egan Clementi, 25, a former South Miami resident who is returning to the area this week, was crowned Miss Florida USA 2010 during a live telecast seen by over 5 million viewers worldwide. A beautiful young woman with an unusual combination of interests, Clementi is an Electrical Engineering graduate of the University of Central Florida and also an Orlando Magic dancer. She will be representing the state of Florida in the Miss USA 2010 Pageant in the spring of 2010. Her aunt was born and raised in South Miami and still resides in the

Tom Byrne, Mayor Horace Feliu and there have been sightings of Raul Masvidal, Rene Guim, and someone told me that they saw former South Miami Commissioner Randy Wiscombe. And over at The Big Cheese, the place is loaded with South Miami cops, one of whom I ran into for the second time the day I was there. The first time I saw him was at Casa Larios at 6:45 a.m. and then for lunch at Big Cheese at noon time. Golly, just can’t get away from South Miami’s finest. Also ran into Michael Raley from the Baptist Credit Union, as well as Robin Korth and Diane Schiller, both of whom I work with five days a week. Also, couldn’t help but see Marc Spiegelman from AT&T who was having lunch with a colleague, as well as Grant Miller and who else blesses the tables over at Big Cheese—there’s Howard Schneider and Melvin Mann, the CPA’s. Amici Ami at 7382 SW 56 Ave, which is on the east side of Ace Hardware, I hear that the top guy from the First National Bank of South Miami, Bruce MacArthur, was having lunch there the other day with a couple of guys that think they are part of the 170 or so influential people of South Miami. They were causally mentioned in a New Times article that outlined how the city threw out parking tickets for the 170 or so, tickets at a value of $3,000 plus. I can tell you with all certaintly that the three guys that were there with Mr. MacArthur are just ordinary guys, of no influence, and I did hear that they were subjected to 45 minutes of story telling by the BIG Guy. And speaking of BIG Guys, haven’t seen much of Wayne Brackin, the guy that used to run South Miami Hospital. He seems to be stuck in the executive offices in the Baptist administration building on Red Road. If you happen to run across him, first check and see if you hurt him, then tell him he ought to take a walk through the hospital, cuz I hear that plenty of people still love him and want to whisper sweet nothings in his ears. And speaking of sweet nothings, I
hear that the Miami Dade Ethics Commission has found that there is Probable Cause in the complaint that was filed against Commissioner Valerie Newman. What does it mean? Well, it might mean a fine and not much else. Unless that evidence can be used against her in the city manager’s lawsuit against her. This most recent complaint will probably be heard in a couple of months by a local judge. And do you want to bet that if the judge finds her at fault that those findings will make their way up to the Governor? HMMMM. And speaking of Valerie, saw and heard her husband, Kevin, who was strumming his guitar at Black Point Marina not too long ago. He is actually pretty good and sings well, too. You might want to make your way down there, have a nice Saturday afternoon lunching with friends, maybe have a drink, sitting on the water, looking at all those boats and the calmness of the bay. And speaking of calmness, the city’s Community Center, AKA Gibson Bethel Community Center is looking real, real good. The field is looking great and the attention to details with

plastic protective coverings on top of the fences, so that the kids won’t hurt themselves, the bushes and the overall appearance of the park is super duper. And of course, the operation seems to be very smooth and there are lots of smiles on the kid’s faces. The City of Pleasant Living made it to the big times, with a five-page spread in the June edition of HotVWs, a national glossy magazine. It was a very nice piece about the 11th annual Volksblast weekend, which took place last February. The event which featured a Conga Cruise drive from Tropical Park and parties on Commerce Lane ended with dozens and dozens and dozens of Volkswagens of all ages, some nearly as old as my good friend, Al Elias, from the 40’s to the present time. Some of the cars were redone completely while others just a bit, but overall the event was a Blast and come this February I hope that you’ll make your way over to Sunset Drive for a look back and a look forward as well. Insider trading can make senator or congressman very rich R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY General Motors is having a worse than anticipated quarter. Several members of the U.S. House of Representatives learn the extent of the loss in the course of a committee meeting that keeps on top of the company’s activities since our government became the majority stockholder in GM, information that won’t be public knowledge for a few days. A Washington businessman, whose daughter happens to work as a staffer in Congress, tells her dad of the news she overheard her boss telling his chief of staff about GM’s condition. The Congressman puts in a sell order on GM as a result of the committee hearings. The Washington businessman goes short on the stock. Two days later the news of GM’s worse than anticipated quarter is made public and both the Congressman and the Washington businessman make killings in the stock market.
The Congressman sold his GM stock before the news drove the price of GM down 20 percent. He saved a small fortune. The businessman, shorting the stock, made a pile of money. What’s wrong with this picture? The businessman can go to jail for insider trading. The Congressman can keep his savings and not have to worry as he did not break the law. Wait, I thought that insider trading was against the law. The law says that you can’t use knowledge obtained in advance of the public, to make a profit. People regularly go to jail for doing it. Didn’t the Congressman have to fear the law? No, because members of Congress and their staffs are exempt from the law against insider trading. Does this mean that members of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, who on a daily basis are privy to insider information now that we, our United States government, is a major stockholder in so many large public corporations, can take advantage of this information and make a killing in the stock market? Yes, they can. How can we expect Congress to regulate the operations of the market when they are exempt from the laws they create
––– VIEWPOINT ––– to protect the community from skullduggery? We can’t! Try this scenario: A well-to-do citizen has a friend running for reelection to Congress. He goes to the Congressman and says, “Hey buddy, I’ll make a major contribution to your national committee, and give the maximum I can give to your reelection fund; my wife too, if you watch out for me.” “What do you need, my friend?” responds the Congressman, looking around the room to make sure no one is listening to their conversation. “You sit on the General Motors oversight committee. I know you are made aware of information about GM’s financial condition before the general public knows, right?” “Right!” “It’s not illegal for you to use this information, so pass the news on to me, I will buy or go short on the stock in your name and we will make a financial killing! Okay?”
“Okay!” It’s hard to believe, but two members of Congress, Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Brian Baird (D-WA) have introduced legislation that would prohibit lawmakers and their staffs from trading stocks or engaging in other financial transactions based upon information they learn in their jobs that is not available to the public. It’s nice to know someone in Congress is looking out for us. Just don’t bet on this bit of insider information that the proposed law will pass. If you make that bet, you are a sure loser.

The American Red Cross Greater Miami & The Keys has announced its newly elected members, and the new chairman and secretary of its board of directors. Marielena A. Advocacy groups and residents demand changes to Virginia Key Master Plan BY LEE STEPHENS
Thirty residents of Miami and 10 community organizations, among them Tropical Audubon Society, Urban Environment League, Sierra Club and Dade Heritage Trust, sent a letter and a detailed report to the Miami City Commissioners, Mayor Manny Diaz and City Manager Pete Hernandez expressing disappointment with the Virginia Key Master Plan developed by Ft. Lauderdalebased planning firm EDSA. This is the latest protest against a plan widely criticized for excessive development in an ecologically sensitive location. EDSA has held four public meetings, at which they heard input from citizens, though many who attended the meetings claim their suggestions were ignored. EDSA’s final design “does not represent what I saw or heard at the public meeting that they had,” Miami resident Steve Hagen said. Hagen, who is chair of the Parks and Public Space Committee of Miami Neighborhoods United, compared the plan to the administration’s Bicentennial Park Plan, saying, “This is just one more public charade.” Both the Public Advisory Board and the Waterfront Advisory Board rejected EDSA’s plan, forcing Diaz to pull it from the City Commission’s agenda. Critics of the plan were alarmed when the city manager’s office printed an agenda for the July 23 Commission meeting containing the Virginia Key item. Chairman Joe Sanchez directed the manager’s office to remove the issue from the agenda. Several environmental and historic preservation groups decided to put their concerns and recommendations in writing so that the plan may be changed sufficiently before it comes to a vote. The documents they compiled identify specific areas of the Master Plan that are
dangerous to the coastal environment. For example, the proposed active recreational and regional park, which includes over 20 athletic fields, would prove hazardous to sea turtles by luring hatchlings away from the water with large light fixtures that usually accompany ball fields. The Master Plan would also increase car traffic without significantly enhancing public transportation or the island’s carbon sinks—mangroves and other vegetation. According to the report, entitled “Virginia Key Redevelopment: A Sustainable Approach,” EDSA’s plan would not only be problematic from an environmental perspective, but from a social one as well. The proposal calls for a massive expansion of the Rickenbacker Marina and the construction of a multi-story dry dock storage complex, without providing a public access ramp into the basin. “Virginia Key’s future should not be limited to those who can afford expensive dry boat storage or marina slips,” the report states. The Miami Rowing and Watersports Center, which supports the report, uses the basin for rowing and would be affected by an increase in motorboat traffic. Regarding the Marine Stadium, concerned residents said, “The Marine Stadium, which has been designated a historical site, should be restored to its original condition.” Dade Heritage Trust has been also advocating preservation of the stadium. The report concluded, “In general, the proposal requires more environmental restoration with protection and less intrusive construction.” “This paper represents a wide array of interests and we feel it is a good compromise that has something for everyone,” Laura Reynolds, Executive Director of the Tropical Audubon Society, said. “A mismanaged and overdeveloped county has not led us down a prosperous economic path; it’s time we realize less is more.”

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor; It is a good sign that the Virginia Key Master Plan has been taken off the City Commission’s July 23rd agenda. EDSA and the City now have time to carefully consider some of the concerns that have been raised about the proposed development. The public is not in favor of an expensive project that will increase traffic, threaten native plants and commercialize the waterfront. Rather, a wide range of people have expressed interest in minimal improvements that will increase public access to the water, restore historic landmarks and preserve the natural beauty of the island. Defenders of the Master Plan have said it will only touch 257 of Virginia Key’s 1,030 acres. This reasoning fails to consider the farreaching effects facilities such as athletic fields and a BMX course can have on the surrounding coastal ecosystems. Light fixtures used on ball fields would lure hatching sea turtles away from the ocean, ending their lives. Any playing fields that are constructed should be for day use only. Runoff from such fields would also be an ecological hazard. The extreme amount of development proposed by EDSA imperils many threatened and endangered species, such as the sea turtle and the manatee. Low-impact trails for passive walking and
biking would provide recreational opportunitites to visitors without overwhelming the island’s inhabitants. A final Master Plan should include less construction, improved public transportation, and a detailed plan for green construction. The hardwood hammock should be improved to provide a buffer between buildings and the critical wildlife area, while serving as a carbon sink to offset emissions. Large structures should not overshadow the Marine Stadium or the scenic ocean view. The current plan threatens to occupy nearly every inch of space with new development. A significant amount of this development will likely be privatized, creating an island exclusive to most, but profitable for some. These points are not the complaints of a few outliers. Ten organizations, such as Tropical Audubon Society, Urban Environment League, Sierra Club and Dade Heritage Trust, as well as thirty individuals voiced these concerns in a letter addressed to the City Commissioners, which can be found at www.tropicalaudubon.org. BY ALEJANDRA CASTRO-NUÑEZ Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) has received 27 sets of pet oxygen masks that were donated by the Miami Obedience Club. “We are very grateful to the Miami Obedience Club for its generous contribution,” said Fire Chief Herminio Lorenzo. “With the addition of the 27 sets, a total of 46 fire units will now have these valuable life-safety devices for our four-legged friends.” Formed in 1961, the Miami Obedience Club is an AKC-licensed dog obedience club that takes great pride in training
owners to train their dogs. All ages, from puppies to older adult dogs, are accepted for training in a group setting on Monday evenings at Tropical Park. MDFR still needs 52 additional sets so that every response vehicle can be equipped with the pet oxygen masks. The masks are used at fire scenes where pets are rescued and require oxygen. Like the oxygen masks used by humans, the pet masks provide oxygen to dogs and cats that have suffered from smoke inhalation during a fire. They are specially designed to fit over an animal’s snout, and they come in three different sizes.

New high school in Homestead offers 21st Century approach BY ELLEN SCHULMAN The Homestead City Council recently approved plans for the new Mavericks High School of South MiamiDade County to be located at The Chamber Centre, 698 N. BY TERRENCE BROWN Great Florida Bank is teaching third, fourth and fifth grade students at Highpoint Academy in west Miami-Dade County the importance of learning to save with a bank course that offers real world experience. It will lead to the establishment of the Highpoint Academy Savings Bank staffed by students. “By learning to save at a young age, kids gain an early appreciation for the basics of money management,” said Ana Maria Perez, market lead with Great Florida Bank, who started the program with three other bank associates. “Ultimately, we are teaching sound money management skills designed to last a lifetime.” Perez and her team have been teaching the students the basic principles of banking, including: deposits, withdrawals, interest rates, building credit. Students entering fifth grade in the fall who are interested in applying for a job as a “relationship banker” or “ambassador” at the Highpoint Academy Savings Bank were asked to fill out an application. Great Florida Bank associates then interviewed students. Parents of the students applying for the jobs were invited to join in and witness the interview process. Alicia A. Casanova, principal of Highpoint Academy, believes the program not only will encourage the students to save, but also teaches them real-world skills.
“We’re all very excited about this venture since our students are learning hands-on at an early age not only about the importance of saving money and how the banking system works, but also how to interview and apply for a job and then assume the responsibilities the job requires. These are important skills that will translate into any field the students decide to pursue,” she said. Here’s how the Highpoint Academy Savings Bank works: All students in grades 1-5 are encouraged to open a Great Goals Kids Savings Account. Parents have been asked to send a check payable to themselves in the minimum amount of $25 to open the savings account. Starting in the fall, students who have open accounts will be able to make deposits/withdrawals every Friday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. A Great Florida Bank associate will be at the Highpoint Academy Savings Bank every Friday morning to teach and assist the student “relationship bankers” and “ambassadors.” “This program benefits our customers and our communities,” said Marilyn Orozco, a loan consultant with Great Florida Bank who recently taught one of the classes at the school. “We know that the earlier people learn the importance of sound money management, the better off they will be. Boy Scout Troop 10 earns ‘Best Overall’ at Camporee BY CARYN TANIS BOREN Boy Scout Troop 10 from West Kendall won Best Overall Troop for the fourth year in a row during the recent Hurricane District Camporee. Winning the title involved multiple activities which all had designated point values, including a photo hunt competition which began a month prior to the Camporee. Clues were given for locations of significance throughout Miami-Dade County and Scouts had to determine the locations, then have a photo taken wearing their Scout uniform with an adult leader and holding a troop flag. Several organized outings also scored points from watching a movie to bowling a few games. Daytime activities at the Camporee involved a gateway competition, an ice cream eating contest and a water balloon catapult event where adult leaders were the targets. Evening competitions revolved around the Camporee theme of a Hawaiian luau, which included a skit and other events where Scouts were required to demonstrate skills such as first aid and knot tying.

Miami Civic Music Association announces 77th season lineup BY ROBERT HAMILTON The Miami Civic Music Association will begin its 77th season of concerts on Friday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m., with the Frost School of Music Symphony Orchestra conducted by Thomas Sleeper. The featured soloist will be pianist Tian Ying in a performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, E flat, Op. 73, the “Emperor.” Mr. Ying has been the winner of many prestigious awards, including high honors at the Eighth Van Cliburn International Competition and is well known for his eloquent, poetic, dramatically intense performances. He has appeared with orchestras and in solo recitals throughout the United States, Europe, China and the Far East. Civic’s second concert on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 4 p.m. will feature Tian Ying in a solo recital. The 11th annual Piano Gala on Sunday, Feb. 14, at 4 p.m., will feature Rosalina G. Sackstein, piano, with guest artists in a program of music by the great classical composers arranged for two pianos. Always an audience favorite, this annual event is a fundraiser for the Rosalina G. Sackstein Piano Scholarship Endowment at the Frost School of Music. On Sunday, Mar. 7, at 4 p.m., internationally recognized soprano Margarita De Arellano will make her first appearance with Civic. De Arellano is a graduate of the Frost School of Music and the Juilliard School and made her opera debut as Gilda in Rigoletto at the Prague State Opera. She has appeared in leading soprano roles in operas by Bellini,
Donizetti and Verdi with the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich Opera and the Stuttgart Opera. Other performances include appearances with opera companies in Berlin, Vienna and Florence as well as the Seattle Opera in the United States. She has performed in concert with the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic. Her performances have received critical acclaim wherever she has appeared. A very special event, presented in cooperation with the Friends of Chamber Music, will feature four of the finest chamber musicians performing today. The ensemble includes Joseph Kalichstein, piano; Kyoko Takezawa, violin; Cynthia Phelps, viola, and William DeRosa, cello. They will perform on Sunday, May 2, at 4 p.m. The final performance of the season on Sunday, June 13, at 4 p.m., will be the annual Young Artist Debut concert. In February 2010, the Eighth National Chopin Piano Competition of the United States will take place at MiamiDade County Auditorium. This prestigious competition attracts talented young pianists from all over the United States and this concert will feature one of the most talented finalists in a solo recital. Dodge Caliber has ‘techno’ design, functionality Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Dodge Caliber is an odd looking vehicle with its “techno” design, yet it has the functionality of three different vehicles — a station wagon, a hatchback and a minivan. The Caliber made its debut as a 2007 model, replacing the Neon, and little has changed for 2009, though the high-performance SRT4 model was added to the lineup last year. Four models are available, all with four-cylinder engines — SE, SXT, R/T and SRT4 — and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.. The SE and SXT come with a 148-hp 1.8-liter engine (a 158hp 2.0-liter engine is an option for the SXT). The R/T gets a 172-hp 2.4-liter engine and the SRT4 comes with a 2.4liter, 285-hp turbocharged powerplant. As for transmissions, the 1.8 liter engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox; the 2.0 comes with a continuous-
ly variable automatic transmission (CVT); the 2.4 is available with the five-speed manual in the front-drive R/T, and the CVT in the all-wheel drive R/T; the SRT4 comes only with a six-speed manual gearbox. Caliber is a five-passenger, five-door vehicle and it does have some practicality in its design and function. The familiar Dodge crosshair grille and large flanking headlights dominate the front. The lower bumper separates the grille and headlights from a lower air intake and fog lamps. The side features a wedged beltline and bulging fenders, tires that fill up the wheelwells and longitudinal moldings with a chrome accent along the lower doors. The roofline arches from the base of the hood and flows over the side doors into the upright lower liftgate. The rear is accented by a short overhang and a steeply raked back window beneath a lipped spoiler. Oversize taillights jut from the fenders. On the inside, there is plenty of headroom in the front passenger compartment and the front seats are comfortable. There is plenty of cargo space and the folding rear seats (with an optional recline adjustment and fold-flat front pas-

New for 2009 are Uconnect Tunes and Uconnect GPS. Uconnect Tunes includes a 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing as many as 6,700 digital songs or photographs, and movies can be played on the dashboard navigation screen when the vehicle is in Park. Uconnect GPS combines the features of Uconnect Phone and Uconnect Tunes with navigation and real-time traffic. The system includes an
integrated voice recognition system and touch screen for easy operation. There’s also a drop-down stereo speaker in the liftgate that’s ideal for tailgate parties. Base pricing on the 2009 Dodge Caliber ranges from $14,000 for the SE model to $22,435 for the high-performance SRT4, though you might find those figures much lower in today’s environment.
