes, once the root cause of the problem is discovered, HealthMedPlus designs a personalized wellness program for his patients. “This plan may include a custom medical nutrition program, a nutrient/vitamin plan that addresses specific deficiencies, lifestyle counseling and the Oriental arts, such as acupuncture and other proven physical therapies,” explained Fuentes, whose own unique ‘hands on’ style has earned him the classification as Distinguished Acupuncture Physician. “The customized direction we take depends on what the diagnostic testing reveals.” Most insurance is accepted at HealthMedPlus. For further information, call 305-412-0011.
The “Health and Fitness Expo presented by 3MedHealth” will also include health and fitness demonstrations, food samples, beauty makeovers, style presentations and much more. There will also be raffle drawings for various prizes, including 30-day passes to LA Fitness, beauty products and Sony Ericsson Open tickets. Event attendees will have the opportunity to receive free H1N1 influenza vaccines provided by the MiamiDade County Health Department; memory screening and information on detecting and supporting Alzheimer’s disease provided by The Alzheimer’s Association; and information on the risks of being overweight and body composition screenings provided by Fitness Challenge Program. “We are excited to participate in this effort to raise awareness for healthy living,” said Claudia Marquez, director of marketing and business development at The Shops at Sunset Place. “The Shops at Sunset Place is a great place to visit, shop and dine, but we also strive to be a resource by hosting educational and fun events that help better our community.” To receive more information about the event, contact Claudia Marquez at 305-663-0482 or send an email to <cmarquez@simon.com>.

FITNESS, from page 1 your goal is to lose fifteen pounds you must figure out how many days per week you are going to have to exercise to achieve that goal and what kind of other changes to your lifestyle you will have to make. How will you change your diet? What type of exercise will you do? If you don’t know the answers to these questions, consult with a fitness professional to help you determine exactly what you need to do and how long it will take to achieve your goals. Once you have determined what you will need to do, schedule those workouts in your calendar like a work appointment. These are not optional. Do not say things like “I’m going to try to go to the gym three times a week.” Say “I am going to go to the gym on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 6 p.m.” Be definite. GM, Chrysler, Ford — listen to the Pope, Sarkozy R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Protectionism is on the rise. Pope Benedict XVI stepped outside the realm of religion and criticized the management of Fiat for the announced plans to close manufacturing plants in Europe with the inferred intent of moving the Italian automaker out of Italy and Spain. Italians were thankful that a man of his stature was speaking out for the workers who will lose their jobs with the move. Objectors say the Pope isn’t an Italian. He lives in Rome, but represents Catholics around the world. Meanwhile, Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France, is objecting strongly to Renault’s intention to move the manufacturing of its autos out of France. Sarkozy is quoted as saying, “We’re not giving all that money to support the auto sector so that all our factories can leave to go abroad. I strongly contest the idea that these big
companies, just because they are global, no longer have a nationality.” The intent is to move from France to Turkey, a soon-to-be-member nation of the EU (European Union). This is a tougher argument for Sarkozy inasmuch as leaving France for another EU nation isn’t considered by many as “leaving the country.” Corporate management around the world will argue truthfully that their first obligation is to return a profit for its stockholders and if leaving a country is the best way to maximize profits, so be it. Unions could start a backlash by urging their countryman to stop buying cars that are manufactured outside their members’ country. What about General Motors, Ford and Chrysler? Their corporate managements have moved manufacturing to countries such as Mexico in search of “cheap” labor in an effort to keep the price of their autos competitive with those manufactured by foreign companies. GM’s argument could well be that their stockholders are not just Americans, but investors from almost every country in the world. Meanwhile, auto manufacturers such as Toyota have assembly plants in the United States stating that it is more cost effective
–– VIEWPOINT –– to “build” in the country that will buy their products as opposed to manufacturing in Japan and shipping across the Pacific. The counter argument to moving the manufacturing of any product — autos, refrigerators or a pair of shoes — to another country is that a nation whose only jobs are in the low-paying service industries can’t afford to buy the products that are made outside their country. It is hard to sling hamburgers at McDonalds and be able to buy a Lexus or a Cadillac. China is experiencing, albeit on a very small scale, the affects of industries moving to other countries to save labor costs. China has started losing clothing manufacturing plants to Southeast Asian countries where it is cheaper to put a Vietnamese or Cambodian behind a sewing machine. The move is so small that it hasn’t caused a
problem for China. But, if it continues to grow in scale, China will experience the same problems in years to come as the U.S., France and Italy are experiencing today. Protectionism is on the rise. The world is seeking an answer to the internationalism of the work force. The unions are protecting members’ jobs. The corporations are protecting their stockholders. And, politicians are seeking balance to keep getting reelected. We appreciate your opinions on this column whether in agreement or disagreement. SAVESO.COM is the only online coupon service that allows consumers to text coupons and special offers (“savies”) directly to their cell phone, thus reducing the hassle of cutting and carrying coupons or misplacing them. SAVESO.COM provides consumers with the best buys on the things they purchase most often. And because they specialize in the local market, SAVESO.COM offers the consumer savings and special offers at their favorite local restaurants, spas, boutiques and stores. “SAVESO.COM is the first online coupon site with a texting solution that emerged out of necessity,” said Rita Borbon, founder and the force behind SAVESO.COM. “As a mother of three young children, who is always on the go, I need a mobile, portable platform to virtually search and carry coupons. Cell phones are the perfect tool. And because you can email and forward coupons, using the service is the ideal way to share savings with friends and family during
these tough economic times.” The service provides local businesses an advertising platform to offer coupon discounts and special offers to the general public. The company’s site allows the consumer to either text the coupon to their cell phone or print them out. And it seems as if Borbon is onto something big; online coupon site visits were up 33 percent in October 2009, with 16 percent of shoppers saying that they don’t buy unless they can get savings. SAVESO.COM launched their service in Miami and Borbon plans to quickly expand to cover other major cities, including the Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville markets. Educational fair, screening for Jewish genetic diseases BY ROBERT HAMILTON
An educational fair and carrier screening is open to all Ashkenazi Jews, ages 18-44, on Sunday, Mar. 14, 10 a.m-2 p.m. at Temple Beth Am Yulman Campus, 5950 N. Kendall Dr. in Pinecrest. Jewish genetic diseases are a group of disorders that occur with higher frequency in the Jewish population. The Ashkenazi Jews, those whose ancestors were from Central and Eastern Europe (i.e. Poland, Russia, Germany, Lithuania, etc.) are at higher risk than the general population for several genetic diseases. This is primarily due to the fact that the Jewish communities in Europe were small and isolated, and members tended to marry within those communities. Since it is estimated that all individuals carry a small number of gene changes (called mutations), the ones present in those small groups of European Jews became
more prevalent in future generations. The event is open to students, single, engaged couples or or newly married. Reserve your spot today. A $25 pre-registration processing fee is required and space is limited. For test questions or to make a reservation, call Debbie Wasserman at 786897-9587. The mission of the Victor Center for Jewish Genetic Diseases at the University of Miami, led by its director, Dr. Deborah Barbouth, is to raise awareness of Jewish genetic diseases and to provide affordable genetic counseling and screening for healthy individuals at risk of being carriers of a gene mutation for at least one of these diseases. This is accomplished through Jewish community education programs and college campus outreach. JohnMartin’s to host annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration
If you miss out on the St. Patrick’s Day fun you might be “green” with envy. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY ERIKA ARRIOLA
It’s that time of the year to bring out your best green outfit because the St. Patrick’s Day celebration returns on Wednesday, Mar. 17. JohnMartin’s Restaurant & Irish Pub in Coral Gables will host South Florida’s favorite Irish tradition, the 20th annual St. Patrick’s Day Street Fair with live music from UV — The U2 Tribute Show. The street fair begins at 5 p.m. along Salzedo Street and Aragon Avenue and is free to the public. “Commemorating St. Patrick’s Day is something that goes beyond our typical celebrations; it’s the Irish way of life to care, to sing, to celebrate together with our friends, family and community,” said Martin Lynch, proprietor of JohnMartin’s. “This annual party provides an opportunity for people of all ages to gather and celebrate this great tradition. Most importantly, it will benefit the Coral Gables Rotary Club.” The evening will begin with live Irish music by Paddy Kelleghan and The Rolling C’s, followed by rock tunes with the Hard Liquor Band. UV—The U2 Tribute Show, will take the stage at 9 p.m. and delight the crowd with the U2 live concert experience, playing the hits and classics that have made U2 one of the biggest bands in the world and Ireland’s No. 1 musical export.
The restaurant will feature a traditional St. Patrick’s Day menu with smoked salmon, Gaelic steak, Irish stuffed chicken, corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, bangers and mash, Irish potato soup, bread and butter pudding, and homemade Bailey’s ice cream for dessert. Along the street, crowds can enjoy fish and chips, chicken tenders, corn beef sandwiches, hotdogs, and Irish beverages. In addition, JohnMartin’s will donate a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Coral Gables Rotary Club. The Rotary Club is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in their local communities and around the world. JohnMartin’s has been continually recognized for its cuisine by publications that voted the restaurant “Best Pub Food.” The restaurant features live entertainment Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, from Contemporary Top 40 hits to rock to today’s popular Irish ballads. It also has the Comedy Night on Thursday nights beginning at 10 p.m., featuring professional stand-up comedian Freddy Stebbins. JohnMartin’s is located at 253 Miracle Mile. South Florida’s new Crohn’s and Colitis Care Center On January 18th, 2010, Gastroenterology Care Center launched a new medical center of excellence, the “Crohn’s and Colitis Care Center”, with an educational program lead by Board Certified Physician, James Leavitt, MD at its main location at Galloway Medical Center. The event was a success and attended by patients, friends, and family members eager to learn more about Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis treatment and management options. Dr. Leavitt, a national speaker and governor of the American College of Gastroenterology, presented important information about the state of healthcare quality, access, and how it relates to patients with the debilitating disease of Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis. According to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), it is estimated that as many as one million Americans have inflammatory bowel disease -- with that number evenly split between Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Dr. Leavitt spoke enthusiastically and very knowledgably about the newest technology and treatments available to patients. “Our group started the Crohn’s and Colitis Care Center in order to fulfill our mission and assist patients who are diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease,”
said James Leavitt, MD, Director of the Crohn’s and Colitis Care Center. “Our team of board certified physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nutritionists, and infusion nurses combine their clinical expertise and experience to provide patients with a unique setting dedicated to the care of IBD patients under one roof”. Along with speaking of medical advances, Dr. Leavitt introduced the team members to the new Crohn’s and Colitis Care Center. Benefits to its members include a priority access phone line, support groups, nutritional advice, a website with IBD educational content, a patient web portal, and additional benefits. At the end of the presentation, attendees took advantage of the opportunity to sign up to become members and toured the newly remodeled office that now includes a state-of-the-art imaging center with CT and Ultrasound, as well as in-office IV infusion for Remicade treatments. Gastroenterology Care Center is a division of GastroHealth, PL, a single-specialty medical group comprised of 26 physicians with practices throughout Miami-Dade. Infiniti M is a luxury sedan with style and performance Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Infiniti M sedan is in the fifth year of its second-generation design and it continues as an outstanding example of a mid-size premium sedan. The Infiniti M emphasizes performance and user-focused technology, and offers a wide selection of engine, driveline and equipment choices. There’s also a spacious cabin wrapped in a sporty exterior, coupled with a marvelous driving experience. The 2010 Infiniti M is available in M35 and M45 models, each offered in rear-wheel drive or with Infiniti’s advanced Intelligent AllWheel Drive system. The Infiniti M45 and M45x AWD come with a 325-hp 4.5-liter V8, while the M35 and M35x AWD are powered by a 303-hp 3.5-liter V-6 (17/25 mpg). A special Sport Package (rear-wheel drive models only) adds a higher level of performance, with an advanced Rear Active Steer system, sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch wheels and tires, and unique body treatments. Every 2010 Infiniti M utilizes an enhanced
next-generation FM (Front Mid-ship) platform also used on the sibling G37 Sedan, G37 Coupe, EX35 and FX premium crossover SUV. The refined FM platform positions the engine behind the front axle for an optimized front-to-rear weight balance, which factors in weight transfer during driving maneuvers. The Infiniti M really is a nice blend of luxury and sport styling, with an expressive grille and crystal-look headlight clusters, large aluminum-alloy wheels, low profile tires, and a stable, wide-track posture for a dynamic look. The M’s low hoodline flows into anchored shoulders and a fluid roofline, contributing to the sporty silhouette. Infiniti M models equipped with the optional Sport Package also have unique front and rear bumpers, headlight color, side sills and 19inch wheels and tires. The Infiniti M’s long wheelbase and short overhangs allow for a roomy interior and sporty exterior dimensions. Wide front and rear tracks add to handling stability, while the overall width enhances interior and trunk space. The M also has lightweight body components, including aluminum-alloy inner and outer door panels, hood and decklid panels. Inside, the interior design combines a driver-oriented cockpit with luxury and detail. The instrument panel has “Fine Vision” elec-

troluminescent gauges, “gear-like” rings on the instrument cluster meters and unique aluminum trim surface texturing. Other interior highlights include a large center console, wood trim, climate-controlled front seats, standard XM Satellite Radio and options such as heated power reclining rear seats. The 2010 M continues as a showcase of Infiniti’s technology, including Intelligent Cruise Control and the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems, an advanced
Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System with touch-screen, a 9.3GB Music Box hard drive for digital music storage and playback, and available XM NavTraffic. Base price on our 2010 Infiniti M35 test car was $45,800. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers.
