BY COMMISSIONER ISAAC AELION

When one hears the word Sicily, thoughts of The Godfather trilogy come to mind and the word “Mafia” swirls around one’s head. In reality, nothing can be further from the truth. Recently, the delegation from the City of Sunny Isles Beach visited the City of Taormina, a beautiful beach resort at the footsteps of Mount Aetna on the southeastern tip of Sicily. The mission was to cement the sisterhood between Sunny Isles Beach and this gem of a city, and boy did the delegation experience an unforgettable week. Aside from the quasi majestic welcoming by the City of Taormina Mayor and Counsel, the people of Taormina went out of their way to make us feel welcome and part of their family. From the constant salute by passing police

officers, to the warm gestures by ordinary people in the streets, we couldn’t help but feel that we were in the company of very wonderful Sicilian people. Whether we strolled and stopped for ice cream, sat for a drink, or entered a retail store, the warmth and kindness were always there. One interesting fact is that the Taorminians are very in tune with nature. For example, the little flower pots outside their homes are always blooming and the prickly cactus which is their natural, main flora, is left undisturbed even if it curbs the vista from a home window. So next time I hear the word Sicily, I will not think of Don Vito Corleone but of a warm people whom one feels at home with. Even if Taormina is 2747 years old and Sunny Isles Beach only 15, the two sister cities have a lot to offer to each other and I for one, believe that this union will thrive in the economic, cultural and social areas.

Summary of September SIB City Advisory Committee Meeting BY HARVEY BUSCH

Chairman

The September 18th meeting of the Sunny Isles Beach City Advisory Committee was very productive and informative. Steve Trattner, Chairman of the Traffic and Safety Committee, introduced Gene Newman, a Director of the Trump Towers Master Association. Mr. Newman requested support from the Committee to ask the Commission to permit a left turn at 158th Street and Collins Avenue. This would allow the residents of the Trump Towers to access

their entrance without traveling south to Haulover Park. Although there are possible safety concerns, Steve Trattner has been in contact with the traffic engineering firms that work with the Florida Department of Transportation to work on coming up with a solution. Bob Welsh, Chairman of the Long Range Planning and Zoning Sub-Committee, requested that the SIB City Advisory Committee support a request proposed to the City Commission to rename Heritage Park as the Lewis Thaler Family Park in honor of the outstanding work of our Vice Mayor. Motions were passed supporting requests to draft letters of support to the Florida Recreation Development Assistance

Program for a $200,000 grant which is to be applied for that will finance improvements on the field at Senator Gwen Margolis Park and a $200,000 grant application that will finance the construction of an outdoor amphitheater at Town Center Park. I recently received good news from our City Engineer. The bus shelters over the benches at the bus stops along Collins Avenue that were removed during sidewalk renovation will be replaced by the beginning of December. All residents are invited to join us at our next committee meeting on Wednesday, October 31st at 6:30 pm in the first floor meeting room at the Government Center, 18070 Collins Avenue.

• • LIFE IN THE CITY • • Costume Party BY BARI AUERBACH

Everyone is getting ready to have a spooktacular time celebrating the monster success of Sunny Isles Beach at the annual “Booogie by the Beach” celebration Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27 at Pelican Community Park – but if you haven’t decided on a costume yet, here’s some inspiration to help you get in the Halloween spirit…

Cowboys or Cowgirls…In keeping with the “how the west was won” philosophy, the city laid down the law for future development of the Town Center district spanning the west side of Collins Avenue to Sunny Isles Boulevard. Today, all the proactive planning has paid off as revitalization continues to create supernatural Transylvania-like transformations that don’t just happen during a full moon!

Little Green People…Extra terrestrial costumes would blend right in with all the new green terrain gracing parks in Sunny Isles Beach that keep rising up faster than any happy ending tales from the crypt!

Super Heroes…Party City should definitely add new super hero costumes to their collection to honor all the super hard work of members of the Sunny Isles Beach City Commission who fly into action faster than speeding bullets to pass powerfully proactive resolutions rescuing residents from high taxes while heightening quality of life!

Spiderman…Being able to easily climb up to the penthouse level of new multi-mil-

lion dollar developments rising on the east side of Collins Avenue would be a spideyskill that could really come in handy for anyone interested in owning a “mansion in the sky” or an opulent Porsche residence where elevators can whisk batmobiles directly up to the most luxurious lairs!

Honey Boo Boo…The crowning glory of this costume is a sparkling pageant tiara – but before placing it on your head, be sure to wash your hands so you don’t mess it up with barbecue sauce from the best ribs from the Sunny Isles Beach Tony Roma’s washed down with a big bottle of Go Go Juice so your sugar rush will keep you up at least until the witching hour on Halloween!

Lifeguard…Since the City Commission is ensuring Sunny Isles Beach has the highest quality lifeguards and lifeguard stands, this costume could commemorate the priority placed on public safety. But since it takes a lot of training and credentials to be a real lifeguard, the costumed characters may want to choose another important place to guard - like the bakery sections of Epicure and Publix, where everyone walking around like zombies after being on the HCG diet for too long want to devour everything in sight!

Mummies…Even King Tut would applaud the great kingdom for families that Sunny Isles Beach has now become, complete with mummies and daddies pushing strollers to park playgrounds and bringing their little angels to have a devilishly good time at special events and holiday celebrations like “Booogie by the Beach” where no matter what costume you wear, the one accessory everyone will share is a killer smile!

Voters encouraged to be ‘election ready’ by reviewing sample ballot BY CHRISTINA WHITE

With the Nov. 6 General Election just weeks away, voters are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the ballot’s content before casting their vote. The upcoming election consists of candidate races at all levels of government, 11 state constitutional amendments, one school board question, and 10 County questions. In addition, 17 municipalities have contests on the ballot. Because this ballot is a lengthy one, voters should prepare in advance by viewing their voter-specific customized sample ballot available on the Elections Department’s website. By entering minimal voter information, voters quickly can view a sample ballot containing exactly what they are eli-

gible to vote on. This gives voters the opportunity to make their decisions prior to voting, thereby expediting their voting experience. “Due to length of the ballot, I encourage registered voters to be ‘election Ready,’” said Penelope Townsley, supervisor of elections. “So, whether they vote early, by absentee or on Election Day, it will be a faster and more efficient process if they take the opportunity to review their sample ballot ahead of time. I would even suggest printing the sample ballot and having it handy while they vote.” To view a customized sample ballot visit online at <www.miamidade.gov/elections/registstatus.asp>.

Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation offers chance to play at Sun Life Stadium BY JENNIFER MARTINEZ

Have you ever dreamed of playing football in a professional stadium? Now is your chance! Teams are forming for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s Touch of Football event taking place on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013. Players will have the opportunity to show their skills on the field of Sun Life Stadium, where many professional players make their NFL debut. Teams participating in CCFA’s Touch of Football event, will consist of 7 to 15 male and female players, who will compete in a 7-on-7 flag tournament officiated by professional level referees. Games will be 25 minutes long with double elimination. Each team will be guaranteed at least two games and will participate in a rookie mini camp with passing, kicking and receiving drills in between games. “We are very excited to host this new event,” said Amy Gray, executive director for Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s Florida Chapter. “Many South Floridians are avid football fans. What better way to raise funds and create awareness

than to invite the community to play football in an NFL stadium.” Teams participating in the tournament will have a fundraising goal of $3,500. Moneys raised will support CCFA’s research efforts and support for those diagnosed with Crohn’s, colitis or other digestive diseases. Team entries also will include uniforms, tours of the stadium (including the locker room), and prizes for the first, second, and top fundraising teams. General admission tickets are available for $25 and include lunch. Following the tournament, a VIP cocktail reception will tke place in the Dolphin’s player locker rooms. For $125 guests will be treated to an incredible cocktail reception with a behindthe-scenes tour of Sun Life Stadium. For those not participating in the tournament, this ticket will include lunch and spectator admission to the tournament. Co-chairs of this event are Deryk and Kyle Konhauzer. More lifeguards, more towers, equals more safety for you and city... BY FRED MAAS

Acting City Manager

For those of you who regularly visit your beach in Sunny Isles Beach, you will undoubtedly have noticed something extra and something extra special. Not only are there additional towers to cover the same amount of beach territory, there are additional lifeguards on duty to man those stations and that is extra special and extra safety for all who live and play on our beaches. Currently 9 towers are operational. Several are newly constructed by our talented public works employees, under the supervision of Mike Fiorey. The design of the new towers includes storage areas for emergency rescue equipment and A.D.A. accessible beach wheel chairs. The strategic location of the towers allows for more coverage of the same amount of beach territory and allows for ocean rescues to take place while not abandoning or compromising coverage of the beach. The ocean rescue towers are numbered according to street location as follows: 192, 189, 186, 182, 178, 174, 170, 167, and 158. In essence; more coverage, more manpower, more equipment, more safety and quicker response time for our patrons. This is where your tax dollars are being invested wisely and efficiently in a life saving, life

protecting fashion. In a recent interview with Ocean Rescue Manager, Justin Broman, he shared some information with us about their job and their history. Did you know that every year, your city’s lifeguards rescue approximately 75-persons from some type of peril or drowning in the Ocean? Did you know that in one incident, as many as 5 persons were rescued at one time? When rip currents occur or severe ocean conditions, no one is spared and multiple rescues can happen in a moment’s notice. In a single day, when swimmers don’t heed the warnings, hundreds of preventions are made by our Ocean Rescue Unit and numerous rescues as well. Their work is exhausting and at times life threatening for them as well as their victims. But they train, they compete, they train more and regularly and stay in shape. That is why they have the tremendous reputation they have as “One of the Best” units on the Southeast coast of Florida. We are proud of them and city officials have provided them with the tools necessary for their success because the City Commission puts Safety and Services for residents and visitors ahead of everything. So the next time, you walk the beach or go for a swim, even if it is part of your daily routine, when you pass by one of the many lifeguard towers, give a wave or a smile or offer a simple “Thank You” to those who help make Sunny Isles Beach safe.

SUCCESS, from page 1 and declining infrastructures, vast improvements since the city incorporated in 1997 have progressed so fast - it’s almost scary! TELLING ‘BOAST STORIES’ It was quite a frightful sight to see the old rundown motels that used to line Collins Avenue – but now, the wicked toll of time has been vanquished. Devilishly clever developers have invested millions to build exclusive oceanfront resorts and condominiums generating giant tax revenues that fund supernatural beautification and capital improvement projects. Thanks to the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department, nefarious criminals sucking the lifeblood out of the city’s image were run out of town and police response times improved so dramatically, officers are now on the scene almost before anyone can shriek for help! Due to vigilant traffic patrol, speed demons are also disappearing from city streets. Since there’s never a skeleton crew at Government Center, citizens benefit from efforts made by expert department heads and members of city staff – always collaborating to enhance quality of life. The City Commission also routinely holds meetings and workshops to discuss important issues and elicit public opinion knowing you can’t rely on witchcraft to make progress magically happen. In an effort to prevent any future hurricane horror stories, the city has an emergency disaster plan in place and has passed ordinances pertaining to compliance with building codes and repairing and/or demolishing unsafe structures. Knowing South Florida weather can change as drastically as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the city will also ensure construction sites are secured, mandatory evacuations proceed smoothly, traffic continues to flow and lines of communication remain open. Especially good news for families with children is bats are now “swinging” around the little league baseball field enhancing Pelican Community Park. Every mummy and daddy is also thrilled the city’s “grade A” school is providing even more proof the city is imbued with “Adams Family values.” Just in case any little green men ever land in the city, they’re sure to feel right at home at parks throughout the city providing an abundance of green, open space. And now, the city is also planning to build even more parks at the south end of the Sunny Isles Beach in keeping with goals to create and maintain a tropical-style enchanted forest. More music to the ears of all those who appreciate community unity is even the Phantom of the Opera would smile at the city’s popular Sunny Serenade concerts – plus the successful Sunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest garnering great notoriety for the city while benefitting worthy causes like Joshua’s Heart

Foundation. To find out about upcoming activities and events planned by the city’s Cultural and Community Services Department, be sure to check out the cobwebsite sibfl.net. Turning to tales from the crypt of history, prior to incorporation, trying to get better services from the county was almost as contentious as a battle between Freddy vs. Jason. But now, Sunny Isles Beach residents enjoy the best services and highest quality of life combining to create the perfect municipal love potion. Developers now know without “giving back” their projects don’t stand a ghost of a chance in Sunny Isles Beach! Make no bones about it - the monster success of luxurious oceanfront properties has also spawned attack of the killer capital improvements and beautification projects. Leaving no tombstone unturned, when it comes to finding dedicated leaders, there’s no need for a séance or Ouija board to call upon the “always at your service” Sunny Isles Beach City Commission: Mayor Norman S. Edelcup, Vice Mayor Lewis Thaler, Comm. George “Budd” Scholl, Comm. Jeanette Gatto and Comm. Isaac Aelion. Returning City Manager Christopher Russo, Police Chief Fred Maas, department heads and members of city staff are also part of the “Who ‘ya gonna call? Goal busters!” team on a mission to make the best even better. And if you didn’t already have a séance to predict the future, on Nov. 6, Sunny Isles Beach residents will go to the polls to vote for a City Commissioner representing the southern residential area - seat 3. Incumbent City Commissioner George “Bud” Scholl, seeking his second four-year term, is being opposed by Harvey Busch, Chair of the City Advisory Committee. Since attorney Jennifer Levin was the only candidate qualifying for the northern residential area - seat 1 (being vacated by Vice Mayor Lewis Thaler due to term limits), Levin will be automatically elected. So whether you come to the Booogie by the Beach event in costume or come as you are - you’re sure to be wearing a big smile while enjoying games, rides, music, crafts, entertainment, great food, and a spooky haunted house – all highlighting the boootiful life making Sunny Isles Beach such a monster success… Booogie by the Beach - the community’s invited Howl at the moon, bring the kids, get excited! Another fun city event bringing people together – Let’s all hope for picture perfect weather! Come as a ghoul, a goblin or a ghost Join in three-cheers and a non-bubbly toast! Have a great time and a happy Halloween Here’s to Sunny Isles Beach – the best city ever seen!

Department of Public Works provides prompt services to SIB Administrative Assistant to Department Head/Public Works

BY DEBRA L. LIMA

The Public Works Department provides prompt service to the residents of the City of Sunny Isles Beach in the areas of construction, fleet maintenance, street maintenance, including stormwater maintenance services within the City’s rights of way, facilities maintenance, and engineering. These services seek to enhance the high quality of life for the City’s residents, businesses and visitors by providing well planned, environmentally sensitive, cost effective methods to promote public health,

personal safety, transportation, economic growth and civic vitality. Visitors from around the world come here to enjoy the weather, our beautiful beaches and the ocean. Our guests, much like our residents enjoy swimming in the ocean. But no one wants to swim in polluted water. And polluting our water is against the law.

STORM DRAINS Rain water makes everything fresh and clean including our streets. And after a heavy rain, stormwater in our streets rushes into storm drains. These storm drains are important in providing a place for stormwater to go and help prevent our streets from

flooding. But it isn’t only rain water that rushes into storm drains. In urban areas, like Sunny Isles Beach, stormwater carries with it everything from our modern, urban lives, including cigarette butts, litter, lawn chemicals, pet waste, grease and motor oil. Everything that goes into storm drains impacts our ocean, and canals. For the most part, the water entering storm drains, unlike water entering sanitary sewers, does not get treated before entering Biscayne Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. IMPACT OF STORMWATER POLLUTION Polluted stormwater draining into our waterways is harmful to plants and animals.

Litter injures unsuspecting sea life like fish, turtles, and manatees. There are three main types of stormwater pollutants as follows: Litter: cans, paper and plastic bags and cigarette butts. Chemicals: detergents, automotive fluids and fertilizers. Organic waste: leaves, lawn and garden clippings and animal excrement. The employees of the Department of Public Works are dedicated to keeping our City clean. Litter pickup is performed to keep the storm drains clear and promote a neat appearance throughout the City. To report problems with litter call Public Works at (305) 792-1711.

PUBLIC WORKS PERMIT NEEDED FOR GOING UNDERGROUND If you hire a contractor to underground cable and utility lines, please inform them to obtain a Public Works permit from the City of Sunny Isles Beach before starting the work. This measure will ensure that property owners and the city are properly informed about such activity and when necessary, can take needed precaution to safeguard private and public property.

The Public Works Department is located on the 3rd Floor of City Hall at 18070 Collins Avenue or call (305) 792-1711.

Kapow! JCS Alliance turns to Batman to help Meals on Wheels Program

Over 180 members and friends of the JCS Alliance, Jewish Community Services’ young professionals group, recently sipped wines from around the world while exploring the unique exhibits of the Dezer Automobile Collection, Miami’s newest attraction of one-of-a-kind vehicles such as miniature and Hollywoodthemed cars. Guests at this kosher wine-tasting event had their photos taken in the original Batmobile and participated in raffles for prizes such as a ride in a Hollywood vehicle, half cases of wine and gift certificates from local establishments. Proceeds from the evening went to JCS’ Kosher Meals on Wheels Program, which annually serves 150,000 nutritionally balanced meals to nearly 650

elderly homebound recipients, many of whom are Holocaust survivors. Event Chairs Hinda Adler, Michelle Diener, Roberta Esquenazi, Sherri Lebwohl and Courtney Lenner were gratified by the support from the community for this vital service benefiting frail seniors, calling the event “a spectacular success that brought Miami’s young professional community together for a great cause.” In addition to Meals on Wheels, JCS annually provides nearly 75,000 meals to seniors at five congregate meals sites and helps over 600 adults and children through the JCS Kosher Food Bank. October Highlights BY RICHARD C. SCHULMAN

ODE TO COLUMBUS DAY Monday, October 8th Americans celebrated the Discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus. There are those who contend that the Norse Vikings, Irish missionaries or the ten lost tribes of Israel somehow discovered America before Columbus did; but the fact is that Columbus alone got back to the Old World and spread the word. Columbus Day is an Italian-American tradition. A man named William Monney founded an organization called the Society of St. Tammany that had what is generally regarded as the first American celebration of Columbus Day back in 1792. Later on, of course, Tammany turned to other things and this celebration became more closely involved with an organization aptly named the Knights of Columbus. Columbus Day owes a great deal to Knights. The New World or America Christopher Columbus discovered does not bear his name, but rather is named after Americo Vespuccio. Vespuccio claimed to have been the first to reach the continental mainland-in 1497 to be exact. Vespuccio got the continent, and history has certainly made it up to Christopher Columbus. And how many cities in the U.S. are named after Vespuccio? Columbus was gifted with courage and with the patience to

stick to the course he laid out for himself. There will always be new dimensions to be explored, new worlds to be discovered, in space, below the oceans. Sail on! Sail on! On Columbus Day, we honor his memory by remembering to sail on, with our eyes and hearts alert for the far horizon! Good sailing Chris! “GOBLINS AND BROOMSTICKS!” October 31st is Halloween- there are probably more superstitions about Halloween than about any other day of the year. Halloween used to signal the end of the harvest and was a time used by the ancient Celtic pagans to take stock of supplies for winter. They also believed the dead could reach the living on that day. And since they thought that the head was most powerful part of the body, they used that part of vegetables to carve a face and frighten off the scary things that they believed in. Jack O Lanterns were first carved from a turnip or rutabaga. They would place a skeleton on their window sill to represent the departed and protect their home. Halloween has changed greatly since ancient times. In today’s celebration most participate in Halloween as a fun day to party. In our imagination on that festive day witches float around on their brooms probably needing an air traffic controller. Go with the kids at night for Trick or Treat; be sure to look through their “Goodies” before they eat the candy. “Have a Safe Halloween everyone!”

Proposed changes to Florida Constitution on ballot R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Before reviewing the 12 proposed amendments to Florida’s Constitution, let’s examine for a moment the difference between a constitutional amendment and a law passed by the legislature. The Florida Constitution, like the U.S. Constitution, is the basic law of the land. It is, as they say, “cast in concrete” and can only be changed by a vote of the people. Laws are passed by our elected representatives and can be changed as the legislators feel appropriate without a vote of the people. So, if our legislature likes the changes why not just put them into law? After all the legislators that proposed the amendments have the votes to do so. Are they trying to say if they turn out bad we voted for them? One member of our legislature, on a recent TV talk show said, “Don’t blame us; we just put them on the ballot. The voters had the final say.” Remember, we didn’t ask for this vote. It was thrust upon us so we must read, understand and vote — we have no choice! When making my decision “yes” or “no” I took into consideration the recommendations of the League of Women Voters, the Miami Herald, Libertarian Alesh Houdek of Critical Miami, the Miami Association of Realtors and the Collins Center for Public Policy. Note that I have not printed the entire proposed amendments as they have too many words. Example: Amendment 1 contains approximately 315 words.

Amendment 1: Health Care Services Basically, this amendment would prohibit the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) from taking effect in Florida. The U.S. Supreme Court already has certified the law so all that will result from the passage of Amendment 1 would be a very expensive legal battle by the state, which inevitably will result in Florida losing the battle — a legal battle financed by the taxpayers of our state. The only result if passed would be to show Washington how the voters of Florida feel about the Affordable Care Act. Like the Affordable Care Act, or not, you should vote “NO” and save the state a lot of money. The proposed amendment is unconstitutional.

Amendment 2: Veterans Disabled Due To Combat Injury; Homestead Property Tax Discount Amendment 2 expands the homestead provision of our law to include veterans that were disabled before becoming a resident of

Florida. I must admit I do not understand this proposed amendment. Disabled veteran or not once you have established residency in Florida all Florida laws apply — including exemptions for veterans. I have asked several knowledgeable individual and they too do not understand. This one you are on your own. What I do not understand I do not support. I will vote “NO.” And, I am a vet of the Korean Conflict.

Amendment 3: State Government Revenue Limitation The amendment replaces the existing state revenue limitation currently based upon Florida personal income growth with a new system based upon inflation and population changes. The current limitation has not been reached since voters put it in the Constitution in 1994. However, our legislators still feel that it doesn’t go far enough and want the limits tightened up. One result would be that after collected taxes and fees reach the cap the excess would be returned to the taxpayers. Basically, the amendment tightens the state revenue limits in a way that could severely limit the amount of revenue required to meet the needs of the state. I am voting “NO.” The state needs the income flexibility to meet emergencies. Amendment 4: Property Tax Limitations (Etc) The amendment will create an additional homestead exemption for first time homebuyers. The concept sounds appealing, that it might encourage home buying. However, in a state without an income tax we cannot continue to create additional tax exceptions. The revenue is required to meet the financial needs of the state. I am voting “NO.”

Amendment 5: State Courts Amendment 5 dilutes the concept of separation of the three branches of government (legislative, executive and judicial) by giving the legislature power over the operations of the Florida judicial system. Examples: It would give the legislature power over the rules that govern the courts; it would weaken the ability of the governor to make judicial appointments and would allow the Speaker of the Florida House to review confidential files on all judicial nominees. I am voting “NO.”

Amendment 6: Prohibition On Public Funding Of Abortions (Etc) The legislature says that Amendment 6 was created to save the state money. Don’t believe it. To quote the Miami Herald: “It is an attempt to make an end run around voters’ approval of the privacy amendment to the

state’s Constitution and Supreme Court decisions that guarantee a woman’s right to seek an abortion.” It also stipulates that the state Constitution cannot be interpreted to include broader rights to an abortion than those contained in the U.S. Constitution. If you believe in restricting a women’s right to an abortion vote “YES.” If you believe a woman has a right to an abortion vote “NO.” I am voting “NO.” Amendment 7: Religious Freedom (This amendment was removed from the ballot and replaced with Amendment 8.)

Amendment 8: Religious Freedom If passed, Amendment 8 would reverse a 126-year state constitutional provision known as the Blaine Amendment that prohibits taxpayer funding of religious institutions. Amendment 8 started as No. 7 but was challenged in court by several educational groups. Leon County Circuit Judge Terry Lewis ruled that the legislative measure was deceptively worded and removed it from the ballot. The amended amendment would permit a voucher program, where state taxpayer funds would be used to pay for tuition at private religious schools. The proposal is not about religious freedom, it is about using taxpayer funds to finance private religious schools. I am voting “NO.”

Amendment 9: Homestead Property Tax Exemption For Surviving Spouse Of (Etc) Amendment 9 gives the legislature the ability to waive real estate taxes for surviving spouses of military veterans and first responders (fire rescue and police). While a state with no income tax should always be against excluding tax revenues for such items as expensive yachts, which are currently exempt from sales tax, the taxpayers of our state can certainly afford the small loss of revenue out of respect for those that gave, and will give, their lives in defense of our nation. I am voting “YES” on Amendment 9. Amendment 10: Tangible Personal Property Tax Exemption This is simply an exemption from ad valorem taxes on high valued tangible personal property. We simply cannot afford any more tax exemptions. The state, the counties, the municipalities need the revenue to function. It’s that or a state income tax. I vote “NO.”

Amendment 1: Additional Homestead Exemption, Low Income Seniors (Etc) You will not pay real estate taxes if you are over 65, have owned your home for 25 years or more and the home is valued at $250,000 or less and you have low income as defined by general law. Who owns a $250,000 home

VIEWPOINT and is classified as “low income?” The concept sounds great, but can we afford another tax exemption? I will vote “NO” on this one. And, I am way over 65.

Amendment 12: Appointment Of Student Body President (Etc) The president of the Florida Student Association is automatically a member of the State University System Board of Governors. Florida State University doesn’t want to pay the fee to be a member of the board of governors therefore the counsel of student presidents prohibits FSU’s student president from becoming a member of the board. I say forget the amendment. Have FSU pay the fee and not mess with our state Constitution. I will vote “NO.” On The Subject Of Judicual Retention Remember to vote “Retain” for the three Florida Supreme Court justices: R. Fred Lewis, Barbara Pariente and Peggy Quince, who are the vindictive objects of removal because they do not vote in keeping with the wishes of the Florida Legislature. I will vote “TO RETAIN” the three judges. One Final Comment The ballot that is being placed before Miami-Dade voters is an abomination, 10 pages long and in three languages. I have spent hours reviewing the candidates for election to public office, the proposed amendments to our state Constitution, judicial retention and amendments to MiamiDade County charter. The average voter will spend at least an hour in the voting booth going over the ballot before making his or her selections OR they will walk out in disgust and not even vote. This is ridiculous and an offence to the voting public. If the legislature wants to do something constructive, mandate that the ballot be published in three separate editions: one in English, one in Spanish and one in Creole. The way it is now printed most voters will vote for President and walk out of the booth. NEXT ISSUE: Proposed changes to the Miami-Dade Charter.
