nowing about all the progressive initiatives going on in Sunny Isles Beach should make residents and visitors feel fortunate to live, work and play in the city becoming internationally known as “Florida’s Riviera.” DID YOU KNOW… At the Nov. 15 City Commission meeting, a resolution was approved accepting results of the Nov. 6 general election, declaring George “Bud” Scholl to be elected as Commissioner, Seat 3 (southern area); and declaring Jennifer Levin as Commissioner, Seat 1 (northern area), who was automatically elected having no opponents. Scholl, who will now embark on his second four-year term, defeated opponent Harvey Busch by 548 votes, earning 57 percent of the vote while Busch got 43 percent of the vote. Levin is filling the seat of Vice Mayor Lewis Thaler, who was term-limited out. Thank You for the Respect and Support

I

would like to thank all of you, the residents of Sunny Isles Beach, for the respect you have shown towards me and the rest of the commission in my nine years as a commissioner. It has been a pleasure serving all of you and I hope to continue serving you in the future. There are so many things that have happened in the City in my two terms that it is hard to pick one that stands out above all the others. If I had to pick one, it would be the building of the school. That partnership with Miami-Dade County Schools changed the City in many ways. The average age of the residents in the City dropped because of all the young peo-

ple moving into the city. And as a result of the influx of younger families, the school enrollment has increased. We have almost 1,800 children in our Norman S. Edelcup SIB K-8 school and 300 more than previously projected at Alonzo & Tracy Mourning High School. The fact that we have a school within our city limits was a draw for potential home buyers and surely helped to increase sales for the beautiful new buildings that have gone up in Sunny Isles Beach. The City has gone from an average place to live, to one which we are all proud to call “Home.” Again, it was my pleasure to serve you; and I thank you for the nine great years. — Vice Mayor Lewis J. Thaler

Lehman Causeway soon to welcome bike riders BY COMMISSIONER JEANETTE GATTO

Next month construction will begin for the installation of eastbound and westbound bike lanes on the Lehman Causeway. This is the first interstate program of its kind in the area. A few years ago Vice Mayor Lewis J. Thaler advocated for bike lanes and a pedestrian walkway on the Lehman Causeway but at the time it was difficult to convince the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) of the need. Then, back in October of 2011 I met with a resident of Sunny Isles Beach named Nilda Montoya who requested that the City Commission try again. Nilda was advocating for a pedestrian walkway and took it upon herself to contact key executives at FDOT, as well as Senator Gwen Margolis, to solicit their help for this project. Her purpose for meeting with me was to get the Sunny Isles Beach City Commission

on board with the idea. After our meeting I approached the City Manager who met with FDOT to see if the idea could be revived. FDOT agreed to look at designs for bike lanes only, however. On February 23, 2012 a Public Information meeting was held at Aventura’s City Hall to discuss the project. Subsequently, on August 3, 2012

the Sunny Isles Beach City Commission received a letter from Gus Pego, FDOT’s District Secretary, announcing installation of bike lanes on a test project basis. We applaud FDOT’s willingness to expand the use of the bridge beyond just vehicles and we hope that the same courtesy will be extended to pedestrians in the near future.

SUNNY ISLES BEACH • • LIFE IN THE CITY • • CITY OFDECEMBER 2012 ‘In the Know’

BY BARI AUERBACH

Whether you live in Sunny Isles Beach or you’re just visiting, here are some “in the know” tips you should know about in order to derive maximum enjoyment from all the city’s great services and amenities… • Knowing you don’t have to cook and can order takeout for holiday parties from the city’s Epicure Gourmet Market and Café is really the greatest gift of the season ! • Knowing if you overeat during the holidays, you can always burn off the extra calories by working out at Crunch gym or running along the city’s beautiful beach. Then again, you may decide to wait until New Year’s to make a diet resolution you can always think about making again next year when you don’t keep it. • Knowing not to tune into easy listening radio stations when stuck in traffic during holiday time is of upmost importance in order not to fall asleep behind the wheel! You may want to consider buying some new high-energy CDs or maybe even some

jazzy ones if you loved the recent Sunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest! • Knowing the Norman S. Edelcup K-8 School is expanding to add more classrooms…So if you were thinking about starting or growing a family – now would be the perfect time to do it! • Knowing the city approved its 2012/2013 fiscal year budget with no increase in property taxes means you can spend extra money on home improvements – after all, with $40 million mansions in the sky coming to the east side of Collins Avenue, it seems like a bargain to invest in a few new area rugs, pillows and plants! • Knowing that now that the election is over, mail carriers will be in a much better mood since they don’t have to tote around bags bursting with campaign ads…But don’t forget, during holiday time, it’s important to “ship early” to guarantee your gift will get where it’s supposed to go before next Christmas! • Knowing parks in Sunny Isles Beach offer free Wi-Fi service means now your Facebook status can always say, I’m basking in the glory of warm winter weather – making everyone else freezing in the snow want to delete you from their friends list!

Prepaid card fast becoming ideal choice for cons artists

Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH Green Dot has become the nation’s No. 1 provider of prepaid debit cards, but with their rise in prominence, there’s been an increase in scams that have taken advantage of the services that they offer. There have been 84 complaints since 2011 regarding the Green Dot cards, and according to a spokesperson for the Florida Attorney General’s office, these numbers are increasing at a rapid rate. An advisory was issued by the Better Business Bureau when nearly 40 borrowers lost tens of thousands of dollars sending financing charges on MoneyPaks. According to the Federal Trade Commission, thieves running scams now are asking for MoneyPak payments, and more than 40 percent of their victims are over the age of 70. Green Dot does not take responsibility for any fraudulent act that may occur through the use of its card. The money loaded onto the MoneyPaks is untraceable, similar to any common wire transactions. Companies similar to Green Dot, such as MoneyGram and Western Union, have adopted fraud detection programs and electronic transaction flagging systems, making Green Dot the ideal choice victim for con artists. Purchasing Green Dot prepaid cards is easy as they are found at most large retailers, major discount store chains, and drug stores. The MoneyPaks can be utilized to securely store funds until which time that they are transferred to another account or loaded onto another debit card. They are not meant for direct purchases.

Law enforcement and consumer agencies have agreed to partner with Green Dot in hopes of isolating the previous scam cases. MoneyPak has provided a simpler way to send money where you need it the most. Consumers have the option to load up to $1,500 each day on MoneyPaks for just $5.95 per transaction. The money is held by a partner bank of Green Dot, and accessed through the number on the back of the card. Fraudulent acts take place by coercing victims to load their MoneyPak cards, and then call back with the access number. Unfortunately, victims are unaware of how simple it is for crooks to gain access and empty out the accounts when using MoneyPaks. Green Dot encourages all customers to be aware of common scams and follow these additional steps: • Never give your MoneyPak number out to strangers. • Never give out receipt information from a previous purchase to another party. • Only use your MoneyPak to reload prepaid cards or other accounts you may control. • Refuse offers to buy a MoneyPak and share the number/receipt information by email or phone. • To use your MoneyPak with other online merchants, transfer the money to a PayPal account before paying the merchant. Do not email your MoneyPak number directly to any merchant. • Do not use the MoneyPak to pay taxes or fees in order to claim “winnings” on foreign lottery or prize promotion. Unless it’s an approved MoneyPak partner, do not use your MoneyPak for any offer requiring you to pay up front. A list of approved MoneyPak partners is available on the Green Dot website.

LET’S TALK CARS

The all-new, fourth-generation Honda CR-V debuted late last year with upscale styling, excellent fuel efficiency, and a host of standard convenience features. College bound seniors have no excuse to help themselves in Sunny Isles Beach

Light Up Your Holiday Season with Winter Fest in Sunny Isles Beach

BY CHIEF FRED MASS AND SUSAN SIMPSON, DIRECTOR OF CCS

In today’s world, getting into certain colleges, even at the state level has become a most difficult challenge. Finding the means to pay for college tuition, room and board, is an even GREATER challenge. Add in a SAGGING ECONOMY, reduced pay and benefits for the parents who are helping to bear the financial burden for their children, and it can be overwhelming to say the least. But in one city, Your City, the City of Sunny Isles Beach, “HELP” is an application away. For the past 2 years and now entering our third year, college scholarship assistance is made available to resident seniors who qualify and want to meet the criteria. How badly you WANT to be a recipient is up to you. But if the desire and effort are there, so will be the $$$. Those requisites are simple and most of our seniors already do them. How does it work? Chanukah, December 8, 2012

BY RICHARD C. SCHULMAN

City Historian

One hundred and sixtyseven years before the birth of Christ, a Syrian King named Antiochus captured the land of Israel. He ordered the Jews to give up their religion and worship his idols. All who refused to obey his command were put to death. What followed was the first fight for religious freedom. The Jews fought back. Even though they were greatly outnumbered by the Syrian forces,

the Jewish Maccabean army defeated the enemy and recaptured Jerusalem. Immediately they marched to the Holy temple, smashed the idols the Syrians had put there. When they cleaned and repaired the temple, everyone gathered to celebrate the rededication. However, only one flask of Holy Oil was found to light the new Menorah. This was just enough oil to burn for one day. But, a great miracle happened; to everyone’s amazement, this little flask of oil burned for eight days and nights. Because of this miracle, we celebrate Chanukah for eight days.

Mount Sinai to host free webinar on preventive treatment for Alzheimer’s disease

The Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders at Mount Sinai Medical Center will host a free, interactive webinar to discuss preventive treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. The online symposium will take place on Friday, November 30th at 1:00PM. The forum should be of special interest to individuals who are at risk of developing Alzheimer’s or who have family members with memory-related concerns. The webinar will feature a panel discussion with three international experts in Alzheimer’s disease: Dr. Jessica Langbaum, research scientist with the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and Associate Director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative; Dr. Andy Saykin, Director of Indiana University’s Center for Neuroimaging; and Dr. Susan Landau, research scientist at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. The experts will discuss symptoms of Alzheimer’s, why effective treatment needs to begin early and clinical trials set to begin in 2013 that will examine prevention of the disease. Participants will also have an opportunity to participate in an ample question and answer session. Dr. Ranjan Duara, Director of The Mount Sinai Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders will host and moderate the event. “Part of our discussions at this symposium will be about how we can determine when the disease in its earliest stages, just like we detect high cholesterol in people’s blood and start treating high cholesterol whether or not patients have any symptoms. The same goes for treating Alzheimer’s early so we can prevent the disease from escalating. “ The webinar is a pre-cursor to the 11th annual Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) Symposium to be held on Miami Beach in January. International experts in the fields of neurology, neuropsychology, psychiatry, geriatrics and neuropathology will gather to explore risk factors, diagnosis and progression of Alzheimer’s, and aims to provide a

forum for new information and in-depth discussions about advances in research related to the clinical diagnosis and progression of the disease. Unless ways are found to prevent Alzheimer’s disease or delay its onset, it is projected that 13 million people in the U.S. will have Alzheimer’s Disease by 2050. Since the development of criteria for the disease twenty-five years ago, major advances in our understanding of the biology and early clinical features of Alzheimer’s have led to improvement in clinical assessments which have enabled clinicians to diagnose an earlier stage of the illness. To register for this free webinar taking place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30th, visit www.mcisymposium.org/webinar. THANKSGIVING, from page 1 be termed out); residential area commissioner - seat 2, central area currently held by Jeanette Gatto; and residential area commissioner - seat 4, currently held by Isaac Aelion. DID YOU KNOW… When students start the 2013/2014 school year, the Norman S. Edelcup/Sunny Isles Beach K-8 School will be taking learning to a higher level – literally. New levels will soon be added to the existing school building to accommodate 12 new classrooms and roof deck. The Sunny Isles Beach City Commission approved the expansion project to alleviate student overcrowding and allow for the reopening of art and music rooms. According to a December 2011 memo from the City Manager to the Commission, the agreement [between the City of Sunny Isles Beach and Miami-Dade School District] contains a cost-sharing arrangement in which the city is committing up to $2 million for this expansion project. If the project cost exceeds $4 million dollars, the school district will absorb the additional costs. DID YOU KNOW… Sunny Isles Boulevard is continuing to undergo a dramatic “revitalization transformation.” Two new developments recently approved by the City Commission include: Two, 20-story residential towers at 400 Sunny Isles Boulevard with 230 condo units and an enclosed commercial marina building; and the Sunny Isles Beach Jewish Community Center at 488 Sunny Isles Boulevard – a five-story, multi-use building including a main worship area, a Montessori pre-school, social hall and private restaurant. DID YOU KNOW… Sunny Isles Beach is also moving forward to complete a comprehensive “green initiative” highlighted by the development of even more parks and green space coming to Sunny Isles Boulevard and the south end of the city.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– DID YOU KNOW… Sunny Isles Beach has one of the lowest property tax rates in Miami-Dade County: 2.8000 mills per $1,000 of assessed value. Bucking economic trends, property values are also on the rise. According to Sunny Isles Beach Assistant City ManagerFinance Minal Shah, “The 2012 taxable values, including new construction, represents an increase of 10.745% over the 2011 Taxable Values after Value Adjustment Board changes. Without new construction, the increase in taxable values is 9.43%.” The 2012 increase in taxable values is the second consecutive year values have been escalating in Sunny Isles Beach – even exceeding last year’s growth rate. In 2011, Sunny Isles Beach was one of only ten Miami-Dade municipalities that had an increase in property values (up 8.3% from 2010). DID YOU KNOW… Adding yet another positive note to the city’s reputation for inviting the community to enjoy great cultural events, the 5th annual Sunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest in October was a great success featuring Grammy nominated David Benoit. In keeping with the city’s commitment to giving back to the community, the event helped raise funds to support Joshua’s Heart Foundation. DID YOU KNOW… Sunny Isles Beach now has a new Sister City. Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Norman Edelcup and Mayor Mauro Passalacqua of Taormina, Sicily in Italy signed agreements bonding the two cities when the Sunny Isles Beach Commission attended the formal signing ceremony in the host city of Taormina. . Susan Simpson, director of the city’s Cultural and Community Services Department, explains, “Sunny Isles Beach is a participating member of Sister Cities International – dedicated to fostering cultural, economic, and educational exchanges with cities around the globe sharing similar attributes with Sunny Isles Beach. Through research and a site visit, Taormina, Italy

was confirmed to be a suitable partner in a Sister City relationship. “Taormina, Italy is a beautiful, luxury, coastal, resort community. There are several opportunities for cultural and educational exchanges with Taormina, Italy as they also share a strong commitment to culturally rich public programming as does the City of Sunny Isles Beach. There is a strong mutual commitment to collaborate on educational exchanges. And the tourism industries have already discussed possible collaborations that will continue with the formalization of this relationship.” Sunny Isles Beach also already has a Sister City relationship with Netanya, Israel; and is currently considering forming another new Sister City alliance with the City of Hengchun/Kenting, Taiwan.

guards and more towers providing extra safety. Police Chief Fred Maas explains, “Currently, nine towers are operational. Several are newly constructed by our talented public works associates. The design of the new towers includes storage areas for emergency rescue equipment and A.D.A. accessible beach wheel chairs. The strategic location of the towers allows for more coverage of the same amount of beach territory and also allows for ocean rescues to take place while not abandoning or compromising coverage of the beach. In essence, more coverage, more manpower, more equipment, more safety and quicker response time for our patrons. This is where your tax dollars are being invested wisely and efficiently in a life saving, life protecting fashion.”

DID YOU KNOW… Almost one million vacationers visit Sunny Isles Beach every year. The city is becoming one of the most desirable travel and leisure destinations thanks in part to promotional campaigns launched by the Sunny Isles Beach Tourism and Marketing Council, working in cooperation with the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB). Right now, special packages are available at the most desirable Sunny Isles Beach destinations including: Acqualina Resort & Spa, Double Tree by Hilton Ocean Point Resort, Marenas Beach Resort & Spa, Solé on the Ocean Resort & Spa, Trump International Beach Resort, Turnberry Isle Miami and the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort. According to Rolando Aedo, GMCVB Sr. Vice President of Marketing and Tourism, “Sunny Isles Beach is part of an amazing destination with its own unique brand recognized globally… Occupancy and revenue per available room has risen dramatically and we’ve continued to see record growth. This is great news for Sunny Isles Beach and speaks to the amazing things that have happened here. Ninety-six percent of visitors expressed their intent to return and this satisfaction reflects the city’s [exceptional] hotels, parks and beautification projects - indicating tourists and residents appreciate [the city’s amenities].”

DID YOU KNOW… As of Oct. 5, the Sunny Isles Beach parking meter system changed from Pay-andDisplay to Pay-by-Space as a convenience feature to patrons of the municipal parking lots. The new system enables patrons to pay the meter for the desired amount of time and then simply walk to their intended destination without the hassle of waiting for a receipt to print or taking a long walk back to their car with a receipt. Fitch Ratings once again upgrades Miami Beach’s Mount Sinai Medical Center

New York-based rating agency Fitch Ratings has upgraded Mount Sinai Medical Center’s bond ratings status from BBB- to BBB. Over the past few years, Mount Sinai has continued to generate increased, positive revenues and effectively manage expenses year after year. The upgrade reflects Mount Sinai’s continued improvement of operating performance and significant expense reduction while expanding into multiple locations, including satellite offices in Hialeah, Coral Gables, Aventura and Key Biscayne. The Mount Sinai Heart Institute has developed into one of the state’s strongest cardiovascular service lines, which has resulted in continued strong performance of the hospital’s cardiac surgical volume. Mount Sinai has the best cardiac surgery survival rate in Florida among institutions that perform the highest volume of complex procedures, captures the largest market share of valve surgeries in Florida, and has the best heart attack survival rate in the state, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Hospital Compare data. In addition, births and emergency department visits have continually increased over the last several years. Additional positive rating factors are Mount Sinai’s solid market position as the only hospital on Miami Beach and one of a select few statutory teaching hospitals in the state of Florida. Mount Sinai’s outstanding

medical staff provides award-winning care in its centers of excellence, including cardiology, cancer and neuroscience. The medical center’s ongoing recruitment of high quality, experienced medical staff and its strong community support from donors also made a positive impact on its rating upgrade. Steven D. Sonenreich, Mount Sinai’s President and CEO, attributes the medical center’s success to the board of trustees, its donors and medical staff who embrace the hospital’s mission. “Mount Sinai was established 60 years ago, with the help of visionary community leaders who responded to the need for a new hospital on Miami Beach,” Sonenreich said. “Philanthropy continues to play a role today as does our focus on delivering results-driven academic care that is both high quality and cost efficient.” According to Fitch Ratings, by June 30, 2012, Mount Sinai held $186.6 million of unrestricted cash and investments, equivalent to about 154 days cash on hand – an increase of 63 days since 2008. The upgrade from Fitch Ratings continues to reflect Mount Sinai’s improved operating performance, as also reported back in March when Moody’s Investors Services upgraded Mount Sinai’s outlook to stable at a higherlevel rating. Additional information about Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach is available at msmc.com.
