6th Annual SIB Jazz Fest hits a high note
The ladies of jazz: Nicole Yarling, Wendy Pedersen, Paulette Dozier and Ashley Moss
n Saturday, Nov. 16 the vocalists presenting a “Tribute to Women in Jazz” were treated to a beautiful evening and a responsive crowd. If the event had been held indoors, the reviewers would have proclaimed that the ladies performed to “a packed house” and the soaring vocals would have “raised the roof”. As it was, all that upward bound joyous musical energy became an added perk to the residents with balconies overlooking the park. The ladies of jazz: Nicole Yarling, Wendy Pedersen, Paulette Dozier and Ashley Moss, all gave individual stellar performances singing familiar favorites. The crowd was obviously into the music and showed their appreciation for the quality of the singing. In the open air venue, jazz aficionados could stand in line to satisfy their taste buds, while continuing to listen to the music. The Melton Mustafa Orchestra hit every note true. Those talented musicians at the top of their game complimented the ladies nicely, pushing every song to the pinnacle of perfection. All of the singers came together on stage at the end of the evening for a giant jam session. It was icing on the cake and left the audience wishing for more. Next year’s Sunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest will be on stage at Heritage Park again before we know it. Be sure to join us next year for another unforgettable evening. (Photos on page 15)

Not everyone can claim winning third place in an international art contest at the young age of eleven years old. However Roberto Garcia Marquez has done just that. Roberto has always had a natural artistic talent and much of his work has been showcased throughout the State of Florida. When Roberto was 21 years of age he, his twin brother and his father escaped communist Cuba in a makeshift boat in search of freedom, opportunity and human rights. They navigated for 16 hours until reaching the shores of Key West. I guess you could say it was destiny for Roberto to be here since his birthday falls on the Fourth of July. Roberto’s paintings are unique in many ways, and easily captivate one’s heart. He attributes his Cuban roots, the love of the ocean and it’s sea life for inspiring his imagination, passion and creativity. Roberto is married to his sweetheart Liz and together, with their two beautiful daughters, own and operate Ocean Outfitters in Sunny Isles Beach. Much of his artwork fills the walls of the store, and his own original art can be found on handpainted shirts. Roberto continues to grow artistically and evolve with each piece he creates. A recent project “Elizabeth The Sea Turtle” is a four-foot sculpture of a sea turtle with a mermaid painting on its back. This sculpture sits in front of the Surfside Community Center inspiring all who walk by her to protect our oceans and sea life. Always generous, Roberto has donated his time and talent to several local community projects to beautify and brighten

neighborhoods. He and his wife are supporters of Camp Boggy Creek located in Eustis, FL. The camp offers seriously ill children the opportunity to experience camp year round in a safe and secure environment. The camp is free of charge and is completely sponsored only by donations. In honor of Art Basel, Roberto and Liz will convert Ocean Outfitters into a mini art gallery featuring “Reflections Of The Soul”. All are welcome to attend and browse the artwork. The dates for the exhibition are December 6th (opening night), 7th, and 8th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served on opening night. We anticipate selling out the South Tower by the end of 2014.” Located at 172nd Street and Biscayne Boulevard, Marina Palms is being developed by affiliates of The Plaza Group and The DevStar Group. Miami-Dade Transit earns awards UM School of Nursing receives for innovations and marketing $500K from anonymous donor BY IRENE D. FERRADAZ
Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) recently received top honors from leading national and state public transportation organizations for its technical innovations and original marketing campaigns. On a yearly basis, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and Florida Public Transportation Association (FPTA) recognize transit agencies for their outstanding and innovative contributions to public transportation. The FPTA recently named MDT its overall state winner for Innovation and Creativity. MDT received the Innovation Award for a series of technologically advanced communication methods the department has rolled out to enhance immediate communication with passengers. Some of the methods include: the Rider Alert system and the Miami-Dade Transit Tracker app, which contain the Train Tracker and Google Map Trip Planner features. MDT also has placed liquid crystal display (LCD) screens at the platform level of all 23 Metrorail stations that show vital transit information to passengers waiting for the next train. In addition, MDT was honored with two first place “Best in Class” market-
ing awards by the FPTA for its Visitor Guide and the Department’s Route 288 Kendall Cruiser print campaign. FPTA also awarded second place to MDT’s shoestring campaign promoting Team TOOT (Totally On Our Tracks), which created public awareness and raised funds for the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk. “Making sure that our residents and visitors remain informed and aware of all their public transit options helps improve their access to the various ways of getting around our community,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “It is an honor to be recognized for our efforts and we look forward to continuing the delivery of exemplary service and information to all our residents and visitors.” APTA recently named MDT among the first-place winners of the AdWheel Awards, which recognize creative excellence in marketing public transportation. MDT’s two winning entries were the Metrorail Service Frequency station platform displays and the “That’s a NoBrainer” digital campaign. Visit Miami-Dade Transit’s home page at <www.miamidade.gov/transit> for more information about how to utilize these services and how using transit can save you money today.

The University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) has announced a $500,000 capital campaign gift from an unnamed benefactor in support of its plans to build one of the nation’s first education-based simulation hospitals. Designed to lead the field of nursing and healthcare education into the 21st Century, the five-story, 39,000-squarefoot facility will replicate the true flow of activity in a clinical practice and hospital and provide an educational setting for the school’s students. The Simulation Hospital will facilitate inter-professional collaborations, whereby nurses, physicians and other healthcare professionals will work in teams to improve patient safety outcomes. It also will be a test site for new healthcare products and patient safety research. The gift supports the naming of the simulation hospital courtyard. “For 65 years, the School of Nursing and Health Studies has been an innovator in healthcare education and research,” said Dean Nilda (Nena) Peragallo Montano. “The Simulation Hospital is the most exciting and forward-thinking initiative in our school’s history. We are exceedingly grateful to
this generous donor, whose commitment will undoubtedly inspire others to join our mission of preparing the next generation of healthcare leaders, while enhancing safe patient care provision in our community and beyond.” The School of Nursing and Health Studies’ Simulation Hospital is a key priority of the school’s Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for the University of Miami, as well as a critical part of the school’s commitment to helping resolve the national healthcare crisis resulting from patient safety breaches as well as a rapidly aging population of both patients and nurses. Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for the University of Miami seeks to advance learning, elevate scholarship, and make bold strides in healthcare in the community, across the country, and around the world. Momentum2 comes on the heels of the institution’s record-breaking Momentum: The Campaign for the University of Miami, which concluded at the end of 2007 and raised more than $1.4 billion for endowed chairs and professorships, scholarships, facilities, academic and medical programs, and other initiatives. For more details visit online at <www.miami.edu/momentum2>.

MSC Divina joins fleet of It’s all about communication, Miami-based cruise ships connecting and community BY GRANT MILLER
With the Miami skyline in the background MSC Divina is pictured berthed at Port Miami where she will be based year-round for cruises to the Caribbean. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY LEE STEPHENS
The dazzling MSC Divina made cruise history on Nov. 19, when she was escorted into PortMiami by a fleet of high-powered FIAT personal watercraft. With her arrival, MSC Divina becomes the first MSC Cruises ship to sail year-round from North America. With her show-stopping entrance, MSC Divina concludes her 18-night Atlantic Ocean crossing to Miami from Venice, Italy. During the voyage, a Rosso Brillante (metallic red) Fiat 500, or Cinquecento as it is known in Italy, was loaded onto the ship to accompany MSC Divina across the Atlantic. “With MSC Divina’s debut, we are thrilled to welcome one of our finest and most innovative vessels to North America,” said Richard Sasso, president and CEO of MSC Cruises USA. “Today marks an important milestone for MSC Cruises as we continue to grow in this region, offering more destinations and appealing to wider audiences. We look forward to offering North American cruisers something new and fresh.” MSC Divina guests will experience several new, exciting features. Two entirely unique dining venues created in partnership with Italian restaurant emporium Eataly in Manhattan, NY, will include the upscale Ristorante Italia and spectacular regional steakhouse, Eataly Steakhouse, fashioned after the famed restaurant in Eataly’s Manhattan location. Eataly was founded by Oscar Farinetti in 2007 and launched in the U.S. in partnership with celebrity chefs Mario Batali and Lidia and Joe Bastianich. MSC Divina will be the first ship to offer Aqua Cycling at sea. Reported as this summer’s latest fitness craze by Extra TV and highlighted on Good Morning America, New York Times and Time magazine, among other media, Aqua Cycling will allow MSC Divina guests to take spinning to new heights while cruising the Caribbean. Unlike any other luxury onboard experi-
ence, MSC Divina will feature the MSC Yacht Club for the first time in North America. The unique “ship-within-a-ship” now will be available in the Caribbean for guests looking for unparalleled indulgence, luxury and comfort. From personal butler, 24-hour concierge service and complimentary select wines and spirits available any time of the day, guests booked in the MSC Yacht Club Suites are pampered throughout the MSC Yacht Club’s exclusive lounges and pool area. This oasis of premium tranquility provides several private venues, including Le Muse panoramic restaurant, Top Sail Lounge, pool and relaxation area as well as private access to the MSC Aurea Spa. For more information about MSC Divina’s first season in the U.S. and its unique new features and special offers, visit online at <www.msccruisesusa.com>. Christened by legendary actress and “diva” Sophia Loren, MSC Divina features 1,751 staterooms, 322,900 square feet of public space, a casino, seven restaurants, 18 bars and lounges, five swimming pools (including an infinity pool), a bowling alley, theater, gym, spa, Internet café, conference center, kids and teen areas, and the lines signature ship within a ship, MSC Yacht Club. For more information, visit <www.msccruisesusa.com> or call 1-877-665-4655. The MSC Divina joins the Disney Magic, which arrived earlier in November, among the PortMiami-based ships featured for the 2013-14 cruise season. Other ships scheduled to arrive this year are the Carnival Conquest and the Costa Luminosa. The Carnival Ecstasy is scheduled to arrive in January 2014 and the Norwegian Getaway is set for February. “The 2013-14 cruise season marks the continuation of our largest expansion ever, bringing more new cruise vessels and cruise passengers in a single cruise season than ever before,” said PortMiami director Bill Johnson.

At Miami’s Community Newspapers we believe that it’s all about the community — connecting with it and communicating information about it to our residents. It’s all about the C’s. Miami’s Community Newspapers has been around over 50 years. We were spawned when the glimmer of incorporation first began to sparkle and we were the communication voice that carried that message to the people. We worked hard to become The Voice of Miami-Dade and we continue to work hard to remain as that voice. We connect our local entrepreneurs to our residents, directing them to our shops, restaurants and local businesses. We help businesses communicate by using the newspapers’ pages to profile our business partners and tell you where to find a new restaurant or store. We encourage business owners to connect and communicate with the community by allowing them to write a column or feature
story about their business or expertise. We also regularly cover the activities and accomplishments of our young people at the schools located in and around our communities. In particular, we relish communicating the sports successes of our youth, either as members of their school teams or in the various youth leagues that have programs in our community. We like to feature the activities of our houses of worship, too, as they represent the very fiber of our connections with each other inour community We love that so many of you have connected with the community by participating in our popular “Read in …” feature and that you take a copy of this newspaper on your vacations, trips and holidays and remember to snap a picture with the paper and send it back to us. It is a small world after all. So, thank you to all of you for allowing us to be a part of your lives. Thank you for reading the stories and columns that appear in this newspaper. Thank you for patronizing our advertisers. And thank you for connecting with your community and allowing us to communicate some of that in Miami’s Community Newspapers.

Mercedes-Benz extensively updates 2014 E-Class Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Mercedes-Benz continues to improve and elevate the E-Class. Both the Sedan and Wagon have been extensively updated for 2014 with highly efficient engines, an array of new driver assistance systems and more refined styling. Eleven new or optimized assistance systems from the future S-Class have been added to E-Class vehicles, combining a host of comfort and safety features Mercedes calls “intelligent drive.” These advanced systems include technologies that can help prevent accidents with pedestrians or vehicles crossing ahead, Active Lane Keeping Assist for avoiding collisions with oncoming traffic and anti-glare continuous high-beam headlights. The E-Class sedan and wagon have a wide range of powerful and efficient gasoline and diesel engine options. All come with the ECO start/stop system as standard equipment. Both V-6 and V-8 are offered in the E350 and E550. New is the efficient 190 hp four-cylinder diesel engine powering the
E250 BlueTEC with 4Matic all-wheel drive. Another option is the E400 Hybrid powered by a 302hp 3.5- liter V-6 paired with a 27 hp electric motor that delivers gas mileage of 24/30 mpg. The new E-Class also comes with distinctive updates in its styling for an elegant and sporty look, as well as significantly enhanced comfort features and upscale equipment. Numerous modifications give the E-Class a new front-end design and revised proportions for an elegant and sporty look. New headlights incorporate all light functions within a single lens, while flowing light elements within the headlights help to retain the “four-eyed” E-Class signature. And two different front-end designs are available — the Luxury version comes with the classic sedan grille with three-louvers and star on the hood, while the Sport version has the sports grille with integrated star, linking it to the high-performance Mercedes sports car models. The hood and front bumper also have been redesigned. With its flowing lines, the hood delivers a smooth, sleek look, while the bumper has new contemporary styling with an aerofoil shape along its lower edge. Sport models get the AMG styling package with larger air intakes and a distinct aluminum trim line along the entire lower rim of the front bumper. The rear end features modifi-

cations to the lights and the bumper, with the new LED taillights getting a horizontal design. Sport models have exposed dual exhaust pipes. On the inside, the interior of the E-Class has been revised subtly with a two-part trim extending across the soft-touch dashboard, available in two wood finishes — burl walnut or black ash. Also new are the three-tube instrument cluster, trapezoidal head-unit dis-
play, air vent design and analogue clock. The suggested MSRP on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class ranges from $51,400 to $102,370. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers.
