T
he South Miami Children’s Clinic has been providing high quality medical care to uninsured children living in South Miami since it opened its doors in March 2007. Like many health care providers in the U.S. who take care of children from low-income families, the clinic is now offering free services from a new specialist: a lawyer. Along with the general pediatric care, including sick visits, well child exams, immunizations and school and sports physicals provided by board-certified pediatrician and medical director, Dr. Tina CarrollScott, attorney Kevin Probst conducts weekly intakes and client meetings at South Miami Children’s Clinic to provide the clinic’s families with free legal services. The goal of this medical-legal partnership, known as the Children’s Health Advocacy Project (CHAP-Miami), is to improve the health and well-being of South Miami children and their families by

Family Partnership. For three hours, on all thirteen lanes, nearly 80 bowlers of varying skill levels helped raise more than $20,000 to support the coalition’s work in South Miami. Each year, The King Pins Challenge is copresented by Splitsville – America’s Bowling Alley and SoMiMAG, a local lifestyle and entertainment publication. Mayor Philip Stoddard and former mayor Rev. Anna Price served as honorary co-chairs for the event. Joining them on the lanes were Miami-Dade County Commissioner Carlos A. Gimenez, former mayor and Chamber South President Mary Scott Russell, South Miami Hospital Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Sparger and City Manager Dr. Hector Mirabile. The thirteen teams included Commissioner Gimenez’s family, Chamber South; the Red Sunset Merchants Association; South Miami Hospital; First National Bank of South Miami; South Miami Police Department; South Miami Police Explorers Post #256; South Miami Senior High School and other SoMi business and community leaders. The coalition sponsored a kids lane, where the youngest bowlers tried their hand at the sport. Entertainment this year included performances by local singer/songwriter Ariel Rose, a 17-year-old vocal magnet student at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School, and local magicians Rick Del Vecchio and Ron Olmsted. Both are members of the International Brotherhood of Magicians Ring 45/Miami and of the South Miami/Coral Gables Elks Lodge 1676. Players and spectators also shopped at a silent auction that included sports memorabilia from All Star Auction, jewelry from Van Galz Jewelry, Romero Britto artwork from Frames USA, and products and services from several local merchants.

Promote local business using traditional media BY JUAN COLOME
Pick up any magazine or newspaper and turn to the back. What do you see? Pages and pages of ads, some big, some small ... and almost all of them ending with a website address. Same with your local newspaper classifieds. The ad gets your attention; the website gives you the details. So what about radio and TV? Surely you’ve noticed how every commercial ends with the invitation to visit “www.somewhere for more information. My kids sure have — they go right to www.pbskids.org and print out coloring pages for their favorite TV shows. This method of using traditional media to promote websites has become commonplace, with good reason: it works. It’s the perfect way to get the most out of your advertising budget. Small print ads or short commercials drive consumers online for more information. An added benefit of using traditional media to search a web site? The naturallytargeted audience ad delivers. Whether by geography or interests, print, radio and TV offer the best sources for targeted audiences of all types and sizes. Your local newspaper is a natural place to advertise if you want to reach a geographically-targeted population. It will have an established audience, documented circulation and measurable ad results. Most newspapers are online, and will usually include your ad in both print and on the Web for the same price. A link to click on makes it even easier for consumers to visit your site, too. Nothing to remember — no typing errors. The online version of a regional or local newspaper is easy to find. Just look at the paper; the website address is probably on the first page. If you need help, visit
www.hometownnews.com Radio is another affordable way to get your message out because each local station appeals to a certain demographic, and, like newspapers, have built-in audiences. Prices can range from a few dollars to hundreds, depending on size and location. Most radio stations now have their own websites to inform listeners of station news, program listings, and promote upcoming events. To find the radio stations for your area, go to http://www.radio-locator.com Broadcast TV might not be in your budget, but cable TV is surprisingly affordable and very targeted with the ability to reach certain demographics as well as by neighborhood or zip codes. A certain number of commercials per hour are usually made available to local businesses for a nominal fee (or even free). As for producing your commercial, there are plenty of small production shops that can help you, and rates are reasonable because there’s lots of competition. For more information, check out an excellent article by Kevin Nunley, “How To Advertise Your Business On Cable Tv— Big Results, Low Cost: http://www.drnunley.com/ARTCL34.htm Always remember the job of your website is to educate, provide lots of information on your product or service and capture your visitor’s email address (with their permission, of course) so you can keep in touch. Don’t let all of your hard work go to waste. Once you get a response, offer incentives, coupons, special mailings, or more information — whatever it takes – to get an email address! That’s when the fun or building a relationship really begins.

Is A Short Sale Right for You? BY PETER B. LAIRD
Recent data indicates that by the end of 2010 nearly half of all property owners in Miami-Dade County owed more on their homes than the properties were worth. That’s 245,530 underwater homes just in Miami-Dade. Statewide, the number jumps to 2.1 million. Do you owe more than your home is worth? Is a major illness, accident, job loss or divorce preventing you from making your monthly mortgage payments? Are you tired of paying for an investment property that has lost its value? You do have options, according to Robert Perdigon, president of Miamibased Perdigon Title Services, a fullservice title company founded in 2002. “In an ideal world, the best strategy is to continue paying your mortgage, wait for the market to correct, let your property appreciate and sell your house when the value has returned, advises Perdigon. “However, we do not live in an ideal world and property owners need to know their options. Your best option, says Perdigon, may be a short sale. In the past few years, short sales have become the leading distressed property solution. “With a short sale, your house is sold for less than what you owe on your

Naples Beach Hotel to host ‘SummerJazz’ concerts
BY KAREN LAMONICA
The smooth sounds of Jazz continue this summer at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club’s 26th annual “SummerJazz on the Gulf” free concert series. Gorgeous sunsets, beautiful views of the Gulf and refreshing breezes provide the perfect backdrop for the fun, free concert series held on the resort’s scenic Watkins Lawn overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. “SummerJazz on the Gulf” takes place one Saturday evening per month from 7-10 p.m. beginning in June. This year’s concerts will be on June 25, July 23, Aug. 27 and Sept. 24. The entertainment lineup is not yet set, but last year’s entertainment included performances by Blue Dice, Late Night Brass, The Mike MacArthur Band and Denise Moore and Then Some. All of the concerts are free, family-friendly and open to the public. Hotel guests will receive complimentary parking at the resort. For those not staying at the resort there will be parking just north of the hotel at Lowdermilk Park, with free parking provided to those with a Naples beach sticker. Free trolley service running to and from the resort also will be available.

Guests attending “SummerJazz on the Gulf” may wish to dine at the resort’s
H.B.’s on the Gulf, the city of Naples’ only beachfront restaurant, which serves fresh Florida seafood and traditional American favorites. Patrons also can enjoy a specialty drink at the Sunset Beach Bar, named Naples’ “Best Beach Bar” by the Travel Channel. Refreshments and grilled items also will be available for purchase at each concert. The 125-acre Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, 851 Gulf Shore Blvd. North, has been owned and operated by the Watkins family for 65 years. It features a world-class spa; an award-winning tennis center; 1,000 feet of pristine white-sand beach; a complete Fitness Center; Beach Klub 4 Kids, a recreational program for children ages five to 12; an Orchid House, home to over 3,000 tropical plants; 34,000 square feet of meeting space; many beautiful outdoor venues; and multiple restaurants and bars. Continually enhancing its offerings, the 317-room resort completed a $22 million renovation in 2010. The multi-phase project included the renovation of guest rooms and suites, and the addition of an all-new $5 million beachfront pool complex. Five things your eye doctor won’t tell you BY DR. ADAM CLARIN
As an Optometrist, there are many standard answers I give patients to questions they ask. However, there are certain things that — although eye doctors won’t say it outright — hold true across the board. Here are five things that your eye doctor will never tell you, with good reason: • You can usually get your contacts cheaper online — This might be true, but unfortunately not at the most popular websites – and you may pay a premium for the lower price. Your eye doctor gets trial lenses based on the number of boxes they sell, so if you buy your lenses online, your doctor may not be able to provide you with replacements for ripped, torn or lost lenses. • You can probably find cheaper eyeglasses than what your eye doctor carries — Lenses have to be cut precisely, with specific curves and measurements; “close enough” just isn’t good enough. You didn’t come to my office to see almost as well as possible, you came because you want clear vision. Oftentimes paying more upfront will include extra services or a built-in warranty. • No matter what you think or a re told, your case is not unique — I hear the same stories all day, every day. Everyone says they had perfect vision until they turned 40. Everyone says they’re “blind as a bat.” It’s rare that a patient walks in and says something we haven’t heard. But these experi-
EYE CARE ences allow us to help you quickly and effectively, as long as we listen. • Not everyone needs a yearly exam — Young healthy people with stable vision may not need a yearly exam. But I would absolutely recommend a yearly exam for anyone over 40 years old or anyone with a family history of any eye disease. However, if you’re between 20 and 40 years old, you’ve never needed glasses and you’ve had your eyes dilated, you probably can come every other year to make sure your eyes remain healthy. • Your eye doctor works for you — Make sure you feel like you got your money’s worth. If your vision isn’t 100 percent crisp or if you have any questions, don’t be bashful, call your eye doctor and schedule a follow-up appointment. If it’s within a reasonable amount of time from your exam, there should be no charge for this. You are entitled to feel confident in the care you receive and the outcome of the exam. We will never be right 100 percent of the time, so we’re not upset to have to see you again. Drs. Adam and Bruce Clarin are Optometrists with Clarin Eye Care in Palmetto Bay. • EDUCATIONAL AND TEEN ADVICE • Toby Rose ASK TOBY It is my freshmen year of college and I am miserable. I really made the wrong choice. I have no friends and feel totally alone. Help, please! • Go immediately to your universitycounseling department. They are there to help you. • Join a club, fraternity/sorority or religious group. There is a group for almost anything. Ask your counselor for a list. • Volunteer; ask your counselor where you can start and force yourself to get out of bed, get dressed and participate. Have you heard anything about a new charter school where the Hebrew language will be taught? Yes, the name of the school is Ben Gamla Charter School, located in Miami Beach. It will open in August and offer a combination of English and Hebrew curriculum. The address is 1212 Marseille Drive. Students will be eligible to start kindergarten and continue through fifth grade. There is a $100 refundable book deposit. I was accepted to a very prestigious Ivy League school and I don’t want to go. I’m nervous and afraid. I just can’t see myself there. What do I do? It is normal to be nervous before you go away to college. I tell those kids who aren’t nervous that they have a
problem because they are the ones that are cocky and really won’t succeed. They party too much and spend too little time on their studies. Students who are nervous and apprehensive about going away have the right attitude. It is a brand new chapter in your life and it is normal. If your nervousness stems from the fact that this school really isn’t for you, then you should not go and you are probably saying what am I supposed to do? In the summer, try enrolling in FIU or Miami Dade College and reapply immediately for the next school year to a school that you feel would better suit you. I know you must feel totally overwhelmed with different emotions. Please call me at 305-238-7737 so that we can talk.
I am a senior in high school and I make $100 an hour fixing computers; why do I need to go to college? I can think of many reasons, but the most important one is to help; you to grow up and complete your education, which by the way is much more than computers. Take business courses and get a degree in business so that you can run your own computer business. You obviously love working with computers and are good at it, why not make some real money doing what you enjoy? Toby Rose is president of Toby Rose’s College Prep. She is an independent college counselor, was a Dade County Outstanding Teacher and served as chairperson of the Dade County School Board Academic Advisory Committee. Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 combines agility with utility Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS The compact GLK 350 is the newest member of the Mercedes-Benz Sport Utility Vehicle family, one that already includes the full-size M-Class, the GL-Class, the crossover R-Class and the rough-and-tough G-Class. Launched in 2009, the GLK is billed as being just the right size for today’s family, whether it’s parking in town while running errands or making a cross-country trip. With a bold profile that suggests power and agility, it looks like a smaller version of the GL. However, closer inspection reveals that it is a modern interpretation of the iconic G-Class, with its angular nose, projection headlights, steeply raked windshield, tightly styled roof and integrated rear spoiler. Smaller and lighter than its SUV siblings, the GLK brings a combination of agility and comfort to the lineup. And as with almost all Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicles, the GLK has four-wheel independent suspension that
makes you think you are driving a sports sedan. The Standard Agility Control suspension provides the benefits of both soft and stiff shock absorbers. Each twin-tube shock absorber is fitted with a hydraulic by-pass piston that acts like a very soft shock absorber to effectively dampen road noise and tire vibration. However, over bumpy or uneven roads, the by-pass piston is inoperable, preserving the steering and handling response of a stiffer shock absorber. With very good ground clearance for offroad driving, a standard roof rack and optional running boards, the GLK is a versatile SUV. Its powertrain features a 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to a sophisticated seven-speed automatic transmission and available 4MATIC full-time four-wheel-drive. Standard equipment also includes 19-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, roof rails, privacy glass and chrome detail touches inside and out. On the inside, the GLK has all the design ambiance and safety technology of Mercedes-Benz cars. The instrument cluster has three analog gauges that show engine speed, road speed, fuel and coolant temperature. A 4.5-inch display in the center of the speedometer is linked to a 12-button multifunction steering wheel that can call up a variety of information such as phone and audio system information — radio station,

CD track or MP3 playlist. Similar to the system on the S-Class sedan and CL coupe, an electronic controller on the lower console works like a computer mouse to provide easy, quick operation of many functions that used to require multiple buttons and switches. By turning and pressing the aluminum controller, menus and submenus on the center-console display are displayed and selected for the audio system, as well as the optional navigation system and
integrated phone. The controller also is linked to the rocker switches on the multifunction steering wheel. Base price on the 2011 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 is $35,500. REAL ESTATE Sure, it’s a legitimate question: Can you sell your home without the representation of a professional real estate agent? The legitimate answer is, of course you can – but that begs the next question of whether it makes sense to do so. One assumes that sellers want to obtain the highest price possible. Otherwise, the home could simply be auctioned or sold to the first buyer who offers. Getting the best price depends upon exposure to the widest, most qualified segment of potential buyers. An ad and a yard sign are not enough to create that exposure. While agents spend untold dollars on advertising and signage,
those only attract about 20 percent of actual buyers, so just one ad and one yard sign will yield even less. So where does the lion’s share of motivated buyers come from? In a real estate firm, they come from cooperating brokers and agents. It’s logical, since serious buyers seek the assistance of agents who save them time and money by matching their needs against large inventories. The only buyers attracted to properties “For Sale By Owner” are ones who want to save the same commission that the sellers do! You can choose to represent yourself in this competitive industry, but it may cost you. Remember that a bargain is not measured by what you pay, but by what you get. Mike and Lynda Morgan may be contacted at the Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate Offices at 12155 S. Dixie Hwy., 305253-2800 or by email at <mmorgan321@aol.com>.

derful smells of aroma will sure bring your mind to another atmosphere. Once your massage is finished, your therapist will let you know and leave the room. Take a minute to re-orient you and to get dressed. Your therapist will meet you in the front reception room. After your massage, it is essential to drink lots water. Your therapist will pro-
vide you with a complimentary bottle before you leave. Make sure to drink more throughout the rest of the day. Later that day, and for a few days later, you may experience some soreness and tenderness. This is not unusual and is normally an indicator of how tight your muscles were prior to your massage. Regular massages will typically reduce any discomfort you feel after each session. Keep in mind, if you are receiving a massage to relieve a certain condition or pain, one massage may not fully relieve it. It will start the process of healing it, but additional massages may be necessary. One plus one equals two? Couples massage can be an exotic experience for lovers. When you and your sweetheart are staying tighter in our couples massage room, you can become keenly attuned to your sweetheart's reactions to every stroke delivered by the therapist in the semi-darkness of the scented treatment room. It does not matter that your sweetheart is lying prone on a separate massage table across your own. You know that he or she is there and your sweetheart's presence can add greatly to your comfort and relaxation. You do not have to show up with a lover just to be able to enjoy a couple’s massage at our store. You can share it with your mother, your sister or your best friend. In fact, a couple’s massage can be a good time for girl talk. The two of you can catch up with each other's lives, gossip or even have a heartto-heart talk. You may also choose to spend the treatment in silence if you really want to take advantage of the soothing relief that a massage can bring
you. And then, you can stop for tea at a tea or coffeehouse to compare notes on the massage treatment. A couple’s massage is a nice thing to share with another person, whether that other person is your lover or not. It is a time for mutual relaxation and for bonding.
