Lots to be thankful for

BY BARI AUERBACH

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, everyone’s thinking about eating turkey and watching football - but what about reflecting upon the plethora of things city residents are thankful for? Here are just some of the assets enticing people from all over the world to make a “pilgrimage” to Sunny Isles Beach….

Thanks for the Improvements: The city’s budget includes funding for ongoing capital improvements, new parks plus many more great municipal assets…In fact, the list of improvements is so long, even Santa may not be able to match all the “gifts that will keep on giving” for many years to come. Thanks for the Great School: Parents and kids are still celebrating the A grades earned by the Norman S. Edelcup K-8 Sunny Isles Beach School now expanding to add more classrooms….Rumor has it, a “customized” curriculum may soon be introduced featuring classes like “Tanning 101”; “Condo Board Meeting Etiquette”; and a class that should be mandatory for such a diverse community: “International Relations.” Thanks for Traffic Safety: The city is always stepping up efforts to keep Sunny Isles Beach streets safe – but ever wonder if it would just be easier to make it manda-

tory for every citizen to ride the city’s shuttle bus? This could result in a lot less traffic and instead of paying for expensive gas, you could buy an even bigger turkey for Thanksgiving dinner – or better yet – have it gourmet catered from the Epicure market! Thanks for All the Fun: Concerts, movie nights, trips, sports programs and special holiday events are always being planned by the city’s Cultural and Community Services Department that has inadvertently tapped into the secret to world peace: Parties like the recent “Booogie by the Beach” promoting unity with an unbeatable weapon: Free food!

Thanks for the Technology: Now that parks in Sunny Isles Beach have wireless Internet access, it’s easier than ever to log on to the city’s high-tech website (sibfl.net) and keep up to date on important city news, meetings and special events. You can find just about everything you’re looking for – except a great date…so if you’re single, you may want to email a suggestion that the city add a link like Sunny Perfect Match.com

Thanks for the Progress: Overall, residents agree they enjoy life in the city known as “Florida’s Riviera” where luxury now reigns supreme. So when you’re stuffed from all the turkey and it’s the fourth quarter, just look outside your window and join in reciting this apropos mantra: Every day is Thanksgiving Day in Sunny Isles Beach!

NOVEMBER 15, 2012, IS HOMELESS AWARENESS DAY IN SUNNY ISLES BEACH Esq., SIB Commissioner-Elect

BY JENNIFER LEVIN

This year the MIAMI-DADE COUNTY HOMELESS TRUST celebrates its fourth annual HOMELESS AWARENESS DAY ON NOVEMBER 15, 2012. The day is designed to create unity among providers, community, families and students to educate, unify and inspire change. It just takes educating a diverse community on the simple steps we can take to help end homelessness.

In preparation for serving as a Commissioner, I enrolled in the 8-day 2012 Leaders of Excellence program, run by The Good Government Initiative at the University of Miami. The Good Government Initiative was founded by former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson, who now, in addition to her involvement in many other community projects, acts as the CEO and President of the Initiative. The purpose of the program is to educate elected officials at the state and local levels in the important issues of governance. The Leaders of Excellence program has been held at different and divergent venues throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. One of our seminars was held at one of the two Chapman Partnership’s Homeless Assistance Centers located on 15th Street and North Miami Avenue. The Center, housed on a full city block, contains housing, pre-school facilities, a clinic operated by Jackson Memorial Hospital, a courtyard where residents can commune and relax, and a kitchen serving the Center that also provides on-the-job training to the residents. During the day, we were educated on the MIAMIDADE COUNTY HOMELESS TRUST, the Trust’s private-sector partner the CHAPMAN PARTNERSHIP, and homelessness in South Florida. The Trust and the Miami-Dade County Community Homeless Plan have been hailed as models across the nation for their progressive approach to ending homelessness. The success of the Trust, the Homeless Plan and the Partnership is primarily as a result of the existence of a unique, dedicated funding source – the only one of its type in the Country. The Trust operates on an annual budget of approximately $40 million, comprised of local food and beverage tax proceeds, federal (United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, a/k/a HUD) and state funding. Approximately $30 million annually is provided through a competitive process via HUD, with more than $15 million resulting from Food and Beverage Tax collections. The balance is a combination of other state funding and private sector contri-

butions through the Chapman Partnership. The Trust receives no general (ad valorem tax) funds from Miami-Dade County. More than 80 programs are funded by the Homeless Trust, providing everything from emergency, transitional and permanent supported housing, to legal assistance, employment services, mental health and substance abuse outpatient therapy, to street outreach. The Chapman Partnership is another model of achievement, boasting a 63% success rate in placing Assistance Center residents into permanent or transitional housing. Overall, the implementation of the Miami-Dade County Community Homeless Plan has reduced homelessness on the streets of the County from an estimated 8,000 ten years ago, to fewer than 900 today. During the last year alone, more than 4,700 persons were placed in emergency beds, and another 10,300 persons were served in transitional and permanent housing programs.

HOMELESS AWARENESS DAY is coordinated by the Homeless Trust to educate the community on the ongoing needs of the homeless and what the community can do to help. During our visit to the Chapman Partnership’s North Center, we were asked to return to our respective cities and ask that they declare November 15, 2012, as Homeless Awareness Day. I did, and at the October Sunny Isles Beach Commission meeting Mayor Edelcup gave to me on behalf of the Trust, a Proclamation declaring November 15, 2012, as Homeless Awareness Day in Sunny Isles Beach. On Friday, October 26, I attended the Homeless Trust’s Board Meeting and on behalf of Sunny Isles Beach, I proudly presented our City’s Proclamation to Ron Book, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, who accepted on behalf of the Trust. I was also instrumental in beginning a dialogue directly between the Trust and our police department to improve services to homeless persons by putting the Trust’s Executive Director, Hilda

Proclamation to Ron Book, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, who accepted on behalf of the Trust.

Fernandez, in touch with our Chief of Police, Fred Maas. The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department recently hosted a meeting with some surrounding police departments, the Homeless Trust, and the Trust’s Homeless Outreach Teams, to educate the police forces on how they can assist the homeless in their respective areas and better coordinate the services that are available and can be provided to the homeless.

HOMELESS AWARENESS DAY includes many activities designed to educate our community about the plight of homelessness and what is being done to end it. The events include “cardboard brigades” of high school students and student rallies at local universities. Our County Mayor, Carlos A. Gimenez, is also hosting a business forum to share with businesses how they, too, can help us end homelessness. Details will be unveiled during the “Mayor’s Forum on Ending Homelessness” on an enhanced telephone and web-based helpline that builds upon the 17year-old Project HOPE program (HOmeless Program for Employment) operated by Jewish Community Services (JCS) of South Florida’s Rehabilitation and Employment Division and funded by the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust. The HOPE initiative provides businesses with homeless/formerly-homeless, jobready candidates, as well as providing vocational training and job development services to individuals transitioning back into the community. The centralized helpline makes it easy for businesses to access a pool of pre-qualified individuals by simply calling or emailing their list of available positions and job requirements. JCS then matches employees with the needs of the companies. JCS’ successful “day labor” program provides supervised temp-like employment services to local businesses for up to 30 days, during which time JCS covers the costs of FICA, and Worker’s Compensation, medical and unemployment insurance. Individuals in the HOPE program have been placed in local businesses doing everything from landscaping to clerical work. Many have been subsequently hired by the businesses. Mayor Gimenez will also recognize local businesses that are already doing their part to help end homelessness in our community by either hiring homeless/formerly homeless persons or adopting donation meters to raise funds to house homeless families. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP THE HOMELESS Businesses interested in hiring formerly homeless individuals who are job-ready, can call 305-403-6570. Local organizations, private corporations and individuals may sponsor an “Adopt-AHomeless Donation Meter”, a Trust program that permits the sponsorship of a Romero

2013 Kia adds sporty Limited trim to Optima lineup Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Kia Optima may be the best buy in a midsize family sedan on the U.S. market today. Since being completely redesigned in 2010, Optima has become Kia’s best seller. Built at Kia’s plant in West Point, GA, the 2013 Optima lineup has been expanded with the new and sporty top-of-the-line Limited trim. The Optima has a sleek silhouette, an aggressive stance and a bold face, with the Kia badge on the tabbed grille complemented by projector headlights. The roofline connects with the pronounced shoulder line, leading to sculpted flanks and accentuating the extended wheelbase. Flared wheel arches and a raked cabin create a sedan with a graceful muscular presence. On the inside, the instrument panel is contoured toward the driver to create a “cockpit” feel, with precise gauges and

steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The seats and trim are of Nappa leather, with wood interior accents, an electronic parking brake and a first aid kit. A sportinspired Sportmatic shifter delivers crisp shifts, while an available panoramic sunroof provides an open-air feeling. All Optimas come well equipped, with the LX trim offering dual exhaust with chrome tips, solar glass, exterior mirror turn signal indicators, front fog lights, exterior heated mirrors, chrome-accented exterior door handles, 16-inch alloy wheels and a six-speed automatic transmission. The EX has larger 17-inch alloy wheels, while the SX has more stylish 18-inch polished alloy wheels, unique front and rear lower bumpers and side sills, a rear lip spoiler, aero wiper blades and HID headlights with auto leveling. The new top-of-the-line Limited trim brings a level of sporty refinement, adding unique 18-inch chrome wheels, daytime running lights, red brake calipers, chromeaccented side sills, chromed-side mirrors and a rear spoiler. In addition to its sporty personality, the Optima is loaded with standard convenience features and functionality, such as a

six-way adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar support, tilt and telescopic steering column, glove box cooling capabilities and automatic light control. Additional standard interior features include power door locks, power windows and sun visor extension. The 2013 Optima offers a choice of two fuel-efficient, powerful Theta II engines with gasoline direct injection (GDI), including a 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder or a 2.0-liter GDI turbo engine. A 2.4-liter hybrid powertrain also is available. The 2.4-liter GDI engine produces 200 hp, while the 274-hp 2.0-liter turbo GDI engine (SX models) delivers V-6 type

power with four-cylinder efficiency. Each engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic clutchless shifting. Both engines deliver good fuel economy; the 2.4-liter four-cylinder posts 24/35 mpg while the 2.0-liter turbo GDI gets 22/34 mpg. Base price on the 2013 Kia Optima LX is $21,200. MY THANKSGIVING THOUGHTS BY RICHARD C. SCHULMAN

City Historian

NOVEMBER 22, 2012

Too often we thoughtlessly think of Thanksgiving Day as a day of leisure. Do we not have much more to be thankful for than the Pilgrims who were looking for a New World and new freedom? They found it on our shores, and they gave thanks to God for their survival. Besides continually reaping our yearly gains, we have been reaping the fruits of the labor of the men and women of the past centuries. You might ask, “What have they done?” Our land has been cleared and farms built up. Machinery has been invented and our land is beautiful and sanitary. An educational system has been established. Our land is full of universities and colleges where we learn and profit by the truths which others have though out for us. We have freedom of religion. Think of the lives of the great religious

leaders of the past. Can we not say that our heritage has indeed been a rich one? Most of us live a life far removed from real want. Few of us daily encounter muggers, miss a meal out of necessity or have the greedy and corrupt snatch our savings from us. Certainly, most of us can be thankful for the necessities of life… Health… Freedom… Time, to enjoy our loved ones on a fall day. Thanksgiving is our nation’s family day, possibly more so than any other day in the year. It is a day when we are reminded that “no man liveth unto himself” It matter not what our station in life may be; what our prosperity or adversity; this day emphasizes our mutual independence and our responsibility one to another. Doubtless there are many people throughout the country today called cynics who, in their distress and privations, feel that a day of thanksgiving has no adequate place in their life. It is easy to be thankful where every condition favors us, where the necessities of life are abundantly supplied and health dwells at our fireside! To use the language of an American Poet: “Tis easy enough to be pleasant when life flows along like a song.”

Thanksgiving Day affords our citizens the opportunity of making a mental audit of their assets and liabilities, both spiritual and material. This festival is America’s only religious feast. Its character is fundamentally social, fraternal, and inspirational. The memory of it, when it has passed, should help the Nation look forward to even a happier Thanksgiving next year. Thanksgiving Day is not merely a time for an extra dinner, neither is it a time to do all the thanking for the 365 days of the year. It is the day to remind us to say, “thank you” a little more often to God and to men. In 1864, in the midst of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln asked the people of the United States to meet in their places of worship and give thanks to almighty God for the blessing they enjoyed. This proclamation marked the beginning of the Nations annual observance of Thanksgiving Day. Since Lincoln’s assassination, each President was induced to issue proclamations calling upon the people to observe the last Thursday in November as a special day for giving thanks, and Thanksgiving Day is now a national holiday.

LETS CELEBRATE! EAT, LOVE, LAUGH, WORK, AND SHARE. WE HAVE GOD’S BLESSINGS AND WE HAVE EACH OTHER! HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!

Beginning with a Gala Event on Sunday December 9th at 7:00 pm, the company of the A rts Ballet Theatre of Florida will once again journey to the Land of the Sweets, as they perform the traditional annual audience favorite, The Nutcracker. This holiday ‘chestnut’ depicts the tale of a young girl, Clara, on Christmas Eve and the adventure she undertakes when her most cherished Christmas present, a nutcracker, comes to life. Together they battle the Mouse King, travel to the Land of Sweets, enjoy festivities with delicious international treats, and finally travel home. Company members of Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida are exceptionally excited about this year’s performances of The Nutcracker and are proud to give life to the roles of the Sugarplum Fairy and her cavalier, the Nutcracker Prince, the Marzipan dance, the Snow Queen and all of the other wonderful characters that light up the eyes of all ages of audiences during the holiday season, to celebrate Arts Ballet Theatre’s fifteen years of bringing affordable and exquisite ballet to South Florida! There will be three venues showcasing the critically acclaimed performances of Vladimir Issaev’s holiday tradition - the stages of the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater, the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and The Parker Playhouse of Fort Lauderdale. The company is most excited about the opening gala celebration performance at the Fillmore/Gleason, which will truly celebrate the company’s fifteen years of making holiday magic. For VIP Patrons, the December 9th Gala will begin at 6:00 pm, with tapas and libations, a reception with the international corps of dancers, and chances to bid on silent auction items that range from donations from

THANKSGIVING, from page 1 A group of people rallying for incorporation, known as “Concerned Citizens of Northeast Dade” were led by civic activists including the late Mayor David Samson. Brave and persistent, they made a pilgrimage downtown and secured support from a strong ally - Sen. Gwen Margolis. After freedom fighters formed a Charter Commission and drafted a Charter there was a landslide vote in favor of incorporation and the City of Sunny Isles Beach was officially born. But this was just the start of greater things to come. In 1997, newly elected members of the City Commission began the challenging task of transforming a declining tourist destination into a vibrant, progressive city. ‘NEW WORLD OF DIFFERENCE’ One of the first promises kept by the City Commission was the formation of a firstclass Police Department. Thanks to a tribe of “best in blue” officers now led by wise Chief Fred Maas, criminals behaving like wild Indians no longer posed a great threat to peace and security; state-of-the-art patrol cars could ride like the wind to respond to calls; and a philosophy of community policing prevailed. With motorcycles, all terrain vehicles, jet skis and boats, vigilant patrols were always looking out for the welfare of citizens. Positive changes were happening fast…the only thing slowing down was traffic on

BOOOGIE, from page 1

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Collins Avenue and around interior neighborhoods welcoming reduced speed limits. From the startup of a convenient shuttle bus service - to the creation of a Cultural and Community Services Department planning trips, concerts and special events for the whole community to enjoy, the wheels of progress continued to turn. Like emerging colonies, distinct city departments were also established – each with a proactive mission based on promoting the highest quality of life, working in conjunction with the City Manager. Public Works started cleaning up the streets and removing overgrown brush. Code Enforcement encouraged citizens to be law abiding and promote an upscale image. The Building Department recruited a team of expert officials and inspectors. The Finance Department helped draft feasible budgets; highly qualified zoning and community development experts were charged with promoting optimal development. An Administrative Services Department was created to keep things running smoothly. And a Cultural and Community Services was established to plan enriching, entertaining “community unity” events for residents of all ages to enjoy. ‘PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE’ Pioneers of progress were called into action once again when a Citizens’ Planning Advisory Committee was formed

“trick-or-treat” stations, where they could play a game (or test a skill) in return for earning a prize. There were also balloon artists and face painters on hand, to help spice up that costume, or else give those that didn’t have a costume, a special look to fit right in. The feature presentation was an interactive break dance show, by No Bodies Crew, who incorporated various themed acts into the performance, including Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. With audience participation, the gymnasium was filled with onlookers, crowding the stage to see our own local talents. The event also included carnival rides for various ages to enjoy, including the Jack & Jill Fair Slide, the Rock Climbing Wall, and much more! Guests could take a picture in our pumpkin patch, stroll through the rides, or sit back and enjoy the entertainment from the DJ. On Saturday night the annual Costume Contest was

held and prizes in various categories were awarded. It’s amazing the imaginations that some of our residents have and the costumes they come up with! The highlight of the event, as always, was the two-level haunted house. Level One was of a mildly scary nature, but even that proved too much for some. Level Two, for the more daring, certainly worked its magic as screams could be heard throughout the maze of rooms. Some residents made multiple trips through the Haunted House. They couldn’t get enough of the fun! City event planners are already scheming for next year’s themes for the ‘Haunted’ rooms. This is one event that is just as much fun for the staff as it is for the participants! Call the Cultural & Community Services Department for information on upcoming events, at 305.792.1706.

to help draft a Comprehensive Plan shaping the future of development in Sunny Isles Beach. Working late into the night in Commission chambers (formerly located in an RK Shopping Center), residents, business and community leaders discussed pivotal issues such as beach access and zoning codes designed to foster optimal development along Collins Avenue and Sunny Isles Boulevard. Soon, old rundown motels along the east side of Collins Avenue started to disappear and multi-million dollar developments began to rise. Relics of the past like Colonial Inn were replaced with the futuristic Pinnacle by J. Milton & Associates, The Related Group’s Ocean One…Two…Three, etc. And soon after, international publications announced the triumphant news that Donald J. Trump, the Trumps of Williams Island, Turnberry Associates and other world-famous developers such as Fortune International were landing on Sunny Isles Beach. As property values continued to climb, taxes stayed low - but adhering to the motto “good isn’t good enough,” the City Commission voted to embark on another ambitious initiative supporting the goal to make Sunny Isles Beach “Florida’s Riviera.” ‘SWEEPING CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS’ While residents of Golden Shores were cheering a much needed stormwater drainage and street paving project, pow wows were being held and the City Commission ultimately voted for a “feast your eyes on this” comprehensive capital improvement plan benefiting the entire city.

Page 21

Primarily targeting beautification, park development, a streetscape plan, future property acquisitions and road resurfacing, the capital improvements would promote the highest quality of life - yet Sunny Isles Beach would still maintain one of the lowest property tax rates in Miami-Dade County. In keeping with the pioneer spirit, a Citizens’ Advisory Council was also formed so residents could provide input to the City Commission while volunteering to serve on committees relating to public good and welfare. Accomplishing even more visionary projects, a gala groundbreaking ceremony at the Tony Roma’s site marked the beginning of construction for the magnificent new Government Center now gracing Collins Avenue. As the city welcomed more and more Sunny Isles Beach settlers including many families with children, the Commission realized the need for city parks and a school. Continued efforts to acquire land and grant funds helped make the dream come to fruition as park dedications ensued and the Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8 opened in the fall of 2008. MUCH MORE TO BE THANKFUL FOR In 1676, the town council of Charlestown, Massachusetts officially declared a day of Thanksgiving and now in 2012 and beyond, the Sunny Isles Beach City Commission has pledged to continue forging ahead with progressive initiatives residents and visitors are sure to be especially thankful for.

WALK, from page 1 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ning and logistics of this walk, one could see the supreme effort put forth by the committee to make the event successful. Romero Britto donated his design for shirts to raise funds. These shirts were worn by walkers and supporters and continue to be on sale through the committee members. Current President Fanny Korn, introduced speakers, including a special guest from the Miami Herald, Andrea Torres, who recounted her struggle with the disease. Madi’s friend and Simcha Past President Susan Metsch addressed the group and SIB Mayor Norman S. Edelcup participated in the gathering. The City of Sunny Isles Beach sponsored the walk and the SIB Police Department provided a custom decorated pink patrol car to lead the way and provide safe crossing. Snacks were donated by Costco, Mo’s Bagel, Bagel Works for participants. A

personal trainer led the crowd in a prewalk warm-up. Participants walked from Pelican Community Park along Collins Avenue to Town Center Park at 17200 Collins Avenue. City staff worked out an alternate route with the organizers to continue the event despite an unexpected high tide. The City Community Shuttle Bus was on hand to transport walkers back to their vehicles. Co-chairs of the event Fanny Korn, Trina Duluc and Carmen Greer ,Audrey Reinhartz, Roberta Rousseau spent many hours planning every detail to make this a successful event. FPL CORNER Burn and fire prevention SWAT team descends upon Westchester neighborhood as part of “Safer Homes, Fewer Burns” public service outreach program

FPL teamed up with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the UM/JM Burn Center to conduct home safety makeovers for approximately 50 local residents In partnership with Miami-Dade County, MiamiDade Fire Rescue, and the UM/JM Burn Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, Florida Power & Light Company visited approximately 50 families in the Westchester neighborhood today to conduct free safety makeovers, evaluating potential for burns and other electrical and fire safety hazards. The “Safer Homes, Fewer Burns” initiative coincided with National Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 7-13). Miami-Dade County Commissioner Javier D. Souto, Fire Marshall Chief Arthur L. Holmes, and Dr. Louis Pizano of the JM/UM Burn Center all joined forces with the FPL team to work with the homeowners to lessen their risk of burns and fires. “Safety and savings are cornerstones of our company’s commitment to our customers,” said Manny J. Rodriguez, FPL’s regional external affairs manager for Miami-Dade County. “We’re thankful for the opportunity to unite with our partners to raise awareness of the dangers of burns and fires, helping customers learn how to be safer while saving energy and money at the same time.” To commemorate the occasion, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Souto has proclaimed Oct. 10 as “Burn Prevention Day” in the County. According to the CDC, there are 1.1 million burn injuries every year that require medical attention, with scalding water being the leading cause of burns. "This is an excellent opportunity to remind my constituents in District 10, in fact all residents of Miami-Dade County, to take the necessary precautions to ensure their homes, inside and out, are safe from electrical and fire hazards,” said Commissioner Souto. “I would like to thank all of the individuals with FPL, the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and UM/JM Burn Center at Jackson’s Ryder Trauma Center who dedicated their time and services to this community event." Twelve teams of “Safer Homes, Fewer Burns” volunteers conducted safety makeovers including adjusting water heater temperatures, checking the safety of fuse boxes and power outlets, and checking smoke detectors to replace the equipment or replace batteries. Most of the “Safer Homes, Fewer Burns” work can be replicated by consumers at home using the following tips. · In the kitchen, ensure the stovetop is clean with no grease or clutter; pot handles should be turned towards the back of the stove · Check the condition of all electrical cords and extension cords. If they are damaged, cracked, or loose, replace them · Make sure any space heaters are at least three feet from anything that can catch fire · If you have a fireplace, ensure that the chimney has been inspected or cleaned within the last year · Install smoke alarms on every level, inside each bedroom, and outside each sleeping area. · All your smoke alarms should be newer than 10 years old · Test all smoke alarms once a month · Never overload electrical outlets · Check your clothes dryer’s exhaust to make sure it’s not clogged with lint · To avoid hot water scalds, make sure your water heater is set at no higher than 120°F. This can also save you money on your electric bill · Use only professionals to trim trees near power lines and call 811 two full business days before planting or digging to locate underground utilities to avoid injury “The UM/JM Burn Center is experienced in treating numerous types of burns from extremely severe to mild,” said Dr. Louis Pizano, medical director of the UM/JM Burn Center. “However, most of these burns are preventable by fire proofing your homes and being aware of the proper protocol when handling boiling water, other hot liquids and objects.” In representing the UM/JM Burn Center, Dr. Louis Pizano was joined by Drs. Carl Schulman, associate director of the UM/JM Burn Center, and Nicholas Namias, medical director of the Ryder Trauma Center, along with Don Steigman, chief operating officer of Jackson Health System, and Alexander Contreras, chief administrative officer of Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Mount Sinai Medical Center launches lung screening program 90% of lung cancers are curable with early detection

Relay for Life announces Sponsorship Chair

Rotem Adar is on our Relay For Life Committee as Survivor Chairperson, Mini and Seno Bril to serve as sponsors for Survivor Chair for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Sunny Isles Beach, Golden Beach and Aventura. Rotem Adar is a breast cancer survivor and Mini and Seno Bril are community leaders and generous philanthropists. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Dr. Roy Williams (back right) is one of only a few surgeons in the nation with experience in robotic, minimally invasive lung surgery, which can be used to treat and cure lung cancer when caught in its early stages. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women – responsible for more deaths each year than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined. In the U.S., tobacco use still accounts for 87 percent of lung cancer deaths; and, smokers are up to 30 times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers are. However, when diagnosed early, more than 90 percent of lung cancers can be cured with prompt surgical intervention. In an effort to save more lives from this disease, Mount Sinai Medical Center has developed a lung cancer screening program that aims to diagnose lung cancer in its earliest possible stage. Lung cancer in its early stages has no symptoms. Hence, more than 85 percent of men and women diagnosed with lung cancer are found to be in a late stage of the disease with very little chance of being cured. However, low-dose CT lung cancer screenings, available at Mount Sinai, offers greater hope for survival through early detection, especially for high-risk patients. A Computerized Tomography (CT) lung scan is an efficient and painless exam. It combines special X-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images of your lungs, taken from different angles. Mount Sinai is able to provide a low-dose lung screening because, as a Radiation Safety Provider, we have instituted safeguards to ensure the smallest amount of radiation dose exposure to patients undergoing testing. These safeguards help eliminate duplicate

studies in the future and ensure that you receive the information you need with the least amount of exposure. Recently, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Task Force for Lung Cancer Screening and Surveillance released clinical guidelines recommending annual lung cancer screenings with low-dose CT for smokers and former smokers age 55 to 79 with a 30 pack-year history, or age 50 with a 20 pack-year history and additional risk factors. “Based on these new guidelines, we are pleased to announce that Mount Sinai Medical Center’s multidisciplinary lung cancer screening program is an opportunity to offer high-risk patients a greater chance of surviving lung cancer,” said Dr. Roy F. Williams, thoracic surgeon with Mount Sinai’s Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Dr. Williams is one of only a few surgeons in the nation with experience in minimally invasive lung surgery, and Mount Sinai is one of a select few hospitals in South Florida offering robotic lung surgery, which requires less time in the hospital and offers a quicker recovery. Mount Sinai’s multidisciplinary approach leads to greater accuracy of diagnosis, consistent clinical results, decreased time to treatment and higher patient satisfaction. To learn more about Mount Sinai’s lung screening program, or to schedule an appointment, please call 305-535-3434 or visit www.msmc.com.

The world’s largest grassroots fundraising movement, Relay For Life mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and provide participants with an opportunity to fight back against the disease. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay. Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups . . . people from all walks of life – all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives and create more birthdays by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. “Here in Sunny Isles Beach, Golden Beach, Aventura funds raised by our Relay For Life event are making an impact on so many lives, said Judith Greenfield, Publicity Chairperson for this event. “From making possible the vital American Cancer Society programs and services that support those in our community facing a diagnosis, to life-changing cancer research

and medical discovery, to advocacy for access to quality health care for everyone affected by cancer, the money raised through Relay For Life of Sunny Isles Beach, Golden Beach, Aventura is helping further the vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays.” The Relay For Life of Sunny Isles Beach, Golden Beach, Aventura takes place at Heritage Park, 19200 Collins Avenue, Sunny Isles Beach on April 20 to April 21. To participate, call Wendy Viciana at American Cancer Society at 305-779-2853. For more information about how Relay For Life benefits the local community, contact the American Cancer Society at 1800-227-2345, or visit RelayForLife.org.

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; by helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us anytime, day or night, at 1800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
