ormer State Representative Julio Robaina has officially announced his mayoral seat candidacy for the February election: “I have experienced a tremendous outpouring of people calling me over the years to come back to local government and rightly so since this is where it all began. utside of American Airlines Arena in downtown Miami a young man in a giant black and white penguin suit walks around offering concert goers free hugs while wearing a huge sign around his neck that reads: “U R Awesome!” Kemy Joseph began his U R Awesome not for profit organization as a way to pay it forward for the encouragement he received from mentors and friends prior to embarking upon his college career. Today he has over 30 active volunteers. The group recently celebrated their two year anniversary by driving around in the

And it’s always fun, I try to keep it fun.” Fung says he was a skinny kid growing up who was not adept at sports so art was his creative outlet but he only began to take it seriously when he attended college. He received his undergraduate degree from Florida State University as a Studio Art major and went on to the University of Central Florida to obtain his master’s degree in Art Education. Fung was also born and raised in South Florida and today has a Pinecrest studio in Suniland Plaza where he teaches art classes. Although Fung enjoys a light hearted
approach to his work he is also philosophical about his dream profession: “In ancient times alchemists would take lead and turn it into gold. I am inspired by beauty and blessed for the opportunity to take two tubes of paint and a blank canvas and like the alchemists of bygone days, use simple materials to make something beautiful.” The Chamber South’s 40th Annual South Miami Arts Festival will be November 5 and 6 from 10am to 6pm in the heart of South Miami. I was blessed with so much support that when I got to college I decided to do something to give back.” Before U R Awesome began Joseph joined a “Random Acts of Kindness” group during his first semester at the University of Miami. “My involvement with the group really showed me the value of being kind to complete strangers. To be there in a physical space and offer someone a hug, a compliment card or just simple encouragement changed my life for the better.” Eventually Joseph went on to a leadership role in the club and came to realize that if he was to be serious about his commitment to spread positivity in a troubled world it had to develop into more of a personal lifestyle. “I really took the ideals to heart and over the summer worked on being okay with myself to such a degree that I was able to transform and build the confidence to expand the Random Acts of Kindness ini-

The second year we got better organized and worked with the Miami Rescue Mission in what we now call The Great Give Away. It became a personal shopping day where everyone that benefited got treated like human beings no matter where they came from.” U R Awesome has now gone global with Joseph making presentations in New York City recently at the Images and Voices of Hope (ivoh.org) Conference. He also visited Haiti bringing awesome signs written in Creole to share hope and inspiration. “These ideas have been around a long time. Growing up I wasn’t too kind and I realized it was because things I didn’t love about myself translated into things I didn’t love about others. About the Artist: South Miami Arts Festival Poster Artist-Photographer Doug Cavanah is a former photojournalist who studied painting. “Everyone wonders about the likeness of my photography to a painted image. I believe it is simply due to a combination of composition and light. I tend to take photographs as a painter would but there is no enhancement whatsoeverdone to the image.” Cavanah uses a traditional Ansel Adams style view camera shot on film. The size of the film is four inches tall by ten inches wide. “When you start with such a large original you can make nice clean crisp enlargements and that is why there is so much detail.” Cavanah is from Lakeland, Florida and specializes in tropical scenery. Good d News: Banks now favor short sales over foreclosures BY RAY PRINCIOTTA Banks are rethinking their position on short sales verses foreclosures to deal with the rising number of defaults. The South Florida real estate market is dismal. Often homeowners find themselves in an uneasy spot. The bills pile up while the value of their homes goes down. Large sums of money are owed with few possibilities for repayment and the stress and anxiety endured by the borrower are tremendous. At some point the banks step in and want their money. There are no happy endings here. Of the many choices for the borrower and the lender, foreclosure or short sale stands out. In foreclosure the bankers repossess the property, evict the home owner, and assume all of the expenses including damages and vandalism. They must then carry the property until a new buyer appears. This is a lengthy process in which everybody loses. The borrower's credit rating tanks and the banks are out the money owed, while also inheriting new expenses. In a short sale, an agreement is negotiated between owner and lender to quickly offer the property for sale at a

ANIMAL SERVICES OFFERS LOW COST FELINE PANLEUKOPENIA VACCINATION In an effort to raise awareness and aid in protecting the health of cats in its community, Miami-Dade Animal Services is offering the public the Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calici, Panleukopenia and Chlamydia (FRCPC) vaccine for cats. The cost of the vaccination is $5 per cat and is available to all Miami-Dade County residents. Vaccinations will be administered at the shelter, located at 7401 NW 74 St. Vaccination hours are weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Veterinarians will administer the FRCPC vaccine to cats over 4 weeks of age. The vaccine offers protection against Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calici, Panleukopenia and Chlamydia. These viruses can be fatal in unvaccinated cats and kittens. The health of the 36,000 pets Animal Services receives annually is directly linked to the health of pets in the community.

Woman speaks to students about growing up in Pakistan BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
Nighat (Niki) Naseer was thrilled to come to America in 1974. She grew up in Pakistan, one of six daughters who needed to be married. When Naseer and her sisters were born, her father said they were each a blessing from God, but the relatives commiserated because women were seen as a burden. “Thank God there is America for us,” Naseer said. She still visits her homeland to see her family but she is very grateful to be able to return to Miami and the freedoms she has here as a woman. “Even though I have a lot of property back home, I don’t think I can go back and live there,” Naseer said. “It’s very unsafe, especially for Western people.” She has written a book, called Golden Bangles, Hidden Tears, about her experiences growing up in a country that still oppresses women. While the book has been written and professionally edited, she’s still looking for an agent and a publisher. One of Naseer’s purposes in writing the book was to honor her father, who, she said, died because of the pressures of the culture. In an arranged marriage, Naseer was wed to her cousin, who was studying at Miami Dade College’s North Campus. After years of working several jobs at a time, the Naseers saved enough money to purchase a Dunkin Donuts franchise. Over time, they owned many. “We bought the first store in PerrineCutler Ridge in 1983,” she said. At one point they owned the Dunkin Donuts on Kendall Drive just west of 117th Avenue, Kendall Drive and 137th Avenue, in Suniland and Country Walk. She sold the business several years after her husband, Muhammad Naseer, died suddenly. “I wrote in the book, he died for Dunkin Donuts,” she said. “So many we bought and sold. Wherever we go, people called him Dunkin man.” Naseer and her family worked hard at the stores and achieved the American dream, which was quite a contrast from her life in Pakistan. “I had a horrible life until age of 20,” she said. “I describe myself as a Pakistani Cinderella. My husband showed me how

to live a free life.” She describes her life in her book and she goes before school children to talk about how women are treated in Pakistan. “In my country, women don’t have the right to breathe,” she said. Naseer said her sister was beaten every day by her husband because he wanted money from Nasser’s family. Her second sister was almost killed by her husband. “I wanted to go to school when I turned 15,” she said. “I asked my mother please let me go to college for one year. God was on my side. I went for four years. Then the misery started.” The misery came from rejections by potential suitors. She was the third in line to get married but the suitors would pick her younger sisters to court. At one point, things were so bad, she attempted suicide but luckily her mother took her to the hospital. Her mother covered her face for fear that suitors would not want her. Eventually, her cousin asked to marry her and she joined him in America. Naseer goes to schools all over South Florida to give students an idea of how life is in another country. “I tell students, ‘open your eyes,’” she said.

There are dog comfort stations with doggy drinking fountains and water sprays, pooper scoopers to keep the areas clean, and a fabric shade canopy. Also at this site is an information kiosk, park benches, picnic areas, a public restroom facility and parking. A walkway connects all areas of the dog park and makes it ADA accessible.

‘New’ whitefly species spreads through parts of South Florida BY RICHARD YAGER
A new whitefly species is defoliating tropical landscapes from plants to stately palms throughout Kendall and other areas of Miami-Dade County. One of 75 species found in Florida, it is identified as the “Gumbo Limbo Spiraling Whitefly” by Catharine Mannion, a specialist at the University of Florida’s Tropical Research and Education Center in Homestead. “These small, winged insects belonging to the Order of Hemiptera [aphids, scales and mealy bugs] typically feed on the underside of leaves with needle-like mouthparts,” she reported in a recent bulletin. An ominous warning that concluded: “Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking nutrients, causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.” According to Mannion, the first MiamiDade whitefly was collected in March 2009 from a Miami-Dade gumbo limbo tree, becoming the first report of the insect in the continental U.S. About three times larger than other common whiteflies, the new species, believed to have originated in Central America, has spread from gumbo limbo to black olive, copperleaf, Brazilian pepper, cocoplum, wax myrtle, live oak, mango and several palm tree varieties, including areca and coconut palms. “Since the initial find, there were numerous reports in Miami-Dade County, but now it has already spread into other South Florida areas outside Miami-Dade,” Mannion said, emphasizing the “Spiraling Whitefly” species is not the same creature as the “Ficus Whitefly” that causes defoliation and branch dieback of Florida ficus trees. The extent of the gumbo limbo invasion was estimated to effect up to 120,000 trees in landscaped areas alone in county parks, according to Joe Maguire, the department’s

natural areas manager. Maguire said the whitefly invasion had spread widely in Matheson Hammock where part of its 80 acres has large stands of mahogany and gumbo limbo trees. “This current gumbo limbo whitefly species is proving much more harmful to a wide range of plants and trees than the ficus tree whitefly in 2009,” Maguire said. “Even then, it proved extremely expensive ($50-$100 per tree) to provide insecticide extermination measures throughout all areas of county parks.” Without any budget funds available for the new infestation, Maguire said it appears there is “little that can be done for the current infestation other than wait out the natural cycle of survival.” Joseph Flores, a pest and lawn specialist for Kendall’s “One Two Trees” at 7256 SW 42 Terr., established in 1984, concurs. “We are now finding the insect from as far south as Key West to Broward County,” he said. “As far as I know, the first discov-
ery was along the Miami River. It then spread to Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove and Pinecrest. It began to show up only in gumbo limbo trees, but now it’s spread to different tropical plantings, including palm trees.
“Three of five calls we currently answer ask for inspections and treatment of whitefly infestation,” Flores added. “Treatments involving injections of the Arbor Jet system are the best to save the tree.” Do-it-yourself chemical applications ($5.95 or $15.95 at a home supply store) are not as effective as injection because any application mix needs careful measurement. “Homeowners can do more harm than good if they apply the wrong proportions,” Flores said. His firm has contracted for treatments as high as $2,000 with quarterly re-injections that can run up to $500. “I am very concerned; have it on my palm trees,” said Martha Backer who led a tree-saving project in West Kendall on SW 104th Street. “Black gunky stuff on the underside, and my avocado trees have had little white specks flying around for over a year since I saw them up by the Hammock’s Police Station. “Also, you’ll see them up by the gumbo limbo trees lining SW 104th Street. So, yes, we have them in this neck of the woods.”

Late-night driving is an additional factor in driver distraction and risk, because fatigue is more likely and a higher percentage of drivers are under the influence of drugs or alcohol late at night.

However, those who suffer from gallstones may suffer intense bouts of pain as well as life-threatening complications. Various forms of treatment exist, but a cholecystectomy—or surgery to remove the gall bladder—is often the most effective course of action. A new technique called SPIDER surgery, now available in South Florida, minimizes the effects of this formerly disfiguring procedure. To better understand this advance in treatment, let’s take a look at the basics of the gallbladder and gallstones: Where is the gallbladder located? What does it do? This small, pear-shaped organ is tucked under the liver in the abdominal cavity. The liver creates bile, which is stored in the gallbladder. When food enters the stomach, bile is released from the gall bladder to process fats in the food. Bile is a critical component of the digestive process. What happens when things go wrong in the gallbladder? The gall bladder can experience mechanical problems. The bile stored there can eventually clump, crystallize and form stones. When the stones get stuck moving through, the gall bladder can’t empty itself. Sometimes the organ spasms or simply doesn’t work right, and causes pain. Cancer can occur, but it is very rare. Genetics plays an important role in the incidence of gallstones. Yo-yo weight gain and loss may worsen the effects. How are gallstones diagnosed and treated? The most common symptoms are gas, bloating, nausea and pain in the right, central area of the abdomen. A primary care physician or gastroenterologist will typically call for an ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis. One course of treatment uses drugs to
slowly dissolve the stones. In some countries, the stones may be pulverized with sound waves (though this treatment is not approved for use in the U.S.). However, even if these approaches are successful at first, stones can reappear. Because complete removal of the gallbladder is generally well tolerated by the body, surgery is the favored treatment option. The cholecystectomy is performed on some 500 million people in the U.S. every year. What happens in the surgical procedure? The surgery itself is fairly run-of-the-mill. An incision is made in the abdomen, the gallbladder is cut out and removed, and the liver is connected to the remaining bile duct, which gradually adapts to assume the role of bile storage. Old-fashioned surgery left patients with an ugly gash across the belly. Around 20 years ago, a new technique was introduced that made four holes in the abdomen instead. Instruments were inserted through the holes and guided by a camera. The new SPIDER surgery uses a single incision point in the belly button. The surgeon inserts a special instrument into this hole and expands it much like an umbrella, then manipulates the arms of the “spider” to conduct the procedure. In addition to the obvious cosmetic benefits of SPIDER surgery, recovery time is generally shortened because of reduced trauma to the skin. How can I learn more about SPIDER surgery? Take Stock in Children — a statewide non-profit organization with a 16-year history of breaking the cycle of poverty by providing scholarships, mentors and hope — will present its inaugural “Strides For Education” 5K Walk/Run around the state on Saturday, Nov. 19. The event is designed to help raise awareness and funds for Florida’s lowincome and at-risk youth who wish to pursue a college education. Many of Take Stock in Children’s “Strides For Education” 5K Walk/Runs will take place across Florida to benefit local programs in several counties including Miami-Dade. Take Stock in Children aims to have a few thousand participants statewide as a part of this inaugural fundraising effort, which will raise much needed funds to provide college scholarships for low-income students. If you’re not a professional party planner, planning a special event such as a 25th anniversary party or a big holiday bash can be stressful. One of the hardest parts is trying to figure out what needs to be rented. How many tables and chairs? Is a tent needed? And what about those pans that keep food warm? Can you get them in the same place as the chairs? That is where the professionals at Diamonette can help. After 18 years of being a money manager, I have consistently heard how many people do not feel comfortable with their investment decisions. Have you ever second-guessed the investment decisions you have made? Do words like foolish, dumb, wrong, confused, guess, uncertain, frustrated, and overwhelmed describe your feelings? You are not alone in feeling uncomfortable about decisions you have made. Would you like to feel better about your investment decisions? If the answer is yes, then here are some basic steps to consider: Determine if You are a Saver or an Investor If you need guaranteed stability, then you are a saver. When the stock market is positive, many people say that they want to invest and that they are an “investor.” They say that they can tolerate the volatility of the stock market and that their investment time horizon is long term (greater than 10 years). Then 2008 comes along and the stock market (S&P 500) drops 34% and the “investors” now are running for safety as “savers”. Their long-term time horizon has decreased from 10 years to 10 minutes and the risk tolerance has decreased from moderate to minimal. You need to be honest with yourself as to what degree you are a saver or an investor. This is a personal decision that in a perfect world should not be influenced by your family, friends or coworkers.
There are investments for savers and investments for investors. Before you select from the thousand of choices, decide what will make you sleep at night. Don’t rely on a sales rep to tell you what your investment profile is because the sales rep may adjust your profile to fit the suitability of the investment they are trying to sell you.
Focus on the Purpose of Your Investment Do you need to put money away for a rainy day? Make a “To Do List” of items that you want the money to attain such as vacation, education or wedding. Give each item a specific cost such as $5,000 for a vacation. Determine which item motivates you to attain it. Motivation that is ratcheted up is called passion. If you find a passion for an item, that will be your top priority. How quickly you want to attain the item will help determine what investment to consider. Again decide on the specific purpose of the money and then consider your options. Be Realistic with what You have to Invest As an “investor,” you need to accept that you are prepared to lose part or all of your investment. If this risk is not comfortable for you, then you are a saver. There are times when people have borrowed on the equity of their home and invest in the stock market because the potential gains offset the risk of losing their home. People make reckless decisions so that they can attain the item they want quicker than what is realistic. Plan so that if it takes a year to attain an item, you give yourself two years to attain it. If you attain the item in one year, that’s good but don’t beat yourself up if you don’t make your deadline. The important thing is to keep working toward what you want.

Students in several Florida universities can now sell, trade, barter and buy everything from books to bikes via their smartphones, thanks to a new mobile phone application created by students, for students and introduced by Net Element, a technology services provider and Internet publisher. The Yapik app, introduced in September as a pilot at Florida International University (FIU), University of Florida (UF), and the University of Miami (UM), is slated to launch in 12 other schools in January and nationwide in July 2012. As the first location-based mobile commerce application catering specifically to college students, Yapik offers a new, easier way for students to find and barter goods and services within the context of the campus experience. Conceptualized by UM student Sabina Kaplan and University of South Florida (USF) graduate Cristina Dominguez, the app enables students to buy or sell products nearby, chat with other students, view content feeds, create profiles and lists of “favorite” friends. “I got the idea to create Yapik as a college student at UM, because I knew firsthand that in college life, you have to get what you need, quickly, easily and at the right price, or you’ll be left behind,” said Kaplan, Yapik’s founder and current University of Miami student. “College students love their smartphones and love to banter, barter, and buy. New Hyundai Veloster is a three-door coupe with sass Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS Hyundai recently introduced a nifty new car to the U.S. market called the Veloster; it’s a compact three-door coupe with all the latest technology and it’s targeted at younger consumers. Veloster combines the style of a coupe and the functionality of a hatchback, while incorporating a third conventionally hinged side door on the passenger side for safe, ready egress or access to the rear seat. The rear door handle is cleverly hidden to maintain the coupe design. The sporty, sleek design should have great appeal to high school and college age buyers. Veloster’s unique design was inspired by today’s high-performance sport motorcycles. With distinctive black A-pillars, the car’s window glass has the look of a motorcycle helmet visor. Up front an aggressive form of Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille dominates, along with hood scoop detailing and unique LED position lights. Optional
packages add a chrome grille surround, piano black highlights, fog lights and a massive panoramic sunroof. In profile, Veloster has Hyundai’s “Fluidic Sculpture” character lines, muscular wheel arches, body color door handles and mirrors, and wraparound headlights and taillights. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are standard and two types of 18-inch wheels are available. The rear has a distinctive glass hatch, dual centered chrome exhaust tips and a black lower fascia that complements the front. On the inside, the center stack and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporate an available push-button starter. The air vents are inspired by motorcycle tailpipes, while the floor console resembles the seat of a bike. There are numerous interior metallic accents, with alloy pedals and a leatherwrapped steering wheel and shift knob also available. Under the hood, Veloster is powered by an all-new 1.6-liter GDI Gamma engine paired with either Hyundai’s six-speed manual transmission or the company’s first EcoShift dual-clutch transmission. Either way, the combination delivers a fuel-sipping 40 mpg on the highway. The all-new Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is the smallest Hyundai engine to use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). GDI tech-
