n September 21st we had our 4th Annual Miami-Dade Coastal Clean-Up. This is an international event, held all over our coastlines, parks and other areas on this day. The United States Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary not only coordinated the event for Sunny Isles Beach, but also were part of the cleaning efforts. We had a great turn out with four teachers and approximately 25 students from our Sunny Isles Beach Norman S. Edelcup K-8 School. There were other volunteers from the local communities and some Coast Guard officers as well. The City of Sunny Isles Beach generally has a very clean, well maintained and groomed beach; however events like this annual coastal cleanup are always welcome and needed. On September 21, the volunteers separated in groups with trash grabbers and bags in hand, picking up all different types of debris and garbage. The cleanup was on a perfect day with amazing weather which made it great for this event. The Sunny Isles Beach Ocean Rescue (SIBOR) Division helped out by providing water, supplies and a lifeguard on standby to help with any needs.

TALENT SHOW, from page 1 es that night. Who knew that there was so much hidden talent in our World Class City! The stage was set, lights checked, and an abundance of performers were ready for their chance to take the stage. Long hours of planning, coordinating, and scheduling all paid off as the first performer took the stage. The performers ranged from just five years old to sixty and older. The variety of talent present in the show displayed just how much the event had grown from one year to the next. Expanding from dancers, singers, and pianist, this year’s show also featured an original poetry recital, flamenco dancing, modern dance, a five-piece band, original artists, and even a traditional comedic musical performance from Russia. With so much growth in one year, we cannot wait to see what the City’s 3rd Annual Talent Show will have in store for us next year. A big thank you goes out to this year’s judges: Pianist Ofelia Biancuzzo, Artist Beatriz Alcantara and Miss Teen USA from SIB, Tiffany Rivera. Professionalism and thoughtful choices of the judges keep our SIB Talent Show to a higher standard that will inspire performers to return and participate year after year. Here are some steps to take to reduce breast cancer risk BY DONNA LUNDY

By now, seeing pink throughout National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October is nearly as much of a tradition as seeing twinkling holiday lights in December. But don’t let familiarity lull you into forgetting the message behind the color: There are important steps women can take to help reduce their chances of having breast cancer or to help find it early, when it’s easiest to treat. Since 1990, more and more women have been surviving breast cancer, largely because of early detection through mammography and improvements in treatment. However, breast cancer is still the secondleading cause of cancer death in women, behind only lung cancer. Mammograms can find breast cancers earlier, when the chances of survival are better. That’s why the American Cancer Society recommends yearly mammograms and breast exams for women age 40 and older. Mammograms aren’t perfect, though. They may miss some cancers, or may detect things that aren’t cancer. That’s why it’s also important to talk to your doctor if you notice any changes in your

breasts. In addition to getting a yearly mammogram, there are other steps women can take to help stay well and reduce their breast cancer risk: • Eat a healthy diet to help control weight. Being overweight or obese may raise breast cancer risk. •Get regular physical activity. Working out regularly helps keep your weight in check, and exercise may help control inflammation and other factors associated with cancer risk. Adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week (or a combination of these), preferably spread throughout the week. • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink to no more than one drink per day. In studies, alcohol has been clearly linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. This October, do more than “think pink.” For more information about how you can take action, make noise, and help make this breast cancer’s last century, call your American Cancer Society at 1-800-2272345 anytime, day or night, or visit cancer.org/breast cancer.

Quest to create a unique Community Albeit ‘Un-ZIP’d’ BY COMMISSIONER JENNIFER LEVIN

Since the incorporation of Sunny Isles Beach in 1997, the leaders of the City have embarked on a mission to create a unique community easily identifiable by residents and visitors alike. As a newlyelected Commissioner, I continued the quest of seeking approval from the United States Postal Service for a unique ZIP Code for the City of Sunny Isles Beach. The task of obtaining a ZIP Code for the City was first initiated when I was nominated to serve on the City Advisory Committee by former Vice Mayor Lewis Thaler whose idea it was to make the request. I had no idea what I would be doing once appointed to the CAC, but I immediately was directed by the former Chair of the City Advisory Committee that my task would be to undertake this request. Even then, in January 2012, the USPS was already having financial difficulties, and they just continued to get worse over time. At the time of this writing, the Federal Government is on shutdown. I waded through the USPS Operations Manual and other materials I had and could find that would enlighten me as to what the USPS takes into consideration when considering a “request for ZIP Code boundary review” rather than simply writing a letter stating that Sunny Isles Beach wanted a new ZIP Code because it is unique and different from the other areas inside 33160. I extolled its virtues: the Beach, geographic location, tourist destination, economic status and property values (as to uniqueness), the low crime rate (for the insurance cost argument), its population and projected growth rate (to justify the cost). I always felt that it was an up-hill battle because of the financial ramifications to the floundering USPS as my research also led me to the requirements that the change had to make financial sense. I learned during the process that we also had been denied in the past on two occasions, and I had found articles on the Internet about other cities that had been turned away. But, as they, say: If you don’t ask, then certainly you don’t get, and I remained cautiously optimistic. In a nutshell, my arguments seemed to fall on deaf ears with a reply that felt scripted and was turned around too quickly given the procedure I was originally told would have to be followed when considering the

request. The denial was based on the fact that the USPS was unable to identify any operational needs, substantial savings, or service improvements that would justify their providing a unique ZIP Code for Sunny Isles Beach. At a minimum, changes to schemes and transportation schedules, directory revisions, computer software, and mail forwarding for changing addresses would be required and significant administrative costs would be incurred. It was further explained that 5-digit ZIP Codes can only be authorized if there is an operational need supporting the USPS’ mission of providing the best universal service, when an existing ZIP Code structure impedes quality service, and where there is an opportunity to substantially reduce its distribution and delivery costs. The denial also went on to explain in three paragraphs the “preferred last line” concept as though I had no idea what it is although I had stated in the request that it was inadequate. Naturally, however, above all else the USPS is a business, a separate entity not funded by our tax dollars, so all of the fiscal arguments make sense notwithstanding internal directives of the USPS which I was provided from their office in Washington, D.C., or arguments made in the request for the change. Finally, however, there was the ultimate truth in black and white: “The USPS is experiencing significant financial challenges related to declining mail volumes, the lackluster economy and fluctuating fuel costs.” Consequently, not all of the established rules apply any longer. In fact, since the time of the application, there has been talk in Congress of the installation of post office box stations, like you might see in a townhouse project, so mail carriers no longer have to stop at individual addresses and everyone within a certain area would pick up their mail at the same location. As much as the attorney in me wants to appeal the decision, timing is everything and now is simply not the time. With email, social media, financial difficulties, the speed of technological development, an ever-evolving global economy and necessary adaptations to all of the above, it may never be. Who knows? The ZIP Code may eventually become a thing of the past, maybe even the United States Postal Service itself. For the time being, however, not having our own ZIP Code does not detract from what Sunny Isles Beach has become, is, or will be in the future— Florida’s Riviera, a unique community, and then some.

SCHULMAN’S CORNER October Highlights BY RICHARD C. SCHULMAN

City Historian

ODE TO COLUMBUS DAY

Monday, October 14 Americans celebrated the Discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus. There are those who contend that the Norse Vikings, Irish missionaries or the ten lost tribes of Israel somehow discovered America before Columbus did; but the fact is that Columbus alone got back to the Old World and spread the word. Columbus Day is an Italian-American tradition. A man named William Monney founded an organization called the Society of St. Tammany that had what is generally regarded as the first American celebration of Columbus Day back in 1792. The New World or America Christopher Columbus discovered does not bear his name, but rather is named after Americo Vespuccio. Vespuccio claimed to have been the first to reach the continental mainland-in 1497 to be exact. Vespuccio got the continent, and history has certainly made it up to Christopher Columbus. And how many cities in the U.S. are named after Vespuccio? Columbus was gifted with courage and with the patience to stick to the course he laid out for himself. Thursday, October 17th this year will be 80 years since famous scientist and father of nuclear power immigrated to America. Albert Einstein was born in Germany and educated in Europe but was known around the world for his work in theoretical physics. He won the Nobel Prize in 1921 for his explanation of

ALBERT EINSTEIN

the photoelectric effect. He traveled the world to speak about his findings, even appearing as a guest lecturer at Columbia University in New York City for three weeks in April 1921. By the early 1930s it was obvious that the treatment of Jews in his native land would make it impossible for Albert to continue working in any official capacity at any German university. He was listed as an enemy of the Nazi Party and targeted for death. Einstein wisely chose to leave Germany for Belgium, then England and finally the United States. He accepted a position at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, New Jersey) and applied for US Citizenship in 1935.

October 31st is Halloween- there are probably more superstitions about Halloween than about any other day of the year. Halloween used to signal the end of the harvest and was a time used by the ancient Celtic pagans to take stock of supplies for winter. They also believed the dead could reach the living on that day. And since they thought that the head was the most powerful part of the body, they used that part of vegetables to carve a face and frighten off the scary things that they believed in. Jack O Lanterns were first carved from a turnip or rutabaga. They would place a skeleton on their window sill to represent the departed and protect their home. Halloween has changed greatly since ancient times. In today’s celebration most participate in Halloween as a fun day to party. In our imagination on that festive day witches float around on their brooms probably needing an air traffic controller. Go with the kids at night for Trick or Treat; be sure to look through their “Goodies” before they eat the candy. “Have a Safe Halloween everyone!”

The school year is off to a wonderful start with our teachers implementing a rigorous curriculum throughout the day and an expanded after school program of clubs and enrichment activities. Let me share some of this excitement with you This year, NSE Sunny Isles Beach K-8 has partnered with the Florida Justice Teaching Institute to help our Civics students better understand the justice system and how it works. The ultimate goal of the Justice Teaching program is to pair a legal professional with every elementary, middle, and high school in the state of Florida. Sunny Isles Beach Commissioner Jennifer Levin, who is also an attorney, is volunteering her time this year to the students at NSE SIB K-8 Her extensive knowledge and experience is serving as a very valuable resource for so many of our seventh graders. While Miami Dade County Public School teachers have the preparation and skills needed to “give their students the world”, having an attorney in the classroom helps make learning more enriching by bringing a deeper understanding of how our justice system works. The Justice Teaching program aims to benefit students

by promoting an understanding of Florida’s justice system and our laws, developing critical thinking abilities and problem solving skills, and demonstrating the effective interaction of our courts within the constitutional structure. This partnership will surely do just that. Another exciting event in the Civics department this year was the annual Constitution Day Essay Contest. The Middle School District winner was Nour Abdrado, a 7th grade Civic’s student in Ms. Carvajal’s Civics class. Nour’s essay on the first amendment won first place! She and her family attended the reception at which she was awarded an iPad for her heartfelt essay. Our expanded before and after school enrichment program includes a SECME Club, a Computer Club, a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society, a Builders Club and a K-Kids Club in addition to Future Educators Association and Student Government, Strings and Art Clubs. There are also Science Fair Camps for middle and elementary students and open computer labs in the morning to provide students with access to computerized programs. Through these programs, our students have every opportunity to enrich their skills and give back to the community. These clubs and their sponsoring teachers are expanding our students’ horizons and developing our future leaders.

ARTS BALLET THEATRE OF FLORIDA

Pentimento, created by choreographer Vicente Nebrada, includes excerpts from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Four Suites for Orchestra. The ballet is a bold, abstract work that is based on the art form of painting called pentimento. The artist changes his or her mind about the composition of his painting during the process of painting, and then changes it. This ballet applies the same approach to dance: the concept for the dances and costumes change throughout the performance. Using masks, flowing fabric and creative lighting to create a mystical effect, the piece develops through layers of movement, color and light. Adding to mystical effects is original costuming by Cristina Gianinni. On the same evening and back by popular demand, the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents Firebird, with Stravinsky’s brilliant score that tells the tale of a magical firebird who helps a heroic prince rescue a beautiful princess. With exuberant dancing, magical special effects, fantastic costumes designed by Jorge Gallardo, and innovating special multimedia effects by www.DigitalMediaDesigns.net this magnificent production will enthrall and enchant audiences. Shows are October 12th and 13th at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Amaturo Theater; and October 19th & 20th at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center In addition to these main productions, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will also make educational appearances in various schools in both Broward and Miami-Dade counties, as they continue to excite young children about the importance and enjoyment of the classical art of ballet in the education outreach program. October 12 & 13, 2013 Broward Center for the Performing Arts 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312 October 19 & 20, 2013 Aventura Arts and Cultural Center 3385 NE 188 Street, Aventura, FL 33180

The United Chinese Association of Florida (UCAF) presented the 11th Annual South Florida Dragon Boat Festival on October 5, 2013 at Haulover Park welcoming a large crowd again this year. The City, as one of the sponsors, entered an employee dragon boat racing team again this year. The Sunny Isles Beach team, the “Sunny Dragons”, was comprised of members of various City departments, including the Building Department, Community Development Department, Human Resources Department, Cultural & Community Services, Ocean Rescue, the City Attorney’s Office, the City Manager’s Office and the City Commission. The team has worked closely with Johnson Ng from the United Chinese Association of Florida. The “Sunny Dragons” acknowledge Mr. Ng’s invaluable time and leadership in helping our team prepare for race day. As defending champions in our division, this year’s team came in second in the mixed “B” division and placed 3rd in the corporate division, an excellent result for all amateur paddlers! Many businesses and government agencies sponsored or provided stations including live multicultural entertainment featuring a colorful Chinese Lion Dance and a

powerful Chinese martial arts demonstration. Japanese Taiko drumming, other international musical performances and a cooking demonstrations were presented as well as a kite tournament, an egg-roll contest, games, arts and crafts, plus play areas for the children and health and fitness stations for their parents. The South Florida Dragon Boat Race had more than 20 teams in participation. It is obvious from the attendance that the UCAF hosted another successful community, cultural event. The “Sunny Dragons” can hardly wait until next year!
