Miami Breast Institute offers women a world of difference BY AMY LIVERGOOD DONNER

went to The Miami Breast Institute because it is located in the Whole Foods building on Red Road and San Remo near my home. I thought to myself, it doesn’t matter where you go for your mammogram, it matters that you go. So I go to this place close to home. Turns out it does matter where you go. I was so impressed with every aspect of the experience that if The Miami Breast Institute moves far from my home, I will make the journey. The eight times I have had a mammogram before, I have always gone to the center my doctor directed me to. After a hassle in the parking lot, I had to wait at least 40 minutes in a room with four televisions all tuned to different stations. At least there is a copy of Community Newspapers. Finally you are called to a room to change, you put on a white robe and wait again. This time you are with a group of other white robbed woman. At least there are no televisions in this room, but there is also no

What do you want? BY SCOTT BAUMANN Fitness Together Miami In my fifteen plus years of personal training, I have found that people exercise for two reasons: 1. To look better. 2. To feel better and be healthy. It is important to recognize which of those reasons is your priority and I will explain why with a conversation I had recently with a friend of mine who is a bodybuilder. This friend, let’s call him J, looks very good all year round. I have noticed him recently start to look exceptionally defined and lean. When I asked what he was doing differently, J told me that he “normally” eats five small meals a day and in the course of a day will eat twelve egg whites, two cups of oatmeal, two pounds of chicken or turkey and lots of vegetables. He will work out five days per week and eat some occasional “junk.” But come summertime when

Twenty minutes later it’s your turn. The mammogram technician readies you, gets the needed pictures and you are back in the dressing room in ten minutes. The pictures are viewed by a radiologist at some future time and your GYN is informed of the results. At The Miami Breast Institute the parking is easy. The office is beautiful, but it doesn’t matter because you don’t wait long. When I went to the robe area I was treated to my choice of rock concert videos. By now I am starting to feel very pleased to be taking care of myself by getting a mammogram. Early detection is the key, I think to myself. I am seen by the mammogram technician. She is very thorough. Her attention to her work is noticeably different than what I have experienced in the past. Then I notice a sign on the mammogram machine. “Miami Breast Institute, located in Coral Gables, Florida, has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the

American College of Radiology (ACR).” Hmmm… this place really is different, and by that I mean better. Turns out of the 500 accredited mammography facilities in Florida, only 20 have been awarded this prestigious designation. By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the College’s voluntary, breastimaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program. The breast imaging service center is fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that this facility has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs. Improved FCAT scores earn students a special party Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club held an annual fifth grade graduation party for FS Tucker Elementary students on May 29 at their clubhouse. Students, dressed in their finest attire, celebrated with the teachers and Principal Annette DeGoti, who announced and congratulated students on their marked improvement in FCAT scores. Club members Linda Hartwell and Debra Adam were presented with a special gift from the school for their support. Several students entertained the crowd including Victoria Diaz, on Trumpet, as well as Alex Blandin, on acoustic guitar.

Before the dancing began, club members helped served plates of great spaghetti and meatballs after which the fifth graders made ice cream sundaes for dessert. On Thursday May 28, The Learning Experience School, the only school in Miami for students from birth to adulthood with mild to moderate developmental disabilities, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and donor party to celebrate the opening of the their new $2 million One United Campus. The school’s brand new 20,000 square foot campus in combines their three previous locations all ‘under one roof’ into a centralized campus in South Miami. More than 75 guests attended the reception during which guests were given a tour of the new facility. The program also included the formal ribboncutting and remarks from guest speaker United States Congresswoman Ileana RosLehtinen. Bacardi generously sponsored this ribbon cutting and donor reception. Hell’s Kitchen contestant Chef Josh Wahler is making a name for himself in South Florida as Executive Chef at 5300 Chop House, a new upscale restaurant located at this all suites resort, The Blue, located on Doral’s Blue Golf Course. FP&L’s proposed dig could add salt to drinking water R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Those of us that run our air conditioners on Florida Power & Light energy could be choosing between paying more for electricity or running the risk of FP&L’s proposed rock mining damaging our drinking water. When I say “we” will be choosing, I really mean our elected board of county commissioners, with advice from regulatory agencies in Tallahassee, will make the decision for us. Here’s the story. FP&L must generate more electricity as population growth demands more power. Turkey Point, a nuclear generating plant, can be expanded, but, with certain expansion requirements that do not bode well for our South Florida community. Last week FP&L asked the country commission for approval to dig up hundreds of acres of land adjacent to the Turkey Point

plant. The rock will be used as fill for the expanded facility. The problem is increased salt intrusion west into our primary drinking water wells that supply the southern tip of Southeast Florida including the Keys. FP&L wants to dig up 880 acres of farmland between Turkey Point and the Homestead Air Base. They claim that if they are prohibited from digging the rock from nearby farmland, they will have to pay tens of millions of dollars to truck in the rock from far off rock pits, more than likely in northwest Miami-Dade. The threat, though not stated at this stage in the game, will more than likely be “If we can’t dig up the rock we need we will be forced to pass on to our customers the millions we will spend to truck in the fill.” Thus our dilemma: Spend more on electricity or run the risk of salty drinking water. There are other problems associated with the proposed 880 acres of rock pits. The possible salt intrusion, west toward the Everglades, will hamper our efforts to flush fresh water from the Everglades into Biscayne Bay to the south in an attempt to regenerate marine life that has been killed by phosphate runoffs

Our county commissioners, by an 8 to 2 vote, gave preliminary approval and sent the FP&L request to Florida’s Department of Community Affairs in Tallahassee for consideration and recommendation. Remember Tallahassee recommended not moving the Urban Development Boundary. Nonetheless, after reviewing the department’s recommendations, county commissioners voted to move the boundaries for two major commercial projects. FP&L’s land-use proposal touts the quarries as “water management projects” that could be used for Everglades restoration. Dawn Shirreffs, South Florida organizer for Clean Water Action Committee, said, “Mining, for Everglades restoration, is like starting a smoking habit for your health.” Voting against the proposal, Commissioners Katy Sorenson and

Barbara Jordan said the plan posed risks to the county’s drinking water and should be rejected now without further review. Commission chair Dennis Moss, while voting “yes,” said “three questions must be answered before a final okay: Is there a real benefit to the public? Is there no impact on the water supply? And, that this doesn’t open up additional rock mining in the area?” I am surprised that real estate developers and home builders aren’t fighting FP&L’s proposal. Some 880 acres going from farmland to rock pits is land that could some day be rezoned for homes, and will be gone forever as future residential subdivisions.

No waiting for a letter. When you are young and invincible this doesn’t matter so much, but as we get older and we know too many people with breast cancer it’s a comfort. At Miami Breast Institute each patient receives face-to-face individualized care from their radiologist, in a relaxed spa like environment. earlier in the same building that originally housed the popular Big Cheese Restaurant from 1984 to 1991, which moved across the street when that building became available. McKinney, 61, a native Miamian, stocks more flavors of ice cream in his store than an old Howard Johnson ice cream shop. “I have 28 flavors showing all the time, but I actually have 40 flavors in stock,” he says. “But I can’t show them all because I don’t have enough room. So we alternate displaying some flavors.” If you don’t see what you want in the display case, just ask and McKinney probably has it in the back room. McKinney buys his ice cream from a Miami-Dade County company that exports most of the product it turns out. “He makes it in small batches, so it’s always fresh,” McKinney says. “He never makes more than 12 tubs at a time and I draw it off as I need it. Then he’ll make 12 more and throw them in the freezer. I have quarts and pints, and three plastic cups in four sizes – I give kids a smaller portion and, of course, the price is adjusted accordingly.” A quart of ice cream sells for $8.79 and a pint goes for $4.79. McKinney also stocks a variety of mouth-watering homemade fudge. “That’s something that I started making about eight months ago,” he says. “I thought it would be a nice add-on to the ice cream. I thought that the people would eat the ice cream while they’re here and if they liked the fudge, they’d

take some home with them. The company I deal with sells me the same ingredients that they sell to Disneyworld. I use the same system to make it that Disney uses and basically I produce the same product that they do.” McKinney recently instituted a new wrinkle at the ice cream parlor, something aimed at drawing new customers. “We’re showing old movies – television classics and old movies,” he said. “At dark, we set up a projector outside and show them on the side of the building, sort of like a mini drive-in theater.” Right now, the movies begin at 8 p.m., but they’ll start later as daylight lasts later into the evening hours. “I have some Elvis movies, I Love Lucy, Ozzie and Harriet, Leave It to Beaver, The Honeymooners, Superman from the ’50s with George Reeves; I have Superman cartoons from the ’40s, Batman from 1934; and I’ve just recently ordered Star Trek because of the new movie coming out and all the interest in Star Trek.” On Tuesday, June 16, McKinney will sponsor a fund-raising event to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. “Adam Jacobson approached me about doing a fund-raiser and I agreed,” McKinney says. “So we’ll have an ice cream social here at the store from 4-6 p.m. and we’ll donate 30 percent of the proceeds that are generated over the two hours to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Hopefully, we’ll raise a lot of money for them.” Wall’s Ice Cream Parlor opens each day at 12 p.m. and closes at 11 p.m. MondayThursday, 12 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 10:30 p.m. on Sunday. Miami-Dade County Commission chair Dennis C. Columbus conducted its annual Block “C� Athletics Awards Banquet in May. The Spor tsmanship A ward went to Caesar Rodriguez, a three-year letterman in two sports — football and track. He ranks as one of the best defensive ends in the history of the Columbus football program and earned First Team All Dade Honors. He won backto-back district championships in the discus and also qualified for the regional meet in the shot put. Rodriguez was a Eucharistic minister, a Campus Ministry leader, and the lead anchor on the Christopher Columbus New Network. He will play football for Central Michigan University. The Scholar Athlete A ward went to Eric Evans, a well-rounded athlete and student who with a GPA of 5.2 ranked third in his senior class. A four-year letterman in roller hockey, he has played a vital role in the emergence of the program as a powerhouse in Miami-Dade County. This year he led the team to a divisional championship. The Columbus track team benefited

greatly from his pole-vaulting prowess. As a junior he qualified for the state championship and as a senior he captured the individual title at the regional championship. He was instrumental in the Explorers’ drive to their first regional track title in 35 years. Active in Campus Ministry, he received a Miami Herald Silver Knight nomination and was a member of the Mas Scholars Program. He will attend the University of Florida. The Outstanding Athlete A ward went to Gary Bush who is truly outstanding in three sports, a rare achievement these days. In football, he added explosive athleticism to the wide receiver corps, while rushing the ball to help the Explorers clinch a playoff berth. In basketball, he led the team in scoring two years in a row and was a two-time team MVP. In track, as a junior he won the long jump at the Dade County Youth Fair Meet and qualified for the state meet. As a senior he was a triple winner in the district finals. He is the first Explorer in 30 years to be awarded a scholarship to Purdue University.

Should you seek a second opinion on your annuity?

While reviewing a new client’s portfolio recently, I ran across a variable annuity that the client had owned for many years. At one point, the client had seen the portfolio appreciate greatly due to the fact that it was invested entirely in equities. Unfortunately, the client recently saw all of the gains erased, along with some of the initial investment (cost basis), because he was invested 100% in equities. This left the client a little distressed. As we analyzed the portfolio in the variable annuity, my client decided that he was no longer comfortable having any equity exposure in his portfolio. At this point, the conversation shifted to the types of investments he would be more comfortable owning. The idea of fixed annuities arose during the conversation. My client had owned fixed annuities in the past and was still interested in having a taxdeferred investment since he is in a high income tax bracket. Below you will find all of the different options that we took into consideration before we made any decisions. An annuity is a contract with an insurance company. Annuities are

long term investments that grow tax deferred. Variable annuities involve fees and expenses not typically associated with other investments. This tax deferral means that any interest, dividends, or capital gains that are earned inside the annuity are not taxable until the client actually takes a distribution from the annuity. The tax-deferred growth is an important benefit of an annuity for an investor in a high tax bracket. The annuity owner can defer earnings for years, therefore reducing his tax liability. Investing in an annuity within a tax-deferred account such as an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) will provide no additional tax savings. After a few years of compounded growth, an annuity can potentially accumulate a significant amount of tax-deferred growth inside the contract. This is where an IRS tax provision called a 1035 exchange would be beneficial if the contract owner was ever contemplating a replacement of their annuity. The IRS 1035 exchange allows for unrealized gains inside the tax deferred annuity to be exchanged into another annuity without realizing an immediate tax consequence. There are times when replacing an existing annuity to another annuity company could be beneficial. Advantages of an exchange could be as simple as a higher interest rate on a fixed annuity or obtaining additional rider benefits inside a variable annuity. Prior to surrendering an annuity, investors should consider the effect of any surrender charges which may apply in the early years of the contract and any additional fees and expenses associated with the new policy.

Significant enhancements have been made to variable annuity contracts in recent years through contract riders. The benefits range from Principal Protection riders to Lifetime Income riders. All of these riders differ depending upon the issuing insurance company. Unfortunately, my client’s variable annuity contract did not have any of these riders. If the contract did contain one of these riders we would have had the simple solution of keeping the policy as is and simply implementing the rider. Older variable annuity contracts might not have any of these contract rider benefits attached to the existing policy. If a variable annuity contract holder is interested in obtaining these types of riders, they might have to exchange their policy to a different insurance company that offers the desired contract rider benefits. Optional riders involve additional fees. These above mentioned examples are where an IRS 1035 exchange might be needed for the client. For example, if a client originally invested $100,000 and the present market value of his annuity is $200,000, the client would avoid paying income tax on the $100,000 of growth by using the IRS 1035 exchange provision. By using this tax provision correctly, the taxpayer defers paying the income tax on this exchange until a later date. Now what happens if the taxpayer has a loss on a variable annuity? Can they deduct the losses? The answer is yes, just as long as they do not use the IRS 1035 exchange process. The loss has to be realized. This means that the client will have to close (surrender) the policy in full.

This is where having a good accountant is very helpful. Since the IRS does not offer any specific guidance on the deductibility of variable annuity losses we must refer to different IRS Revenue Rulings and IRS Publications for guidance. In the end, my client did choose to go into a fixed annuity because he did not want to worry about the market volatility of his investment. He did move his variable annuity to the fixed annuity but only after he completely surrendered his variable annuity in order to realize the tax losses. He did not use the IRS 1035 exchange provision since this would have disqualified him from realizing the tax losses. During this process we were in constant contact with the client’s accountant in order to make sure that everyone was on the same page. If you are presented with the idea of making any type of changes to existing annuities, it is strongly suggested that you consult your accountant first to make sure that you fully understand your tax implications. Sandra Sher Goldman’s art in exhibition at Alper JCC BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ A retrospective of the work by artist Sandra Sher Goldman is on exhibit through June 26 at the Futernick Family Gallery at the Alper JCC in Kendall. Through various mediums including paintings, printmaking and ceramics, the artist’s talent and versatility are seen clearly as she paints and sculpts the story of her life during the past 50 years. The show begins with a gentle, muted oil painting of a street scene in her hometown of Malden, MA, and quickly moves to a series of beautifully drawn etchings and aquatints that were inspired when she and her family moved to Miami. Re-Joyce – Miami to celebrate ‘Bloomsday’ 105th Anniversary BY ROBERT HAMILTON For millions of people June 16 is an extraordinary day. On that day, 105 years ago, two residents of Dublin, Ireland — Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom — embarked on their epic converging journeys through the city. Their travels and adventures, both real and imagined, were memorialized in James Joyce’s masterpiece, Ulysses, the world’s most highly acclaimed modern novel. “Bloomsday,” named after Leopold Bloom, has become a tradition for Joyce enthusiasts all over the world. From Tokyo to Sidney, San Francisco to Buffalo, Trieste to Paris, Sarasota to Miami, dozens of cities around the globe hold their own Bloomsday festivities. Miami-Dade County will join these cities in observing the Bloomsday 105th Anniversary Celebration with a series of activities in Coral Gables. The St. Patrick’s Day Committee, Miami-Dade Public Library System, City of Coral Gables, Actors’ Playhouse, Books and Books, and JohnMartin’s

Restaurant and Irish Pub are sponsors. “Tempo Contemporary,” an elegant show of 16 works by five Dominican Republic artists and 80 student artists from around the United States, continues through June 19 in the Miami Dade College Kendall Campus Gallery. The Dominican works were curated by Lilia Fontana, MDC Kendall Gallery director, from Abro Gallery in Miami’s Wynwood Art District. The 80 student works were supplied by Alberto Mesa, professor of printmaking and painting, who participates in an exchange program with Oregon State University. Student prints from 14 states and six countries are represented in the show. Maximo Caminero works with mixed media on canvas, in black and white, with high impact images that express a distinct disillusionment with the repressive government. Vertigo is visually explosive, within a circumscribed composition. Tequila/No Mercy is a bleak and powerful piece that leaves no room for doubt about Caminero’s reasons for splitting his time between San Juan, PR, and Miami. Danza Del Todo brings a bit more mellow message: the dance of life continues, despite repressive governments and bitter anger. Four mixed media works on canvas by Yolanda Naranjo — Caos, Solida, Lost and Caos II, each dominated by a primary pigment color — express a turbulence and disquieted feeling that may be as much a political statement as an emotional state. Their sizes range from 59 by 78 inches to 78 by 98 inches and are among the smallest of her works. She is currently living and working in Greece. Temples I, Temples II and Temples III by Elvis Aviles are mixed media pieces, small in size and apparently meant to be companion pieces. All three are of rich chocolate brown, beige, and taupe impasto paint with

white chalk line drawing running through them and floating, recessed in their frames. These three pieces were sold within minutes of the start of the opening event to a single collector. His sophisticated utilization of chalk conjures images of primal religious art interspersed between the warm browns, remind us of Mother Earth, or in the case of this exhibit, Mother Dominican Republic.” Ezequiel Tavaras is represented by three ceramic female torsos with varied surfaces that mimic marble, charred wood and granite. All go by the title, Tras el Oscuro Objeto del Deseo. Liz Severino, lives and works in Europe, most recently in France, and a strong feminine quality pervades her work in three renditions of “Caribbean Women.” Two smaller pieces flank a larger piece and each is overlaid with impasto lace patterns. Eighty miniature prints comprise the exhibit of Mesa’s exchange program with the Oregon State University Art Department. The drawing quality of some of the student prints is impressive. One piece drawing a lot of attention is a whimsical, three dimensional miniature kite, complete with tail, all printed with an intriguing pattern that evokes memories of childhood and forays to the beach where families with children, young couples and groups of teens all launched their colorful, flying gear. BY ELENA COHAN As part of National Safe Boating Week, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 6-5 presented its second annual free safe boating class to local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and other invited children between the ages 11 and 17. The 47 participants, including 32 youth and 15 adults, met on Saturday, May 23, at Elks Lodge 1676 in South Miami and learned basic skills and legal requirements for safe boating during the three-and-a-half-hour class. Everyone passed the verbal testing at the conclusion of the class and received a certificate from the Flotilla evidencing their successful completion of the training. All the youth who attended are now eligible to receive the Safe Boater ID card from the State of Florida. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida historically has held claim to the distinction of having annually the high-

est number of boating accidents, injuries and fatalities when compared to the rest of the nation. Many boaters simply do not have the information they need to be safe on the water. Through the efforts of Flotilla 6-5, there potentially are 47 safer and bettereducated persons knowing what to do while they are out on the water. Flotilla 6-5, along with the other Flotillas in Division 6 in Miami-Dade County, present boating safety and seamanship skills classes throughout the year at numerous locations. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 6-5 meets the first Tuesday of each month at 8 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, located at 6304 SW 78 St. in South Miami. Guests are welcome at the monthly meetings and the Flotilla always is looking for people to join in assisting and supporting the Coast Guard in insuring the safety of the boating public. 2009 Mazda6 advances ‘zoom zoom’ technology Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Mazda6 was introduced in 2003 and “zoom zoom” became two of the most popular words in automotive marketing. The hot new sport sedan was the first Mazda to get the company’s sports car technology fused into a five-passenger, four-door sedan. The Mazda6 was the company’s first vehicle designed, engineered, developed and manufactured in the U.S. and the intent was to meet and surpass the American consumer’s needs. The new Mazda6 does that and more. The 2009 Mazda6 rides on a 4.5-inch longer wheelbase (109.8 inches) with wider front and rear tracks, which increases interior room in virtually all aspects. At the same time, two new powertrains give the car more horsepower and better fuel economy. The

MAZDA6i’s new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (21/30 mpg) has 170 hp, while the hot new MAZDA6s has a 3.7-liter V6 (17/25 mpg) that produces 272 hp. That’s the same new 60-degree 3.7-liter engine — called the MZI — that was introduced in the Mazda CX-9, the 2008 North American Truck of the Year. The Mazda6i comes standard with a close-ratio, six-speed manual transmission capable of handling all the performance provided by the 2.5-liter MZR engine. An electronically controlled five-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode is also available. A new six-speed automatic with manual shift mode is standard in the MAZDA6s. On the outside, the Mazda6 has a pronounced front fender much like the one on the RX-8 and a design that flows from the front fascia through the headlamp, over the top of the front-wheel opening and into the side surface ahead of the front door. A graceful S-curve flows from the highest point of the roof to the lip at the end of the deck lid, with the rear glass seeming to melt into the deck lid for a very sleek appearance. out and especially in the taillights’ intricate LED components. On the inside, blacked-out instrument faces with bright metallic markings, needles and trim give the interior a detailed look, while curved surfaces blend the console into the instrument panel. The seats are comfortably firm and have strong side bolsters that hold you in place during hard cornering. The entrylevel interior has plated metal accents and a choice of black, beige or gray cloth upholstery. The Touring level blends cloth with leather upholstery and adds a leather steering wheel cover, while the

Grand Touring interior uses leather only for the upholstery in black, beige or gray. The new Mazda6 has a quick response, a strong acceleration and good handling characteristics. It goes a long way toward stepping up Mazda’s popular “zoom zoom” spirit. Base price on the 2009 Mazda 6 is $24,910.
