Coconut Grove Bank opens Around Town a branch in South Miami Choosing the best BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
oconut Grove Bank, in business since 1926, opened a new branch in South Miami later this month. The branch is located at 6400 South Dixie Highway. Coconut Grove Bank is well known for being a fiscally sound locally owned institution, remaining on a sound financial position through the Great Depression. The bank kept to its core principles even through the heady banking deregulation era and continues to be a force in our community. In fact, Coconut Grove Bank was recently awarded a five star rating by BauerFinancial, the nation’s leading independent bank rating and research firm. “The bank is very Dan Eggland strong financially and we do not have the problems the larger banks have,” says Dan Eggland, bank president. “We have a strong, loyal, customer base. We do our business with Raquel Hickey customers who refer other customers to the bank.” Eggland says Coconut Grove Bank did not engage in the risky practices such as sub-prime mortgages or invest in risky mortgage backed securities that caused so many of the major banks to get into trouble. Okay folks, the drumbeats are getting louder by the day for the city to find a park within the downtown area. Two pieces of property continue to be considered as having the best potential so far: The first one is the Winn-Dixie property and the other being the First National Bank of South Miami parking lots. Both of which are big enough to house an amphitheater, as well as a fitness park, loads of big trees, park benches, a beautiful large pond filled with Koi and nighttime lighting that would make it a must-see destination. “Can’t you see it how much it would benefit the city,” said Jeff Alan, a regular over at Deli-Lane and a proponent for the park. And although you won’t be able to park your horse at the Park, we could learn a lot from our equestrian friends, so all you horseback riders, you know how it is when you and your buds ride up to the saloon and tie up your filly to the hitching post? Well, maybe the city could do something like that, but instead of horses they could promote the use of alternative fuels by setting aside

parking spots for battery operated golf carts, so that Wayne Brackin and his buddies could just drive up in their carts and sit there while sipping on their Starbucks and read a copy of their favorite newspaper. “Do you want a concrete jungle or a beautiful park…?” queried J.C. Nikcarb, who was dining at Town Bar and Restaurant. Golly, is the greening of South Miami right around the corner? The park, which according to the people that are advocating that the city purchase the property, could be called the Bacardi/Wirtz Municipal Park, named after the folks that presently own the pieces of property. And if that name doesn’t work, perhaps it could be named the Wirtz/Bacardi Memorial Park. Tom Byrne, a long time resident of the city and a real real estate pro thinks that a park in downtown South Miami would be “an extraordinary asset for the city and the residents.” “The park would serve as a central point of focus, a place that would draw

people to the city, a place where people could meet and enjoy the ambiance that South Miami has to offer.” Tom continued on and said “I can hear it now... meet me at Bacardi Square.” So, folks there you have it. Right now, it’s just thought, a far fetched one at that, but heck, ya never know. Well, folks, I can’t help wonder if another one of the city’s NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) nut jobs or one of the CAVEMEN (Citizens Against Virtually Everything) will get elected as a commissioner in the special election coming up next month. The city might have enough votes to squash projects that they NOW don’t want. Now, if I was a coach on the team, this is what I would do… Well, since I’m not, I ain’t going to tell ya! My wife, Susan and I went out to dinner at Carrabba’s the other night with Nick and Nancy Poulos. Dinner was great and Ray, our server, did a great job and was very helpful. The wait to get in was relatively short and the food was way better than good and very affordable. If you haven’t been there yet, you should go, you’ll really enjoy the whole experience and by the way, the restaurant is in the city’s new parking garage on S.W. 73 Street. P.S. Couldn’t help but notice Jeanette Navarro, the Human Resource manager at the City of South Miami, who was there with her family. Also, stopped in over at Khoury’s, for a cup of coffee and some dessert. Golly, and I thought I couldn’t eat anymore… Maroun and his family now have just celebrated 15 years of serving some great Lebanese food, and they always take great care of us. You’ve really got to have dinner at Khoury’s — you’ll not only enjoy the food, you’ll love the friendly family atmosphere that they’ve created. Their phone number is 305662-7707. Christmas came early for a Carver Middle School and ACE Academy. Thanks to the Rotary Club of South Miami, Coconut Grove’s George W. Carver Middle School received 360 free atlases for their students. South Miami Rotary Club’s President, Bill Enright, along with Past Presidents Linda Kaplan and Ellen Book helped to distribute the atlases to sixth graders on Friday, November 21, in conjunction with a geography quiz. The other school receiving an unexpected donation was Ace Academy, a school for high risk students whose teachers are incredibly dedicated. The School was in great need of a television set and had been looking several months to have a used set donated. Black Friday held great bargains and, unable to resist a great price on a brand new television,
Lynn Bauer just bought them a 32” flat screen. Along with her helpers, John and Ada Holian and this writer, Bauer happily surprised Cheryl Carrell’s English class on December 1. Carrell expressed her gratitude and was delighted to be able to share an old classic movie on DVD with her students. The DVD had been sitting on her desk waiting to be viewed for a very long time; so, with the new set, Carrell changed the day’s lesson plan to try out their new set. Service organizations are especially busy this time of year with a myriad of outreach efforts. South Miami Rotarians were also busy rounding up volunteers for South Miami’s City’s Parade of Elves as well as preparing for the South Miami Rotary Art Festival in February, 2009. Coral Gables Rotarians are volunteering at the VA Hospital playing bingo with patients, helping walk and play with animals at the Animal Shelter and participating in many other charitable outreach efforts being orchestrated by the Club’s community service organizer, Judy Pantoja. Coral Gables Grillin’ Kiwanians were spotted at the Harvest Festival as well as the Coral Gables Tree Lighting Ceremony. This active group from the Coral Gables Club seem to be everywhere with that grill and have managed to raise a lot of money for charitable outreach through these efforts. If you attend an event where they are selling, you will find they have the best prices and terrific hot dogs and hamburgers. The GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) delivered food baskets all over Miami Dade County that included grocery store certificates to families of the many children who receive free dental care at the Club’s May Van Sickle Dental Clinic. Mitzvah Project to aid shoeless children BY GARY ALAN RUSE Brandon Sloane will be turning 13 soon and will be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah. As part of his faith he has chosen a Mitzvah Project that is designed to help children worldwide. “I found out about an organization called Soles4Souls,” said Sloane. “It is a program for people around the world and has one goal: to impact as many lives as possible with the gift of shoes.” Sloane learned that there are millions of shoes in the U.S. that lay idle in people’s closets. Estimates are that there are 300 million shoeless children in the world. “Soles4Souls has given shoes to kids in over 40 countries on five continents including Guatemala, Haiti, The Dominican Republic, and Uganda,” said Sloane. “What I am trying to do is collect new or gently used shoes for boys or girls in any size and any style to donate to this organization. I love to play basketball and I would find it devastating if I couldn’t play because I didn’t have good shoes.” Sloane says that he feels that many children every day must be sad watching their friends who are more fortunate while they do not have comfortable shoes, or in many cases, any shoes at all. “It makes me sad,” said Sloane. “You know, when I was trying to think of something to do for a project I wanted to do something that had meaning in my own life. Basketball has become a big part of my life and it makes me feel great to be able to play. As quickly as my feet are growing these days, I have gone through four sizes of sneakers in this year alone. I can’t imagine not having shoes that fit me well and allowed me to do the things I love, and feel good while doing them.” Sloane hopes that by helping

Educational system makes it too easy not to learn R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY I received a call from a young student in her sophomore year at Miami Dade College who had a lot to say after reading last week’s column “Connecting Classes to Careers.” Her opening remarks were “Why don’t we just require students to stay in school until they graduate? And, enforce it!” The basic thrust of her conversation was that our school system makes it too easy for a student not to attend school. “Ever see those little roadside signs ‘GED in 60 days’?” GED, she reminded me stands for General Education Development. “It’s a cheap, quick substitute for a secondary education,” she explained. “You don’t learn much with the GED! And don’t let them tell you that getting a fast

high school diploma over the Internet in an acceptable substitute for four years in classroom education.” “Why would an employer ever accept a GED when he is looking for an employee with a basic education?” I asked. “Just about everyone does. Public community colleges will even let you in with only a GED,” was her response. “Quit school on your 16th birthday, or for that matter just stop going to school whenever, and then go for a quickie GED and you can say you have completed high school,” she told me. “It just burns me up that I spent night after night cramming for exams so I could graduate with good grades only to find myself sitting next to a GED’er in my class at Miami Dade. You talk about schools motivating students!” She went on to say that “if you really want an education you can get one in a public high school. But you must really want it! Very few [schools] will motivate you to achieve. That’s the way it is. Run them through and get
VIEWPOINT on to the next kid!” Somehow we must figure out how to make a student want an education. We spend virtually no time with career awareness programs. Students are expected, I assume, to know what’s out there as far as earning a living is concerned. Our youth must be made aware of the benefit of attending a college or a tech school that will prepare them for far better paying jobs than working at a supermarket as a bagboy and hoping that something better may come along in the future. The young lady on the phone was thankful for the fact that her Cuban parents fought to come to the United States. Their drive to seek a better life for their children was the force behind their daughter’s desire for a high school
education and preparation for an undergraduate degree. The goal for this young lady is to keep earning good grades at Miami Dade, and then earn a scholarship to the University of Miami or FIU. She knows where she is going. She is family- and self-motivated. Many kids don’t have that benefit. Somehow we must find the way to keep our kids in school. We must create an atmosphere that motivates our children to see the long-term benefits of an education.

BY GARY ALAN RUSE Khoury’s Restaurant, a gem among South Miami eateries, celebrated its 15th anniversary recently, having opened its doors on October 25, 1993. Most new restaurants close in their first year, so reaching the 15 year mark says a lot about the quality of both its food and its service. Owner Maroun Khoury, who works with his wife Micheline and sister Jenny at the restaurant, believes he knows the secret of their success. “I think what has kept us here is being a family run business,” Khoury said. “And good food, good service and a full attention to the customers at the same time.” Serving authentic Lebanese cuisine, Khoury has been in the restaurant business for the past 28 years and is one of the oldest Lebanese chefs in Miami. He likes the area. “It’s a good place to be — South Miami has grown so fast,” said Khoury. “We are one of the oldest restaurants in South Miami.” Khoury’s wife Micheline says that they are happy to change the food a little bit so the customer can have it the way they like it, but that serving “the real thing” in Lebanese cuisine is part of their success. “Many of our regular customers are Lebanese people,” said Micheline Khoury. “They know the food is authentic and they like to come here. We fix everything fresh each day.” Khoury’s uses nothing prepackaged or commercial, and customers can count on their favorite dishes being as good each time they come in, according to Khoury’s sister, Jenny. “Consistency is very important here,” Jenny said. “And there are some items that you won’t find at any other Lebanese restaurant. My brother uses his own recipes for sauces and spices.” Many of their regular customers are not Lebanese, though, and enjoy the food and atmosphere so much that they have made it their “home,” such as Jose Picos.
“I’ve been coming here for six or seven years,” Picos said. “I make it a regular place for me because of the variety of food that they have. I’m nutritionally inclined, and they’re so flexible to make things, whatever suits the customer, which is to me very important. Where else could you go with this family environment? It’s authentic, it’s traditional, it’s just phenomenal, it truly is. You become family.” Picos not only comes to Khoury’s with his wife for meals, he also brings business clients there and some of them have become regulars as well. Khoury’s has a large menu with soups, dozens of appetizers such as Shanklish homemade cheese or Raw Kibeh, lunch salads and sandwiches, seafood, grilled items, entrees like baked stuffed lamb, and side orders. They are famous for their desserts, such as Milk Pudding with Pistachio, Namora, Baklava and Knafy. Everything is moderately priced. They have lunch specials featuring kafta, lamb, chicken, beef or shrimp kabab served with hommus or Baba Ghannouj, rice and house salad. These don’t take a lot of time, for those on a workday lunch break. Besides non-alcoholic beverages, Khoury’s also has a full bar which includes Lebanese wines and beers, and Arak, a Lebanese liquor. They are also offering free use of a hookah waterpipe after dinner because they are celebrating their 15th. Khoury’s, located at 5887 S.W. 73rd Street, is open seven days a week. Their hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 to 10 p.m. For takeout or catering call 305-662-7707. Task force established to combat illegal agricultural area dumping BY DIANA C. PEREZ The Miami-Dade County Commission on Dec. 2 approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Dennis C. Moss creating an Illegal Dumping in the Agricultural Area Task Force. “Illegal dumping in Miami-Dade County’s agricultural area is a serious issue that merits immediate attention,” said Commission chair-elect Moss. “The property owners in the agricultural area face an undue burden once illegal dumping occurs on the right-of-way adjacent to their farms, nurseries, groves and residences.” The task force will be comprised of impacted property owners and representatives from county departments, agencies, and organizations. I just received this email from a viewer and I thought I would pass it along: It asked, “Why did we bail out the banks, when all they have done is turned around and increased the credit card percentages to the max. My card went from a 12 percent to 29 percent just because I was a day late. Why doesn’t this government go after these banks? When I explained that I couldn’t afford to pay what they were asking, but I was willing to pay a certain amount, they stated that they could do nothing about it. “The coldness of these banks doesn’t merit them getting bailed out. That is why most customers just go into bankruptcy! It’s not that they don’t want to pay; it’s just that what they are asking, most people don’t even make in a week.” The message is probably similar to what you or a friend may be experiencing. During good times, the banks flooded us with credit card applications. And admittedly, we probably opened way too many credit card accounts than we should have. However, the banks probably sent out way too many applications than they should have. Overwhelming credit card debt doesn’t happen overnight and isn’t an accident. The banks are just as guilty for purveying loose credit standards to credit-addicted consumers who can’t stop ringing up more debt than they can afford. So why are the banks suddenly adding on all these extra charges… and why isn’t anything being done about it? First and foremost, the banks are losing billions of dollars because they loaned money to people they shouldn’t have. They’re looking to boost their earnings as much as possible and we’re the only ones they can hit with bigger bills. Second, the rules governing how credit cards are regulated are still in the banks’ favor. Consequently, consumers
aren’t getting much protection from local or federal regulations. Third, it wasn’t an accident that it all happened to begin with. The financial services industries are still spending lots of money lobbying Congress and state legislatures for the weakest rules possible to protect their bottom line. As you might imagine, very few highpaid lobbyists wine and dine Congress in order to promote tougher consumer protection laws. As a result, Congress basically has been ignoring most taxpayers. Instead, they’ve been concentrating on ways to better protect their campaign contributions. Congress held hearings earlier this year to overhaul the credit card industry. Lawmakers heard consumers’ pleas for help. The hearings resulted in a lot of demands for tighter consumer protection laws. Unfortunately, because of lobbying from the industry, coupled with record losses out of country’s biggest banks, nothing was done. All we got was a lot of talk, but no real action. As the new administration comes into office along with the new Congress, this issue may again be pushed to the back of the bus. There are a lot of bigger problems facing us all. But credit-challenged consumers need to be heard too. We need to remind our elected officials that credit card reform also needs to be a major priority. As President-elect Barack Obama suggested, “Let’s help Main Street, not just Wall Street.” Doing nothing just helps the banks keep their abusive practices that got us in this mess in the first place. One Final Thought: Banks are getting billions of public tax dollars in bailout funds, and they’re probably using much of the money lobbying Congress against stronger consumer protection laws. Why isn’t Congress or anyone else limiting exactly how our bailout dollars are being used? Are we getting hit with abusive credit card rates at the same time our tax dollars are being use to lobby against us? There’s certainly something wrong with that proposition.

Charity golf tournament to benefit autism groups BY LISSA TORRES The Fifth Annual Wicho’s on the Green Golf Tournament scheduled for Friday, Dec. 12, at Don Shula’s Golf Club, 7601 Miami Lakes Dr. (NW 154th Street), will benefit Carpe Diem Academia along with two important organizations — the Autism Society, Miami-Dade Chapter, and UM-NSU CARD (University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism & Related Disabilities). Registration and lunch are at 11 a.m. with tee-off at noon. Both benefiting organizations focus on helping children and families directly affected with autism, a lifelong neurological disorder, which is currently one of the most common developmental disorders in the world. Shopping event to raise funds for Liga Contra el Cancer BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD Maggie Maceiras and Georgette Hoyo are hoping enough people will want to mix shopping with the need to help those who suffer from cancer. The best friends are conducting a fundraising event titled “Shop for the Liga’s First Annual Holiday Bazaar” on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Coco Plum Women’s Club, 1375 Sunset Dr. “We are having 40 vendors and six artists,” Maceiras said.” It’s like a secret sale boutique.” The sale, which benefits Liga Contra el Cancer (League Against Cancer), will offer clothing, accessories, home goods, candles, and children’s gifts. “We have someone who will be having a wine tasting and someone with cigars,” she said. “There is something for everyone on your shopping list.” The event also will have a number of speakers who will give short talks while everyone shops. Those who attend can take part in a raffle with some great prizes. A portion of the proceeds from the vendors will be donated to the League. This is the second time organizers have put together this type of event. The first one, in October, was quite successful. “It was a lot of fun,” Maceiras said. “And more than anything, it was fun to see that it was so successful.” She said she went to sleep the night before the October event worrying that no one was going to attend. “At 8 a.m. we opened the doors and until 3 p.m. it was non-stop,” she said. “It was awesome.” It was so awesome that they raised $5,000. And the feedback from those who attended was such that they wanted to try again, but this time, instead of donating the funds to breast cancer research, they switched to the Liga Contra el Cancer (League Against Cancer). The vendors also were in favor of doing a second sale. “People wait to the last minute for Christmas shopping,” Maceiras said. “It’s for a great cause. If you went once and you had a good time and it was a good experience, you’ll tell your friends.” They chose La Liga because they

could see the direct results of how the money is spent. “Everything goes to the patient,” she said. “The League has a clinic. They take patients who have no other recourse. They check everything to make sure you qualify. They give them chemo.” While she has nothing against giving money to research, she and her friend decided on supporting the Liga because it is a local organization. “We feel the money is going to help someone,” she said. “We’ve seen family members go through cancer. We feel it would be better to help the family directly. Cancer is such an unforgiving disease.” Maceiras said the clinic goes through $75,000 in medications each Wednesday, when they do the chemo. “This year they’ve seen a tremendous decrease in donations,” she said. “People who would donate $10,000 are giving $4,000.” The sale will start at 8 a.m. and run to 7:30 p.m. Raffle tickets will be available for $1 each. Volunteers walk, run to benefit S. Florida Transplant Community BY INGRID VEGA Avid walkers and runners laced up their sneakers on Sunday, Nov. 16, in an outreach effort to educate the community about the importance of organ donation with Transplant Foundation’s third annual 5K Miracle Walk/Run at Miami’s Metrozoo. More than 700 participants from across the county, including 25 transplant recipients, joined forces to take this special walk on the wild side “Miracle Walk/Run this year fulfilled our mission to the transplant community in what has been our biggest turnout yet,” said Melissa ChediakWetzel, special events manager for the Transplant Foundation. “Funds raised from this event benefit the local transplant community by providing education, research and assisting patients in financial need,” Since it’s inception in 1987 the Transplant Foundation has brightened the lives of more than 5,000 transplant patients and families by granting special requests that help ease many of the burdens associated with the transplantation process. Volkswagen CC blends sports car with sedan Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Volkswagen has hit a home run with the all-new CC; it’s an outstanding automobile that should solidify VW’s new position as the world’s third largest automobile manufacturer behind GM and Toyota. The new CC — formerly the Passat — is a nice blend of sports car dynamics and the comfort of a sedan, sleekly designed in a very sophisticated package. We liked what we saw from the moment we set eyes on the car, even more so after taking it for a highway spin. Aesthetically, the CC is a beautiful car. It has a bold face with a large VW logo and a cross-strut chrome grille, rides on 17- or 18-inch multi-spoke wheels (there are four designs to choose from) and has a dramatic roofline that sweeps to the rear, with frameless doors and flowing lines. The mid-level beltline visually connects the front wheel wells to the taillights.
On the inside, there’s a sophisticated four-passenger interior, with four ergonomically formed sport seats positioned to sit low and offer strong lateral support. The split folding rear seats are separated by a center roll-top fold-down console. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter are standard, as are chrome finished dials and brushed aluminum trim on the Luxury and both VR6 models. As for power, there’s a choice of an inline four cylinder or a V-6. The Sport and Luxury models come with VW’s 2.0T turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with an intercooler and double overhead camshafts. The advanced four-valve per cylinder powerplant also is equipped with variable valve timing and a direct-injection fuel delivery system, both of which contribute to optimum fuel efficiency. Mated with either a six-speed manual (Sport only) or six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic, the 2.0T delivers 200 hp and 207 pounds-feet of torque. It clocks 0-60 mph in a respectable 6.9 seconds with the manual gearbox (21/31 mpg) and 7.4 seconds with the automatic (19/29 mpg). For even more power, the VR6 Sport

This engine also has variable valve timing, variable intake lengths and direct-injection technologies, and is mated to a six-speed automatic with Tiptronic and delivers 280 hp and 265 pounds-feet of torque. It clocks 0-
60 mph in 6.6-seconds and gets 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Base price on the Volkswagen CC with the 2.0T and a manual transmission is $26,790.

Kids Party raises $300K to aid diabetes research BY NATASHA NORRIS More than 1,000 local children and adults enjoyed an “Around the World” adventure on Nov. 23, without even leaving Miami. Kids Party for a Cure, presented by the Lexi Bayview Residences and Amy and Scott Greenwald, offered food, entertainment and activities from each of eight featured regions of the globe. The fun-filled evening at the Hilton Miami Downtown raised nearly $300,000 for the cure-focused research underway at the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). according to co-chairs Barbara and Dennis Amoils, David and Carol Walker and the Greenwalds. “Once again, I am awestruck with the generosity of the volunteers, committee members, and donors, along with the capabilities of the DRI Foundation special events team,” said David Walker, who also was a longtime chair for Feast Among the Grapes, another event that benefited the DRI. “Having the kids there made it feel so much more important to me,” he added. “As a diabetic, with the potential for my children to contract the disease, I was much more acutely aware of the generational impact that we are facing. The DRI certainly is the Best Hope for a Cure.” Upon arrival, “travelers” received a passport, which was stamped at the entrance to each destination. Cuddly lemurs, kinkajous (honey bears), wallabies (small kangaroos) and marmoset monkeys, provided by Safari Edventures, welcomed guests as they entered Africa to the beat of tribal drums. Hula dancers lured them into Hawaii, where colorful leis and frozen “mocktails” were plentiful. Moving on to USA’s mainland, the rodeo took first place for many chil-
dren, who may have had more fun falling off the mechanical bulls than staying on them. In Australia, robo-surfing offered similar thrills. The scent from an enormous pan of paella encouraged guests to enter the Latin Quarter, and to reach the pyramids of ancient Egypt, the brave walked a tightrope over the Nile River. In Asia, a pagoda provided backdrop to the hilarious scene of children sumo-wrestling in huge body suits. European cafés in France and Italy offered a place for families to rest and recharge for another lap around the action-packed venue. Some of the delicious food were provided by: Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Exquisite Catering By Robert, Donut Divas, Chef David Schwadron Catering & Event Design, Papa Johns, Salad Creations, CrepeMaker, Tania’s Table, Perricone’s Marketplace and Café, Lyon & Lyon, The Produce Connection, and Jennifer’s Homemade. Adult thirsts were quenched by wines courtesy of Cupcake Vineyard and specialty drinks courtesy of Tommy Bahama Rum and Tequila Milagro. Additionally, 40 strolling entertainers from ABC Circus constantly circulated, amazing kids with magic, balloon art, stilt walking, juggling, and much more. The tunes of DJ Irie kept guests moving, as they tried to imitate the steps of a myriad international dancers. On-stage performers included martial artists, contortionists, acrobats and fire-eaters. A high-flying aerialist attracted eyes to the ceiling, and face painting, airbrush tattoos and hair beading brought attentions back down to earth. When the clock struck 7 p.m., a Mardi Gras style conga line of performers

New villagers cookbook features photos, recipes with Miami flavor BY ROBERT HAMILTON The Villagers Inc., established in 1966 and one of Dade County’s oldest historic preservation organizations, has unveiled its newest project, a cookbook titled Cook It Like A Native! The book will be available at the Holiday Open House at the Merrick House in Coral Gables on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2-5 p.m. This cookbook, which retails for $22, will make a great present for any celebration. Cook It Like A Native! will tempt your tastebuds and features beautiful color photography, taken by awardwinning photographer Robin Hill, of the historic sites the Villagers have helped to restore or preserve through grant funding. Some new restorations included are Pinecrest Gardens entrance cottage to the (former) Parrot Jungle and the Mini Train located at Virginia Beach on Key Biscayne. The book includes more than 200 recipes contributed by Villagers members who come from every section of Miami-Dade County. The recipes

BY SUSANNE PINEDO The Roxy Theatre Group is celebrating the holiday season with Holly Jolly Follies, a winter showcase. This winter recital features 550 children, ages 3 to 17 — acting, dancing and singing to a tropical holiday background. The recital showcases the skills and knowledge the children have learned in their performing arts classes since the beginning of the school year. The program includes timeless holiday songs such as Come All Ye Faithful; Run, Run, Rudolph, and Let it Snow. Holly Jolly Follies will take place at the Roxy Performing Arts Center, 1645 SW 107 Ave., on Saturday, Dec. 13, and Sunday, Dec. 14. Show times are 1 and 4
