Metrorail station greenspace may become a public park

BY GARY ALAN RUSE ayor Horace Feliu announced last week during an interview with The South Miami News that a special project he’s been working on for the past several years is moving closer to reality. Feliu said that he met on Monday July 27 with the Metro Transit Authority, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez and his staff, members of the Department of Cultural Affairs and also with the Green Canopy Division regarding converting the “greenspace” area at the South Miami Metrorail station into a small public park. “This would be a win-win situation for everyone,” Feliu said. “For two years I’ve

ferent approach to grooming that both pet owners and their beloved pets are sure to like. “One of our trademarks is that the owners are always welcome,” Jarbas said. “So it’s very common to see the owner sitting right by the groomer while the dog is being done.” The “regulars” are done in an average of three hours and wait for their turns in a special room with their own TV (playing dog-sitting videos), spa music and their own water fountain. Most of the visiting pooches sleep away while their parents are shopping in the neighborhood. “We also offer a service called Express visits, for those owners who don’t want their ‘babies’ to be in a cage while they’re waiting,” Jarbas said. “So the babies come in, go straight to the tub, get washed and blow-dried, go immediately to the groomer and then go home with the owner. We try to spoil everybody and make everybody happy.”
Jarbas Godoy opened his first salon in Brazil in 1976, located in a fine boutique area in Salvador, Bahia. It was there that Jarbas started to experiment with the way services were provided to pets, since the way pets were treated back then was not to his liking. Jarbas has been able to provide services for dogs and cats in a compassionate environment, and has fine tuned some of the most incredible professionals he could find to his mantra of ‘fair, humane and loving treatment of the little ones that bring so much needed love and peace for so many of us.’ Jarvas has a staff of eleven at The Dog from Ipanema. “It is like a family here,” he said. “We have associates that are with us for 14, 17, 18 years.” Jarbas is clearly doing what he loves doing, and with his background in the dog show circuit where he trained and groomed some champions in record time, he and his team
know how to groom dogs in the proper way for specific breeds. Jarbas has conducted pioneering seminars for training groomers in Argentina, Peru, Puerto Rico, Portugal and Spain. Here in the USA he has been a dog grooming competition judge for over 12 years, being a founding member of IJA (a body of accredited judges from around the world) and having been nominated three times for a Crystal Award by his colleagues in the grooming industry in recognition of his contributions. He also graduated from UM with a bachelor in Psychology having pursued a Master In Counseling there. been asking the county if we could do this, or at least landscape the area and maintain it. It’s a shame the Metrorail station is still an eyesore. It would make sense if our city residents could use the property and it would also beautify the area.” Feliu said that the county has awarded the city roughly $20,000 for trees to increase the overall canopy of “green” in the City of Pleasant Living, and that some of those trees would be used for the project. The city commission would have to vote on it for approval, but since the materials—trees, plants and sod—will be provided by the county, it would be a hard thing to turn down. The county attorney’s office is currently reviewing the wording of how the project and maintenance would work, as well as pending litigation regarding the county’s role in establishing a “hometown station” at the Metrorail facility, but the mayor is optimistic that these final hurdles will be overcome and the mini-park project will soon get under way. “We want to remove the concrete barriers and the fences and add landscaping that will beautify and enhance the area, and add to our residents’ quality of life,” said Feliu. “There will be park benches, too, of course.”

NOAA’s Robert A. Black addressed South Miami Rotary meeting Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB With hurricane season upon us, South Miami Rotarians called on Research Meteorologist and Adjunct Professor of Meteorology out of NOAA, Robert A. Black, to speak to them at their July 14 meeting. Black, who flies in the eye of hurricanes to test and monitor storm patterns, entertained the crowd with some amusing stories. It seems his first flight into Hurricane Allen in 1980 was so turbulent that after the second day, the pilot quit and joined the Navy to work on submarines. South Miami Rotary meets every Tuesday at Carrabba’s 5829 SW 73th Street, in South Miami, at 12:15 p.m. Visiting Rotarians are always welcomed. In other Rotary news, Rotary Club of Coral Gables recently honored 1978-79 President Warren Zeiller. Zeiller, a faithful member of the Club from 1972 to the day of his passing last year, was also a veteran. In fact, Zeiller’s family donated $5,000 from his estate to the Rotary Club of Coral Gables to be used to help the V.A. Nursing Home where the Club has been sponsoring monthly bingo games. With that in mind, the Club decided to use the money to purchase a new Bingo machine and cards and then had a plaque prepared in Warren’s honor and placed in the room where the Club runs the games for the veterans. On Saturday, June 18th, with Warren’s wife Chardy Zeiller and son, Todd Zeiller, in attendance, the plaque was presented to Lupe Bornn, member of the education-
al therapy department at the V.A. Hospital. Bornn then surprised the family and the Rotary members by announcing the game room would be called the “Zeiller Bingo Room,” an honor well deserved by Rotarian Warren “Mickey” Zeiller. Members of the Rotary Club present at the ceremony were President-elect Sally Baumgartner representing President Wiley, Lan Nghiem-Phu, Bonnie Blaire, our Community Service Chair Judy Pantoja, Alfredo Iglesias, George Reeves, Jo Burke, Yoli Woodbridge, and guest Derek Griffeths and his wife Grettel. Mireya Kilmon has been elected Corporate Chair for The Arthritis Foundation “Let’s move together” Miami Dade Walk scheduled for November 14 2009, at Crandon Park. As a sufferer of Arthritis herself, her platform is promoting public and patient education for The Arthritis Foundation. Can we afford government retirement programs? R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY There was a time when working for the government meant sacrificing income for a guaranteed job. Government, then trying to compete with private industry for good workers, started offering benefits such as enhanced retirement plans and health benefits that were appealing to future employees but did not cost much money — in the beginning. Now, that has all changed! Working for government, especially state, county and municipal positions, no longer means a “job for life.” But, it does mean guaranteed benefits to those who retire, that private industry cannot afford, to stay competitive within the industry. General Motors and Chrysler are two perfect examples. A large portion of the price of their automobiles goes, at least before their reorganizations, to fund hospitalization and retirement benefits for retired employees, those who haven’t been working for their former employers for
many years. GM and Chrysler did not have the luxury of increasing the prices of their cars to accommodate the heavy cost of retiree benefits. If they did, their competitors would have eaten them alive by underselling their cars. Government is different. At least government was different. For years the dollars rolled into state, county and municipal treasuries. Money was not the question. Residents of our state went to the stores and bought and bought. Sales tax revenues continued to grow every year. The value of our real estate continued to grow at unprecedented rates. Real estate taxes continued to grow, and like the sales tax revenues put more and more dollars into government treasuries every year. County, municipal and state salaries continued to grow. In some cases unwarranted increases were granted and those in management seemed to turn a blind eye to the irresponsible use of taxpayer dollars. Work for government and your retirement benefits were guaranteed. Not only guaranteed but for a very high percentage of your salary. Contribute for a lifetime to Social Security and see just how little money you will receive at retire-
––– VIEWPOINT ––– ment. Social Security retirement benefits equate to about 19 percent of the average salary (based upon $50,000 at the time of retirement). Retire from government and benefits can be from 50 percent to as much as 90 percent (Miami-Dade County employees) of the average of the last few years’ salary. Join the “drop” program and see just how much money a retiring government employee will receive (but that’s for a later column). Private industry workers can no longer afford to fund government workers’ retirement programs. Workers in the private sector do not appreciate working their whole lives, paying taxes that fund government gargantuan retirement programs, and then retire on the meager monthly income provided by Social Security. Government seemed like the only place to work. Every year more and more businesses find that they can no longer afford to match a portion of employee contributions to retirement programs. Many retirees are
finding that retirement programs have been eliminated or modified by court action when their former employers go through bankruptcy. Salaries, health benefits and retirement benefits are the most costly portion of municipal, state and school systems’ budgets. Unless they are modified, bringing them into line with private industry, we will find more and more governments going into bankruptcy courts and having a federal judge modify their retirement benefits. The harsh reality is that government is spending itself out of business. Better they make the adjustments themselves than letting a bankruptcy judge do it.

Teatro Area Stage offers special productions for theater fans BY LEE STEPHENS Teatro Area Stage has two very special productions that theater lovers will not want to miss. Area Stage Conservatory ends its summer session with the macabre and uncompromisingly powerful musical Sweeney Todd by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler. The rare instance that a musical thriller has a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with howlingly funny moments of dark humor; audiences find themselves laughing hysterically one moment and gasping in surprise the next. Casting was a challenge for the directors involved in the process, John Rodaz (Artistic Director), Maria Rodaz (Executive Director), Robin Barson (Director) and Jeanne Sensale (Musical Director). They agree it is an impressive group of extremely dedicated and talented kids. Jonathan Rojas, 16, who plays Sweeney, says “I’m really excited, I’ve always wanted to do this role… it’s so different, there is no one really like Sweeney. I’ve always played romantic leads, and this is a huge departure.” Carolina Ribeiro, 14, who plays the female lead Mrs. Lovett, also loves the play. “It’s been really fun! Since I’ve never done a show at Area Stage I feel blessed to have the opportunity to play such an awesome role,” says Ribeiro. Marcos Alvarez, 13, playing Toby, responds: “Yeah! I’m very excited to do this play! I enjoy the immense effort of all involved, giving this opportunity to young performers.” Nick Ley 18, (Pirelli) a veteran performer already adds: “Sweeney Todd is such is a “monumental challenge”… to live up to the work is proving to be more enjoyable than any amount of stress it could’ve brought to us.” The cast is composed by Jonjon Rodaz (Rockway MS); Marcos Alvarez (Gulliver Academy); Nick Ley, Jonathan Rojas, Frankie Oliva, Joseph Barbosa (Belen);

The event was celebrated by the company’s chief officers and senior management with principals of the general contractor, Jaxi Builders Inc. of Miami, and Rodriguez & Quiroga, building architects. “This is a very important area in the growth of Miami and fits well into an existing objective to add coverage and convenience to existing clients and a new market area for the bank,” said Jorge I. Triay, president and CEO for the bank. Triay was joined by Raul R. Garcia, bank’s Executive Committee chair, for the traditional hardhat and silver-plated shovel groundbreaking ceremony as bank executives and guests toasted with fluted glasses of champagne. Opening is anticipated in one year for FBM’s sixth Miami-Dade location and its first in Kendall, on N. Kendall Drive (SW 88th Street), one block west of the Don Shula Expressway (SR 874). The three-story structure at 9851 N. Kendall Dr. will be 100 percent occu-
pied by bank personnel and is anticipated to employ a 25-member staff. With the opening of the new Baptist Health Breast Center, Baptist Health’s goal is to simplify — and expedite — access to exceptional care for the thousands of women facing the possibility of a lifechanging diagnosis. The Breast Center is located on the first floor of the South Miami Hospital Medical Arts Building, 6200 Sunset Dr., and serves as a centralized resource for patients with a suspected or confirmed breast cancer diagnosis. The Breast Center features a team of highly skilled breast cancer surgeons, specialized radiologists whose sole focus is breast imaging, and state-of-the-art diagnostic technology under one roof. Diagnostic services include breast MRI, breast biopsy and breast PET/PEM. “The expert physicians and technology are in place, but we also felt it was critically important to offer patients and families an ally, someone who could help guide them through the journey,” said Denise Harris, RN, vice president and chief nursing officer of Baptist Outpatient Services. “That’s where the CareCoach comes in — to serve as a trusted point of contact and centralized resource.” CareCoaches are available to help guide patients and families after a breast cancer diagnosis. Functions include appointment scheduling, connecting patients with support services such as social work, mental health counseling,
physical therapy and more, as well as providing compassionate support. “Most people think women are worried about what will happen during the course of treatment, but, in reality, they are most worried about how breast cancer is going to affect their families,” said Robert DerHagopian, MD, one of the Breast Center’s expert surgeons. “You have to plan the best treatment for the cancer, but you can’t forget about the patient’s emotional wellbeing. It helps to have an added layer of support.” The Breast Center’s décor also was carefully planned to provide a peaceful, healing environment for patients and families. The community is invited to tour the new Breast Center at the grand opening health fair scheduled for Saturday, June 27, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Free screenings for cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and osteoporosis will be offered, as well as a special unveiling, performances and refreshments. The Florida Baptist Children’s Home (FBCH) sent out an SOS for back-toschool supplies, and private donors and local merchants teamed up to provide help that was urgently needed. The FBCH, a local orphanage established in 1954 and located at 7748 SW 95 Terr., experienced severe budget cuts this year. The children who reside in the home range from elementary to high school age and this year the prospect of new backpacks and back-to-school supplies seemed out of reach. Local donors and merchants decided to make a difference in the lives of the children and provide all the necessary supplies that would get them ready for school. The Paper Boutique of South Miami
generously provided stylish backpacks and back-to-school supplies, and on Monday, July 27, students from Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart gathered at the shop located at 7346 SW 57 Ave. in South Miami and volunteered to arrange, pack and gift wrap each of these backpacks. Other area retailers — Staples, Get Smart, Kids 4 Kids and private donors generously joined in the effort as well. “It is heartwarming to see the outpouring of support from local retailers and donors, in these tough economic times” said Susan Isenberg, who reached out and coordinated the effort. ‘Share A Haircut’ program to benefit disadvantaged children Hair Cuttery, the largest family-owned and operated chain of hair salons in the country, will launch its 10th annual “Share A Haircut” program to provide children in need with a fresh haircut just before the start of the new school year. Through Aug. 15, every time a child, age 18 or younger, receives a haircut at the salon, a free haircut will be provided to a disadvantaged child in the community. Through partnerships with local service agencies and nonprofit organizations, the Hair Cuttery has donated more than 450,000 haircuts since the program’s inception in 1999. School for Advanced Studies named among nation’s elite BY TARNELL CARROLL The only full-time dual enrollment public high school in Miami-Dade County is enjoying top billing this week thanks to prominent recognition in Newsweek magazine’s recently released list of the nation’s top public high schools in 2009. Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School for Advanced Studies (SAS), ranked 15th among public high schools nationwide, making it the highest ranked school in Miami-Dade County to receive the distinction of appearing on the list. The school, designed for academically talented 11th and 12th grade students who seek a rigorous Advanced Placement (AP) and college curriculum, is no stranger to the limelight. In fact, SAS has been on a rapid ascent in Newsweek’s annual top high schools list. Since 2006, the school has risen from 1,210th in the nation, to its current position of 15. And, last year, the school received the highest scores on the science portion of the FCAT exam, surpassing other high schools in MiamiDade County. “The school’s success is due in large part to the support Miami Dade College provides our program,” said Guillermo Muñoz, principal of the School for Advanced Studies. “Our students are very lucky to have the opportunity to attend a high quality institution such as MDC while still in high school. The experience they get by attending college for two years is something that they point to as a key to the successes they have come to enjoy once they graduate from our program.” The Newsweek rankings were derived by calculating the number of AP, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests taken by students at a school divided by the number of seniors graduating the same year. Many SAS students graduate with both an Associate in Arts degree and a high school diploma as a result of success on the AP exams, CLEP exams, and summer school at MDC. Established during the 1988-89 school year as a small program located at MDC’s North Campus, SAS is a combined effort of MDC and Miami-Dade

County Public Schools (MDCPS). Since opening more than 20 years ago, it has expanded to a total of four MDC campuses: Homestead, Kendall, North and Wolfson. One hundred percent of SAS students graduate and continue their academic studies at colleges and universities in Florida, throughout the nation, or at top institutions abroad. Should parents call the police when a child refuses to obey them or borrows the family vehicle without permission, when a teenager punches a hole in a wall or threatens physical violence to a parent or sibling? Today, there is no clear cut answer. Years ago, despairing parents might call the police in hopes that an officer giving the disruptive child a stern lecture might work where they have exhausted every other form of discipline. Parents felt that the neighborhood police department served as a back-up in their arsenal of parenting tools. In return, police departments often obliged and used those visits as a means of strengthening relationships within the community. In today’s world, this model of police/community interaction is no longer valid. An unnecessary call to the police may become a loss rather than a gain, especially for a child’s future. With most police departments lacking the time needed to
mediate non-emergency family disputes, police officers rarely have the authority to exercise the same discretion they once did. The parent should understand that once the police arrive and they determine that a crime has occurred—physical violence, threatening behavior, an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle—the child may be arrested regardless of the parent’s wishes. The child may then have to face formal charges in juvenile court or, for more serious charges, in adult court. If safety of the family or the child is the major concern, a 911 call is still warranted. But the parent and the child should be aware that once that call has been made the decisions about the outcome of the event are in the hands of the judicial system, not the family. An arrest record can affect a child’s future acceptance into colleges, entrance into the armed forces, and career choices. If the police have already become involved, parents would do well to consult with an attorney with extensive experience in the juvenile court system to determine the effect of any decisions on their child’s future. There is a price we pay to live in paradise — hurricanes. Fortunately, we know when a hurricane is approaching and can prepare. Preparations include adequate supplies of food, water, gasoline and cash. The important thing is to protect yourself and the place where you store all the supplies — your home. Protecting your home from a hurricane means wind protection. You must protect the “envelope” of your home. Protecting the envelope means securing all openings against wind intrusion. Our building code requires storm protection to meet minimum standards for positive and negative wind pressure. The pressure of the wind blowing against your windows and doors is a positive wind load. Most of us can understand the importance of protecting against flying debris and the force of a 150 mph wind. What is somewhat more difficult to understand is a negative wind load. As the wind passes around your home, it creates an extremely low pressure on the opposite side of the blowing wind. This negative wind pressure can suck unprotected windows right out of the wall. We found out during Hurricane Andrew that negative wind pressure can even pull storm protection off the wall if it is not installed properly. There are several “code approved” forms of hurricane protection. All products must meet a minimum standard in Miami-Dade County. Products are not tested to the fail point; they are only tested to meet the minimum standard. Forms of approved protection include storm shutters, protective screens and impact windows. Homeowners can use a combination of products, as long as the product is approved and installed properly. Each product has some advantages and disadvantages. The following is a basic list of approved products: • Storm panels — available in aluminum or galvanized steel, relatively inexpensive, but labor intensive to deploy and remove, require storage space. • Accordion and roll-up shutters — made from extruded aluminum, range in price from moderate to expensive, easy deployment, permanently mounted, require no storage space. • Protective screens — made from steel, Kevlar Mesh or polypropylene, moderate to expensive, can be permanently mounted or removable, easy deployment, best for patio

PROPER INSTALLATION IS IMPORTANT Storm protection products, as many other building products, require a building permit. Building permits are a homeowner’s assurance that they have the right product installed correctly. If you’re trying to qualify for discounts on wind storm insurance premiums, get a permit. If you have an insurance claim after a storm, you better have the permit ready for the adjuster. Contractors must be licensed and insured to obtain a permit. Don’t be fooled by some contractors who offer to reduce the price if the homeowner pulls their own permit. This is a red flag that the contractor may not be licensed or insured. A few hundred dollars for a building permit is a small price to pay for what may happen if there is an accident on the job or the contractor disappears. Craftsmanship and customer service are what separate quality contractors from the rest. Windows and shutters can be installed according to the building code and still look terrible. Since construction is not an exact science, all homes have slightly different window and door sizes. Quality contractors should make the product fit the opening, not just assume standard sizes. It’s your home, aesthetics are important.

The symbolic dive took place on his last shift before retiring and signaled the end of his career as a firefighter on Key Biscayne. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I was a child, Miami Seaquarium was the first attraction that I visited. I always wished that I could someday dive in the Reef Aquarium,â&#x20AC;? said Lt. 2010 Volvo XC60 aims at new generation of buyers Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Volvo hit a home run with the XC90 sport utility vehicle; they’ve done it again with the new XC60. The 2010 Volvo XC60 is a new entry in the Small Premium Utility segment, one of the fasting growing markets in the auto industry. It has beautiful styling, all the latest safety technology, outstanding comfort and dynamic performance, and it was designed to capture a new generation of Volvo buyers, while retaining those already loyal to the brand. The XC60’s styling blends a muscular lower body with a sporty coupe-like cab. A new trapezoidal grille holds an enlarged Volvo logo and a strong shoulder line blends into the rear liftgate flanked by LED taillights. The XC60 is available in only one model, the T6 AWD. It’s powered by a 3.0liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 281 hp and 295 pounds-
feet of torque. Power is transferred to the ground via a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission and Volvo’s All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction. Oversize 18inch wheels (19 inches are optional) along with 9.1 inches of ground clearance enable the XC60 to cross terrain that would be impossible in a conventional passenger car. Enhanced Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) is standard, along with a new feature called Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) that allows for more stable driving when towing. The XC60 offers many new systems, including a driver support system aimed at preventing or mitigating collisions occurring at speeds of 19 mph or less. It utilizes a closing velocity sensor to help determine whether a collision is likely. Depending on the closing speed, City Safety will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the XC60 to help avoid a rear-end collision or lessen its impact. The XC60’s cabin reflects the design of the exterior, keyed an ultra-slim center control panel with an optional new integrated navigation screen that’s angled slightly toward the driver. The seats have

been re-designed Volvo’s first panoramic roof is optional and offers increased light and an open-air feeling with two laminated glass panels. The XC60 offers HD Radio as standard equipment, updating radio to digital quality. FM broadcast quality improves to the level of a typical CD, while AM broadcast quality is improved to the prior level of FM. The XC60’s standard high performance sound system includes AUX and USB inputs to allow connection and control of personal music devices such as iPods, memory sticks and other media players.
Sirius Satellite radio with a complimentary six-month subscription and Bluetooth hands-free phone interface also are standard. Audiophiles have a choice between the optional Dynaudio Premium Sound System with a 650-watt amplifier, 12 Dynaudio speakers and Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround.
