n the last city commission regular meeting, Vice Mayor Josh Liebman chastised Mayor Phil Stoddard and Commissioner Bob Welsh for apparently working together to selectively distribute a city seal-stamped flyer to area residents. What may have started as a simple message from the mayor and Welsh, encouraging community involvement, soon devolved into a possible Sunshine Law violation and seven units of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue on the scene of a possible city block explosion. The front side of the flyer in question offers tree planting services and energy tips signed by Mayor Stoddard. On the back side is a political cartoon designed in part by Welsh, along with editorial commentary related to a range of local issues. When is the current “Interim” city manager, Steve Alexander going to get a contract so that his present title will go from “Interim” (whatever that means) to what might be referred to as (Permanent,) City Manager? There are a couple of things to contemplate: Being appointed interim or permanent city manager in this city means nothing, zero, nada, cero, and did I say “0?” As our esteemed South Miami residents, voters and business people are aware, the City of Pleasant Living, aka South Miami, has had a long parade of folks holding the position of city manager, be it Interim or otherwise.

Fitness franchise raises the bar Steelhouse Fitness gives the fitness industry a makeover. BY LEE STEPHENS
In general, your gym probably doesn’t do anything that is all that different from every other gym or fitness center. Sure, the membership may be a different price, the hours are different, their bathrooms smell nice and their equipment is purple instead of white. But other than provide you equipment and a roof, what does your gym do to actually help you reach your personal goals? Unless you have hired a personal trainer or enrolled in one of their cookie-cutter classes, your membership alone does virtually nothing to help you. Orchestrated by Karelia Martinez Carbonell, immediate past president of the Foundation, guests enjoyed a traditional tea service featuring Cesarano’s heirloom silver tea set with matching silverware and delicious heart scones and clotted cream served on fine bone china. This annual affair celebrates the Foundation’s philanthropists and recognizes donors to the 1926 Society. This year, three individuals were honored as 2013 Life Members for their strong commitment to the Foundation and its mission. Peter Bermont, whose late wife Ronni was the inspiration for the creation of the Foundation; Sandra Fairman, who also supports other league projects; and Andrea Heuson-Sharp, who also serves on the Foundation board of directors. 2012 Life Member Jennifer Press presented Sandra and Andrea with beautiful silver medallions designed with the Foundation logo and presented Peter with stunning silver cufflinks also designed with the logo. Here is a partial list of managers in the past 15 years or so. It is not complete, but pretty close: Charles Scurr, Maria Davis, Yvonne McKinley, Ajibola Balogun, Sandy Youkalis, Roger Carlton, General Randy Witt, Hector Mirabile, Kelly Barkett and the current guy, Steve Alexander. Yup, it’s a bunch of well-meaning city managers that are no longer at the helm of the city. Let’s just stop being polite about this, as the job as the city manager is truly just temporary and lasts a few years at best. The sooner this commission stops screwing around and pretending that its next appointment will be permanent (whatever that means) the better off everyone one will be. Remember the game “King of the Hill?” The goal is to get your guy on the top of the hill and then as soon as he gets there, the goal is to get rid of him and replace him with your new guy. Folks, it was a lot of fun then and from what I can see over at city hall, that’s the way it is. PS. It’s a lot of fun, isn’t it? Should Mr. Alexander be the next non- interim city manager, we hope he accomplishes what he sets out to do lickety split, cuz ya never know when the city of South Miami will be looking for a new STEVE ALEXANDER interim city manager. Happy to see that my favorite elected officials, Commissioners Walter Harris and Bob Welsh, have been acting rather regal recently. They extol the virtues of committed public officials and work hard to make us proud that they are representing us. So, the next time you see either of them, would you let them know that Community Newspapers just loves ‘em both (equally). BTW, Commissioner Harris recently announced that he will be running for office once again with the election being in February 2014. And darn it, Commissioner Bob Welsh’s term isn’t up til Feb 2016 and we’ll have to wait till then to help him out. And speaking of elections, Donna Shelley announced that she is running for the city commission this go around. Donna, a longtime resident of the city and among other things is an accomplished journalist and has written some stories for us. She is a voice of reason, seems willing to work hard and she does listen to people. We look forward to seeing her platform and running into her on the campaign trail. On my lunch rounds, I ran into Frank Maye over at Joanne’s Marketplace on SW 67 Ave and he’s been doing lots of meditation and
watching what he eats. Looking relaxed and vibrant and also lost 10 lbs. or so. Went way out of my zip code and had lunch at the Fish House on SW 56 St and 100 Ave. The Conch chowder was superduper and a small house salad was just enough for my late lunch. The staff is always smiling and happy to take care of you. While there, I happened to see Gary Rackear, a South Miami based attorney, who was also enjoying a quiet lunch. And in the very small world department, a few days later, I ran into him having dinner in West Kendall at Carmines’s La Trattoria. And couldn’t help but run into Vice Mayor Josh Leibman over at Deli Lane, who was having a good time with some friends. I tried to get close enough to hear what they were talking about, but as soon as he saw me he went silent. Darn, where is the NSA when you need them. And speaking of bugs and phones and internet records, I wonder if the folks over at city hall know about the bugs all through the hallways and offices over there. Hmm. I hear that an entourage of naysayers showed up at the Ethics Commission meeting to blast the Chief of Police CHIEF ORLANDO Orlando Martinez de MARTINEZ de CASTRO Castro, who had a few ethics complaints filed against him. As things would have it, the meeting was cancelled and that’s too bad cuz we missed seeing and hearing their irrelevant “mum bo jumbo.” The city and the CRA are finally moving forward on the long awaited Madison Square Project and chose Vitalini Corazzini P.A.,as its architects. According to their press release “The vision for the project includes a proposed mixed-use, affordable housing development which will serve as an anchor at SW 64 St and 59th Place. There is commitment to seek LEED / “Green” building certification. Street level retail provides opportunities for local entrepreneurs and community organizations offered at affordable rates. Following, there will be 41 housing residences consisting of two and three bedroom apartment homes and townhomes ranging from 850 to 1,200 square feet.” Thought of the Day: Action is the antidote to despair. — Joan Baez Got any tips? informative piece, not an editorial piece,” said Liebman. “Further it should be distributed through the postal service to every resident and not selectively distributed. I didn’t receive a copy.” Mayor Stoddard responded by saying that although he originally intended to use the communication budget for the flyer, he ultimately did not. Welsh said he paid for printing costs. He also said that if Liebman had received a copy of the flyer it would have been a violation of the Sunshine Law. The use of the city seal on a document not approved by the entire commission also came into question. “Two people on the commission should not decide the content of a (city sealed) flyer that is really and truly poorly done,” said Commissioner Valerie Newman. “I am embarrassed that people thought this was a product of the city. It was not.” Stoddard implied that the interim city manager Steve Alexander approved the final draft. “I never saw the flyer in its final form,” said Alexander in a subsequent interview with South Miami News. “There are two issues here. One was a newsletter the mayor was sending out which was oriented toward community involvement and education, things like that are acceptable for the seal. Apparently the flip side of the document was more opinionated and I am not sure how it came to be that there were two newsletters on one piece of paper.” Alexander referred legal questions regarding the use of the seal to city attorney Thomas Pepe. He was out of town and unavailable for comment at press time. José “Pepe” Herrera has been village attorney for Virginia Gardens for 19 years and serves as counselor to the South Miami Grey Ghosts soccer team. He said municipalities will often pass ordinances restricting city seal usage and that the flyer is unquestionably in direct violation of the
Sunshine Law. “This flyer guarantees an invitation for scrutiny and potential censorship (of the authors of the flyer)” said Herrera. “Whoever advised them to do this did not understand the dynamics of following government protocol and the repercussions of not doing so. The use of the city seal gives the perception of an official majority vote on those addressed issues, which is misleading. It puts other commissioners in a very awkward position and gives the appearance of violation of Sunshine Law. It is clearly disrespectful to, not only other members of the commission, but to the staff and the general public.” At the meeting, Welsh’s response to the possible Sunshine Law violation of producing a flyer with the mayor was to say: “If he sent it to the print shop and then I put stuff on it and I didn’t discuss it with him and he didn’t discuss it with me.” It was unclear if he stated this as an explanation of the way the flyer came about, or as a hypothetical example for how to get around the Sunshine Law. Herrera said if that was in fact how they planned it it’s immaterial because “you can’t use a surrogate to communicate; someone who serves as a conduit for unification of thought doesn’t cure potential violation of the Sunshine Law. They crystallized their position outside of the public purview.” When Bicycle Bob made it out to one of the residents’ homes who requested a tree be planted on their property in response to the flyer advertisement, the commissioner hit a gas line as he was digging a hole for the tree on that Sunday afternoon May 27. The seven units of the Miami Dade Fire Rescue Department were then called out to the scene at 5811 SW 63 Ave. The team spent an hour on site diverting traffic and sealing the gas leak to avoid a potential gas explosion.

From single-family homes to commercial properties, the relatively low inventory compared to the number of properties that were available just a short time ago has turned Miami into a seller’s market. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that there are fewer distressed homes available. While many sellers find themselves getting as many as 10 offers within just a few days after listing their property, that does not mean that a person looking to sell a property can simply forget about making their home attractive to potential buyers. Curb appeal is still as important now as it ever was and it is well worth taking a little time to seek out a professional appraisal and to make any minor improvements in order to make the property even more attractive. Simple blood tests and/or skin prick tests can be run by your allergist to quickly identify the culprit and determine the best course of treatment. “The most common treatment options for pet allergies include: prescription antihistamines, corticosteroids, decongestants, or leukotriene modifiers. In some instances, over-the-counter medications can be enough to manage light symptoms. The best option for treating severe pet allergies remains immunotherapy,” said to

Immunotherapy treatment is a series of allergy shots administered once or twice a week that deliver small doses of the allergen, typically over a three to six month period. The allergen dose is progressively increased over time essentially training your immune system to recognize the allergen as non-threatening, therefore preventing it from overreacting. Your allergy specialist can find the right medication to treat your range and severity of symptoms. In addition to medical options, a number for lifestyle changes can help you decrease your exposure to animal dander and find relief at home with your pet: • Keep your air clean by using a HEPA filtered air purifier system, changing filters seasonally. • Vacuum frequently using a HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner, which permanently traps airborne allergens. • Clean your home weekly and thoroughly, including furniture and curtains. • Use hypo-allergenic mattress covers and wash all bedding weekly. • Use a nasal lavage daily to wash away allergens that may have collected in the nasal cavity. • Bathe your pets weekly using a danderreducing shampoo, which can reduce the level of allergens by as much as 84%. *Be sure to check with your veterinarian as shampooing too frequently in certain pets can create an increase in dryness, causing the animal to shed higher quantities of dander. • Keep coats trimmed short to reduce the quantity of allergens collected. • Keep pets off furniture or use furniture covers which can be washed weekly. • Do not place litter boxes in areas with air filtration intake vents. • Keep pets out of the bedroom. Contrary to popular opinion, there is no such thing as hypoallergenic dogs and cats; however there are some breeds that statistically produce significantly less amounts of the offending protein, inducing far fewer symptoms and making them appear to be
hypoallergenic. Some of these dog breeds include: the Poodle (and all varieties of cross breeds), Terriers (including Yorkshire), Soft-Wheaten, Kerry Blue, Bedlington and Schnauzers, the Irish Water Spaniel, the Portuguese Water Dog, the Maltese, Bichon Frise, Shih Tzu and Chinese Crested. Among cats, the allergy inducing protein occurs in greater quantity. Luckily there are some low-level breeds including the Balinese, the Oriental Shorthair, the Javanese, the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex, and the hairless Sphynx and Siberian. In addition, there are several factors that affect a cat’s allergen production: males produce more allergenic secretions than females, intact males produce more than neutered males and dark cats tend to produce more than light-colored cats, though the reason is unknown. An allergy specialist can use their training and expertise to accurately diagnose your symptoms and determine the best course of treatment to help you or a loved one manage their symptoms so you can adopt a pet. Summer is time for fun but also time for safety BY CINDY MAGNOLE

It’s that time of year again — school’s out, no more homework and children have lots of free time to have fun. But during summer, with the constant outdoor play — including water activities and, of course, the hot weather — parents should be extra cautious about the hazards to their children’s safety. Here are some important safety tips that can help keep your children out of danger, and out of the emergency room. WATER SAFETY • Never leave a child alone in the water or near the water — not even for a minute to answer the telephone or check the stove. • Children should swim only with adult supervision, even if they are good swimmers. • Floatation devices and inflatable
toys are just that — TOYS. They do not replace adult supervision in the swimming pool, a kiddie pool or a bathtub. It only takes seconds for a child to drown. • If you have a backyard pool or live on the water, you need to have layers of protection to protect your children. These include: window or door locks/alarms, self-latching pool fencing, a Shepherd’s Hook or rescue ring should be available, and have a telephone nearby. Post emergency numbers and your address by a telephone. • No diving into the water — always go in feet first to protect the head and neck. • Select swimming sites that have lifeguards available. Never swim in unguarded lakes or canals because there may be many dangers lurking just beneath the water’s surface. Unseen rip currents in the ocean take too many lives. • Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Due to the time it may take for paramedics to arrive, CPR skills can make the difference between life and death. • If you see someone in trouble in the
water, remember “Throw! Don’t Go.” Do not jump in any body of water to rescue someone because they may pull you under. Throw them a rope or rescue ring. BIKE SAFETY • Always wear a helmet when bike riding. It can prevent head injuries and even death from a bicycle accident. Helmets and other safety gear also should be worn when skateboarding, skating, riding scooters and ATVs. • Stay in control, be predictable, allow only one person at a time on a bike. No towing! • Watch out for hazards such as loose gravel, potholes, broken glass and stray dogs. • Make sure your children wear bright colors when biking. Teach them that just because they see the driver, that does not mean the driver sees them. • Observe all signs, traffic lights, and street and sidewalk markings; ride single file, and use a steady front white light, a steady red rear light as well as reflectors when riding after dark.
SUN PROTECTION • The sun is strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., so try to keep your children out of direct sunlight during this time of day. • Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to all children over 6 months old and reapply it every two hours, or more if swimming. Use sunscreen even when you’re in the shade. • Children should drink plenty of fluids; they are susceptible to heat exhaustion and dehydration. BUG BITE SAFETY • Keep your children safe from bug bites by applying safe and effective insect repellents. Apply those with DEET, citronella and soybean oil to the outside of clothing and exposed skin. • Never apply the repellent directly to a child’s hands and face. Rub it into their necks and ears, staying away from their mouth and ears. • Dusk and dawn are the worst times for bugs, so stay indoors during these times or wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.

Dr. Omar Monteagudo, School for Advanced Studies principal, and Dr. Jeanne Jacobs, president of Miami Dade College Homestead Campus, welcomed Miami-Dade School Board member Dr. Lawrence Feldman to their campus on Monday, May 20. School for Advanced Studies (SAS) is celebrating a 25-year partnership this year between Miami Dade College and the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and SAS recently was named by Newsweek as the “Sixth Best High School in America” in the magazine’s 2013 rankings. Dr. Feldman visited SAS classes and answered questions from the students. He also had his own questions for the SAS students. Dr. Feldman wanted to know what motivates a high school student to take on
the challenge of SAS. SAS students are able to finish their last two years of high school while they simultaneously complete the first two years of college (all for free). The school is known for academic excellence and a rigorous curriculum that requires a lot of hard work and dedication. The school attracts academically talented students who are not intimidated by such a challenge. Ninety percent of the SAS Class of 2013 received an Associate in Arts degree from Miami Dade College a month before their high school graduation and most of the graduating class was accepted at top tier universities all around the United States. Gulliver’s Eco-Cooker team wins Spirit of Innovation Challenge BY DONNA VAN DER DIJS
Gulliver Preparatory School’s engineering team has been selected as one of four national 2013 Conrad Foundation Spirit of Innovation Challenge winners. Each winning team received an innovation grant of $10,000 to continue product development and a one-year affiliate membership to Sigma Xi, the scientific research society. Gulliver’s engineering team won in the challenge’s Energy and Environment category with its Eco-Cooker. The project was inspired by Garandia, a poor village outside

of Yola, Nigeria, where excessive woodburning cooking has led to deforestation. Garandians have no access to alternative sources for fuel such as gas and electricity. The Eco-Cooker allows for safe and effective cooking without the need for firewood. It uses cattle dung, which is rich in methane, to produce biogas as a clean fuel source for heating and cooking. Because most Garandians make a living as cattle herders, there’s plenty of animal waste around the village. The portable cook stove is easy to use and maintain, will help manage the animal waste and contains an expandable biogas production system. “It’s an incredible honor for our students to be recognized by the Conrad Foundation for the second year in a row,” said John Krutulis, Gulliver’s director and head of schools. “We are proud of our students and their coach, Claude Charron.” The Conrad Foundation’s Spirit of Innovation Challenge celebrates the life and entrepreneurial spirit of astronaut Pete Conrad, the third man to walk on the Moon. Presented by Lockheed Martin and Battelle, the annual program is a multiphase business and technical plan competition, which is free and open to students ages 13-18 from around the world.

Over seven months, students use science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills along with creativity, collaboration and entrepreneurship to develop innovative products and services in one of four categories: Aerospace and Aviation, Cybertechnology and Security, Energy and Environment or Health and Nutrition. This year, 20 finalist teams were selected from a pool of more than 230 entries from 44 countries and throughout the United States. In Miami, the Ygrene program has funded its first hurricane resiliency project on a commercial property owned by urban development company Barlington Group, which worked with New Holland PACE Consulting Inc. on the project. A second project is approved and underway. Both properties will receive hurricane resiliency upgrades — including impact-resistant and energy efficient storefronts, windows, and doors — expected to reduce the building owners’ hurricane insurance and energy costs while simultaneously improving the value of each property. These projects total more than $210,000, part of Ygrene’s growing pipeline of over $40 million in PACE-related projects in the region. “Ygrene’s comprehensive PACE program offered us the unique opportunity to enhance our properties without diverting resources away from core operations,” said Martin Pinilla, founder of Barlington Group. “We’ve been consistently impressed with Ygrene’s Florida team, including their work to connect us with nearby contractors to ensure our upgrades are not only being completed by trained professionals, but also creating local jobs in the process.” “This is a breakthrough event for the state of Florida and the nation — one that demonstrates the path toward economic revitalization and reduced energy consump-

Miami Children’s Hospital launches free interactive smartphone app BY JENNIFER CAMINAS
Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH) is the first hospital in the country to launch a smartphone app for Apple iOS devices that uses Wi-Fi triangulation technology to offer patients the convenience of an on-campus indoor GPS-like way-finding system, along with other service enhancements. Through the Fit4KidsCare app, families now can connect to MCH’s interactive way-finding campus maps, purchase items from the MCH gift shop, order room service and much more. The app originally was launched in 2010, initially providing families with ER and Urgent Care wait times, directions to the main hospital and its nine outpatient center locations as well as physician directories. In 2013, the hospital updated its app using mobile-software company Meridian’s software development kits for navigation and indoor positioning. Additionally, the hospital also used Cisco’s 802.11n Wi-Fi network and the Mobility Services Engine for computing location information in real time from hundreds of Wi-Fi access points, exposing them centrally to third party software platforms like Meridian. “Miami Children’s Hospital is committed to optimizing the patient and family
experience,” said Ed Martinez, chief information officer. “The new app is one of many tools for supporting families in navigating the campus. It supplements a colorful, child-friendly interior way-finding system that uses colors and animal images as visual cues as well as staff commitment to proactive way-finding support. “In our increasingly technically connected world, the new app adds a new dimension to the process,” he said. Once downloaded, the app’s new, indoor, way-finding feature provides smartphone users with an internal view of the main hospital’s layout. Using indoor positioning, it locates the users on the smart phone and provides step-by-step directions to any desired location within the hospital, similar to a GPS guidance system. The technology is an enhancement to MCH’s dedication to excellence in customer service. The application offers inpatients and their families the ability to order room service from the hospital cafeteria and order gift shop items straight from a mobile device. Residing on the same familiar corner since 1952, First National Bank of South Miami (FNBSM) continues serving the community of South Miami with stability and originality. Executive vice president Veronica Flores believes that this consistency makes the bank unique. “We’ve had the same ownership and have been in the same corner [5750 Sunset Dr.] for 60 years. In terms of banking that’s quite unusual, especially in South Florida,” Flores said. The bank’s consistent location and ownership parallels its desire to provide consistent service. Flores shares that FNBSM is not merely a “transactional bank.” “We do not just want to do one transaction for you. We want to do your loans, your deposit accounts, your children’s loans, and your youth savings accounts,” Flores said. FNBSM prides itself in sustaining generations of customers. Flores said that some of the bank’s clients have banked there since the 1950s. Additionally, although the bank is one of the first community banks of South Florida, it seeks to fight the reputation of being simply old-fashioned. “We have had the reputation of just being
your father’s and grandfather’s bank and of not knowing much about technology,” Flores said. “But we are the first community bank here to have a YouTube channel.” Additionally, Flores shares that the bank has all “the bells and whistles” of high-tech service including mobile banking as well as an iPhone and Android app. “One of the things that we are coming up with this summer is the ability to take a picture of your deposit with your phone and send it in,” Flores said. “We are also launching bank-to-bank transfers soon.” Another unique aspect of FNBSM is the bank’s desire to encourage and support the personalities of its employees. “We encourage and embrace for all of our officers to have their personalities show through their work. Most banks work in a more corporate environment, where you have to be very sterile and scripted,” Flores said. “Here, we give our officers a lot more autonomy. If you go into any of our officer’s
work areas, you’ll see their interests shine through, whether that be pictures of horses or a collection of clocks.” In addition to personable employees, FNBSM has an involved history of commitment to the South Miami community. “We were the first bank to have a registered art gallery within the bank. Acrobats run the motorcycle up and down the incline wires they perform stunts atop the motorcycle while balancing it on the cable. The show then switches gears to fun and laughs with “Tony and his Comedy Trampoline.” The exciting finale of the show features the heart-stopping feats in the Motorcycle Globe of Death, which takes place inside a 14-foot diameter steel mesh cage where two motorcycles crisscross and loop around each other at high-speed. After enjoying the exhilarating performance, guests can experience the park’s fun
and cool alternatives to beat the heat. Cool off with a 55-degree splash from Lolita at the Killer Whale Show. Get a blast from the water cannons at Salty’s Pirate Playground. The American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) recently named local businesswoman Kelley Rice-Schild as a recipient of the Joe Warner Patient Advocacy Award at its 2013 Congressional Briefing event in Washington, DC. The Joe Warner award honors AHCA/NCAL members who have worked diligently to educate members of Congress about the needs of longterm care patients and residents, and who have worked to advance quality care in the long term and post-acute care community. Kelley Rice-Schild is executive director of Floridean Healthcare, which operates the oldest nursing home (The Floridean) in Miami. She also is owner/partner in Partner Care Pharmacy in South Florida. RiceSchild comes from a background of longterm care, growing up in the familyowned facility that was established by her grandparents. She began working in Floridean’s activities department at the age of 18, and today continues the tradition of excellent service, leadership and responsibility to the community. Her grandfather, Jack Rice, also founded Florida Health Care Association (FHCA), the state’s first and largest advocacy organization for longterm care providers. Rice-Schild is a past FHCA president and has received numerous awards for her service to the longterm care profession, including FHCA’s highest honor, the Walter M. Johnson Circle of Excellence Award, as well as Nursing Home Administratorof the Year and the Arthur H. Harris Government Services Award.
Throughout her 20-plus years of service to longterm care, Rice-Schild has been a long-standing advocate for providers and the residents under their care. She has helped to educate numerous federal and state legislators about the profession, making regular trips to Washington, DC and Tallahassee to testify before members of Congress and the Florida Legislature on key longterm care issues. She also has hosted numerous facility tours, press conferences, petition signings and other events that promote the important link between adequate funding and high-quality care. She is a member of the American College of Health Care Administrators and the American Society on Aging and is actively involved in the American Health Care Association, serving as chair of the Independent Owners Committee and past chair of the Political Involvement Committee. Kelley Rice-Schildcurrently resides in Coral Gables and is married with three children. “Kelley is a champion for residents and families all across the state of Florida, as well as the United States,” said State Sen. Automotive Editor The Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet claimed the overall Best Convertible automobile title on June 6 at the third annual “Topless in Miami” event hosted by the Southern Automotive Media Association (SAMA), headquartered at the elegant RitzCarleton Hotel in Key Biscayne. The Porsche Carrera was contested closely in the category by the beautiful Jaguar XKR. However, the Jaguar XKR went on to win the title of Best Exotic Convertible in the voting by 72 SAMA members who drove and graded the 17 participating vehicles on design, ease of convertible operation, and overall driving and handling characteristics. “We’re really pleased with how the manufacturers supported this event and how our members have responded,” said Paul Borden, SAMA board member and event coordinator. “This was our third year and it really was the best yet, with 14 auto manufacturers entering 17 convertibles in the event. And we had a great turnout by our members; more than 70 of them signed in and drove and graded the cars.” It was the second year in a row that the sleek Jaguar XKR has won a trophy in the “Topless in Miami” competition. The Porsche Carrera and Mercedes Benz SLS AMG GT Roadster were the two other entrants in the Exotic Convertible category. At the same time, the BMW M3 Convertible won the trophy in the 2013 Best Luxury Convertible class. It was challenged closely by the Audi A5, the Infiniti G37 IPL and the Mercedes Benz E-Class convertibles. In the Full-Size Convertible Class, the Chrysler 200 Limited won top honors. LET’S TALK CARS BMW has added a long-awaited hybrid model to the popular BMW3 Series sport sedan lineup. The design of the new model — ActiveHybrid 3 — is typical BMW, with the hint of a wedge shape underlining the sporty character. The silhouette even reflects the sedan’s balance and the even distribution of weight between the front and rear wheels, while the extra flaring around the rear wheel arches denotes the rear wheel drive. But it’s the hybrid technology that makes this car stand out. The ActiveHybrid 3 blends BMW’s responsive TwinPower Turbo 3.0liter inline 6-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with an electric motor powered by a high-voltage battery. Together the inline 6 and electric motor combine for 335 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain sends combined power to the rear wheels.
The ActiveHybrid 3 is the second hybrid BMW model — after the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 — to use an inline 6-cylinder engine. The engine has won the international “Engine of the Year” award two years in a row. The six-cylinder powerplant’s TwinPower Turbo technology uses a twinscroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection and variable valve timing. It all serves to improve response and rev ability, as well as refinement and efficiency, while an aluminum crankcase helps reduce weight. The ActiveHybrid 3’s electric motor is impressive. It develops a maximum 55 hp and supports all-electric operation around town. It also helps deliver instant acceleration without any lag time and, like all electric motors, develops full torque from a standing start. The motor can drive the sedan emissions free for speeds up to 45 mph for 2.5 miles. The motor is compactly located in the automatic transmission housing and connected to the transmission by a clutch, its operating temperature controlled by the engine cooling system. The motor is powered by a 96-cell lithium-ion high-voltage battery housed under the trunk between the wheels. The battery, developed specifically for the ActiveHybrid 3, is encased in a special high-strength

Subjects must be in good health, between 45 and 65 years old, have hot flashes every day, and not currently be taking any hormonal treatments.
