Sheltered bus bench officially dedicated at Senior’s Center
Interval International hosts annual food drive
BY GARY ALAN RUSE first rate sheltered bus bench at the South Miami Senior Center on 62nd Avenue was unveiled and formally dedicated with a ribbon cutting ceremony last Wednesday at noon, fulfilling a promise made earlier by Mayor Horace Feliu, who hosted the mini-event. “This has been a special project of mine, one of my campaign promises that I’ve been working on for a couple of years now,” said Feliu. “I promised the seniors that they’d have a sheltered bus bench so they’d be shielded from the elements, and I’m happy that with the help of Ajibola Balogun, our city manager, we were able to make this happen and turn a dream into reality once again. My vision is to have bus benches that are sheltered throughout the entire city.” City Manager Ajibola Balogun commented later on the apparent speed with which the sheltered bench was put in place once the work had commenced.

As part of his faith he has chosen a Mitzvah Project that is designed to help children worldwide. “I found out about an organization called Soles4Souls,” said Sloane. “It is a program for people around the world and has one goal: to impact as many lives as possible with the gift of

n November 25, Interval International hosted its Twelfth Annual Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive and Decorating Contest benefiting residents of the City of South Miami. More than 50 baskets filled with complete holiday meals were donated by employees of the Miami-based global vacation exchange company and distributed to families in the community immediately following the contest. Interval’s Corporate Marketing department won first place for its rendition of this year’s theme – The EcoFriendly Turkey – with its “Turkey Pointe Village, Florida” entry. The judging criteria were based on how creatively employees incorporated reusable products to support the “green” contest theme. Guest judges included Mayor Horace G. Feliu, City of South Miami; City Manager W. Ajibola Balogun, City of South Miami; Major Bobby Richardson, Chief of Police, City of South Miami; and James Liebl, Supervisor, Waste Services of Florida.

Miami String Project invites you to celebrate the holidays The Deering Estate at Cutler, part of the Miami-Dade County Park and Recreation Department, celebrates the holiday season with the 10th annual "Holiday under the Stars" outdoor concert on Saturday, December 6, 2008, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. This year, the concert will feature musical performances by Doug Cameron, Dana Paul, Wendy Pedersen, Lisanne Lyons, Nicole Yarling and the Miami String Project. During the concert and intermission, guests can tour the historic houses and see them filled with holiday accents and decorations created by the District XII Garden Clubs, the University of Florida Miami-Dade Extension, the FAFCS District, the International Ikebana Society, and SandyScapes. The holiday decorating effort is an annual tradition and is a special project of the District XII Garden Clubs, which includes 26 branches in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. Gulliver Schools honors American Troops on Veterans Day Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB In a moving Veteran’s Day Assembly, Gulliver Schools honored America’s troops with its students and faculty wearing “Support Troops” green camouflage shirts. The shirts, sold by the Support our Troops Club, aimed at raising money to send care packages overseas with the ultimate goal of sending protective goggles for Christmas to 50 soldiers in Iraq. The brief memorial began with Support our Troops Club Vice President Bryanna Nunez, and Secretary Lauren Adames reading poems about bravery and courage. Gulliver’s Head of School John Krutulis then offered a moment of silence for fallen soldiers before an address by Cpl. Carlos Mitter who spoke to the students about his experiences in the army and serving this country. The students honored veterans from the Gulliver faculty and staff. The Coral Gables JROTC and color guard, sponsored by Sgt. Nieves, put together a presentation. The Alliance for Aging packed Parrot Jungle with crowd honoring some amazing people at their annual Positive Aging Awards Dinner on November 19. The Junior Orange Bowl Committee is in full swing with events being held around Miami-Dade County almost every week through early next year. The JOBC Sports Ability Games chaired by Richard Naue will be held Dec. 4 – 6, 2008, with venues at Shake-A-Leg in Coconut Grove, the pool at Miami Springs and Tropical Park in Miami. The JOBC Caroling Competition chaired by Sally Baumgartner will be held Dec. 3 – 6, 7
p.m. on Dec. 7, 3 p.m.; and Dec. 9, 7 p.m.. Schools choirs will compete for cash prizes in front of the 550 Biltmore Building in Coral Gables and the event is free to the public and a great way to get into the holiday spirit. JOBC Executive Administrator, Mark Pidal, advises that volunteers are always welcomed to participate and are especially needed for such events as the festival’s Sports Ability Games. The Games offer physically challenged young athletes from around the nation an opportunity to compete with peers in three days of athletic events from sailing and swimming to track and field. From personal observation, this is one of the most rewarding volunteer opportunities of all. For tennis fans, JOBC Tennis is also looking for volunteers from December 14 through December 23. More than $578,000 was raised this year from The SMART Ride, taking the five year total to over $1.75 Million. Smart Ride is a 165 mile, 3-day bike ride from South Miami to Key West that raises funds for HIV/AIDS. This year’s take was an increase of over 40% from last year and a new record for the ride. As promised,100 percent of all that money will go to charity. GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club participated again in the ride manning two water stops along the route. In fact, Court Collier, husband of Past President Michele Collier even participated in the ride cheered on by his many friends as were so many others. Speaking of GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club, this service club that boasts membership from as all over Miami-Dade County, operates a free children’s dental clinic that provides more than $130,000 annually in free dental care for disadvantaged children. He is happy to report that in this tough economic climate, great customer service still brings in the sales. “The secret to our success is referrals,” said Suarez. “Customers are happy and they tell their friends to come shop with us.” Z Mattress carries all the top brands including Tempur-pedic, Sealy and Serta. His wife, Grettel, also assists him with the business. “My grandfather had a furniture and mattress business in Puerto Rico,” Suarez said. “My father owned four retail stores in the 80s and 90s and now runs my Hialeah location.” The store is located at 5820 S. Continuing with your program long enough to see and feel the lasting changes is the key. Consistency is very difficult if you dread every workout! In addition to being sheltered, the new bus bench is partially set back line of the line of the Senior Center fencing, to give those waiting for busses a little more distance between themselves and the street with its constant traffic. It also allows pedestrians on the sidewalk more room for walking.
Concerned About Market Volatility? Study Your History It happens every time the stock market drops: Investors question their strategy, their luck and their timing — all in an attempt to determine what went wrong and what they should have done differently. But if you, as an individual investor, really want to know how to respond to today’s market decline, you need to look back at yesteryear. To begin with, market declines are part of the investment process. Over the past century, the stock market has averaged one “correction” — defined as a decline of 10 percent or more — a year. Furthermore, on average the stock market has declined 20 percent or more once every three or four years. So, instead of thinking that a severe market decline is a once-in-alifetime disaster that “just had to happen” while you were investing, keep in mind that market declines are normal, fre-
quent and, for the most part, short-term. And if you’re a longterm investor, these declines usually offer an opportunity to buy quality investments at a lower price. What other lessons related to a declining market can you learn from looking back in time? Here’s one: Over the long term, quality stocks have historically outperformed quality bonds. This fact should be of particular interest to you, if, like many investors affected by a market decline, you begin to wonder if you should scale back on your stock investments in favor of “safer,” more conservative vehicles. But look at the numbers: From 1926 to 2008, large stocks returned 10.4 percent per year, long-term government bonds returned 5.5 percent and corporate bonds returned 5.9 percent. While it’s true that past performance is not an indication
of future results, it’s also apparent that if you want to give your money the potential to grow — and grow at a pace that can keep you well ahead of inflation — you’ll need at least some exposure to stocks. While you certainly may want to own some bonds — which offer current income and the ability to help stabilize your portfolio in the short run — you don’t want to let a “down” market discourage you from buying stocks of strong companies and holding them for the long term. Here’s one last “history lesson” to consider: The U.S. economy has proved amazingly resilient. Since the end of World War II, each recession has averaged 10 months — and each economic expansion has averaged almost five years. Recessions often begin and end without warning, so if you take a “time out” from investing in
response to a recession-induced market slump, you could end up missing the beginning of the next market rally. And when the market does turn around, your quality investments are the ones that will likely show the quickest recovery. George Santayana, a well-known philosopher, wrote: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” As an investor, you can benefit from heeding these words, learning from history and not getting too rattled by short-term market downturns. By owning a mix of quality investments that are suited to your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals, you can develop a strategy designed weather any storm that hits the financial markets. Connecting classes to careers key to staying in school R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Thirteen of the top 15 universities in the world are located in the United States. So highly rated, that last year 620,000 students from foreign lands came to this country for a college education. India, alone, sent a little over 84,000 students; China sent 68,000; South Korea, a nation with a population of only 48 million, sent 62,000 students to the U.S. If an Indian family can scrimp and save, and go without in order to send a child to America for an education, why is there so little striving for that same education with America’s youth? Twenty-five years ago the United States could brag that we had the highest percentage of high school graduates in the world. Today, the New York Times reports that we rank 13th among developed nations in the percentage of stu-
dents graduating from high school. South Korea has the highest percentage of high school graduates. The Czech Republic, a former communist nation in Eastern Europe, is in No. 2 position right behind South Korea. I called the Czech embassy and, after being switched between a dozen staff members, learned the reason behind that astonishing feat: “We require all children to attend and graduate from high school.” The Times went on to say that “America is the only country in the developed world where young people are less likely to graduate [from high school] than their parents.” A devastating thought. What went wrong? Are we spending too little on building schools? Are we paying our teachers so little that they don’t care about educating our youth? Are parents at fault for not encouraging their kids to finish school? Are too many kids infatuated with the idea that they can make millions playing basketball or football; become a rock star and make a fortune? I guess we could go on and on looking for excuses,
VIEWPOINT but we missed the real dilemma. We must create an atmosphere where the youth of America see the advantage and “want” an education — not something that is “demanded” of them by parents and schools. Broward County school officials came up with an idea that might be one of the keys to student retention. They are “connecting classes to careers.” How many times have you heard a frustrated student say, “Why algebra? I’m not going to use 4X – y = Z anytime in my life. What a waste!” They can’t connect math with their future life’s plans. “Connecting” is a key. We must find a way to stimulate the student’s mind. I was a commercial banker when my four children were in elementary school. One of my kids asked me to come to school and tell her fellow stu-
dents what it meant to be a “banker.” I remember one kid saying, “Wow, you get to count all that money! How can I do that?” He was stimulated, even if for the wrong reason. We must tie classroom subjects to careers. We show them the school’s basketball team and they relate it to “multimillion” dollar Heat players. We must do the same thing for banking, plumbing, writing for a newspaper, flying an airplane, or selling at Macy’s. If they don’t want it, they will never get it! Technology can help find the best deals Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Many people might feel uneasy about shopping online, but there are more ways than ever of taking advantage of hi-tech and the Internet to shop like you always have in stores, while still finding the best deals. Sharon Harvey Rosenberg knows how to shop. She calls herself the “Frugal Duchess.” She’s always looking for the best deal. Before she even reaches for that checkbook, Rosenberg goes online, sometimes even at the store using its own computers. And here is where technology gets creative and handy. Forget the computer back home. Using your cell phone, you can send a simple text message to “Google” with basic product information. You’ll get a message back with a range of prices from the Internet for that same item. When Rosenberg checked out the price at a local electronics store, she found: “This looks like it goes from $880 to about $2,000, so you’re really talking about over $1,000. This looks like an $1,100 range.” CBS4.Dot Coms’ Dave Game relies on the Internet to save money too. “Technology is helping me do that,”
Game says. “I order an item online and try to get services that let me pick up an item in the store, so that I can have the best of both worlds.” And when he’s at the store, he uses his mobile device to read online reviews. “It gives us the ability to be smart shoppers,” says the long-time technology guru. Meanwhile, back at the store with our Frugal Duchess, Rosenberg says her next secret is “price-match” bargaining. She advises consumers to ask a store manager if they accept other store’s coupons if they’ll match the lowest price. It’s not enough to ask — you have to show them. Bring in a flier or download something from the Internet. But what if you’ve already bought something you find later at a lower price? A local Circuit City manager told producer Gio Benitez that if he finds a cheaper price on a product here or anywhere else with a local competitors, they also will price-match that. Remember, you need to do your homework before shopping at your local retailer. Check out as many ads, coupons and websites as you can for the lowest price. A booklet containing safety planning information for neighbors of Florida Power & Light Company’s Turkey Point nuclear power plant is being mailed to homes and businesses within 10 miles of the plant. The Safety Planning Information booklets are distributed annually as part of a coordinated effort to share information with people living or working near the Turkey Point nuclear plant. The 20-page booklet describes what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency at the plant. It also contains information on plant safety and other measures designed to protect the public and the environment. The booklet is prepared each year by FPL in cooperation with the Miami-Dade County Department of Emergency Management and Homeland
Security, Monroe County Department of Emergency Management and the State of Florida Division of Emergency Management. The updated information became effective Dec. 1. Residents and businesses are requested to keep their booklets in a safe place for reference should they be needed. Anyone living within 10 miles of the Turkey Point plant who has not received a booklet by Jan. 30, 2009, should contact either the Miami-Dade County Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security at 305-468-5400 or the Monroe County Department of Emergency Management at 305-289-6018. Massage Envy... making massage mainstream BY NANCY EAGLETON Massage Envy, in the Red Sunset building in South Miami, has been open for one month and owner Lourdes Martinez’s goal with her new business is to “make massage affordable, convenient and professional.” “I want to bring massage into the mainstream, making it a lifestyle, not a luxury,” said Martinez. “You can have a massage on a regular basis without skimping on the posh atmosphere.” Martinez designed the beautifully warm, spa-style space with mahogany doors, travertine floors and designer furniture. There are ten treatment rooms and one couple’s massage room equipped with state of the art massage tables and luxurious fleece bed coverings. After 16 years in the real estate business, Martinez runs her new endeavor with her husband, Wayne, AKA Bruce Wayne of 97.3, the Coast radio. “I’m sales and marketing and he’s store operations,” added Martinez. Martinez discovered the Massage Envy concept in the fall of 2007 and it took a little over one year for the vision to come to fruition. “I walked into the Falls location last year and was very stressed,” said Martinez. “I had a massage and walked out with a franchise. I loved the idea of a great mas-

said Sloane. “What I am trying to do is collect new or gently used shoes for boys or girls in any size and any style to donate to this organization. I love to play basketball and I would find it devastating if I couldn’t play because I didn’t have good shoes.” Sloane says that he feels that many children every day must be sad watching their friends who are more fortunate while they do not have comfortable shoes, or in many cases, any shoes at all. “It makes me sad,” said Sloane. “You know, when I was trying to think of something to do for a project I wanted to do something that had meaning in my own life. Basketball has become a big part of my life and it makes me feel great to be able to play. As quickly as my feet are growing these days, I have gone through

I can’t imagine not having shoes that fit me well and allowed me to do the things I love, and feel good while doing them.” Sloane hopes that by helping Soles4Souls, his efforts will help others have that same great feeling and that he will be helping to put a smile on their faces. “That would make me a very happy kid,” Sloane said. “Jim Rohn, the famous motivational speaker once said, ‘Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have.’ Just take a little time, look in a closet or two, and if you find some shoes that are a little tight or out of fashion, put them aside for me and I can promise you they will go to a child who needs them. Each additional massage during that month is at the special member rate of $39, making the benefits of massage therapy always within reach. “Your monthly massage can roll over if you happen to miss a month, so you never lose it,” explained Martinez. “You can even walk into a location when you’re out of town and receive your pre-paid massage.” Massage Envy has 840 stores nationwide and locations can be found at their web-
site, www.massageenvy.com. Upon entering Massage Envy, members are ushered away to a special, private waiting area, complete with fruit, cookies, tea and more. Martinez says that “the South Miami business community has been so supportive” since the opening and that “in the first 30 days, the location is the second most successful opening in the company.” Massage Envy is located at 6920 Red Road in the Red Sunset building and parking is available behind that building. They are open seven days per week, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 10 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., making it easy for anyone to find time for a massage. You can even host a private party on Saturdays after 8 p.m. Appointments are recommended, especially if you have an established relationship with a therapist, and walk-ins are always welcome. Miami-Dade Commissioner Katy Sorenson invites the community to join her in the street co-designation ceremony of “Rabbi Barry Tabachnikoff Avenue” on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 9 a.m., at Congregation Bet Breira, 9400 SW 87 Ave. The Florida Legislature approved the street naming for SW 87th Avenue — a state road — between 94th and 95th streets to commemorate Rabbi Tabachnikoff’s contributions to his temple, the Jewish community and the South Florida community at large. State Rep. Julio Robaina also will be in attendance. “Rabbi Tabachnikoff was the mainstay of Bet Breira, a reform congregation, which has been a place of worship for several generations of families,” Commissioner Sorenson said. “Through this co-designation, his spirit will remain close to the temple he founded.” Rabbi Tabachnikoff was the founding rabbi of Congregation Bet Breira, meaning “House of Choice,” in 1975. He was the driving force in the creation of the Bet Breira Day School and instrumental in instilling many synagogue traditions, always emphasizing to his patrons the importance of spirituality, inwardness, and sensitivity. Rabbi Tabachnikoff also reached out to the community by participating in various discussions and shows. For 15 years, he chaired the Jewish Worship Hour, which aired on Channel 10 under the patronage of the Rabbinic Association. As vice president of the American Jewish Committee, he was responsible for interfaith activities and hosted many interfaith TV forums and
dialogue groups with Catholic and Protestant churches in the Miami area. In addition, Rabbi Tabachnikoff participated in the downtown chapter of Rotary, was a chaplain at the VA Hospital in Miami, and was a member of the Bioethics Committee of Miami Children’s Hospital (1993-96). In 1990, he was invited to give the invocation at the opening session of Congress in recognition of his leadership role in the Jewish community and involvement in interfaith affairs. Bet Breira’s Religious School principal, Jeffrey Agron, credits Rabbi Tabachnikoff as a strong influence that made him transition from a legal career to becoming more committed to the temple and his faith. “Rabbi Tabachnikoff was truly larger than life,” Agron said. “He was always building bridges across the community, eager to share his own philosophy and learn others’ as well.” Rabbi Tabachnikoff completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, and later became chair of the school’s Secondary Committee. He was ordained in 1968 at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati and was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity in 1993. Rabbi Tabachnikoff, who passed away in 2003, is survived by his wife, Paula; sons Jonathan and Adam; daughter-inlaw Eva, and grandchildren Ella, Maya, Zachary, Ariel and Jordan. Baptist NICU ‘graduates’ return for annual reunion

Isabella spent the first three months of her life in the NICU following surgery after her birth. The annual reunion provides an opportunity for doctors, nurses, therapists and staff to reunite with their former patients, and to celebrate the giant strides they have made since leaving the hospital. Approximately 400 premature or critically ill infants, many weighing little more than a pound, are treated each year in the NICU.

A native of Coral Gables, Kakouris was born at Doctors Hospital. Former RCMA preschooler wins growers’ scholarship The daughter of farm workers, a Homestead Senior High School graduate has begun her freshman year at the University of South Florida in Tampa, thanks in part to the $3,000 George F. Sorn Scholarship from the Florida Specialty Crop Foundation. Lupe Cisneros, 18, was honored recently during the 65th annual convention of the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association in Naples, where she was joined by her parents, Maria and Atanacio Cisneros, as well as staff from the Redlands Christian Migrant Association, the state’s largest non-profit childcare provider. Miss Cisneros and four of her seven siblings began their education at an RCMA childcare center in Homestead. Cisneros excelled throughout her public school career, graduating among the top 25 in the Class of 2008 at Homestead High. An honor roll student, she worked weekends at a pharmacy to help meet growing financial demands. She also found time for numerous extra-curricular activities, including the MiniCorps service club, soccer, varsity volleyball, French Club Honor Society and Chess Club. During the summer, Cisneros completed a practical nursing program, passed the nursing board exam and became a licensed practical nurse. In August, she started at USF, majoring in nursing. She plans to pursue a master’s in nursing and become a family nurse practitioner. “I just want to help people,” she said. Cisneros’ parents migrated from Mexico in 1989, searching for a better life in the United States. They worked at Homestead plant nurseries as they raised six boys and two girls and still live in a Homestead labor camp. Five of the children attended RCMA’s South Dade Child Development Center as infants and preschoolers. “I was at RCMA from a few months old until kindergarten. I loved it,” Cisneros recalled. “I remember dressing up, housekeeping and nap time. I also did a lot of dances, and I remember story time because some of the parents and people from the community would come in and read to us. Some of my teachers are still there.” Field trips to the Miami Seaquarium, Miami Metrozoo and the circus also stand out vividly — not only for Miss Cisneros but her mother, who was among parent chaperones.

She never would have gotten to go if she hadn’t gone with us.” The Maitland-based Florida Specialty Crop Science Foundation, which awards the George F. Sorn Scholarship, raises funds for causes important to Florida agriculture and the people and communities that make it possible. Sorn, of Orlando, is a retired FFVA vice president and serves on the RCMA Board of Directors. RCMA was founded in 1965 in the Redland farming area of Miami-Dade County to provide children of migrant workers with a safe place to go while their parents worked in the fields. A nonprofit, nonsectarian association, RCMA operates more than 70 childcare centers in 21 Florida counties, serving approximately 8,000 children, mostly infants and toddlers. Children receive the quality care, nurturing and early education they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. English-language acquisition is a priority, and children are assessed three times a year to track their progress in seven key domains of learning. RCMA also operates two charter schools. Agribusiness has been a strong supporter of RCMA since its creation, as neither farmer nor farm worker wants children in the fields. To this day, growers and agribusiness representatives serve on the RCMA Board of Directors and provide financial and in-kind support. Job Corps student makes the most of her education BY LEE STEPHENS Agathe Milhomme, former Homestead Job Corps (HJCC) student, earned a master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Barry University in August. She was a recipient of an academic scholarship. While attending Homestead Job Corps Center in 2002, Milhomme was admitted to Miami Dade College for two years, earning an AA degree. After graduating from Miami Dade College, she went on to Florida A&M University (FAMU) under the tutelage and mentoring of Brenda Jarmon, PhD, MSW. Dr. Jarmon is the former director of the Department of Social Work at FAMU and currently is a tenured associate professor. She is an author and a former Job Corps student. In speaking about Milhomme, Dr. Jarmon proudly says. “Agathe is an outstanding example of America’s best kept secret — Job Corps. I first encountered this wonderful spirit at her Job Corps graduation where I delivered the keynote address sharing my Job Corps experiences and how Job Corps was my ‘stepping stone.’ “After my presentation, she had the courage to share some of her dreams and aspirations with me. The rest is history and I agreed to serve as her mentor,” Dr. Jarmon said. “Her courage of conviction and her strength of resolve impressed me so that I immediately agreed to serve as her mentor. I am so proud of her tenacity, her spirit of belief, and her drive and determination. She is an excellent candidate for the Job Corps Hall of Fame,” she said. “Looking back, I didn’t think that I would achieve what I have,” Milhomme said. “I didn’t want to become a statistic so I took my studies at Homestead Job Corps Center seriously and used it as a stepping stone.” While at Job Corps, she was involved in cheerleading and was secretary for the Student Government Association. She came to Homestead Job Corps Center with her high school diploma. She chose to study Business Technology for her Career Technical Training, which she completed in just one year.

She offers some words of advice to Job Corps students. “Everything of consequence that happens in our lives has a spiritual component. Don’t allow your circumstances to be a crutch that prevent you from achieving greatness. Use your situation as a tool of determination that drives you to move out of your situation bringing forth greatness when achieving your dreams or goals. “Be careful how you treat others along the way, you may be entertaining an Angel.” Milhomme now lives in Delray Beach and works as a CTOSS Therapist for South County Mental Health Hospital working with at-risk youth, challenged youth adolescent’s ages 12-18 who have emotional/behavioral problems and who also have mental health disorders by providing individual, siblings and family therapy services. A healthy baby starts with a healthy pregnancy BY DR. EARL GABB Did you know that approximately 6 million American women are pregnant each year? Of these pregnancies, approximately 4 million result in live births. Studies show that healthy mothers who receive good prenatal care are more likely to give birth to healthy babies. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, it is important to understand what you can do to increase your chances of having a healthy baby. Prenatal care refers to the medical care that women receive before and during their pregnancies. Prenatal care is more than just regular health care, it also includes education and counseling on good nutrition, physical activity, the birthing process and skills for caring for a newborn. Fathers and family members have an important role to play in these aspects of prenatal care. Prenatal care means that your doctor or healthcare provider can monitor for and identify any potential problems early on in pregnancy. Early treatments can prevent and cure problems during the pregnancy and at birth. It is important to know that babies of mothers who do not receive prenatal care are three times more likely to have low birth weight and five times more likely to die, compared to babies born to mothers who did receive prenatal care. A healthy pregnancy actually begins at least three months before a woman becomes pregnant. It is recommended that women of childbearing age get at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily. This amount of folic acid can be found in fortified breakfast cereals. Folic acid can also be taken in pill form as part of a prenatal vitamin supplement. Women should also consume a variety of folates, a water soluble B vitamin. Foods rich in folates include lentils, asparagus, spinach, black beans, orange juice (concentrate is best) and broccoli. Women considering pregnancy should also make sure they are properly vaccinated for diseases that could cause harm to a developing baby such as chicken pox or rubella. It is important that women get these vaccinations before becoming pregnant.
JACKSON HEALTH BEAT Maintaining a healthy weight and nutritious diet is also essential to a mother and baby during pregnancy. Make sure you are engaged in regular physical activity and try to do some form of exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. Ask your healthcare provider what kinds of exercise is safe for you to do as your pregnancy progresses. Do not smoke tobacco, drink alcohol, or use any kind of drugs, legal or illegal, that are not prescribed to you. Be sure to ask your doctor about taking any medication because certain ones can be harmful to the fetus. This includes herbal and “natural” products, too, because they can also cause side effects. Avoid hot tubs, saunas and x-rays while you are pregnant, and do not eat uncooked or undercooked meats or fish. Avoid or control caffeine in your diet; pregnant women should have no more than two servings of caffeine per day. Teas, sodas and chocolate often contain caffeine and count toward your daily caffeine limit. In addition, stay away from chemicals like insecticides, solvents, lead and mercury. Greater Miami Youth Symphony schedules December concerts BY CHRISTINE MOROS Founded as the All-Miami Youth Symphony by Robert Strassburg in 1958, the Greater Miami Youth Symphony (GMYS) was created to foster a love of music in young people and to enrich the cultural life of the community. GMYS is an independent five-level orchestra program dedicated to training young musicians between 5 and 18 years of age. Conceived as a complementary facet to musical instruction in the schools, GMYS has continuously succeeded in presenting high caliber performances and outreach presentations to South Florida audiences. GMYS programs also include eight free beginning instrument classes funded by the Children’s Trust that feed into the orchestra program, as well as a comprehensive three-level music summer camp. Merrick Festival announces the 2008 Caroling Competition for the City of Coral Gables. The event is a long-standing holiday tradition for the city, with six nights of free concerts on the steps of the beautiful 550 Biltmore Way Building. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how Coral Gables kicks off the holiday season, with the joyful sound of children singing in front of the tree. This year, for the first time, the competition is being presented by Holtz Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are excited to have Holtz Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital join our family of sponsors,â&#x20AC;? said Sally Baumgartner, executive director of the event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our partnership gives the Caroling Competition another way to involve the choirs in the community and provides additional outreach possibilities for the schools to perform at the hospital during the holiday season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about children helping children. Holtz Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center is one of the largest childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hospitals in the Southeast United States. Through its experienced medical and support staff, including some of the top pediatricians in the nation, the 254-bed facility provides research and treatment for a wide range of pediatric
medical specialties, with a goal of providing all the support and services parents and families need to raise healthy and happy children. The competition begins this year on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 7-10 p.m., and continues nightly until Sunday, Dec. 7, with performances starting at 3 p.m. Six schools perform each evening. The free outdoor concerts are conducted on the steps of the 550 Building in downtown Coral Gables. Seating is limited. This year the competition welcomes 30 Miami-Dade public, private and parochial schools. They are competing for 21 cash prizes, more than $20,000 contributed by over 30 local foundations, municipal organizations, corporations and local businesses, and with the support of the City of Coral Gables and Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs. The competition is one of the largest events on this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Junior Orange Bowl calendar. The Junior Orange Bowl Festival, celebrates 60 years as the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest youth festival with 22 individual events and the signature youth parade. The competition has been an official Junior Orange Bowl event since 1991. The winners of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s competition return for a short program to accept their awards on Tuesday, Dec. 9, beginning at 7 p.m. Jack Horkheimer, noted â&#x20AC;&#x153;Star Gazerâ&#x20AC;? personality, is master of ceremonies for the presentations.

More than 150 children from St. Alban’s Enrichment Centers in Coconut Grove and South Miami participated in “Greeks and Goblins” on the Coral Gables campus of the University of Miami on Halloween. A ghoulish time was enjoyed by all during the annual trick-or-treating event. Princesses, superheroes and more went door to door at the Panhellenic Building where 14 sororities and fraternities decorated their “houses” for Halloween.

LET’S TALK CARS The Mazda3 has been a hot product for the Japanese manufacturer and it’s the company’s best-selling vehicle around the world. With good reason; it’s a compact sedan that looks like it came out of a European design studio and it has all the latest technology, performance and safety features. The Mazda3 was redesigned two years ago and for 2009 it’s available in two body styles — four-door sedan and fivedoor hatchback — and in three different models: 3s, 3i and Speed3. Both the four-door and five-door “s” models have an athletic look, though the four-door has more of a sedan appearance. The five-door is the sportiest model and has a greater appeal to the youth market. Under the hood, the Mazda3 continues with the MZR 148 hp 2.0-liter
engine for the “i” models and MZR 156 hp 2.3-liter for the “s” models. Both 2.0and 2.3-liter engines have a high-accuracy electronic throttle control and sequential valve timing (S-VT). Optimal adjustment of intake valve operation and a variable induction system (VIS) delivers a strong torque throughout the engine’s rev range. Still, the Mazda3 gets excellent fuel economy, 24/32 mpg for the 2.0-liter engine with manual transmission, and 22/29 mpg for the larger 2.3-liter engine also with a manual gearbox. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, while the Sport AT automatic transmission is an option for the both the 2.0-liter (four-speed) and 2.3-liter (five-speed), and both offer the driver the option of manually shifting gears up or down. The Mazda3 has a rigid body, with front suspension mountings joined to the fender frame by packets. The suspension combines front independent MacPherson struts with a rear multi-link design with a front and rear stabilizer bar. All combined result in a stiffer, safer body and sporty handling. On the inside, the Mazda3 has very

good front and rear headroom and legroom, with reclining sport-type bucket seats up front and a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat.
