so educational! BY MICHAEL MILLER <Michael@communitynewspapers.com> Some folks say that Vice Mayor Beasley has learned some very valuable lessons recently. With packages of pubic documents being sent to investigative agencies about his couple of marriages, his mortgages and his finances surrounding his last election, he is sure to be feeling the heat. But I wonder what lessons he’s learning and I just can’t imagine the stress that he is going through. A couple of weeks ago, he was in Tallahassee trying to defend his financial documents surrounding his 2008 campaign reports and from what our not so reliable sources told me, he was just babbling away, complaining about the local media and what it might do should he be found guilty of

embers of the Red Sunset Merchants Association gathered in Splitsville at the Shops at Sunset for the March 10 meeting. Approximately 40 business men and women attended the regular monthly meeting to network and hear guest speaker Guy Revelle, the co-founder and CEO of Splitsville, who talked about his hopes to stage a big New Year’s Eve party on Sunset Drive less than a year from now.

any charges that were brought forth by a concerned citizen. Brian in his own way looked, according to our sources, teary eyed about not reporting some $500 that he allegedly paid out in cash to drivers— you know — the ones that drove voters to the polls during the 2006 election. Well, I hear he’s going to get a fine and a public record that will surely follow him around for a while. And by the way, I hear that the state attorney just might be waiting to see if the city/CRA purchases a piece of property that was listed by a real estate agent (who happens to be a commissioner) before it decides if there were any criminal actions. I hear that the ethics commission does not have to have the same evidence that the state attorney needs to file ethics violations and getting a conviction is much easier than if they were criminal charges. So, I wonder what they might think of what’s going in our fair city. Golly, I can’t figure out which one of these potential scenarios just might cause this public official to refrain from taking the many many thousands of dollars in sales commission that he would earn should this sale go through. Now if I were he, I’d give up my real estate commission and avoid even

the slightest hint of impropriety but heck, what do I know? Sign of the times. Went to the last commission meeting and after the perfunctory “Hello’s” and whatnot I went home (way out of the city.) And being the curious type I went over to my trusty computer, and proceded to type out: <www.cityofsouthmiami.net> and found Channel 77 and bingo, there was the City of South Miami Commission Meeting in live streaming video. It wasn’t perfect but it was marvelous. Sitting at home having a great time watching the commission meeting and talking with W.D. on my cell phone as he was watching it on his TV. We were having a great time hollering at one another, laughing at ourselves, as we dissected each word that was spoken by our beloved elected officials. As we watched, my good friend, the Mayor, Horace Feliu (I hate when people start it off like that, because you know what’s coming), after being pushed around like a soccer ball at a championship game, finally did the Dirty and said “that’s it, she’s out of here,” and got the police to escort Sharon McCain out of the chambers. Feliu and Beckman lead the way to ruin newly elected Valerie Newman’s day when she tried to get the city to dump the previously approved development plan that the city had with the developer of the First National Bank of South Miami prop-
erty. Attorney Jerry Proctor and Stan Price represented the developer, and it was reiterated many times by the city attorney that if there is a some problem, that the agreement calls for the city to notify the developer in writing and that the developer has 60 days to fix the problem. And no matter how many times and how many ways the 60 day clause was brought forth, Vice Mayor Beasley and Commissioner Newman were dumb stuck, or perhaps they were just deaf, as they just didn’t want to hear anything that wasn’t going to kill the deal. Even Jay Beckman pointed out very clearly if there was a problem, the deal was that they had 60 days to fix it and as he pointed out that there was no evidence of a problem. But sound minds, and I say that loosely, prevailed with Feliu, Beckman and Palmer voting to keep the agreement intact. It’s interesting to see how Commissioner Beckman is positioning himself for the upcoming election. He was able to, figuratively speaking, get to the right of Beasley and Newman and make the two of them look like they are out of touch and voilá; Jay looks like a mayoral candidate. And lest I forget, Beasley and Newman also make Commissioner Palmer look marvelous. So, many thanks for the
Magazine and publisher John Edward Smith, who has served on the Board of Directors for Informed Families. Sponsored by Informed Families, the South Miami Drug-Free Coalition works with schools, law enforcement, business, health care, parents, faith leaders, media and others to reduce drug and alcohol use among area youth. Among its upcoming activities, the coalition is launching a “Sticker Shock” campaign to label multipacks of beer and wine coolers with stickers reminding adults that it is illegal to provide alcohol to anyone under age 21. It is also working in the schools, particularly at the high school level, to change attitudes and behavior among students about alcohol use. In the coming months, the coalition will undertake a study of the city’s alcohol policies in an effort to reduce access by youth. Margaret Sotham, director of the South Miami Drug-Free Coalition, said such broad support for the King Pins Challenge signals that the community understands the threat of teen alcohol and substance use and is ready to take a stand against it. “We need all members of the community to come together to create lasting change that helps kids lead safe, healthy, drug-free lives,” Sotham said. “Our King Pins – our titans of business, government and the
community – really are leading the way.” General admission tickets, known on the field of battle as “Jousting Spectator Ticket,” are $20/pp, which includes a buffet and non-alcoholic beverages. Tickets may be purchased by calling 305856-4886 or online at <www.informedfamilies.org>.

Dorfman and Sorgie honored by Rotary Club in South Miami Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB Two individuals who have contributed much to the South Miami community through the years were honored by the Rotary Club of South Miami on Thursday, February 19, during a reception hosted at the First National Bank of South Miami and sponsored by the Shops at Sunset Place. Karen Dorfman and John Sorgie were named charter members of the new Stellar Support Society established by the South Miami Rotary Art Festival committee to recognize individuals who have given long term service to the success of this event. Dorfman and Sorgie have been deeply involved in the show since its inception in 1984, when Sorgie inaugurated the show during his presidency of the Red/Sunset Merchants Association. It was a magical night for the guests of the opening night for Les Misérables at Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, the first regional production of the most celebrated musical of all time and the longest running musical worldwide. Artistic Director
Barbara Stein and Dr. Lawrence Stein at opening night party for Les Miserables.
David Arisco recruited some of Miami and the country’s best talent for a show that will long be remembered as a crowning achievement for this award winning theatre. In the role of Jean Valjean, David Felty’s remarkable voice is one that touches one’s very soul. In fact, his performance earned show stopping applause while the entire cast received a long standing ovation following the opening night show. Complementing him was a cast of more than 30 actors who could have as easily been on Broadway as right here in South Florida. Trent Blanton (Javert), Gary Marachek (Thenardier), Melissa Minyard (Fantine), Christopher Myers (Marius), Gwen Hollander (Eponine), Patrick Jones (Enjoras), Margot Moreland (Madame Thenardier) and Nikka Wahl (Cosette) were but a few of the cast making this show an experience you will not want to miss. The gala opening night festivities on March 6, included a pre-performance dinner courtesy of Ortanique, a bar provided by Bacardi and dessert after the chow provided by Crepe Maker. On hand were many VIPs, season tickets holders and important sponsors all of whom enable Executive Producing Director Barbara Stein and Actors’ to bring shows like this to South Florida. Les Miserables will run through April 5. For tickets, call 305-444-9293. Thanks to major sponsor Bear-A-Bear as well as Coral Gables Woman’s Club, Coral Gables Chamber, and Claire Flanagan Whitehurst, top graduating elementary school students will be honored at a breakfast recognition event to be held March 25th, at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. The Hyatt has been that is once again hosting the event. Event organizer, Joan Reitsma, of The Giving Tree, is pleased to have funding to invite students from several schools to this wonderful affair that will feature Gables Chamber President Mark Trowbridge as a guest speaker. The event is organized through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation and all donations to the event are tax deductible. This event as well as another recognition breakfast in April honoring top graduating middle and senior high schools is dependent on private funding. Those interested in supporting this event should call Joan Reitsma at 305-445-3967. The 41st Annual University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame Banquet will be

The Class of 2009 includes Edgerrin James, Tim James, Aubrey Huff, Warren Bogle, Davian Clark, Mike Sullivan and Cathy Morse Further south, the Community Foundation of Pinecrest (CFP) has launched its new website: cfofp.org. Designed by local attorney and IT guru, Richard Stern, the site is also hosted pro bono by Dan Scipione and Camteq. CFP board member Hank Langston and Gulliver Schools was one of the recent sponsors of the Taste of Pinecrest held March 8 at Pinecrest Gardens, an event organized by the Pinecrest Business Association with Kendall Toyota. Gulliver Schools gra-
ciously provided their sponsor table for this new Community Foundation of Pinecrest to give away free balloons to children and promote the Foundation mission’s of serving the community. Thousands enjoyed a day of great food with dozens of restaurants and caterers on hand with a variety of food options, while sponsors entertained with games and a field of great rides was enjoyed by the children. Certainly a great success and the perfect way to end a glorious South Florida weekend. Until next week, keep making each day count. Keeping up with what’s happening in our community is quite a challenge and I am certain there are many activities I miss. newest entertainers up there every other Tuesday; they keep us all smiling. Saturday morning around 7:30, I met real estate guru Chip Black for breakfast at Casa Lario’s and as I pulled into a parking spot out front—you know, the places where the parking meters stare right at you — I said to myself, well, I don’t have any change, so I’ll play the cat and mouse game with the parking meter reader lady and when she appears I’ll leap out of my chair and jam that quarter into the meter. Or so I thought, and as things would have it, Chip and I became so involved in our bantering that I forgot about the meter. And of course I got one of those $18 tickets from our City Of Pleasant Living meter reader ladies. Yes, it’s my fault, I could have pulled in to the restaurant’s parking lot on the side of the building, but I didn’t. So, folks, pay the meter or else. My wife, Susan and I went out to dinner at Khoury’s on SW 73 Street. Gotta tell ya, Maroon and his family took great care of us AGAIN. The food is marvelous, the friendly family atmosphere is a big attraction for me and of course, the service keeps me coming back for more. If you’re in the mood for a very, very nice experience, try Khoury’s. I’m sure you will be happy too. While out and about Saturday night, ran into Commissioner Jay Beckman and his very tall son, Jason. As my wife and I strolled down the street I looked across the street and I thought I saw former commissioner Randy Wiscombe. Okay, here are some more local business people that would love to take to care of you: MacDonald Imperial Dry Cleaners. One block north of Sunset Drive and South Dixie Highway. This place has been around for many decades and how is that possible, you might ask? Well for starters, the service they provide is top notch. They can take care of not only your top tier clothing, but also your regular clothes. The location is wonderful and lots of your

According to Revelle, the event would rival the celebrations held in other cities around the country and be a big boost to South Miami. Splitsville Luxury Lanes and Dinner Lounge with its 13 lanes and full-scale restaurant and bar brought a new level of sophistication to the City of Pleasant Living and seemed the perfect setting to discuss the future of local business development as well as
enjoy its upscale atmosphere. Revelle also revealed plans to open another South Florida location in the near future. Great food was provided by Splitsville for the meeting. Killing the half-cent transit tax increase is a dream R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY It took long enough for our county administrators and county commissioners to come around and admit to us, the taxpayers, that we aren’t going to see any public transit improvements that we were promised when voters approved the half-cent sales tax increase back in 2002. When the voters of Miami-Dade, okayed the half-cent sales tax increase we understood that the “new” dollars collected would be dedicated to “new” additions to our transit system. This never happened. For years the new dollars were used to support the old system that, I guess, would have gone into total disrepair if it weren’t for the new money. As recently as a year ago our county manager was quoted as saying the mass transit extension along NW 27th
Avenue wasn’t dead and that the county had a “plan” to receive federal funding approval for the project. The deal was dead then. Why they didn’t come clean and say so is typical of those we elect to public office. Here we are, seven years later and all the promised expansion of our current Metrorail, the addition of new buses and expanded bus routes are all a dream. The promised Independent Citizens Oversight board never became a reality. It was simply an appointed group of dedicated citizens who met, reviewed the transit progress and made recommendations to the county government. Hollow words as the mechanism that created the oversight board gave no real authority to their actions. Now, in 2009, the county commissioners, I would suggest at the urging of the administration, voted to alter the transit policy and permit, what it had been doing all along, use the money to bandage up our current transit system. Commissioner Joe Martinez, who campaigned against the tax back in 2002, wants to repeal the increase. If he is successful, we will see our buses and
VIEWPOINT Metrorail fall deeper into disrepair. Current bus lines will be reduced, train station elevators will never be fixed and time between trains will increase. Martinez may look like a hero to voters who do not look behind the headlines, but it would be a sad day for public transportation if he is successful in killing the half-cent increase. It sounds nice to say “No more half-cent,” but it would be a disaster. Thanks to the Miami Herald we learned that the almost $900 million collected from the increase has been used to operate and maintain our current transit system. Even with the dollars generated by the half-cent increase our transit system in running in the red. The county commission’s vote last week will permit the half-cent revenues to be used, in addition to our current
transit system, for such “other” cost centers as public works, the 3-1-1 call center and General Services Administration. I see even less of the 2002 new dollars going into transit and more and more of the “new” dollars funding county government expenses that have absolutely nothing to do with transit. I am curious of one thing. What was our county manager’s “plan” which he talked about last year, for obtaining federal transit funds for the 27th Avenue expansion? Who was he fooling?

Claudia Fossi and Jamile Ghizoni of FASTFRAME. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY LEE STEPHENS South Miami residents can now receive expert advice and design on all art and framing needs. FASTFRAME, one of the nation’s largest dedicated custom framing providers, is now open near US 1 and Sunset Drive. Shop owners Claudia Fossi and Jamile Ghizoni say customers can expect friendly personal service and guaranteed professional craftsmanship at their store. “As the name implies, FASTFRAME provides a quick turnaround, but we also pride ourselves in quality framing and preservation techniques that have earned FASTFRAME the trust and business of museums and historical organizations throughout the country,” Fossi said. From the creative displays of children’s art to shadowboxing of family or collector’s items, Claudia believes visitors to their store will be surprised and excited by the variety of design options and the store’s guarantee. Customers can expect museum quality framing and guaranteed satisfaction. Every FASTFRAME provides a lifetime guarantee on craftsmanship and a 30day guarantee on design. Claudia thinks the FASTFRAME Guarantee is their greatest competitive advantage. “If the customer is not 100 percent satisfied with the end product, we’ll redo it until they are,” she says. Custom framing is growing in popularity throughout the country as a way
to display and preserve valued art and personal mementos. FASTFRAME uses an exclusive treatment for preserving artwork called Preservation Plus™, to ensure total protection for all framed pieces. Customers can now preview what their finished piece will look like before they leave the store, says Fastframe shop owner Claudia Fossi. “Custom framing is a very creative activity and customers sometimes have difficulty imagining what the final piece will look like,” said Fossi. “FrameVue has made it very easy for my customers to visualize how their art will look when it’s completed.” The computer software program takes an image of the client’s artwork with the selected framing materials. Within moments, an illustration is created on the computer screen to show how the final framed piece will look. “FrameVue has been extremely helpful, especially when customers are trying to decide between different mat colors and frames,” said Fossi. “Just a few clicks of a mouse and I can preview the options for them to decide.” Based in Newbury Park, Calif., FASTFRAME is the largest dedicated custom framing franchise organization in the United States. To learn more, visit www.fastframe.com. Claudia and Jamile’s store is located at 5900 SW 73rd Street in South Miami. For information, call 305-668-5718.

Restaurante Guayacan offers great Nicaraguan cuisine BY TINA WISZNAT Family-owned and operated for 22 years is not only a testament to its overall success, but a sure sign that Restaurante Guayacan is consistently serving up what their customers have grown to love over the years. Nicaraguan cuisine was not as popular as it is now in Miami, if one could believe such declarations. At Guayacan’s two locations: on Calle Ocho and the second on Bird Road, high grade Angus beef is what sets popular Especialidades de la Parrilla (charbroiled specialites) a cut above. Filet Mignon, Carne Asada (Nicaraguan style tender filet) and the ubiquitous Churrascos is an exquisitely butter soft center-cut here. Another standout dish is Pescado a la Tipitapa; a fresh whole snapper deep fried with the bones out! (A secret in-house technique.) Dressed in a warm tomato and onion vinegar sauce, this and all dishes are accompanied by authentic Gallo Pinto (small red beans and rice), Tostones or Sweet Plantains. Convoy Sauces served a la carte and used to smother at will, include: a Chimichurri of chopped parsley, garlic and spices in olive oil; marinated peppers and onions; and a wonderful pepper slaw, mildly spiced with jalapeño and orange bitters. Queso Frito, Ceviche, Nacatamale (Nicaraguan corn meal tamales) Chancho Frito and Vigorón (fresh fried

More than 50 koi donated for Baptist Hospital lake More than 50 koi fish were donated and released recently into the lake at Baptist Hospital by Phil and Patty Marraccini, the owners of Summerland Tropical Fish Farms. Mr. Marraccini said he wanted to help enhance the beauty of the hospital lake for the many joggers and walkers who visit the lake each day. He said he chose to donate the koi to the hospital because his three children, who are now grown, were born at Baptist Hospital. His wife, Patty, also worked as a nurse at Baptist for more than 25 years.

In an effort to help control the cat overpopulation problem in Miami-Dade County, the county’s Animal Services Department, Humane Society of Greater Miami Adopt-A-Pet, The Cat Network Inc., South Florida Veterinary Medical Association and South Florida Veterinary Foundation will join forces and offer free spay/neuter services on Mar. 22 at the clinic located at 10700 SW 211 St. Local veterinarians will be donating their time to perform the spaying and neutering. Participating organizations encourage pet owners to spay or neuter their pets, as it helps reduce the number of unwanted cats and protects them from health issues that may develop later in life. The free spay and neuter event is for cats only. Appointments are required. Call for appointment 305-805-1603, Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Requirements: Service is for MiamiDade County residents only. Proof of cur-
rent rabies vaccination for cats over 4 months of age. A rabies vaccine can be obtained the day of surgery at no additional cost. Veterinarian may decline surgery due to health reasons. Feral cats and those who go outdoors will be ear tipped to identify them as sterilized. The pet overpopulation crisis needs the entire community to work together in order to reduce the number of animals abandoned and ultimately euthanized at Animal Services. In this partnership, the goal is to sterilize approximately 300 cats. Miami-Dade Animal Services is responsible for enforcing Chapter V, as well as Florida Statute 828, which deals primarily with animal cruelty issues. Each year, the shelter impounds more than 34,000 pets. The goal at Animal Services is to reunite lost pets with their families or find life-long homes for as many animals as possible. For more information, visit online at <www.miamidade.gov/animals> or call Miami-Dade’s Answer Center at 3-1-1.

DISTRITO APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF ORGANIZATION OF NURSE EXECUTIVES Mercy Hospital has announced that Claudia DiStrito, senior vice president of Nursing and Patient Services, has been
THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, FEBRUARY 3, 2009 - A top official at the state Office of Insurance Regulation said Tuesday night that regulators believe the private insurance market could absorb potentially all of the 900,000-plus property insurance policies that would be shed if State Farm were allowed to pull out of Florida as it has proposed to do. State Farm has proposed a twoyear pull out, and company officials told a House Insurance Committee Tuesday that they couldn't say precisely what might be able to change the company's mind, given its precarious financial situation. The company was recently turned down by state regulators for a 47 percent rate increase and company officials told legislators that it can't bear any more losses in the property market in Florida, given the state's hurricane record, regulatory environment and a recent increase in the amount of discounts that customers can get for stormhardening their homes.
THE MIAMI HERALD, JANUARY 27, 2009 - Saying its finances are weakened, State Farm's Florida unit wants to get out of the business of property insurance in the state. The company, Florida’s largest private insurer of homes and condos with 1.2 million policies, wants to keep only auto insurance, it said in a statement. Other State Farm units would still sell life, health and other financial services, it said in a statement. Under State Farm’s proposal, it would phase out of the property insurance business over two years, giving existing customers time to find new coverage. If State Farm’s plan is approved by state insurance regulators, that means it will no longer write the full range of property policies, including homeowners, condo, renters, boaters, mobile home, business property, commercial liability and commercial marine. As seen in Insurance News a publication of the Latin American Association of Insurance Agencies.

2009 Mercedes CL has it all — luxury, styling, technology Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The 2009 Mercedes Benz CL Coupe is, quite frankly, an incredible piece of automotive machinery. If luxury, styling and state-of-the-art technology are what you want in an automobile, then this is the car for you. The flagship Mercedes-Benz CL coupe lineup includes four models — the V-8 powered CL550 4MATIC (our test car), the rear-wheel-drive CL63 AMG (with an all-AMG V-8) and the 12-cylinder CL600 and CL65 AMG. While the CL550 is powered by a 5.5-liter V-8 engine delivering 382 hp and 391 pound-feet of torque; the CL63 AMG features a 6.3-liter V-8 that produces 518 hp and 465 pounds-feet of torque. One of the most powerful naturally aspirated production V-8s ever, the high-rpm engine has many features derived from AMG’s successful racing efforts. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive model is
standard for 2009. Mercedes engineers reason that as modern all-wheel-drive systems become even more refined, they are becoming increasingly popular, especially in the luxury car market. The 4MATIC model is differentiated by new 18-inch wheels with a distinctive seven-split-spoke design. The 4MATIC system has full-time allwheel-drive that’s integrated into the seven-speed automatic transmission. The system fits right into the standard CL body and utilizes the existing front suspension (gone are the special parts and wider transmission tunnel that were necessary on earlier 4MATIC systems). The extra gears and shafts that drive the front wheels now weigh only 145 pounds more than the rear-wheel-drive model. Beginning from the right side of the transmission tail section, a driveshaft powers a front final drive and differential unit just to the right of the engine oil pan, and the left front axle shaft passes through a tube in the oil pan. The CL550 4MATIC also comes with new standard equipment that includes heated and active ventilated front seats and the Keyless-Go system. Many CLs are ordered with the optional AMG sport package, which includes deeper front and rear aprons, AMG side sills and 19-inch

MCH makes Parents magazine ‘Best Children’s Hospitals’ list BY RACHEL PERRY Miami Children’s Hospital has been included in Parents magazine’s 2009 listing of the nation’s “Best Children’s Hospitals.” Miami Children’s is the only hospital in Florida to be included in the ranking. In order to be considered for ranking, hospitals from across the nation were asked to complete a comprehensive survey developed by Parents magazine. The 250-question survey requested information related to survival rates, numbers of complex procedures performed, research studies, staff qualifications, safeguards to prevent medical errors and more. “Miami Children’s is delighted to be included in the 2009 ‘Best Children’s Hospitals’ ranking,” said Dr. Narendra Kini, president and
CEO of Miami Children’s Hospital. “We commend the magazine for undertaking this project so that parents can make informed decisions regarding the care of their precious children.” The “Best Children’s Hospitals” survey is conducted and released every two years. Miami Children’s Hospital was ranked 26th in both 2009 and in 2007 when the last survey was published by Child magazine. When Child ceased print operations in early 2008, Parents magazine — owned by the same parent company, Meredith Corporation — took over the “Best Children’s Hospitals” rankings. The complete rankings can be viewed online at <www.parentsmag.com> and a partial list is in the February 2009 issue of Parents magazine, which is now on newsstands.

Hantman voted vice chair of MPO Governing Board BY LEE STEPHENS Miami-Dade School Board member Perla Tabares Hantman was elected vice chair of the Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (MPO) Governing Board on Jan. 29 after receiving the unanimous support of the board’s members. Hantman’s selection represents the first time that this position of leadership in the MPO has been held by someone other than a county commissioner. “I am thrilled and humbled with this opportunity to help lead the MPO,” said Hantman, who has served on the MPO since 1999 when she was appointed by Florida’s governor. “This is a tremendous responsibility that I look forward to fulfilling with integrity, honor and commitment.” During her concurrent service to the MPO and the Miami-Dade County School Board, Hantman has championed safety causes, including the Safe Routes to School Program and Walk
Our Children to School Day, which teach children safe walking skills and outline safe routes to school for students and parents. Hantman also has advocated for Teen Driver Safety Week, which encourages changes in unsafe driving behaviors at the high school age level to help save lives, and for the development of guidelines to coordinate the installation of traffic control safety devices for new educational facilities. She has served on the school board since 1996, representing District 4. In 1999, she was nominated and unanimously elected school board chair, becoming the first Hispanic woman to serve in that position. In 2000 and 2001 Hantman was re-elected and served second and third consecutive terms as the board’s chair. Hantman also has served as the school board’s vice chair. She was a member of the Florida Board of Regents, the governing board of Florida’s 10 state universities, from 1990 to 1996.

As part of its commitment to place an AED in each of Miami-Dade County public schools, the Heart Center will, in turn, give the AED to Hialeah Gardens High School, which wasn’t built when the Heart Center donated 489 AEDs to schools in 2007. How to Choose a Dentist BY MIKE DUNN A good first step in choosing a dentist is to ask neighbors, friends and coworkers about the family dentist they have chosen. This is especially helpful if you are moving to a new community and haven’t had time to become acclimated to your surroundings. If there is one dentist who is mentioned frequently and you like what you are hearing, the next step is to schedule a visit to meet him or her and get acquainted. The purpose is to see if you feel comfortable with this person and his dental practices. After all, the dentist you choose will be working on your teeth and the teeth of your spouse and children for possibly a long time. Ask the prospective dentist about his philosophy of health care. You might be surprised at the answer you receive. Ask about fees, payment plans, and insurance coverage. You know what your financial situation is, so it is proper for you to initiate the discussion. How did the dentist and his or her staff respond to you? Was there a professional atmosphere in the office? Did the dentist and staff take the time to listen to your concerns and seem genuinely interested? A dentist who seems too rushed or too busy to take the time to get acquainted may not have the time to address your personal needs and concerns down the road and is probably not the one you want. Something else to consider is the size of the dentist office. This isn’t always the case, but sometimes a dentist with a large practice and a large staff has little time to devote to individual patients. He or she is too busy working and keeping up with the cost of the practice! Large dental practices are more likely than smaller ones to hurry patients through without taking the time for proper examinations or thought to what is actually best for the patient. First and foremost, you want a dentist who has your best tooth care and treatment in mind. You can also make evaluations about a prospective dentist after your initial examination. Did the dentist take the time to do a thorough exam so that no problems or potential problems are missed? A thorough dental examination includes not only inspection of the teeth and gums, but also of the tongue, lips, inside of the cheek, palate, and the skin of the face and neck, plus feeling the neck for abnor-
mal lymph nodes and enlargement of the thyroid gland. A good dentist is also on the alert for periodontal (gum) disease. Did the dentist check for signs and symptoms of periodontal disease such as bleeding from the gums and/or pockets of decay? After the exam, did the dentist establish goals for your long-term care? In March of 1997, Consumers Research provided a number of questions for consumers to ask themselves after they have received treatment from a dentist. These help determine the level of the dentist’s skill. Here are the questions: How does your bite feel? Is any of the dental work irritating your gum? Does the treated tooth look like a tooth? Does dental floss or your tongue catch on the tooth? Did the dentist take time to polish your fillings? Do you feel pain when drinking hot or cold liquids? Was any debris left in your mouth after treatment? Does the dentist use a water spray to cool your teeth while drilling? Other things to watch out for in evaluating a prospective dentist are an emphasis on mass production rather than quality care; an emphasis on cosmetic procedures and one-visit comprehensive treatments; and the routine use of intravenous sedation. Your dentist should be someone in whose judgment you trust. You are entrusting to the dentist the long-term tooth care of your family. Asking the right questions ahead of time can help to assure you of making an informed decision that you won’t regret in the years to come. Copyright © 2005 Publishers-Edge

How to Choose a Pharmacy BY MIKE DUNN When choosing a pharmacy for your family, there should be other considerations aside from a convenient location or even cost. After all, there is much at stake in selecting the right pharmacy and the right pharmacist. This is a person that you, your spouse and your children may be dealing with for many years. Your pharmacist, first and foremost, should be someone you know and trust. According to the apharmacist.org Web site, you should give as much consideration to choosing your pharmacist as you do to choosing a doctor. Pharmacists are health care professionals specializing in medicines and their appropriate use. Because of this, your pharmacist plays an important role in your personal health care and the health care of your family. The importance of assessing personal service in selecting a pharmacist is considered critical by most patients. In that regard, here are some questions to ponder: How accessible is the pharmacist? Is he or she easy to talk to and willing to hear your concerns? During what hours is the pharmacist available to answer your questions?
It is important to choose one pharmacist with whom you can establish an ongoing relationship. Also, by choosing one pharmacy, a complete record of the medicines you take is in one place, making them easier to coordinate and manage. Your pharmacist can alert you to possible drug interactions - particularly if you take a number of different medications - help you track refills on important prescriptions, and provide any necessary detail on short notice. It is wise to consider your entire family’s pharmacy needs. Often, a pharmacist can help you with special circumstances, such as when you are taking care of an elderly relative. If you have aging parents that live nearby, you might ask, for example, if it is possible to deliver prescriptions to their home and send the bill to you. Not all pharmacists and/or pharmacies provide the same services. All pharmacies are required to meet minimum standards. Most, however, offer services and conveniences beyond the minimum requirements. When choosing a pharmacist and/or pharmacy, you should evaluate your needs and make a selection to meet those needs. Here are some other suggested questions to consider: Does the pharmacist take time to answer
your questions in a manner that you understand? Is the pharmacy open during hours that fit your schedule? Does the pharmacy deliver? If so, are there restrictions or additional charges? If there is an emergency, does the pharmacy provide after-hours service or a special emergency telephone number? Are charge accounts available? Does the pharmacy handle the drugs you expect to be taking? There may be a higher cost for additional services or conveniences such as delivery, charge accounts, and emergency service. Real value, however, comes not only from the price of your prescriptions, but from having your specific needs met at a fair price. It is also very helpful to become thoroughly familiar with your insurance benefits as they concern your prescriptions. For example, some prescription benefits plans will only pay for the dispensing of a certain days supply of your medication. If your physician issues a prescription for a larger supply of medication, the pharmacy will have to decrease your quantity dispensed or your insurance company will not pay for the medication. Obviously, since your physician is issuing the prescriptions, it is important to advise your
physician concerning any prescription restrictions under your prescription benefits plan. Not every pharmacy will accept your prescription drug card. A pharmacy must sign a contract to provide services for each prescription benefit plan. The owner of the pharmacy must review each contract and decide which insurance plans the pharmacy will accept. If the pharmacy does not accept your prescription card, the pharmacy probably does not have a signed contract with your health insurance provider. In some cases, pharmacy owners may take steps to add your prescription benefit plan if asked to do so. Once you weigh all the factors and choose a pharmacy, it is strongly recommended that you use this pharmacy for all of your prescriptions needs. This allows you to receive the greatest benefit from the “screening” for drug interactions, etc., by your pharmacist since this one pharmacy has all of your prescription drug records.
