Dancing Through the Decades at Holiday Ball 2012 NSE/SIB K-8 does Student Government with City Officials BY DR. ANNETTE WEISSMAN
Principal
Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8 emphasizes a rigorous academic program that fosters student achievement. But we also believe that students must be well rounded and have opportunities to grow in every arena. Many of our extra - curricular activities enable students to explore new avenues and develop new skills. One of these options is to participate in our Student Government Association and develop leadership skills. Each year the middle school students have an opportunity to campaign for offices in our Student Government Association.

Scholarship Opportunities for College-bound Seniors from Sunny Isles Beach BY CHIEF FRED MAAS, CHIEF OF POLICE AND SUSAN SIMPSON, DIRECTOR OF CCS
In today’s world, getting into certain colleges, even at the state level has become a most difficult challenge. Finding the means to pay for college tuition, room and board, is an even GREATER challenge. Add in a SAGGING ECONOMY, reduced pay and benefits for the parents who are helping to bear the financial burden for their children and it can be overwhelming to say the least. But in one city, Your City, the City of Sunny Isles Beach, “HELP” is an application away. For the past 2 years and now entering our third year, college scholarship assistance is made available to resident seniors who qualify and want to meet the crite-
ria. Surely some will think right away there is a CATCH. But there is NOT, you simply have to meet the criteria required of ALL applicants and you are on your way. How badly you WANT to be a recipient is up to you. But if the desire and effort are there, so will be the $$$. Those requisites are simple and most of our seniors already do them. How does it work? Well here it is: Q: WHEN ARE APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR PICK UP OR ON LINE? WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2, 2013 Q: WHERE CAN I OBTAIN AN APPLICATION? CITY GOVERNMENT CENTER 1ST FLOOR LOBBY DESK. PELICAN COMMUNITY CENTER, LOBBY DESK, 1ST FLOOR ON LINE AT CITY WEB SITE AT WWW.SIBFL.NET Q: WHEN DO APPLICATIONS CLOSE?
ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE RETURNED BY FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 2013, BY 5:00PM. APPLICATIONS ARE TO BE RETURNED TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, 2ND FLOOR GOVERNMENT CENTER, WHICH IS OPEN 24/7. Q: WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA? YOU MUST BE A RESIDENT OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR PRIOR TO JANUARY 1, 2013. YOU MUST BE ACCEPTED INTO AN ACCREDITED COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY. This year’s Holiday Ball featured a fine art presentation of a local artist, a Sunny Isles Beach resident, Beatriz Alcantara, who presented her art work at the pre-dinner lounge. All the guests were pleasantly surprised when upon their arrival they were greeted by an artist with the exhibition of her paintings. Done in a unique technique of fine-pointed brush using acrylics, all the paintings were so captivating and vibrant. The guests had a chance to get acquainted with their neighbor and artist and learned that she had a Peruvian background and therefore in her artwork she portrayed the culture and history of Peruvian people. As always, the Community Center was converted into a cozy banquet hall for the local community. People got together with their friends and neighbors for a pleasant evening of eating a delicious dinner, dancing to their favorite tunes, winning raffled prizes, meeting new people, enjoying an easy chat and laughing. The famous Italian restaurant ‘Mario-TheBaker’ provided delicious food: meatballs and chicken parmesan, pasta with veggetables and salad, meat lasagna and garlic rolls, topped with sangria, and followed by vanilla and lemon cake and coffee for the dessert. Everything was fresh and plentiful! The musical theme selected for this year’s Holiday Ball, ‘Dancing through the Decades’, was performed by everybody’s favorite, David Morin. His style manages to please every taste. Favorite dancing hits of past decades got the audience up and dancing. The guests sang along and danced all evening. All the hard work of putting together this holiday event was rewarded by great compliments received from the guests. Holiday Ball 2012 became another fabulous and successful cultural event.
It is a great pleasure to share all the credit and gratitude that we received from the residents with our dedicated CCS team who worked hard to make this event yet another success: Marie Napolitano for great promotion of the event, Fernanda Gonzalez, Pharin Walker, Norelli Ligouri and Marco Rey for decorations and outstanding service, Darya Yeroshova for taking care of every detail before, during and after the event. Special Thanks go to Darrin Graumann, our department’s new asset as events coordinator, for his fresh ideas as well as the technical and moral support. Thank you all very much. On behalf of Cultural & Community Services Department we invite everybody to our next exciting evening of dinner and dancing, that we are already planning for the community, Spring Fling, scheduled for March 9, 2013. The Sunny Isles Beach Community School Fund raises money to supplement and complement the funds available to the Norman S. Edelcup K-8 Community School and the Alonzo and Tracey Mourning High School. We supply the funds that are required to keep the schools that our residents attend functioning at the very highest level. Luckily, we have many wonderful community assets that are willing to assist. Golden Beach residents Jacqueline and Fred Chouinard have stepped forward with a $25,000 donation that will purchase equipment and supplies that are state of the art technology for enhancing our schools’ educational offerings. Jacqueline and Fred have shown that the words “Community Participation” have real meaning. Both Golden Beach and Sunny Isles Beach are the attendance/resi-
dential zones for our schools. This spirit of giving and participation of residents and businesses in our fund raising efforts has been very fruitful. Contributions and pledges are getting close to half a million dollars. Our students are being exposed to an educational program that is preparing them for the 21st Century world of University and Work. The Sunny Isles Beach K-8 Community School Fund thanks Jacqueline and Fred for their very wonderful and generous contribution. A Recognition Plaque has been installed at the entrance to the Music Suite to show our appreciation and gratitude. The Trust Fund will be reaching out in the near future to businesses, parents, and other local citizens for their support. For further information: Bob Welsh, President 305-607-5706

The Gift of Giving
Patricia C. Frank
FRANKLY SPEAKING A rather simplistic view of the world is that the world is divided into Givers and Takers. Which one are you? If you are a taker you are on the wrong side in life. Do everything you can to get on the other side of this great divide and be a giver. The secret of giving is to give with a pure and generous heart. Give without any thought or desire for reward. The spirit in which you give is as important as what you give. Through pure giving you express your higher self and your love and respect for others. The art of giving should be cultivated. Be an artist and create ways to give. Be inventive. Be resourceful. Be generous. Buy something that captures the other person’s personality or essence. Or, give of yourself, your talents, your expertise and your skills. Give what you can. Give as
often as you can. If you are empty spiritually, mentally, emotionally and psychologically you will have nothing to give. Enrich yourself so that you will have something unique and exceptional to give to others. The gift of giving is the way it makes you feel and how it opens your heart and enhances your life. A gift is a wonderful thing. It can bring immense pleasure and joy to both the giver and the receiver. The very act of giving becomes a benediction in itself. It blesses you and it blesses the recipient. When you give you experience how rich you truly are. The more you give the richer you will be and the more you will have to give. Give without reason. Give whether the person deserves it or not. Give something to someone every day even if it is only a compliment or a kind word of encouragement and support. Notice others, talk to them and listen to them. Remember, you have the power to light up their world and your world with the gift of something as simple as your smile.

Pelican Community Park shows Beauty and the Beast Community Center Coordinator, City of SIB
BY INNA KARTUNOVA
On Wednesday, November 28, students of Pelican Community Park’s Musical Theater program performed Beauty and the Beast, a children’s play based on the famous Walt Disney musical. As the PCP tradition goes, these end-of-the-session showcases are free of charge and open to students of afterschool
program, families and friends of the performing students, City employees, city residents and guests. This wonderful musical was warmly received by the audience; a touching story of Belle, a young girl from a small town, and the Beast, who is an enchanted prince, whose curse was lifted and who was transformed to his former self once he learned to love and be loved in return. Colorful costumes and decorations created by the Musical Theater teachers, singing and dancing to the enchanting music – all created an unforgettable and charming ambiance of the favorite fairytale. Anita Capone as
Belle, Olivia Feldman as the Beast, the rest of the cast, such as Alexis Khodos, Belen Henao-Brown, Gabrielle Hug, Savannah Riley, Catherine Solovey and Emma Mellgren as a narrator – all performed very well and enjoyed the event as much as the spectators did. The show was a huge success. At the end of the event, grateful parents presented flowers to the teachers, Stephanie Riboul and Norelli Liguori, who did an outstanding job putting the play together. Students, both excited and relieved because the performance went very well, were treated to little cupcakes, fruits and lemonade.

City of North Miami Beach presents the Key to the City to Valente Brothers Jiu-Jit-Su Group Recognized for its Public Service in Training Self-Defense and Hand-to-Hand Combat to U.S. Military and Law Enforcement Agencies Locally and throughout the World
Valente Brothers Jiu-Jitsu received the prestigious Key to the City of North Miami Beach from Mayor George Vallejo (second from right) ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Valente Brothers Jiu-Jitsu received the prestigious Key to the City of North Miami Beach from Mayor George Vallejo on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 during a City Council Meeting at City Hall. The style of martial arts taught by the Valente Brothers is the official hand-to-hand combat system of the United States Military and law enforcement agencies around the country. Mayor Vallejo, who is also a purple belt at the Valente Brothers School, recognized Professors and Owners Pedro, Gui and Joaquim Valente, for their outstanding work with the Miami-Dade Police Department, the Florida National Guard, several local departments and military and law enforcement organizations around the world. Prior to the formal presentation at City Hall, Mayor Vallejo also commended Valente Brothers during the School’s coveted belt ceremony on December 10th, where over 400 attendees gathered at the flagship school in North Miami Beach to support their peers as select students were promoted to receive new belts. The School also had the honorable presence of Royce Gracie, UFC’s first champion, who flew his students in from Brazil to officially be pro-
moted by the Valente Brothers. Gracie JiuJitsu students from all over the world including Mexico, Israel, England, Canada, and Kuwait, attended the belt ceremony, further conveying the notoriety and respect Valente Brothers have earned in the martial arts community. Valente Brothers is the official representation of Grandmaster Hélio Gracie in Florida. Professors Pedro, Gui and Joaquim Valente started training under the Grandmaster at the age of two, and were his loyal disciples and protégés until he passed away in January 2009. Valente Brothers Jiu-Jitsu is fully committed to preserving Hélio Gracie’s vision, teaching method, and ideals. The School provides the most effective self-defense instruction in the world by giving students the elements to defend themselves in real life, with no rules, no points, and no time limits. Valente Brothers Jiu-Jitsu has schools in North Miami Beach, Pembroke Pines, Fort Lauderdale and Coral Gables, and offers group classes for adults, youth, women, military and law enforcement. Private classes are also available. For more information, call 305-3542060 or visit www.valentebrothers.com.

2013 Subaru Outback has new engine, revised styling
Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Subaru Outback has been a company mainstay since it was introduced in Japan in 1994. For 2013, it gets revised styling, a new and more efficient powertrain, and it debuts the new EyeSight driver-assist system. Additionally, chassis enhancements improve both ride quality and agility, and there are new amenities and audio/infotainment capabilities. Outback has a restyled front end, with new headlights, grille, front bumper and fog lights, giving it a more powerful appearance. Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive distinguishes the Outback and it continues with 8.7 inches of ground clearance, higher than many crossovers and some dedicated SUVs. The 2013 Outback 2.5i models debut a new double-overhead-cam (DOHC) 2.5-liter FB series Boxer engine for increased performance and fuel efficiency. The new engine produces 173 hp and 174 pounds-feet
of torque. The new engine produces greater low-end torque across a broad speed range, making the 2013 Outback 2.5i models feel more responsive in everyday driving. Outback 2.5i and 2.5i Premium models offer a choice between a standard six-speed manual transmission and the second-generation Lineartronic CVT, which is standard on 2.5i Limited models. Outback 3.6R models continue with a 256-hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder Boxer engine and five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. Subaru says the 2013 Outback 2.5i with the Lineartronic CVT gets 24/30 mpg. The 2013 Outback models debut Subaru’s new EyeSight driver-assist system, which integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, PreCollision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. EyeSight uses a stereo camera design developed by Subaru to provide a detection angle wider than that of radar-based systems. The EyeSight system processes stereo images to identify the vehicles traveling in front, as well as obstacles, traffic lanes and other items. Below speeds of 19 mph, EyeSight is capable of detecting pedestrians or objects in the vehicle’s path and can activate in order to mitigate or even avoid the collision.

Outback has a restyled front end, with new headlights, grille, front bumper and fog lights.
Under certain circumstances, EyeSight is able to bring the car to a complete stop. At speeds above approximately 19 mph, EyeSight can apply the brakes when an object is detected, and will attempt to brake if the driver takes no evasive action, or does not brake appropriately, to help mitigate collision damage. The Lane Departure and Sway Warning feature can detect if the car begins to wander outside the intended lane without a turn signal being used, or if the car begins to sway within the travel lane. Intended for freeway use, EyeSight’s
Adaptive Cruise Control system can maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, braking and/or accelerating the car as needed to maintain the driver-selected target speed and traveling distance. Pricing on the 2013 Subaru Outback starts at $23,495. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. In the aftermath of a tropical storm or hurricane Returning from an evacuation Your safety should always be the number one priority. Before you return to your home to check on your belongings and pets, you should wait until emergency management gives you permission to do so. • To re-enter the city you may be required to show your RESIDENT ID card, driver’s license, other photo ID or a utility bill that has your name and address. • If your home has structural damage, don’t enter until it has been checked by officials. • Open windows and doors to ventilate and dry your home. • Beware of snakes, insects and animals driven to higher ground by flood water. • Before drinking water, check to
make sure it is safe for you and your family. • Power outages can endanger your food supply. Dispose of any food that has been at room temperature for two hours or more, and any food that has an unusual odor, color or texture. • Danger from power lines: Do not touch fallen or low-hanging wires. A wire that seems harmless may be crossed with a live wire. Stay away from wires in contact with puddles. Do not pile debris on or near power line equipment, poles, transformers, or down wire.

How you can generously spread Christmas cheer on a budget next year
Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH Although spending during the holiday season is expected to increase, your debt doesn’t have to. Even if you took advantage of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, I have some helpful tips to help you get the most bang for your buck next Christmas season: • Shop after 6 p.m. the evening before a sale is advertised to begin. Many retailers program the registers the night before the sale. Ask the associate in advance for any possible upcoming sales, especially on big ticket items. • Leave the plastic at home. Set a specific amount of money for each gift, and put that money in separate envelopes marked with the recipients’ names. • Make a list of everyone you need to buy for and how much you plan to spend on them before visiting any store or website and stick to it. • Save yourself the guesswork and stay on budget by buying gift cards, especially for non-family members and acquaintances such as teachers, babysitters and bosses. • Use the Web to compare prices and products before storming the stores. Not only will you save time, you also will save money on gas by not driving all over town. • Sign up to receive emails from your favorite retailers. The NRF anticipates an extreme promotional holiday season with the brunt of sales offered to a retailer’s most loyal customers only.
• Find discount codes to save hundreds while online shopping. Simply go to RetailMeNot.com, SecretPrices.com, and FreeShipping.org to pull up all of the available discounts for your store. These discount codes usually offer free shipping or 20 percent off or more. • Avoid the “10 percent off, buy more” trend. Stores often offer great deals when you sign up for their credit cards, but beware of the high interest rates. In the long run, you’ll be spending more than you saved. • Get some money back by shopping on Ebates.com. Shop hundreds of retailers through the site and set a percentage of money back from every item bought. • Before you start shopping, follow your favorite retailers on Twitter and Facebook. Many companies offer discounts exclusively to their Twitter followers and Facebook friends. • Give Alternative gifts. Instead of giving tangible gifts such as clothes and jewelry, try gifting discounted outings and services. Use Groupon.com or Livingsocial.com to give your friends and family goodies such as spa packages and their favorite pastime activities. Following these money saving tips will ensure thank you will be Jolly Old Saint Nick instead of the mean Mr.(or Ms.) Grinch.
