SOMI for Haiti, Saturday, March 13

Red Sunset Merchant Association community relief effort, SOMI for Haiti, will take place on Saturday, March 13th, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown South Miami, and residents and businesses are being asked to take part. Everyone can make a difference for the millions of Haitians urgently in need of life saving services. The goal of the event is to have the community come together to collect donations of food, water, medical supplies, and money for Haiti relief efforts. Brandon Lurie of the Richard-Brandon Company, a South Miami based real estate development firm, explained the significance of the event. “We want to get the community involved,” said Lurie last week. “When the earthquake took place, I was thinking of ways to try to help the Haitian people, and as an individual it’s very hard to do anything large and meaningful, so I came up with the idea of getting the whole community involved. I also wanted to get everyone

r. Armando Bardisa of South Miami Pharmacy was awarded with an Honorary MBA from Florida International University's Chapman Graduate school of Business. Brian Brito, South Miami Pharmacy's VP of operation presented him with this prestigious honor. for Haiti” and “Save Haiti Saturday.” Project Medishare was founded in 1994 by Dr. Barth Green and Dr. Art Fournier and is dedicated to “sharing its human and technical resources with its Haitian partners in the quest to achieve quality healthcare and development services for all.” This mission includes a continuing commitment to sustainable health programs such as operation of clinics and hospitals, employment of rural health agents, and training of Haitian physicians, nurses and health professionals. Save Haiti Saturday started out as a grassroots effort by a group of friends from Miami and Haiti and has now turned into a collaboration of hundreds of people around the country from all walks of life, all working together for one cause: to save as many lives as humanly possible in earthquake ravaged Haiti. Athletes Relief Fund for Haiti, cofounded by NBA legend Alonzo Mourning and Miami HEAT all-star Dwyane Wade, has received pledges

totaling more than $800,000 from the sports community since its unique inception. Mourning and Wade launched the initiative with the intent to form a united front within the world of professional sports and to rally collective support to fund immediate relief efforts. Besides individual donations, merchants in the RSMA area will be offered an opportunity to join the RSMA with half of the membership fee being contributed to one of the participating charities. In addition, the participating merchants will have the opportunity to become part of the “Save Haiti Saturday” drive by contributing 2 percent of the March 13 gross sales to the participating charities with all proceeds going to Haiti earthquake victim relief to be distributed through the RSMA. “The merchants in the Red Road and Sunset area are caring, community minded people,” said Amy Donner, President of the RSMA. “The response support for this effort was instantaneous.” All donations are tax deductible and everyone is being invited to turn out for a great, worthwhile cause. Jakhari Gore wins this year’s Nick Kodys Award Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB The Nick Kodys Aw a r d, named for Coral Gables High School’s legendary football coach, is voted on by area coaches and awarded to Miami-Dade County’s best football player. Every year, the Coral Gables Kiwanis Club then arranges an awards affair to present the trophy and celebrate the accomplishments of the payer selected. This year’s award winner, J a k h a r i G o re, is the best player ever to play for Columbus High, according to his Football Coach C h r i s M e r r i t t . He is not only a SuperPrep All American but is also listed as the #6 all-purpose RB in the Country by Rivals.com. The audience attending the award dinner enjoyed watching many of the highlights of Gore’s career on a large screen television. Coach Merritt noted that while he gained 4,666 yards rushing and made 64 touchdowns in his prep career, that those amazing stats are misleading. It seems they had to take Gore out of the game early on numerous occasions so as not to run up the score. In fact, Coach calculated that Jakhari had cumulatively been taken out a total amounting to 8 games. Adding to the evening’s excitement was the appearance for former award winner, Coral Gables High and UM star, F r a n k G o re, now playing in the pros, who is Jakhari’s cousin. Frank Gore is the only player in the history of the award to win two years in a row, 1999 and 2000. Helping orchestrate the event were Kiwanis President Bill A d a m s , Past

In other news, close to 100 high profile female philanthropists joined forces with top community and college leaders at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables to raise funding for student scholarships at F l o r i d a I n t e r n a t i o n a l U n i v e r s i t y ’s H e r b e r t We r th eim C olleg e of Med icine ( HW CO M) . The luncheon featured presentations from Founding D e a n J o h n R oc k, M . D ., and Executive Associate D e a n f o r S t u d e n t Af f a i r s S a n f o r d M a r k h a m, M . D . , as well as several medical students who benefit from scholarships. Dr Rock noted that a recent study by the M a c y F o un da t i on shows that medical students who graduate with little or no debt are more likely to become primary care physicians – an area of critical need in our community. The fashion portion of the affair included informal modeling of local designer Victoria Lopez Cas tro’s spring 2010 collection. Sponsors included Northwestern Mutual Financial Network and Victoria Lopez C a s t ro. The PR sponsor was R o a r Media. Finally, congratulations to all the Canadians in our reading audience on the incredibly exciting Winter Olympics. While the US racked up the most medals, Canada reined supreme with Gold. Congress: For the people or for political parties? R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY I have been following Washington, DC, politics for many years. Never have I seen our elected officials more concerned about the preservation of their political parties or for the preservation of their “careers,” than we are experiencing with the current bunch of elected officials in Washington. It is pathetic! Members of Congress are of the opinion that we have sent them to Washington so that they might have a high-paying job, unbelievably good health insurance and a guaranteed pension that puts our Social Security to shame. No, Mr. or Ms. Elected Official, we elected you to represent us, to run our country in our best interest while we go about our lives earning a living, raising our children and looking forward to a secure retirement. If we elected our officials solely to guarantee them that they might have a secure job we would elect

ourselves to the position. The average elected official in Washington would vote for the devil if he or she thought it would preserve their political party — be they Democrat or Republican. They do not see that that we, the voters, recognize the self-interest that abides in the halls of Congress. The problem is that our disgust for the actions of our elected officials seems to disappear when we vote. Only 36 percent of the surveyed voters are happy with the actions of our current Congress. If this anger was carried into the voting booth we would replace most elected officials in Congress. Two things keep them at their jobs. First, the amount of dollars thrown into the typical election campaign masks the flaws of the candidate and shows only the side they wish us to see. Second, the prevailing feeling is that the “next” elected official won’t be any better than the one we are replacing. We dumbly go to the polls and return them to office. When Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts died and the state elected a Republican to fill the seat held by a Democrat for 47 years, the whole political system in Washington seemed to fall apart. The Democratic hold on the Senate and the

–– VIEWPOINT –– ability to prevent a filibuster disappeared. Conservative Democrats realized that they now had an opportunity to speak out as their votes are needed even more by the White House. Liberal-leaning Republicans realized that they could cross party lines on a specific issue and still remain a Republican. Newly elected Sen. Scott Brown, Kennedy’s replacement, seems to vote with logic rather than strictly along party lines when he recently voted for the Jobs Bill, a strongly supported Democratic issue. We need more men and women who put our country first to break this unbelievable allegiance to their political party. It is amazing that our elected officials don’t see that we, the voters, identify loyalty to country over loyalty to the political party when it is displayed by an elected official. You think they would want to emulate,

rather than convert, back to the party line. Our nation is deeply in debt. We are fighting endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. 40-plus million Americans are without healthcare. Unemployment is over 10 percent; the man on the street feels that his children’s future will not be as good as his. This is deplorable. We are losing faith in the system. It is time for selfinterest to leave the minds of our Congress and work toward a bi-partisan solution to the problems facing our nation.

As the Saints and the Colts prepared to play in the most anticipated game of the year, Steven and Sophie Rojas Tallon, husband and wife owners of Yummy Cakes and More put on their “game faces” to compete in the NFL Super Bowl Tailgate Cake Contest on Sunday. Sophie and her assistants decorated their cake with a detailed interpretation of the football field and placed second. The competition took place at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens as part of the Super Bowl XLIV Festivities. Yummy Cakes and More is quickly becoming well known in South Florida for great tasting treats and amazing cake designs. Sophie was inspired to bake by her mother, and the original plan was to create cakes and other desserts for friends and family during the holidays. Eventually, her hobby turned into a fullblown specialty bakery creating custom cakes and more for businesses, schools, and special occasions. Recently, Steven encouraged his wife to put her “yummy” expertise to the test by entering into the NFL Super Bowl cake contest. “Yummy Cakes and More was honored to participate in a cake decorating contest at the Super Bowl, and we are, of course,

more thrilled to be place second in a competition with such talented people,” said Steven Rojas Tallon, CEO. “We make it a priority to work just as hard on taste as we do on the art of our cakes, and this was an opportunity to prove that to a larger crowd. It was truly a fun-filled cake competition.” Yummy Cakes and More was literally inspired by “Mom’s homemade cookies.” As a child, Sophie Rojas Tallon would watch her mother bake cookies to earn money during the holidays. In 2000, Sophie asked if she could use her mother’s cookie recipe to do the same. This little project would soon take on a new direction. There’s been a lot of sad and disturbing news about horses in the media in recent months, but Community Newspapers received a bit of “glad” news when the Eagleton family of Palmetto Bay shared with us the story of their “horse saving endeavor.” The Eagletons had just acquired a new horse for their daughter, Kate. He is a 3-year old thoroughbred, retired from horseracing at Gulfstream, who was brought to their barn to be boarded and then abandoned there. Luckily the owner of Coconut Palm

Equestrian Center, Julie Grennan, has a heart of gold and let them keep him there as they took on the project of training, nurturing and putting weight on the horse. During a vet check, it was discovered that he had a pin in his knee from surgery to repair a knee bone break — the most common bone broken in these thoroughbred racehorses. After four months of hard work and love the horse, “Trey,” was in much better shape and Kate showed him in his very first show ever at Tropical Park recently and got Reserve Champion in her division. Good news is always worth waiting for.

I am asked this question everyday. Not everyone is going to have the same alternatives. However, understanding your options is the first step to saving your home and your sanity. Is a Loan Modification for me? The Making Homes Affordable Plan is President Obama’s loan modification plan that helps homeowners who are struggling to make their monthly mortgage payment stay in their homes. This plan requires lenders to reduce monthly payments to no more than 31 percent of the homeowner’s monthly income. The first step in this plan is to lower the interest rate of the loan—sometimes as low as 2%. Second, if the mortgage payment is still too high with the reduced interest, then the loan may be extended to a 40 year term. Third, if the monthly payment is still not affordable, then there may be a reduction of the principal of the loan. Is a loan modification what you need? It is if you want to keep your home. I see loan modifications being given every day, allowing homeowners to stay in the home they have worked so hard to keep. Why do I need to defend my foreclo sure with an attor ney? Once you are given a complaint to foreclose, take that complaint to an attorney so legal responses can be given to the complaint. The response should be specific to each point/count made in the complaint; and affirmative defenses should be formulated for your individual case. The attorney you hire should know foreclosure law, mortgage law and how to properly prepare and answer the foreclosure complaint. If you fail to answer appropriately you risk your right to bring any affirmative defenses against the lender. Do you need to defend against a foreclosure? If you want to save your home and your credit, the answer is yes. Even if you are working on a loan modification, are in the middle of a short sale,

or simply want to avoid foreclosure on your credit you must take legal action to prevent the foreclosure process. uld I aggreee to a shorr t saalee and leavee Shou me? my hom If you want to throw the towel in or you do not qualify for a loan modification, then a short sale is a good option. A short sale is when a lender accepts less than what you owe on the property and agrees to the sale of your home. With a short sale, you need to find a realtor experienced in short sales; and an attorney who can properly negotiate the short sale with your lender. The short-sale process is similar to a loan modification and must be properly executed so as not to delay the closing and ultimately lose the interested buyer. Should I file Bankr uptcy? If so, when and which Chapter should I file? Bankruptcy is a perfectly legitimate way to stop foreclosure, put an end to lawsuits, protect paychecks from garnishment, and regain control of your financial situation. However, this should be your final option after having tried reaching a loan modification, you have defended your foreclosure with a real estate attorney and time is ticking towards the foreclosure sale date of your house. In the Chapter 7 Bankruptcy there is no loan modification option and if you stop paying your mortgage you could lose your home. In the Chapter 13 Bankruptcy you can save your house and you are given time to pay off your debt. Do not lose hope. Changes and new programs are being offered to help homeowners every day. Even though this is a time of great challenge, do not forget the true meaning of life—the love of your family, the beautiful children you may have and the beautiful place you live in. What can be done about those pesky tree roots that grow above ground? Roots belong underground, right? Most of the time, yes. And most of the time, if a plant’s roots are exposed to light, they’ll grow away from it and go back into the ground or mulch to protect themselves from that light. So why do some tree roots grow at or above the soil surface where they can trip people, mess up equipment, buckle sidewalks and driveways, look out-of-place and unattractive, and generally drive homeowners and grounds managers to cover, smother or chop them? The thing is, roots are opportunistic – growing wherever they find soil with adequate space, oxygen, water and nutrients. If they hit something they can’t penetrate, like the “coral” rock bed of South Florida they will be deflected and grow in the first 6 to 12 inches of available top soil. That’s how roots of many trees here in Miami end up growing on the surface. So what to do about above-ground roots? The first thing to remember is that the root system of the tree is its source of

nutrition and provides support for the tree. Simply hacking away at the offending above-ground roots can kill the tree or cause the tree to actually fall over causing major damage. A quick fix is to add a layer of top soil and then mulch the area to level it out. Or, instead of fighting the tree’s above-ground growth, utilize the roots as an interesting landscape feature by planting flowering shrubs among the roots. If the tree roots are causing problems and need to be removed, you should contact a certified arborist. This professional can selectively remove offending roots. 1800s bigamy trial inspires Florida author’s first book BY KATIE RUDKIN

Florida author Johanna Moran made her literary debut in February with The Wives of Henry Oades (A Ballantine Trade Paperback Original). More than 50 years ago, Moran’s father, a law student, came across an abstract about the case of Henry Oades, a man who faced persecution for bigamy in San Francisco in the late 1800s. The story fascinated two generations — her father and mother, and now Moran. She used it to inspire her novel, an unforgettable page-turning drama that explores the intricacies of marriage, the construction of family, the changing world of the late 1800s, and the strength of two remarkable women. As the novel opens, Henry Oades accepts an accountancy post in New Zealand and subsequently moves his wife, Margaret, and their children to exotic Wellington. Their new home is rougher and more rustic than they expected — and then a single night of tragedy shatters the family when the native Maori stage an uprising, kidnapping Margaret and her children. Curves of Miami is encouraging women in the area to show their philanthropic strength by participating in the annual Curves Food Drive. And, even though donating food to families in need is its own reward, the club is offering compelling incentives for both existing and potential members who participate. Now through Mar. 31, Curves of Miami is collecting non-perishable items and monetary donations for food banks in the local area. The goal, according to Jeannie Borsanyi of Curves of Miami, is for the community to come together to help families in need. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the core of our business is the message that women are stronger when they rally together, and that is the point we hope to bring home with our food drive,â&#x20AC;? Borsanyi said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to show our community just how powerful the generosity of our members can be.â&#x20AC;? Borsanyi said members who donate a bag of groceries or make a minimum donation of

$30 during the month of March will receive a reusable Curves grocery freezer bag for free. Non-members who do likewise between Mar. 8 and 20 can join Curves for free. Curves will waive the cost to join. Borsanyi said that as part of this effort, Curves of Miami will be participating in a company-wide contest for the most food drive donations collected by Curves locations across the nation. Winners will receive one of several cash prizes to be donated to their local food bank. Each year, Curves locations collectively donate millions of pounds of food to feed the hungry. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We hope women in the Miami area will come together and participate in this initiative,â&#x20AC;? LET’S TALK CARS The Nissan Altima Coupe has been a hit with U.S. consumers since it was introduced three years ago. Its sporty styling, jackrabbit power and exceptional handling have made it especially popular with younger consumers who really have no need for four doors on a car and a roomy back seat. For 2010, the Altima Coupe gets new exterior styling, three new exterior colors, refined interior fabrics, a new available red leather-appointed interior color and revised option package content. The Coupe is available in four levels — a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine and an equipped 2.5 S; a 3.5-liter V-6 engine (18/27), and an equipped 3.5 SR. Each level is offered with a choice of a six-speed manual transmission or Nissan’s advanced Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). The Coupe’s styling changes include a

revised hood, grille and front bumper, along with new projector beam headlights and standard 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Altima 3.5 SR models have standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with Michelin P235/45R18 tires. The Coupe’s exterior design definitely stands out from other cars in its class. It is nicely proportioned and has a sensual, flowing design, with a shorter wheelbase, shorter overall length and lower height than its sibling Sedan. It’s smaller and lighter overall, which gives it a sportier driving feel, an important element for the more performance-oriented and youthful coupe buyers. The front-wheel drive Altima Coupe rides on Nissan’s advanced D platform and has a 105.3-inch wheelbase, four inches shorter than the Sedan. Overall length is 180.9 inches — 10 inches less than the Sedan — and it has a two-inch lower profile at 55.9 inches. The two cars share only a common hood, with all other panels, grille, headlights and rear combination lights unique to the Coupe. Twin chrome exhaust tips with unique taillights distinctively mark the rear. Inside, the 2010 Altima Coupe has revised interior fabrics and finishers, a new
