Amster Properties receives plaque to Around Town commemorate historic designation Lots of notables in the news these days I

BY GARY ALAN RUSE

n August of 2005, the Mayor and City Commission of the City Of South Miami passed an ordinance designating the Amster Properties (AKA Dorn Brothers’ Buildings), located at 5900-5904 Sunset Drive, as an historic site. Last month, a bronze plaque commemorating the historic nature of the site was officially unveiled in a special ceremony featuring Harvey Amster and other members of his family as well as city officials and other guests. “We’re very proud that the city opted to make our site historical,” said Harvey Amster. “The building has been here since 1925, so it certainly is historical. It really is three buildings—the corner building and the two buildings next to it. We bought the property from Mary Dorn, who is one of the original people who built South Miami.” Amster said that the corner building was originally going to be a bank. It never opened, but the vault is still in there, and will serve as an office for the tobacco store that is moving in there. His daughter, Caryn Amster, described her feelings about the event and its significance as well as her hopes for the future. “It’s not only an honor being the youngest member of the Amster Family,” Caryn Amster said. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– See

Over at Big Cheese I ran into Steve Bateman. He is looking dapper as ever and manages to stay in very good shape. Steve, a former Vice-Mayor of Homestead and who years ago was a Golden Gloves boxer, is married to the very patient and understanding Donna, who keeps him on the pathway of happiness and success. If you see Donna, please tell her that she is a saint. And couldn’t help but see Alan and Diane Schiller having a good time there at Big Cheese and, let’s see, South Miami Mayor Horace Feliu and Palmetto Bay Mayor Gene Flinn, Nick Poulos and real estate guru Chip Black were there, too, sharing some fellowship. James McCants, who works for the city, tied the knot last weekend at the First Methodist Church on S.W. 57 Avenue. His lovely bride Joann was just gorgeous and so was the young lady who immediately preceded her by proudly announcing “The bride is coming, the bride is coming… Did I tell you the bride is coming?” It was a very nice touch to a very nice ceremony and we wish them lots of happiness and love.

And in attendance were: David Walker, Marie Birts, Horace and Seida Feliu, Julio Robaina and other good folks. Roman Compte has got the spirit and has changed the name of his clothing boutique, Trendy Jendy, to So Mi SoU. The very cool clothing store is at 7388 S.W. 57th Avenue (Red Road). Their phone is 305-740-8008. On 73rd Street and nearby you’ll find lots of other really neat, locally owned stores such as Osteria degli Amici, South Miami’s newest Italian restaurant, just opened on Oct. 21 at 7382 S.W. 56th Avenue, right around the corner from Ace Hardware. Isabella Kerdel, wife of one of the owners, was raised in Rome, is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in London. and is helping with the restaurant design and menu. ‘‘We want to bring back the feeling of being in Italy, where you walk in a village and find a really cute place to eat, drink a glass of wine, have a plate

of pasta and talk about the day’s events.’’ From what we hear, they’re packing them in already, which is a good sign, and they even had their first celebrity — Michael Jordan! Fitness Together, personal trainer Scott Baumann’s new place, had a grand opening celebration on Oct. 30 in its location at the new parking garage. The special event was catered by Whisk and more than 100 friends and clients stopped by to say hi. The address is 5829 S.W. 73rd Street Suite 2, and you can call them at 305-665-3694. Massage Envy, at 6927 Red Road, is another great South Miami business that you really should pay a visit to when you’re in the area. Owner Lourdes Martinez is, as her slogan says, “leading the revolution in relaxation.” If you want to get in touch with her, dial 305-662-2622. Ace Home Center (a.k.a.) Palmetto Hardware, has its Christmas trees and ornaments ready for the holidays so get in the mood and visit them at 7325 S.W. 57th Avenue or contact the manager at 305-666-8356.

Couldn’t believe my eyes, last Sunday, when I saw some guy with a small goatee (not sure if that was permanent or a just a weekend growth), sporting a baseball cap, dark sunglasses (the type that FBI agents wear), shorts and tennis shoes without shoelaces, puttering along near the Starbucks by Fuchs Park in a golf cart. So I watched this guy get up to speeds of at least 15 mph, all the while gripping the steering wheel in such a way that one might have thought he was at the Homestead speedway, racing around the track. But anyway, there he was with a grip as strong as Charles Atlas, sunglasses intact, a big smile on his face as he drove around and around and around and around the parking lot looking for the perfect spot to park his golf cart, before he finally decided on one spot that was there right in front of the store. And in the most amazing feat that demonstrates his true driving abilities, instead of driving in head first, he managed to actually back in with-

“This is a great tribute to the building where our lineage started, which even spans before my lifetime. My plan is to keep the building in the Amster name for as long as we’re around. We want to keep it alive for years to come.” A catered reception at Deli Lane, adjacent to the site, followed the unveiling of the plaque gave the attendees a chance to mingle and discuss the event. “This has been a very exciting day today — the recognition of the historical site of the Harvey Amster building,” said Mayor Horace Feliu. “The whole city is excited that this landmark has been kept up. It’s a real gem and we thank Harvey Amster and his family for making sure that the building is one of the landmarks of South Miami. The plaque is beautiful, and the turnout was great. We picked a real winner to make a historic site. I want to thank the Historic Preservation Board for making this a reality.” Ann Marie Clyatt of the city’s Historic Preservation Board. who had helped make it a reality, found it difficult to put her feelings into words. “It would be very hard to describe, because it’s such a beautiful area here,” said Clyatt. “To think that the commercial businesses are that interested in keeping the building intact is really something. Houses they do, but not very often are the buildings designated. I’m very proud this has been done.”

Rotarians are out and about in the community Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB Dedicated Rotarians from South Miami and around District 6990 were on hand for a District Golf Tournament and a Golf Ball Drop raffle on October 31. With 1,820 golf balls dropped by helicopter on the Biltmore Golf Course driving range, the closest to the pin winner was Randy Godard, from the Rotary Club of Coral Springs – Parkland. His prize is a seven day trip to Argentina on American Airlines with hotels donated by Jo Burke. Second prize, a watch donated by Cartier valued at $2,500.00, went to Richard DeWitt, of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables, and third place and 3rd prize, a week-end with breakfast at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables won by Gloria Rossomano, another member of the Rotary Club of Coral Springs – Parkland. Of course, the good news for all is that a total of $45,500.00 was raised by 43 RI District 6990 Rotary Clubs to help meet the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation $100 Million Challenge Grant for Rotary International’s global polio eradication initiative. Speaking of Rotary, Coral Gables Rotarians visited the VA Hospital again for a fun day of bingo and then another party the following weekend at Jackson Memorial Hospital. To add to the festive nature of the outreach programs, volunteers showed up in costumes that also brought smiles to all. Joining Judy Pantoja at the VA as she spread joy to the vets were Yolanda Woodbridge, Sally Baumgartner, Jo Burke, Bonnie Blaire, and Club President Abe Horowitz. These folks and others also helped organize a Halloween party at Jackson Memorial

Hospital’s Diagnostic Treatment Center with the kids of the International Kids Fund and Ronald McDonald House. Among the stand outs at that party were Terry Long, dressed as Little Red Riding Hood: Dick Golden, as The Sorcerer; Bob Schreiber, as Captain Jack Sparrow, Jim Hirschman, as Captain Sparrow’s first mate: and Judy Pantoja’s UBS colleague, Pamela Leslie, as Witchie Poo. In other news, the University of Miami Alumni Association (UMAA) hosted an alumni and parents reception in Madrid on November 4, at the Westin Palace Hotel at Plaza de las Cortes, 7. Two days later, the UMAA traveled to London, together with Humana Europe, to host a reception in Mayfair at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), with lots of UM alumni, parents and friends attending and meeting with Barbara E. Kahn, Dean of the University of Miami School of Business Administration, the featured speaker at both events. International events such as these are the beginning of a global approach to alumni outreach which will continue to expand its efforts during the 2008-2009 academic year with stops in the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. For more information, please e-mail alumni@miami.edu or contact Octavio Colominas, Director of International Alumni and Parent Relations, at 305-2842872 or 1-866-UMALUMS or via e-mail at ocolominas@miami.edu. Also on the topic of UM, The Jerry Herman Ring Theatre continues to be a wonderful community resource offering good live theatre. Next up at The Ring, you will want to attend The Winter’s Tale, by William Shakespeare. The chillingly comedy romance bring jealousy, rage, intrigue, love, revenge and comic mishaps to the stage in one of Shakespeare’s most intriguingly plotted plays. When the King of Sicily suspects his best friend is having an affair with his queen, he orders her to prison in a jealous rage and sends his infant daughter into exile in Bohemia. It

of the aspects you have to live with. I’ve enjoyed doing it all these years.” Mayor Horace Feliu and his wife Seida stopped by to visit with Adams and admire his work, then took in the rest of the artist’s exhibits. Besides the established adult artists, space was set aside for youngsters to try their hand at watercolor painting, hopefully inspired by the lavish display of artwork around them.

The Annual South Miami Art Festival held its 37th show on November 1 and 2 and despite rainy skies on the second day the event proved once again to be colorful and spectacular. With more than 150 artists’ booths set up along Sunset Drive between South Dixie Highway and Red Road, the event was produced this year by Chamber South and was sponsored in part by First National Bank of South Miami with the support of the Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs Department and Tourism Development Council. Besides paintings in many media and sculpture, photography, jewelry, ceramics and other forms of artistic expression, there were also many food and beverage vendors and live entertainment. It seemed a hit with all attending. Douglas Adams, a South Miami native who is still a resident had his artful ceramic work on display again, the first time back to the show after scheduling conflicts with other shows. He has appeared in the festival for 20 years, starting in 1976. He shrugged off the prospect of a little rain. “Been doing art shows for a living for 30 years,” said Adams. “Weather is one

UDB movement under pressure from political contributors R. Kenneth Bluh VIEWPOINT KENNETH’S COMMENTARY The perimeter of our community is under attack again. Lennar Corp., one of America’s largest builders, made application to expand west beyond the current Urban Development Boundary (UDB) and build homes and a commercial complex. The site, called “Parkland and currently zoned “Agricultural, is located on a 961-acre tract. The application seeks to modify the zoning to permit the construction of 6,941 residential units, 200,000 square feet of retail space, 100,000 square feet of medical offices, a 200-bed hospital, 550,000 square feet of industrial/flex space, three schools, a library, a fire station and a police station. The application process will last well into 2009 resulting in an approval, approval with modification or denial. On Lennar’s side, powerful real estate developers, who are heavy political campaign contributors to members of the

county commission, are joining forces to pressure the commission to say “yes. Logic against the proposed UDB expansion: There still is plenty of vacant land within the UDB to build. Population growth in the county is down. We have thousands of unsold condos and foreclosed homes on the market with few buyers in sight. Lastly, and probably the biggest reason, is the lack of arterial roads, expressways, water and sewer services, schools; already stretched police and fire-rescue services — infrastructure inadequacies that we cannot afford to improve. Logic in favor of the UDB expansion: Lennar says the housing glut will be behind us by the time their homes are ready for delivery. There is a big profit in building a large number of homes and commercial properties in one location. Happily, two prominent real estate developers — Jorge Perez, chair, Related Group, and Armando Codina, chair, Flagler Development — are stating, without comment on the specifics of the Parkland project, that it is not the time to be expanding the UDB. The UDB was created to control “sprawling expansion throughout the county. Currently, building west of the

UDB, which is between the UDB and the Everglades, is restricted to one family unit per five-acre parcel. To build west of the UDB requires approval from the county commission. This newly filed request by Lennar is opposed by the county mayor, the county’s planning department, the Tropical Audubon Society, environmental groups, and the press, who fear that once the UDB line is pushed west for one developer we will see the buffer between current development and the Everglades disappear. It’s the reason so many developers are supporting Lennar. A recent Miami Herald article said Parkland residents would be far from concentrations of employment — suggesting that it would take 48 minutes to drive from Parkland to downtown Miami. It takes more than 45 minutes to drive from East Kendall to downtown Miami at 8:30 in the morning. I would say it will be more like an hour and a half drive.

Lennar says that Parkland will have its own employment center and perhaps many residents will drive to Parkland for employment. This I sincerely doubt. Most still will be driving to Miami-Dade’s employment centers. Driving will be a nightmare. It will be years before any form of mass transit will serve Parkland, if ever! Live in Parkland, better to get a job in Naples, the drive time could be less. My opinion? Financial contributions to county commission political races give a better than even chance that, with some modifications, the expansion ultimately will be approved.

Letter to the Editor Island of Barbados marking 42 years of independence Barbados, the most easterly island in the Caribbean chain of islands, stretching from Florida on the North American mainland to the Guianas on the northern mainland of South America, stands in splendid isolation at Latitude 13 degrees N and Longitude 59 degrees 37 W. With 23 kilometers (14 miles) at its widest point and 34 kilometers (21 miles) long, it is a mere 416 square kilometers (166 square miles) in area. After the first English settlement at Holetown in 1627, Barbados remained a British colony until achieving independence from Britain on Nov. 30, 1966, under the then Premier, Errol Walton Barrow of the Democratic Labour Party. Mr. Barrow later became the island’s first Prime Minister. That first independence ceremony was accompanied by the raising of the Barbados National Flag and playing of the National Anthem for the first time. Nov. 30 is celebrated as Independence Day and is a national holiday in Barbados. The day begins with an elaborate and impressive parade and ceremony at the Garrison Savannah. However, celebrations run throughout November and include sports competitions, fairs, community events, and religious services. Barbados is a member of the Commonwealth. The British monarchy is represented in Barbados by the Governor General. The Hon. David Thompson, MP, of the Democratic Labour Party, assumed office on Jan. 16, 2008 as Barbados’ sixth Prime Minister.” As part of activities to celebrate Barbados’ 42nd Anniversary of Independence, the Consulate General of Barbados at Miami will be hosting a “Barbados Week” at its office located at 150 Alhambra Circle, Suite 1000, Coral Gables, during the period Nov. 17-21, from 3 to 7 p.m. each day. During that time, the Consulate will be opened to the public. The Consulate General of Barbados extends an invitation to the community to visit our offices for what we believe will be an enjoyable and informative session in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Visitors will be able to view an exhibition reflecting the history, culture and business of Barbados. Members of staff of the Consulate will be on hand to respond to questions. Children celebrate Halloween while learning about health When a skeleton’s missing a few bones, Minnie Mouse comes to the rescue. Gabrielle Murad, 7, learned about the human body when she attended the recent Children’s Health Day at Baptist Children’s Hospital. The annual health fair, held before Halloween, was created to bring hands-on health activities to children and make them more comfortable with the hospital setting should they need medical care in the future.

Above: Laughter really is the best medicine. Leila Ezzeddine, 4, dressed as Princess Jasmine, took her “injured” bear to the Well Doll Clinic at the recent Children’s Health Day. Baptist Children’s Hospital holds the free event annually to teach kids about their health through hands-on activities. Nursing student Adrianna Diaz, right, gives Princess Jasmine and her bear a little TLC. Children received free health screenings, learned how a CT machine works and created hospital ID bracelets.

Tantalize your taste buds with Indian cooking classes BY LEE STEPHENS Ayesha D’Mello often is mistaken for a Latin American and others assume from her last name that she is Italian or Portuguese. One taste of her food and you soon realize she is from India. Born and raised in India, Ayesha D’Mello has a passion for cooking. She has learned traditional home cooking in India. Her philosophy is to cook quick, easy, delicious and healthy Indian meals, and her recipes are simple to follow and include ingredients that are readily available in Miami. Ayesha has a way to take the most difficult and complicated dishes and create ones that are quick and easy to prepare. “The most fulfilling part of teaching Indian cooking is when I get feedback from my students who tell me that they went home that same afternoon and made the dishes, and they realized how easy, delicious and healthy the dishes were to prepare,” Ayesha said. “Better yet, I love it when they put on their creative hats and come up with some great dishes using my recipes as the base.” Her passion for cooking was evident as early as age 15. “My mom was out of town. My dad’s

friend had invited us over to spend Sunday evening with them. Typically when we go to visit, we prepare some food and take it over. My Dad was worried as my mom was not around to prepare some food. “I decided to jump in and do something.” She said. “I looked in the freezer and there was some lamb. So I decided to cook a curry for the first time without any recipe to follow. To my amazement, and according to my dad, the curry came out better than my mom’s. My dad was so proud of me. His friends enjoyed it thoroughly. From that point onwards there was no stopping with getting my hands dirty and being creative with cooking.” Although she has earned undergraduate degrees in computer science and accounting as well as an MBA, her enthusiasm to impart knowledge of Indian culinary skills is clearly seen by the way she shares the spice secrets of her homeland. She conducts regularly scheduled Indian cooking classes at Ayesha’s Kitchen in Kendall and also organizes private cooking classes for birthdays, clubs, parties and special events where she customizes the menu for the event. In addition, she provides catering services. She also has taught at Florida International

University (FIU). If Indian food intrigues you or you want to cook Indian food for the first time, here is your chance to learn to cook it yourself. Be adventurous and explore the delicious flavors of India. You only need to bring your enthusiasm and a healthy appetite for an experience of fun. You can join Ayesha D’Mello for an exclusive privately conducted Indian culinary experience. You will learn how to cook easy, delicious and healthy Indian dishes from scratch using the freshest of herbs and spices. The class begins with meeting new friends. Then Ayesha introduces the students to Herbs and Spices 101. Dishes vary between classes — most classes include 6-8 dishes. These classes are designed to get you started and beyond. All the recipes can be made with ingredients that are easily available in Miami. Fresh ingredients are key. Ayesha D’Mello has a passion for India cooking. Ayesha grinds her spices just before she is ready to cook thereby bringing out the best and socializing while being entertained. results. Spices do not have a long shelf These classes work great for individual life and should be stored in a cool dry learning, doing something different and place. She does not encourage use of fun with your friends or a birthday event. Catering is available for small and large store bought pre-ground spices and pastes. For best results, she encourages parties. Private cooking classes with cusher students to take control of the spices tomized menus are available for corpothey want to use for a specific dish and rate events, team building, gourmet dinner clubs, etc. grind them fresh. Rock ‘n’ Roll theme set for Baptist Hospital Ball BY BARBARA MOORE Nostalgia, glitter, and rock and roll will bring down the house during the 30th anniversary of the Baptist Hospital Ball on Saturday, Nov. 22, 6:30 p.m., at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa. Dancing around the theme of “Rock ‘n’ Royalty,” the milestone event represents the first informal “jeans and jewels” gala affair for Baptist Hospital. The evening will feature two Baptist Hospital physician-led bands. Ziffer 6, a band fronted by Jack Ziffer, PhD, MD, will play covers of classic ’70s and ’80s rock-and-roll tunes. The Healers, headed by Raul Valor, MD, will entertain the crowd until midnight with Latin rock and fusion music. Dr. Jack and Hope Ziffer, and Tom and Leslie Murphy are the volunteer co-chairs for the annual fundraiser. This year’s proceeds will support Baptist Hospital’s Department of Radiology. New technologies, along with advances in research and education, come with the promise of faster and more accurate diagnosis, as well as better guidance for treatment. To continue excelling, Baptist’s Radiology Department is making the acquisition of new technology a priority. A philanthropic partnership between Baptist Hospital and the residents of South Florida will contribute to a healthier community. Ticket price for a Royal Table is $10,000, and a Rock ‘n’ Roll Table is $6,000. All tables seat 10 people. Individual tickets are available for $500

depending on your particular needs and schedule. Packages are affordable and designed to fit every income level. It shouldn’t cost a fortune to stay fit and healthy! Before you can begin a personal training routine, you must complete a fitness assessment to see where your fitness level is and where it needs to be. The trainer will create a fitness and nutrition plan that is right for you. Age, medical history and any past injuries are also considered when developing a personalized fitness plan to ensure that your work out is a safe and productive one every time. “Most people that come in to inquire about personal training automatically want to know how many days

The program teaches nutrition, wellness and the importance of physical activity through fun activities and lessons. The YMCA is a great place to come and fulfill your entire family’s fitness needs. “This is not the type of gym where you come in and feel uncomfortable and intimidated; where everyone is out to impress, especially if it’s your first time working out,” said Rincon. “Instead it is a friendly and caring environment with trained staff available to make you feel comfortable as you reach your fitness goals. Here at the Y, everyone says hello when you walk in. It’s like a big family.”

It is a place where anyone from preschoolers to seniors can enjoy a multitude of programs and activities in a friendly and nurturing environment; a place to grow and learn, together. “Y Fitness is all about health and living a long, productive life; it’s mind—body fitness,” said Barbara Rincon, personal trainer for the South Dade Family YMCA. “It’s about conditioning our hearts to where we can prevent disease so that when we get older, we can still move around and not have to rely on others.” The South Dade Y has many fitness options, one of which is sure to fit your particular needs. Personal training sessions can be set up at your convenience with any of our talented and welcoming instructors who can give you a targeted fitness and nutrition plan, whether you want to lose a few pounds or strengthen your heart, energize your body or become more flexible. Children to hear from poet Nikki Giovanni at Book Fair BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

Award winning poet and activist Nikki Giovanni will be at the Miami International Book Fair Saturday, Nov. 15, to speak to children about her new poetry anthology Hip Hop Speaks to Children: A Celebration of Poetry With a Beat. The book includes 51 poems from 42 poets and performers including singer and actress Queen Latifah. Hip Hop Speaks to Children was No. 3 on the New York Times Children’s Bestseller list the first week of November. “I’m proud of it,” Giovanni said. “Hip hop is such a cultural force. People have not dealt with the antecedents.” She said she wanted to go back and show how hip hop relates to opera and other forms of music. In the book, she says, “opera shared the stories of the peoNikki Giovanni ple, like hip hop does today. Opera was how the simple truths about the lives of everyday people were told, right in the public square so you knew they were real.” She also said not to be fooled by the rap videos that exaggerate and show bad behavior. Those videos are not the real hip hop because they could not be made in the public square. “In the black community you give a definite shout out to the holiness preacher,” she said. “The slaves weren’t allowed to read or write or have books. They had to talk to them in a cadence with a beat.” Giovanni said the book carries a message that she thinks is joyful. She worked with an advisory board comprised of hip hop poet Willie Perdomo; Tony Medina, a Howard University professor, and Michele Scott, a music specialist. “We cast a wide net. We had 300 poems,” she said. “We kept bringing it down and bringing it down. Once we

had the essence, we put out a call to illustrators. We were looking for something a little more edgy.” Illustrators Kristen Balouch, Michele Noiset, Jeremy Tugeau, Alicia Vergel de Dios and Damian Ward all contributed to the book. The book includes a CD that features some of the artists that created the works while others are interpreted by other artists. Poets such as Nikki Grimes, Eloise Greenfield and James Berry also are featured. Giovanni is a well-known poet, writer, activist and educator. She was born in Knoxville, TN, and now is a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech. She will be at the Book Fair on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Freedom Tower, Biscayne Boulevard and Sixth Street, at 12:30 p.m. Also speaking are Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson touting their hilarious new book Science Fair. The duo co-wrote the Peter and the Starcatcher series. Also speaking is Jeff Kinney, author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, probably the hottest book for kids in 2008. Kinney is promoting his new book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do It Yourself Book. For more information about the book fair call 305-237-3258 or visit <www.miamibookfair.com>.

BY RON BEASLEY More than 50 young patients from Baptist Children’s Hospital showed up at Homestead-Miami Speedway on a bright Saturday morning in early November to take part in the inaugural Rides ’n’ Smiles event hosted by the Southern Automotive Media Association (SAMA). The day at the track allowed young patients suffering from such illnesses as cancer, diabetes, brain injuries, Crohn’s and Colitis to ride in an exotic car and get an up-close look at the speedway’s 2.3-mile road course, while experiencing the thrill of being on an auto race track. Auto manufacturers provided more than a dozen beautiful cars, including a Chevrolet Corvette, Audi R8, Porsche Cayman S, Mazda RX-8, Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG,

Challenger and Viper from Dodge, Ford Mustang Bullitt and a Lexus ISF. Brett David from Lamborghini Miami brought along a trio of exotic Lamborghinis. Even the Jaguar XJR10 that won the 1991 Miami Grand Prix was on display. SAMA members, led by veteran auto racer and television broadcaster Bill Adam, drove the cars for their young passengers. At the end of the day, everyone agreed that the event lived up to its name and put smiles on a lot of young faces, and helped them forget about their illnesses for a day. “The day was a huge success,” Adam said. “The things that we set out to achieve — smiles for everyone — were endless and genuine, and the heartwarming feelings that we all had as we left made all of the effort worthwhile.

Dodge Journey a crossover for the young family Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The 2009 Journey is Dodge’s entry in the midsize crossover SUV class. It’s sporty, rides and handles well, has a nice interior design with lots of room, and has plenty of entertainment options; all in all, a nice car for a young family. The Journey also is nicely styled. It has the characteristic Dodge crosshair grille and a creased beltline that begins at the top of the headlights, rises to the rear and encircles the vehicle. The roofline curves slightly down and the wheel arches are decidedly pronounced. The taillights wrap around the sides and extend into the upwardopening lift gate. Journey rides on the Dodge Global D platform, which is a stretched, widened and beefed-up version of the Global C platform used by the Dodge Avenger

and Chrysler Sebring. Journey is available in three trim levels — SE, SXT and R/T. The SE is front-wheel drive only, while the SXT and R/T models are offered with FWD or all-wheel drive. The base SE model comes with a 173hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The SXT and R/T models have a 3.5liter, 235-hp V-6 under the hood, wedded to a six-speed automatic transmission with the AutoStick manual shift. The V-6 has good power for aroundtown commuting and allows for towing loads up to 3,500 pounds. Standard equipment on the Journey includes cloth upholstery, air conditioning, a “Chill Zone” beverage storage bin; AM/FM six-disc CD/DVD/MP3 compatible radio with six speakers; power windows; power heated exterior mirrors; manual day/night rearview mirror; tilt/telescoping steering column; driver’s seat height adjustment; second-row reclining 60/40 seat, and P225/70R16 all season tires with steel wheels. Options include Sirius satellite radio, fog lights and aluminum wheels. There are sev-

eral option packages available. The interior of the Journey has numerous innovative features to make life easier for a young family. The front passenger seat folds flat for more hauling space accommodating items up to nine feet. There also is a storage bin under the front passenger seat and a storage compartment under the second-row floor. Behind the last row there’s a dual glove box with Dodge’s Chill Zone that

keeps canned drinks cold. Journey also has a standard six-disc CD changer, and offers a hard-drive radio and a rear DVD entertainment system as options. Base price on the 2009 Dodge Journey SE is $19,360.

Miami Vintage Clothing Show promotes re-use, recycling BY LEE STEPHENS Going green to help slow global warming is not limited to construction and energy. Even the clothing we wear can promote conservation when we look to vintage fashion. Miamians will have a chance to see how vintage clothing and cutting edge fashion go hand in hand at the Miami Vintage Clothing & Accessories Show & Sale taking place on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 15 and 16, at the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove, 2985 S. Bayshore Dr. “Instead of recreating what we already have, why don’t we re-use and re-work the original pieces?” said Sheffield MacIntyre, show founder and owner of Back-In-Style.com, an Internet vintage store. “Not only is it better for the environment, but the clothes are also of better quality and better made, and often a lot less expensive.” Contemporary designers often look to vintage pieces for inspiration. Wearing vintage clothing is good for the environment in a number of ways. It recycles the embedded energy that it took to make the garment in the first place, like making the fabric, dying it, cutting the pattern, constructing the garment and adding details. Re-using

clothing helps cut back some of the estimated 4 million tons of textiles are sent to municipal landfills each year which produce methane gas, contributing to global warming. The Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove is sponsoring a special Charity Preview Party on Friday, Nov. 14, 7-9 p.m., offering attendees first selection of merchandise, as well as entertainment and complimentary food and drink. All proceeds from the $25 ticket sales that evening will benefit the Woman’s Club’s projects. The show will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a $5 entrance fee. For more information, visit online at <www.miamivintageclothingshow.com> or contact Sheffield MacIntyre by phone at 305-519-4955 or via email at <dsmacintyre@back-in-style.com>.
