New and Improved Soccer Field at Senator Gwen Margolis Park

T

Assistant Director, Cultural and Community Services

BY SYLVIA FLORES

he City leaders of Sunny Isles Beach have always believed that community parks are the foundation for a socially healthy city and are the basis to building a world class city. With that in mind, the City approved a plan to replace

the soccer field at Senator Gwen Margolis Park with artificial turf. The benefits of artificial turf include lower maintenance costs, increased playability and fewer injuries (due to the field’s even playing surface and durability), and environmental benefits (i.e. they are pesticide-free and save on water). The project is finally complete and the field has reopened for use by the general public. Hours of operation are 9:30am –

8:00pm daily. The new field has four soccer fields marked (where three can be used simultaneously), to provide for maximum usability with city programs. The City runs various programs at this park, including Soccer Camps during the summer, Recreational and Competitive Soccer during the school year, and Adult Soccer –––––––––––––––––––––––––– See

Turning left from Lehman will be safer BY COMMISSIONER JENNIFER LEVIN

If you regularly turn left onto Collins Avenue from William Lehman Causeway then you surely will know what I am talking about. I have always been somewhat uncomfortable making this turn because of the lack of lines on the asphalt defining the two left-turn lanes leaving everyone to their own devices. In fact, I raised the issue when I was serving on the City Advisory Committee. Quite often, folks

in the right-hand left turn lane drift over into the left. Many times I have been forced into the yellow cross-hatched portion of the left lane next to the median to avoid being hit from the right. Aside from the yellow area being a “no-fly zone”, pedestrians often stand there while waiting to cross the street. If the right-hand lane of Collins Avenue is blocked for some reason that further tends to push those in the right-hand left turn lane to the left. As you probably know, the Florida Department of Transportation is currently repaving A1A from 192nd Street up to

County Line Road at the north end of Golden Beach. The Sunny Isles Beach Commission has been receiving regular status reports from FDOT. Given the open lines of communication with FDOT, I took the opportunity to advise them of the foregoing issues. I am happy to report that after investigation, FDOT agreed with me. Its maintenance department will install “lane extension skip lines” to guide the eastbound left turn vehicles through the intersection sometime near

the beginning of September or October 2013 depending upon its workload. Beginning in 2015, FDOT is scheduled to repave the remainder of Sunny Isles Beach on Collins Avenue from Bayview Drive to 192nd Street. Part of that project is the proposed improvement and reconfiguration of the pedestrian crosswalks located in the Lehman Causeway area

mentioned above as well as at the westbound entrance to Lehman Causeway located on northbound Collins Avenue. A new crosswalk is also proposed for Collins Avenue just north of Government Center. It goes without saying that all of these enhancements will make our beautiful Sunny Isles Beach safer for our most precious resource.

The A, B, C’s on Hemorrhoids: Aggravating, Bothersome but Curable!

S

pain as well. While everyone has hemorrhoids, we typically do not start referring to them as such until they start causing problems.

What causes Hemorrhoids? Pregnancy, lack of dietary fiber, heavy lifting and constipation are common hemorrhoid triggers. We are all at risk. Hemorrhoids don’t discriminate – we can all get them!

What Are The Symptoms? Symptoms depend on the location and severity of the hemorrhoidal changes. Internal hemorrhoids typically cause issues which include swelling, prolapse, itching and bleeding, but they typically do not cause pain. External hemorrhoids, which are covered by very sensitive skin, can be painful, as can conditions including anal fissures (a tear in the anal lining). Bleeding, whether found on the toilet tissue or found in the toilet bowl, is what most often brings patients to their doctors for evaluation and treatment.

o you have hemorrhoids. You’re not alone. Most adults in this country eventually develop hemorrhoids - half of us have them by age 50 and three quarters of us will have issues at some point during our lifetime! It is now estimated that over 25 million Americans are affected. All races, both sexes, and all ages are susceptible.

What Are Hemorrhoids? They are simply cushions of tissue containing blood vessels that occur in the last couple of inches of the rectum. In affected patients, these cushions become loose, and the vessels enlarge, causing problems which include swelling and bleeding. Other problems which may occur include itching, prolapse, and even leakage of stool, and they are often associated with conditions causing

Do you need to treat hemorrhoids? Diagnosis is an important first step in treatment. Often, patients present with bleeding, which can also be found in more serious conditions of the colon and rectum. For this reason, many patients need other diagnostic

tests, such as a colonoscopy, in order to make certain that the bleeding is simply coming from their hemorrhoids as opposed to one of these other conditions. When other conditions have been ruled out, hemorrhoid treatment may begin. If left untreated, hemorrhoids can come and go but reoccurrence is likely to continue until the underlying problem is treated. What is the most effective treatment? There are several methods of hemorrhoid treatment available today. These methods range from surgery, which is very painful, to infrared coagulation to ultroid, both have higher complication rates and longer recuperation time. The non-surgical CRH O’Regan System, utilizing a technique known as band ligation, offers a painless, effective, and safe alternative to these surgical options. How does it work? By using a disposable plastic device, the doctor uses soft suction to draw hemorrhoid tissue into the ligator and then slips a tiny

rubber band around the tissue. With its blood supply cut off, the hemorrhoid slowly shrivels up and falls off. Most patients will require three treatments and will often start seeing their symptoms disappear right away. Where can you get rubber banding? Dr. Leon Egozi in Miami Beach, Aventura and Sunny Isles offers the gold-standard in hemorrhoid care, the CRH O’Regan System. It is a single-use, non-surgical device that treats all grades of hemorrhoids easily and painlessly by rubber band ligation. This simple procedure is performed in the office and is effective in treating 99.1% of patients with symptomatic hemorrhoid disease. No prep or sedation is needed, and patients typically return to work the same day. Should I be worried? No!Hemorrhoids are annoying, uncomfortable, and often embarrassing, but never serious. Book an appointment for your hemorrhoids and get treated today. Call Dr. Leon Egozi’s office at 305-504-2112 and start feeling better today!

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No wait, it’s Superman! But really…It is Superman (Henry Cavill)…and Russell Crowe and Amy Adams! Just to name a few of the incredible actors, actresses, and directors who grace the stage of the Teatro Greco this week for the 59th Annual Taormina Film Festival!

As if the phenomenal panorama and history oozing out of the ruins isn’t reason enough to go to the Teatro Greco, Saturday evening I was blessed with the opportunity to revisit the site and attend the Italian premier of the new Zack Snyder film, Man of Steel. After a lovely speech (in Italian) by the always handsome and ever so talented

All week the Teatro Greco will be showing incredible films under the moonlight. What’s more the tickets are beyond affordable, making the films accessible to everyone from students to stars. After 59 years of honoring the art that is film and cinema, the Taormina Film Festival still maintains it’s prestigious reputation, and is absolutely an extraordinary event that should not be missed!

Russell Crowe, newly elected mayor of Taormina, Eligio Giardina, presented the star with the Taormina Arte award. With true Sicilian enthusiasm, the stars were welcomed with booming cheers and applause. Even throughout the film the crowd couldn’t contain their excitement and following each battle the theater exploded with cheers rooting for Superman!

State-of-the-Art Hair Transplant Procedure Now in Aventura “Neograft at NeoGenesis Hair Institute is absolutely the easiest and most effective hair replacement procedure available; I’m ecstatic with my results and will recommend this to everyone who needs hair replacement.” NeoGenesis Hair Institute in Aventura is now offering a three tiered system for hair replacement therapy which includes the NeoGraft hair replacement system as well as photo-regeneration and nutrient supplementation for maximum results. NeoGraft is a relatively new automated device which facilitates the extraction of hair follicles and assists in implanting them in the desired area. It is a minimally invasive procedure where individual hair follicular units are extracted from the back of the scalp via the NeoGraft machine. The grafts are then placed into the recipient site with very little manipulation to those grafts. Unlike the traditional strip method, which requires a block of hair bearing scalp to be cut out and then sliced down into individual follicular units, our grafts are essentially perfect the way they are. This is a minimally invasive hair transplant method which requires very little downtime, minimal discomfort, and no stitches or linear scar. Scientific data support up to 95% survival of hair follicles—among the highest in the industry! The latest techniques in hairline design is incorporated by Board Certified physicians to ensure your transplant will look as natural as possible. Photo-regeneration of the scalp tissue facilitates hair growth of the newly transplanted follicles in two main ways using a red wavelength light and green wavelength light. Studies show that the red wavelength light combats oxygen deficiency—one of the main culprits of hair loss. The red light is effective for hair regrowth because it stimulates energy production of the follicle. The green light increases oxygen availability to the folli-

cles by breaking down harmful chemical byproducts that can ultimately cause loss or death of a follicle. The combined effect of these two lights has been shown to improve hair density and decreases the amount of hair shedding or loss. The final tier of the treatment involves the Viviscal Professional Hair Growth System, a scientifically formulated system of hair products and supplements. The Shampoo and Leave-in Conditioner are scientifically designed for those concerned with thinning, fragile and delicate hair. These products moisturize hair leaving it fuller and healthier by infusing the hair with essential vitamins and marine nutrients. The Viviscal Professional Supplements compliment the hair products by nourishing the thinning hair and promoting existing hair growth from within. These supplements are 100% drug free, contain Active Ingredients, and provide essential nutrients needed to nourish thinning hair, promote hair growth, increase hair density and diameter, and help the body metabolize nutrients which are building blocks of protein, an essential nutrient for growth of healthy hair. This is a dietary supplement specifically formulated with marine complex. In the hands of an artistic and knowledgeable, board certified, two-physician team Medical Directors Andrew P. Amunategui, MD and Marc G. Apple, MD of NeoGenesis Hair Institute of Aventura, using their revolutionary “triple combination” approach, provide a unique and unsurpassed state-of-the-art solution to hair loss in men and women now available locally in Aventura. SIB Police Honor Guard pay respects at the National Police Memorial

tion in this place of honor. As you walk down the curved walkways, it is difficult to ignore the personal mementos left behind from family, friends and colleagues. Most notable are the hand written notes left by children to their lost parents, who despite the passage of time, are still wondering why. Every May 13th, tens of thousands of police officers, survivors and supporters of law enforcement make the pilgrimage to judiciary square, where a candlelight vigil is held in solemn reverence for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their fellow man. It was also on this day members of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Honor Guard stood at attention on this solemn ground, as we do year after year, to represent our community in paying respects to those members of law enforcement who walked that thin blue line, never to return. The National Peace Officers Memorial Service was held on the steps of the United States Capital on May 15th 2013, and was attended by prominent members of the law enforcement community and government officials, including the President of the United States, Barrack Obama, who delivered the key note address and paid homage to the 143 law enforcement officers who were added to the memorial wall, this year alone. Sadly, unlike other memorials in Washington D.C, the Law Enforcement Memorial is always changing, as tragically more names are added each year, signifying dedication, honor and unyielding courage in the face of danger, which our police officers face daily. Let us never forget the sacrifice of those who died, but let us also never forget to extend our gratitude for those who currently walk that thin blue line in service of our communities.

BY CAPTAIN DWIGHT P. SNYDER

There is nothing more humbling for law enforcement officers than paying respects to their fallen comrades who were tragically killed in the line of duty, while protecting their communities. Throughout the month of May, which is recognized as national peace officer appreciation month, police agencies from around our country pay respect to their fallen heroes at local memorial services and prayer vigils, where the sound of tap’s echo in the distance and the volley of a 21gun salute cracks the stillness of the night, bringing tears to the eyes of those brave men and women, who daily put their lives in harm’s way by walking a thin blue line, a line which separates good from evil. In 1962, out of respect for law enforcement, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation, designating every May 15th, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week upon which it falls, as Police Week. The National Police Memorial was dedicated on October 15th, 1991, and is situated in Judiciary Square in the heart of our Nation’s Capital, just a short walk from the National Mall where other historic monuments reside, such as the Lincoln, Washington and Jefferson memorials. There, in remembrance of their sacrifice, are the names of each American law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty etched in the smooth blue-grey marble walls which line the memorial site, 19,000 in all, dating back to 1791, including our own Town Marshal Ralph G. Langworthy, whose end of watch was June 10th, 1928. At every entrance is a symbolic grouping of sculptured adult lions watching over their cubs, which is a powerful representation of law enforcement officers (LEO’s), who are considered the guardians of their communities and just as protective. The canopy from the mature shade trees which line the walkways provides a sense of peace for all those who come to pay respect, or have a quiet moment of reflec-

The Price of Freedom BY RABBI YISRAEL BARON

Since our childhood, we have always wanted to exercise our own free choice. As children, we do not want to be told what to do. We want freedom from the “tyranny” of adults telling us what to eat and when to go to sleep. “Eat healthy” and “go to sleep early” is what those “totalitarian” adults would tell us. The truth is that free choice holds the key to power: power to become something truly great or power to self-destruct. The power we can access through our free choice can be used for good or bad. The best case scenario is to use that freedom of choice to generate something truly great. However if we don’t make mindful choices, that freedom can also destroy us. It can open the floodgates of all sorts of crazy behavior and addictions. This can cause individuals who have seemingly unlimited freedom through their wealth and power to be forced to surrender that freedom. On a global scale, throughout history, there have been many movements and even revolutions, seeking freedom. Freedom means freedom to choose what you want to do. Yet, those revolutions rarely sustained themselves in the span of history. Great superpowers who came to be in order to provide freedom, are often vigilant to maintain their freedoms by fighting the outside enemy, while ignoring deterioration on the inside. Removing the original boss is easy in comparison to the self-discipline needed to sustain freedom and not recreate the boss that we struggled to overthrow. Freedom comes with a price tag. If we are not told what to do, we must be our own boss. Do we have the ability to use that freedom to soar, or will we self-destruct? It is easier to detest the boss than to be our own boss. Can we pay the price of freedom? Do we have the power to sustain the freedoms we are granted? True power is not expressed over someone else. Rather real strength is judged by the level of discipline we have over ourselves when we exercise our freedom. In his book, “Paradox of Choice,” Barry Schwartz argues that our freedom which provides abundant choices are making us less happy. He claims that they paralyze us to the point of no decision. He further claims that if and when we do choose, we are left wondering if we made the right choice. Should I be doing this now? Or maybe I should be doing something else? Why am I wasting time doing this while, I could be doing something else? Yes, we can get paralyzed by too many choices. We want to feel significant in this huge world, which can swallow us up by its sheer vastness if we are not careful. While I agree that there is a problem with abundant choice and no direction, as described by Dr. Schwartz, I disagree with his final analysis. Yes, a lack of purpose

July 15, 2013

and meaning of life combined with having abundant choices does leave many people confused. People can be tortured by their many freedoms. However, the solution is to tap into a deep sense of purpose, a higher goal, where every life decision will be measured against that purpose. Then we experience what the Talmud says “There is no happiness as the removal of doubt.” In search of purposeful, meaningful activity, we want to know that what we do will make a difference. It feels so good to be doing exactly what you know with certainty and conviction is the right thing for any given moment. The key to successful use of our freedom is utilizing the self-discipline which helps us preserve that freedom, lest we get swept away and lost in the abundant choices that freedom presents. Discipline can be achieved and maintained through strongly connecting to a defined purpose. The goal is to define your purpose, so that every deed you do is done with awareness and conviction. Of course, when that purpose is focused on something beyond our own personal comfort and pleasure, when we chose something that is for the betterment of ourselves, our families, our community, and the world at large, we can rest assured that when we personally feel weak or indecisive, we can still persevere for the greater good. Then, with every action you choose, you will know with certainty that this is exactly what you should be doing at any given moment. Only humans have the capacity, through choice, to rise above the basic instinct of self gratification to become part of a larger mission. Human beings at their finest moments cast aside “the spirit of the animal which goes downward”and choose to be part of “the spirit of man ascends above” (Ecclesiastes 3:21). This is the highest expression of being human. I am not suggesting a new movement or revolution. The truth is that freedom is granted to anyone willing to claim it. Deep within us, we may choose how to react to any experience. It’s at that primal state, deep within us that we make our own decisions. No one has any power over our inner self. In that place, we have complete freedom. No one can stop us from expressing our choice of how to look at the world around us. These decisions, if made with thoughtful consciousness, will make us more happy, balanced individuals who can influence our surroundings in a positive and lofty way.

The Supreme Court’s Gene Patenting Decision Was Personal BY REP. DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ

The United States Supreme Court recently ruled that human genes cannot be patented, and this is exciting news for cancer patients, and individuals seeking to learn more about their genetic risk for disease. The unanimous decision in Association of Molecular Pathology vs. Myriad Genetics struck down patents held by Myriad Genetics Inc. on two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, mutations of which are linked to dramatically increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. For me, this decision is personal. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was advised to be tested for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. I ended up testing positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation, but because one company had a patent on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, I was unable to get a second opinion on the test. Like thousands of women before me, and thousands since, I had the devastating experience of making life-altering decisions based on the results of one test. I believe that the Supreme Court’s decision is a victory for everyone who believes that a company cannot patent parts of our body. This decision ends this practice, giving patients new options to learn of and verify their genetic risks. As a long-time women’s health and cancer awareness advocate, I had introduced and supported legislation both in the Florida Legislature and in Congress that helped women with breast cancer – including my bill to end “drive-thru mastectomies” by requiring Florida health insurers to allow women to remain in the hospital following surgery for more than one day, in consultation with their doctors. But when I found my lump during a routine self-exam, I realized how much I didn’t yet know about breast cancer. As a young Jewish woman of Eastern European descent, I was at a dramatically higher risk of carrying a genetic mutation that could put me at an 85 percent lifetime risk of getting breast cancer and made me up to 40 times more likely to get ovarian cancer. This was one of the reasons, as well as a diagnosis at the relatively young age of 41, that I was advised to be tested for the BRCA gene mutations because people with those mutations are more likely to have recurrences of breast cancer. My cancer was early stage, but testing positive also put me at a high risk of ovarian cancer. For me, the decision I had to make was - do I have the lump removed and do limited radiation to kill off any remaining cancer cells? Or do I undergo seven surgeries to remove my breasts and ovaries, based on one test from one company, to reduce my risk of recurrence? Previously,

only Myriad Genetics, or companies with a license from Myriad Genetics, could do research and administer a test to see if gene mutations were present. Now, other companies can also perform the test, and some have already announced they will offer the test at prices significantly lower than Myriad. As a result of this experience, I introduced legislation requiring the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to conduct a study on ways to remove barriers for patients to get access to second opinions on genetic testing when a gene is patented. The legislation passed and the USPTO has recently completed their work on the study, which should be released this summer. I plan to introduce some follow-up legislation based on the Supreme Court ruling and the recommendations from the USPTO study, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to further increase access to health care and genetic information for patients across the country. Now, as gene patents begin to fall away, we must overcome the next big hurdle – sharing the momentous data these tests provide. Myriad has run over a million BRCA tests since their creation of the test in 1996, and they have a treasure trove of information on the various mutations and the BRCA population that could have profound implications on medical research and treatment for the entire cancer community. As Myriad continues to offer this important test, now with increased coverage from the Affordable Care Act, we should work together to allow researchers access to this valuable data. In the meantime, it is vital that public and private health insurers maintain and increase coverage for genetic tests for those patients at risk of a mutation – men and women with a family history of cancer, women in certain ethnic groups, and those with advanced diagnoses at a young age. I am proud to continue working with a coalition of dedicated cancer and genetic advocacy groups to move these priorities forward. As our nation’s brilliant scientists unlock the human genome, we must do all we can to unlock barriers to health care as well. We owe that much to those whose lives hang in the balance, and for the future generations to come. I am proud to be an advocate for the people of South Florida, and my office is open to you. You can reach us in Pembroke Pines at 954-437-3936, in Aventura at 305-936-5724 and in Washington, DC at 202-225-7931. The Second Madi Thaler Walkathon for Breast Cancer

Thank you, Sunny Isles Beach, for your support and participation last year. Walk or ride with us again this year. $25 includes the walk and a T-shirt and breakfast. All proceeds and donations will be for Hadassah Medical Organization to help in finding a cure for Breast Cancer. Hadassah leads the way: groundbreaking breast cancer research at Hadassah Medical Organization. In 1995 Hadassah Medical Organization proudly joined with researchers at The National Institutes of Health to publish the groundbreaking dominant genetic research on BRCA 1 [gene] mutations in specific populations. Researchers at Hadassah Medical center have developed a test that can predict if healthy women are at a significant risk of developing breast or ovarian can-

cer. Using a blood test, the researchers were able to identify the presence of a harmful mutation which triggers those types of cancers. Hadassah Medical Organization is a state of the art medical organization and engaged in major research and shares all its knowledge and accomplishments with medical communities of the world. Hadassah founded in 1912, remains 100 years old the largest women’s volunteer organization of America. Hadassah is non profit, tax deductible and charitable and a membership organization. Dade is in the business of customer service and it makes a difference when residents and businesses feel like we are accessible to them.” A Miami-Dade staff person will be available to assist residents, as well as an automated computer touch screen that will allow residents to pay their bills and access other services online. address. • If your home has structural damage, don’t enter until it has been checked by officials. • Open windows and doors to ventilate and dry your home. • Beware of snakes, insects and animals driven to higher ground by flood water. • Before drinking water, check to

Motorists and Pedestrians Both Have Responsibilities… Sunny Isles Police Department

BY CHIEF FRED MAAS

Injuring someone, or getting injured oneself is never a validation for being right. In other words, yes the LAW may be on your side but the consequences may be more devastating. Such is the case when motorists come into conflict with other motorists or pedestrians. Being right is not always the best outcome. There are Florida State Statutes on the books that regulate motorists AND pedestrians. Yes, you as a pedestrian have to abide by the traffic laws too. Generally speaking, motorists MUST yield to a pedestrian, but there are times when the pedestrians can be clearly at fault. However, we are concerned for EVERYONE’S safety so your police department is offering up some valuable tips when driving or walking in our beautiful but busy city. Motorists: When you are approaching a crosswalk, even if you have the green light, if there are pedestrians in the crosswalk, you MUST yield to them and complete your turn or your direction, after they have safely cleared your path. Example: At 174 Street and Collins Avenue there is a heavy amount of both motorists and pedestrians. When a driver is Eastbound on 174 Street and gets the green light to turn either northbound or southbound, you must YIELD to the pedestrians who are also crossing at the same time, with the pedestrian crosswalk light in their favor. We are aware of the frustrations that drivers encounter as they sit and wait in the peak of their turn, for

people to cross in front of them. And not all people walk at a fast or moderate pace so it is patience challenging for sure to wait for all to cross, then complete your turn. And IGNORE those drivers behind you who insist on laying on the horn in order to pressure you to go anyway. Trust us, if they pressure you into going too soon and failing to yield as you should, they will be LONG GONE if you get into an accident. You will be left “holding the bag” as they say. So, relax, don’t be pressured or bullied into doing what the law says you can’t do. You must Yield when necessary. Pedestrians: You also have responsibilities regardless of whether you have the Ped Xing light in your favor. It is irresponsible and dangerous for you to: Talk or text on the phone while crossing the street. Wear head phones or other noise blocking devices when you cross the street in traffic. Read a flyer, book or other material while crossing the street. Yes, we see it all the time. People are unaware of the dangers of crossing a major roadway with several lanes of traffic. Above all, you should be paying attention and watching out for drivers so that you do not fall victim to their carelessness. Two careless and inattentive people, a motorist and a pedestrian, is simply a collision course for a disaster and injury. It can be avoided. A little patience, a little concern for others, a little prudence and responsibility will go a long way to prevent the worst thing for our city and your loved ones. BE SAFE! WE CARE ABOUT YOU!

*Author’s note: We will continue to bring you information and laws regarding traffic and pedestrian safety thru articles in your Community News. Look for them!

Veterans don’t miss your chance Register now to be placed on the wall Communications Coordinator

BY ALAYNE YEASH

The Veterans Wall at Heritage Park (19200 Collins Avenue) displays the names of Sunny Isles Beach residents that have served our country in the military. Every year new names of Sunny Isles Beach residents who have served in the United States Armed Forces are added to the wall. The Veterans Day ceremony is held on November 11th at 9:30 am each year at the north end of Heritage Park. This year the date falls on a Sunday and every veteran placed on the wall in the past or those new nominees are invited to attend the celebra-

tion. A reception follows the ceremony. Applications are being accepted until September 1, 2013 for this year’s ceremony. Nominate your friends or relatives for this program. A veteran can nominate his or herself for this honor as well. This is a great way to acknowledge someone in your family for their service to our country. Applications are available online at the City’s website at www.sibfl.net or at the Government Center at 18070 Collins Avenue or Pelican Community Park, 18115 North Bay Road. Please bring proof of honorable discharge from military service and proof of residency in the City of Sunny Isles Beach. Your SIB Resident ID can be used as proof of residency or a utility bill with the veteran’s name. If you miss the deadline, the next opportunity to be placed on the wall will be Veterans Day 2014.
