Holiday Cheer
W
BY BARI AUERBACH
ith the holiday season upon us, it’s time to deal with long lines at check-out counters; extra traffic; visits from not-so-favorite relatives and of course, the obligatory fruit cake that just might sit in your kitchen until next year. But despite the hectic nature of the winter months in South Florida, - in Sunny Isles Beach, “’tis the season” for cheering gifts of services and amenities that make the holidays even more enjoyable for residents and visitors alike. ‘CHEER FOR A SAFE CITY’ Encouraging the community to step-up crime prevention measures, the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department led by Chief Fred Maas advises, “You should never feel hesitant about picking up the phone to call the police about a suspicious incident, person or something you feel uncomfortable about. We are far more willing to ‘check it out’ even if it turns out to be nothing – then to

Time for unity during the Holiday Season Dear Residents:
Well another election cycle is over and life can now return to normal as it relates to politics. It is well known that the general public does not like the negative aspects of political campaigning. The time has come for us to work together especially during the Holiday Season. While the Presidential election was the main topic during this political season, the City’s election was the main topic for a number of residents. The race between Incumbent Commissioner for Seat 3 George “Bud” Scholl and candidate Harvey Busch was the only contested race because candidate Jennifer Levin was automatically elect-
ed to Seat 3, due to the fact that she did not have an opponent. Seat 3 was formerly held by Vice Mayor Lewis Thaler, who could not run again for Seat 3 due to term limits. In the race between Commissioner Scholl and candidate Busch, Commissioner Scholl was able to retain his seat by winning the race. I congratulate Commissioner Scholl for his reelection and I would like to thank candidate Busch for his contribution to the democratic process in making the election a competitive election. More than 4000 residents voted in the election. The turnout for the City’s election was approximately 50% according to Miami-Dade County Elections Department. The elections are over. We must now unite to make this country and our City a better place to live no matter our political differences. We need to continue to focus on continuing to improve our lovely City. I welcome back Commissioner Scholl to the City Commission. I also welcome our new
Commissioner Jennifer Levin, who is an experienced attorney in the area of real estate. She will be an asset to the Commission. Lastly, I would like to publicly thank Vice Mayor Lewis Thaler for serving on the Commission for 9 years since 2003 and being the Vice Mayor for the City for many of those years. Vice Mayor Thaler’s dedication to the growth and development of our City has been outstanding and his presence on the Commission will be greatly missed. Knowing Vice Mayor Thaler, I know that he will continue to be actively involved in helping our City Commission continue to make Sunny Isles Beach the best community to live in South Florida and recognized worldwide as Florida’s Riviera. If I do not get a chance to see you during the Holidays, I want to personally wish you the best and Happy Holidays.

A supplement to Senior Safety, as seen in the SIBislander Newsletter, additional safety measures which seniors can employ are the following: Do not fall for the distraction trick while shopping. People working in teams at a grocery store or department store, for example, will have one person distract your attention or get you away from your shopping cart, while the other person steals your purse or belongings. By the time you realize it, your property is gone and so are the suspects. They
are EXPERTS at what they do. So be on guard at all times, be smarter and craftier than them. If someone attempts to distract you make sure you have your property on you and do not leave it unattended in another place. If by chance, you do fall victim to such an incident, notify management immediately. Often times they have closed circuit cameras and surveillance which can help identify the suspects. Remember, personal safety is a constant thing. Everyday there is a new attempt to find a way to your property and valuables. Stay one step ahead of them!!We care about your safety. BE ALERT! BE SAFE!

A One-Day-Vacation: Key West
Former SIB Commissioner
BY ROSLYN BREZIN
It was early on November 14th that our Sunny Isles Beach Social Seniors met at the Government Center and boarded our luxury bus to Key West. Everyone was comfortably seated and looked forward to the interesting exciting day ahead. The perfect weather would enable us to do all the things we planned. Time goes by so quickly when you are sharing happy thoughts with others. In a short time we were at the Cracker Barrel
restaurant for breakfast. Dennis Stubbolo, our chairman, called ahead (about 10 minutes before we arrived). Everything was ready for us. The food was excellent, as was the service at a private section reserved for us. At the Key West Truman White House we were welcomed by Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Norman S. Edelcup. The guides were the best! Though we knew about Truman before, we learned about his personal tastes (furniture, etc.) and pleasures like his poker games. We left with an even better understanding of this won-
derful President. Everything was just a short distance from where we were. The hours of “free time” were spent in different ways. Some went to Hemingway’s home or on a local city tour. Our visitors were on Duval Street having a snack at a local restaurant or purchasing tee shirts, sandals or souvenirs. Others were at the waterfront relaxing. We were able to share the details of what we did that day when we stopped at the Golden Corral for an excellent dinner on the way home. COMMENTS: “[I] really had a vacation, though it was only one day.” “We did so much in such a relaxing happy way that I returned relaxed, not exhausted.” THANKS: To our Chairman Dennis Stubbolo for all the hard work he did resulting in this great trip. To our Mayor Norman S. Edelcup for his support. To all of you who phoned me to tell me what a good time you had. Welcome to our next free Social Seniors meeting and musical program on Thursday, December 20 at 1:00 pm and learn about our exciting plans for the future. Call me Former Commissioner Roslyn Brezin 305-949-1522 or Chairman Dennis Stubbolo 305-9360986. It’s been a busy, busy few weeks as students and teachers settled into their new classes and the challenge of meeting all our students’ needs is addressed. NSE SIB K-8 is fortunate to have a dedicated faculty, involved parents and supportive community who work together to make very special things happen for our students.
Election Results: As part of a district-wide initiative all of our students – from Kindergarten through eighth grade – had an opportunity to vote online for the President of the United States and for the Senator. In addition our middle school students elected their new Student Government Association officers who will be installed later this month. NSE SIB K-8 is proud to announce that it has launched a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society and our middle school students are working very hard to secure a spot on the membership roster. They are studying to ensure good grades, volunteering to ensure service points and demonstrating leadership by joining school clubs. The induction ceremony for new members will be held in the spring.

have an opportunity to hear first-hand what inspired the authors to write the book. Our Kindergarten students participated in a Halloween Parade of Characters which highlighted their interest in learning to read. Students came dressed as their favorite storybook characters and paraded around the school. Health and Safety – Many parents attended a drug abuse prevention workshop arranged by Officer Gonzalez. It was most informative and sparked requests for additional workshops. Another one is planned for January 15th. Parents and students walked to school on International Walk Your Child to School Day to teach children how to walk to school safely. Select a safe route, look both ways twice before crossing and do not make any stops along the way. Science – The science teachers conducted Science Fair Workshops for Middle School parents and Elementary School parents so the parents would be able to support their children’s efforts. These were followed by weekly Science Fair Camps for the students. NSE SIB K-8 is very fortunate to have the financial support of the Sunny Isles Trust Fund. This organization raises money for both NSE SIB K-8 and ATM. Last year the Fund purchased 45 Ipads for the school and this year the Fund purchased an innovative reading comprehension program for our after
IN THE COMMUNITY
school tutorial program. The students and teachers are making good use of both the Ipads and the reading program and we know that both of these purchases will improve academic growth. Over 50 parents, students and teachers joined other community members for the Breast Walk for Cancer. It is our way of giving back to a community that is so supportive of the school. There is one constant in all of the activities mentioned above and that is our PTSA. Besides meetings and special events like Moms and Muffins, the PTSA is a part of everything that happens at the school. On Election Day, they manned the computers, during the spelling bees they presented each participant with a trinket, during Walk Your Child to School Day, they distributed literature and stickers and the list goes on and on. As you can see, it has been a busy and productive first quarter! We now look forward to an equally exciting second quarter.

• • Cat Program Update • • BY LINDSAY DONZANTI Community Cat Program Volunteer
Animal lovers and concerned residents unite, the community cats of Sunny Isles Beach need your assistance. We have all seen these cats around the City and know that over the years they have multiplied and multiplied and what can be done? The alarming fact is, and as extremely hard as this is to believe, but nevertheless true, a mating pair within just four years has the potential of being responsible for over 400,000 cats!!! Sunny Isles Beach of course is not alone, all the way along the coast, cities are experiencing over population due initially to cats being brought in to Miami Beach to control the rat population as far back as 1912. Also, since they are such prolific breeders, especially in our beautiful climate, they have litter after litter, sometimes up to eight kittens every four months, and it is not uncommon for a mother cat to have to push away the last litter, so that the new litter can nurse from her. Meanwhile the next month will see the four month old kittens mating and giving birth, along with the mother cat again. This is why we need your assistance to break the cycle and help control the overpopulation explosion. The community cats are being fed in many areas, both designated and not, by well meaning people and this is great, but
TAORMINA, from page 1
much more important is the sterilization and vaccination of these cats, so that they can live out their lives, living outdoors content and healthy, but without reproducing. These cats were born outside and unless socialized by humans in the first 16 weeks of their lives, generally don’t adapt too well to indoor life, and are therefore not great candidates for adoption. Of course the exceptions are the poor abandoned animals whose heartless owners moved away and left them. They will be more than happy to come back inside and will make “purrfect” pets, once they have readjusted to their loving new home environment. There are many beautiful, domesticated cats that are obviously the products of cruel abandonment, and again Sunny Isles Beach is not alone here, it is a very sad fact in most communities throughout the country. For many years Sunny Isles Beach has blazed the trail of Trapping, Neutering and Returning (TNR) since it is THE only proven method of controlling the cat population, by holding Spayathons, where large numbers of cats were trapped by volunteers and sterilized in one day by mobile units brought into the city for this purpose, and also by providing certificates to enable the
community cats to be sterilized by local vets. However, this takes time and effort and we are looking for dedicated volunteers that we can train to do some, or all of this invaluable task. There are literally hundreds of cats out there and only three residents that actively trap cats, the rest are volunteers that come

cities in mind, a delegation from the City of Sunny Isles Beach traveled this summer to the Town of Taormina, on the beautiful Island of Sicily. Delegates remarked on the similarities between the two locations, including world class shopping, seaside hotels, an attractive beach and the fact that both areas are destinations for tourists from
around the world. The visitors found the people very welcoming and gracious. The Taormina Commission hosted a grand ceremony and Mayor Norman S. Edelcup signed the Italian version of the Twinning Agreement. In November, the delegation from Taormina, Italy visited Sunny Isles Beach and Mayor Mauro Passalacqua signed the English version of the Twinning Agreement. The event was as ceremonious and joyful as the signing in Taormina. To welcome the Italian visitors, two young musical prodigies from the Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8, Biana Pinchuk and Brandon Goldberg, played for the guests. Their performances included a presentation of the Italian National Anthem. The two municipalities are now officially joined as International Sister Cities, with the goal to promote commerce, tourism and culture across the ocean. Plans are in process to extend special privileges to visitors traveling between both cities. A cultural exchange is being designed to introduce students from both cities to each other via Skype. With an eye on the future, the older generation hopes to promote understanding between the two cultures and to continue the relationship into the next generation. into the City to help out, but every one of those volunteers is so busy that we are now asking residents to step up to the plate, after all it is your City. A new year is just around the corner, why not make it your New Year’s Resolution to be part of the solution. We will be looking for residents that can perform one or more tasks involved in this ambitious campaign to stop this overpopulation situation: • Keeping feeding stations clean and tidy • Learning how to trap • Transporting to vet and/or collecting from vet • Caring for sterilized cat over night (it will be in a trap or carrier) and a little longer for an aborted cat • Or perhaps you have time on your hands, but don’t want the permanent commitment of a full time pet, but would like to socialize kittens for a few weeks in your home so that they are friendly and more easily adoptable • Asking friends, family, work colleagues etc., if they would like to be a proud, loving owner of a SIB cat There are so many ways to be a part of this great program, so please contact us and we’ll all meet early in the New Year to discuss what valuable role YOU are going to play.

Flagship sedan Lincoln MKS is restyled for 2013 Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Lincoln MKS is the flagship sedan for the American luxury car maker and it has been updated for 2013 with sleeker styling and a new interior. On the outside there is a new grille, hood, front fenders and fascia, new HID headlights, 19- and 20-inch aluminum wheels, decklid, LED taillights and exhaust tips. Inside, the MKS has newly crafted interior highlighted by an all-new instrument panel, MyLincoln Touch and rich new color schemes that complement new luxury materials and stitching. The MKS also comes with Lincoln Drive Control, an automatic system that delivers a smooth ride and sure handling as it intuitively responds to a driver’s commands and the road itself. At the same time, Lincoln Drive Control lets drivers change the driving characteristics of the car with a touch of the gear selector.
Shifting from Drive to Sport automatically moves handling performance, ride firmness, throttle response, shift feel, steering response and traction control/electronic stability control parameters. The MKS also has Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) as standard equipment. CCD monitors suspension settings up to 500 times per second and adjusts the suspension 20 times per second to deliver more controlled handling and a smoother ride. Under the hood, the MKS has a 304 hp (30 more horses than last year) 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine that provides V-8 performance with the fuel economy of a V-6 (18/27 mpg). The EcoBoost V-6 has twin independent variable camshaft timing (TiVCT) that optimizes the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves to increase engine responsiveness and efficiency. Optional is the more powerful 3.5-liter gasoline turbo direct-injected (GTDI) engine that produces 365 hp at 5,700 rpm (17/25 mpg). Two versions of the six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission are available, both with steering wheel paddle shifters. The 3.7liter Ti-VCT V6 uses the 6F-50, while the 3.5-liter EcoBoost gets the heavy-duty 6F55, which has high-energy friction materials, a larger ring gear and a specific torque con-

verter to handle the high torque output of the engine. Both gearboxes offer the choice of fully automatic operation or manual control. All-wheel drive is standard with the twin-turbo 3.5-liter engine and optional on the 3.7-liter V6. In good weather, over smooth roads at modest speeds and when AWD is not needed, the system intelligently routes power only to the front wheels for improved fuel efficiency. When driver input or road conditions indicate that a slip might occur, the system sends power to the
rear wheels to help prevent tire slip — for example on rain-soaked or snow-covered roads. Larger brake components increase braking power and fade resistance. Base pricing on the 2013 Lincoln MKS ranges from $42,810 to $49,800.

Thoughts about CH R IS T M AS — December 25 BY RICHARD C. SCHULMAN
City Historian
One of the things that make a Christmas party so delightful is that it is everybody’s party. Most other parties are in honor of some friend, relative, or colleague. We celebrate and salute the guest of honor’s great new achievement or anniversary. We come together to congratulate a particular individual for a notable accomplishment. But Christmas is something else. Christmas, of course, is a birthday party, but it is an idea, a symbol and above all a spirit of fellowships. At the same time, a Christmas party has another unique attribute we cannot ignore. Christmas is a gift-
giving occasion and gift-giving and gift-receiving are times when most of us have more reason than elsewhere in the year to feel happy, to feel friendly toward our companions, perhaps even to be wallowing in the milk of human kindness. A great many of the things we accept, as ancient Christmas customs are a lot younger than we think. It was little more than a hundred years ago that Americans began sending each other Christmas cards. The night before Christmas was a fine time for the kids long before Clement Moore wrote a poem about it in 1822. The Christmas tree, however, is a good deal older, and so is the Christmas party. George Washington won a great victory over the British in the American
HOLIDAY CHEER, from page 1 come out after the fact and discover a crime has been committed. “During this time of year, have a heightened sense of awareness - you can be followed after leaving a store when people can see you putting packages into your car…We’re also stepping up our police patrols around banks and ATM machines. One of the biggest safeguards is to be sure not to leave valuables inside vehicles. The average thief looks to prey upon your attempt to conceal gifts. Our goal is to make the opportunity for a crime as difficult as possible for the criminal.” Here are ways to “victim-proof” yourself: • Never leave valuables inside an unattended vehicle or out in the open • Whenever possible, shop with another person or a group. • Be aware of you surroundings, report suspicious activity. • Do not carry large amounts of currency. Physical currency gets the attention of criminals when it is exposed, and it is very difficult to replace if stolen. • Use safer means to purchase items debit cards are a good choice. Even if stolen, the probability of a criminal being able to use them before you cancel them is slim. If they are used fraudulently, the charges are insured. • Utilize safe online payment methods if making online purchases. • Make sure you’re not being followed. People watch certain “high end” stores for items such as TV’s, stereos and computers to be brought to the car in

boxes. Then when you make your next stop and leave the items inside, you can return to find a smashed window and your recent purchases gone! ‘CHEER FOR PROACTIVE INITIATIVES’ “Getting better all the time!” could be the slogan for Sunny Isles Beach thanks to ongoing beautification projects and capital improvements enhancing the city’s infrastructure and aesthetic appeal. Changing demographics have also served as a catalyst for progressive efforts spearheaded by the City Commission to build more parks including the new Heritage Park plus even more parks coming soon to the south end of the city. Taking learning to higher levels, when students start the 2013/2014 school year, the Norman S. Edelcup/Sunny Isles Beach K-8 School will be expanding the existing school building to accommodate 12 new classrooms and roof deck. The Sunny Isles Beach City Commission approved the expansion project to alleviate student overcrowding and allow for the reopening of art and music rooms. “New developments” in Sunny Isles Beach include projects on Sunny Isles Boulevard recently approved by the City Commission including: Two residential towers at 400 Sunny Isles Boulevard with 230 condo units and an enclosed commercial marina building; the Sunny Isles Beach Jewish Community Center at 488 Sunny Isles Boulevard – a five-story, multi-use building including a main worship area, a Montessori pre-school, social hall and private restaurant; and St. Tropez Phase II and
Revolution when he surprised Hessian troops who were sleeping off their Christmas revelry. I think it is only fitting to remember that Saint Nicholas, who is more celebrated at this time of year as Santa Claus, is not only the patron saint of children and of sailors but also of pawnbrokers, suggesting that it is all right to go into hock at Christmas time, but prudence argues as strongly against that course as against overestimating one’s capacity for spiked eggnog. Think before you drink and take stock before you hock. MAY I WISH YOU ALL, HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR, FULL O F HEALTH, JOY, AND HAPPINESS.
III comprised of two new residential towers and an office building. Yet another new residential condo tower approved by the Commission is slated to rise at 17141 Collins Avenue. ‘CHEER FOR GREAT LEADERS’ Before the New Year, the community will also be seeing a new face on the Sunny Isles Beach City Commission. Following the Nov. 6 general election, new Commissioner Jennifer Levin was sworn in at the Nov. 15 City Commission. Levin, elected unopposed, is filling the northern area Seat 1 of former Vice Mayor Lewis Thaler who was term-limited out. At the Nov. 15 City Commission meeting, Commissioner Isaac Aelion was appointed to serve as Vice Mayor. Familiar faces back on the Commission dais include Commissioner George “Bud” Scholl, who defeated opponent Harvey Busch. Scholl, officially sworn-in at the Nov. 15 City Commission meeting, will be embarking on his second four-year term representing the city’s southern area Seat 3. City Manager Christopher Russo has also returned to his post (as of Oct. 15). Russo formerly served as City Manager from 2000-2005. Another general election will be held in November 2014, when the following City Commission seats will be up for election: Mayor (incumbent Norman Edelcup will be termed out); residential area commissioner seat 2, central area currently held by Jeanette Gatto; and residential area commissioner seat 4, currently held by Isaac Aelion. ‘CHEER FOR INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE’ Early snow falls, along with exceptional values on air fare and room rates nationwide have helped set the scene for a “sunny
holiday season” in the city of Sunny Isles Beach. Just before Thanksgiving, millions of travelers packed their bags while resorts and businesses along Collins Avenue spruced up to welcome holiday guests. To let the whole world know about the city’s remarkable renaissance, the Sunny Isles Beach Tourism and Marketing Council is always on a mission to build markets for the “here and now” as well as the future. Beyond the vacation values at Sunny Isles Beach resorts, the Council promotes the great intrinsic value associated with enjoying a vacation in Florida’s Riviera…From multi-million dollar developments - to sweeping beautification and capital improvement programs initiated by the City Commission - plus heightened security ensured by the Police Department, Sunny Isles Beach is now being heralded as “one of the most desirable and safe South Florida destinations.” ‘Cheer for a happy New Year’ Aside from taking time off for Christmas and New Year’s Day, city officials and city staff continue to work tirelessly to ensure “everyday’s a holiday” for residents and visitors enjoying the highest quality of life in Sunny Isles Beach. Promising to be another prosperous New Year, recent City Commission meeting agendas have already been featuring requests for property site plan approvals designed to help bring even more luxurious new developments to Sunny Isles Beach. Jewish Community Services of South Florida (JCS) launched the Surf Bal Bay Club at the Surfside Community Center on November 27th. This new membership-based program for adults aged 60 and over living in the Surfside, Bal Harbour and Bay Harbor area offers concierge-level services; social and cultural activities; discounts on dining, shopping and home help; transportation; healthcare-related programs; and an in-home personal emergency response system. Over 25 seniors from the community attended and enjoyed a program that included remarks from Sylvia Goldsmith, JCS Executive Vice President and COO, and a fitness warm-up from JCS Activity Coordinator Liora Ramati-Giron. Marli Lutz, Program Director of the Surf Bal Bay Club, was gratified by the response from the community, saying “This is such a good program and a great value for these seniors. The employees of the City of Miami Beach Fire Rescue Department are fighting more than just flames these days. By growing out their mustaches, they were able to raise more than $2,000 for Mount Sinai Medical Center. The fundraising campaign was for Movember - an initiative where men grew out their mustaches during the month of November to help raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, such as prostate and testicular cancer. “It is absolutely spectacular to think that the people we work with every day dealing with emergencies are now working with us on the prevention of illnesses such as cancer,” said Mount Sinai President and CEO, Steve Sonenreich. To make the check presentation, approximately 30 City of Miami Beach Fire Rescue employees arrived to Mount Sinai on fire trucks, sporting full mustaches and light blue T-shirts, the color for prostate cancer awareness. “If we can help someone wake up health-
ier and happier by just growing out our mustaches for a month, then so be it,” said firefighter Anthony Wilson, who helped spearhead the fundraising initiative within his department. The men ended the month with one final fundraising initiative at Finnegan’s on Ocean Drive where they accepted donations to shave off their mustaches. City of Miami Beach Fire Chief, Javier Otero and Assistant Chief, Jorge Sanabria, took it one step further and agreed to shave their entire heads for the cause. All proceeds from this event were also donated to Mount Sinai. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death in men. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be over 241,000 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States this year alone. To learn more about what you can do to reduce your risk of prostate cancer, visit www.msmc.com or call 305-674-CARE (2273).

It’s that time of the year again, look out for Manatees! Communications Coordinator
BY ALAYNE YEASH
The winter season is under way and manatees are moving into the more shallow waters to escape the cold Atlantic Ocean. This means boaters in and around Sunny Isles Beach must be extra cautious and observe the posted manatee speed limit signs. The manatees are slow-moving vegetarians who feed upon plant life located in the waters and inlets all along the shores of the Intracoastal Waterway and Biscayne Bay. These gentle giants are mammals that must come to the surface regularly for air. They tend to gather in family pods and sunbathe and socialize with their young and with other manatees, floating with only their backs out of the water. It is this tendency to float at or just below the surface which puts the animals in danger from boaters. The color of their grey bodies blends into the water surface and makes the manatees difficult to see. A boat with a deep hull traveling at high speed, could impact a manatee with a fatal blow crushing their breastbone and collapsing their lungs. If somehow the manatee manages to escape the impact, they may still be
severely cut by the propeller blades. While there are organizations that rescue and rehabilitate injured manatees, the best approach is prevention. The best way to prevent injury to manatees is to watch for manatees and observe the speed limits when boating. Signs that say “Slow Speed Manatee Area” are posted at spots around the Intracoastal where manatees are known to congregate. Some areas tend to attract the manatees

year round, like those around Sunny Isles Beach, where most of Dumfoundling Bay is enforced with a slow speed all year. The middle of the channel between markers 53 to 49 is only posted with warnings to boaters to travel slowly from November 15th to April 30th each year. Slow means completely off plane, proceeding without a wake. Please observe posted signs. Boaters should educate themselves and know the
locations of the different zones. Practicing safe boating all year will keep both people and manatees safe from harm.
